We present the optical layout of soft X-rays compressors using reflective grating specifically designed to give both positive or negative group-delay dispersion (GDD). They are tailored for chirped-pulse-amplification experiments with FEL sources. The optical design originates from an existing compressor with plane gratings already realized and tested at FERMI, that has been demonstrated capable to introduce tunable negative GDD. Here, we discuss two novel designs for compressors using deformable gratings capable to give both negative and positive GDD. Two novel designs are discussed: 1) a design with two deformable gratings and an intermediate focus between the twos, that is demonstrated capable to introduce positive GDD; 2) a design with one deformable grating giving an intermediate focus, followed by a concave mirror and a plane grating, that is capable to give both positive and negative GDD depending on the distance between the second mirror and the second grating. Both the designs are tunable in wavelength and GDD, by acting on the deformable gratings, that are rotated to tune the wavelength and the GDD and deformed to introduce the radius required to keep the spectral focus. The deformable gratings have a laminar profile and are ruled on a thin silicon plane substrate. A piezoelectric actuator is glued on the back of the substrate and is actuated to give a radius of curvature that is varying from infinite (plane) to few meters. The ruling procedure, the piezoelectric actuator and the efficiency measurements in the soft X-rays will be presented. Some test cases are discussed for wavelengths shorter than 12 nm.

International audience; We show a practical implementation of a pulse characterization method for sub-cycle pulse measurements in the infrared spectral range based on spectral shearing interferometry. We employ spatially-encoded arrangement filter-based spectral phase interferometry for direct electric field reconstruction with external ancila pulses (X-SEA-F-SPIDER). We show merits and limitations of the setup and an in-depth comparison to another widely used temporal characterization technique-Second-Harmonic Generation Frequency Resolved Optical Gating (SHG-FROG). The X-SEA-F-SPIDER implementation presented in this paper allows measurement of sub-cycle pulses with over one octave wide spectrum spanning the 900-2400 nm range without adding any extra dispersion due to the pulse characterization apparatus.

We recently developed the tomographic ultrafast retrieval of transverse light E-fields (TURTLE) as a self-referenced method for retrieving vector-shaped ultrashort laser pulses. TURTLE combines three or more linear polarization projections of the pulse, which are measured with existing single-polarization pulse characterization techniques, to determine the full polarization state. We present in detail the two approaches for retrieving the full vector-shaped field: an analytic inversion and a parameter-fitting technique. By examining the impact of measurement noise on retrieval fidelity, we find that the fitting approach, which makes use of the additional redundancy inherent in some single-polarization measurements, is greatly superior to the analytic.

We demonstrate ultralow phase noise 10-GHz microwave signal generation from a free-running mode-locked Er-fiber laser with -142 and -157 dBc/Hz single-sideband absolute phase noise at 10- and 100-kHz offset frequencies, respectively. The absolute RMS timing jitter is 1.5 fs when integrated from 1-kHz to 5-GHz (Nyquist frequency) offset frequency. In the 10-kHz to 10-MHz integration bandwidth typically used for microwave generators, the RMS integrated jitter is 0.49 fs. The Er-fiber laser is operated in the stretched-pulse regime at close-to-zero dispersion to minimize the phase noise of extracted microwaves. In order to suppress the excess phase noise in the optical-to-electronic conversion process, we synchronize a low-noise voltage-controlled oscillator to the fiber laser using a fiber Sagnac-loop-based optical-microwave phase detector., 7 pages, 3 figures

We experimentally demonstrate a compact and efficient arrangement for fiber delivery of sub-30 fs energetic light pulses at 800 nm. Pulses coming from a broadband Ti:Sapphire oscillator are negatively pre-chirped by a grism-pair stretcher that allows for the control of second and third orders of dispersion. At the direct exit of a 2.7-m long large mode area (LMA) photonic crystal fiber 1-nJ pulses are temporally compressed to 29 fs producing close to 30 kW of peak power. The tunability of the device is studied. Comparison between LMA fibers and standard SMF fibers is also discussed. We describe a simple terahertz (THz) time domain spectrometer with a bandwidth extending up to 7.5 THz. We show that by keeping the generation and detection crystals close to each other a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) can be achieved without using lock-in detection and dry nitrogen flushing. The observed spectra show very good agreement with the spectra calculated based on a simple model which includes phase matching and absorption in the generation and detection crystals. Using this set-up we have measured the absorption lines in D-tartaric acid from 0.5 THz up to 7 THz. We show that the high frequency region > 3 THz is the better choice to measure small changes in the water content of a hygroscopic sample compared to the low frequency region.

We present 2D measurements of the full THz electric field behind a sample consisting of multiple slits in a metal foil. Our measurements, which have a sub-wavelength spatial, and a sub-period temporal resolution, reveal electric field lines, electric field vortices and saddle points. From our measurements we are able to reconstruct the magnetic field and, finally, the position and time-dependent Poynting vector which shows the flow of energy behind the sample. Our results show that it is possible to study the flow of light near sub-wavelength plasmonic structures such as slit-arrays and, by implication, other metamaterial samples.

We present measurements and calculations of the terahertz (THz) electric field measured in the near field of a metal tip used in THz apertureless near-field optical microscopy (THz-ANSOM). An analytical model in which we treat the metal tip as a linear wire antenna allows us to predict almost all of the features observed in the measurements, such as the relatively slow decay of the near-field amplitude when the tip-crystal separation increases. When the tip-crystal separation is modulated, in conjunction with lock-in detection at the modulation frequency, a smaller THz spot size is observed underneath the tip. A comparison with analytical expressions shows that in this case the electric field originates predominantly from the tip apex, with negligible contributions from the tip shaft. In the unmodulated case, the observed signal is the spatial integral of the electrooptic (EO) effect over the interaction length between the THz near field and the probe laser pulse. In the modulated case, to a good approximation, we find that the signal is proportional to the value of the THz near field at the surface of the EO crystal only.

Intense mid-infrared pulses tunable between 5 and 14 µm with pulse energies of several microjoules were generated by difference-frequency mixing (DFM) in a GaSe crystal. Longer wavelengths (up to 18 µm) were achieved by DFM in a CdSe crystal. The infrared pulses were then characterized using various techniques: The spectrum was measured using a Fourier-transform spectrometer, which was then modified to determine the interferometric second-order autocorrelation. The electric field spectral phase was measured using the same setup, thus leading to a full characterization of the mid-infrared pulses. The spectral phase was measured using the time-domain homodyne optical technique for spectral phase interferometry for direct electric field reconstruction, where spectral interferometry was replaced with time-domain interferometry. The measured pulse duration was 100 fs, nearly transform limited.

By assessing the cerebral blood volume and the hemoglobin oxygen saturation level, near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) probes brain oxygenation, which reflects cerebral activity. To develop a noninvasive method monitoring the brain of a songbird, we use an original NIRS device, i.e., a white laser coupled with an ultrafast spectrotemporal detector of optical signals without wavelength scanning. We perform in vivo measurements of the absorption coefficient and the reduced scattering coefficient of the caudal nidopallium area of the head of a songbird (the zebra finch).

International audience; Un dispositif de spectroscopie avec résolution du temps de vol des photons en milieu diffus a été développé. Celui-ci repose sur l utilisation d un continuum de lumière blanche généré par focalisation d un laser amplifié (830 nm, 1 kHz, 0.5 W, 170 fs) dans de l eau déminéralisée. Afin d optimiser spectralement et en puissance la source blanche sur la fenêtre spectrale 600-800 nm, une étude de la mise en forme spatio-temporelle avant autofocalisation de l impulsion laser par le milieu a été menée. Cette mise en forme est effectuée de manière spatiale en changeant la focale de la lentille de focalisation et de manière temporelle en changeant le taux de compression de l impulsion. L étude montre que le cône de lumière émise possède plus de puissance dans la fenêtre spectrale d intérêt pour des focales longues. Sur la fenêtre 600-800 nm, le rendement énergétique intégré varie de 5%, avec une focale f = 6 cm, à 15%, avec une focale f = 30 cm. La mise en forme temporelle montre des effets similaires avec les mêmes ordres de grandeur.

International audience; La spectroscopie résolue en temps utilisant un laser blanc femtoseconde est appliquée à la mesure in vivo des principaux absorbeurs du cerveau. Après génération adéquate du continuum de lumière blanche femtoseconde (50mW/[580-756nm] à 1 Hz), cette source se propage dans la calvaria, les méninges et le cortex chez le rat anesthésié. La transmission est étudiée sur 7mm de distance entre l impact laser et la fibre optique de collection. Le signal transmis est analysé dans la fenêtre 580-760nm, par un spectromètre couplé à une caméra à balayage de fente permettant la décorrélation de l absorption et de la diffusion.

International audience; Le transport du panache plasma créé par ablation laser femtoseconde d une cible de carbone est étudié par imagerie ultra-rapide. L énergie cinétique des particules émettrices ainsi détectées est voisine de 2 keV pour les plus rapides d entre elles (détectables pour des délais inférieurs à 100 ns après l impulsion laser), et de 100 eV pour la composante la plus lumineuse du panache plasma (détectable jusqu à 1 µs après l impulsion laser). Des couches minces de DLC ont également été élaborées par ablation laser femtoseconde. Le film obtenu à une fluence de 0.5 J/cm2 présente par exemple un taux d hybridation sp3 du carbone voisin de 55 %.

A novel method developed to increase the temporal resolution of x-ray streak cameras is described. The method is analogous to the time-correlated single-photon-counting technique, which is commonly used in atomic physics. By use of short-pulse x-ray radiation from a laser-produced plasma, generated by an ultrafast laser, it is shown that a standard x-ray streak camera with a nominal temporal resolution of \>5ps can yield a temporal response of 1.6 ps. The readout technique also removes temporal jitter with respect to the triggering laser. Capabilities and limitations of the technology are discussed.

International audience; Une nouvelle technique kilohertz de mesure de temps de vol picoseconde sur un large domaine spectral est détaillée. Le dispositif se compose d un laser femtoseconde avec amplification à dérive de fréquence et d une caméra à balayage de fente monocoup couplé a un polychromateur. Un continuum de lumière blanche est généré dans de l eau de manière à obtenir une source 450-750 nm la plus intense. Les images obtenues permettent une analyse spectrale et temporelle simultanée dont la résolution en temps de vol est inférieure à 5 mm pour un temps d intégration inférieur à 60 secondes

International audience; Nous présentons une instrumentation compacte, transportable, développé à l origine pour mesurer la fluorescence induite par laser du NADH cérébral chez l animal libre de ces mouvements. La source laser microchip Nd3+ : YAG est triplée en fréquence. Une fibre optique amène la lumière laser jusqu à la zone cible du cerveau et cette même fibre récupère la fluorescence de cette microzone (noyau du raphé dorsal). L acquisition de données se fait via un monochromateur suivi soit d un photomultiplicateur et d un Box-car soit d une caméra à balayage de fente. Les premières expériences réalisées sur un rat non anesthésié ou in vitro avec les deux systèmes d acquisition nous ont permis de vérifier que le niveau de fluorescence était suffisant pour être détecté. Les applications de ce capteur, développées actuellement, sont la détection des effets de certains médicaments au niveau du système nerveux central, l analyse des variations du NADH lors de l alternance des états de vigilance, ainsi qu une étude de l épilepsie.
