The injection system of the 3-GeV RCS (Rapid Cycling Synchrotron) in J-PARC (Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex) consists of four main orbit bump magnets (shift bump) to merge the injection beam with the circulating beam. In order to control the injection beam with sufficient accuracy, the shift bump magnets need a wide uniform magnetic field. The magnetic field design and the structural analysis of the shift bump magnets have been performed using three-dimensional electromagnetic and mechanical analysis codes. The shift bump magnets have realized a uniform field with less than 0.35% inhomogeneity over a wider area, which is 400 mm in width and 240 mm in height. Furthermore, the magnets operate with a high magnetic field and they are located in high radioactive level area. The flexible bar is applied to the coil as the countermeasure for thermal expansion and the insulator has strong radiation resistance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Femtosecond time-domain observations of SrTi( 18 O x 16 O 1 - x ) 3 [STO18] in ferroelectric phase transition have been conducted by impulsive stimulated Raman scattering (ISRS). The phonon-polariton of A 1 -symmetry can be detected at the first time by the use of the heterodyne detection method with an optical phase mask. The static dielectric constant, which is calculated from the dispersion relation of the observed phonon-polariton, agrees well with the value reported in dielectric measurement. This fact indicates that the observed mode is the phonon-polariton originated from the coupling system between the ferroelectric soft mode and photon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sufficient information on the mechanisms of radiocesium translation from substrate to mushroom and long-term radiocesium accumulation is still not available, though high concentrations of radiocesium were reported in the fruiting bodies of various species of mushrooms especially after the Chernobyl accident. We studied the concentration and existing state of Cs in the cultured mycelium of the edible mushroom ( Pleurotus ostreatus (Fr.) Kummer Y-1) using NMR. The133Cs NMR resulting spectra exhibited two resonance signals arising from the mycelium whereas one resonance signal from the external medium and CsCl standard solution. The chemical form of the signal in the downfield found in the only mycelium might be concerned with Cs accumulation in the mycelium. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SUMMARY Soil properties relating to the sediment volume of Ando soils varied depending on their physical state. The water content is a useful index property for the sediment volume of field-moist soils. The sediment volume of air-dried soils increased with decreasing clay content and with increasing organic carbon content. The water retention at 52% relative humidity was related to the sediment volume of soils subjected to a sonic wave treatment. An explanation of this behaviour is given in terms of the tendency of Ando soils to form water-stable aggregates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In saffron cod, Eleginus gracilis, the antifreeze glycoprotein (AFGP) is present during the winter. The effects of salmon prolactin (sPRL) and growth hormone (sGH) on plasma osmolality, sodium concentration and protein content of the saffron cod were investigated. In the winter, plasma osmolality and protein content decreased following the intraperitoneal injection of sPRL (20 µg kg-1 day-1 × 3) but injection of the same dose of sGH had no effect on either plasma osmolality or protein content. In similar experiments performed during the summer, sPRL and sGH had no effect on these parameters. The results suggest that PRL may act on the kidney, possibly clearing antifreeze glycoprotein (AFGP) by increasing glomerular filtration.
