This study explored the relationship between mental health, i.e., depression and anxiety, and reading difficulties (RD) in Chinese elementary school children. Participants were 1535 grades 3, 4, and 5 students from three elementary schools in Xi'an, China. Children with and without RD were compared to their depression and anxiety. Additionally, children's self-ratings, parents' ratings, and teachers' ratings of depression and anxiety were compared to better understand mental health issues of Chinese children with RD. The findings showed that Chinese children with RD experienced more depression but not anxiety compared to their typically developing peers across all three grade levels. Reports from all three informants consistently reflected that children with RD experienced more depression. However, some inconsistencies were found between self-reported levels of depression and anxiety and the observations made by parents and teachers. Children reported experiencing more depression than their parents and teachers observed but less anxiety than their parents reported. This study emphasizes the importance of understanding the links between RD and mental health and the need for appropriate intervention programs to help children with RD cope with the mental health challenges.

Writing has been recognized as a core competency for postgraduate students. However, improving writing performance, particularly for first-year postgraduate students, remains an important and challenging task. This study aimed to explore the effects of student engagement in peer feedback on writing performance from cognitive, affective and behavioral perspectives. Specifically, the participants were 88 postgraduate students. With the support of an online writing and peer review system (Peerceptiv), participants were asked to write an essay, engage in the peer feedback process, and revise their essays. Correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were utilized to analyze data on the quality of participants' essays, peer feedback procedures, and interviews. Results showed that cognitive engagement, affective engagement, and behavioral engagement were significantly associated with postgraduate students' writing performance. The analysis indicated that the helpfulness of provided comments was the strongest predictor of writing performance, followed by suggestion, integration, and positive affective engagement. These findings highlight the significance of student engagement in peer feedback to improve writing performance in higher education. Recommendations for future research on quality improvement in writing performance are suggested based on the findings.

This study evaluated the effect of black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae oil (BO) produced by a novel technique, subcritical butane extraction, on the flesh quality, lipid nutrients and muscle growth of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fillet, and investigated the alleviating mechanisms of dietary astaxanthin (AST) supplementation. Two hundred and forty fish (215.16 ± 2.30 g) were distributed to three groups with four replicates. Fish were fed three experimental diets for 8 weeks: the control diet (CD diet), total fish oil of the CD diet was replaced with BO to formulate the BO100 diet, and then 1 g/kg AST was supplemented with the BO100 diet to formulate the AST diet. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and microRNAs (miRNAs) are closely related to the treatment of human diseases. Traditional biological experiments often require time-consuming and labor-intensive in their search for mechanisms of disease. Computational methods are regarded as an effective way to predict unknown lncRNA-miRNA interactions (LMIs). However, most of them complete their tasks by mainly focusing on a single lncRNA-miRNA network without considering the complex mechanism between biomolecular in life activities, which are believed to be useful for improving the accuracy of LMI prediction. To address this, a heterogeneous information network (HIN) learning model with neighborhood-level structural representation, called HINLMI, to precisely identify LMIs. In particular, HINLMI first constructs a HIN by integrating nine interactions of five biomolecules. After that, different representation learning strategies are applied to learn the biological and network representations of lncRNAs and miRNAs in the HIN from different perspectives. Finally, HINLMI incorporates the XGBoost classifier to predict unknown LMIs using final embeddings of lncRNAs and miRNAs. Experimental results show that HINLMI yields a best performance on the real dataset when compared with state-of-the-art computational models. Moreover, several analysis experiments indicate that the simultaneous consideration of biological knowledge and network topology of lncRNAs and miRNAs allows HINLMI to accurately predict LMIs from a more comprehensive perspective. The promising performance of HINLMI also reveals that the utilization of rich heterogeneous information can provide an alternative insight for HINLMI to identify novel interactions between lncRNAs and miRNAs.

The anti-Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) drug fidaxomicin is a natural polyketide metabolite mainly produced by Micromonosporaceae, such as Actinoplanes deccanensis, Dactylosporangium aurantiacum, and Micromonospora echinospora. In the present study, we employed a stepwise strategy by combining heterologous expression, chassis construction, promoter engineering, activator and transporters overexpression, and optimization of fermentation media for high-level production of fidaxomicin. The maximum yield of 384 mg/L fidaxomicin was achieved with engineered Streptomyces albus D7-VHb in 5 L-tank bioreactor, and it was approximately 15-fold higher than the native strain Actinoplanes deccanensis YP-1 with higher strain stability and growth rate. This study developed an enhanced chassis strain, and for the first time, achieved the heterologous synthesis of fidaxomicin through a combinatorial metabolic engineering strategy.

Objective Leg problems including lameness and tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) are one of the most important factors affecting health and animal welfare in meat-type poultry, which are considerably impacted by dietary vitamin regimens. The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary vitamin levels on growth performance and tibia quality in 14-d-old meat ducks. Methods One-d-old Cherry Valley meat-type male ducks were allocated to two vitamin regimens for 14 d, which was formulated according to the recommendation of the National Research Council (NRC, 1994) or China Agricultural Industry Standards (NY/T 2122-2012). Each group included 8 replicates with 16 birds per replicate. Results There was no significant difference in the growth performance of ducks, whereas dietary NY/T vitamin supplementation decreased leg abnormalities as compared to the NRC group, along with similar tibia length, perimeter, and the relative weight of tibia. The tibia from the birds that received the NY/T vitamin diet exhibited markedly higher (p 0.05). Conclusion NY/T vitamin diet improved tibia quality and subsequently decreased leg abnormalities in 14-d-old ducks, which was probably linked with the promoted bone formation.

Sourdough flavors were closely related to microbial metabolism. The microbial diversity of foxtail millet dough during fermentation has never been studied. Here, the metabolic potential and diversity of the bacterial community were analyzed by metagenomic during dough fermentation. Firmicutes was the dominant phylum in the dough, within heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria (e.g., Companilactobacillus, Limosilactobacillus, Pediococcus and Lactobacillus) as the most abundant bacteria. Proteobacteria was gradually inhibited after fermentation. Companilactobacillus_crustorum was notably found abundant during dough leavening. Limosilactobacillus_fermentum increased markedly during fermentation, while Companilactobacillus_crustorum decreased significantly. For further exploration, genes associated with metabolism were annotated through metagenomics. Limosilactobacillus, Companilactobacillus and Pediococcus were actively engaged in glycolysis (ko00010), starch and sucrose metabolism (ko00500), and pyruvate metabolism (ko00620), leading in part to lactic and acetic acid accumulations and dough acidification. Limosilactobacillus and Lactiplantibacillus were the main contributors to key aminopeptidases or/and transaminases involved in amino acid metabolism, which was responsible for flavor metabolite formation. This study will provide an enhanced understanding of the predominance and diversity of dough bacterial communities, and contribute to future strain screening in the dough for better flavor.

Objective To investigate the effect of artesunate (ART) on neuroinflammation in depressed mice by regulating the cyclic guanosine monophosphate-adenosine monophosphate synthase (cGAS)-stimulator of interferon gene (STING) pathway. Methods Mice were divided into model group, control group, low-dose ART group, high-dose ART group, fluoxetine group, and high-dose ART+RocA (cGAS-STING pathway activator) group. Sugar solution consumption experiment and forced swimming experiment were applied to evaluate the depressive behavior of mice; HE staining microscopy was applied to detect pathological changes in hippocampal tissue; ELISA method was applied to detect the level of interleukin-6(IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α), serotonin(5-HT) and dopamine (DA); TUNEL staining microscopy was applied to detect neuronal apoptosis; Western blot was applied to detect Bcl-2 associated X protein (Bax), p53, cGAS, and STING proteins. Results Compared to the control group, the mice in the model group exhibited neuronal pustule degeneration, the sugar water consumption rate, level of 5-HT and DA decreased, the rest time of forced swimming increased. The level of IL-6 and TNF-α, neuronal apoptosis rate, expression of Bax, p53, cGAS, and STING proteins all elevated (P＜0.05); Compared with model group, the damage to hippocampus neurons in the ART low-dose group, ART high-dose group and fluoxetine group neuronal pustular degeneration was alleviated, while sugar water consumption rate, 5-HT, and DA levels increased, the rest time of forced swimming reduced, the level of IL-6 and TNF-α, neuronal apoptosis rate and the expression of Bax, p53, cGAS, and STING proteins reduced (P＜0.05); RocA reversed the improvement effect of high-dose ART on depression in mice. Conclusions ART inhibits neuroinflammation and neuronal apoptosis in depressed mice, and up-regulates amine neurotransmitters expression. The mechanism is potentially related to the blocking of cGAS-STING pathway.

Abstract The human insulin gene modified with a C-peptide was synthesized according to the plant-preferred codon, and a fusion gene expression vector of insulin combined with green fluorescent protein (GFP) was constructed. The optimization of the flax callus culturing was undertaken, and a more efficient Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation of the flax hypocotyls was achieved. The critical concentration values of hygromycin on the flax hypocotyl development, as well as on its differentiated callus, were explored by the method of antibiotic gradient addition, and the application of antibiotic screening for the verification of positive calluses was assessed. The fusion gene of insulin and GFP was successfully inserted into the flax genome and expressed, as confirmed through polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting. In conclusion, we have established a flax callus culture system suitable for insulin expression. By optimizing the conditions of the flax callus induction, transformation, screening, and verification of a transgenic callus, we have provided an effective way to obtain insulin. Moreover, the herein-employed flax callus culture system could provide a feasible, cheap, and environmentally friendly platform for producing bioactive proteins. Graphical Abstract

Abstract Background Retroperitoneal liposarcoma (RPLPS) is a relatively rare disease. Liposarcomas vary in size, but sizeable RPLPS larger than 30 cm in diameter are very rare, and their diagnosis and treatment present significant challenges. Case presentation We report a 58-year-old male patient who was admitted to the hospital with an increased abdominal circumference and was later diagnosed with a giant RPLPS. The liposarcoma was found to adhere to the right kidney and the entire ureter, invading the ascending colon. The patient underwent complete combined surgical resection. The tumor was removed intact, measured 55.0 cm × 30.0 cm × 18.0 cm, and weighed 19.8 kg. Histopathologic analysis revealed well-differentiated liposarcoma (WDLPS). The patient was successfully discharged from the hospital and followed up for 6 months with no signs of recurrence. Conclusion RPLPS is a rare tumor with atypical clinical presentation. Surgery remains the most effective method of treatment for retroperitoneal sarcomas, with complete removal if there is local invasion. Preoperative examination, including three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction, is essential for surgical success. The role of adjuvant radiotherapy or chemotherapy remains controversial. However, clinicians should not rule them out as viable options.

Abstract Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology bridges the direct communication between the brain and machines, unlocking new possibilities for human interaction and rehabilitation. EEG-based motor imagery (MI) plays a pivotal role in BCI, enabling the translation of thought into actionable commands for interactive and assistive technologies. However, the constrained decoding performance of brain signals poses a limitation to the broader application and development of BCI systems. In this study, we introduce a convolutional Transformer network (CTNet) designed for EEG-based MI classification. Firstly, CTNet employs a convolutional module analogous to EEGNet, dedicated to extracting local and spatial features from EEG time series. Subsequently, it incorporates a Transformer encoder module, leveraging a multi-head attention mechanism to discern the global dependencies of EEG's high-level features. Finally, a straightforward classifier module comprising fully connected layers is followed to categorize EEG signals. In subject-specific evaluations, CTNet achieved remarkable decoding accuracies of 82.52% and 88.49% on the BCI IV-2a and IV-2b datasets, respectively. Furthermore, in the challenging cross-subject assessments, CTNet achieved recognition accuracies of 58.64% on the BCI IV-2a dataset and 76.27% on the BCI IV-2b dataset. In both subject-specific and cross-subject evaluations, CTNet holds a leading position when compared to some of the state-of-the-art methods. This underscores the exceptional efficacy of our approach and its potential to set a new benchmark in EEG decoding.

Abstract Background Early detection of colorectal cancer (CRC) significantly enhances patient outcomes. Conventional CRC screening tools, like endoscopy and stool-based tests, have constraints due to their invasiveness or suboptimal patient adherence. Recently, liquid biopsy employing plasma cell-free DNA (cfDNA) has emerged as a potential noninvasive screening technique for various malignancies. Methods In this research, we harnessed the Mutation Capsule Plus (MCP) technology to profile an array of genomic characteristics from cfDNA procured from a single blood draw. This profiling encompassed DNA methylation, the 5’ end motif, copy number variation (CNV), and genetic mutations. An integrated model built upon selected multiomics biomarkers was trained using a cohort of 93 CRC patients and 96 healthy controls. Results This model was subsequently validated in another cohort comprising 89 CRC patients and 95 healthy controls. Remarkably, the model achieved an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.981 (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.965–0.998) in the validation set, boasting a sensitivity of 92.1% (95% CI, 84.5%-96.8%) and a specificity of 94.7% (95% CI, 88.1%-98.3%). These numbers surpassed the performance of any single genomic feature. Importantly, the sensitivities reached 80% for stage I, 89.2% for stage II, and were 100% for stages III and IV. Conclusion Our findings underscore the clinical potential of our multiomics liquid biopsy test, indicating its prospective role as a noninvasive method for early-stage CRC detection. This multiomics approach holds promise for further refinement and broader clinical application.

Abstract Risky lane-changing (LC) behavior adversely affects traffic safety, especially on snowy and icy surfaces. However, due to the particularity of the snowy and icy surfaces and the scarcity of data, research on risky lane-changing behavior (RLCB) under extreme scenarios is insufficient. Therefore, this study presents a novel research framework aimed at selecting key risk characterization indicators (RCIs) and identifying RLCB on highways using driving simulation data on snowy and icy surfaces. A highway LC scenario was established on snowy and icy surfaces using a driving simulator, and 1200 sets of LC sample data were extracted. From the perspectives of parameter importance and correlation, 12 key RCIs with high importance and low inter-correlation were selected using the C4.5 decision tree algorithm and Pearson correlation analysis method. The RLCB recognition model was developed using the Stacking ensemble learning method and then compared with traditional recognition algorithms. The results show that the accuracy of the recognition model based on the Stacking ensemble learning model is significantly better than that of traditional algorithms, with a recognition accuracy of 98.33%. This finding can provide the basis for developing LC warning systems for intelligent connected vehicles on snowy and icy surfaces.

Abstract Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurological disorder that primarily impacts cognitive function. Currently there are no disease-modifying treatments to stop or slow its progression. Recent studies have found that several peripheral and systemic abnormalities are associated with AD, and our understanding of how these alterations contribute to AD is becoming more apparent. In this review, we focuse on amyloid‑beta (Aβ), a major hallmark of AD, summarizing recent findings on the source of brain-derived Aβ and discussing where and how the brain-derived Aβ is cleared in vivo. Based on these findings, we propose future strategies for AD prevention and treatment, from a novel perspective on Aβ metabolism.

Abstract The existence of striations, and scratches in Abrasive waterjet (AWJ) cutting surface necessitates an exploration of these features for enhancing the cutting accuracy of AWJ machining. This article investigates surface roughness and micro-scratch morphology characteristics on brass cutting surfaces. According to the variation law of surface roughness values, the cutting section can be divided into three regions: the initial region, smooth region, and rough region. Numerous micron-scale scratches were observed in the cutting section. The scratch length, width, and depth values all show an increasing trend as the cutting depth increases, with the scratch length experiencing the greatest growth and variability. The influence of position and traverse speed on scratch size was studied using variance analysis. Furthermore, the length and width of the scratches on the cutting surface are significantly influenced by their position, accounting for 89.19% and 81.13%, respectively. Traverse speed had a minor effect on scratch length and width, accounting for 0.01% and 2.64% respectively. The depth of the scratches is influenced by their position on the cutting surface at a rate of 41.12%, while traverse speed had an impact of 38.10%. Finally, a mathematical method based on standard scores was proposed to assess the quality of the cutting section based on micro-scratch dimension.

Abstract Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDV) poses a significant threat to neonatal piglets, particularly due to the limited efficacy of existing vaccines and the scarcity of efficacious therapeutic drugs. Gegen Qinlian Decoction (GQD) has been employed for over two millennia in treating infectious diarrhea. Nonetheless, further scrutiny is required to improve the drug’s efficacy and elucidate its underlying mechanisms of action. In this study, a modified GQD (MGQD) was developed and demonstrated its capacity to inhibit the replication of PEDV. Animal trials indicated that MGQD effectively alleviated pathological damage in immune tissues and modulated T-lymphocyte subsets. The integration of network analysis with UHPLC-MS/MS facilitated the identification of active ingredients within MGQD and elucidated the molecular mechanisms underlying its therapeutic effects against PEDV infections. In vitro studies revealed that MGQD significantly impeded PEDV proliferation in IPEC-J2 cells, promoting cellular growth via virucidal activity, inhibition of viral attachment, and disruption of viral biosynthesis. Furthermore, MGQD treatment led to increased expression levels of IFN-α, IFN-β, and IFN-λ3, while concurrently decreasing the expression of TNF-α, thereby enhancing resistance to PEDV infection in IPEC-J2 cells. In conclusion, our findings suggest that MGQD holds promise as a novel antiviral agent for the treatment of PEDV infections.

Abstract Nanosizing confers unique functions in materials such as graphene and quantum dots. Here, we present two nanoscale-covalent organic frameworks (nano-COFs) that exhibit exceptionally high activity for photocatalytic hydrogen production that results from their size and morphology. Compared to bulk analogues, the downsizing of COFs crystals using surfactants provides greatly improved water dispersibility and light-harvesting properties. One of these nano-COFs shows a hydrogen evolution rate of 392.0 mmol g−1 h−1 (33.3 μmol h−1), which is one of the highest mass-normalized rates reported for a COF or any other organic photocatalysts. A reverse concentration-dependent photocatalytic phenomenon is observed, whereby a higher photocatalytic activity is found at a lower catalyst concentration. These materials also show a molecule-like excitonic nature, as studied by photoluminescence and transient absorption spectroscopy, which is again a function of their nanoscale dimensions. This charts a new path to highly efficient organic photocatalysts for solar fuel production.

Abstract Background This study introduced an Augmented Reality (AR) navigation system to address limitations in conventional high tibial osteotomy (HTO). The objective was to enhance precision and efficiency in HTO procedures, overcoming challenges such as inconsistent postoperative alignment and potential neurovascular damage. Methods The AR-MR (Mixed Reality) navigation system, comprising HoloLens, Unity Engine, and Vuforia software, was employed for pre-clinical trials using tibial sawbone models. CT images generated 3D anatomical models, projected via HoloLens, allowing surgeons to interact through intuitive hand gestures. The critical procedure of target tracking, essential for aligning virtual and real objects, was facilitated by Vuforia’s feature detection algorithm. Results In trials, the AR-MR system demonstrated significant reductions in both preoperative planning and intraoperative times compared to conventional navigation and metal 3D-printed surgical guides. The AR system, while exhibiting lower accuracy, exhibited efficiency, making it a promising option for HTO procedures. The preoperative planning time for the AR system was notably shorter (4 min) compared to conventional navigation (30.5 min) and metal guides (75.5 min). Intraoperative time for AR lasted 8.5 min, considerably faster than that of conventional navigation (31.5 min) and metal guides (10.5 min). Conclusions The AR navigation system presents a transformative approach to HTO, offering a trade-off between accuracy and efficiency. Ongoing improvements, such as the incorporation of two-stage registration and pointing devices, could further enhance precision. While the system may be less accurate, its efficiency renders it a potential breakthrough in orthopedic surgery, particularly for reducing unnecessary harm and streamlining surgical procedures.

Currently, colorectal cancer has the third highest incidence worldwide. As its incidence is increasing, focus on quality of life after laparoscopic radical resection for colorectal cancer has also increased. This study aimed to compare the effects of retention or resection of the Denonvilliers'fascia on urinary and sexual functions in men who underwent laparoscopic radical resection for rectal cancer. Relevant national and international literature databases, including China Knowledge Network, PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Excerpta Medica Database, were searched according to the established retrieval scheme. Review Manager 5.3 was used to analyze data, and the correct effect model was selected based on heterogeneity. In total, 22 studies involving 2255 patients were included in the meta-analysis. The studies were categorized into the experimental and control groups. The incidence of urinary dysfunction was lower in the experimental group than in the control group at 1 and 6 months postoperatively. In terms of sexual function, the experimental group had lower rates of erectile and ejaculatory dysfunctions than the control group at 1, 3, and 6 months and 1 year postoperatively. However, the experimental group had a longer operation time than the control group. No significant differences in incidence of postoperative complications, intra-operative blood loss, and number of lymph nodes dissections were observed between the two groups. Overall, laparoscopic radical resection for rectal cancer with preservation of the Denonvilliers' fascia has been proven effective in improving postoperative urinary and sexual functions in men without affecting the number of lymph nodes dissected and enhancing postoperative quality of life.

AIM: To analyze the distribution of fibrovascular proliferative membranes (FVPMs) in proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) patients that treated with pars plana vitrectomy (PPV), and to evaluate the outcomes separately. METHODS: This was a retrospective and cross-sectional study. Consecutive 25-gauge (25-G) PPV cases operated for PDR from May 2018 to April 2020. According to the FVPMs images outlined after operations, subjects were assigned into three groups: arcade type group, juxtapapillary type group, and central type group. The aim of this consensus is to standardize the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of chronic hepatitis B in children and to achieve the goal of “eliminating viral hepatitis as a major public health threat by 2030” issued by the World Health Organization. Formulated by organized experts of the Chinese Society of Infectious Diseases and Chinese Society of Hepatology, Chinese Medical Association; Group of Infectious Diseases, Chinese Pediatric Society, Chinese Medical Association; and the National Clinical Research Center for Infectious Diseases (Beijing), the consensus provides the latest evidence and recommendations for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of chronic hepatitis B in children.

Abstract The dynamic load distribution within in-service axlebox bearings of high-speed trains is crucial for the fatigue reliability assessment and forward design of axlebox bearings. This paper presents an in situ measurement of the dynamic load distribution in the four rows of two axlebox bearings on a bogie wheelset of a high-speed train under polygonal wheel–rail excitation. The measurement employed an improved strain-based method to measure the dynamic radial load distribution of roller bearings. The four rows of two axlebox bearings on a wheelset exhibited different ranges of loaded zones and different means of distributed loads. Besides, the mean value and standard deviation of measured roller–raceway contact loads showed non-monotonic variations with the frequency of wheel–rail excitation. The fatigue life of the four bearing rows under polygonal wheel–rail excitation was quantitatively predicted by compiling the measured roller–raceway contact load spectra of the most loaded position and considering the load spectra as input.

An inductively coupled plasma triple quadrupole mass spectrometric (ICP-QQQ-MS) method was established for the determination of cadmium (Cd) in cereal-based complementary foods for infants and young children. In different collision/reaction modes, namely single quadrupole-helium collision (SQ-He), double quadrupole-helium collision (QQQ-He) and double quadrupole-oxygen reaction (QQQ-O2), various possible interferences in the MS measurement process were analyzed and several methods to eliminate them were proposed. The results showed that the decreasing order of the ability to resist matrix, oxide and multiatomic ion interferences was QQQ-O2 > QQQ-He > SQ-He. QQQ-O2 combined with the standard addition method showed a better ability to eliminate interference. By introducing interference correction equations, the problem of inconsistency between Cd isotope abundance ratio and natural abundance ratio caused by interference from stannum (Sn) isotopes was effectively solved. The results of Cd determination by isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS) in the QQQ-O2 mode were consistent with those obtained using the standard addition method, indicating effective elimination of both matrix effect and MS interference. The proposed ICP-QQQ-MS method allows the accuracy determination of Cd in complex matrix samples.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of feeding patterns during the first 6 months on weight development of infants ages 0–12 months. Using monitoring data from the Maternal and Child Health Project conducted by the National Center for Women and Children’s Health of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention from September 2015 to June 2019, we categorized feeding patterns during the first 6 months as exclusive breastfeeding, formula feeding, or mixed feeding. We calculated weight-for-age Z scores (WAZ) according to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) 2006 Child Growth Standard using WHO Anthro version 3.2.2. A multilevel model was used to analyze the effect of feeding patterns during the first 6 months on the WAZ of infants ages 0–12 months in monitoring regions. Length of follow-up (age of infants) was assigned to level 1, and infants was assigned to level 2. Characteristics of infants, mothers, and families and region of the country were adjusted for in the model. The average weight of infants ages 0–12 months in our study (except the birth weights of boys who were formula fed or mixed fed) was greater than the WHO growth standard. Combining photodynamic therapy (PDT) with chemodynamic therapy (CDT) has been proven to be a promising strategy to improve the treatment efficiency of cancer, because of the synergistic therapeutic effect arising between the two modalities. Herein, we report an inorganic nanoagent based on ternary NiCoTi-layered double hydroxide (NiCoTi-LDH) nanosheets to realize highly efficient photodynamic/chemodynamic synergistic therapy. The NiCoTi-LDH nanosheets exhibit oxygen vacancy-promoted electron-hole separation and photogenerated hole-induced O2-independent reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation under acidic circumstances, realizing in situ pH-responsive PDT. Moreover, due to the effective conversion between Co3+ and Co2+ caused by photogenerated electrons, the NiCoTi-LDH nanosheets catalyze the release of hydroxyl radicals (·OH) from H2O2 through Fenton reactions, resulting in CDT. Laser irradiation enhances the catalyzed ability of the NiCoTi-LDH nanosheets to promote the ROS generation, resulting in a better performance than TiO2 nanoparticles at pH 6.5. In vitro and in vivo experimental results show conclusively that NiCoTi-LDH nanosheets plus irradiation lead to efficient cell apoptosis and significant inhibition of tumor growth. This study reports a new pH-responsive inorganic nanoagent with oxygen vacancy-promoted photodynamic/chemodynamic synergistic performance, offering a potentially appealing clinical strategy for selective tumor elimination.

Abstract Two prevalent ecological mechanisms, niche dimensionality and light asymmetry, may well explain species loss with fertilization gradients in grassland communities. Although there is still controversy surrounding the two competitive mechanisms that maintain species coexistence, few studies have examined the patterns of change in dissimilarity in species composition (β-diversity) and the relative explanatory contributions of plant functional traits to α- and β-diversity when multiple resources are added. To clarify this knowledge gap, we conducted a 6-year experiment of resource addition in an alpine meadow on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to assess how species richness and spatial β-diversity are affected by increasing numbers of added resources (NAR) and light limitation. Our results found that both NAR and light limitation led to decreased species richness, suggesting that niche dimensionality and light asymmetry may contribute equally to species loss, rather than either alone. Moreover, NAR is the primary factor responsible for the increase in β-diversity, which exhibits a negative relationship with species richness. Furthermore, the increase in height is the most likely explanation for β-diversity, while the increase in SLA is the most likely explanation for species richness, thereby indicating the changes in species richness and composition can be effectively explained by the response of certain morphological functional traits with the addition of multiple resources. Future research should focus on the complex interactions of different ecological mechanisms that contribute to the maintenance of biodiversity in grassland ecosystems all over the world.

Abstract Evolution of SARS-CoV-2 variants emphasizes the need for multivalent vaccines capable of simultaneously targeting multiple strains. SCTV01E is a tetravalent COVID-19 vaccine derived from the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 variants Alpha, Beta, Delta, and Omicron BA.1. In this double-blinded placebo-controlled pivotal efficacy trial (NCT05308576), the primary endpoint was vaccine efficacy (VE) against COVID-19 seven days post-vaccination in individuals without recent infection. Other endpoints included evaluating safety, immunogenicity, and the VE against all SARS-CoV-2 infections in individuals meeting the study criteria. Between December 26, 2022, and January 15, 2023, 9,223 individuals were randomized at a 1:1 ratio to receive SCTV01E or a placebo. SCTV01E showed a VE of 69.4% (95% CI: 50.6, 81.0) 7 days post-vaccination, with 75 cases in the placebo group and 23 in the SCTV01E group for the primary endpoint. VEs were 79.7% (95% CI: 51.0, 91.6) and 82.4% (95% CI: 57.9, 92.6), respectively, for preventing symptomatic infection and all SARS-CoV-2 infections 14 days post-vaccination. SCTV01E elicited a 25.0-fold higher neutralizing antibody response against Omicron BA.5 28 days post-vaccination compared to placebo. Reactogenicity was generally mild and transient, with no reported vaccine-related SAE, adverse events of special interest (AESI), or deaths. The trial aligned with the shift from dominant variants BA.5 and BF.7 to XBB, suggesting SCTV01E as a potential vaccine alternative effective against present and future variants.

Abstract High areal capacity and low-temperature ability are critical for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the practical operation is seriously impeded by the sluggish rates of mass and charge transfer. Herein, the active electronic states of TiNb2O7 material is modulated by dopant and O-vacancies for enhanced low-temperature dynamics. Femtosecond laser-based transient absorption spectroscopy is employed to depict carrier dynamics of TiNb2O7, which verifies the localized structure polarization accounting for reduced transport overpotential, facilitated electron/ion transport, and improved Li+ adsorption. At high-mass loading of 10 mg cm−2 and −30 °C, TNO-x @N microflowers exhibit stable cycling performance with 92.9% capacity retention over 250 cycles at 1 C (1.0-3.0 V, 1 C = 250 mA g−1). Even at −40 °C, a competitive areal capacity of 1.32 mAh cm−2 can be achieved. Such a fundamental understanding of the intrinsic structure-function put forward a rational viewpoint for designing high-areal-capacity batteries in cold regions.

Abstract Ultrasound-based shear wave elastography (SWE) can non-invasively assess prostate tissue stiffness for the diagnosis of prostate cancer (PCa). So far, there is no widely recognized standard for the detection process and calculation method of Young’s modulus value in transrectal SWE ultrasound imaging (TSWEUI). In our study, the mean maximum Young’s modulus value (m-Emax) of the maximum cross-section of prostate is obtained by calculating the mean of 12 measured Emax in the four quadrants. This retrospective study included 209 suspected malignant prostate disease patients with pathological results in our hospital. Among the 209 patients, 75 patients completed TSWEUI, and 63 of the 75 patients completed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) of 75 patients for m-Emax was 0.754. The prostate volume, prostate-specific antigen, and m-Emax were used to develop a nomogram (AUC = 0.868). The nomogram could effectively predict the probability of PCa, thereby reducing the needle biopsy rate for diagnosing PCa. The AUC of 63 patients was not statistically different between m-Emax (AUC = 0.717) and MRI (AUC = 0.787) (P = 0.361). These indicate that m-Emax can be used as an innovative parameter in TSWEUI to diagnosis PCa. TSWEUI is more cost-effective than MRI in diagnosing PCa.

This study evaluated the protein identification capabilities of the Top14 high-abundance protein removal kit (Top14) and the DMB MagicOmics low-abundance enrichment kit (DMB) on serum samples from healthy individuals (HC) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. For HC samples, DMB treatment led to identifying 2.6 times proteins more than Top14 and 3.9 times more than untreated samples. For HCC samples, DMB achieved 3.7 times increase in protein identification over Top14 and 6.2 times increase over untreated samples. Although the Top14 kit was effective in removing high-abundance proteins, it was less proficient in detecting low-abundance proteins when compared to the DMB method. In terms of protein identification frequency, the DMB-treated samples had a significantly higher number of quantifiable proteins than both the Top14 and Blank groups. Over 50% of the proteins identified in the Top14 and Blank groups were also identified in the DMB group, ensuring a comprehensive proteome coverage as evidenced by KEGG analysis. The DMB method significantly outperformed the others in HCC serum samples, identifying 47 differentially expressed (DE) proteins, in contrast to 15 and 17 identified of the Top14 group and untreated samples, respectively, highlighting its superior ability to uncover critical biomarkers for disease analysis. KEGG pathway analysis showed that DE proteins identified by DMB were involved in 21 distinct pathways, significantly more than 5 and 1 pathways identified by Top14 group and untreated samples, demonstrating DMB’s advanced proteomic profiling capability. This study also underscored HSP90AB1, SPP1, ACTR3, SNCA, PECAM1, and SRC proteins increased in HCC serum samples based on DMB method, marking them as promising HCC biomarkers for disease screening.

Abstract Background The average daily gain (ADG) of preweaning calves significantly influences their adult productivity and reproductive performance. Gastrointestinal microbes are known to exert an impact on host phenotypes, including ADG. The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanisms by which gastrointestinal microbiome regulate ADG in preweaning calves and to further validate them by isolating ADG-associated rumen microbes in vitro. Results Sixteen Holstein heifer calves were selected from a cohort with 106 calves and divided into higher ADG (HADG; n = 8) and lower ADG (LADG; n = 8) groups. On the day of weaning, samples of rumen contents, hindgut contents, and plasma were collected for rumen metagenomics, rumen metabolomics, hindgut metagenomics, hindgut metabolomics, and plasma metabolomics analyses. Subsequently, rumen contents of preweaning Holstein heifer calves from the same dairy farm were collected to isolate ADG-associated rumen microbes. The results showed that the rumen microbes, including Pyramidobacter sp. C12-8, Pyramidobacter sp. CG50-2, Pyramidobacter porci, unclassified_g_Pyramidobacter, Pyramidobacter piscolens, and Acidaminococcus fermentans, were enriched in the rumen of HADG calves (LDA > 2, P 0.50, P

Abstract Background The heightened risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events is associated with the increased instability of atherosclerotic plaques. However, the lack of effective diagnostic biomarkers has impeded the assessment of plaque instability currently. This study was aimed to investigate and identify hub genes associated with unstable plaques through the integration of various bioinformatics tools, providing novel insights into the detection and treatment of this condition. Methods Weighted Gene Co-expression Network Analysis (WGCNA) combined with two machine learning methods were used to identify hub genes strongly associated with plaque instability. The cell-type identification by estimating relative subsets of RNA transcripts (CIBERSORT) method was utilized to assess immune cell infiltration patterns in atherosclerosis patients. Additionally, Gene Set Variation Analysis (GSVA) was conducted to investigate the potential biological functions, pathways, and mechanisms of hub genes associated with unstable plaques. To further validate the diagnostic efficiency and expression of the hub genes, immunohistochemistry (IHC), quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were performed on collected human carotid plaque and blood samples. Immunofluorescence co-staining was also utilized to confirm the association between hub genes and immune cells, as well as their colocalization with mitochondria. Results The CIBERSORT analysis demonstrated a significant decrease in the infiltration of CD8 T cells and an obvious increase in the infiltration of M0 macrophages in patients with atherosclerosis. Subsequently, two highly relevant modules (blue and green) strongly associated with atherosclerotic plaque instability were identified. Through intersection with mitochondria-related genes, 50 crucial genes were identified. Further analysis employing least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) logistic regression and support vector machine recursive feature elimination (SVM-RFE) algorithms revealed six hub genes significantly associated with plaque instability. Among them, NT5DC3, ACADL, SLC25A4, ALDH1B1, and MAOB exhibited positive correlations with CD8 T cells and negative correlations with M0 macrophages, while kynurenine 3-monooxygenas (KMO) demonstrated a positive correlation with M0 macrophages and a negative correlation with CD8 T cells. IHC and RT-qPCR analyses of human carotid plaque samples, as well as ELISA analyses of blood samples, revealed significant upregulation of KMO and MAOB expression, along with decreased ALDH1B1 expression, in both stable and unstable samples compared to the control samples. However, among the three key genes mentioned above, only KMO showed a significant increase in expression in unstable plaque samples compared to stable plaque samples. Furthermore, the expression patterns of KMO in human carotid unstable plaque tissues and cultured mouse macrophage cell lines were assessed using immunofluorescence co-staining techniques. Finally, lentivirus-mediated KMO silencing was successfully transduced into the aortas of high-fat-fed ApoE-/- mice, with results indicating that KMO silencing attenuated plaque formation and promoted plaque stability in ApoE-/- mice. Conclusions The results suggest that KMO, a mitochondria-targeted gene associated with macrophage cells, holds promise as a valuable diagnostic biomarker for assessing the instability of atherosclerotic plaques.

Abstract Vascularization plays a significant role in promoting the expedited process of bone regeneration while also enhancing the stability and viability of artificial bone implants. Although titanium alloy scaffolds were designed to mimic the porous structure of human bone tissues to facilitate vascularization in bone repair, their biological inertness restricted their broader utilization. The unique attribute of Metal-organic framework (MOF) MIL-53(Fe), known as “breathing”, can facilitate the efficient adsorption of extracellular matrix proteins and thus provide the possibility for efficient interaction between scaffolds and cell adhesion molecules, which helps improve the bioactivity of the titanium alloy scaffolds. In this study, MIL-53(Fe) was synthesized in situ on the scaffold after hydrothermal treatment. The MIL-53(Fe) endowed the scaffold with superior protein absorption ability and preferable biocompatibility. The scaffolds have been shown to possess favorable osteogenesis and angiogenesis inducibility. It was indicated that MIL-53(Fe) modulated the mechanotransduction process of endothelial cells and induced increased cell stiffness by promoting the adsorption of adhesion-mediating extracellular matrix proteins to the scaffold, such as laminin, fibronectin, and perlecan et al., which contributed to the activation of the endothelial tip cell phenotype at sprouting angiogenesis. Therefore, this study effectively leveraged the intrinsic “breathing” properties of MIL-53 (Fe) to enhance the interaction between titanium alloy scaffolds and vascular endothelial cells, thereby facilitating the vascularization inducibility of the scaffold, particularly during the sprouting angiogenesis phase. This study indicates that MIL-53(Fe) coating represents a promising strategy to facilitate accelerated and sufficient vascularization and uncovers the scaffold-vessel interaction from a biomechanical perspective. Abstract Underwater sensor networks hold immense potential for advancing the field of underwater target tracking, yet they encounter significant resource constraints stemming from energy storage and communication methods. In order to balance tracking accuracy and energy consumption, the authors present a distributed bearing‐only target tracking algorithm that can be used in underwater sensor networks with resource constraints. Anchored in the diffusion cubature information filter framework, this algorithm achieves fusion for non‐linear bearing measurements and state estimation. During the incremental update stage, individual nodes leverage the Posterior Cramer‐Rao Lower Bound as a metric for tracking performance. Subsequently, a strategy for selecting neighbouring nodes is introduced, ensuring tracking accuracy while efficiently kerbing energy consumption. In the diffusion update stage, a multi‐threshold event triggering mechanism is employed to partially diffuse the intermediate estimation. Additionally, an adaptive convex combination weight is proposed for cases involving partial diffusion. Through theoretical analysis, the asymptotic unbiasedness and convergence of the algorithm have been proven. Through Monte Carlo simulation experiments, the authors verify that the algorithm is superior to existing algorithms. Furthermore, the algorithm significantly reduces energy consumption in information interaction, minimising tracking accuracy loss.

Abstract Background Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) was associated with the increased cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality. And anti-inflammatory dietary has potential to improve the prognosis of OSA. This study aimed to investigate the association of anti-inflammatory dietary patterns with all-cause mortality among individuals with OSA. Methods This retrospective cohort study involved 1522 older adults with OSA from 2005 to 2008 in the National Health and Nutrition Examinations Survey (NHANES). Mortality status was determined by routine follow-up through December 31, 2019, using the National Death Index. Anti-inflammatory dietary patterns included Alternate Mediterranean Diet Score (aMED), Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015), and Alternate Healthy Eating Index-2010 (AHEI-2010). Weighted Cox proportional hazard regression models were performed to investigate the association between anti-inflammatory dietary pattern and all-cause mortality. Results After a median follow-up of 131 months, 604 participants were recorded all-cause mortality. The mean age of OSA patients was 68.99 years old, of whom 859 were male (52.34%). Higher adherence of aMED (HR = 0.61, 95%CI: 0.48 to 0.78) and HEI-2015 (HR = 0.75, 95%CI: 0.60 to 0.95) were associated with lower all-cause mortality risk in the elderly with OSA. Conversely, no association was found between AHEI-2010 dietary pattern and all-cause mortality in individuals with OSA. In the component analysis of aMED, it was found that a higher intake of vegetables and olive oil potentially contributes to the reduction all-cause mortality risk in the elderly with OSA (HR = 0.60, 95%CI: 0.48 to 0.76; HR = 0.67, 95%CI: 0.63 to 0.71). Conclusion Higher adherence to the aMED and the HEI-2015 was associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality in OSA. Future interventions in the elderly with OSA should considering adopting anti-inflammatory dietary patterns.

Abstract Objective To compare the treatment outcomes among percutaneous mechanical thrombectomy (PMT) with AngioJet, Catheter-directed thrombolysis (CDT), and a combination of both. Methods One hundred forty nine patients with acute or sub-acute iliac-femoral vein thrombosis accepting CDT and/or PMT were divided into three groups respectively: PMT group, CDT group, PMT + CDT group (PMT followed by CDT). The severity of thrombosis was evaluated by venographic scoring system. Technical success was defined as restored patent deep venous blood flow after CDT and/or PMT. Clinical follow-up were assessed by ultrasound or venography imaging. The primary endpoints were recurrence of DVT, and severity level of post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) during the follow-up. Results Technical success and immediate clinical improvements were achieved on all patients. The residual polyacrylamide (PAM) in treated mineral processing wastewater affects the quality of recycled water and its potential for reuse. Continuous circulation and accumulation of cations in mineral processing wastewater can also influence the chemical properties and flocculating performance of PAM. In this study, a rapid detection method for low detection limit and concentration of PAM was proposed. The ultraviolet absorption spectra of four types and different molecular weights of PAM were collected in the wavelength range of 190–300 nm. The sensitivity and detection limits of this ultraviolet spectral method of PAM were verified. The effects of different K+ and Ca2+ concentrations on the detection of PAM concentration were examined. Change in the PAM molecular conformation was analyzed using atomic force microscopy. The findings demonstrated that for the four polymers, the highest absorbance was recorded at 194 nm. There was a strong linear relationship between PAM concentration and absorbance (R2>0.98). The limit of detection was lower than 0.1 mg·L−1. This method showed high detection sensitivity. However, the linear relationship between concentration and absorbance was affected by the type of PAM used. With increasing K+ and Ca2+ concentrations, the intensity of the absorbance characteristic peak of the PAM solution was reduced. The maximum absorption wavelength was continuously red-shifted. In addition, when the K+ and Ca2+ concentrations were greater than 50 and 5 mmol·L−1, respectively. The intensity of the characteristic absorbance peak gradually decreased. In deionized water, the surface roughness (Rq) values of APAM-3 and CPAM-12 deposited on SiO2 and Au substrates were 24.3 and 38.1 nm, respectively. When the K+ and Ca2+ concentrations increased from 10 and 1 mmol·L−1 to 100 and 10 mmol·L−1, Rq increased from 80.4 and 120.0 nm to 124.0 and 145.0 nm, respectively. In the morphology map, the molecular chains of PAM transformed from linear dendrites to point blocky structures. It was demonstrated that the conformation of PAM chains in solution gradually became curled, resulting in a decrease in the peak intensity of the characteristic UV absorption spectrum. The effect of 10 and 100 mmol·L−1 K+ and 1 and 10 mmol·L−1 Ca2+ on the conformational change of PAM was essentially the same degree. The effects of typical monovalent and bivalent cations (K+ and Ca2+) on the molecular conformation of PAM were in alignment with the findings of their UV absorption spectra. In this study, the rapid and accurate quantitative detection of PAM is critical for exploring its migration behavior in mineral processing water treatment.
