OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical value of high mobility group box-1 (HMGB-1), C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT), and CRP to albumin (Alb) ratio in the diagnosis and evaluation of the severity of sepsis in children. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 90 children, 50 with sepsis and 40 with general infection, whose symptoms did not meet the criteria for diagnosis of sepsis, were admitted to the Pediatrics Department of Jingzhou Central Hospital in Hubei Province between November 2021 and December 2022, were enrolled and selected as experimental and control group, respectively. The serum of two groups was collected within 24 hours after admission, the levels of HMGB-1 were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and CRP, PCT, Alb, and hospitalization days were recorded. The differences in indicators between the two groups were compared, and correlation analysis was performed between hospitalization days and various indicators. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was drawn to evaluate the independent or combined value of CRP, PCT, HMGB-1, and CRP/Alb ratio in the early diagnosis of sepsis in children. RESULTS: These four indicators of children with sepsis were significantly higher than those in the general infection group (all p=0.000). The levels of CRP, PCT and CRP/Alb ratio were significantly positively correlated with the hospitalization days (r=0.329, 0.333, 0.329; p=0.02, 0.01, 0.002). The area under curve (AUC) of CRP, PCT, HMGB-1, and CRP/Alb ratio for the diagnosis of sepsis in children was 0.798, 0.817, 0.838, 0.809, respectively, and that of the combination of four indicators was 0.952. CONCLUSIONS: CRP, PCT, HMGB-1, and CRP/Alb ratio resulted as effective indicators for early diagnosis and evaluation of childhood sepsis, having a higher value in combined diagnosis. A novel method is presented for the production of the 6 + 1 filament MgB2 wires using internal Mg diffusion (IMD) process. For the MgB2 long wire with 1.4-mm diameter produced by graphene-coated Nb addition, the critical current (Ic) is about 1000 A at 4 T and 4.2 K, which is 2.5 times higher than that of the undoped sample. The increased Ic is attributed to the enhanced flux pinning force and improved grain connectivity. The obtained results show that graphene-coated Nb addition MgB2 wires have excellent superconductivity and mechanical property compared with the conventional PIT wires in practical application. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore the expression level of Wnt1-inducible signaling pathway protein 1 (WISP1) and its clinical significance in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Quantitative Real Time-Polymerase Chain Reaction (qRT-PCR) was performed to detect the expression level of WISP1 in HCC tissues and cells. Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox proportional hazard regression model were chosen for single and multiple factor analysis of survival analysis, respectively. Furthermore, wound healing assay and transwell assay were used to verify the effect of WISP1 on HCC cell metastasis in vitro. RESULTS: The expression level of WISP1 in HCC tissues was significantly higher than that in para-cancer tissues (p<0.05). WISP1 expression was positively correlated with lymph node metastasis and clinical stage of HCC. Kaplan-Meier curve showed that HCC patients with higher WISP1 expression exhibited significantly worse progression free survival (PFS) time and overall survival (OS) time. Both univariate and multivariate analysis indicated that high expression of WISP1 was an independent predictor of poor prognosis in HCC. In addition, WISP1 significantly promoted the invasion and migration of HCC cells in vitro. CONCLUSIONS: WISP1 might contribute to the development of HCC, serving as a clinical biomarker and therapeutic target for HCC patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Heavy metal pollution in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is a serious environmental and health concern in China, particularly during winter. Here, we detected 40 elements in 24 h integrated daily PM2.5 samples collected in January 2014 from three typical Chinese metropolises (Beijing, Changchun, and Chengdu) to reflect elemental spatial variations, local sources, and regional transport. The measured elemental concentrations in Changchun were 11.1% and 48.4% higher than those in Beijing and Chengdu, respectively. Thus, PM2.5 from Changchun exhibited high levels and diversity in the elemental profile (characterized by high concentrations of industrial emission elemental markers). The results of elemental ratios and Pb isotopes proved that, except for a coal combustion source, vehicular emissions contributed more to PM2.5 heavy metals in Beijing than in the other two cities; Changchun PM2.5 elements received large contributions from industrial sources, including iron and steel manufacturing, and automobile industry. Moreover, crustal dust from long-range transport of regional air masses from the northwest regions of China played a crucial role in determining elemental levels in Beijing and Changchun, accounting for more than 50% of source intensity. However, a specific dominant source was not determined in Chengdu; the contribution of anthropogenic dust, mainly from construction activities, needs to be paid attention in Chengdu eastern area. This study contributed to enhancing our understanding of elemental spatial distribution characteristics and sources and to setting more judicious standards and strategies for PM2.5 bound heavy metals in China. The small intestine is an important digestive organ and plays a vital role in the life of a pig. We tested the hypothesis that the length of the small intestine is related to growth performance and intestinal functions of piglets. A total of 60 piglets (Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire), weaned at day 21, were fed an identical diet during a 28-day trial. At the end of the study, all piglets were sacrificed, dissected and grouped according to small intestine lengths (SILs), either short small intestine (SSI), middle small intestine (MSI) or long small intestine (LSI), respectively. Positive relationships between SIL and BW, average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI) and gain-to-feed ratios (G : F) were observed. Final BW, ADG, ADFI and G : F significantly increased (P < 0.05) in MSI and LSI piglets compared with SSI piglets. Short small intestine and MSI had greater jejunal mucosa sucrase and alkaline phosphatase activities (P < 0.05) than LSI piglets. The mRNA level of solute carrier family 2 member 2 (Slc2a2) in the jejunal mucosa of SSI piglets was the greatest. The MSI piglets had a greater (P < 0.05) ileal villus height than other piglets and greater (P < 0.05) villus height-to-crypt depth ratios than LSI piglets. However, the LSI piglets had a greater (P < 0.05) ileal crypt depth than SSI piglets. No significant differences in duodenal, jejunal, caecal and colonic morphologies were detected among the groups. Moreover, luminal acetate, propionate, butyrate and total short-chain fatty acid contents were greater (P < 0.05) in SSI and MSI piglets than those in LSI piglets. In addition, there was greater serum glucose concentration in MSI piglets than other piglets. Serum albumin concentration in SSI piglets was the lowest. In conclusion, these results indicate that SIL was significantly positively associated with growth performance, and in terms of intestinal morphology and mucosal digestive enzyme activity, the piglets with a medium length of small intestine have better digestion and absorption properties. OBJECTIVE: Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have emerged as pivotal participants of various tumors. This manuscript focuses on the function of lncRNA linc01433 (linc01433) in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) development. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Quantitative Real Time-Polymerase Chain Reaction (qRTPCR) was performed to detect expressions of linc01433 and microRNA-1301 (miR-1301) in ESCC tissues and cells. Cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) and colony formation assays were used to verify proliferative ability changes in ESCC influenced by linc01433 and miR-1303. Wound healing and transwell assays were chosen to determine migratory ability in ESCC cells. RESULTS: Linc01433 was abnormally up-regulated in ESCC tissues and cells. High level of linc01433 was positively correlated with tumor size and lymph node metastasis in ESCC patients. Up-regulation of linc01433 promoted cell proliferation and migration. MiR-1301 was a potential target of linc01433, and its level was negatively regulated by linc01433. MiR-1301 was responsible for linc01433-regulated proliferation and migration of ESCC. CONCLUSIONS: Linc01433 participated in ESCC progression by regulating miR-1301 and it could function as a novel biomarker in ESCC diagnosis and treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
