Using hierarchical confirmatory factor analysis to analyze multitrait-multimethod data, the validity of the Satisfaction with My Supervisor Scale (SWMSS) was evaluated by comparing the SWMSS to commitments to the organization, department, and occupation for 100 professional employees of a multinational software firm. Solute carrier family 1, member 1 (SLC1A1; also known as EAAT3 and EAAC1) is the major epithelial transporter of glutamate and aspartate in the kidneys and intestines of rodents. Within the brain, SLC1A1 serves as the predominant neuronal glutamate transporter and buffers the synaptic release of the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate within the interneuronal synaptic cleft. Recent studies have also revealed that polymorphisms in SLC1A1 are associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in early-onset patient cohorts. Here we report that SLC1A1 mutations leading to substitution of arginine to tryptophan at position 445 (R445W) and deletion of isoleucine at position 395 (I395del) cause human dicarboxylic aminoaciduria, an autosomal recessive disorder of urinary glutamate and aspartate transport that can be associated with mental retardation. These mutations of conserved residues impeded or abrogated glutamate and cysteine transport by SLC1A1 and led to near-absent surface expression in a canine kidney cell line. A study was conducted to assess a healthy work organization intervention implemented in a retail setting. Employee teams in 11 intervention stores developed customized plans for improving work organization using a participatory process. Findings indicate that intervention stores fared better than controls on general indices of perceived health and safety.

Perceived union support and union instrumentality have been shown to uniquely predict union loyalty. This study was the first to explicitly examine the relation between perceived union support and union instrumentality. Surveys were completed by 273 union members and 29 union stewards. A comparison of 2 models, 1 based on organizational support theory and 1 based on union participation theories, found that the model based on organizational support theory, in which union instrumentality was an antecedent to perceived union support and led to union loyalty and subsequently union participation, best fit the data. The model based on union participation theories, in which perceived union support was an antecedent of union instrumentality and led to union loyalty and subsequently union participation, was not supported. Union instrumentality was related to union commitment, but the relation was completely mediated by perceived union support. Keywords: union participation, union support, union instrumentality

Through the use of affective, normative, and continuance commitment in a multivariate 2nd-order factor latent growth modeling approach, the authors observed linear negative trajectories that characterized the changes in individuals across time in both affective and normative commitment. In turn, an individual's intention to quit the organization was characterized by a positive trajectory. A significant association was also found between the change trajectories such that the steeper the decline in an individual's affective and normative commitments across time, the greater the rate of increase ill that individual's intention to quit, and, further, the greater the likelihood that the person actually left the organization over the next 9 months. Findings regarding continuance commitment and its, components were mixed.

This paper presents an initial test and validation of a model of healthy work organization. A questionnaire based on the proposed model was completed by 1,130 employees of a national retailer. The instrument measured 29 first-order constructs underlying the six higher-order domains of the model. The overall model fit and relationships among the second-order factors were examined using AMOS structural equation-modelling procedures. The structural analyses presented here support the proposed model. An acceptable overall fit was demonstrated, and all second-order, and second- to first-order, relationships were significant. Employees' perceptions of their organization affect their perception of the climate, which impacts the way people relate to their job and see their future in the organization, ultimately impacting their work adjustment, health and well-being. The tachykinin peptide bufokinin, isolated from the cane toad intestine, is important in intestinal and cardiovascular regulation in the toad. In this study, three tachykinin N[K.sub.1]-like receptor isoforms, bN[K.sub.1]-A, bN[K.sub.1]-B, and bN[K.sub.1]-C, encoding proteins of 309, 390, and 371 amino acids, respectively, were cloned from the toad brain and intestine. These isoforms differ only at the intracellular COOH terminus. The bN[K.sub.1]-A and bN[K.sub.1]-B isoforms are similar to the truncated and full-length forms of the mammalian N[K.sub.1] receptor, whereas bN[K.sub.1]-C is unique and does not correspond to any previously described receptor. RT-PCR studies demonstrated that three isoform transcripts are widely distributed in the toad with high expression in gut, spinal cord, brain, lung, and skeletal muscle. When expressed in COS-7 cells, bufokinin showed similar high affinity (I[C.sub.50] 0.6-0.8 nM) in competing for [sup.125]I-labeled Bolton-Hunter bufokinin binding at all receptors, but the binding affinities of substance P (SP) and neurokinin A (NKA) were very different at each isoform. When expressed in Xenopus oocytes, the truncated isoform, bN[K.sub.1]-A, was inactive, whereas bN[K.sup.1]-B and bN[K.sub.1]-C produced changes in chloride current when stimulated by tachykinins (minimum concentrations: bufokinin, 0.1 nM; SP, 1 nM; and NKA, 10 nM). A marked desensitization of the response was seen to subsequent applications of tachykinins, as experienced by the mammalian N[K.sub.1] receptor. In summary, our study describing three isoforms of N[K.sub.1]-like receptor from the toad suggests that the alternative splicing of N[K.sub.1] receptor is a physiologically conserved mechanism and raises a fundamental question as to the physiological role of each isoform. bufokinin; tachykinin receptors; sequencing and cloning; Xenopus oocyte expression; amphibian
