Abstract

The hybridized system including the nuclear-emulsion target and the magnetic Omega Prime spectrometer is described. The set-up was used in a CERN experiment for the measurement of lifetimes of charmed particles produced by tagged photons from the bremsstrahlung beam. The emulsion served simultaneously as a target and as a high-spatial-resolution vertex detector in order to recognize decay vertices and measure decay distances of charmed particles. In order to avoid the blackening of the emulsion due to electromagnetic interactions the targets were delivered into the beam position one at a time and removed automatically after suitable dosage. The Omega Prime spectrometer allowed the determination of the parameters of the secondary particles and the reconstruction of the interaction points in the emulsion with a high precision. The method used was very successful in finding photohadronic events and in separating a practically background free subsample with the production of pairs of charmed particles decaying inside the emulsion.

Abstract

The lifetimes of charmed hadrons photoproduced in nuclear emulsion have been computed from a practically background-free sample of 44 neutral particle decays and 42 charged-particle decays including 27D±, 11Λc+, 1Ds+ and 3 ambiguous decays. The values obtained are τ(D0, bar D0) = (3.6-0.8+1.2 ± 0.7) 10-13 s, τ(D±) = (5.0-1.0+1.5 ± 1.9) 10-13 s, τ(Λc+) = = (2.3-0.6+0.9 ± 0.4) 10-13 s. Branching ratios of various decay topologies were also obtained.

Abstract

An investigation of the energy dependence of grey prong producing particles in 16 O+ emulsion interactions at energies from 2.1 to 200 A GeV is reported. Many of the features of these particles, known from hadron-induced interactions, are shown to be of importance also in heavy-ion interactions, i.e. multiplicity and angular distributions as well as the impact parameter dependence are energy independent. Furthermore the angular distribution seems to be independent of the projectile and target masses as well as centrality of the interactions. Both the Fritiof and Ranft models fail to reproduce this general angular shape.

Abstract

Pseudorapidity distributions of relativistic singly charged particles in oxygen-induced emulsion interactions at 14.6, 60, and 200 GeV/nucleon are studied. Limiting fragmentation behavior is observed in both the target and projectile fragmentation regions for a central as well as for a minimum-bias sample. Comparisons with the fritiof model reveal that the picture of fragmenting strings successfully describes the observed data.

Abstract

We report some results on charm photoproduction at γ energies ranging from 20 to 70 GeV. 36 events with pairs of charmed particles have been found in emulsions. The computed total cross section is (230±57)nb/nucleon. Frequencies of different production channels and some distributions are presented and compared with the predictions from a photon-gluon fusion model with string fragmentation.

Abstract

Fluctuations in particle densities of non-statistical origin are studied in central 16 O+Ag(Br) and 32 S+Au interactions at 200 A GeV. Non-statistical fluctuations in the 32 S-induced interactions seem to enhance the local particle densities, and suggest the presence of intermittancy. The fluctuations are found to be accompanied by a clustering tendency also in the azimuthal plane. A new method for the study of azimuthal correlations is proposed.

Abstract

Among the physical processes which involve strongly interacting particles — pions and nucleons — one of the most accessible to experimental investigation is the photoproduction of pions on nucleons. Hence, the results of an experimental investigation of pion photoproduction provide an important measure of the correctness of attempts to create a theory of strong interactions.

Abstract

Angular distributions of charged particles produced in 16O and 32S collisions with nuclear track emulsion were studied at momenta 4.5 and 200 A GeV/c. Comparison with the angular distributions of charged particles produced in proton-nucleus collisions at the same momentum allows to draw the conclusion, that the angular distributions in nucleus-nucleus collisions can be seen as superposition of the angular distributions in nucleon-nucleus collisions taken at the same impact parameter bNA, that is mean impact parameter between the participating projectile nucleons and the center of the target nucleus

Abstract

Using emulsion detectors a transverse-momentum analysis of projectile fragments has been performed in Au induced nuclear interactions at 11.6 A GeV/c. Evidence for collective flow of the projectile fragments has been obtained. Angular distributions of the principal vectors of projectile and target fragments have shown strong azimuthal correlation.

Abstract

Angular distributions of projectile-associated He fragments from Pb induced reactions on stationary Pb target at 158 A GeV/c incident momentum are reported. The precision of the angular measurements was about ±0.01 mrad. Two emission components are appearing in the projected angular spectra of the He particles, one representing fragmentation at Fermi momentum scale, while the other one exhibits large transverse momentum transfer. By scaling with the incident momentum the angular spectra of He particles are compared with earlier reported measurements of Au on Au interactions at 11.6 A GeV/c. The p T spectrum of the He particles appears the same for the two cases.
