- Abstract
Miscarriages are not uncommon, a minimum of 20 % of all pregnancies are affected. Depending on the course of the pregnancy and the circumstances of the misbirth different interventions are possible/required. Likewise, the time after a miscarriage is experienced very differently and goes a long with a variety of complications. In the osteopathic practice we are also confronted with couples after the loss of a child and can contribute to supporting them in their situation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Micro-X is a NASA-funded, sounding rocket-borne X-ray imaging spectrometer that will allow high precision measurements of velocity structure, ionization state and elemental composition of extended astrophysical systems. One of the biggest challenges in payload design is to maintain the temperature of the detectors during launch. There are several vibration damping stages to prevent energy transmission from the rocket skin to the detector stage, which causes heating during launch. Each stage should be more rigid than the outer stages to achieve vibrational isolation. We describe a major design effort to tune the resonance frequencies of these vibration isolation stages to reduce heating problems prior to the projected launch in the summer of 2014.

- Abstract
The Micro-X High Resolution Microcalorimeter X-ray Imaging Rocket is a sounding rocket experiment that will combine a transition-edge-sensor X-ray-microcalorimeter array with a conical imaging mirror to obtain high- spectral-resolution images of extended X-ray sources. The target for Micro-X’s first flight (slated for January 2013) is the Puppis A supernova remnant. The Micro-X observation of the bright eastern knot of Puppis A will obtain a line-dominated spectrum with up to 27,000 counts collected in 300 seconds at 2 eV resolution across the 0.3-2.5 keV band. Micro-X will determine the thermodynamic and ionization state of the plasma, search for line shifts and broadening associated with dynamical processes, and seek evidence of ejecta enhancement. We describe the progress made in developing this payload, including the detector, cryogenics, and electronics assemblies., United States. 61. Dilution Refrigeration of Multi-Ton Cold Masses

Engineering - Abstract
Dilution refrigeration is the only means to provide continuous cooling at temperatures below 250 mK. Future experiments featuring multi-ton cold masses require a new generation of dilution refrigeration systems, capable of providing a heat sink below 10 mK at cooling powers which exceed the performance of present systems considerably. This thesis presents some advances towards dilution refrigeration of multi-ton masses in this temperature range. A new method using numerical simulation to predict the cooling power of a dilution refrigerator of a given design has been developed in the framework of this thesis project. This method does not only allow to take into account the differences between an actual and an ideal continuous heat exchanger, but also to quantify the impact of an additional heat load on an intermediate section of the dilute stream. In addition, transient behavior can be simulated. The numerical model has been experimentally verified with a dilution refrigeration system which has been designed, built and tested at CERN in the framework of this doctoral thesis project. Furthermore, the determination of the residual heat load to the cold mass of a very low temperature (VLT) experiment is addressed. The results of this analysis can be used to predict the required cooling power for large future experiments. Based on the experience gained with the dilution refrigeration system at CERN, design rules for large dilution refrigerators have been derived. They are consequently used in a design and feasibility study of a refrigeration system, which is tailored for the future cryogenic dark matter search EURECA and meets the requirements of low background experiments and operation in remote underground laboratories. This doctoral thesis project has been funded CERN and by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Culture.

EURECA (European Underground Rare Event Calorimeter Array) is a new project, searching for dark matter, with largely the present groups of the CRESST and EDELWEISS experiments and already a few new groups. The aim is to explore scalar cross sections in the 10(-9) - 10(-10) pico-barn region with a target mass of up to one tonne. A major advantage of EURECA is our planned use of more that just one target material (multi target experiment for WIMP identification). In preparation for this large-scale experiment, RandD for EURECA is provided through the current phases of CRESST and EDELWEISS.

- Abstract
Early childhood regulation disorder is a term that is used for babies with sleeping, feeding and stooling problems, failure to thrive and/or chronic anxiety. The following pilot study was carried out to investigate the effectivity of a osteopathic treatment (local/systemic) in comparison to no treatment. Based on the treatment of the examinees (each group consisting of five children) a very first trend regarding the positive effect of osteopathic treatment was shown. This trend was described in a screaming journal kept by the parents. Within the testing period the local treatment group (IG1) showed an improvement after the second treatment. The systematic treatment group (IG2) showed improvement after the third treatment. However, at the end of this study the IG2 showed better results than the IG1 (54% to 58%). The control group presented an improvement by 18%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The CDMS and EDELWEISS collaborations have combined the results of their direct searches for dark matter using cryogenic germanium detectors. The total data set represents 614kg•days equivalent exposure. A straightforward method of combination was chosen for its simplicity before data were exchanged between experiments. The results are interpreted in terms of limits on spin-independent weakly interacting, massive particle (WIMP)-nucleon cross section. For a WIMP mass of 90GeV/c2, where this analysis is most sensitive, a cross section of 3.3×10-44cm2 is excluded at 90% C.L. At higher WIMP masses, the combination improves the individual limits, by a factor 1.6 above 700GeV/c2. Alternative methods of combining the data provide stronger constraints for some ranges of WIMP masses and weaker constraints for others. © 2011 American Physical Society.

- Abstract
For the daily contact with patients osteopaths need a high degree of social skills. The interaction between patient and osteopath happens rather intuitively than consciously, targeted and controllable. The primary research question of this study is: Do empathic skills play a specific roll for osteopaths in general and are osteopaths aware of the importance of these skills? The corresponding hypothesis is, that osteopaths use empathic skills, but are not aware of them and cannot use them purposeful. The intention of this study is to create a sensibility for integrating social skills into osteopathic education. The research question was investigated empirically using guided interviews. The results were evaluated by a qualitative content analysis according to Mayring. The results confirmed the assumption. All osteopaths acknowledge the value of empathic skills during osteopathic treatment and interaction with patients. But because of a lack of instruction during osteopathic education, they do not use empathic skills deliberately. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a study on the relationship between the amount of coal particle breakdown obtained and vertical vehicle acceleration. An in-service rail transport company Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) coal train was examined with accelerometers when travelling between Vryheid and Ermelo in South Africa to record forces experienced by a coal wagon. The study reveals that the track section between railway stations is retained well because only isolated acceleration spikes were recorded.

86. STANDOFF ATTACKS BY PLAN ON SOUTH AFRICAN SECURITY FORCE BASES DURING THE SWA/NAMIBIAN "BUSH WAR" (1966 TO 1989).

van Rensburg, Wikus Jansen
- Abstract
After World War 1 (1920), South Africa (SA) was granted a Class C-mandate by the League of Nations to administer the affairs of South West Africa (SWA) (now Namibia). During the middle sixties (1966) and early seventies (1972), the South West Africa Peoples Organisation (SWAPO), through its' armed military wing -- the Peoples Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN), started resisting through military means by executing armed assaults on the South African Police (SAP) and civilians. This escalated to such an extent that the South African Defence Force (SADF) was tasked to take over the northern border protection during 1974. The armed resistance by PLAN was typical of guerilla warfare and included numerous standoff attacks on the SADF, the SAP and South West Africa Police (SWAPOL) bases. Although numerous actions typical of guerilla warfare, like ambushes, hit-and-run attacks, land-mine incidents, acts of sabotage and intimidation of the local population were launched in SWA/Namibia during the Bush War, this article mainly focuses on standoff attacks by PLAN on SADF/SAP/SWAPOL bases and the kraals of tribal chiefs protected by local militia within SWA/Namibia. These types of attack were typical of guerilla warfare tactics. Other types of guerilla warfare tactics are briefly referred to. More than 161 standoff attacks on the SADF/SAP/SWAPOL bases were launched by PLAN over the 23 year period of the Bush War. Measured against the "attack the rear areas of the enemy to exhaust and to demoralise them" tactic of guerilla warfare, one can hardly claim that PLAN were successful in doing so. - Abstract
We are observing a significant increase in the deployment of large scale solar and wind technologies in the global south, and it is therefore a strategically and academically important focus of inquiry to understand context-specific spaces for locally-embedded actors to initiate energy transitions. This paper examines the linkages between the energy transition and economic development, and has attempted to do this by developing an approach that brought into focus the institutional micro-economics of four key dimensions of the economic development process, namely (a) the impact of the auction mechanism; (b) the key role MNCs play in the global value chain; (c) how developmentally-oriented states have attempted to harness the resulting investment flows by using LCRs; and (d) the local-level development impacts of utility-scale renewable energy power plants on local communities.

- Abstract
On the presence of Hierochloë odorata (L.) Beauv. in Italy.—H. odorata has been found in an oligotrophic marsh in the Italian part of the Eastern Alps and therefore definitively confirmed for the flora of Italy. An extended population occurs at 1800 m above sea level near Misurina, in the Dolomites (province of Belluno). All preceding records of H. odorata for the Italian flora must be referred to H. australis (Schrader) R.&S. Differential characters and distribution of the two species are shortly discussed.

- Abstract
Polygonum nepalense Meisn. has been found naturalteed together with Collomia linearis Nutt. near Belluno, Northern Italy. Polygonum nepalense belongs to the Cephalophilon-Section, an annual with creeping-ascending branched stems, winged petioles and 2 rounded, basal auricles, leaf-blade ovate-triangular, somehow fleshy, ochreas tubular with a tuft of hairs at the base, peduncles glandular-pubescent; spikes globose, densely flowered, styles 2 (seldom 3), nutlets trigonous, dark-brown, about 1-1.5 mm long. This species has not been indicated yet in the Alps but is cited as a rather common one in humid localities, damp woods in mountains, tea- and chinchona-plantations in Asia and India. Abundant on the Himalaya up to 10,000 ft., known also in Bengal, Ceylon, Assam, Burma, China, Java, Formosa, Japan and Abyssinia.

96. Osteopathie in Österreich – rechtliche Grundlage und Ausblick.

- Abstract
In Austria, the practice of osteopathy is not fully regulated at the present moment. So far there is no officially accepted training in osteopathy – osteopaths have to refer to their primary medical profession. Therefor osteopaths are subject to different legal regulations, the situation arises questions of legal differentiation and leaves room for interpretation. The call to a connecting, uniform legislation regarding osteopathic education and professional practice is getting louder among experts and for the purpose of patient's safety. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Cyclic β-sheet decapeptides, such as tyrocidines and gramicidin S, were among the first antibiotics in clinical application. Although they have been used for such a long time, there is virtually no resistance to them, which has led to a renewed interest in this peptide class. Both tyrocidines and gramicidin S are thought to disrupt the bacterial membrane. However, this knowledge is mainly derived from in vitrostudies, and there is surprisingly little knowledge about how these long-established antibiotics kill bacteria. Our results shed new light on the antibacterial mechanism of β-sheet peptide antibiotics and explain why they are still so effective and why there is so little resistance to them.

- Abstract
Sub‐Saharan Africa desperately needs more electricity. Recent years have seen private investment in renewable energy projects breaking through in the region, primarily driven by well‐designed and implemented auction programs. We review three renewable energy auction programs in the region to improve our understanding of the auction design and implementation elements that have enabled this important transition: the South African Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement Program (REIPPPP); the GET FiT solar facility in Uganda; and the first round of the Scaling Solar program in Zambia. Our analysis shows that a well‐designed and implemented program that adequately deals with risks for both the procuring authorities and investors is able to deliver good investment and price outcomes in sub‐Saharan Africa. This article is categorized under: Photovoltaics > Climate and EnvironmentEnergy Policy and Planning > Climate and EnvironmentPhotovoltaics > Economics and PolicyEnergy Policy and Planning > Economics and Policy Weighted average bid tariffs for REIPPPP Rounds 1 ‐ 4 (excl.
