Background. The revascularization of small vessels using drug-eluting stents remains challenging. The use of the drug-coated balloon is an attractive therapeutic strategy in de novo lesions in small coronary vessels, particularly in the diabetic group. This study aimed to assess the outcomes of DCB-only angioplasty in small vessel disease. Methods. A total of 1198 patients with small vessel disease treated with DCB-only strategy were followed. Patients were divided into the diabetic and nondiabetic groups. Clinical and angiographical follow-up were organized at 12 months. The primary endpoints were target lesion failure and secondary major adverse cardiac events. Results. There was a significantly higher rate of target lesion failure among diabetic patients compared to nondiabetic [17 (3.9%) vs. 11 (1.4%), P = 0.006 ], taken separately, the rate of target lesion revascularization significantly differed between groups with a higher rate observed in the diabetic group [9 (2%) vs. 4 (0.5%), P = 0.014 ]. Diabetes mellitus remained an independent predictor for TLF (HR: 2.712, CI: 1.254–5.864, P = 0.011 ) and target lesion revascularization (HR: 3.698, CI: 1.112–12.298, P = 0.033 ) after adjustment. However, no significant differences were observed between groups regarding the target vessel myocardial infarction (0.6% vs. 0.1%, P = 0.110 ) and MACE [19 (4.4%) vs. 21 (2.7%), P = 0.120 ]. Conclusion. Drug-coated balloon-only treatment achieved lower incidence rates of TLF and MACE. Diabetes is an independent predictor for target lesion failure and target lesion revascularization at one year following DCB treatment in small coronary vessels. We observed no significant differences between groups regarding MACE in one year.

REE recovery from a kaolinite sample was conducted in the present study. The results of mineralogical analyses, salt leaching, and acid leaching tests confirmed that REEs predominantly existed as florencite (REEAl3(PO4)2(OH)6) in the material, and the proportion of ion-exchangeable and ion-substituted REEs was negligible. Mechanical grinding for 4 h completely destroyed the crystal structure of the material, but the recovery of total REEs was less than 20%, indicating that insufficient liberation of the REE-bearing particles is not the only factor leading to the low recovery. Thermal treatment of the raw material at 600 °C for 2 h largely enhanced the total REE recovery to as high as 92%. The improved recovery was ascribed to the thermal decomposition of crystallized florencite into an amorphous phase, which was proved through transmission electron microscopy - energy dispersive X-ray analysis. Findings from the study will contribute to REE recovery and comprehensive utilization of kaolinite.

Brassinosteroids (BRs) play essential roles in regulating plant growth and development, however, gaps still remain in our understanding of the BR signaling network. We previously cloned a grain length quantitative trait locus qGL3, encoding a rice (Oryza sativa L.) protein phosphatase with Kelch-like repeat domain (OsPPKL1), that negatively regulates grain length and BR signaling. To further explore the BR signaling network, we performed phosphoproteomic analysis to screen qGL3-regulated downstream components. We selected a 14-3-3 protein OsGF14b from the phosphoproteomic data for further analysis. qGL3 promoted the phosphorylation of OsGF14b and induced the interaction intensity between OsGF14b and OsBZR1. In addition, phosphorylation of OsGF14b played an important role in regulating nucleocytoplasmic shuttling of OsBZR1. The serine acids (Ser258Ser259) residues of OsGF14b play an essential role in BR-mediated responses and plant development. Genetic and molecular analyses indicated that OsGF14b functions as a negative regulator in BR signaling and represses the transcriptional activation activity of OsBZR1. Collectively, these results demonstrate that qGL3 induces the phosphorylation of OsGF14b, which modulates nucleocytoplasmic shuttling and transcriptional activation activity of OsBZR1, to eventually negatively regulate BR signaling and grain length in rice.

A kaolinite containing 245 ppm of REEs was used as a feedstock for REE recovery. Acid leaching test results showed that less than 20% of the REEs were leached using 1.2 mol/L HCl. However, after thermal treatment at 600 °C, a recovery of over 80% was obtained with a much lower acid concentration (0.01 mol/L). Meanwhile, only 3.91% Al, 2.34% Fe, 8.63% K, 9.32% Mg, 0.08% Ti, and 5.34% Ca were simultaneously extracted. Therefore, high-purity rare earth products are likely produced from the kaolinite. To achieve a more comprehensive utilization of the kaolinite, the residual solid after REE recovery was subjected to a selective leaching process to prepare porous silica. Comparisons among three different types of mineral acids showed that H2SO4 provided the best performance. The effects of different factors were investigated using the response surface methodology. A porous silica with as high as 336.95 m2/g specific surface area was ultimately produced.

Although drug-eluting stents are the most common interventional devices for patients with coronary disease, drug-coated balloons (DCBs) represent a novel therapeutic alternative in certain scenarios. This prospective, observational all-comers study explored the clinical outcomes of DCB use in patients with coronary lesions. All patients treated with DCBs were enrolled in this study, including patients with in-stent restenosis (ISR) or de novo lesions. The primary outcome was the target lesion revascularization (TLR) rate at one year. We enrolled 2306 patients with 2660 lesions and performed DCB angioplasty in 399 patients (17.3%) with ISR and 1907 patients (82.7%) with de novo lesions. New strategies that enhance both the targetability of chemotherapy drugs and the synergistic effects of chemotherapy and immunotherapy are urgently needed for efficacious solid tumor therapy. In this study, a novel biomimetic nanoparticle system possessing the properties of tumor targeting and immune synergy was designed to meet these requirements. Mesoporous silica nanoparticles loaded with the chemotherapeutic drug doxorubicin (DOX) were coated with cell membranes modified by glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored anti-HER2 single chain variable fragment (scFv) and the GPI-anchored co-stimulatory molecule CD80 (to promote solid tumor-targeted chemotherapy and cooperated immunotherapy, respectively). The impact of the nanotherapeutic system on both tumor-targeted chemotherapy and cellular immune response was investigated through in vitro and in vivo experiments. Structural members and kinematic pairs made of rigid materials can be flexibly used in practical applications and obtain shape-changing mechanisms. However, it also leads to a relatively complex mechanical structure and overmuch kinematic pairs, which increases the difficulty of controlling the mechanism and thus limits its application. The emergence of 4D printing technology and smart materials provides new ideas for simplifying shape-changing mechanism structure and innovation. Although smart materials are already being used in many types of mechanisms, they are almost always unique cases. How to organically combine with a specific mechanism, innovate the type of mechanism, and systematically research from structural design to deformation control is still a blank area. Therefore, this paper designs a type of novel mechanism consisting of an angulated scissor unit and a form-controlled unit, the form-controlled planar scaling mechanism, which can achieve drivable self-adjustment of size ratio under predetermined thermal stimulation. The shape-changing mechanism is thus extended to a form-controlled mechanism. This mechanism's construction method and structural principles are analyzed, and the critical structural design parameters required for deformation control are derived. Based on the above research, the core form-controlled unit that controls the deformation of this type of mechanism is designed structurally and extended to deformation control research. Finally, two sets of prototype machines are manufactured and verified the feasibility of the construction method and deformation control scheme and the correctness of the theoretical analysis. This type of mechanism promotes the innovation of mechanism design methods. It shows many application prospects in satellite deployment structures and space probe walking systems.

Lactic acid production from food waste via fermentation is environmentally sustainable. However, the characteristics of food waste fermentation to produce lactic acid are not well understood due to the complexity of food waste. This study aims to understand the effects of key variables on the characteristics of food waste fermentation to maximize lactic acid production. Food waste was enzymatically hydrolyzed and fermented by Lactobacillus pentosus. Key fermentation variables, including nitrogenous nutrient supplementation, initial sugar concentration, and pH, were investigated in batch fermentation to unveil their effects on fermentation titer, yield, and productivity. The results showed that supplementation of 0.25% (w/v%) yeast extract and peptone to the food waste fermentation media significantly improved fermentation titer and productivity, but further increase in the supplementation level did not improve fermentation. Increasing the initial sugar concentration from 40 g/L to 100 g/L increased the fermentation titer from 41.0 g/L to 93.0 g/L and productivity from 0.34 g/L/h to 0.76 g/L/h. pH 6.0 was the optimal pH for the fermentation. At the optimal conditions, food waste fermentation resulted in the highest fermentation titer, yield, and productivity of 106.7 g/L, 1.12 g/g, and 3.09 g/L/h, respectively. The high fermentation yield of 1.12 g/g might be explained by the extra lactic acid production from unidentified compounds in food waste hydrolysates. By applying fed-batch fermentation, the lactic acid concentration reached 157.0 g/L with a yield and overall productivity of 0.92 g/g and 2.0 g/L/h, respectively. Based on the mass balance, a total of 251 kg lactic acid was produced from 1000 kg food waste. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Food waste is one of the largest municipal solid wastes in the US, and most food waste ends up in landfills, causing significant economic losses and environmental concerns. In this study, we developed a fermentation process to convert food waste into biorenewable lactic acid and demonstrated that food waste is a superior feedstock for fermentation due to its embedded nutrients. Moreover, due to the embedded nutrients in food waste, the supplementation of yeast extract and peptone to fermentation can be reduced by over 50%, which can reduce the operating cost of lactic acid fermentation on an industrial scale.

REE recovery tests were performed on a kaolinite and the corresponding metakaolinite using pH static leaching method. Test results show that over 90% of REEs were leached from the metakaolinite sample at pH 0.00 and 25 °C, while less than 2% of the major constituents were simultaneously extracted. Therefore, selective leaching of REEs from the metakaolinite was achieved through pH static leaching. The leaching residue was then subjected to alkaline activation for zeolites synthesis. The effects of hydrothermal temperature and incubation period under various alkaline conditions on the synthesis of zeolites were systematically investigated. The phase compositions, textual properties, and morphology of the synthesized products were characterized. Pure zeolite A with 100% relative crystallinity was successfully synthesized at 80 °C for 6 h when using 3 M NaOH as the alkaline activator. Due to the increasing criticality of rare earth elements (REEs), it has become essential to recover REEs from alternative resources. In this study, systematic REEs leaching tests were performed on the calcination product of a coal coarse refuse using hydrochloric acid and different types of organic acid as lixiviants. Experimental results show that the recovery of REEs, especially heavy REEs (HREEs) and scandium (Sc), is improved by using selected organic acids. Citric acid and dl -malic acid afford the best leaching performances; whereas, malonic acid, oxalic acid, and dl -tartaric acid are inferior to hydrochloric acid. Results of zeta potential measurements and solution chemical equilibrium calculations show that malonic acid is more likely adsorbed on the surface of the calcined material compared with citric acid and dl -malic acid. The adsorption may reduce the effective concentration of malonic species in solution and/or increase the amount of REEs adsorbed on the surface, thereby impairing the leaching recovery. Compared with light REEs (LREEs), a stronger adsorption of the HREEs on the surface is observed from electro-kinetic test results. This finding explains why organic acids impose a more positive impact on the leaching recovery of HREEs. By complexing with the HREEs, organic acids can keep the metal ions in solution and improve the leaching recovery. The adsorption of Sc3+ on the surface is the lowest compared with other REEs. Therefore, rather than complexing, the organic anionic species likely play a function of solubilizing Sc from the solid, which is similar to that of hydrogen ions.

Recovery of rare earth elements (REE) from coal-related resources has recently received significant interest due to supply concerns and their key roles in critical industries and defense-related technologies. An integrated flowsheet consisting of sorting, crushing/grinding, physical separation, acid leaching, solvent extraction, and selective precipitation was designed to achieve continuous production of rare earth products from various coal-related resources such as coarse refuse and acid mine drainage. A pilot plant was constructed that enabled continuous testing of the circuitry on a range of different coal-based feedstocks. Despite achieving significant success in producing high-grade rare earth oxide products, low REE recovery values and high operational costs necessitated a re-evaluation of the process flowsheet. This article describes the circuitry improvements that were based on both laboratory and pilot plant test results. Roasting as a pre-leach treatment was found to significantly improve the leaching rate and overall REE recovery values. After roasting West Kentucky No. 13 and Fire Clay coal refuse materials at 600 °C, REE recovery increased by 60 and 40 absolute percentage points, respectively. Rare earth concentration in the pregnant leachate solution (PLS) was increased to around 700 ppm prior to solvent extraction using a staged precipitation method. REEs in the precipitate were re-dissolved, purified, and extracted from the PLS using solvent extraction and selective precipitation to values of around 80%. As a result of the improvements, chemical consumption in the acid leaching and solvent extraction processes was significantly reduced. A techno-economical assessment of the improved flowsheet indicated significant commercialization potential.

It is critical to separate carbon from fly ash due to its increasing amount being produced per year and component requirements for secondary utilizations. Flotation is an efficient technique to fulfill this task. Effects of diesel emulsification using sodium petroleum sulfonate on unburned carbon flotation from a fly ash sample were studied. Flotation tests showed that carbon recovery was increased from 41% to 86% using the emulsified collector at the same dosage level (0.5 kg/ton) as diesel. Zeta potential measurements indicated that both the carbon and emulsified collector droplets carried negative charges within the studied pH range. For fly ash particles with high carbon content, adsorption bands of carbonyl bond (C O) were detected in the FTIR spectra, which agreed with the XPS characterization findings. XPS analysis indicated that the emulsified diesel (ED) collector interacted more intensively with the surface carbon-oxygen groups relative to the normal diesel collector. Finally, the improved efficiency of ED is proved to be related to its polar groups and reduced oil droplet size. The polar groups of ED (mainly sulfonate) interacted with the surface oxygen containing groups (e.g., C O and COOH) through hydrogen bonding and Lewis acid base interaction.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been spreading rapidly and is still threatening human health currently. A series of measures for restraining epidemic spreading has been adopted throughout the world, which seriously impacted the gross domestic product (GDP) globally. However, details of the changes in the GDP and its spatial heterogeneity characteristics on a fine scale worldwide during the pandemic are still uncertain. We designed a novel scheme to simulate a 0.1° × 0.1° resolution grid global GDP map during the COVID-19 pandemic. Simulated nighttime-light remotely sensed data (SNTL) was forecasted via a GM(1, 1) model under the assumption that there was no COVID-19 epidemic in 2020. We constructed a geographically weighted regression (GWR) model to determine the quantitative relationship between the variation of nighttime light (ΔNTL) and the variation of GDP (ΔGDP). The scheme can detect and explain the spatial heterogeneity of ΔGDP at the grid scale. It is found that a series of policies played an obvious role in affecting GDP. This work demonstrated that the global GDP, except for in a few countries, represented a remarkably decreasing trend, whereas the ΔGDP exhibited significant differences.

Deregulation of gene expression is associated with the pathogenesis of numerous human diseases including cancer. Current data analyses on gene expression are mostly focused on differential gene/transcript expression in big data-driven studies. However, a poor connection to the proteome changes is a widespread problem in current data analyses. This is partly due to the complexity of gene regulatory pathways at the post-transcriptional level. In this study, we overcome these limitations and introduce a graph-based learning model, PTNet, which simulates the microRNAs (miRNAs) that regulate gene expression post-transcriptionally in silico. Our model does not require large-scale proteomics studies to measure the protein expression and can successfully predict the protein levels by considering the miRNA–mRNA interaction network, the mRNA expression, and the miRNA expression. Large-scale experiments on simulations and real cancer high-throughput datasets using PTNet validated that (i) the miRNA-mediated interaction network affects the abundance of corresponding proteins and (ii) the predicted protein expression has a higher correlation with the proteomics data (ground-truth) than the mRNA expression data. The classification performance also shows that the predicted protein expression has an improved prediction power on cancer outcomes compared to the prediction done by the mRNA expression data only or considering both mRNA and miRNA. Although the neural correlates of novelty and appropriateness of creative insight during cognitive tasks have been investigated in several studies, they have not been examined during mental distress in a psychotherapeutic setting. This study aimed to reveal the promoting effects of novelty and appropriateness processing on therapeutic insight in a micro-psychotherapeutic setting. We examined the effects of appropriateness (between-subject factor: appropriateness group, 20 participants; inappropriateness group, 21 participants) by manipulating the preceding negative scenarios that either fit or did not fit the subsequent solutions, and those of novelty (within-subject factor) by varying the linguistic expressions for describing solutions (metaphorical, literal, or problem-restatement). Event-related functional magnetic resonance images were collected. We found the following effects: an interactive effect of the two factors on insightfulness and activation in the bilateral hippocampus and amygdala, right superior frontal gyrus, and left superior/middle temporal gyrus; a simple effect of novelty on activation in the bilateral inferior frontal gyrus, fusiform gyrus, and inferior/middle occipital gyrus; and a simple effect of appropriateness on activation in the left inferior parietal lobule. Our findings indicate that solutions with high novelty and appropriateness generate the highest levels of therapeutic insightfulness as well as the strongest activation in the hippocampus and amygdala, which may be involved in episodic memory encoding.

High expression of long intergenic non-protein coding RNA 987 (LINC00987) is strongly associated with low overall survival of osteosarcoma; however, its role in osteosarcoma remains unclear. This study explored the biological function and underlying mechanism of LINC00987 in osteosarcoma. In this study, LINC00987 expression in osteosarcoma cells was analyzed using Cancer Cell Line Encyclopedia and qRT-PCR. The proliferation and migration and invasion in osteosarcoma cells were evaluated using Cell Counting Kit-8 and Transwell assays, respectively. Bioinformatic analysis was used to predict the LINC00987-bound miRNAs and miR-376a-5p-bound mRNAs. Dual-luciferase reporter assays were used to assess the interaction between miR-376a-5p, LINC00987, and forming-binding protein 1 (FNBP1). FNBP1 expression was measured by western blotting. LINC00987 was found to be upregulated in osteosarcoma cells. LINC00987 silencing suppressed proliferation, migration, and invasion of osteosarcoma cells. Additionally, miR-376a-5p expression was downregulated in osteosarcoma cells. miR-376a-5p knockdown reversed the effect of LINC00987 silencing on the biological function of osteosarcoma cell. miR-376a-5p was found to target LINC00987 and FNBP1. FNBP1protein level was increased in osteosarcoma cells; however, it was inhibited by silencing LINC00987 and enhanced by silencing miR-376a-5p. In conclusions, this study suggests LINC00987 silencing inhibits osteosarcoma cell proliferation, migration, and invasion by sponging miR-376a-5p to regulate FNBP1 expression. LINC00987 as a potential therapeutic target for osteosarcoma.

Neonicotinoids (NEOs) are extensively applied in global agricultural production for pest control but have adverse effects on human health. In this study, the concentrations of six NEOs and three characteristic metabolites were investigated by collecting 200 serum samples from an elderly population in China. Results showed that the NEOs and their metabolites were widely detected (89%-98 %) in the serum samples from the osteoporosis (OP) (n = 120) and non-OP (n = 80) population, and their median concentrations ranged from 0.04 ng/mL to 5.99 ng/mL and 0.01 ng/mL to 2.02 ng/mL, respectively. N-desmethyl-acetamiprid (ACE-dm) was the most abundant NEOs in the serum samples. Gender-related differences were found in concentrations of most NEOs and their metabolites in serum, with males having higher target analytes than females. Significantly (p 0.05) positive correlations were observed among most NEO concentrations, suggesting that exposure source of these substances is common or related. However, associations between the concentrations of characteristic metabolites and their corresponding NEOs were insignificant, probably because the exogenous intake are the primary sources of metabolites of NEOs instead of the internal biotransformation. The associations between NEO concentrations (i.e., ACE-dm, dinotefuran, and olefin-imidacloprid) and OP (OR = 2.33-6.92, 95 % CI = 0.37-16.9, p-trend 0.05) indicate that NEO exposure is correlated with increased odds of prevalent OP. This study is the first to document the profiles of NEOs and their metabolites in serum samples collected from an elderly population in South China and examine the relationships between NEO exposure and OP.

The pretreatment of middlings and coarse refuse material collected from a Pocahontas No.3 coal source using calcination was investigated for the potential of improving the leaching recovery of rare earth elements. Calcination at 600 °C significantly and preferentially improved light REE (LREE) recovery to values in the range of 80–90% using 1.2 M HCl. The positive effect was due to the increased pore diameter and volume as well as thermal decomposition of the minerals associated with the LREEs. Heavy REE recovery was not increased after calcination at 600 °C due to the need for higher temperatures to achieve thermal decomposition of HREE minerals. Furthermore, some HREEs were also associated with sulfide minerals (e.g., pyrite) which were transformed into low-solubility oxides (e.g., hematite) after roasting at 600 °C. Based on the leaching characteristics of the major elements (Fe, Al, Ca and Mg) and REEs along with SEM-EDX data, it was concluded that REEs in the two samples mainly occurred as phosphate minerals. In the middlings, some of the minerals were completely encapsulated by kaolinite, which was less apparent in the coarse refuse. In addition, it was found that a portion of the REEs (10–25%) in the samples were associated with the organic matter and micro-dispersed minerals in the organic matrix, was released after calcination and easily recovered using 0.1 M (NH4)2SO4 solution at pH 5. Scandium primarily occurred in mineral forms with minimum amounts associated with ion-adsorbed clays and organic association.

In this study, 2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid (PBTCA) was introduced as a depressant for the flotation separation of apatite from calcite. The micro-flotation test results showed that good floatability of both apatite and calcite were obtained at around pH 8.5 when using sodium oleate (NaOl) as collector. Mixed minerals flotation test results showed that an efficient separation of apatite from calcite was achieved using PBTCA as depressant, which presented a selective depression for the calcite. Zeta potential measurements indicated that the addition of PBTCA prior to NaOl did not interfere the interaction between NaOl and apatite while it decreased NaOl adsorption on calcite surface.

The effect of depressant 2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid (PBTCA) on the flotation separation of smithsonite from calcite was studied by micro-flotation and electro-kinetic tests. The micro-flotation results showed that good floatability of both smithsonite and calcite were achieved in the presence of sodium oleate. The depressant PBTCA selectively depressed calcite without interfering the floatability of smithsonite. The mixed minerals flotation results showed that efficiency separation of smithsonite from calcite was achieved using PBTCA as the depressant. Zeta potential measurements indicated that NaOl was able to adsorb on the PBTCA pre-treated smithsonite surface, but failed to adsorb on the PBTCA pre-treated calcite surface.

High-temperature pretreatment of coal-based mineral matter in an oxidizing environment significantly enhances the leaching characteristics of rare earth elements (REEs). A research study has found that the temperatures used in fluidized bed combustion (FBC) of coal to produce electricity are near optimum for pretreating the associated mineral matter prior to leaching to maximize the recovery of critical materials. Tests were performed on representative samples collected from preparation plants treating West Kentucky No. 13, Illinois No. 6, and Fire Clay coal seam sources as well as fly ash and bed ash samples from two FBC power plants. Acid leaching tests using 1.2 M HCl at 75 °C were performed on both the coal and the FBC ash samples. Prior to leaching, the coal samples were pretreated at temperatures of 600, 750, and 900 °C in an oxidizing environment to study the effect on leaching characteristics. Despite that the negative effects of lizardite on pentlandite flotation have been realized, the lizardite effects under different slurry pH have not been sufficiently investigated. Micro-flotation test results showed that pentlandite recovery gradually decreased with the increase in slurry pH when lizardite slime existed. Both electro-kinetic tests and turbidity measurements indicated that hetero-coagulation between the pentlandite and lizardite particles occurred in the entire pH range, which failed to explain the lower recovery at high slurry pH. Zeta potential distribution measurements and sedimentation tests suggested that self-coagulation among lizardite particles occurred at higher pH, which increased the amount of lizardite slime coated on the pentlandite surfaces and thus reducing collector adsorption and flotation recovery. The particle interaction in the pentlandite/lizardite flotation system was investigated using DLVO theory and microscope observation. The findings of the study will contribute to the improvement in pentlandite flotation by regulating the particle interactions.

This study was designed to determine whether metaphorical solutions to mental distress problems result in an insightful mental experience and activate the hippocampus and amygdala: areas associated with insight. We recruited 22 healthy university students. Trials presented 75 micro-counseling scenarios while event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was applied to detect neural responses. Each scenario included a mental distress problem and one of the following solution types: metaphorical, literal, or problem-restatement. The results revealed that, compared with literal solutions or problem-restatement solutions, metaphorical solutions activated two neural networks: one associated with basic metaphorical language processing (i.e., the left inferior frontal gyrus and middle and superior temporal gyri), and a specific network associated with insightful problem solving (i.e., the bilateral hippocampus, amygdala, and fusiform gyrus). Our findings indicate that the use of metaphorical solutions to mental distress problems reliably produces salient neural activities for insight.

Effects of sodium chloride on the sulfidization flotation of cerussite (PbCO3) were investigated by micro-flotation tests, adsorption tests and zeta potential measurements. The micro-flotation test results indicated that sodium chloride effectively improved the sulfidization flotation performance of cerussite. The electrical double layers of cerussite particles were compressed in sodium chloride solution, thus providing more lead sites on the cerussite surface and promoting the adsorption of sulfide ions. In sodium chloride solution, more lead sulfide species were formed on the cerussite surfaces and improved its sulfidization flotation performance.

A novel method to improve carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) performance in talc flotation is described in this paper. Micro-flotation results showed that using CMC as the depressant, strong depression on talc floatability was observed when the pulp pH was adjusted from low (4.0) to high (8.5), which improved the separation performance between chalcopyrite and talc. Zeta potential measurements illustrated that talc surface charge was less negative when the pH was regulated from acid to base than the situation that the pulp pH was altered from base to acid. ICP test and XPS results indicated that more magnesium ions were dissolved from the talc lattices at pH 4 and the hydrolyzed species of magnesium cations were adsorbed onto the talc surfaces when the pulp pH was adjusted to 8.5, and thus promoting the CMC adsorption on the talc surfaces, which further decreased its floatability.

Selective depression of calcite in a monazite-calcite flotation system was systematically studied using micro-flotation and electrokinetic tests as well as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization and solution chemistry calculations. Monazite was found to be depressed by both sodium silicate and sodium hexametaphosphate when calcium ions appeared in solution. It was hypothesized that co-adsorption of calcium species (CaHCO3+ and CaCO3(aq)) and Si ( OH ) 4 as well as SiO ( OH ) 3 - via hydrogen bonding formed a compact layer over the monazite surface, thereby reducing octanohydroxamic acid adsorption by steric hindrance. The use of citric acid or EDTA formed soluble chelates (e.g. CaCit− and CaEdta2−) with the calcium ions which negated the flotation suppression effect. An XPS study indicated that both EDTA and citric acid chemically adsorbed on the monazite surface, while the adsorption on the calcite surface was achieved mainly through hydrogen bonding. EDTA was more effective than citric acid due to two reasons: (i) citric acid itself presented stronger depression effects and (ii) citric acid has weaker chelating properties for calcium. Using 2.5 × 10−4 M octanohydroxamic acid, 0.05 g/L sodium silicate and 6 × 10−5 M EDTA, monazite recovery of more than 90% was achieved while recovering only 20% of the calcite.

Background: PVP (Percutaneous vertebroplasty) has been used to treat patients with OVCFs, however, we found that some patients did not significantly relieve back pain after surgery. The purpose of this paper is to explore the possible risk factors for residual low back pain after PVP and to Method: A retrospective study was conducted on 1120 patients hospitalized for osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture (OVCF) and treated with PVP between from July 2014 to June 2020 at our hospital. Baseline, clinical and surgical data were collected to analyze the factors associated with residual low back pain after PVP.Results: A total of 61 patients complained of residual low back pain, and the prevalence was 5.4%. Among the observed indices included, there were significant differences in preoperative thoracolumbar fascia injury (TFI) and a liquefaction signal on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the affected vertebrae; the number of responsible vertebrae and the distribution of bone cement were different between the two groups (PConclusion: TFI, a liquefaction signal on MRI of the affected vertebrae, the number of responsible vertebrae and the distribution pattern of bone cement could be risk factors for residual low back pain after PVP.

Objective: To study the curative effect of the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) Shashen Maidong Decoction in treating lung cancer cachexia based on the cancer toxicity theory, and analyze its influence on patients’ serum tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin 6 (IL-6). Methods: From January 2018 to January 2019, 104 patients with primary lung cancer cachexia diagnosed and treated in our hospital’s oncology department were selected and randomly divided into experimental group and control group, with 52 cases in each group. The control group received routine treatment and nutritional support, while the experimental group received Shashen Maidong Decoction plus. Indexes were compared and analyzed before and after 4 weeks of treatment, including TCM syndrome score, Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) score, Karnofsky score (KPS), albumin, prealbumin, TNF-α and IL-6 levels. Results: (1) After treatment, both groups’ PG-SGA score, KPS score and TCM syndrome score were better than those before treatment (P < 0.01), and the experimental group’s PG-SGA score, KPS score and TCM syndrome score were higher than those of the control group (P < 0.01). (2) After treatment, both groups’ serum albumin and prealbumin levels were higher than those before treatment (P < 0.05), and the experimental group’s prealbumin level was higher than that in the control group (P < 0.05). (3) After treatment, both groups’ serum levels of TNF-α and IL-6 were lower than those before treatment (P < 0.05), and the experimental group’s levels of TNF-α and IL-6 were lower than those in the control group (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Based on the cancer toxicity theory, the application of Shashen Maidong Decoction in treating lung cancer cachexia has definite therapeutic effects and important clinical values. It can effectively alleviate patients’ symptoms, improve nutritional status, and reduce body’s inflammatory response.

backgroundTo analyze and summarize the clinical features and diagnosis and treatment experience on primary intracranial and extracranial communicating leiomyosarcoma to deepen clinicians’understanding of the rare disease.Cases presentationThe clinical data and recurrence of a patient who was diagnosed with primary intracranial and extracranial communicating leiomyosarcoma admitted to the Neurosurgery Department, The Affiliated Ganmei Hospital of Kunming Medical University in May 2015 were retrospectively analyzed. According to the patient data, two successful surgical operations were performed and the surgeries went well, with more than 2-year and 8-month follow-up so far. No obvious complications were found after hospital discharge, and follow-up was continued.ConclusionsSurgical removal is the most important and effective treatment means for primary intracranial and extracranial communicating leiomyosarcoma currently.

Background. Relative to nondiabetic patients, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) is associated with inferior clinical outcomes. We aimed to evaluate the outcomes of drug-coated balloon (DCB) in diabetic versus nondiabetic patients. Methods and Results. In this observational, prospective, multicenter study, we compared the outcomes of patients with and without DM after undergoing PCI with DCBs. Target lesion failure (TLF) was analyzed as primary endpoint. Secondary endpoints were the rates of target lesion revascularization (TLR), major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), cardiac death, myocardial infarction (MI), and any revascularization. Propensity score matching was used to assemble a cohort of patients with similar baseline characteristics. Among 2,306 eligible patients, 578 with DM and 578 without DM had similar propensity scores and were included in the analyses. During follow-up ( 366 ± 46 days), compared with DM patients, patients without DM were associated with a lower yearly incidence of TLF (2.77% vs. 5.36%; OR, 1.991; 95% CI, 1.077 to 3.681; P = 0.025 ) and TLR (1.90% vs. 4.15%; OR, 2.233; 95% CI, 1.083 to 4.602; P = 0.026 ). No significant differences were observed with regards to rates of MACE (OR: 1.580, 95% CI: 0.912-2.735; P = 0.100 ), cardiac death (OR: 1.608, 95% CI: 0.523-4.946; P = 0.403 ), MI (OR: 4.042, 95% CI: 0.855-19.117; P = 0.057 ), and any revascularization (OR: 1.534, 95% CI: 0.983-2.393; P = 0.058 ). Conclusions. Diabetic patients experience higher TLF and TLR rates following DCB angioplasty without substantial increase in the risk of MACE, cardiac death, MI, or revascularization.

The recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) from the Western Kentucky No. 13 and Fire Clay coal wastes was enhanced by alkali pretreatment with concentrated NaOH solutions. The enhancements in the recovery of light REEs (LREEs) are more significant than those of heavy REEs (HREEs). For example, after treating with 5 M NaOH at 90 °C, the recovery of LREEs from the Western Kentucky No. 13 coal waste increased from 26% to 71%, while the recovery of HREEs only increased from 29% to 41%. Based on mineralogical studies through scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analyses, two mechanisms were proposed to explain the positive effect of alkali pretreatment: (1) decomposition of rare earth minerals (primarily crandallite-group minerals) during the alkali pretreatment, and (2) liberation of encapsulated REE-bearing particles due to the enhanced dissolution of clay minerals. The more significant enhancements in the recovery of LREEs were explained by the fact that the REEs comprised in the crandallite-group minerals were mainly LREEs. Compared with zircon, monazite, and xenotime, alkali pretreatment with 5 M NaOH led to a more significant decomposition of crandallite-group minerals. In order to further increase the recovery of REEs, particularly HREEs, harsher alkali treatment conditions are required.

The mineralogy of rare earth elements (REEs, including 15 lanthanides plus Sc and Y) in the Western Kentucky No. 13 and Fire Clay coal waste was studied based on elemental composition analyses using scanning electron microscopy- and transmission electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS and TEM-EDS). A total of 49 and 50 REE-bearing particles were found from the SEM-EDS specimens of the two materials, respectively. For both materials, light REEs were found in apatite, monazite, and crandallite-group minerals, while heavy REEs primarily existed in zircon and xenotime. Based on the number and REE contents of the REE-bearing particles, it was concluded that monazite, xenotime, and crandallite-group minerals were major contributors to the total REE contents in both materials. The number of crandallite-group mineral particles found from the Western Kentucky No. 13 material was more than that of monazite and xenotime particles. However, for the Fire Clay material, the number and size of crandallite-group mineral particles were close to those of monazite and xenotime particles. Since the monazite and xenotime particles contained more REEs relative to the crandallite-group mineral particles, it was inferred that the majority of the REEs, especially the light REEs, existing in the Fire Clay coal waste occurred as monazite and xenotime. In addition, comparing with the Western Kentucky No. 13 material, a larger portion of the heavy REEs in the Fire Clay material were comprised in zircon. SEM images of the REE-bearing particles indicated that both liberated particles and particles locked within dominant minerals (e.g., clays) existed in the two materials. A few of the particles found in the Western Kentucky No. 13 material were completely encapsulated within the dominant minerals. Findings from the current study will promote REE recovery from coal-related materials, particularly coal waste.
