Transition metal carbides, particularly tungsten carbide, are rather attractive due to their physical and mechanical properties [1]. They are characterized by the high melting point, unusual hardness, low friction coefficient, chemical inertness, oxidation resistance, and excellent electric conductivity. Nowadays, highly dispersed tungsten carbide powders appear to be very important for production of wear-resistant parts, cutters, non-iron alloys, etc.

With a certain selection of phases, composite ceramic materials become insensitive to stress concentration and crack formation and propagation, and resist alternating and prolonged loads well. A knowledge of the behavior of each component phase of the composition and of their interplay permits the production of materials with preset mechanical properties, such as strength, rigidity, heat resistance, and chemical stability.

A new title modification of B25C4Mg1.42 was prepared by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis and characterized by single crystal XRD analysis.
