63. Quantitative phase imaging of living red blood cells combining digital holographic microscopy and deep learning.

Abstract

Digital holographic microscopy as a non‐contacting, non‐invasive, and highly accurate measurement technology, is becoming a valuable method for quantitatively investigating cells and tissues. Reconstruction of phases from a digital hologram is a key step in quantitative phase imaging for biological and biomedical research. This study proposes a two‐stage deep convolutional neural network named VY‐Net, to realize the effective and robust phase reconstruction of living red blood cells. The VY‐Net can obtain the phase information of an object directly from a single‐shot off‐axis digital hologram. We also propose two new indices to evaluate the reconstructed phases. In experiments, the mean of the structural similarity index of reconstructed phases can reach 0.9309, and the mean of the accuracy of reconstructions of reconstructed phases is as high as 91.54%. An unseen phase map of a living human white blood cell is successfully reconstructed by the trained VY‐Net, demonstrating its strong generality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan on March 11, 2011, produced large amounts of Cs-polluted soil which must be controlled to prevent the spread of hazardous Cs into the environment. In this paper, the effects of heat treatment on the structure and properties of Cs-containing glass-ceramics, as a simulated nuclear waste form, were systematically investigated. Cesium atoms are chemically bonded in the pollucite structure, and the amorphous phase further encapsulates the pollucite crystals in the glass-ceramics, thus providing an extra protective layer for the immobilized Cs. XRD analysis, Raman and FT-IR studies on the glass-ceramics synergistically indicated that the optimum crystallization temperature for pollucite is around 1000 °C. The pollucite is predominantly the main crystalline phase with a narrow crystal size distribution between 0.5 and 2 μm. Standard leaching test results show that the leaching rate of Cs was very low (3.0 × 10−3 g/(m2·d)). The study offers a practical method for immobilizing Cs in pollucite-base glass-ceramics. Moreover, the experimentally obtained data may provide some important references for converting Cs-polluted soil into pollucite-base glass-ceramics waste form.

82. Summer Extreme Dust Activity in the Taklimakan Desert Regulated by the South Asian High.

Abstract

Summer dust aerosol in the Taklimakan Desert (TD) affects not only the albedo of the snow and ice sheets on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) but also air quality and precipitation in the downstream areas. In this study, the summer extreme dust activity in the TD was jointly investigated by using satellite observations and MERRA-2 reanalysis datasets and divided into two states: dust active period and dust inactive period. The horizontal and vertical distribution of summer dust during both the dust active and inactive periods, as derived from the MERRA-2 dataset, is consistent with satellite observations. By comparing the upper-level circulation and surface meteorological elements at two periods, we identify the South Asian High (SAH) as the dominant factor driving the extreme dust activity in the TD during summer. When the SAH is centered on the Iranian Plateau (IP), the dust aerosol in the TD exhibits increased activity and is lifted to higher altitudes due to significantly enhanced westerly winds, near-surface wind speed, and an ascending motion. Conversely, when the SAH is centered on the TP, the summer dust activity shows the opposite behavior. These new findings on the regulatory mechanism of the SAH on the summer dust activity in the TD are highly significant for understanding the occurrence and transport of summer Asian dust and its potential impact on heavy precipitation in the downstream areas.
