We present adaptive optics (AO) assisted integral-field spectroscopy of the intermediate-age star cluster NGC 419 in the Small Magellanic Cloud. By investigating the cluster dynamics and the rotation properties of main sequence turn-off stars (MSTO), we demonstrate the power of AO-fed MUSE observations for this class of objects. Based on 1 049 radial velocity measurements, we determine a dynamical cluster mass of 1.4+/-0.2x10^5 M_sun and a dynamical mass-to-light ratio of 0.67+/-0.08, marginally higher than simple stellar population predictions for a Kroupa initial mass function. A stacking analysis of spectra at both sides of the extended MSTO reveals significant rotational broadening. Our analysis further provides tentative evidence that red MSTO stars rotate faster than their blue counterparts. We find average V sin i values of 87+/-16 km/s and 130+/-22 km/s for blue and red MSTO stars, respectively. Potential systematic effects due to the low spectral resolution of MUSE can reach 30 km/s but the difference in V sin i between the populations is unlikely to be affected., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

Aims. As a new approach to the study of resolved stellar populations in nearby galaxies, our goal is to demonstrate in NGC300 that integral field spectroscopy with high spatial resolution and excellent seeing conditions reaches an unprecedented depth in severely crowded fields. Methods. MUSE observations with seven pointings in NGC300 have resulted in datacubes that are analyzed in four ways: (1) PSF-fitting 3D spectroscopy with PampelMUSE yields deblended spectra of individually distinguishable stars. The technique also provides samples of planetary nebulae that are complete down to m5007=28. (2) pseudo-monochromatic images, created at the wavelengths of the most important emission lines and corrected for continuum light by using the P3D visualization tool, provide maps of HII regions, SNR, and the diffuse ISM at a high level of sensitivity, allowing for the discovery of planetary nebulae, WR stars etc. (3) The use of the P3D line-fitting tool yields emission line fluxes, surface brightness, and kinematic information for gaseous objects, corrected for absorption line profiles of the underlying stellar population. (4) Visual inspection of the datacubes is demonstrated to be effcient for data mining and the discovery of background galaxies and unusual objects. Results. We present a catalogue of luminous stars, rare stars such as WR and other emission line stars, carbon stars, symbiotic star candidates, planetary nebulae, HII regions, supernova remnants, giant shells, peculiar diffuse and filamentary emission line objects, and background galaxies, along with their spectra. Conclusions. The technique of crowded-field 3D spectroscopy is capable of deblending individual bright stars, the unresolved background of faint stars, gaseous nebulae, and the diffuse component of the interstellar medium, resulting in unprecedented legacy value for observations of nearby galaxies with MUSE., Comment: 37 pages, 27 figures. Galaxies at low-redshift typically possess negative gas-phase metallicity gradients (centres more metal-rich than their outskirts). Whereas, it is not uncommon to observe positive metallicity gradients in higher-redshift galaxies ($z \gtrsim 0.6$). Bridging these epochs, we present gas-phase metallicity gradients of 84 star-forming galaxies between $0.08 < z < 0.84$. Using the galaxies with reliably determined metallicity gradients, we measure the median metallicity gradient to be negative ($-0.039^{+0.007}_{-0.009}$ dex/kpc). Underlying this, however, is significant scatter: $(8\pm3)\%\ [7]$ of galaxies have significantly positive metallicity gradients, $(38 \pm 5)\%\ [32]$ have significantly negative gradients, $(31\pm5)\%\ [26]$ have gradients consistent with being flat. (The remaining $(23\pm5)\%\ [19]$ have unreliable gradient estimates.) We notice a slight trend for a more negative metallicity gradient with both increasing stellar mass and increasing star formation rate (SFR). However, given the potential redshift and size selection effects, we do not consider these trends to be significant. Indeed, once we normalize the SFR relative to that of the main sequence, we do not observe any trend between the metallicity gradient and the normalized SFR. This is contrary to recent studies of galaxies at similar and higher redshifts. We do, however, identify a novel trend between the metallicity gradient of a galaxy and its size. Small galaxies ($r_d < 3$ kpc) present a large spread in observed metallicity gradients (both negative and positive gradients). In contrast, we find no large galaxies ($r_d > 3$ kpc) with positive metallicity gradients, and overall there is less scatter in the metallicity gradient amongst the large galaxies. We analyse a sample of 8 highly magnified galaxies at redshift 0.6

We present the stellar velocity maps of 25 massive early type galaxies located in dense environments observed with MUSE. Galaxies are selected to be brighter than M_K=-25.7 magnitude, reside in the core of the Shapley Super Cluster or be the brightest galaxy in clusters richer than the Virgo Cluster. We thus targeted galaxies more massive than 10^12 Msun and larger than 10 kpc (half-light radius). The velocity maps show a large variety of kinematic features: oblate-like regular rotation, kinematically distinct cores and various types of non-regular rotation. The kinematic misalignment angles show that massive galaxies can be divided into two categories: those with small or negligible misalignment, and those with misalignment consistent with being 90 degrees. Galaxies in this latter group, comprising just under half of our galaxies, have prolate-like rotation (rotation around the major axis). Among the brightest cluster galaxies the incidence of prolate-like rotation is 50 per cent, while for a magnitude limited sub-sample of objects within the Shapley Super Cluster (mostly satellites), 35 per cent of galaxies show prolate-like rotation. Placing our galaxies on the mass - size diagram, we show that they all fall on a branch extending almost an order of magnitude in mass and a factor of 5 in size from the massive end early-type galaxies, previously recognised as associated with major dissipation-less mergers. The presence of galaxies with complex kinematics and, particularly, prolate-like rotators suggests, according to current numerical simulations, that the most massive galaxies grow predominantly through dissipation-less equal-mass mergers., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, accepted to MNRAS

ABRIDGED: Diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) are faint spectral absorption features of unknown origin. Research on DIBs beyond the Local Group (LG) will surely blossom in the era of the ELTs. A possibility that needs to be explored is the use of integral field spectrographs. We do so by using MUSE data for the Antennae Galaxy, the closest major galaxy merger. High S-to-N spectra were created by co-adding the signal of many spatial elements. The emission of the underlying stellar population was modeled using STARLIGHT. To our knowledge, we have derived the first maps for the DIBs at l5780 and l5797 in galaxies outside the LG. The l5780 DIB was detected in an area of ~0.6 arcmin2, corresponding to a linear scale of ~25 kpc2. This region was sampled using >200 independent lines of sight. The DIB l5797 was detected in >100 independent lines of sight. Both DIBs are associated with a region with high emission in the HI 21 cm line, implying a connection between atomic gas and DIBs, as the correlations for the Milky Way also suggest. Conversely, there is mild spatial association between the two DIBs and the molecular gas, in agreement with results for our Galaxy that indicate a lack of correlation between DIBs and molecular gas. The overall structure for the DIB strength distribution and extinction are comparable. Within the system, the l5780 DIB clearly correlates with the extinction. Both DIBs follow the relationship between equivalent width and reddening when data for several galaxies are considered. Unidentified Infrared emission Bands (UIBs, likely caused by PAHs) and the l5780 and l5797 DIBs show similar but not identical spatial distributions. We attribute the differences to extinction effects without necessarily implying a radically different nature of the respective carriers. As part of our massive spectroscopic survey of 25 Galactic globular clusters with MUSE, we performed multiple epoch observations of NGC 3201 with the aim of constraining the binary fraction. In this cluster, we found one curious star at the main-sequence turn-off with radial velocity variations of the order of 100 km/s, indicating the membership to a binary system with an unseen component since no other variations appear in the spectra. Using an adapted variant of the generalized Lomb-Scargle periodogram, we could calculate the orbital parameters and found the companion to be a detached stellar-mass black hole with a minimum mass of 4.36 $\pm$ 0.41 solar masses. The result is an important constraint for binary and black hole evolution models in globular clusters as well as in the context of gravitational wave sources., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

The "Antennae Galaxy" (NGC 4038/39) is the closest major interacting galaxy system and therefore often taken as merger prototype. We present the first comprehensive integral field spectroscopic dataset of this system, observed with the MUSE instrument at the ESO VLT. We cover the two regions in this system which exhibit recent star-formation: the central galaxy interaction and a region near the tip of the southern tidal tail. In these fields, we detect HII regions and diffuse ionized gas to unprecedented depth. About 15% of the ionized gas was undetected by previous observing campaigns. This newly detected faint ionized gas is visible everywhere around the central merger, and shows filamentary structure. We estimate diffuse gas fractions of about 60% in the central field and 10% in the southern region. We are able to show that the southern region contains a significantly different population of HII regions, showing fainter luminosities. By comparing HII region luminosities with the HST catalog of young star clusters in the central field, we estimate that there is enough Lyman-continuum leakage in the merger to explain the amount of diffuse ionized gas that we detect. We compare the Lyman-continuum escape fraction of each HII region against ionization-parameter sensitive emission line ratios. While we find no systematic trend between these properties, the most extreme line ratios seem to be strong indicators of density bounded ionization. Extrapolating the Lyman-continuum escape fractions to the southern region, we conclude that just from the comparison of the young stellar populations to the ionized gas there is no need to invoke other ionization mechanisms than Lyman-continuum leaking HII regions for the diffuse ionized gas in the Antennae., Comment: Paper accepted by A&A. We present the deepest study to date of the Lya luminosity function (LF) in a blank field using blind integral field spectroscopy from MUSE. We constructed a sample of 604 Lya emitters (LAEs) across the redshift range 2.91 < z < 6.64 using automatic detection software in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. We calculate accurate total Lya fluxes capturing low surface brightness extended Lya emission now known to be a generic property of high-redshift star-forming galaxies. We simulated realistic extended LAEs to characterise the selection function of our samples, and performed flux-recovery experiments to test and correct for bias in our determination of total Lya fluxes. We find an accurate completeness correction accounting for extended emission reveals a very steep faint-end slope of the LF, alpha, down to luminosities of log10 L erg s^-1< 41.5, applying both the 1/Vmax and maximum likelihood estimators. Splitting the sample into three broad redshift bins, we see the faint-end slope increasing from -2.03+1.42-inf at z ~ 3.44 to -2.86+0.76-inf at z ~ 5.48, however no strong evolution is seen between the 68% confidence regions in L*-alpha parameter space. Using the Lya line flux as a proxy for star formation activity, and integrating the observed LFs, we find that LAEs' contribution to the cosmic SFRD rises with redshift until it is comparable to that from continuum-selected samples by z ~ 6. This implies that LAEs may contribute more to the star-formation activity of the early Universe than previously thought - any additional interglactic medium correction would act to further boost the Lya luminosities. Finally, assuming fiducial values for the escape of Lya and LyC radiation, and the clumpiness of the IGM, we integrated the maximum likelihood LF at 5.00 < z < 6.64 and find we require only a small extrapolation beyond the data (< 1 dex in L) for LAEs alone to maintain an ionised IGM at z ~ 6., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures. We provide, for the first time, robust observational constraints on the galaxy major merger fraction up to $z\approx 6$ using spectroscopic close pair counts. Deep Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) observations in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF) and Hubble Deep Field South (HDF-S) are used to identify 113 secure close pairs of galaxies among a parent sample of 1801 galaxies spread over a large redshift range ($0.2

We report the discovery of a 10^4 kpc^2 gaseous structure detected in [OII] in an over-dense region of the COSMOS-Gr30 galaxy group at z~0.725 thanks to deep MUSE Guaranteed Time Observations. We estimate the total amount of diffuse ionised gas to be of the order of (~5+-3)x10^10 Msun and explore its physical properties to understand its origin and the source(s) of the ionisation. The MUSE data allow the identification of a dozen of group members embedded in this structure from emission and absorption lines. We extracted spectra from small apertures defined for both the diffuse ionised gas and the galaxies. We investigated the kinematics and ionisation properties of the various galaxies and extended gas regions thanks to line diagnostics (R23, O32 and [OIII]/H\beta) available within the MUSE wavelength range. We compared these diagnostics to photo-ionisation models and shock models. The structure is divided in two kinematically distinct sub-structures. The most extended sub-structure of ionised gas is likely rotating around a massive galaxy and displays filamentary patterns linking some galaxies. The second sub-structure links another massive galaxy hosting an Active Galactic Nucleus to a low mass galaxy but also extends orthogonally to the AGN host disk over ~35 kpc. This extent is likely ionised by the AGN itself. The location of small diffuse regions in the R23 vs. O32 diagram is compatible with photo-ionisation. However, the location of three of these regions in this diagram (low O32, high R23) can also be explained by shocks, which is supported by their large velocity dispersions. One edge-on galaxy shares the same properties and may be a source of shocks. Whatever the hypothesis, the extended gas seems to be non primordial. Non-resonant FeII* 2365, 2396, 2612, 2626 emission can potentially trace galactic winds in emission and provide useful constraints to wind models. From the 3'x3' mosaic of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (UDF) obtained with the VLT/MUSE integral field spectrograph, we identify a statistical sample of 40 FeII* emitters and 50 MgII 2796, 2803 emitters from a sample of 271 [OII] 3726, 3729 emitters with reliable redshifts from z = 0.85 - 1.5 down to 2E-18 (3 sigma) ergs/s/cm^2 (for [OII]), covering the stellar mass range 10^8 - 10^11 Msun. The FeII* and MgII emitters follow the galaxy main sequence, but with a clear dichotomy. Galaxies with masses below 10^9 Msun and star formation rates (SFRs) of <1 Msun/year have MgII emission without accompanying FeII* emission, whereas galaxies with masses above 10^10 Msun and SFRs >10 Msun/year have FeII* emission without accompanying MgII emission. Between these two regimes, galaxies have both MgII and FeII* emission, typically with MgII P-Cygni profiles. Indeed, the MgII profile shows a progression along the main sequence from pure emission to P-Cygni profiles to strong absorption, due to resonant trapping. Combining the deep MUSE data with HST ancillary information, we find that galaxies with pure MgII emission profiles have lower star formation rate surface densities than those with either MgII P-Cygni profiles or FeII* emission. These spectral signatures produced through continuum scattering and fluorescence, MgII P-Cygni profiles and FeII* emission, are better candidates for tracing galactic outflows than pure MgII emission, which may originate from HII regions. We compare the absorption and emission rest-frame equivalent widths for pairs of FeII transitions to predictions from outflow models and find that the observations consistently have less total re-emission than absorption, suggesting either dust extinction or non-isotropic outflow geometries., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in A&A (14 October 2017)

We present spatially resolved stellar kinematic maps, for the first time, for a sample of 17 intermediate redshift galaxies (0.2 < z < 0.8). We used deep MUSE/VLT integral field spectroscopic observations in the Hubble Deep Field South (HDFS) and Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF), resulting from ~30h integration time per field, each covering 1'x1' field of view, with ~0.65" spatial resolution. We selected all galaxies brighter than 25mag in the I band and for which the stellar continuum is detected over an area that is at least two times larger than the spatial resolution. The resulting sample contains mostly late-type disk, main-sequence star-forming galaxies with 10^8.5 - 10^10.5 Msun. Using a full-spectrum fitting technique, we derive two-dimensional maps of the stellar and gas kinematics, including the radial velocity V and velocity dispersion sigma. We find that most galaxies in the sample are consistent with having rotating stellar disks with roughly constant velocity dispersions and that the Vrms=sqrt{V^2+sigma^2} of the gas and stars, a scaling proxy for the galaxy gravitational potential, compare well to each other. These spatially resolved observations of intermediate redshift galaxies suggest that the regular stellar kinematics of disk galaxies that is observed in the local Universe was already in place 4 - 7 Gyr ago and that their gas kinematics traces the gravitational potential of the galaxy, thus is not dominated by shocks and turbulent motions. Finally, we build dynamical axisymmetric Jeans models constrained by the derived stellar kinematics for two specific galaxies and derive their dynamical masses. These are in good agreement (within 25%) with those derived from simple exponential disk models based on the gas kinematics. This is the first of a series of papers presenting the results from our survey of 25 Galactic globular clusters with the MUSE integral-field spectrograph. In combination with our dedicated algorithm for source deblending, MUSE provides unique multiplex capabilities in crowded stellar fields and allows us to acquire samples of up to 20 000 stars within the half-light radius of each cluster. The present paper focuses on the analysis of the internal dynamics of 22 out of the 25 clusters, using about 500 000 spectra of 200 000 individual stars. Thanks to the large stellar samples per cluster, we are able to perform a detailed analysis of the central rotation and dispersion fields using both radial profiles and two-dimensional maps. The velocity dispersion profiles we derive show a good general agreement with existing radial velocity studies but typically reach closer to the cluster centres. By comparison with proper motion data we derive or update the dynamical distance estimates to 14 clusters. Compared to previous dynamical distance estimates for 47 Tuc, our value is in much better agreement with other methods. We further find significant (>3sigma) rotation in the majority (13/22) of our clusters. Our analysis seems to confirm earlier findings of a link between rotation and the ellipticities of globular clusters. In addition, we find a correlation between the strengths of internal rotation and the relaxation times of the clusters, suggesting that the central rotation fields are relics of the cluster formation that are gradually dissipated via two-body relaxation., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS, 29 pages, 14 figures, radial kinematics profiles available at https://musegc.uni-goettingen.de/

We present the MUSE Hubble Ultra Deep Survey, a mosaic of nine MUSE fields covering 90\% of the entire HUDF region with a 10-hour deep exposure time, plus a deeper 31-hour exposure in a single 1.15 arcmin2 field. The improved observing strategy and advanced data reduction results in datacubes with sub-arcsecond spatial resolution (0.65 arcsec at 7000 A) and accurate astrometry (0.07 arcsec rms). We compare the broadband photometric properties of the datacubes to HST photometry, finding a good agreement in zeropoint up to mAB=28 but with an increasing scatter for faint objects. We have investigated the noise properties and developed an empirical way to account for the impact of the correlation introduced by the 3D drizzle interpolation. The achieved 3 sigma emission line detection limit for a point source is 1.5 and 3.1 10-19 erg.s-1.cm-2 for the single ultra-deep datacube and the mosaic, respectively. We extracted 6288 sources using an optimal extraction scheme that takes the published HST source locations as prior. In parallel, we performed a blind search of emission line galaxies using an original method based on advanced test statistics and filter matching. The blind search results in 1251 emission line galaxy candidates in the mosaic and 306 in the ultradeep datacube, including 72 sources without HST counterparts (mAB>31). In addition 88 sources missed in the HST catalog but with clear HST counterparts were identified. This data set is the deepest spectroscopic survey ever performed. In just over 100 hours of integration time, it provides nearly an order of magnitude more spectroscopic redshifts compared to the data that has been accumulated on the UDF over the past decade. The depth and high quality of these datacubes enables new and detailed studies of the physical properties of the galaxy population and their environments over a large redshift range., Comment: 21 pages

We map the interstellar medium (ISM) including the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) in absorption toward the globular cluster NGC 6397 using VLT/MUSE. This pilot study demonstrates the power of MUSE for mapping the local ISM on very small scales which provides a new window for ISM observations. Assuming the absorbers are located at the rim of the Local Bubble we trace small-scale variations in NaI and KI as well as in several DIBs structures on the order of mpc (milliparsec, a few thousand AU). The sightlines defined by binned stellar spectra are separated by only a few arcseconds and we probe the absorption within a physically connected region. This analysis utilized the fitting residuals of individual stellar spectra of NGC 6397 member stars and analyzed lines from neutral species and several DIBs in Voronoi-binned composite spectra with high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N). We verify the suitability of the MUSE 3D spectrograph for such measurements and gain new insights by probing a single physical absorber with multiple sight lines., Comment: 16 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We present a clustering analysis of a sample of 238 Ly{$\alpha$}-emitters at redshift 3

We present a first instalment of the MUSE-Wide survey, covering an area of 22.2 arcmin$^2$ (corresponding to $\sim$20% of the final survey) in the CANDELS/Deep area of the Chandra Deep Field South. We use the MUSE integral field spectrograph at the ESO VLT to conduct a full-area spectroscopic mapping at a depth of 1h exposure time per 1 arcmin$^2$ pointing. We searched for compact emission line objects using our newly developed LSDCat software based on a 3-D matched filtering approach, followed by interactive classification and redshift measurement of the sources. Our catalogue contains 831 distinct emission line galaxies with redshifts ranging from 0.04 to 6. Roughly one third (237) of the emission line sources are Lyman $\alpha$ emitting galaxies with $3 < z < 6$, only four of which had previously measured spectroscopic redshifts. At lower redshifts 351 galaxies are detected primarily by their [OII] emission line ($0.3 \lesssim z \lesssim 1.5$), 189 by their [OIII] line ($0.21 \lesssim z \lesssim 0.85$), and 46 by their H$\alpha$ line ($0.04 \lesssim z \lesssim 0.42$). Comparing our spectroscopic redshifts to photometric redshift estimates from the literature, we find excellent agreement for $z<1.5$ with a median $\Delta z$ of only $\sim 4 \times 10^{-4}$ and an outlier rate of 6%, however a significant systematic offset of $\Delta z = 0.26$ and an outlier rate of 23% for Ly$\alpha$ emitters at $z>3$. Emission signatures from galactic winds provide an opportunity to directly map the outflowing gas, but this is traditionally challenging because of the low surface brightness. Using deep observations (27 hours) of the Hubble Deep Field South from the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) instrument, we identify signatures of an outflow in both emission and absorption from a spatially resolved galaxy at z = 1.29 with a stellar mass M* = 8 x 10^9 Msun, star formation rate SFR = 77 Msun/yr, and star formation rate surface brightness 1.6 Msun/kpc^2 within the [OII] half-light radius R_1/2,[OII] = 2.76 +- 0.17 kpc. From a component of the strong resonant MgII and FeII absorptions at -350 km/s, we infer a mass outflow rate that is comparable to the star formation rate. We detect non-resonant FeII* emission, at lambda 2626, 2612, 2396, and 2365, at 1.2-2.4-1.5-2.7 x 10^-18 egs s-1 cm-2 respectively. These flux ratios are consistent with the expectations for optically thick gas. By combining the four non-resonant FeII* emission lines, we spatially map the FeII* emission from an individual galaxy for the first time. The FeII* emission has an elliptical morphology that is roughly aligned with the galaxy minor kinematic axis, and its integrated half-light radius R_1/2,FeII* = 4.1 +- 0.4 kpc is 50% larger than the stellar continuum (R_1/2,* = 2.34 +- 0.17 kpc) or the [OII] nebular line. Moreover, the FeII* emission shows a blue wing extending up to -400 km/s, which is more pronounced along the galaxy minor kinematic axis and reveals a C-shaped pattern in a p-v diagram along that axis. We present MUSE integral field spectroscopic data of the S0 galaxy NGC 3115 obtained during the instrument commissioning at the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT). We analyse the galaxy stellar kinematics and stellar populations and present two dimensional maps of their associated quantities. We thus illustrate the capacity of MUSE to map extra-galactic sources to large radii in an efficient manner, i.e., ~4 Re, and provide relevant constraints on its mass assembly. We probe the well known set of substructures of NGC 3115 (its nuclear disc, stellar rings, outer kpc-scale stellar disc and spheroid) and show their individual associated signatures in the MUSE stellar kinematics and stellar populations maps. In particular, we confirm that NGC 3115 has a thin fast rotating stellar disc embedded in a fast rotating spheroid, and that these two structures show clear differences in their stellar age and metallicity properties. We emphasise an observed correlation between the radial stellar velocity, V, and the Gauss-Hermite moment, h3, creating a "butterfly" shape in the central 15" of the h3 map. We further detect the previously reported weak spiral and ring-like structures, and find evidence that these features can be associated with regions of younger mean stellar ages. We provide tentative evidence for the presence of a bar, despite the fact that the V-h3 correlation can be reproduced by a simple axisymmetric dynamical model. Finally, we present a reconstruction of the two dimensional star formation history of NGC 3115 and find that most of its current stellar mass was formed at early epochs (>12Gyr ago), while star formation continued in the outer (kpc-scale) stellar disc until recently. We present a detailed analysis of the kinematics of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6397 based on more than ~18,000 spectra obtained with the novel integral field spectrograph MUSE. While NGC 6397 is often considered a core collapse cluster, our analysis suggests a flattening of the surface brightness profile at the smallest radii. Although it is among the nearest globular clusters, the low velocity dispersion of NGC 6397 of <5km/s imposes heavy demands on the quality of the kinematical data. We show that despite its limited spectral resolution, MUSE reaches an accuracy of 1km/s in the analysis of stellar spectra. We find slight evidence for a rotational component in the cluster and the velocity dispersion profile that we obtain shows a mild central cusp. To investigate the nature of this feature, we calculate spherical Jeans models and compare these models to our kinematical data. This comparison shows that if a constant mass-to-light ratio is assumed, the addition of an intermediate-mass black hole with a mass of 600M_sun brings the model predictions into agreement with our data, and therefore could be at the origin of the velocity dispersion profile. We further investigate cases with varying mass-to-light ratios and find that a compact dark stellar component can also explain our observations. However, such a component would closely resemble the black hole from the constant mass-to-light ratio models as this component must be confined to the central ~5arcsec of the cluster and must have a similar mass. Independent constraints on the distribution of stellar remnants in the cluster or kinematic measurements at the highest possible spatial resolution should be able to distinguish the two alternatives., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Aims. We demonstrate the high multiplex advantage of crowded field 3D spectroscopy using the new integral field spectrograph MUSE by means of a spectroscopic analysis of more than 12,000 individual stars in the globular cluster NGC 6397. Methods. The stars are deblended with a PSF fitting technique, using a photometric reference catalogue from HST as prior, including relative positions and brightnesses. This catalogue is also used for a first analysis of the extracted spectra, followed by an automatic in-depth analysis using a full-spectrum fitting method based on a large grid of PHOENIX spectra. Results. With 18,932 spectra from 12,307 stars in NGC 6397 we have analysed the largest sample so far available for a single globular cluster. We derived a mean radial velocity of vrad=17.84+-0.07 km/s and a mean metallicity of [Fe/H]=-2.120+-0.002, with the latter seemingly varying with temperature for stars on the RGB. We determine T_eff and [Fe/H] from the spectra, and log g from HST photometry. This is the first very comprehensive HRD for a globular cluster based on the analysis of several thousands of stellar spectra, ranging from the main sequence to the tip of the RGB. Spatially resolved studies of high redshift galaxies, an essential insight into galaxy formation processes, have been mostly limited to stacking or unusually bright objects. We present here the study of a typical (L$^{*}$, M$_\star$ = 6 $\times 10^9$ $M_\odot$) young lensed galaxy at $z=3.5$, observed with MUSE, for which we obtain 2D resolved spatial information of Ly$\alpha$ and, for the first time, of CIII] emission. The exceptional signal-to-noise of the data reveals UV emission and absorption lines rarely seen at these redshifts, allowing us to derive important physical properties (T$_e\sim$15600 K, n$_e\sim$300 cm$^{-3}$, covering fraction f$_c\sim0.4$) using multiple diagnostics. Inferred stellar and gas-phase metallicities point towards a low metallicity object (Z$_{\mathrm{stellar}}$ = $\sim$ 0.07 Z$_\odot$ and Z$_{\mathrm{ISM}}$ $<$ 0.16 Z$_\odot$). The Ly$\alpha$ emission extends over $\sim$10 kpc across the galaxy and presents a very uniform spectral profile, showing only a small velocity shift which is unrelated to the intrinsic kinematics of the nebular emission. The Ly$\alpha$ extension is $\sim$4 times larger than the continuum emission, and makes this object comparable to low-mass LAEs at low redshift, and more compact than the Lyman-break galaxies and Ly$\alpha$ emitters usually studied at high redshift. We model the Ly$\alpha$ line and surface brightness profile using a radiative transfer code in an expanding gas shell, finding that this model provides a good description of both observables., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures, accepted in MNRAS

(Abridged) We make use of the deepest VLT/MUSE observations performed so far on the Hubble Deep Field South (HDFS) to characterize the low-mass (< $10^{10}$M$_\odot$) galaxy population at intermediate redshift. We identify a sample of 28 spatially-resolved emission-line galaxies in the deep (27h integration time) MUSE data cube, spread over a redshift interval of 0.2 < z < 1.4. The public HST images and multi-band photometry over the HDFS are used to constrain the stellar mass and star formation rate (SFR) of the galaxies and to perform a morphological analysis. We derive the resolved ionized gas properties of these galaxies from the MUSE data and model the disk (both in 2D and with GalPaK$^{\rm 3D}$) to retrieve their intrinsic gas kinematics. We build a sample of resolved emission-line galaxies of much lower stellar mass and SFR (by $\sim$1-2 orders of magnitude) than previous 3D spectroscopic surveys. Most of the spatially-resolved MUSE-HDFS galaxies have gas kinematics consistent with disk-like rotation, but about 20% have velocity dispersions larger than the rotation velocities, and 30% are part of a close pair and/or show clear signs of recent gravitational interactions. In the high-mass regime, the MUSE-HDFS galaxies follow the Tully-Fisher relation defined from previous surveys in a similar redshift range. This scaling relation extends also to lower masses/velocities but with a higher dispersion. The MUSE-HDFS galaxies follow the scaling relations defined in the local universe between the specific angular momentum and the stellar mass. However, we find that intermediate-redshift star-forming galaxies fill a continuum transition from the spiral to elliptical local scaling relations, according to the dynamical state of the gas. This indicates that some galaxies may lose their angular momentum and become dispersion-dominated prior to becoming passive., Comment: 26 pages. Published in A&A

A nebular analysis of the central Orion Nebula and its main structures is presented. We exploit MUSE integral field observations in the wavelength range 4595-9366 \r{A} to produce the first O, S and N ionic and total abundance maps of a region spanning 6' x 5' with a spatial resolution of 0.2". We use the S$_{23}$ ( = ([SII]$\lambda$6717,31+[SIII]$\lambda$9068)/H$\beta$) parameter, together with [OII]/[OIII] as an indicator of the degree of ionisation, to distinguish between the various small-scale structures. The only Orion Bullet covered by MUSE is HH 201, which shows a double component in the [FeII]$\lambda$8617 line throughout indicating an expansion, and we discuss a scenario in which this object is undergoing a disruptive event. We separate the proplyds located south of the Bright Bar into four categories depending on their S$_{23}$ values, propose the utility of the S$_{23}$ parameter as an indicator of the shock-contribution to the excitation of line-emitting atoms, and show that the MUSE data is able to identify the proplyds associated with disks and microjets. We compute the second order structure function for the H$\alpha$, [OIII]$\lambda$5007, [SII]$\lambda$6731 and [OI]$\lambda$6300 emission lines to analyse the turbulent velocity field of the region covered with MUSE. We present IFU observations with MUSE@VLT and deep imaging with FORS@VLT of a dwarf galaxy recently formed within the giant collisional HI ring surrounding NGC 5291. This TDG-like object has the characteristics of typical z=1-2 gas-rich spiral galaxies: a high gas fraction, a rather turbulent clumpy ISM, the absence of an old stellar population, a moderate metallicity and star formation efficiency. The MUSE spectra allow us to determine the physical conditions within the various complex substructures revealed by the deep optical images, and to scrutinize at unprecedented spatial resolution the ionization processes at play in this specific medium. Starburst age, extinction and metallicity maps of the TDG and surrounding regions were determined using the strong emission lines Hbeta, [OIII], [OI], [NII], Halpha and [SII] combined with empirical diagnostics. Discrimination between different ionization mechanisms was made using BPT--like diagrams and shock plus photoionization models. Globally, the physical conditions within the star--forming regions are homogeneous, with in particular an uniform half-solar oxygen abundance. At small scales, the derived extinction map shows narrow dust lanes. Regions with atypically strong [OI] emission line immediately surround the TDG. The [OI] / Halpha ratio cannot be easily accounted for by photoionization by young stars or shock models. At larger distances from the main star--forming clumps, a faint diffuse blue continuum emission is observed, both with the deep FORS images and MUSE data. It does not have a clear counterpart in the UV regime probed by GALEX. A stacked spectrum towards this region does not exhibit any emission line, excluding faint levels of star formation, nor stellar absorption lines that might have revealed the presence of old stars. Tidal dwarf galaxies (TDGs) are recycled objects that form within the collisional debris of interacting/merging galaxies. They are expected to be devoid of non-baryonic dark matter, since they can form only from dissipative material ejected from the discs of the progenitor galaxies. We investigate the gas dynamics in a sample of six bona-fide TDGs around three interacting and post-interacting systems: NGC 4694, NGC 5291, and NGC 7252 ("Atoms for Peace"). For NGC 4694 and NGC 5291 we analyse existing HI data from the Very Large Array (VLA), while for NGC 7252 we present new HI observations from the Jansky VLA together with long-slit and integral-field optical spectroscopy. For all six TDGs, the HI emission can be described by rotating disc models. These HI discs, however, have undergone less than a full rotation since the time of the interaction/merger event, raising the question of whether they are in dynamical equilibrium. Assuming that these discs are in equilibrium, the inferred dynamical masses are consistent with the observed baryonic masses, implying that TDGs are devoid of dark matter. This puts constraints on putative "dark discs" (either baryonic or non-baryonic) in the progenitor galaxies. Moreover, TDGs seem to systematically deviate from the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation. We report the detection of extended Ly alpha emission around individual star-forming galaxies at redshifts z = 3-6 in an ultradeep exposure of the Hubble Deep Field South obtained with MUSE on the ESO-VLT. The data reach a limiting surface brightness (1sigma) of ~1 x 10^-19 erg s^-1 cm^-2 arcsec^-2 in azimuthally averaged radial profiles, an order of magnitude improvement over previous narrowband imaging. Our sample consists of 26 spectroscopically confirmed Ly alpha-emitting, but mostly continuum-faint (m_AB >~ 27) galaxies. In most objects the Ly alpha emission is considerably more extended than the UV continuum light. While 5 of the faintest galaxies in the sample show no significantly detected Ly alpha haloes, the derived upper limits suggest that this is just due to insufficient S/N. Ly alpha haloes therefore appear to be (nearly) ubiquitous even for low-mass (~10^8-10^9 M_sun) star-forming galaxies at z>3. We decompose the Ly alpha emission of each object into a compact `continuum-like' and an extended halo component, and infer sizes and luminosities of the haloes. The extended Ly alpha emission approximately follows an exponential surface brightness distribution with a scale length of a few kpc. While these haloes are thus quite modest in terms of their absolute sizes, they are larger by a factor of 5-15 than the corresponding rest-frame UV continuum sources as seen by HST. They are also much more extended, by a factor ~5, than Ly alpha haloes around low-redshift star-forming galaxies. Between ~40% and >90% of the observed Ly alpha flux comes from the extended halo component, with no obvious correlation of this fraction with either the absolute or the relative size of the Ly alpha halo. Our observations provide direct insights into the spatial distribution of at least partly neutral gas residing in the circumgalactic medium of low to intermediate mass galaxies at z > 3., Comment: accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysics

[abridged] The polar disk galaxy NGC4650A was observed during the commissioning of the MUSE at the ESO VLT to obtain the first 2D map of the velocity and velocity dispersion for both stars and gas. The new MUSE data allow the analysis of the structure and kinematics towards the central regions of NGC4650A, where the two components co-exist. These regions were unexplored by the previous long-slit literature data available for this galaxy. The extended view of NGC~4650A given by the MUSE data is a galaxy made of two perpendicular disks that remain distinct and drive the kinematics right into the very centre of this object. In order to match this observed structure for NGC4650A, we constructed a multicomponent mass model made by the combined projection of two disks. By comparing the observations with the 2D kinematics derived from the model, we found that the modelled mass distribution in these two disks can, on average, account for the complex kinematics revealed by the MUSE data, also in the central regions of the galaxy where the two components coexist. This result is a strong constraint on the dynamics and formation history of this galaxy; it further supports the idea that polar disk galaxies like NGC~4650A were formed through the accretion of material that has different angular momentum., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures; accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

MUSE, a giant integral field spectrograph, is about to become the newest facility instrument at the VLT. It will see first light in February 2014. Here, we summarize the properties of the instrument as built and outline functionality of the data reduction system, that transforms the raw data that gets recorded separately in 24 IFUs by 4k CCDs, into a fully calibrated, scientifically usable data cube. We present a new integral-field spectroscopic dataset of the central part of the Orion Nebula (M 42), observed with the MUSE instrument at the ESO VLT. We reduced the data with the public MUSE pipeline. The output products are two FITS cubes with a spatial size of ~5.9'x4.9' (corresponding to ~0.76 pc x 0.63 pc) and a contiguous wavelength coverage of 4595...9366 Angstrom, spatially sampled at 0.2". We provide two versions with a sampling of 1.25 Angstrom and 0.85 Angstrom in dispersion direction. Together with variance cubes these files have a size of 75 and 110 GiB on disk. They represent one of the largest integral field mosaics to date in terms of information content. We make them available for use in the community. To validate this dataset, we compare world coordinates, reconstructed magnitudes, velocities, and absolute and relative emission line fluxes to the literature and find excellent agreement. We derive a two-dimensional map of extinction and present de-reddened flux maps of several individual emission lines and of diagnostic line ratios. MUSE observations of NGC5813 reveal a complex structure in the velocity dispersion map, previously hinted by SAURON observations. The structure is reminiscent of velocity dispersion maps of galaxies comprising two counter-rotating discs, and may explain the existence of the kinematically distinct core (KDC). Further evidence for two counter-rotating components comes from the analysis of the higher moments of the stellar line-of-sight velocity distributions and fitting MUSE spectra with two separate Gaussian line-of-sight velocity distributions. The emission-line kinematics show evidence of being linked to the present cooling flows and the buoyant cavities seen in X-rays. We detect ionised gas in a nuclear disc-like structure, oriented like the KDC, which is, however, not directly related to the KDC. We build an axisymmetric Schwarzschild dynamical model, which shows that the MUSE kinematics can be reproduced well with two counter-rotating orbit families, characterised by relatively low angular momentum components, but clearly separated in integral phase space and with radially varying contributions. The model indicates that the counter-rotating components in NGC5813 are not thin discs, but dynamically hot structures. Our findings give further evidence that KDCs in massive galaxies should not necessarily be considered as structurally or dynamically decoupled regions, but as the outcomes of the mixing of different orbital families, where the balance in the distribution of mass of the orbital families is crucial. Diffuse Interstellar Bands (DIBs) are non-stellar weak absorption features of unknown origin found in the spectra of stars viewed through one or several clouds of Interstellar Medium (ISM). Research of DIBs outside the Milky Way is currently very limited. Specifically spatially resolved investigations of DIBs outside of the Local Group is, to our knowledge, inexistent. Here, we explore the capability of the high sensitivity Integral Field Spectrograph, MUSE, as a tool to map diffuse interstellar bands at distances larger than 100 Mpc. We use MUSE commissioning data for AM 1353-272 B, the member with highest extinction of the "The Dentist's Chair", an interacting system of two spiral galaxies. High signal-to-noise spectra were created by co-adding the signal of many spatial elements distributed in a geometry of concentric elliptical half-rings. We derived decreasing radial profiles for the equivalent width of the $\lambda$5780.5 DIB both in the receding and approaching side of the companion galaxy up to distances of $\sim$4.6 kpc from the center of the galaxy. Likewise, interstellar extinction, as derived from the Halpha/Hbeta line ratio displays a similar trend, with decreasing values towards the external parts. This translates into an intrinsic correlation between the strength of the DIB and the extinction within AM 1353-272 B consistent with the current existing global trend between these quantities when using measurements for both Galactic and extragalactic sight lines. Mapping of DIB strength in the Local Universe as up to now only done for the Milky Way seems feasible. MUSE, the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer, is a 2nd generation integral-field spectrograph under final assembly to see first light at the Very Large Telescope in 2013. By capturing ~ 90000 optical spectra in a single exposure, MUSE represents a challenge for data reduction and analysis. We give an introduction into the observational technique of integral field or 3D spectroscopy. We discuss advantages and drawbacks of this type of observations and highlight a few science projects enabled by this method. In the second part we describe our 3D spectroscopic survey of Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxies. We have measured redshifts for 243 z ~3 quasars in nine VLT VIMOS LBG redshift survey areas, each of which is centred on a known bright quasar. Using spectra of these quasars, we measure the cross-correlation between neutral hydrogen gas causing the Lya forest and 1020 Lyman-break galaxies at z ~3. We find an increase in neutral hydrogen absorption within 5 h^-1 Mpc of a galaxy in agreement with the results of Adelberger et al. (2003, 2005). The Lya-LBG cross-correlation can be described by a power-law on scales larger than 3 h^-1 Mpc. When galaxy velocity dispersions are taken into account our results at smaller scales (<2 h^-1 Mpc) are also in good agreement with the results of Adelberger et al. (2005). There is little immediate indication of a region with a transmission spike above the mean IGM value which might indicate the presence of star-formation feedback. To measure the galaxy velocity dispersions, which include both intrinsic LBG velocity dispersion and redshift errors, we have used the LBG-LBG redshift space distortion measurements of Bielby et al. (2010). We find that the redshift-space transmission spike implied in the results of Adelberger et al. (2003) is too narrow to be physical in the presence of the likely LBG velocity dispersion and is likely to be a statistical fluke. Nevertheless, neither our nor previous data can rule out the presence of a narrow, real-space transmission spike, given the evidence of the increased Lya absorption surrounding LBGs which can mask the spike's presence when convolved with a realistic LBG velocity dispersion. Finally, we identify 176 CIV systems in the quasar spectra and find an LBG-CIV correlation strength on scales of 10 h^-1 Mpc consistent with the relation measured at ~Mpc scales., Comment: 33 pages, 16 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We present the initial imaging and spectroscopic data acquired as part of the VLT VIMOS Lyman-break galaxy Survey. UBR (or UBVI) imaging covers five 36'x36' fields centred on bright z>3 QSOs, allowing ~21,000 22 LBGs and 10 z>2 QSOs from a total of 19 VIMOS pointings. From the galaxy spectra, we observe a 625+-510 km/s velocity offset between the ISM absorption and Ly-alpha emission line redshifts. Using the photometric and spectroscopic catalogues, we have analysed the galaxy clustering at z~3. In the photometric case, the angular correlation function, w(theta), is well fit by a double power-law with clustering scale-length, r_0 = 3.19+0.32-0.54 Mpc/h for r < 1 Mpc/h and r_0 = 4.59+0.31-0.33 Mpc/h at larger scales. Using the redshift sample we estimate the semi-projected correlation function, w_p(sigma) and find r_0 = 3.67+0.23-0.24 Mpc/h for the VLT sample and r_0 = 3.98+0.14-0.15 Mpc/h for a combined VLT+Keck sample. From the z-space correlation functions and assuming the above xi(r) models, we find that the combined VLT and Keck surveys require a galaxy velocity dispersion, ^1/2 ~ 700 km/s, higher than the ~400 km/s found by previous authors. We also measure a value for the gravitational growth rate parameter of beta(z=3) = 0.48+-0.17, implying a low value for the bias of b = 2.06+1.1-0.5. This value is consistent with the galaxy clustering amplitude which gives b = 2.22+-0.16, assuming the standard cosmology, implying that the evolution of the gravitational growth rate is also consistent with Einstein gravity. We have compared our LBG clustering amplitudes with lower redshift measurements and find that the clustering strength is not inconsistent with that of low-redshift L* spirals for simple 'long-lived' galaxy models., Comment: 27 pages, 25 figures, accepted in MNRAS

MUSE, a 2nd generation VLT instrument, will become the world's largest integral field spectrograph. It will be an AO assisted instrument which, in a single exposure, covers the wavelength range from 465 to 930 nm with an average resolution of 3000 over a field of view of 1'x1' with 0.2'' spatial sampling. Both the complexity and the rate of the data are a challenge for the data processing of this instrument. We will give an overview of the data processing scheme that has been designed for MUSE. Specifically, we will use only a single resampling step from the raw data to the reduced data product. This allows us to improve data quality, accurately propagate variance, and minimize spreading of artifacts and correlated noise. We present a clustering analysis of Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) using nearly 9 000 objects from the final catalogue of the 2dF-SDSS LRG And QSO (2SLAQ) Survey. We measure the redshift-space two-point correlation function, xi(s), at the mean LRG redshift of z=0.55. A single power-law fits the deprojected correlation function, xi(r), with a correlation length of r_0=7.45+-0.35 Mpc and a power-law slope of gamma=1.72+-0.06 in the 0.4

The galaxy pair AM 1353-272 nicknamed "The Dentist's Chair" shows two ~30 kpc long tidal tails. Previous observations using multi-slit masks showed that they host up to seven tidal dwarf galaxies. The kinematics of these tidal dwarfs appeared to be decoupled from the surrounding tidal material. New observations of the tip of the southern tidal tail with the VIMOS integral field unit confirm the results for two of these genuine tidal dwarfs but raise doubts whether the velocity gradient attributed to the outermost tidal dwarf candidate is real. We also discuss possible effects to explain the observational difference of the strongest velocity gradient seen in the slit data which is undetected in the new integral field data, but arrive at no firm conclusion. We present H-band infra-red galaxy data to a 3 sigma limit of H=22.9 and optical-infra-red colours of galaxies on the William Herschel Deep Field. These data were taken from a 7'x 7' area observed for 14 hours with the Omega Prime camera on the 3.5-m Calar Alto telescope. We derive H-band number counts, colour-magnitude diagrams and colour histograms. We review our Pure Luminosity Evolution galaxy count models based on the spectral synthesis models of Bruzual & Charlot. These PLE models give an excellent fit to the our H band count data to H<22.5 and HDF count data to H<28. However, PLE models with a Salpeter IMF for early-type galaxies overestimate the average galaxy redshift in K<20 galaxy redshift surveys. Models that assume a steep x=3 IMF give better agreement data, although they do show an unobserved peak in B-H and I-H colour distributions at faint H magnitudes corresponding to z>1 early-type galaxies. This feature may simply reflect a larger scatter in optical-infra-red colours than in the B-R colour of early-type galaxies at this redshift. This scatter is obvious in optical-IR colour-colour diagrams and may be explained by on-going star-formation in an intermediate sub-population of early-type galaxies. The numbers of EROs detected are a factor of 2-3 lower than predicted by the early-type models that assume the Salpeter IMF and in better agreement with those that assume the x=3 IMF. The tight sequence of early-type galaxies also shows a sub-class which is simultaneously redder in infrared bands and bluer in the bluer bands than the classical, passive early-type galaxy; this sub-class appears at relatively low redshifts and may constitute an intermediate age, early-type population., Comment: 17 pages, 19 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We investigate the stellar populations of a sample of Tidal Dwarf Galaxies, combining observations and evolutionary synthesis models to try and reveal their formation mechanism. On optical images we select a first sample of TDGs for which optical spectroscopy is used to measure metallicities and velocity structure. Finally, we estimate ages, burst strengths, and stellar masses from near-infrared imaging in comparison with a dedicated grid of evolutionary synthesis models, to assess if Tidal Dwarfs are formed out of collapsing gas clouds or by an accumulation of old stars from the parent galaxy or by a combination of both., Comment: To appear in "Recycling intergalactic and interstellar matter", eds. We present low-resolution spectroscopy of the ionized gas in a sample of optical knots located along the tidal features of 14 interacting galaxies and previously selected as candidates of Tidal Dwarf Galaxies (TDGs). From redshift measurements, we are able to confirm their physical association with the interacting system in almost all cases. For most knots, the oxygen abundance does not depend on the blue luminosity. The average, 12+log(O/H)=8.34+-0.20, is typical of TDGs and comparable to that measured in the outer stellar disk of spirals from which they were formed. A few knots showing low metallicities are probably pre-existing low-mass companions. The estimated Ha luminosity of the TDG candidates is higher than the one of typical individual HII regions in spiral disks and comparable to the global Ha luminosity of dwarf galaxies. We find several instances of velocity gradients with amplitudes apparently larger than 100 km/s in the ionized gas in the tidal knots and discuss various possible origins for the large velocity amplitudes. While we can exclude tidal streaming motions and outflows, we cannot rule out projection effects with the current resolution. The velocity gradients could be indicative of the internal kinematics characteristic of self-gravitating objects. Higher resolution spectra are required to confirm whether the tidal knots in our sample have already acquired their dynamical independence and are therefore genuine Tidal Dwarf Galaxies., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, partly color (but printable in greyscale without loss of information). We present VLT observations of the interacting system AM 1353-272. Using the FORS2 instrument, we studied the kinematics of the ionized gas along its prominent tidal tails and discovered strikingly large velocity gradients associated with seven luminous tidal knots. These kinematical structures cannot be caused by streaming motion and most likely do not result from projection effects. More probably, instabilities in the tidal tails have lead to the formation of kinematically decoupled objects which could be the progenitors of self-gravitating Tidal Dwarf Galaxies., Comment: 3 color figures, to appear 10. We define a Tidal Dwarf Galaxy (TDG) as a self-gravitating entity of dwarf-galaxy mass built from tidal material expelled during interactions. We then summarize our findings on broad-band imaging and spectroscopy of a sample of TDG candidates in a sequence of interacting systems. Evidence for decoupled kinematics in the ionized gas have been found in several objects. This could indicate that they are bound galaxies and therefore genuine TDGs. We present evolutionary synthesis models of starbursts on top of old stellar populations to investigate in detailed time evolution the relation between Ha luminosity and star formation rate (SFR). The models show that several effects have an impact on the ratio between L(Ha) and SFR. Metallicity different from solar abundance, a time delay between star formation and maximum Ha-luminosity, and a varying stellar initial mass function give rise to strong variations in the ratio of Ha luminosity to SFR and can cause large errors in the determination of the SFR when employing well-known calibrations. When studying star-bursting dwarf galaxies, and sub-galactic fragments at high redshift, which show SFR fluctuating on short timescales, these effects can add up to errors of two orders of magnitude compared with the calibrations. We describe our procedure to model Tidal Dwarf Galaxies in the context of our evolutionary synthesis code. Our analysis shows strong contributions of gaseous emission lines to optical colors and of continuum emission to NIR colors during the burst phase. We present deep optical B, V, R images of a sample of 10 interacting systems which were selected for their resemblance to disturbed galaxies at high redshift. Photometry is performed on knots in the tidal features of the galaxies. We calculate a grid of evolutionary synthesis models with two metallicities and various burst strengths for systems consisting of some fraction of the stellar population of a progenitor spiral plus starburst. By comparison with two-color diagrams we interpret the photometric data, select from a total of about 100 condensations 36 star-forming objects that are located in the tidal features and predict their further evolution. Being more luminous by 4 mag than normal HII regions we argue that these objects could be tidal dwarf galaxies or their progenitors, although they differ in number and mean luminosity from the already known tidal dwarf galaxies typically located at the end of tidal tails in nearby giant interacting systems. From comparison with our models we note that all objects show young burst ages. The young stellar component formed in these tidal dwarf candidates contributes up to 18% to the total stellar mass at the end of the starburst and dominates the optical luminosity.
