The electrochemical synthesis of ammonia through the nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) is receiving much attention, since it is considered a promising alternative to the Haber–Bosch process. In NRR experiments, a Nafion membrane is generally adopted as a separator. However, its use is controversial since ammonia can be trapped in the membrane, to some extent, or even pass through it. We systematically investigate the interaction of a Nafion membrane with ammonia and with an electrolyte and compare it with Zirfon as a possible alternative separator. We show that Nafion containing ammonia can easily release it when immersed in a 0.1 M Na2SO4 ammonia-free electrolyte, due to the cation exchange mechanism (Na+-NH4+). Since Na2SO4 is a commonly adopted electrolyte for NRR experiments, this may cause serious measurement errors and non-reproducible results. The same experiments performed using the polysulfone Zirfon separator clearly show that it is immune to interactions with ammonia, because of its different ion conduction mechanism. The findings provide a deeper understanding of the choice of membrane and electrolyte to be adopted for NRR tests, and may allow one to obtain more accurate and reliable results.

Nanocomposite systems comprised of a poly(ethylene vinyl acetate) (EVA) matrix and carbon black (CB) or graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) were used to investigate conductivity and crystallisation dynamics using a commercially relevant melt-state mixing process. Crystallisation kinetics and morphology, as investigated by DSC and SEM, turn out to depend on the interplay of (i) the interphase interactions between matrix and filler, and (ii) the degree of filler agglomeration. For the GNP-based systems, an almost constant conductivity value was observed for all compositions upon cooling, something not observed for the CB-based compositions. These conductivity changes reflect structural and morphological changes that can be associated with positive and negative thermal expansion coefficients. GNP-based systems were observed to exhibit a percolation threshold of approximately 2.2 vol%, lower than the 4.4 vol% observed for the CB-based systems.

The complete understanding of polymers crystallization kinetic in real industrial processes is fundamental for designing materials towards specific applications. Hereby, we propose a method for fast cooling preparation of polymers by means of air and water sprays, which presents several enhancements with respect to previous similar devices. The new device was built in order to fulfill safety and cleaning standards required in an industrial environment. Furthermore, the small dimensions and the limited costs enable its implementation in any laboratory. Moreover, preliminary results on selected isotactic-polypropylenes (iPP) were obtained in a cooling range from 0.01 to a few thousand °C/s, in order to validate the present method by comparison with previous literature results and to highlight the large range of studies that can be carried out with this set-up. Ex-situ analysis with WAXS, DSC and AFM techniques were performed to characterize such prepared samples.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination is a severe problem in the environment and produces detrimental effects on crop productivity and quality. Characterization of crop performance at different Cd concentrations is crucial to identify pollution-safe cultivars with low translocation efficiency to aboveground organs to be used for food safety. Here, we estimated germination, survival, growth, photosynthetic pigments, Cd bioaccumulation, among-organs translocation, and ionic balance in six Solanum melongena L. (eggplant) cultivars from the central Mediterranean basin. On two cultivars, we also analyzed expression of genes involved in Cd uptake, i.e., heavy metal ATPases (HMAs) and metal tolerance proteins (MTPs). We found that Cd has a negative effect on all the investigated parameters but with relevant among-cultivar differences. Cd-treated plants showed a decrease in germination rate and survival. Photosynthetic pigments showed opposite trends, i.e., with increasing Cd contents, we observed a decrease in chlorophylls and an increase in carotenoids. The investigated cultivars showed high ability of sequestrating Cd in roots but a low translocation efficiency to the aboveground organs, suggesting a good potential for food safety. The response of plants to Cd was mediated by a different expression of the MTP and HMA gene families. Our study represents the first comprehensive investigation of Cd tolerance in eggplant varieties from the Mediterranean basin and highlights the importance of comparative studies to identify Cd-tolerant cultivars.

Background: The risk of Cardiovascular (CV) events is higher in HIV-infected patients (HIV+) compared to HIV-uninfected persons (HIV−). Large artery stiffness, a well-documented predictor of adverse CV prognosis, may mediate this enhanced risk. It is usually assessed by measuring aortic Pulse Wave Velocity (aPWV). Studies examining arterial stiffness in HIV+ yielded inconsistent results. We performed a meta-analysis with the aim to evaluate the association of HIV infection and its therapy [Antiretroviral Therapy (ART)] with aPWV. Design and Method: The Standardized Mean Difference (SMD) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals were calculated for aPWV in different comparison groups. Statistical heterogeneity, assessed by Q-test and I2 statistic, was observed in all these comparisons. Therefore, random effects model was implemented. Results: In a total of 12 studies, naive HIV+ (n = 547) showed increased aPWV compared to HIV− (n = 864): SMD = 0.333 (0.125–0.542), p < 0.002. A total of 22 studies were identified comparing HIV+ treated with ART (n = 3348) to HIV− (n = 2547) showing higher values of aPWV in the former than in latter: SMD = 0.391 (0.225–0.556), p < 0.001. In 10 studies, HIV+ treated with ART (n = 761) exhibited greater aPWV values than those of naive HIV+ (n = 457): SMD = 0.262 (0.006–0.518), p = 0.045. Conclusion: Our meta-analysis seems to suggest that HIV infection “per se” and ART may impair aortic distensibility. However, interpretation of our results needs caution due to between-study heterogeneity and some potential publication biases.

Omega-3 fatty acid dietary supplements have become increasingly popular with consumers due to their multiple health benefits. In this study, the presence of mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOH) was investigated in seventeen commercial samples of such supplements, characterized by different formulations. The analyses were performed using on-line liquid chromatography–gas chromatography (with flame ionization detection), which is considered the most efficient method for the determination of MOH in foodstuffs. Analyte transfer was performed by using the retention gap technique, with partially concurrent solvent evaporation. Various degrees of mineral oil saturated hydrocarbon contamination (from 2.4 ppm to 375.7 ppm) were found, with an average value of 49.9 ppm. Different C-number range contaminations were determined, with the >C25–≤C35 range always found with an average value of 26.9 ppm. All samples resulted free of mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons, except for two samples in which a contamination was found at the 9.9 and 6.6 ppm levels, respectively.

Abstract The metabolic effects of an oral supplementation with a Curcuma longa extract, at a dose nutritionally relevant with common human use, on hepatic metabolism in rats fed a high fructose and saturated fatty acid (HFS) diet was evaluated. High-resolution magic-angle spinning NMR and GC/MS in combination with multivariate analysis have been employed to characterize the NMR metabolite profiles and fatty acid composition of liver tissue respectively. The results showed a clear discrimination between HFS groups and controls involving metabolites such as glucose, glycogen, amino acids, acetate, choline, lysophosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, and β-hydroxybutyrate as well as an increase of MUFAs and a decrease of n-6 and n-3 PUFAs. Although the administration of CL did not counteract deleterious effects of the HFS diet, some metabolites, namely some n-6 PUFA and n-3 PUFA, and betaine were found to increase significantly in liver samples from rats having received extract of curcuma compared to those fed the HFS diet alone. This result suggests that curcuminoids may affect the transmethylation pathway and/or osmotic regulation. CL extract supplementation in rats appears to increase some of the natural defences preventing the development of fatty liver by acting on the choline metabolism to increase fat export from the liver.

Outdoor air pollution is responsible for more than 4 million premature deaths worldwide and its contribution is particularly severe in industrial contaminated sites, where epidemiological studies highlight often mortality rate larger than the national average. In the framework of the CISAS project, this study investigates spatial and temporal variability of air pollution across three industrial contaminated sites in southern Italy classified as “High Risk Area of Environmental Crisis”: Crotone, Milazzo, and Priolo. The environmental analysis employed three investigation approaches:—meteorological characterization of the sites with analyses of local air mass circulation;—statistical evaluation of the continuous measurements of gaseous pollutants and PM concentration;—determination of mass concentration and detailed speciation of the chemical components of atmospheric particulate matter during intensive field campaigns. Continuous trace gases and aerosol measurements (including NOx, SO2, O3, NMHC, PM10, and PM2.5) over the period 2016–2018 were analyzed, and specific intensive field experiments (2016–2017), representative of winter and summer conditions, were carried out in order to determine PM10 and PM2.5 chemical composition. The analyses of PM components (ions, elemental composition, trace organic pollutants, organic carbon, and elemental carbon) show concentrations typical of rural and urban areas. The results concerning gaseous pollutants and PM concentration showed a general compliance of the concentrations of some regulated species with the limits set by the EU Ambient Air Quality (AAQ) Directive. However, in particular in the industrial areas of Milazzo and Priolo, the analysis here reported highlights the need for a stringent regulation on NMHC ambient concentration and composition, further investigation of fine particle composition and atmospheric processing, and a deeper understanding of the role of anthropogenic emissions on ozone formation, also considering the World Health Organization (WHO) limits.

This data article presents the datasets obtained during the years 2011–2012 in the Provinces of Bắc Giang and Bắc Ninh (Northern Vietnam) in the framework of an International Cooperation project aimed at the restoration and preservation of natural resources together with the improvement of life conditions of the local population. All information relative to sampling strategy, location and description of the studied sites are reported, together with analytical data (i.e. grain size, Total Organic Carbon, Organic Nitrogen, C/N ratio, δ13C, PolyChlorinated Biphenyls, Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, PolyBrominated Diphenyls Ethers, PolyChlorinated Dibenzo-p-Dioxins and Furans, OrganoChlorine Pesticides, Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons). In addition, maximum admitted levels, quality standards and emission limits set by the Vietnamese environmental regulations are reported in comparison to Italian ones for the following parameters and environmental compartments: noise, soils, air, drinking and groundwaters, sediments. Sarcoidosis is a complex systemic granulomatous disease of unknown etiology characterized by the presence of activated macrophages and Th1/Th17 effector cells. Data mining of our RNA-Seq analysis of CD14+monocytes showed enrichment for metabolic and hypoxia inducible factor (HIF) pathways in sarcoidosis. Further investigation revealed that sarcoidosis macrophages and monocytes exhibit higher protein levels for HIF-α isoforms, HIF-1β, and their transcriptional co-activator p300 as well as glucose transporter 1 (Glut1). In situ hybridization of sarcoidosis granulomatous lung tissues showed abundance of HIF-1α in the center of granulomas. The abundance of HIF isoforms was mechanistically linked to elevated IL-1β and IL-17 since targeted down regulation of HIF-1α via short interfering RNA or a HIF-1α inhibitor decreased their production. Pharmacological intervention using chloroquine, a lysosomal inhibitor, decreased lysosomal associated protein 2 (LAMP2) and HIF-1α levels and modified cytokine production. These data suggest that increased activity of HIF-α isoforms regulate Th1/Th17 mediated inflammation in sarcoidosis.

Breast cancer (BC) is the most common form of cancer among women worldwide. Despite the huge advancements in its treatment, the exact etiology of breast cancer still remains unresolved. There is an increasing interest in the role of the gut microbiome in modulating the anti-cancer therapeutic response. It seems that alteration of the microbiome-derived metabolome potentially promotes carcinogenesis. Taken together, metabolomics has arisen as a fascinating new omics field to screen promising metabolic biomarkers. In this study, fecal metabolite profiling was performed using NMR spectroscopy, to identify potential biomarker candidates that can predict response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) for breast cancer. Metabolic profiles of feces from patients (n = 8) following chemotherapy treatment cycles were studied. Interestingly, amino acids were found to be upregulated, while lactate and fumaric acid were downregulated in patients under the second and third cycles compared with patients before treatment. Furthermore, short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) were significantly differentiated between the studied groups. These results strongly suggest that chemotherapy treatment plays a key role in modulating the fecal metabolomic profile of BC patients. In conclusion, we demonstrate the feasibility of identifying specific fecal metabolic profiles reflecting biochemical changes that occur during the chemotherapy treatment. These data give an interesting insight that may complement and improve clinical tools for BC monitoring.

The evaluation of acoustic temporal rhythms in wide-ranging cetaceans can reveal patterns in animal spatial presence and the occurrence of periodical phenomena. Here, we aimed at assessing the temporal patterns of dolphin’s acoustic presence in a shallow-water area in the Sicily Strait (Mediterranean Sea). Whistles were collected continuously for 14 months from an acoustic monitoring station installed aboard of an elastic seamark. Over a total of 6955 h of recording, 14,048 signals were identified using both automatic and visual methods. Three parameters were analyzed: hourly presence (HP), used as a proxy of the presence of dolphins in the area; detection rate (DR), indicating the acoustic activity rate of dolphins measured per hour in the entire dataset; and detection rate in presence of dolphins (DRD), indicating the acoustic activity rate of dolphins considering only the hours when whistles were recorded. The highest values of both HP and DR were reached during the night, and the Autumn and Winter months, suggesting an increase in the dolphin’s occurrence and a possible moving away and towards the monitoring station potentially following prey. DRD, instead, showed an almost uniform distribution throughout the day implying that when the animals are close to the monitoring station, the acoustic activity does not show any pattern. However, possible changes in the communication exchange along the seasons were suggested. This study complements other work on this subject, improving the knowledge of dolphins’ acoustic activity in the area.

Bioactive compounds of different Campania native sweet pepper varieties were evaluated. Polyphenols ranged between 1.37 mmol g−1 and 3.42 mmol g−1, β-carotene was abundant in the red variety “Cazzone” (7.05 μg g−1). Yellow and red varieties showed a content of ascorbic acid not inferior to 0.82 mg g−1, while in some green varieties the presence of ascorbic acid was almost inconsistent. Interrelationships between the parameters analyzed and the varieties showed that ascorbic acid could represent the factor mostly influencing the antioxidant activity. Polyphenol profile was different among the varieties, with a general prevalence of acidic phenols in yellow varieties and of flavonoids in red varieties. Principal Component Analysis, applied to ascorbic acid, total polyphenols and β-carotene, revealed that two of the green varieties (“Friariello napoletano” and “Friariello Sigaretta”) were well clustered and that the yellow variety “Corno di capra” showed similarity with the green varieties, in particular with “Friariello Nocerese”. This was confirmed by the interrelationships applied to polyphenol composition, which let us to light on a clustering of several red and yellow varieties, and that mainly the yellow ”Corno di capra” was closer to the green varieties of “Friariello”.

Coal tar is a complex mixture of organic compounds obtained from the thermal treatment of coal; it contains several different chemical classes of compounds, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, phenols and different heterocyclic compounds including sulphur derivatives. In the present research, a target analysis was carried out for the characterisation of fourteen different classes of organic sulphur compounds in coal tar by using cryogenically-modulated (CM) comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-high resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-HR ToFMS) with the support of target analyte finding, a specific software function. Furthermore, absolute quantification data were obtained by using eight pure standard sulphur compounds, and 1-fluoronaphthalene as internal standard. Several figures-of-merit of the proposed method were measured (linearity, intra-day precision, limits of detection and quantification). Finally, the overall analytical performance of CM GC×GC-HR ToFMS was evaluated, in relation to MS similarities, mass accuracies, second-dimension peak widths, peak capacity and tailing factors. The approach proved itself as being a powerful analytical platform, benefiting from the high sensitivity, selectivity and resolving power, of both the GC and MS sides.

Myelolipomas are uncommon, benign tumors which typically occur in the adrenal glands and consist of mature adipose tissue and benign hematopoietic components. Myelolipomas can occur outside of the adrenal glands, but the presacral region, retroperitoneum, pelvis, and mediastinum are unusual locations for these tumors. It is important to recognize this entity in these locations since they can attain massive sizes leading to pressure symptoms and need to be differentiated from the malignant tumors like liposarcomas. We present a myelolipoma case in the presacral region. Our case illustrates the clinical approach of these tumors in such unusual locations.

When nano-magnets are coupled to random external sources, their magnetization becomes a random variable, whose properties are defined by an induced probability density, that can be reconstructed from its moments, using the Langevin equation, for mapping the noise to the dynamical degrees of freedom. When the spin dynamics is discretized in time, a general fluctuation-dissipation theorem, valid for non-Markovian noise, can be established, even when zero modes are present. We discuss the subtleties that arise, when Gilbert damping is present and the mapping between noise and spin degrees of freedom is non–linear.

The Strait of Sicily plays a crucial role in determining the water-mass exchanges and related properties between the western and eastern Mediterranean. Hydrographic measurements carried out from 1998 to 2013 allowed the identification of the main water masses present in the Strait of Sicily: a surface layer composed of Atlantic water (AW) flowing eastward, intermediate and deep layers mainly composed of Levantine intermediate water (LIW), and transitional eastern Mediterranean deep water (tEMDW) flowing in the opposite direction. Furthermore, for the first time, the signature of intermittent presence of western intermediate water (WIW) is also highlighted in the northwestern part of the study area (12.235° E, 37.705° N). The excellent area coverage allowed to highlight the high horizontal and vertical inter-annual variability affecting the study area and also to recognize the permanent character of the main mesoscale phenomena present in the surface water layer. Moreover, strong temperature-salinity correlations in the intermediate layer, for specific time intervals, seem to be linked to the reversal of surface circulation in the central Ionian Sea. The analysis of CTD data in deeper water layer indicates the presence of a large volume of tEMDW in the Strait of Sicily during the summers of 2006 and 2009.

The present research is focused on the in-depth qualitative analysis of three types of lime essential oil (EO), viz., Key (A and B) and Persian, using the off-line combination of normal phase high performance liquid chromatography (NP-HPLC) and comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography−quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC × GC-QMS). The first analytical dimension (NP-HPLC) was exploited for the isolation of the hydrocarbon constituents from the oxygenated ones. Each fraction was then reduced in volume and analyzed using (cryogenic modulation) GC × GC-QMS. Peak assignment was carried out through the combined use of mass spectral database and linear retention index matching processes. The powerful four-dimensional technology enabled the separation and identification of a very high number (153) of lime essential oil volatile compounds.

Crystallization of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) at the interface with crystalline films of two commercially employed nucleating agents (sodium benzoate (NaBz) and sodium 2,2’-methylene bis-(4,6-di-tert-butylphenyl)phosphate (NA-11)) and with a glass fiber (GF) was investigated using a polarized optical microscope. The analysis of the light intensity evolution during the crystallization process enabled the successful estimation of the time at which the crystal growth began, i.e., the induction time (ti), at various crystallization temperatures. Meaningful differences in the ti values were observed between the investigated systems. Moreover, the ti data have been analyzed according to different nucleation models proposed in the literature, which consider either the time to form the first crystalline layer in contact with the substrate or the time required to grow a cluster of critical size. It has been found that the two models are applicable in different temperature ranges depending on the efficiency of the given substrate. Therefore, in order to obtain the value of the surface free energy difference function, Δσ, which is directly related to the nucleation energy barrier and useful for the definition of a universal nucleating efficiency scale, a model that considers both the above-mentioned times was fitted to the overall data. The values of Δσ for the nucleation of iPP on the surface of the different substrates are thus obtained and discussed in the framework of the literature results.

A number of reports have indicated a relationship between bacterial resistance to antibiotics and their lipid composition. In the present study, we characterized the lipid profiles of American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) and clinical strains of Staphylococcus aureus and its correlation with antibiotic resistance and hydrophobicity. The following strains were used: S. aureus ATCC 6538P, S. aureus ATCC 43300 (MRSA), seven clinical strains from the pharynges, two strains from duodenal ulcers, four strains from hip prostheses, and one strain from the conjunctiva. Lipid-related differentiation was observed across the S. aureus strains: the higher abundance of anteiso-pentadecanoic acid (anteiso-C15:0) and anteiso-heptadecanoic acid (anteiso-C17:0), followed by iso-pentadecanoic acid (iso-C15:0), suggested that these were common lipids. Iso-tridecanoic acid (iso-C13:0) and anteiso-tridecanoic acid (anteiso-C13:0), iso-hexadecanoic acid (iso-C16:0) and anteiso-hexadecanoic acid (anteiso-C16:0), and all forms of octadecanoic acid (C18:0) were usually detected in low abundance. Strains isolated from pharynges showed the highest ratio of branched/straight chains. A distinction in two clusters based on the amount and type of bacterial lipids identified was obtained, which correlated to the antibiotic resistance, the strains origin, and the cell-surface hydrophobicity. We report a potential correlation between the lipid profile of S. aureus strains, site of infection, antibiotic resistance, and cell-surface hydrophobicity. These results, which still need further insights, could be a first step to identifying antibiotic resistance in response to environmental adaptation.

The Little Ice Age (LIA) is the last episode of a series of Holocene climatic anomalies. There is still little knowledge on the response of the marine environment to the pronounced cooling of the LIA and to the transition towards the 20th century global warming. Here we present decadal-scale coccolithophore data from four short cores recovered from the central Mediterranean Sea (northern Sicily Channel and Tyrrhenian Sea), which on the basis of 210Pb activity span the last 200–350 years. The lowermost part of the record of one of the cores from the Sicily Channel, Station 407, which extends down to 1650 AD, is characterized by drastic changes in productivity. Specifically, below 1850 AD, the decrease in abundance of F. profunda and the increase of placoliths, suggest increased productivity. The chronology of this change is related to the main phase of the Little Ice Age, which might have impacted the hydrography of the southern coast of Sicily and promoted vertical mixing in the water column. The comparison with climatic forcings points out the importance of stronger and prolonged northerly winds, together with decreased solar irradiance.

Copepods from La Plata, Argentina were investigated to characterize the local community of larvivorous copepods inhabiting mosquito breeding sites and to identify new predator species of the mosquitoes which occur in artificial containers, Aedes aegypti and Culex pipiens. Diversity of larvivorous cyclopoids was highest in permanent pools. Predation by sex and age, selectivity on mosquito species, and daily predation rate during five days were studied for Acanthocyclops robustus, Diacyclops uruguayensis, Macrocyclops albidus and Mesocyclops longisetus. Female copepods presented the highest predatory capacity. No predatory preference for mosquito species was found. According to overall predation potential, copepods were ranked as follows: D. uruguayensis < A. robustus < M. albidus < M. longisetus. Copepod tolerance to desiccation and capacity to survive in water from artificial containers were also evaluated. D. uruguayensis and A. robustus survived under dry conditions, but D. uruguayensis showed lower survival in water from cemetery flower vases. M. albidus did not survive under dry conditions and did not tolerate water extracted from artificial containers. M. longisetus survival was not severely reduced after desiccation or breeding in water from flower vases. The Neotropical cyclopoids D. uruguayensis and A. robustus can be considered good candidates and merit further research as biological control agents for mosquitoes. Rev. Biol. La diversidad de ciclopoides larvívoros fue máxima en charcos permanentes. Se examinó la depredación por sexos y edad, la selectividad por especies de mosquito, y la tasa de depredación diaria durante cinco días en Acanthocyclops robustus, Diacyclops uruguayensis, Macrocyclops albidus y Mesocyclops longisetus. Los copépodos hembra presentaron la capacidad depredadora más alta. No se encontró preferencia por alguna especie de mosquito. De acuerdo al potencial de depredación en general, los copépodos se ordenan así: D. uruguayensis < A. robustus < M. albidus < M. longisetus. También se evaluó la tolerancia a la desecación del hábitat y la capacidad de resistir en agua de contenedores artificiales. D. uruguayensis y A. robustus sobrevivieron en condiciones de sequía, pero D. uruguayensis presentó menor supervivencia en agua de floreros de cementerio. M. albidus no sobrevivió condiciones de sequía y no toleró el agua extraída de contenedores artificiales. Los ciclopoides neotropicales D. uruguayensis and A. robustus son buenos candidatos y merecen investigación ulterior como agentes de control biológico de mosquitos.

We explored, using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) metabolomics and fatty acids profiling, the effects of a common nutritional complement, Curcuma longa, at a nutritionally relevant dose with human use, administered in conjunction with an unbalanced diet. Indeed, traditional food supplements have been long used to counter metabolic impairments induced by unbalanced diets. Here, rats were fed either a standard diet, a high level of fructose and saturated fatty acid (HFS) diet, a diet common to western countries and that certainly contributes to the epidemic of insulin resistance (IR) syndrome, or a HFS diet with a Curcuma longa extract (1% of curcuminoids in the extract) for ten weeks. Orthogonal projections to latent structures discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) on the serum NMR profiles and fatty acid composition (determined by GC/MS) showed a clear discrimination between HFS groups and controls. This discrimination involved metabolites such as glucose, amino acids, pyruvate, creatine, phosphocholine/glycerophosphocholine, ketone bodies and glycoproteins as well as an increase of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and a decrease of n-6 and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Although the administration of Curcuma longa did not prevent the observed increase of glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol and insulin levels, discriminating metabolites were observed between groups fed HFS alone or with addition of a Curcuma longa extract, namely some MUFA and n-3 PUFA, glycoproteins, glutamine, and methanol, suggesting that curcuminoids may act respectively on the fatty acid metabolism, the hexosamine biosynthesis pathway and alcohol oxidation. Curcuma longa extract supplementation appears to be beneficial in these metabolic pathways in rats. This metabolomic approach highlights important serum metabolites that could help in understanding further the metabolic mechanisms leading to IR.

In the framework of VIGOR Project, a national project coordinated by the Institute of Geosciences and Earth Resources (CNR-IGG) and sponsored by the Ministry of Economic Development (MiSE), dedicated to the evaluation of geothermal potential in the regions of the Convergence Objective in Italy (Puglia, Calabria, Campania and Sicily), is expected to evaluate the ability of the territory to heat exchange with the ground for air conditioning of buildings. To identify the conditions for the development of low enthalpy geothermal systems collected and organized on a regional scale geological and stratigraphic data useful for the preparation of a specific thematic mapping, able to represent in a synergistic and simplified way the physical parameters (geological, lithostratigraphic, hydrogeological, thermodynamic) that most influence the subsoil behavior for thermal exchange. The litho-stratigraphic and hydrogeological database created for every region led to the production of different cartographic thematic maps, such as the thermal conductivity (lithological and stratigraphical), the surface geothermal flux, the average annual temperature of air, the climate zoning, the areas of hydrogeological restrictions. To obtain a single representation of the geo-exchange potential of the region, the different thematic maps described must be combined together by means of an algorithm, defined on the basis of the SINTACS methodology. The purpose is to weigh the contributions of the involved parameters and to produce a preliminary synthesis map able to identify the territorial use of geothermal heat pump systems, based on the geological characteristics and in agreement with the existing regulatory constraints.

Aim: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a complex and long-lasting musculoskeletal disorder characterized by mood changes, fatigue, headache, and extensive musculoskeletal pain. Spirulina has potent antioxidant, antinociceptive, and neuroprotective properties. This study aimed to evaluate spirulina's capacity to protect rats against FM caused by reserpine. Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats received a subcutaneous injection of reserpine (1 mg/kg) once a day for three days. Subsequently, they were administered an oral dose of 400 mg/kg of Spirulina for 21 days. Many molecular, biochemical, and behavioral tests have been evaluated. Results: Daily spirulina consumption was able to limit the increase in neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and a reduction in biogenic amine levels as well as behavioral alterations. Significance: This study demonstrated for the first time that dietary integration with spirulina could be helpful to reduce the onset of pain, inflammation and mental disturbance in FM patients. • Less pain and disability after hand therapy with a dynamic stabilization approach • Clients with unilateral thumb pain improved more than those with bilateral pain • Persons in early radiographic stages had more functional gains than late stages • Persons with higher pain levels improved more than those with lower pain levels Retrospective case series. Literature trends indicate that thumb dynamic stabilization may benefit clients with thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) joint pain and arthritis. There is minimal research investigating whether client characteristics predict responsiveness to hand therapy for thumb dynamic stabilization. 1) To investigate how adults with thumb CMC joint pain responded to a hand therapy dynamic stabilization modeled intervention. 2) To determine if various client factors influenced responsiveness and to what extent. An electronic medical record search identified adults treated from August 2009 through December 2015 for thumb CMC joint pain. Radiographs were retrospectively staged. Outcome measures were 1) Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (QuickDASH) total disability score and 2) Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NPRS). Paired t- tests were performed to compare pre and post treatment measures. Multivariate analyses were used to investigate predictive factors. A total of 249 charts were analyzed. Large overall significant effects were noted for disability score (QuickDASH P <.001, X = 12.1, Cohen's d = 0.9). The average improvement of 2.1 (SD = 2.6) points exceeded the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) of 1.7 points on the NPRS pain scale. Significant predictors of QuickDASH Scores were radiographic staging, bilateral hand involvement and initial pain ratings. Significant predictors for change in pain scores (meeting or exceeding the minimal clinically important difference for the NPRS) were bilateral thumb involvement and initial "pain at worst" rating. After completing hand therapy with a dynamic stabilization approach, clients had less pain and disability. Those who had unilateral thumb pain, or those who started with higher pain levels were most likely to have clinically meaningful improvements in pain. Clients in early CMC osteoarthritis (OA) stages responded better than those in later stages, indicating that early referral to therapy is important. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
