51. Passive galaxies in the early Universe: ALMA confirmation of z ∼ 3−5 candidates in the CANDELS GOODS-South field.

Abstract

The selection of red, passive galaxies in the early Universe is very challenging, especially beyond z ∼ 3, and it is crucial to constrain theoretical modelling of the processes responsible for their rapid assembly and abrupt shut-down of the star formation. We present here the analysis of ALMA archival observations of 26 out of the 30 galaxies in the deep CANDELS GOODS-South field that we identified as passive at z ∼ 3−5 by means of a careful and conservative SED fitting analysis. ALMA data are used to verify the potential contamination from red, dusty but star-forming sources that could enter the sample due to similar optical–near-IR colours. With the exception of a few marginal detections at <3σ, we could only infer upper limits, both on individual sources and on the stacks. We translated the ALMA continuum measurements into corresponding SFRs, using a variety of far-IR models. These SFRs are compared with those predicted by secondary star-forming solutions of the optical fits and with the expected position of the star formation main sequence. This analysis confirms the passive nature of nine candidates with high confidence and suggests that the classification is correct for at least half of the sample in a statistical sense. For the remaining sources the analysis remain inconclusive because available ALMA data are not deep enough, although the stacking results corroborate their passive nature. The objective of this article is characterize of process the agro-industrial restructuring of the poultry industry in south-central Mato Grosso do Sul, from the relations between JBS and BRF companies and integrated producers. The presence of these groups internationalized, has provoked a process of restructuring of the local poultry industry. For poultry farmers, it has been discussed a new production scale, known as "Dark House" system, requiring a high degree of investment. Thus, the actuation of these internationalized companies with BNDES investments can generate the concentration and centralization of chicken production, causing some producers automate and increase their production scales, making the best capitalized and may result in decrease in integrated poultry farmers dissatisfied with the new logic of actuation of these companies. Abstract

While pH-driven interconversion of tetraquinoxaline cavitands (QxCav) from vase to kite conformation has been extensively studied both in solution and at interfaces, cavitands behavior in solid matrices is still unexplored. Therefore, the synthesis of a new class of quinoxaline cavitand based copolymers is here reported; a soluble linear poly(butyl methacrylate) (PBMA) and an insoluble cross-linked polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), ensuring a convenient incorporation of the switchable unit, were chosen as polymer matrices. Conformational studies, performed both in solution and at the solid state, confirmed the retention of vase ? kite switching behavior when moving from monomeric units to polymeric structures. We report on the progress and status of the integration and test of APEmille, a SIMD parallel computer optimised for Lattice Gauge Theory (LGT) with a peak performance in the TeraFlops range. After extensive development and testing of the design, a first 128-node system has quickly and successfully been integrated. Tests with physics production runs are to be started soon.

Abstract

We present results for the radiative decay B\rightarrow K^* \gamma, obtained by using the Clover action at \beta = 6.0 on APE. The compatibility between the scaling laws predicted by the Heavy Quark Effective Theory (HQET) and pole dominance is discussed. The final result depends crucially on the assumed q^2-dependence of the form factors.

We report on the associated production of charmed hadrons in pi(-)-nucleon interactions at root s approximate to 26 GeV at the CERN Omega' spectrometer. Results on the azimuthal correlation of charmed particle pairs are presented and compared to the predictions of Next-to-Leading-Order QCD calculations.

Abstract

We present results for the kaon B parameter obtained by APE-100 from a sample of 100 configurations using the Wilson action and 200 configurations using the Clover action, on a 18(3) x 64 lattice at beta = 6.0. We have also compared the results for B-K using two different values for the effective coupling constant g. We observe a strong dependence of B-K on the prescription adopted for g in the Wilson case, contrary to the results of the Clover case which are almost unaffected by the choice of g.

Abstract

We search for passive galaxies at z > 3 in the GOODS-South field, using different techniques based on photometric data, and paying attention to develop methods that are sensitive to objects that have become passive shortly before the epoch of observation. We use CANDELS HST catalogues, ultra-deep Ks data and new IRAC photometry, performing spectral energy distribution fitting using models with abruptly quenched star formation histories. We then single out galaxies which are best fitted by a passively evolving model, and having only low probability (<5 per cent) star-forming solutions. We verify the effects of including nebular lines emission, and we consider possible solutions at different redshifts. The number of selected sources dramatically depends on the models used in the spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting. Without including emission lines and with photometric redshifts fixed at the CANDELS estimate, we single out 30 candidates; the inclusion of nebular lines emission reduces the sample to 10 objects; allowing for solutions at different redshifts, only two galaxies survive as robust candidates. Most of the candidates are not far-infrared emitters, corroborating their association with passive galaxies. Our results translate into an upper limit in the number density of ∼0.173 arcmin2 above the detection limit. However, we conclude that the selection of passive galaxies at z > 3 is still subject to significant uncertainties, being sensitive to assumptions in the SED modelling adopted and to the relatively low S/N of the objects. By means of dedicated simulations, we show that JWST will greatly enhance the accuracy, allowing for a much more robust classification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The light quark results from three different simulations are summarized. We get consistent results, within our statistics, between smeared and non smeared data. A comparison is performed with similar results from the UKQCD collaboration. All runs have been performed on two 6.4 GF APE computers [1].

Abstract

We present a calculation of f(B) in the static limit, obtained by numerical simulation of quenched QCD, at beta = 6.2 on a 18(3) x 64 lattice, using the SW-Clover quark action. The decay constant has been extracted by studying heavy (static)-light correlation functions of different smeared operators, on a sample of 220 gauge field configurations. We have obtained f(B)static = (290 +/- 15 +/- 45) MeV, where the first error comes from the uncertainty in the determination of the matrix element and the second comes from the uncertainty in the lattice spacing. We also obtain M(Bs) - M(Bd) = (70 +/- 10) MeV and f(Bs)stat/f(Bd)stat = 1.11 (3). A comparison of our results with other calculations of the same quantity is made.

Abstract

We present results for the Kaon $B$ parameter from a sample of $200$ configurations using the Wilson action and $460$ configurations using the Clover action, on a $18^3 \times 64$ lattice at $��=6.0$. A slight improvement of the chiral behaviour of $B_K$ is observed due to the Clover action. We have also compared the results for $B_K$ obtained from two different procedures for the boosting of the coupling constant $g$. We observe a strong dependence of $B_K$ on the prescription adopted for $g$ in the Wilson case, contrary to the results of the Clover case which are almost unaffected by the choice of $g$. Combining some recently obtained non perturbative estimates for the renormalisation constants with our Clover matrix element, we observe a significant improvement in the chiral behaviour of $B_K$., 3 pages, Latex, Postscript file with figures available at ftp://hpteo.roma1.infn.it/pub/preprints/lat94/donini ; to appear in Lattice '94, Nucl. Abstract

We present a calculation of $f_B$ in the static limit, obtained by numerical simulation of quenched QCD, at $\beta=6.2$ on a $18~3 \times 64$ lattice, using the SW-Clover quark action. The decay constant has been extracted by studying heavy(static)-light correlation functions of different smeared operators, on a sample of 220 gauge field configurations. We have obtained $f_B~{static}=(290 \pm 15 \pm 45)$ MeV, where the first error comes from the uncertainty in the determination of the matrix element and the second comes from the uncertainty in the lattice spacing. We also obtain $M_{B_s}-M_{B_d}= (70 \pm 10)$ MeV and $f~{stat}_{B_s}/f~{stat}_{B_d}=1.11(3)$. A comparison of our results with other calculations of the same quantity is made. Abstract

This paper presents the status of the APEmille project, which is essentially completed, as far as machine development and construction is concerned. Several large installations of APEmille are in use for physics production runs leading to many new results presented at this conference. This paper briefly summarizes the APEmille architecture, reviews the status of the installations and presents some performance figures for physics codes.

Abstract

We propose to carry out a broad-based programme of R&D on level-1 trigger systems for LHC experiments. We will consider the overall level-1 which coordinates different subtriggers and which interacts with the front end electronics and with the level-2 system. Careful attention will be paid to systems aspects and problems of synchronization within the pipelined processor system. Trigger algorithms for selecting events with high-pt electrons, photons, muons, jets and large missing Et will be evaluated by physics simulation studies. We will study possible implementations of such trigger algorithms in fast electronics by making conceptual design studies and using behavioural simulation models. For critical areas more detailed design studies will be made, and prototypes of some key elements will be constructed and tested. The proposed R&D project builds on existing studies and will complement other R&D projects already funded by the DRDC.
