Undocu/DACAmented youth continue to face exclusionary policies and educational environments that deter their postsecondary education trajectories. This research draws from 32 interviews with parents and undocu/DACAmented youth in Michigan. Of particular interest were participants' experiences with postsecondary education access since this is one of the first blocked normative rites undocu/DACAmented youth confront. The theory of liminal legality is used to frame how DACA has created a liminal status for undocu/DACAmented youth that largely results in illusory postsecondary education aspirations and continues to restrict their postsecondary access. The findings reveal undocu/DACAmented youth encounter some possibilities coupled with numerous impossibilities that shape their higher education trajectories. These challenges were more pronounced since President Trump ordered an end to the DACA program. Implications of this investigation are significant given the current sociopolitical landscape and threatened well-being of over 700,000 DACA recipients.

This Aotearoa New Zealand–based study addresses a gap in literature focusing on individual experiences of racism among adolescents and young adults and its links to health. This cross-sectional study uses data from multiple instances of the New Zealand Health Survey (2002/03, 2006/07, 2011/12, 2016/17) and General Social Survey (2008–2016) restricted to participants aged 15–24 years. Prevalence of reported experiences of racism are estimated. Meta-analytic techniques to pool data and multiple regression analyses are used to examine associations between experiences of racism and outcomes measures (mental and physical health, general health and well-being, life satisfaction, inability to access health care, and identity). The study used an ethical co-design process between university researchers and a rangatahi Māori (Māori young people) partnership group. Racism was higher among Māori, Pacific, and Asian young people compared to European young people. Racism was associated with all negative health and well-being measures examined for young people, including negative mental and physical health measures (12-Item Short Form Survey, Kessler Psychological Distress Scale), lower self-rated health, negative life satisfaction, higher unmet need for primary care, and identity measures (feelings of not belonging in New Zealand, less able to express their identity). The results of this study are concerning. Non-European young people disproportionately bear the burden of racism in Aotearoa New Zealand with a potentially substantial impact on their health and well-being. This is a breach of Indigenous (for Māori) and other international human rights and should be motivation to act to eliminate racism in all its forms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Supermicrosurgery demands more refined skills compared to traditional microsurgery, necessitating comprehensive training prior to clinical implementation. Despite the existence of various training models, they often fall short in terms of cost, ethical considerations, and infection risk. Our objective was to develop and evaluate novel training models for supermicrosurgery that are cost-effective, ethical, and risk-free. We fabricated tubes using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) liquid glue, polyvinyl acetate resin (PAR) wood glue, and hydrocolloid dressing (HCD), aiming to identify suitable, low-cost candidates for a supermicrosurgery training model. These tubes were anastomosed under a microscope using 10–0 or 11–0 nylon sutures. We assessed the time and cost involved in tube fabrication, their diameters, and the overall feasibility of the models. The average time and cost to fabricate a 15-mm-long luminal tube were 33.5 min and 0.02 USD for the PVA group, 23 min and 0.02 USD for the PAR group, and 63 s and 0.40 USD for the HCD group, respectively. The average diameter of the tubes was 0.49, 0.58, and 1.55 mm in the PVA, PAR, and HCD groups, respectively. The PVA and PAR tubes, with their transparent and thin walls, facilitated easier evaluation of anastomosis patency compared to the HCD tubes. We successfully used non-living materials to develop new supermicrosurgery training models, characterized by their low cost, absence of ethical concerns, and elimination of infection risk. BackgroundMyocardial infarction is followed by cardiac dysfunction, cellular death, and ventricular remodeling, including tissue fibrosis. S100A4 protein plays multiple roles in cellular survival, and tissue fibrosis, but the relative role of the S100A4 in the myocardium after myocardial infarction is unknown. This study aims to investigate the role of S100A4 in myocardial remodeling and cardiac function following infarct damage.Methods and resultsS100A4 expression is low in the adult myocardium, but significantly increased following myocardial infarction. Deletion of S100A4 increased cardiac damage after myocardial infarction, whereas cardiac myocyte-specific overexpression of S100A4 protected the infarcted myocardium. Decreased cardiac function in S100A4 Knockout mice was accompanied with increased cardiac remodeling, fibrosis, and diminished capillary density in the remote myocardium. Loss of S100A4 caused increased apoptotic cell death both in vitro and in vivo in part mediated by decreased VEGF expression. Conversely, S100A4 overexpression protected cells against apoptosis in vitro and in vivo. Increased pro-survival AKT-signaling explained reduced apoptosis in S100A4 overexpressing cells.ConclusionS100A4 expression protects cardiac myocytes against myocardial ischemia and is required for stabilization of cardiac function after MI.

In Cameroon, popular belief associates American literature with its country's economic and political greatness. Yet, if millions of Cameroonians show a growing enthusiasm for a visit to the US, just a few are interested in learning its literature. Using theories on the reading and teaching of literature, statistical data based on a questionnaire, as well as mythological and comparative approaches to literature, this paper intends to point out the various causes of Cameroonian students' lukewarm response to this literature and suggest some remedial strategies that may improve the reception of this discipline in Cameroon. The strategies recommended include the action of the Yaoundé-based American and Cameroonian officials, action which can foster the readers' and scholars' greater exposure to this discipline; the use of new technologies in the teaching of literature, which today, more than yesterday, has become a multimedia affair (Purves, 1997); and the comparative approach to the study of literary texts, as this approach connects American literature to the Cameroonian learners' experience.

The low molecular weight protein tyrosine phosphatase (LMPTP), encoded by the ACP1 gene, is a ubiquitously expressed phosphatase whose in vivo function in the heart and in cardiac diseases remains unknown. To investigate the in vivo role of LMPTP in cardiac function, we generated mice with genetic inactivation of the Acp1 locus and studied their response to long-term pressure overload. Acp1(-/-) mice develop normally and ageing mice do not show pathology in major tissues under basal conditions. However, Acp1(-/-) mice are strikingly resistant to pressure overload hypertrophy and heart failure. Lmptp expression is high in the embryonic mouse heart, decreased in the postnatal stage, and increased in the adult mouse failing heart. We also show that LMPTP expression increases in end-stage heart failure in humans. Consistent with their protected phenotype, Acp1(-/-) mice subjected to pressure overload hypertrophy have attenuated fibrosis and decreased expression of fibrotic genes. Transcriptional profiling and analysis of molecular signalling show that the resistance of Acp1(-/-) mice to pathological cardiac stress correlates with marginal re-expression of fetal cardiac genes, increased insulin receptor beta phosphorylation, as well as PKA and ephrin receptor expression, and inactivation of the CaMKIIδ pathway. Our data show that ablation of Lmptp inhibits pathological cardiac remodelling and suggest that inhibition of LMPTP may be of therapeutic relevance for the treatment of human heart failure.

This paper presents a comparison of the classification performance of a fuzzy clustering based support vector machine (SVM) with reinforcement learning and the previously developed fuzzy clustering based SVM for autocoding. While SVM is a machine leaning method known for high classification performance, there is an issue that SVM requires a large amount of processing time for large complex data. Therefore, in this study, we develop a classification method of fuzzy clustering based SVM with reinforcement learning to reduce the processing time for SVM. The purpose of this paper is comparing both classification performance and processing time of the developed fuzzy clustering based SVM with reinforcement learning and the ordinary fuzzy clustering based SVM. Numerical examples with governmental survey data, the Family Income and Expenditure survey data, show a better performance of the fuzzy clustering based SVM with reinforcement learning. Introduction: Evaluation of lymph circulation is significant in lower extremity lymphedema (LEL) management. Single-photon emission computed tomography-computed tomography (SPECT-CT) has been introduced for lymphedema evaluation, but its characteristic findings are yet fully clarified. The purpose of this study was to reveal typical SPECT-CT findings in secondary LEL by contrasting with indocyanine green (ICG) lymphography findings. Methods: This is a single-center retrospective case–control study. Medical charts of cancer survivors who underwent SPECT-CT and ICG lymphography for secondary LEL were reviewed. Lymphedematous limbs were defined as ICG lymphography stage I–V and non-lymphedematous limbs were defined as ICG lymphography stage 0. Characteristic SPECT-CT findings were identified in early phase and delay phase, and prevalence of the findings was compared between lymphedematous limbs and non-lymphedematous limbs. Results: Thirty-four limbs of 17 patients were included in this study; 6 (17.6%) non-lymphedematous limbs and 28 (82.4%) lymphedematous limbs. Four characteristic SPECT-CT findings were identified; delayed enhancement of the main lower leg lymphatic pathway (DML), few delayed inguinal lymph nodes enhancement (FDN), early phase discontinuous enhancement of the main lymphatic pathway (EDM), and nonenhancement of the deep lymphatic pathways in early phase (NDE). Between lymphedematous and non-lymphedematous limbs, there were statistically significant differences in FDN (64.3% vs. 0%, p = 0.004) and EDM (67.9% vs. 0%, p = 0.002). High school students' accuracy in estimating the cost of college (AECC) was examined by utilizing a new methodological approach, the absolute-deviation-continuous construct. This study used the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09) data and examined 10,530 11th grade students in order to measure their AECC for 4-year public and private postsecondary institutions. The findings revealed that high school students tended to overestimate the cost of college, especially 4-year public in-state tuition. Second, this investigation explored AECC differences across racial/ethnic groups. Lastly, this research examined how AECC differed based on racial/ethnic and college financial-related factors (importance of cost on college enrollment, knowledge of and intent to complete FAFSA, and eligibility for financial aid). This examination is important because it is the first critical analysis of AECC and is timely given the data were collected immediately after the Great Recession.
