Novel nondata-aided algorithms are proposed for joint estimation of timing and carrier phase in minimum-shift keying (MSK)-type modulations. Performance with MSK and Gaussian MSK is assessed by computer simulations and compared with that of other existing estimation schemes. Index Terms--MSK, phase recovery, timing recovery.

We propose a novel two-stage noncoherent receiver for interleaved trellis-coded CPFSK signals transmitted over time-selective channels. The first stage of the receiver computes reliability information about the transmitted symbols and delivers it to the second stage which operates as a trellis decoder. Simulation results show that the proposed detection strategy outperforms previous noncoherent receivers with a moderate increase in complexity. Novel symbol-by-symbol differential detection algorithms are proposed for minimum-shift keying signals transmitted over additive white Gaussian noise and frequency-flat Rayleigh fading channels. They are derived as approximations to the maximum likelihood noncoherent detection strategy. Their error performance is assessed by computer simulation and is compared with that of other noncoherent detectors. It is shown that, with fading channels, the new algorithms outperform the traditional methods. Index Terms--Differential detection, frequency-flat Rayleigh channels, MSK signals.

In this paper, optimum one-shot detection over known and partially known doubly selective Rayleigh fading channels is investigated. Reduced complexity channel models based on Gauss quadrature rules and Taylor power series are derived and are employed to develop novel analytical tools for the performance analysis of one-shot detectors. Numerical results allow to assess the implicit diversity gain provided by both channel multipath and signal fading and the energy loss due to the mismatch of the receiver filter.
