The yearly energy requirements of normal conducting (NC) and superconducting (SC) magnet options of a new hadron therapy (HT) facility are compared. Special reference is made to the layouts considered for the proposed SEEIIST facility. Benchmarking with the NC CNAO HT centre in Pavia (Italy) was carried out. The energy comparison is centred on the different synchrotron solutions, assuming the same injector and lines in the designs. The beam current is more than a factor 10 higher with respect to present generation facilities. This allows efficient ’multi-energy extraction’ (MEE), which shortens the therapy treatment and is needed especially in the SC option, because of the slow magnet ramping time. Hence, power values of the facility in the traditional mode were converted into MEE ones, for the sake of a fair stepwise comparison between NC and SC magnets. The use of cryocoolers and a liquefier are also compared, for synchrotron refrigeration. This study shows that a NC facility operated in MEE mode requires the least average energy, followed by the SC synchrotron solution with a liquefier, while the most energy intensive solution is the SC one with cryocoolers., Proceedings of the 13th International Particle Accelerator Conference, IPAC2022, Bangkok, Thailand

El uso mediado de la tecnología fomenta el aprendizaje desde la infancia y representa un potencial recurso para la educación inclusiva. Al mismo tiempo, la creciente exposición a contenidos digitales interactivos, a menudo conectados a la red, conlleva una serie de riesgos para los niños. A las estrategias actualmente empleadas para protegerlos, que se limitan a reducir su exposición a contenidos perjudiciales, parece subyacer una definición de protección inadecuada. Esta investigación propone que se amplíe esta definición. A través de una observación sistemática de 200 apps para menores de ocho años en el ámbito catalán y un análisis de componentes principales, se propone una definición multidimensional de protección que no se limita a detallar los riesgos potenciales, sino que también considera aspectos relacionados con el potencial educativo e inclusivo de los recursos digitales. Se sugieren cinco factores a considerar para seleccionar estos recursos y contribuir a la competencia digital de docentes y alumnos. El primer factor concierne al uso de mecanismos de protección y la existencia de interferencias externas; el segundo factor indica la presencia de herramientas de adaptación; la exposición a estereotipos corresponde al tercer factor y los últimos dos consideran los conocimientos previos requeridos y el componente verbal de las apps. Finalmente se discute el alcance de la definición propuesta y sus limitaciones para guiar análisis futuros The mediated use of technology fosters learning from early childhood and is a potential resource for inclusive education. Nevertheless, the huge range of options and exposure to interactive digital content, which is often online, also implies a series of risks. The definition of protection underlying the current strategies to protect children is inadequate as it only extends to reducing children’s exposure to harmful content. This study proposes the expansion of this definition. Through systematic observation of 200 apps within the Catalan sphere for children under 8 years of age and principal component analysis, the results support a multidimensional conceptualisation of protection which, instead of being restricted to the potential risks, also considers aspects related to the educational and inclusive potential of digital resources. Five factors are suggested in order to select these resources and contribute to the digital competence of teachers and students. The first factor concerns the use of protection mechanisms and the existence of external interference, the second factor indicates the presence of adaptation tools; the exposure to stereotypes corresponds to the third factor and the last two consider the previous knowledge required and the verbal component of the apps. Finally, the scope of the suggested definition and its limitations as a guide for future analysis will be discussed

In the context of the Future Circular Collider hadron-hadron (FCC-hh) R program, the Italian Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN), in collaboration with CERN, is responsible for designing and constructing the Falcon Dipole (Future Accelerator post-LHC Costheta Optimized Nb₃Sn Dipole), which is an important step towards the construction of High Field Nb₃Sn magnets for a post LHC collider. The magnet is a short model with one aperture of 50 mm and the target bore field is 12 T (14 T ’ultimate’ field). The dipole is pre-loaded with the Bladder technique to minimize the stress on the coils at room temperature, which are prone to degradation because of the Nb₃Sn cable strain-sensitivity. The electro-mechanical 2D design is focused on the performance, the field quality and the quench protection, with emphasis to the stresses on the the conductor. This paper evaluates the application of photogrammetric recording to seismically-affected archaeological sites from the moment of on-site data acquisition through to the analysis of the resulting 3D model. This methodology facilitates (i) rapid but accurate recording of seismically-damaged archaeological contexts, (ii) three-dimensional reconstructions, (iii) the documentation of archeological features (e.g. plans, sections, elevations), and (iv) the extraction of additional information and data for archaeoseismological analysis (DEMs, for instance). Not only is greater detail observed using these methods but it can also be quantified at a distance from the target site, thereby extending the researcher’s time in the field. 3D photogrammetry and modelling also reduce the risk that small but significant features such as seismic fractures and deformations are overlooked. This paper draws on evidence from two case studies of the EU-funded ArMedEa project (Archaeology of Medieval Earthquakes in Europe, 1000-1550 AD), namely the Islamic fortified village of El Castillejo (Guajar Faragüit, Granada, Spain) and the crusader castle of Saranda Kolones (Paphos, Cyprus).

Las investigaciones en campo internacional indican que 4 de cada 5 ciudadanos europeos piden más acción contra la delincuencia y el terrorismo (De Wever, 2011), a pesar de que las estadísticas más recientes apuntan a la diminución del numero de delitos (Clarke, 2013). También en Barcelona, los datos muestran la existencia de un desajuste entre crimen y percepción puesto que, si bien los datos policiales registran una tendencia hacia la disminución de la delincuencia, la gente se siente más insegura. Sobre la base de un análisis en profundidad de la literatura es posible constatar que la inseguridad se considera hoy en día un fenómeno subjetivo que depende solo parcialmente del delito. Con el objetivo de establecer un marco interpretativo susceptible de estudiar el fenómeno de la inseguridad más allá de su dimensión delictiva, la investigación se ha enfocado en tres dimensiones distintas: * la inseguridad objetiva (vinculada a la evolución de las tasas de criminalidad), * la inseguridad subjetiva (o percepción de inseguridad), y * la inseguridad social (cuya definición depende de una serie de factores de vulnerabilidad susceptibles de tener un impacto en la valoración de la seguridad). Este planteamiento implicó el desarrollo de una metodología basada en un diseño cuantitativo secuencial estructurado en torno a tres objetivos: * Realizar una "agregación inteligente" de datos sobre el crimen (Hunt, Kilmer & Rubin, 2010) que permita recuperar información no sólo acerca de los problemas relacionados con la delincuencia sino también tomando en consideración datos de carácter contextual como, por ejemplo, las características demográficas y socio-­‐económicas del contexto del estudio; * Elaborar un marco conceptual capaz de analizar la relación entre las tres dimensiones constitutivas de la inseguridad y su implicación para un estudio en el contexto de Barcelona; * Analizar la relación entre la inseguridad y la afiliación social y profundizar en el conocimiento acerca del impacto de la inseguridad sobre diferentes grupos demográficos. En primer lugar, se creó una base de datos en la que se registró la información sobre crimen (inseguridad objetiva) y percepción de inseguridad (inseguridad subjetiva). En concreto se analizaron, por un lado, las fuentes oficiales de los cuerpos de policía locales (Mossos d’Esquadra y Guardia Urbana) y, por otro lado, las encuestas de victimización desarrolladas por el Departamento de Interior de la Generalitat de Catalunya. Los resultados del análisis de los datos secundarios señalaron, como mencionado, que dimensión objetiva y dimensión subjetiva no coinciden en Barcelona. En segundo lugar, se procedió a la operacionalización del concepto de inseguridad social para poder analizar los factores de vulnerabilidad socioeconómica que afectan a los ciudadanos de Barcelona y su impacto sobre la percepción de inseguridad. Los resultados del análisis estadístico descriptivo señalaron que los tres barrios con mayor presencia de factores de inseguridad social en Barcelona son: la Trinitat Nova, el Besòs i el Maresme y Ciutat Meridiana. Finalmente, se procedió al diseño y la implementación de una encuesta con el objetivo de analizar la relación entre la inseguridad y la afiliación social. La encuesta se llevó a cabo en 11 barrios de la ciudad de Barcelona sobre una muestra estructurada de 185 sujetos. El análisis estadístico descriptivo e inferencial permitió confirmar las hipótesis planteadas en la fase de diseño: haber sido víctima de un delito afecta negativamente la percepción de seguridad y la percepción del entorno (H1); los niveles de inseguridad difieren significativamente entre grupos sociales (H2) y, en concreto, las mujeres, las personas mayores de 65 años y los sujetos con niveles de estudios deficitarios, experimentan niveles de inseguridad proporcionalmente mayores comparados con el resto de la muestra; los factores de exclusión social ofrecen una explicación de las variaciones en la percepción de inseguridad, sobre todo en un contexto como el de la capital catalana donde se registran bajos índices delictivos (H3)., When the economic recession began in 2008, there was expectation among public authorities and scholars that crime would increase. Up-­‐to-­‐date criminological sources show that this has clearly not happened. Concerning Barcelona, when comparing police recorded crime statistics and victimization data, a paradox arises since available data outline a scenario where, despite a decreasing trend in crime, people feel more insecure. The correspondence between perceptions and reality is frequently imperfect given that insecurity may be affected by several factors (i.e. individual factors, mass media, personal experiences with crime and other individual and/or contextual factors). This heterogeneity may explain why, despite victimization being a relatively infrequent event in Barcelona, so many people are concerned about crime-­‐related issues. Assuming that fear of crime and perceived insecurity are clearly different topics, the research offers a quantitative analysis enabling a comprehensive understanding of crime-­‐related issues while considering contextual factors. With this in mind, the research addresses four key dimensions of insecurity: * The objective dimension focused on actual crime spread; * The subjective dimension related to cognitive aspects such as fear of crime or perceived risks; * The socio-­‐geographic dimension referring to neighbourhood characteristics that have effects on the perception of insecurity; * The socio-­‐economic dimension referring to the social consequences of poverty and deprived living conditions on ontological security. In order to explore the significance of the mismatch between crime and perceived insecurity, a survey (n=185) was designed to enable a more comprehensive assessment of insecurity in the context of Barcelona. The specific objective was to test the hypothesis of radical theories on fear of crime, that is to say that insecurity is mainly social and economic insecurity in disguise. Consistent with previous research, the statistical analysis showed that insecurity perception has an unequal impact on social groups. Being a woman, an older person, unemployed, or having a low level of education is associated with highest levels of insecurity. Furthermore, results show that the highest levels of fear emerge in neighbourhoods with a huge presence of residents at risk of poverty and social exclusion. Therefore, social insecurity seems to be a clear multiplier of perceived insecurity in Barcelona.
