Abstract: In this survey, we propose an overview on Lyapunov functions for a variety of compartmental models in epidemiology. We exhibit the most widely employed functions, together with a commentary on their use. Our aim is to provide a comprehensive starting point to readers who are attempting to prove global stability of systems of ODEs. The focus is on mathematical epidemiology, however some of the functions and strategies presented in this paper can be adapted to a wider variety of models, such as prey-predator or rumor spreading., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: International audience; The reliability evaluation of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) executed on Graphic Processing Units (GPUs) is a challenging problem since the hardware architecture is highly complex and the software frameworks are composed of many layers of abstraction. While software-level fault injection is a common and fast way to evaluate the reliability of complex applications, it may produce unrealistic results since it has limited access to the hardware resources and the adopted fault models may be too naive (i.e., single and double bit flip). Contrarily, physical fault injection with neutron beam provides realistic error rates but lacks fault propagation visibility. This paper proposes a characterization of the DNN fault model combining both neutron beam experiments and fault injection at software level. We exposed GPUs running General Matrix Multiplication (GEMM) and DNNs to beam neutrons to measure their error rate. On DNNs, we observe that the percentage of critical errors can be up to 61%, and show that ECC is ineffective in reducing critical errors. We then performed a complementary software-level fault injection, using fault models derived from RTL simulations. Our results show that by injecting complex fault models, the YOLOv3 misdetection rate is validated to be very close to the rate measured with beam experiments, which is 8.66× higher than the one measured with fault injection using only single-bit flips.

Abstract: Two sites of the Neandertal-associated Middle Paleolithic of Iberia, dated to as early as approximately 50,000 years ago, yielded perforated and pigment-stained marine shells. At Cueva de los Aviones, three umbo-perforated valves of Acanthocardia and Glycymeris were found alongside lumps of yellow and red colorants, and residues preserved inside a Spondylus shell consist of a red lepidocrocite base mixed with ground, dark red-to-black fragments of hematite and pyrite. A perforated Pecten shell, painted on its external, white side with an orange mix of goethite and hematite, was abandoned after breakage at Cueva Antón, 60 km inland. Comparable early modern human-associated material from Africa and the Near East is widely accepted as evidence for body ornamentation, implying behavioral modernity. The Iberian finds show that European Neandertals were no different from coeval Africans in this regard, countering genetic/cognitive explanations for the emergence of symbolism and strengthening demographic/social ones.

Abstract: Special Issue: "Advanced Materials & Photonics Applications", publisher: SoftMotor Ltd (ISSN 1744-2400); International audience; Silica-hafnia is a reliable and flexible binary system that has proved to be suitable for rare earth doping and fabrication of amorphous and glass ceramic planar waveguides, as well as for improving thermal stability of spherical microresonators. Here we present a short overview on some rare earth - activated photonic structures fabricated by sol gel route. Fabrication protocols and structural, optical and spectroscopic assessment of the investigated systems are reported. In order to put in evidence the reliability and versatility of the silica-hafnia system for photonics applications, different examples of confined structures are discussed: i) SiO2 amorphous waveguides; ii) glass-ceramic waveguides fabricated by top-down and bottom-up approach; iii) coated spherical microresonators.

Abstract: Extended version of the paper to be published in IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters; International audience; One challenge of legged locomotion on uneven terrains is to deal with both the discrete problem of selecting a contact surface for each footstep and the continuous problem of placing each footstep on the selected surface. Consequently, footstep planning can be addressed with a Mixed Integer Program (MIP), an elegant but computationally-demanding method, which can make it unsuitable for online planning. We reformulate the MIP into a cardinality problem, then approximate it as a computationally efficient l1-norm minimisation, called SL1M. Moreover, we improve the performance and convergence of SL1M by combining it with a sampling-based root trajectory planner to prune irrelevant surface candidates. Our tests on the humanoid Talos in four representative scenarios show that SL1M always converges faster than MIP. For scenarios when the combinatorial complexity is small (< 10 surfaces per step), SL1M converges at least two times faster than MIP with no need for pruning. In more complex cases, SL1M converges up to 100 times faster than MIP with the help of pruning. Moreover, pruning can also improve the MIP computation time. The versatility of the framework is shown with additional tests on the quadruped robot ANYmal.

Abstract: This work is focused on sol-gel-derived SiO2-HfO2 and SiO2-SnO2 glass-ceramic waveguides activated by Er3+ and Eu3+ ions. We demonstrate that with optimized fabrication protocols it is possible to succeed in preparation of low-loss GCs waveguides activated by rare-earth ions opening new potentialities for the development of smart and cheap integrated optical circuits. Concerning sol-gel-derived Er3+-activated HfO2-based glass-ceramics the research activity has evidenced that: i) silica-hafnia glass ceramics allow to achieve an attenuation coefficient as low as 0.3 dB/cm at 1542 nm; ii) HfO2 crystalline phase can efficiently enhance the spectroscopic properties of the embedded Er3+ ions; iii) Er3+ ions remain incorporated in tetragonal HfO2 nanocrystals with dimensions of about 3-5 nm depending on the HfO2 content. From a technological point of view patterning of photonic structures on the silica-hafnia film requires photolithography followed by CHF3 reactive ion etching. A more simple approach consists in the exploitation of photorefractive properties. The inclusion of rare-earth elements, by allowing to combine photorefractive and active properties, may provide an effective route to the simple fabrication of integrated optics amplifiers and lasers. In this context we present SiO2-SnO2 glass-ceramic waveguides doped with Eu3+ ions with SnO2 content as high as 25 mol %. Formation and growth of nanocrystals in the parent amorphous waveguides was induced by heat treatment. The formation of tetragonal rutile SnO2 crystals in the films was confirmed by Raman spectra. Photoluminescence measurements indicate that most part of Eu3+ ions are embedded in SnO2 nanocrystals. The excitation spectra clearly evidence the role of interband electronic transition of SnO2 nanocrystals on the luminescence of Eu3+ ions. An attenuation coefficient a low as 0.8 ± 0.2 dB/cm at 632.8 nm was measured in the 75SiO2-25SnO2 glass-ceramic waveguide. Preliminary measurements on the effect of exposure to the UV excimer laser irradiation have shown a modulation of the refractive index of the parent waveguide, suitable to realize optical Bragg gratings in these materials.

Abstract: Publisher : John Wiley & Sons (ISSN 1862-6300); International audience; Fabrication, morphological and spectroscopic assessment of micro- and nano-spheres are reported. Spheres with size ranging from few hundreds of nm to few hundreds of μm have been prepared by different methods, i.e. sol–gel, melting and core-shell techniques. Pure and rare-earth-doped spheres find their major applications as micro-sensors and micro-lasers, respectively. We refer here to Erbium-activated systems only: (i) coated micro spheres where the silica core, obtained by telecom fibre melting, is coated with an Er3+–70SiO2–30HfO2 film; (ii) Er3+-activated micro-spheres obtained from silicate modified glasses and phosphate glasses using a plasma-torch; (iii) sol–gel Er3+-doped silica micro- and nano-spheres. The whispering gallery mode spectra were analysed as a function of sphere diameter, thickness of coating (if any) and Erbium content. Photoluminescence spectra of different systems gave interesting indications on the potential of some activated micro-spheres for lasing applications. For instance, sol–gel Er3+-activated core-shell-like structures exhibited a lifetime of 12.8 ms, leading to a quantum efficiency (QE) of 71%. Even higher QE (~76%) was estimated in sol–gel Er3+- silica spheres.

Since optical fiber innovation, a huge of activity has been performed leading to interesting results, such as optical waveguides and planar lightwave circuits, microphotonic devices, optical microcavities, nanowires, plasmonic structures, and photonic crystals. These systems have opened new possibilities in the field of both basic and applied physics, in a large area covering Information Communication Technologies, Health and Biology, Structural Engineering, and Environment Monitoring Systems. Several materials and techniques are employed to successfully fabricate photonic structures. Concerning materials, Er3+-activated silica-based glasses still play an important role, although recently interesting results have been published about fluoride glass-ceramic waveguides. As far as regards the fabrication methods sol-gel route and rf sputtering have proved to be versatile and reliable techniques. In this article we will present a review of some Er3+-activated photonic structures fabricated by sol gel route and rf sputtering deposition. In the discussion on the sol-gel approach we focus our attention on the silica-hafnia binary system presenting an overview concerning fabrication protocols and structural, optical and spectroscopic assessment of SiO2-HfO2 waveguides activated by Er3+ ions. In order to put in evidence the reliability and versatility of the sol-gel route for photonics applications four different confined structures are briefly presented: amorphous waveguides, coated microspheres, monolithic waveguide laser, and core-shell nanospheres. As examples of rf sputtering technique, we will discuss Er3+-activated silica-hafnia and silica-germania waveguides, the latter system allowing fabrication of integrated optics structures by UV photo-imprinting. Finally, two examples of photonic crystal structures, one prepared by sol-gel process and the other one fabricated by rf sputtering deposition, will be illustrated.

Abstract: Eu3+ doped (100-x) SiO2 - x SnO2 (x = 8, 16 and 25 mol %) glass-ceramic waveguides were fabricated by sol-gel technique with dip-coating processing at 800 °C. Higher thermal treatments led to the formation and growth of SnO2 nanocrystals in the matrix, enhancing the 5D0 → 7F2 emission of Eu3+. Spectroscopic investigations reveal the evolution of a centro-symmetric local environment around the Eu3+ ion. This property of glass-ceramic waveguides can be exploited for obtaining a higher rare-earth concentration in a smaller volume. The glass-ceramic waveguides exhibited low-losses (0.8 ± 0.2 dB/cm at 632.8 nm) and thus are promising for the development of high-gain integrated optical amplifiers

Abstract: It is well known that Lagrange interpolation based on equispaced nodes can yield poor results. Oscillations may appear when using high degree polynomials. For functions of one variable, the most celebrated example has been provided by Carl Runge in 1901, who showed that higher degrees do not always improve interpolation accuracy. His example was then extended to multivariate calculus and in this work we show that it is meaningful, in an appropriate sense, also for Whitney edge elements, namely for differential 1-forms.

Spheres with size ranging from few hundreds of nm to few hundreds of mm were prepared by different methods i.e. sol-gel, melting and core-shell techniques. The following systems are discussed: (i) coated micro and nanospheres where the silica core, obtained both by telecom fiber melting and by sol-gel, is coated with an Er3+-70SiO2-30HfO2 or an Er3+-SiO2 film, respectively; (ii) Er3+ and Er3+/Yb3+ -activated microspheres obtained by silicate-modified glasses and phosphate glasses using a plasma torch; (iii) Er3+ sol-gel derived silica spheres. The presented fabrication techniques are friendly methods leading to high quality surfaces of the spheres. When the spheres exhibit the suitable optical parameters also whispering gallery mode spectra were analysed as a function of sphere diameter, thickness of coating and erbium content. It is demonstrated that it is possible to select the radial order n tailoring the whispering gallery modes. The quasi-independent behaviour, observed for coated micro-spheres, and due to thermal effect linked to the injected pump, brings a major interest for lasing applications. Sol gel-derived core-shell-like Er3+-activated silica spheres was obtained by seeded growth. Typical photoluminescence spectrum of erbium, with a lifetime of 12.8 ms, was observed leading to a quantum efficiency of 71%. As far as concerns Er3+- sol-gel silica derived spherical spheres a quantum efficiency of 76% was estimated. Application of nanospheres to fabrication of specific photonic crystals structures will be also presented.

Abstract: The silica-hafnia glass system has proved to be highly suitable for photonic applications. The refractive index can be tailored in a wide range by appropriate composition, due to the high refractive index of HfO2. Moreover, its transparency is optimal in both visible and NIR range. Here we report on fabrication, morphological and spectroscopic assessment of Er3+-activated planar waveguides and glass ceramic waveguides. Results concerning silica microspheres coated by silica-hafnia film are presented as well. In the case of planar waveguides comparison with other binary systems, in particular SiO2-TiO2, is considered, and concentration quenching and energy transfer processes are discussed. Two examples of silicahafnia-derived waveguiding glass ceramics, prepared by top-down and bottom-up techniques are reported, and the main optical properties are discussed. Finally, some properties of activated microspherical resonators, having a silica core, obtained by melting the end of a telecom fiber, coated with an Er3+-doped 70SiO2-30HfO2 film, are presented.

Abstract: In this article, we examine the expectations of the economic outlook, fear of the future, and behavioural change during the first Covid-19 wave, for three European countries (Spain, the United Kingdom, and Italy) that have been severely hit. We use a novel dataset that we collected to monitor the three countries during the crisis. As outcome variables, we used expectations (e.g., economic outlook, labour market situation, recovery), fear (e.g., scenario of new outburst, economic depression, restriction to individual rights and freedom), and behavioural change across the following dimensions: savings, cultural consumption, social capital, and risky behaviour. We provide descriptive evidence that is representative of the population of interest, and we estimate the impact of exposure to shock occurred during the crisis on the same outcome variables, using matching techniques. Our main findings are the following: we detected systematically negative expectations regarding the future and the recovery, majoritarian fears of an economic depression, a new outbreak, and a permanent restriction on freedom, a reduction in saving and in social capital. Exposure to shocks decreased expected job prospects, increased withdrawal from accumulated savings, and reduced contacts with the network relevant to job advancement, whereas it had inconclusive effects over fears. Abstract: session 7 " Cristaux photoniques "; National audience; Nous présentons ici les détails d'un processus sol-gel utilisé pour synthétiser des sphères de silice, en portant une attention particulière aux conditions expérimentales permettant de contrôler leur taille. Nous avons élaboré un protocole dans le but d'obtenir des microsphères avec une faible dispersion, et démontré que de larges domaines cristallins ordonnés d'opale synthétique montrant une " stop band " peuvent être produits en quelques jours par déposition verticale et sédimentation assistée par évaporation. La microscopie électronique à balayage a été employée pour caractériser les échantillons. Des mesures de réflexion et transmission ont été effectuées pour mettre en évidence la haute qualité des opales réalisées.

Abstract: International audience; Since the discovery of optical fibers, the possibilityto develop optically confined structures has opened new possibilities for making Dovel optical components. Rare earth-activated confined structures at different scales thus offer interesting solutions for this end. A growing activity in this field is aimed at the development of optical amplifiers in planar form based on rare-earth-activated glasses to provide devices such as lossless splitters, which can fiod applications in the metropolitan and local area networks. A further development to enhance the spectroscopic properties is achieved by rare-earth co-activated nanocomposite materials, also in planar format. The aim of this paper is to give a review concerning the advances in glass-based photonic systems, where light confinement or the presence of nanostructured hosts for the rare-earth induces an enhancement and a control of the optical and/or spectroscopic properties.

Abstract: In this paper, the Cauchy problem for a Friedrichs system on a globally hyperbolic manifold with a timelike boundary is investigated. By imposing admissible boundary conditions, the existence and the uniqueness of strong solutions are shown. Furthermore, if the Friedrichs system is hyperbolic, the Cauchy problem is proved to be well-posed in the sense of Hadamard. Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we investigated the age distribution and dynamics of polyps in the slow-growing and long-lived gorgonian Corallium rubrum (the Mediterranean red coral), applying an a posteriori demographic approach by considering each colony as a population of polyps. In the Mediterranean red coral, new polyps emerge from the coenenchyme in different regions of the colony and their budding rate depends on the age of branches. The age of polyps, branches and colonies were estimated using the organic-matter-staining dating method on thin sections of the colony skeleton. The median age and maximum life span of polyps were 4 and 12 years suggesting the presence of senescence processes: thus a colony renews several times its polyps during life cycle. Polyps were divided into annual age classes, and their mortality rates calculated. The polyp age distribution was then used to construct a mortality table and an algebraic transition matrix based on the age at death of 234 polyps. Finally, the polyp budding rate of a young, unbranched colony was calculated, and polyp temporal dynamics simulated. These findings represent the first steps for developing demographic models able to describe polyp dynamics of old and highly branched colonies.

Abstract: With a continuous-time formulation of the multihop decomposition, we propose a distributed hybrid observer for a sensor network where the plant and local observers run in continuous time and the information exchange among the sensing nodes is sampled-data. Process disturbances, measurement noise and communication noise are considered, and we prove that under some necessary detectability assumptions the observer gains can be tuned to guarantee exponential ISS with a prescribeda convergence rate. Simulations illustrate the performance of the proposed observer.

Abstract: International audience; The complicated macroscopic decohesion and desorption phenomena of layers of soft materials (rubberlike, biological or bio-inspired) are the counterpart of complex and rich phenomena at the microscale: evolution of the natural configurations, insurgence and propagation of cracks, interaction and compatibility of the deformation of different layers. At the same time, adhesion plays an important role in growing of biological systems such as in tumour growth and focal adhesion. Based on minimal fully analytical models, we analyse the roles of temperature, elasticity and geometry in the decohesion process in several examples of interest in materials science and biological phenomena. We study the energetic competition between entropic energy terms, the elastic energy of the adhering layer and of the external device (AFM, interacting cell or proteins) regulating the decohesion phenomenon. We obtain the expressions of the strength, stiffness, decohesion energy and limit stretch as a function of microscale material properties evidencing the strong influence on ductility, toughness and force thresholds. We illustrate the effectiveness of the obtained models, by comparing the theoretical behaviour with the decohesion response of biological and bioinspired materials [1]. Moreover, we consider an extension of this class of models including also a damage mechanism, before decohesion, describing typical observations when connecting links (for instance, fibrils) can undergo a softening anticipating breaking. Abstract: Downy mildew caused by the oomycete Plasmopara viticola represents one of the most devastating diseases in vineyards. Current ways to control this disease rely mainly on fungicide applications, but agro-ecological concerns have raised interest in sustainable alternative methods. Certain rare sugars, like D-tagatose, have shown efficacy in reducing various plant diseases, including grapevine downy mildew. However, the mechanism of action of D-tagatose against grapevine downy mildew is not understood. The aim of this study was to characterize the efficacy and mechanism of action of a D-tagatose-based formulated product (IFP48) against grapevine downy mildew and compare it with the correspondent active molecule, pure D-tagatose (TAG). Whereas IFP48 root treatment provided scarce protection, the leaf treatment was the most efficient, especially at the dosage of 5 g/L. In particular, IFP48 treatment directly inhibited P. viticola sporangia germination, upregulated the expression of defense-related genes, and increased the content of stilbene phytoalexins. Conversely, the expression of defense-related genes and the content of stilbene phytoalexins were only slightly affected by TAG, suggesting that the formulation possibly improved D-tagatose effects against downy mildew in grapevine.

Abstract: Topological photonics seeks to control the behaviour of the light through the design of protected topological modes in photonic structures. While this approach originated from studying the behaviour of electrons in solid-state materials, it has since blossomed into a field that is at the very forefront of the search for new topological types of matter. This can have real implications for future technologies by harnessing the robustness of topological photonics for applications in photonics devices. This roadmap surveys some of the main emerging areas of research within topological photonics, with a special attention to questions in fundamental science, which photonics is in an ideal position to address. Abstract: We propose to extend results on the interpolation theory for scalar functions to the case of differential k-forms. More precisely, we consider the interpolation of fields in $${\mathcal P}^-_r \varLambda ^k(T)$$ P r - Λ k ( T ) , the finite element spaces of trimmed polynomial k-forms of arbitrary degree $$r \ge 1$$ r ≥ 1 , from their weights, namely their integrals on k-chains. These integrals have a clear physical interpretation, such as circulations along curves, fluxes across surfaces, densities in volumes, depending on the value of k. In this work, for $$k=1$$ k = 1 , we rely on the flexibility of the weights with respect to their geometrical support, to study different sets of 1-chains in T for a high order interpolation of differential 1-forms, constructed starting from “good” sets of nodes for a high order multi-variate polynomial representation of scalar fields, namely 0-forms. We analyse the growth of the generalized Lebesgue constant with the degree r and preliminary numerical results for edge elements support the nonuniform choice, in agreement with the well-known nodal case.

Abstract: International audience; The well-known tree-cotree gauging method for low-order edge finite elements is extended to high-order approximations within the first family of Nédélec finite element spaces. The key point in this method is the identification of degrees of freedom for edge and nodal finite element spaces such that the matrix of the gradient operator is the transposed of the all-node incidence matrix of a directed graph. This is straightforward for low-order finite elements and it can be proved that it is still possible in the high-order case using either moments or weights as degrees of freedom. In the case of weights, the geometrical realization of the graph associated with the gradient operator is very natural. We recall in details the definition of weights and present an algorithm for the construction of a spanning tree of this graph. The starting point of the algorithm is a spanning tree of the graph given by vertices and edges of the mesh (the so-called global spanning tree, that is the one used in the low-order case). This global step, interpreted in the high-order sense, is enriched locally, with a loop over the elements of the mesh, with arcs corresponding to edge, face and volume degrees of freedom required in the high-order case.

Abstract: This paper introduces Click to Move (C2M), a novel framework for video generation where the user can control the motion of the synthesized video through mouse clicks specifying simple object trajectories of the key objects in the scene. Our model receives as input an initial frame, its corresponding segmentation map and the sparse motion vectors encoding the input provided by the user. It outputs a plausible video sequence starting from the given frame and with a motion that is consistent with user input. Notably, our proposed deep architecture incorporates a Graph Convolution Network (GCN) modelling the movements of all the objects in the scene in a holistic manner and effectively combining the sparse user motion information and image features. Experimental results show that C2M outperforms existing methods on two publicly available datasets, thus demonstrating the effectiveness of our GCN framework at modelling object interactions. Abstract: A new fully automatic search–match procedure based on a Rietveld full-pattern-fitting method is presented. The method does not rely on peak positions and permits not only phase identification but also a quantification of the phases and their gross microstructural features., A new search–match procedure has been developed and tested which, in contrast to previously existing methods, does not use a set of lines identified from a diffraction pattern, but an optimized Rietveld fitting on the raw data. Modern computers with multicore processors allow the routine to be fast enough to perform the entire search in a reasonable time using quite large databases of crystal structures. The search–match is done using the crystal structures for all phases and the instrumental geometry, and as such can be applied to every kind of diffraction experiment, including X-rays, thermal/time-of-flight neutrons and electrons. The methodology can also be applied to nanocrystalline samples for which peak identification may be a problem. A web interface has been developed to permit easy testing and evaluation of the procedure. The quality of the results mainly depends on the availability of the sought phase in the structure database. The method permits not only phase identification but also a rapid quantification of the phases and their gross microstructural features, provided the instrumental function is known.

Abstract: Transactive Memory System (TMS) is a mental representation of the distribution of knowledge between the members of a team. Can an Embodied Conversational Agent perform as well as a Human when intervening as a leader to support the development of the team’s TMS? And, if yes, are there differences in the way the team perceives their respective interventions? In this paper, a perceptive online study is conducted on how Human leader interventions affect the perception of a team’s TMS. The results are compared to the ones from a previous study evaluating an Embodied Conversational agent leader rather than a human one. Both the agent and the human adopt nonverbal behaviors characterizing 2 leadership styles: Transformational (TFL) and Transactional (TAL). TFL is expected to stimulate team members curiosity and creativity in problem-solving; instead, TAL emphasizes the role of the leader in supervising the team, providing it with feedback when needed. The results show that the intervention from both the agent and the human are perceived to potentially improve the perceived TMS of a team. Another interesting insight is that the TFL style works better when performed by the Human, where both the TAL and TFL style perform well when realized by the agent.

Abstract: d-tagatose is a rare monosaccharide, naturally present at low concentrations in some fruits and dairy products.d-tagatose is "generally recognized as safe" and is used as a low-calorie sweetener in the food industry.It is able to inhibit the growth of numerous microorganisms, such as phytopathogenic oomycetes responsible for important crop diseases. Thanks to the negligible effects on human health and the environment,d-tagatose has been proposed as a sustainable product for crop protection. This review describes the current knowledge on modes of action ofd-tagatose against phytopathogenic oomycetes and its potential uses in agriculture.d-tagatose can negatively affect the growth of phytopathogenic oomycetes by inhibiting key enzymes of sugar metabolism, such as β-glucosidase inPhytophthora infestans, and fructokinase and phosphomannose isomerase inHyaloperonospora arabidopsidis. Moreover,d-tagatose affects sugar content, causes severe mitochondrial alterations, and inhibits respiration processes with the accumulation of reactive oxygen species inP.infestans, but not inP.cinnamomi. Differential effects ofd-tagatose are associated with a global gene downregulation inP.infestansand with an efficient transcriptional reprogramming of multiple metabolic processes inP.cinnamomi.d-tagatose displays possible species-specific effects inPhytophthoraspp. and nutritional properties on some plant-associated microorganisms. However, inhibitory effects are reversible andP.infestansgrowth can be restored in the absence ofd-tagatose. Further functional studies are discussed in this review, in order to promote the use ofd-tagatose for sustainable crop protection.

Abstract: International audience; Albert Costa was a dear friend and colleague who died young but accomplished much. We provide a brief sketch of his scientific contributions to the field of psycholinguistics and bilingualism. The articles included in the special issue are then presented along three research topics developed by Albert Costa in his own career: Lexical access in bilingualism, executive control in bilingualism, and judgement and decision making in a foreign language. The articles explore topics such as competition within and across words in unimodal or bimodal bilinguals, and its links to domain-general executive control, the reshaping of word form knowledge following second language learning, the stakes and methods involved in investigating accented speech, and the contrast between decision making in the native or second language. We hope this collection provides an up-to-date perspective on the rich field of bilingualism research, and a modest homage to our late friend and colleague.

Abstract: L’équipe LIS du laboratoire ICAR de Lyon s’est engagée depuis plusieurs années dans la conception de ressources pour l’enseignement du français oral et de la linguistique française à partir de ses corpus et de ses travaux de recherche. En concertation avec un réseau d’enseignants et de didacticiens, elle a construit l’application CLAPI-FLE proposant une quarantaine d’extraits décrits, transcrits et didactisés issus de situations ordinaires du quotidien, ainsi que des collections et des fiches explicatives pour documenter les fonctions pragmatiques et les procédés mis en œuvre par les locuteurs. De nombreux types d’interactions y sont représentés : des conversations privées pendant des repas ou des sessions de jeux, des achats dans des petits commerces, des réunions de travail, des consultations médicales, des appels téléphoniques, etc. Cet article montre de quelle manière les ressources de CLAPI-FLE permettent de sensibiliser les apprenants aux différentes composantes d’une interaction orale pour que la compréhension de son organisation et l’acquisition de stratégies de communication soient facilitées. The LIS (Language and Social Interaction) team of the ICAR Research Lab in Lyon has been involved for several years in the design of resources for the teaching of spoken French and French linguistics on the basis of its corpora and research work. In collaboration with a network of language and learning specialists and teachers, it has developed the CLAPI-FLE platform, which offers about forty extracts described, transcribed and didactically designed from everyday situations, as well as collections and explanatory sheets to document the pragmatic functions and processes used by speakers. Several types of interactions are illustrated: ordinary conversations during mealtimes or game sessions, service encounters in small shops, work meetings, medical consultations, phone calls, etc. This article shows how CLAPI-FLE’s resources make it possible to raise learners’ awareness of the various components of oral interactions in order to facilitate the understanding of their organization and the acquisition of communication strategies.

Abstract: Tagatose is a rare sugar with no negative impacts on human health and selective inhibitory effects on plant-associated microorganisms. Tagatose inhibited mycelial growth and negatively affected mitochondrial processes in Phytophthora infestans, but not in Phytophthora cinnamomi. The aim of this study was to elucidate metabolic changes and transcriptional reprogramming activated by P. infestans and P. cinnamomi in response to tagatose, in order to clarify the differential inhibitory mechanisms of tagatose and the species-specific reactions to this rare sugar. Phytophthora infestans and P. cinnamomi activated distinct metabolic and transcriptional changes in response to the rare sugar. Tagatose negatively affected mycelial growth, sugar content and amino acid content in P. infestans with a severe transcriptional reprogramming that included the downregulation of genes involved in transport, sugar metabolism, signal transduction, and growth-related process. Conversely, tagatose incubation upregulated genes related to transport, energy metabolism, sugar metabolism and oxidative stress in P. cinnamomi with no negative effects on mycelial growth, sugar content and amino acid content. Differential inhibitory effects of tagatose on Phytophthora spp. were associated with an attempted reaction of P. infestans, which was not sufficient to attenuate the negative impacts of the rare sugar and with an efficient response of P. cinnamomi with the reprogramming of multiple metabolic processes, such as genes related to glucose transport, pentose metabolism, tricarboxylic acid cycle, reactive oxygen species detoxification, mitochondrial and alternative respiration processes. Knowledge on the differential response of Phytophthora spp. to tagatose represent a step forward in the understanding functional roles of rare sugars.

Abstract: We propose new sets of degrees of freedom, called weights, for the interpolation of a differential k-form in Whitney finite elements of arbitrary polynomial degree on simplices. They have a clear physical interpretation as integrals of the k-form on k-chains. This allows to consider quite general distributions of the supports, that are k-subsimplices not necessarily uniform, in a way here defined. We exploit this flexibility to investigate distributions that minimize the growth of the generalized Lebesgue constant when the polynomial degree increases. Abstract: IHM’20.21 32e conférence francophone sur l’Interaction Humain-Machine; National audience; Teams working together at solving a problem can benefit from a technological support for developing a shared mental representation of their own knowledge. In this paper, we investigate, through an online perceptive study, how people perceive the interventions of an Embodied Conversational Agent (ECA) designed to help a team to develop its Transactive Memory System (TMS), that is a mental representation of the distribution of knowledge between the team members. The ECA acted two different leadership styles: the Transformational and the Transactional style, respectively. Results show in some cases that both leadership styles were perceived to increase the TMS of the team, without significant differences between the two. This work will be extended, in the future, by evaluating other types of interventions (e.g. human- and message-based), and it is a first step towards our research goal of developing an effective team-assisting agent.; Des équipes plongées dans une tâche de résolution de problèmes pourraient bénéficier de soutien afin de développer de bonnes représentations mentales de leurs connaissances qui faciliteraient leur travail. Dans cet article, nous initions le travail de conception d’un agent conversationnel animé jouant le rôle de leader et capable d’aider une équipe à développer son système de mémoire transactive (SMT). Nous avons mené une étude de la littérature afin d’identifier des styles de leaderships et de comportements que notre leader virtuel pourrait utiliser et nous avons mené une première étude en ligne sur la perception qu’ont nos participants de l’influence de ces comportements sur l’évolution du SMT d’une équipe en activité. Nos résultats suggèrent un effet positif des deux styles employés par l’agent sur la perception du SMT des équipes, sans différence majeure entre les deux. Dans le futur, nous prévoyons de comparer avec d’autres types d’interventions (message et leader humain) afin de continuer notre travail de conception d’un agent aidant.

Abstract: Convolutional neural networks have enabled major progresses in addressing pixel-level prediction tasks such as semantic segmentation, depth estimation, surface normal prediction and so on, benefiting from their powerful capabilities in visual representation learning. Typically, state of the art models integrate attention mechanisms for improved deep feature representations. Recently, some works have demonstrated the significance of learning and combining both spatial- and channelwise attentions for deep feature refinement. In this paper, weaim at effectively boosting previous approaches and propose a unified deep framework to jointly learn both spatial attention maps and channel attention vectors in a principled manner so as to structure the resulting attention tensors and model interactions between these two types of attentions. Specifically, we integrate the estimation and the interaction of the attentions within a probabilistic representation learning framework, leading to VarIational STructured Attention networks (VISTA-Net). We implement the inference rules within the neural network, thus allowing for end-to-end learning of the probabilistic and the CNN frontend parameters. As demonstrated by our extensive empirical evaluation on six large-scale datasets for dense visual prediction, VISTA-Net outperforms the state-of-the-art in multiple continuous and discrete prediction tasks, thus confirming the benefit of the proposed approach in joint structured spatial-channel attention estimation for deep representation learning. Abstract: We investigate the position- and momentum-space two--body correlations in a weakly interacting, harmonically trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensed gas at low temperatures. The two-body correlations are computed within the Bogoliubov approximation and the peculiarities of the trapped gas are highlighted in contrast to the spatially homogeneous case. In the position space, we recover the anti-bunching induced by the repulsive inter-atomic interaction in the condensed fraction localized around the trap center and the bunching in the outer thermal cloud. In the momentum space, bunching signatures appear for either equal or opposite values of the momentum and display peculiar features as a function of the momentum and the temperature. In analogy to the optical Hanbury Brown and Twiss effect, the amplitude of the bunching signal at close-by momenta is fixed by the chaotic nature of the matter field state and its linewidth is shown to be set by the (inverse of the) finite spatial size of the associated in-trap momentum components. In contrast, the linewidth of the bunching signal at opposite-momenta is only determined by the condensate size., 13 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: Nature Communications 12(1), 598 (1-7) (2021). doi:10.1038/s41467-020-20829-2, Understanding of charge-density wave (CDW) phases is a main challenge in condensed matter due to their presence in high-Tc superconductors or transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Among TMDs, the origin of the CDW in VSe$_2$ remains highly debated. Here, by means of inelastic x-ray scattering and first-principles calculations, we show that the CDW transition is driven by the collapse at 110 K of an acoustic mode at q$_{CDW}$ = (2.25 0 0.7) r.l.u. The softening starts below 225 K and expands over a wide region of the Brillouin zone, identifying the electron-phonon interaction as the driving force of the CDW. This is supported by our calculations that determine a large momentum-dependence of the electron-phonon matrix-elements that peak at the CDW wave vector. Our first-principles anharmonic calculations reproduce the temperature dependence of the soft mode and the T$_{CDW}$ onset only when considering the out-of-plane van der Waals interactions, which reveal crucial for the melting of the CDW phase., Published by Nature Publishing Group UK, [London]

Abstract: Experimental and theoretical studies are presented on the reactivity of the radical cation isomers methanimine and aminomethylene with ethyne. Selective isomer generation is performed via dissociative photoionization of suitable neutral precursors and via direct photoionization of methanimine. Reactive cross sections and product branching ratios are measured as a function of photon and collision energies. Results are discussed in light of ab initio calculations of reaction mechanisms. The major channels, for both isomers, are due to H atom elimination from covalently bound adducts to give [C3NH4]+. Theoretical calculations show that while for the reaction of aminomethylene with acetylene any of the three lowest energy [C3NH4]+ isomers can form via barrierless and exothermic pathways, for the methanimine reagent the only barrierless pathway is the one leading to the production of protonated vinyl cyanide (CH2CHCNH+), a prototypical branched nitrile species that has been proposed as a likely intermediate in star forming regions and in the atmosphere of Titan.
