Peripheral Calcifying Odontogenic Cyst (PCOC) is the extraosseous form of calcifying odontogenic cyst that is limited to peripheral soft tissue without bony involvement. This case report presents a case of PCOC manifested as a progressive growth of gingival mass in a young male treated with excisional biopsy. Histological examination confirmed diagnosis of PCOC with presence of characteristic ghost cells and sporadic calcifications. No recurrence of the lesion and no complication were noted at three-year follow-up. Review of available literature on PCOC noted a predilection of occurrence in the mandible (61%) and in the anterior area of the jaws (58%). Mean age of patients was 41.7 ± SD25.43 (7–83) and 95% CI [33.6, 49.8] yrs. Mean size of the lesions was 1.38 ± SD1.1 (0.5–4.3) and 95% CI [0.93, 1.83] cm. Gender distribution was noted to be 51.3% male and 48.7% female.

Co-free and Ni-rich LiNi0.95Mn0.05O2 (NM95) cathodes are expected to be widely employed in power batteries due to their high charge storage capacity and cost-effectiveness. However, the loss of Co and increase in Ni contents result in highly active surfaces and unstable structures, compromising rate capability and cyclic stability. Herein, polyaniline-polyethylene glycol (PANI-PEG) coating layer, with excellent electronic and Li-ion conductivity, is introduced on NM95 surface to enhance charge transfer properties and cyclic stability. Several material and electrochemical characterization techniques, such as XRD, SEM, EDS, TEM, XPS, 4-point probe, CV and EIS, are utilized to unveil the positive influence of PANI-PEG on electrochemical performance. The results reveal that PANI-PEG layer can promote electron and Li+ conduction of NM95 due to the excellent electronic and Li+ conductivities. Besides, PANI-PEG acts as protective layer to hinder the corrosion of electrolyte and suppress side reactions. It is revealed that NM95 cathode coated with PANI-PEG with a mass ratio of 4/6, exhibits excellent initial capacity, as high as 219.4 and 163.1 mAh/g at 1 C and 5 C, respectively, and maintains capacity retention of 94.7% (1 C, 100th cycle) and 79.0% (5 C, 200th) under cut-off voltage of 4.3 V (vs. Li/Li+). Moreover, NM95 exhibits capacity retention of 70.7% after 100 charge/discharge cycles at 1 C within voltage range of 2.7 to 4.5 V (vs. Li/Li+). These results indicate that coating electronic/Li+ conductor is effective strategy to enhance rate performance and cyclic stability of Co-free and Ni-rich cathodes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Aims: The resect‐and‐discard strategy for colorectal polyps based on accurate optical diagnosis remains challenges. Our aim was to investigate the feasibility of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) for identifying colorectal polyp properties and diagnosis of colorectal cancer in fresh tissues during colonoscopy. Methods: 144,900 two dimensional images generated from 161 hyperspectral images of colorectal polyp tissues were prospectively obtained from patients undergoing colonoscopy. A residual neural network model was trained with transfer learning to automatically differentiate colorectal polyps, validated by histopathologic diagnosis. The diagnostic performances of the HSI‐AI model and endoscopists were calculated respectively, and the auxiliary efficiency of the model was evaluated after a 2‐week interval. Results: Quantitative HSI revealed histological differences in colorectal polyps. The HSI‐AI model showed considerable efficacy in differentiating nonneoplastic polyps, non‐advanced adenomas, and advanced neoplasia in vitro, with sensitivities of 96.0%, 94.0%, and 99.0% and specificities of 99.0%, 99.0%, and 96.5%, respectively. With the assistance of the model, the median negative predictive value of neoplastic polyps increased from 50.0% to 88.2% (p = 0.013) in novices. Conclusion: This study demonstrated the feasibility of using HSI as a diagnostic tool to differentiate neoplastic colorectal polyps in vitro and the potential of AI‐assisted diagnosis synchronized with colonoscopy. In this study, the adsorption of dibenzothiophene sulfone (DBTO) was investigated using clay minerals as adsorbents. Raw bentonite (BR) and raw activated clay (ACR) were impregnated with Fe3+ and Fe6+, creating bentonite-Fe3+ (BF3), bentonite-Fe6+ (BF6), activated clay-Fe3+ (ACF3), and activated clay-Fe6+ (ACF6). The surface functional groups, surface morphology, and surface area of the raw and modified adsorbents were studied through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, a scanning electron microscope, and Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller analysis, respectively. Batch experiments on simulated oil were done to test the effect of adsorption time (0.5–24 h), adsorption dosage (0.3–1.5 g), and adsorption temperature (30–50 °C). The results of the experiments showed the suitability of the pseudo-second order kinetic model on the clay adsorbent and sulfone system. This suggests that chemisorption is the rate-limiting step of the reaction. Equilibrium isotherms indicated the adherence of DBTO onto BR and BF3 to the Freundlich model, implying the heterogeneous adsorption of the sulfones onto the adsorbents. The systems of DBTO with BF6, ACR, ACF3, and ACF6 showed a better fit with the Dubinin-Radushkevich model. This denotes that adsorption happens through the filling of sulfones of the micropores on the adsorbent. Lastly, thermodynamic studies revealed the endothermic and non-spontaneous nature of the clay adsorbents and sulfone systems. The experiments showed that the impregnation of Fe3+ and Fe6+ lowered the desulfurization ability of the adsorbents. This could be due to the iron ions being hard acids and the sulfones being soft bases, thus showing lower compatibility than the raw counterparts of the adsorbents. Comparison with related studies showed that the prepared adsorbents, namely BF3 (5.1 mg g−1) and BF6 (6.4 mg g−1), had a higher adsorption capacity than Ni2+-loaded activated carbon (4.9 mg g−1) and activated clay (4.1 mg g−1). The study shows that BR (7.2 mg g−1) is the best-performing adsorbent, which can be set as the direction for future research. The present study aimed at identifying risk factors associated with periodontitis development and periodontal health disparities with emphasis on differential oral microbiota. The prevalence of periodontitis is recently rising dentate adults in the US, which presents a challenge to oral health and overall health. The risk of developing periodontitis is higher in African Americans (AAs), and Hispanic Americans (HAs) than in Caucasian Americans (CAs). To identify potentially microbiological determinations of periodontal health disparities, we examined the distribution of several potentially beneficial and pathogenic bacteria in the oral cavities of AA, CA, and HA study participants. Dental plaque samples from 340 individuals with intact periodontium were collected prior to any dental treatment, and levels of some key oral bacteria were quantitated using qPCR, and the medical and dental histories of participants were obtained retrospectively from axiUm. Data were analyzed statistically using SAS 9.4, IBM SPSS version 28, and R/RStudio version 4.1.2. Amongst racial/ethnic groups: 1) neighborhood medium incomes were significantly higher in the CA participants than the AA and the HA participants; 2) levels of bleeding on probing (BOP) were higher in the AAs than in the CAs and HAs; 3) Porphyromonas gingivalis levels were higher in the HAs compared to that in the CAs; 4) most P. gingivalis detected in the AAs were the fimA genotype II strain that was significantly associated with higher BOP indexes along with the fimA type IV strain. Our results suggest that socioeconomic disadvantages, higher level of P. gingivalis, and specific types of P. gingivalis fimbriae, particularly type II FimA, contribute to risks for development of periodontitis and periodontal health disparities.

Necrotizing periodontal disease (NPD) is a microbial infectious inflammatory disease of the gingiva and/or periodontium that is characterized by a rapid onset of inflammation, pain, and “punched out” cratered interdental papillae. Although NPD is not very common, diagnosis is mostly based on its unique clinical presentation. Some predisposing factors for developing NPD include poor oral hygiene, smoking, malnutrition, immunosuppression (such as in HIV infection, uncontrolled diabetes, and cancer), and stress. This report presents the case of a 22-year-old Caucasian woman, who was a heavy smoker but with otherwise showed no systemic disease and who suffered from severe inflammation of the gingiva, ulceration, and necrosis of the interdental papillae, and pseudomembrane formation. The patient had been hospitalized for a seizure episode and was diagnosed with malnutrition-induced seizure. NPD was diagnosed and the patient was treated successfully with nonsurgical scaling and root planing and behavioral modifications including smoking cessation and balanced nutrition intake. Disease remission was achieved after treatment. In addition, this case report reviews the effect of nutrients on the health of the periodontium.

From August 2010 to August 2020, there were 3 cases of pathologically diagnosed alveolar adenoma (AA) were reported in Peking Union Medical College Hospital so far, which was a rare benign neoplasm of the lung. The clinical manifestations and radiological characteristics on computer tomography of AA were heterogenous among these patients and lacked specificities. The difficulty in predictive differentiation of benign or malignant characteristic of the lesion led to some confusions in clinical practices. This paper reported 2 cases of AA and reviewed the literature of AA. Its clinical, radiographical and pathological characters were analyzed, so to provide more knowledge and improve the differential diagnosis of this disease.

IntroductionThe role of definitive radiotherapy in advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), especially in the metastatic setting, remains unclear. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the efficacy of chemoradiotherapy (CRT) versus chemotherapy (CT) alone in these selected patients.MethodsWe retrospectively evaluated 194 newly diagnosed advanced ESCC who underwent definitive CRT or CT alone, including 97 patients with locally advanced and 97 patients with distant metastatic disease. Cumulative overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were evaluated with a log-rank test. Propensity score matching was used to simulate random allocation. In addition, we performed subgroup analysis in the locally advanced and metastatic disease.ResultsAfter matching, 63 well-paired patients were selected. The adjusted median OS (12.5 vs. 7.6 months, p = 0.002) and PFS (9.0 vs. 4.8 months, p = 0.0025) in the CRT group were superior to that in the CT-alone group. Further subgroup analysis revealed that CRT conferred survival benefits to both locally advanced and metastatic cohorts. For patients with distant metastasis, median OS (12.9 vs. 9.3 months, p = 0.029) and PFS (9.9 vs. 4.0 months, p =0.0032) in the CRT group were superior to that in the CT-alone group. In a multivariate Cox regression analysis of the entire cohort, additional definitive radiotherapy was independently associated with better OS (p = 0.041) and PFS (p = 0.007).ConclusionsIn both locally advanced and metastatic ESCC, additional definitive-dose radiotherapy was associated with improved clinical outcomes. Therefore, more consideration should be given to its application in the metastatic setting.

Periodontitis disproportionately affects different racial and ethnic populations. In this study, we used qPCR to determine and compare oral microbial profiles in dental plaque samples from 191 periodontitis patients of different ethnic/racial backgrounds. We also obtained the periodontal parameters of these patients retrospectively using axiUm and performed statistical analysis using SAS 9.4. We found that in this patient cohort, neighborhood median incomes were significantly higher among Caucasians Americans (CAs) than among African Americans (AAs) and Hispanic Americans (HAs). Levels of total bacteria and Porphyromonas gingivalis, a keystone periodontal pathogen, were not evenly distributed among the three groups. We confirmed our previous findings that Streptococcus cristatus reduces P. gingivalis virulence potential and likely serves as a beneficial bacterium. We also showed the ratio of S. cristatus to P. gingivalis to be significantly higher in CAs than in HAs and AAs. Our results suggest that higher levels of P. gingivalis and lower ratios of S. cristatus to P. gingivalis may contribute to periodontal health disparities.

The success of dental implant therapy in the esthetic zone requires not only functional osseointegration but also a satisfactory esthetic outcome. To establish harmony, balance, and continuity of gingival architecture between an implant restoration and the adjacent natural dentition is challenging. Immediate implant placement and provisionalization following tooth extraction have been documented as a predictable treatment modality, with fewer surgical interventions needed, to replace a missing tooth in the esthetic zone. This case report illustrates immediate implant placement and provisionalization to replace a failing maxillary right central incisor while maintaining optimal gingival esthetics. The maxillary right central incisor was extracted without flap elevation to minimize soft and hard tissue trauma. Immediately afterwards, the implant was installed using a surgical stent and restored with a provisional crown that had no occlusal contacts. During healing, no significant adverse effects were observed clinically or radiographically. This proposed treatment modality provided the patient with immediate esthetics, function, and comfort without any complications during a follow-up period of 6.5 years.

Background: Macroscopic vascular invasion (MVI) is a terminal manifestation of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and carries an extremely poor prognosis. In Chinese and Korean HCC guidelines, transarterial chemoembolization (TACE), or/and radiotherapy (RT) is adopted for treatment of MVI. In the current study, we aimed to compare the long-term outcome of TACE + RT to that of RT alone in patients with local advanced HCC with MVI.Methods: In this retrospective study, 148 treatment-naive patients of HCC with MVI were enrolled. Of the patients enrolled, 49 received TACE + RT treatment, whereas 99 patients received RT alone as a monotherapy. Overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), and intrahepatic control were evaluated using univariable and propensity score–matched analyses.Results: During follow-up, 126 patients (85.1%) died. The median follow-up time was 55.0 months in the RT group and 57.0 months in the TACE + RT group. The TACE + RT group showed better OS and PFS than the RT group, but intrahepatic control was comparable in these two groups. Of 41 cases well-pairs after propensity score matching, the associations between TACE + RT and better OS and PFS remained (15.0 vs. 8.0 months, and 8.0 vs. 4.0 months, all P < 0.05). The 1-, 2-, 3-, and 5-years OS rates in the TACE + RT group were 56.1, 28.6, 20.8, and 15.7 vs. 31.5%, 13.1%, 9.8%, and 6.7% in the RT group, respectively (P = 0.017). The 6-, 12-, and 24-months rates in the TACE + RT group were 51.2, 39.0, and 23.1% vs. 36.6%, 13.9%, and 11.1% in the RT group, respectively (P = 0.04). Two patients (4.1%) experienced radiation-induced liver disease (RILD), and one (2.0%) experienced RT-related gastrointestinal (GI) bleed in the TACE + RT groups. Nine patients (9.1%) experienced RILD, and two (2.0%) experienced RT-related GI bleed in the RT groups.Conclusion: Transarterial chemoembolization + RT had well-complementarity with no more complications than RT alone, providing a better PFS and OS compared with RT-alone treatment for HCC with MVI.

Mast cells (MCs) are an important treatment target for high-affinity IgE Fc receptor (FcεRI)-mediated allergic diseases. The plant-derived molecule 4-methylumbelliferone (4-MU) has beneficial effects in animal models of inflammation and autoimmunity diseases. The aim of this study was to examine 4-MU effects on MC activation and probe the underlying molecular mechanism(s). We sensitized rat basophilic leukemia cells (RBLs) and mouse bone marrow-derived mast cells (BMMCs) with anti-dinitrophenol (DNP) immunoglobulin (Ig)E antibodies, stimulated them with exposure to DNP-human serum albumin (HSA), and then treated stimulated cells with 4-MU. Signaling-protein expression was determined by immunoblotting. In vivo allergic responses were examined in IgE-mediated passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) and ovalbumin (OVA)-induced active systemic anaphylaxis (ASA) mouse models. 4-MU inhibited β-hexosaminidase activity and histamine release dose-dependently in FcεRI-activated RBLs and BMMCs. Additionally, 4-MU reduced cytomorphological elongation and F-actin reorganization while down-regulating IgE/Ag-induced phosphorylation of SYK, NF-κB p65, ERK1/2, p38, and JNK. Moreover, 4-MU attenuated the PCA allergic reaction (i.e., less ear thickening and dye extravasation). Similarly, we found that 4-MU decreased body temperature, serum histamine, and IL4 secretion in OVA-challenged ASA model mice. In conclusion, 4-MU had a suppressing effect on MC activation both in vitro and in vivo and thus may represent a new strategy for treating IgE-mediated allergic conditions.
