Abstract

In this review I discuss the characteristics and the formation of all classes of millisecond pulsars (MSPs). The main focus is on the stellar astrophysics of X-ray binaries leading to the production of fully recycled MSPs with white dwarf (WD) or substellar semi-degenerate companions. Depending on the nature of the companion star MSPs are believed to form from either low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) or intermediate-mass X-ray binaries (IMXBs). For each of these two classes of X-ray binaries the evolutionary status of the donor star -- or equivalently, the orbital period -- at the onset of the Roche-lobe overflow (RLO) is the determining factor for the outcome of the mass-transfer phase and thus the nature of the MSP formed. Furthermore, the formation of binary MSPs is discussed in context of the (P,P_dot)-diagram, as well as new interpretations of the Corbet diagram. Finally, I present new models of Case A RLO of IMXBs in order to reproduce the two solar mass pulsar PSR J1614-2230., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures (color). Abstract

The recent discovery of a 2 M_sun binary millisecond pulsar (Demorest et al. 2010) has not only important consequences for the equation-of-state of nuclear matter at high densities but also raises the interesting question if the neutron star PSR J1614-2230 was born massive. The answer is vital for understanding neutron star formation in core collapse supernovae. Furthermore, this system raises interesting issues about the nature of the progenitor binary and how it evolved during its mass exchanging X-ray phase. In this paper we discuss the progenitor evolution of PSR J1614-2230. We have performed detailed stellar evolution modelling of intermediate-mass X-ray binaries undergoing Case A Roche-lobe overflow (RLO) and applied an analytic parameterization for calculating the outcome of either a common envelope evolution or the highly super-Eddington isotropic re-emission mode. We find two viable possibilities for the formation of the PSR J1614-2230 system: either it contained a 2.2-2.6 M_sun giant donor star and evolved through a common envelope and spiral-in phase or, more likely, it descended from a close binary system with a 4.0-5.0 M_sun main sequence donor star via Case A RLO. We conclude that the neutron star must have been born with a mass of ~1.95 M_sun or 1.7+-0.15 M_sun, respectively - which significantly exceeds neutron star birth masses in previously discovered radio pulsar systems. Based on the expected neutron star birth masses from considerations of stellar evolution and explosion models, we find that the progenitor star of PSR J1614-2230 is likely to have been more massive than 20 M_sun., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, MNRAS in press. 3 pages added (mainly extended discussion on neutron star birth masses)

55. Galactic distribution of merging neutron stars and black holes - prospects for short GRB progenitors and LIGO/VIRGO

We have performed detailed population synthesis on a large number (20 million) of binary systems in order to investigate the properties of massive double degenerate binaries. We have included new important results in our input physics in order to obtain more reliable estimates of the merging timescales and relative formation rates. These improvements include refined treatment of the binding energy in a common envelope, helium star evolution and reduced kicks imparted to newborn black holes. The discovery and observations of GRB afterglows and the identification of host galaxies have allowed comparisons of theoretical distributions of merger sites with the observed distribution of afterglow positions relative to host galaxies. To help investigate the physical nature of short- and long-duration GRBs, we compute the distances of merging neutron stars (NS) and/or black holes (BH) from the centers of their host galaxies, as predicted by their formation scenario combined with motion in galactic potentials. Furthermore, we estimate the formation rate and merging rate of these massive double degenerate binaries. The latter is very important for the prospects of detecting gravitational waves with LIGO/VIRGO. We find that the expected detection rate for LIGO II is ~850 per year for galactic field sources and that this rate is completely dominated by merging BHBH binaries. Even LIGO I may detect such an event (~0.25 per year). Our preferred model estimate the Galactic field NSNS merger rate to be ~1.5*10^(-6) per year. For BHBH systems this model predicts a merger rate of ~9.7*10^{-6} per year. 56. On the Binding Energy Parameter of Common Envelope Evolution. Dependency on the Definition of the Stellar Core Boundary during Spiral-in

Abstract

According to the standard picture for binary interactions, the outcome of binaries surviving the evolution through a common envelope (CE) and spiral-in phase is determined by the internal structure of the donor star at the onset of the mass transfer, as well as the poorly-known efficiency parameter, eta_CE}, for the ejection of the H-envelope of the donor. In this Research Note we discuss the bifurcation point which separates the ejected, unprocessed H-rich material from the inner core region of the donor (the central part of the star which will later contract to form a compact object). We demonstrate that the exact location of this point is very important for evaluating the binding energy parameter, lambda, which is used to determine the post-CE orbital separation. Here we compare various methods to define the bifurcation point (core/envelope boundary) of evolved stars with masses 4, 7, 10 and 20 M_sun. We consider the specific nuclear energy production rate profile, the change in the mass-density gradient (Bisscheroux 1998), the inner region containing less than 10% hydrogen, the method suggested by Han et al. (1994) and the entropy profile. We also calculated effective polytropic index profiles. The entropy profile method measures the convective boundary (at the onset of flatness in the specific entropy) which is not equivalent to the core boundary for RGB stars. Hence, this method is not applicable for RGB stars, unless the actual bifurcation point of a CE is located at the bottom of the outer convection zone (resulting in larger values of lambda and larger post-CE orbital separations). On the AGB, where highly degenerate and condensed cores are formed, we find good agreement between the various methods, except for massive (20 M_sun) stars., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, A&A in press

57. Torque Decay in the Pulsar (P,P_dot) Diagram. Effects of Crustal Ohmic Dissipation and Alignment

Abstract

We investigate the evolution of pulsars in the (P,P-dot) diagram. We first present analytical formulae to follow the evolution of a pulsar using simple exponential models for magnetic field decay and alignment. We then compare these evolutionary tracks with detailed model calculations using ohmic decay of crustal neutron star magnetic fields. We find that, after an initial phase with a small braking index, n, pulsars evolve with enhanced torque decay (n >> 3) for about 1 Myr. The long term evolution depends on the impurity parameter of the crust. If impurities are negligible in older isolated pulsars we expect their true age to be approximately equal to their observed characteristic age, tau = P/(2*P-dot). 58. On the Energy Equation and Efficiency Parameter of the Common Envelope Evolution

Abstract

We have investigated the structure of evolved giant stars with masses 3-10 M_sun in order to evaluate the binding energy of the envelope to the core prior to mass transfer in close binary systems. This binding energy is expressed by a parameter lambda which is crucial for determining the outcome of binaries evolving through a common envelope (CE) and spiral-in phase. We discuss the lambda-parameter and the efficiency of envelope ejection in the CE-phase, and show that lambda depends strongly on the evolutionary stage (i.e. stellar radius) of the donor star at the onset of the mass transfer. The existence of this relation enables us to introduce a new approach for solving the energy equation. For a given observed binary system we can derive a unique solution for the original mass and age of the donor star, as well as the pre-CE orbital period. We find that the value of lambda is typically between 0.2 and 0.8. But in some cases, particularly on the asymptotic giant branch of lower-mass stars, it is possible that lambda > 5. A high value of lambda (rather than assuming a high efficiency parameter, eta_CE >1) is sufficient to explain the long final orbital periods observed among those binary millisecond pulsars which are believed to have evolved through a CE-phase. We also present a tabulation of lambda as a function of stellar radius and mass, which is useful for a quick estimation of the orbital decay during a common envelope and spiral-in phase., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A (9 pages, 6 figures)

Abstract

The first three observing runs with Advanced LIGO and Virgo have resulted in the detection of binary black hole (BBH) mergers with highly unequal mass components, which are difficult to reconcile with standard formation paradigms. The most representative of these is GW190814, a highly asymmetric merger between a 23 M⊙ black hole (BH) and a 2.6 M⊙ compact object. Here, we explore recent results, suggesting that a sizable fraction of stars with pre-collapse carbon-oxygen core masses above 10 M⊙, and extending up to at least 30 M⊙, may produce objects inside the so-called lower mass gap that bridges the division between massive pulsars and BHs in Galactic X-ray binaries. We demonstrate that such an explosion landscape would naturally cause a fraction of massive binaries to produce GW190814-like systems instead of symmetric-mass BBHs. We present examples of specific evolutionary channels leading to the formation of GW190814 and GW200210, a 24+ 2.8 M⊙ merger discovered during the O3b observing run. We estimate the merger-rate density of these events in our scenario to be O(5%) of the total BBH merger rate. Finally, we discuss the broader implications of this formation channel for compact object populations, and its possible relevance to less asymmetric merger events such as GW200105 and GW200115.

Abstract

The next generation of ground-based gravitational-wave detectors will observe coalescences of black holes and neutron stars throughout the cosmos, thousands of them with exceptional fidelity. The Science Book is the result of a 3-year effort to study the science capabilities of networks of next generation detectors. Such networks would make it possible to address unsolved problems in numerous areas of physics and astronomy, from Cosmology to Beyond the Standard Model of particle physics, and how they could provide insights into workings of strongly gravitating systems, astrophysics of compact objects and the nature of dense matter. It is inevitable that observatories of such depth and finesse will make new discoveries inaccessible to other windows of observation. In addition to laying out the rich science potential of the next generation of detectors, this report provides specific science targets in five different areas in physics and astronomy and the sensitivity requirements to accomplish those science goals. Abstract

In this paper we describe the potential of the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for studies related to accretion flows in the strong field gravity regime around both stellar-mass and supermassive black-holes. eXTP has the unique capability of using advanced 'spectral-timing-polarimetry' techniques to analyze the rapid variations with three orthogonal diagnostics of the flow and its geometry, yielding unprecedented insight into the inner accreting regions, the effects of strong field gravity on the material within them and the powerful outflows which are driven by the accretion process., Accepted for publication on Sci. These include flaring stars, supernova remnants, accreting white dwarfs, low and high mass X-ray binaries, radio quiet and radio loud active galactic nuclei, tidal disruption events, and gamma-ray bursts. eXTP will be excellently suited to study one common aspect of these objects: their often transient nature. 79. Modelling spin evolution of magnetars.

Abstract

The origin and fate of magnetars [young, extremely magnetized neutron stars (NSs)] remains unsolved. Probing their evolution is therefore crucial for investigating possible links to other species of isolated NSs, such as the X-ray dim NSs (XDINSs) and rotating radio transients (RRATs). Here, we investigate the spin evolution of magnetars. Two avenues of evolution are considered: one with exponentially decaying B-fields, the other with sub- and superexponential decay. Using Monte Carlo methods, we synthesize magnetar populations using different input distributions and physical parameters, such as for the initial spin period, its time derivative, and the B-field decay time-scale. Additionally, we introduce a fade-away procedure that can account for the fading of old magnetars, and we briefly discuss the effect of alignment of the B-field and spin axes. Imposing the Galactic core-collapse supernova rate of ∼20 kyr−1 as a strict upper limit on the magnetar birthrate and comparing the synthetic populations to the observed one using both manual and automatic optimization algorithms for our input parameter study, we find that the B-field must decay exponentially or superexponentially with a characteristic decay time-scale of 0.5−10 kyr (with a best value of ∼4 kyr). In addition, the initial spin period must be less than 2 s. If these constraints are kept, we conclude that there are multiple choices of input physics that can reproduce the observed magnetar population reasonably well. We also conclude that magnetars may well be evolutionary linked to the population of XDINSs, whereas they are in general unlikely to evolve into RRATs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The grand challenges of contemporary fundamental physics-dark matter, dark energy, vacuum energy, inflation and early universe cosmology, singularities and the hierarchy problem-all involve gravity as a key component. And of all gravitational phenomena, black holes stand out in their elegant simplicity, while harbouring some of the most remarkable predictions of General Relativity: event horizons, singularities and ergoregions. The hitherto invisible landscape of the gravitational Universe is being unveiled before our eyes: the historical direct detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration marks the dawn of a new era of scientific exploration. Gravitational-wave astronomy will allow us to test models of black hole formation, growth and evolution, as well as models of gravitational-wave generation and propagation. It will provide evidence for event horizons and ergoregions, test the theory of General Relativity itself, and may reveal the existence of new fundamental fields. The synthesis of these results has the potential to radically reshape our understanding of the cosmos and of the laws of Nature. The purpose of this work is to present a concise, yet comprehensive overview of the state of the art in the relevant fields of research, summarize important open problems, and lay out a roadmap for future progress. This write-up is an initiative taken within the framework of the European Action on 'Black holes, Gravitational waves and Fundamental Physics'.

Abstract

In this White Paper we present the potential of the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for studies related to Observatory Science targets. These include flaring stars, supernova remnants, accreting white dwarfs, low and high mass X-ray binaries, radio quiet and radio loud active galactic nuclei, tidal disruption events, and gamma-ray bursts. eXTP will be excellently suited to study one common aspect of these objects: their often transient nature. Developed by an international Consortium led by the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Science, the eXTP mission is expected to be launched in the mid 2020s.

Abstract

The grand challenges of contemporary fundamental physics-dark matter, dark energy, vacuum energy, inflation and early universe cosmology, singularities and the hierarchy problem-all involve gravity as a key component. And of all gravitational phenomena, black holes stand out in their elegant simplicity, while harbouring some of the most remarkable predictions of General Relativity: event horizons, singularities and ergoregions. The hitherto invisible landscape of the gravitational Universe is being unveiled before our eyes: the historical direct detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration marks the dawn of a new era of scientific exploration. Gravitational-wave astronomy will allow us to test models of black hole formation, growth and evolution, as well as models of gravitational-wave generation and propagation. It will provide evidence for event horizons and ergoregions, test the theory of General Relativity itself, and may reveal the existence of new fundamental fields. The synthesis of these results has the potential to radically reshape our understanding of the cosmos and of the laws of Nature. The purpose of this work is to present a concise, yet comprehensive overview of the state of the art in the relevant fields of research, summarize important open problems, and lay out a roadmap for future progress. This write-up is an initiative taken within the framework of the European Action on 'Black holes, Gravitational waves and Fundamental Physics'.

Abstract

We report near-infrared radial velocity (RV) measurements of the recently identified donor star in the high mass X-ray binary (HMXB) system OAO 1657−415 obtained in the H band using ISAAC on the Very Large Telescope. Cross-correlation methods were employed to construct a RV curve with a semi-amplitude of 22.1 ± 3.5 km s−1. Combined with other measured parameters of this system it provides a dynamically determined neutron star (NS) mass of 1.42 ± 0.26 M⊙ and a mass of 14.3 ± 0.8 M⊙ for the Ofpe/WN9 highly evolved donor star. OAO 1657−415 is an eclipsing HMXB pulsar with the largest eccentricity and orbital period of any within its class. Of the 10 known eclipsing X-ray binary pulsars OAO 1657−415 becomes the ninth with a dynamically determined NS mass solution and only the second in an eccentric system. Furthermore, the donor star in OAO 1657−415 is much more highly evolved than the majority of the supergiant donors in other HMXBs, joining a small but growing list of HMXBs donors with extensive hydrogen depleted atmospheres. Considering the evolutionary development of OAO 1657−415, we have estimated the binding energy of the envelope of the mass donor and find that there is insufficient energy for the removal of the donor’s envelope via spiral-in, ruling out a common envelope evolutionary scenario. With its non-zero eccentricity and relatively large orbital period the identification of a definitive evolutionary pathway for OAO 1657−415 remains problematic, we conclude by proposing two scenarios which may account for OAO 1657−415 current orbital configuration.
