Processes of social inclusion and exclusion among internal migrants in Antwerp, Rotterdam and Stockholm in the period 1850-1930 are studied with the help of data on partner choice and marriage of migrants who moved to these cities as singles. In practice, four outcomes related to meeting and mating are linked in our conceptual model to four acculturation trajectories, which form together a sliding scale in terms of social in- and exclusion. The models were tested by means of logistic regression. The results show that in all three cities social exclusion was a widespread phenomenon, and that only a small minority of the migrants became fully incorporated into urban mainstream society. Social exclusion was highly related to cultural differences between migrants and natives. Economic capital did not reduce the migrants’ risk of facing marginali-zation, but it did facilitate the crossing of group boundaries for a specific group of migrants who were able to escape marginalization. Although there is an extensive field dedicated to the study of ethnic residential segregation, few scholars investigate the importance of household characteristics for understanding this segregation. Considering the White Flight hypothesis as a special case of the Residential Stress theory, we investigate whether there is a link between the presence of four different house hold types ethnic concentration and segregation. We therefore perform two analyses using the 2001 Census of Belgium: a binary logistic multilevel analysis investigating the chance that a neighbourhood is ethnically concentrated (i.e. has a location quotient higher than 1) and a single level linear regression analysis investigating the dissimilarity score of a city. We find that neighbourhoods with a large share ethnic majority single households and lone parents have a higher chance to be concentrated than neighbourhoods with a lower share of either household type. The same can be said for the percentage cohabitating, childless couples before adding control variables. The percentage families with young children has an inverse relation with neighbourhood concentration before adding control variables. Cities with a higher share families with young children are more segregated than cities with a lower share families with young children. Cities with a high share single households and lone parents, on the other hand, are less segregated than cities with a low share single households or lone parents. We thus conclude that it is important to consider household characteristics when studying White Flight specifically and ethnic residential segregation more general.

Voor veel huurders is het betalen van de huurwaarborg een zware last om te dragen. Banken hebben daarom in België sinds 2007 de wettelijke verplichting om via een bankwaarborg de huurwaarborg aan hun cliënten voor te schieten. Dit onderzoek ging via praktijktesten bij 549 bankkantoren in Vlaanderen na of banken al dan niet voldoen aan deze wettelijke verplichting. Bijna de helft van de banken komt deze wettelijke verplichting niet na. Circa een kwart van de bankkantoren gaat wel in op een vraag voor een bankwaarborg. De meeste banken rekenen wel hoge dossierkosten aan. De resultaten wijzen op ‘geïnstitutionaliseerde uitsluiting’ van de meest precaire huurders op de woningmarkt.

Conclusies Vanaf het einde van de achttiende eeuw, maar meer nog in de tweede helft van de negentiende eeuw vonden grote veranderingen plaats in de verschillen in reproductie tussen de belangrijkste sociaal-economische groepen op het Groninger platteland. Arbeiders werden demografisch veel succesvoller dan de twee andere groepen, namelijk landbouwers, en diegenen werkzaam in nijverheid en diensten, vooral als kleine zelfstandige of in enigszins geschoolde beroepen. Uitgaande van de beschikbare informatie, lijkt er sprake van vier belangrijke ontwikkelingen. Ten eerste daalde de huwelijksleeftijd van arbeidersvrouwen sterk in vergelijking met de twee andere groepen (een ontwikkeling die in elk geval in de tweede helft van de negentiende eeuw ook elders in Nederland plaatsvond: van Poppel 1993). Ten tweede was lange tijd de huwelijksvruchtbaarheid van arbeidersvrouwen lager dan van andere vrouwen. Dit verschil nam sterk toe in de eerste helft van de negentiende eeuw. Echter na 1850 draaide dit volledig om, en waren arbeidersvrouwen juist veel vruchtbaarder, in het bijzonder aan het eind van de negentiende eeuw. Ten derde lijken de verschillen in kindersterfte en volwassenensterfte tussen arbeiders en de rest wat geringer te zijn geworden in de tweede helft van de negentiende eeuw. Ten vierde nam het aandeel buitenechtelijke kinderen – vermoedelijk vooral kinderen van arbeidersdochters – eerst flink toe in het begin van de negentiende eeuw, om later weer te gaan dalen. Jammer genoeg beschikken we thans nog niet over betrouwbare schattingen over de ontwikkeling van de mate waarin men ongehuwd bleef naar sociale groep. Het wordt zeer duidelijk dat de reproductie van arbeiders relatief laag was in de achttiende eeuw. Dit veranderde echter rigoureus in de loop van de negentiende eeuw en vooral na 1850. Pas in deze periode worden arbeiders qua voortplanting veruit de meest succesvolle sociale groep in Noordwest-Groningen. Dit is een situatie die pas rond 1850 ontstaan is. Dat dit niet eerder gebeurde komt doordat het effect van de sterk dalende huwelijksleeftijd van arbeidersvrouwen in de eerste helft van de negentiende eeuw nog vrijwel volledig gecompenseerd werd door de fors gedaalde huwelijksvruchtbaarheid in deze periode. Pas toen die huwelijksvruchtbaarheid zich herstelde na 1850, mogelijk als gevolg van de stijgende levensstandaard, werden de arbeiders opeens veel reproductiever dan de rest. Het, althans aan het eind van de negentiende eeuw, nog achterwege blijven van de demografische transitie onder arbeidersgezinnen in Noordwest-Groningen, zorgde er voor dat deze generatie arbeiders demografisch veel succesvoller werd dan alle andere sociale groepen.Dit laatste moet een positief effect gehad hebben op de kansen op opwaartse sociale mobiliteit en een negatief effect op de kansen op neerwaartse sociale mobiliteit in de tweede helft van de negentiende eeuw, uitgaande van een gegeven ontwikkeling van de sociale structuur (ceteris paribus). In de praktijk resulteerde dit vermoedelijk echter toch niet in een heel sterke feitelijke stijging van de opwaartse sociale mobiliteit in deze periode, omdat het aandeel van de arbeiders verder toenam in Noordwest-Groningen en dus de sociale structuur niet bepaald constant was. De opwaartse sociale mobiliteit zou echter nog lager en de neerwaartse sociale mobiliteit nog hoger zijn geweest, indien de biologische reproductie van de arbeiders niet zo sterk boven dat van de boeren en de middenklasse zou zijn uitgestegen na 1850, en zoals in de jaren vóór 1850 lager dan de boeren en middenklasse was gebleven. Een niet onbelangrijk deel van het omvangrijke nageslacht van de Groningse landarbeiders vertrok overigens naar elders na het midden van de negentiende eeuw om daar zijn positie trachten te verbeteren. In het bijzonder Noord-Amerika was een aantrekkelijke bestemming voor hen. Het is in dit opzicht heel interessant om na te gaan, in hoeverre het Groninger platteland representatief is voor andere delen van Nederland, en zelfs van de westerse wereld. Waren de armste delen van de bevolking elders ook minder reproductief vóór 1850? En werden ze demografisch veel succesvoller in de loop van de negentiende eeuw als gevolg van het verdwijnen van belemmeringen op huwelijkssluiting, van de modernisering en van een stijging van de levensstandaard in de tweede helft van de negentiende eeuw, waar vooral de laagste klassen voordeel van hadden?

Immigratie en diversiteit zijn vaak het onderwerp van passionele debatten. Maar hoe zit het nu met de sociale positie van de Turken en Marokkanen in de maatschappij? Leven ze eerder naast dan met de Belgen? En welke plaats nemen de ‘nieuwe’ migrantengroepen zoals de Bulgaren, Slowaken en Polen in? Dit boekt schetst een beeld van de levensomstandigheden van enerzijds Turken en Maghrebijnen en anderzijds Midden- en Oost-Europeanen in Gent. De auteurs analyseren met uniek cijfermateriaal de trends van het afgelopen decennium op het vlak van werken, wonen en huwen. Ze argumenteren dat we in de Belgische migratiegeschiedenis op een dubbel keerpunt zijn gekomen. Ten eerste stellen ze vast dat de Turkse en Maghrebijnse Gentenaars geleidelijk overgaan van gesloten ‘etnische enclaves’ naar een meer interactieve ‘etnische mozaïek’. De ruimtelijke segregatie van deze groepen neemt af in Gent, de Turkse enclave in de stad boet aan belang in, en een deel van de Turken trekt naar de meer welgestelde suburbane stadsrand. Tegelijkertijd daalt het aandeel Turkse en Marokkaanse immigratiehuwelijken spectaculair. Ten tweede stellen de auteurs vast dat de Polen, Slowaken en Bulgaren in Gent momenteel minder gesegregeerd leven dan tien jaar geleden. Niettemin ontstaat het potentieel voor een Bulgaarse enclavevorming. Bovendien zijn er grote sociaaleconomische verschillen tussen deze drie migrantengroepen. Dit boek brengt een genuanceerd verhaal over het reilen van zeilen van de ‘oude’ en ‘nieuwe’ migrantengroepen in Gent. Door zijn focus op structurele thema’s biedt het een alternatief voor de dominante ‘culturalistische’ kijk op etnische diversiteit. Het doorprikt hierdoor veel gangbare clichés over migranten zonder evenwel de kop in het zand te steken voor een aantal problemen.

It has been argued in sociology, economics, and evolutionary anthropology that family size limitation enhances the intergenerational upward mobility chances in modernized societies. If parents have a large flock, family resources get diluted and intergenerational mobility is bound to head downwards. Yet, the empirical record supporting this resource dilution hypothesis is limited. This article investigates the empirical association between family size limitation and intergenerational mobility in an urban, late nineteenth century population in Western Europe. It uses life course data from the Belgian city of Antwerp between 1846 and 1920. Findings are consistent with the resource dilution hypothesis: after controlling for confounding factors, people with many children were more likely to end up in the lower classes. Yet, family size limitation was effective as a defensive rather than an offensive strategy: it prevented the next generation from going down rather than helping them to climb up the social ladder. Also, family size appears to have been particularly relevant for the middle classes. Implications for demographic transition theory are discussed.

Heterogamy is commonly considered detrimental to relationships because of its hypothesized link with cultural differences and social disapproval. Focusing on the link with cultural differences, this explanation lacks solid empirical support. The scarce studies encounter problems related to the choice and measurement of cultural differences, while psychology oriented studies have generally not confirmed this link. In addition, the wide theoretical base that supports this link, is challenged by a number of empirical considerations that cast doubt on the cultural similarity of homogamous couples (e.g. gender differences in values and behaviors), and the quasi-mechanical effect that is assumed to lead to cultural differences for heterogamous couples (e.g. selection on values and behaviors). Progressing from the inconclusive findings of previous studies, this study examines the theoretically founded link between educational heterogamy, as heterogamy in achieved characteristics is asserted most important for cultural differences, and cultural differences concerning child-rearing. In addition, Diagonal Reference Models are used to analyze the individually measured values and behaviors of both partners, as couples data from the Netherlands are used (survey Child-rearing and family in the Netherlands). Results indicate that education shows the expected positive association with the child-rearing behaviours of support, and the expected negative association with the child-rearing behaviours of negative control and the child-rearing values of adaptation. However, for educational heterogamy, the situation appears more complex, as results show that homogamous couples are not free of cultural differences either (e.g. gender differences in negative control), while the degree of cultural differences is affected by other important factors as well (e.g. processes of selection). Nevertheless, a positive link between educational heterogamy and cultural differences was found for support and adaptation. For negative control, a different mechanism appeared to be at work with increased negative control for both partners in heterogamous couples. While this does not support the hypothesis of increased cultural differences for heterogamous couples, it does fit with the idea of heterogamy leading to problems in heterogamous families.

The detrimental effect of heterogamy on relationship quality and stability is well established in sociological theory. However, empirical research has failed to provide unequivocal support for this view. An important reason for this appears to be at a conceptual level. Focusing on educational heterogamy, two types of effects have been commonly examined under the banner of heterogamy effects: 1. the effect of the educational difference between the partners, and 2. the interaction effect between the levels of education of the partners. Despite representing two conceptually different views on heterogamy effects, previous research has failed to distinguish between them. This paper presents the theoretical distinction between both heterogamy effects, and empirically analyses them. This is done using Diagonal Reference Models – a technique from social mobility research that is particularly useful for analyzing heterogamy effects. Based on data concerning 643 couples from the survey Child-rearing and family in the Netherlands, it is shown that the effect of the educational difference is felt by both men and women as both report the highest marital satisfaction in marriages where the educational difference is to the advantage of the husband. In addition, men, but not women, are subject to the interaction effect, as the importance of his level of education in determining his own degree of marital satisfaction is accentuated, the more the educational balance in the couple is to his advantage. These results illustrate how conceptual clarification, in combination with the appropriate analysis technique may advance the field of heterogamy research.

In de tweede helft van de negentiende eeuw vond er een omslag in de prostitutie plaats in middelgrote Nederlandse steden. Na een aanvankelijke bloei zou de prostitutiemarkt van vraag en aanbod in deze provinciehoofdsteden en regionale centra nagenoeg verdwijnen. Wat was de oorzaak van deze daling? In de Nederlandse historiografie worden de verklaringen voornamelijk gezocht in politieke en sociaal-culturele veranderingen. In tegenstelling tot de buitenlandse literatuur is er nauwelijks aandacht voor de impact van de moderne economische groei. Toch zal uit dit archiefonderzoek blijken dat de snelle groei van de steden, de veranderende arbeidsmarkt voor vrouwen en de uitbreiding van het openbaar vervoer wel degelijk een impact hebben op de prostitutiemarkt. Om na te gaan in hoeverre de economische invloed zich verhoud tot die van de politieke en de sociaal-culturele worden in dit artikel al deze aspecten onderzocht. Hiervoor is een grote diversiteit aan archiefbronnen noodzakelijk. Daarom zal het onderzoek zich richten op de stad Haarlem.

The effect of educational differences between partners on marital quality and stability is commonly analysed using difference, or compound measures. This article considers the theoretical foundations for these approaches and examines an alternative approach, diagonal reference models (DRMs). The three methods are then compared empirically, using data on 629 married couples from the survey Child-Rearing and Family in the Netherlands. Difference measures show no effect on marital satisfaction, whereas compound measures and DRMs do show an effect. As DRMs also allow for the quantification of this effect, while being theoretically and methodologically appropriate, they are affirmed the best method.

Klassiek toont onderzoek dat heterogame huwelijken zich kenmerken door een verminderde huwelijkstevredenheid en een verhoogd echtscheidingsrisico (Janssen, 2001). Dit wordt verklaard door de mogelijke aanwezigheid van zowel culturele verschillen als sociale afkeuring bij deze koppels. Tot op heden werden deze mogelijk verklarende tussenschakels – culturele verschillen en sociale steun – nauwelijks empirisch onderzocht. In die zin is de specifieke eigenheid – en eventueel ruimere kwetsbaarheid – van heterogame koppels dan ook onduidelijk. In het artikel wordt nagegaan in welke mate culturele verschillen werkelijk aanwezig zijn binnen heterogame koppels. Gezien het relatief toegenomen belang van opleiding in de hedendaagse partnerkeuze (Kalmijn, 1991), wordt gefocust op koppels die heterogaam zijn in termen van opleidingsniveau. Voor deze koppels wensen we enerzijds de stelling omtrent de link tussen heterogamie en culturele verschillen empirisch te testen en anderzijds de huidige focus van onderzoek naar heterogamie te verruimen. In die zin zullen in het onderzoek zowel de mogelijke verschillen in bepaalde algemene waarden als in bepaalde opvoedingswaarden en –gedragingen worden onderzocht. O.b.v. de theoretische inzichten van het symbolisch interactionisme verwachten we immers dat heterogamie niet enkel aanleiding geeft tot verschillen in algemene realiteitsvisie, maar ook tot verschillen in visie t.o.v. het opvoeden van kinderen binnen het gezin. In de analyses worden multi-actor gegevens van 632 gezinnen uit de dataset ‘Opvoeding en gezin in Nederland’ geanalyseerd. Hieruit blijkt 1. dat er een associatie is tussen heterogamie en de mate van verschillen in het belang dat algemeen aan conformiteit wordt gehecht door de partners en 2. dat in ‘heterogame gezinnen’ de moeder in vergelijking met de vader een meer straffende opvoedingsstijl hanteert dat in ‘homogame gezinnen’. Dit toont dat het verhoogde risico op culturele verschillen binnen heterogame gezinnen niet enkel geldt voor verschillen in algemene waarden, maar ook voor verschillen in visie omtrent meer specifieke aspecten zoals de opvoeding van kinderen.

It has been argued on theoretical grounds in sociology, economics, and in other disciplines that family size limitation by parents enhances the upward mobility chances of their children in industrial and post-industrial populations. Yet, the empirical record supporting or contradicting the theoretical expectations is surprisingly limited. The aim of this contribution is to test empirically the effects of family size limitation on children's intergenerational mobility in an urban, late nineteenth century population in Western Europe. More specifically, we use a new database with life course data on the individual level about people who ever lived in the Belgian city of Antwerp between 1846 and 1920. The database allows us to reconstruct reproductive life courses and occupational status for two consecutive generations.

This paper examines the partner selection of the lower classes during an urban crisis period in early industrial Belgian cities. It was found that in this period characterized by an economic transition, overpopulation, migration and a low standard of living, social heterogamy was high, whereas social homogamy increased, or was 'restored', in the subsequent period. The urban crisis effect on partner selection contradicts the claims of modernization theory that there was a gradual increase in societal openness and that societal openness was typically modern, but it fits the idea of the informalization of marriage, a process marked by an increase in unmarried cohabitation and illegitimacy. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. We consider a Plackett-Dale model to study familial transmittance of longevity. We focus the analysis on associations between mother, father and first child, and therefore we work with family clusters of equal size. We propose a series of tests to perform inferences on the model parameters. The methodology is applied to a demographic database of a Flemish village (18th-20th century). The main substantial conclusion is that familial transmission happens mainly via the mother. We explore the impact of such other factors as censoring, gender effect, age at death, etc. This paper complements the results of Matthijs et al. (2002) and suggests further analyses to better understand the precise mechanisms behind these associations. The aim of this article is to explore the relation between age homogamy and the increasing importance of romantic love, using the certificates of first marriages in nineteenth century Leuven. Alternative explanations of age homogamy are evaluated. Also the methodological consequences of the historical decline of the age-at-marriage are taken into account.
