Search

Spatiotemporal sculpturing of light pulse with ultimately sophisticated structures represents the holy grail of the human everlasting pursue of ultrafast information transmission and processing as well as ultra-intense energy concentration and extraction. It also holds the key to unlock new extraordinary fundamental physical effects. Traditionally, spatiotemporal light pulses are always treated as spatiotemporally separable wave packet as solution of the Maxwell's equations. In the past decade, however, more generalized forms of spatiotemporally nonseparable solution started to emerge with growing importance for their striking physical effects. We report the results of James Webb Space Telescope/NIRCam observations of 19 (sub)millimeter (submm/mm) sources detected by the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). The accurate ALMA positions allowed unambiguous identifications of their NIRCam counterparts. Taking gravitational lensing into account, these represent 16 distinct galaxies in three fields and constitute the largest sample of its kind to date. The counterparts' spectral energy distributions from rest-frame ultraviolet to near infrared provide photometric redshifts ($110^{10.5}$ Msol), which are similar to sub-millimeter galaxy (SMG) hosts studied previously. However, our sample is fainter in submm/mm than the classic SMG samples are, and our sources exhibit a wider range of properties. They have dust-embedded star-formation rates as low as 10 Msol yr$^{-1}$, and the sources populate both the star-forming main sequence and the quiescent categories. The deep NIRCam data allow us to study the rest-frame near-IR morphologies. Excluding two multiply imaged systems and one quasar, the majority of the remaining sources are disk-like and show either little or no disturbance. This suggests that secular growth is a potential route for the assembly of high-mass disk galaxies. While a few hosts have large disks, the majority have small disks (median half-mass radius of 1.6 kpc). At this time, it is unclear whether this is due to the prevalence of small disks at these redshifts or some unknown selection effects of deep ALMA observations. The first JWST data on the massive colliding cluster El Gordo confirm 23 known families of multiply lensed images and identify 8 new members of these families. Based on these families, which have been confirmed spectroscopically by MUSE, we derived an initial lens model. This model guided the identification of 37 additional families of multiply lensed galaxies, among which 28 are entirely new systems, and 9 were previously known. The initial lens model determined geometric redshifts for the 37 new systems. The geometric redshifts agree reasonably well with spectroscopic or photometric redshifts when those are available. The geometric redshifts enable two additional models that include all 60 families of multiply lensed galaxies spanning a redshift range $20.8$ and has an estimated virial mass close the maximum mass allowed by standard cosmological models. The JWST images also reveal the presence of small-mass perturbers that produce small lensing distortions. The smallest of these is consistent with being a dwarf galaxy at $z=0.87$ and has an estimated mass of $3.8\times10^9$~\Msol, making it the smallest substructure found at $z>0.5$. The JWST images also show several candidate caustic-crossing events. One of them is detected at high significance at the expected position of the critical curve and is likely a red supergiant star at $z=2.1878$. This would be the first red supergiant found at cosmological distances. The cluster lensing should magnify background objects at $z>6$, making more of them visible than in blank fields of similar size, but there appears to be a deficiency of such objects., Comment: 27 pages, 21 figures

We give an overview and describe the rationale, methods, and first results from NIRCam images of the JWST "Prime Extragalactic Areas for Reionization and Lensing Science" ("PEARLS") project. PEARLS uses up to eight NIRCam filters to survey several prime extragalactic survey areas: two fields at the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP); seven gravitationally lensing clusters; two high redshift proto-clusters; and the iconic backlit VV 191 galaxy system to map its dust attenuation. PEARLS also includes NIRISS spectra for one of the NEP fields and NIRSpec spectra of two high-redshift quasars. The main goal of PEARLS is to study the epoch of galaxy assembly, AGN growth, and First Light. Five fields, the JWST NEP Time-Domain Field (TDF), IRAC Dark Field (IDF), and three lensing clusters, will be observed in up to four epochs over a year. The cadence and sensitivity of the imaging data are ideally suited to find faint variable objects such as weak AGN, high-redshift supernovae, and cluster caustic transits. Both NEP fields have sightlines through our Galaxy, providing significant numbers of very faint brown dwarfs whose proper motions can be studied. Observations from the first spoke in the NEP TDF are public. This paper presents our first PEARLS observations, their NIRCam data reduction and analysis, our first object catalogs, the 0.9-4.5 $\mu$m galaxy counts and Integrated Galaxy Light. We assess the JWST sky brightness in 13 NIRCam filters, yielding our first constraints to diffuse light at 0.9-4.5 {\mu}m. Using the first epoch of four-band NIRCam observations obtained by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Prime Extragalactic Areas for Reionization and Lensing Science Program in the Spitzer IRAC Dark Field, we search for F150W and F200W dropouts. In 14.2 arcmin^2, we have found eight F150W dropouts and eight F200W dropouts, all brighter than 27.5 mag (the brightest being ~24 mag) in the band to the red side of the break. As they are detected in multiple bands, these must be real objects. Their nature, however, is unclear, and characterizing their properties is important for realizing the full potential of JWST. If the observed color decrements are due to the Lyman break, these objects should be at z >~ 11.7 and z >~ 15.4, respectively. The color diagnostics show that at least four F150W dropouts are far away from the usual contaminators encountered in dropout searches (red galaxies at much lower redshifts or brown dwarf stars). While the diagnostics of the F200W dropouts are less certain due to the limited number of passbands, at least one of them is likely not a known type of contaminant, and the rest are consistent with either high-redshift galaxies with evolved stellar populations or old galaxies at z ~ 3 to 8. If a significant fraction of our dropouts are indeed at z ~ 12, we have to face the severe problem of explaining their high luminosities and number densities. We derive the spatial and wavelength behavior of dust attenuation in the multiple-armed spiral galaxy VV191b using backlighting by the superimposed elliptical system VV191a in a pair with an exceptionally favorable geometry for this measurement. Imaging using JWST and HST spans the wavelength range 0.3-4.5 microns with high angular resolution, tracing the dust in detail from 0.6 to 1.5 microns. Distinct dust lanes continue well beyond the bright spiral arms, and trace a complex web, with a very sharp radial cutoff near 1.7 Petrosian radii. We present attenuation profiles and coverage statistics in each band at radii 14-21 kpc. We derive the attenuation law with wavelength; the data both within and between the dust lanes clearly favor a stronger reddening behavior (R ~ 2.0 between 0.6 and 0.9 microns, approaching unity by 1.5 microns) than found for starbursts and star-forming regions of galaxies. Power-law extinction behavior lambda^(-beta) gives beta=2.1 from 0.6-0.9 microns. R decreases at increasing wavelengths (R~1.1 between 0.9 and 1.5 microns), while beta steepens to 2.5. Mixing regions of different column density flattens the wavelength behavior, so these results suggest a different grain population than in our vicinity. The NIRCam images reveal a lens arc and counterimage from a background galaxy at z~1, spanning 90 degrees azimuthally at 2.8" from the foreground elliptical galaxy nucleus, and an additional weakly-lensed galaxy. The lens model and imaging data give a mass/light ratio 7.6 in solar units within the Einstein radius 2.0 kpc., Comment: Accepted by Astron. J. To understand the impact of active galactic nuclei (AGN) on their host galaxies and large scale environment it is crucial to determine their total radiative power across all wavelengths (i.e., bolometric luminosity). In this contribution we describe how quasar accretion disk spectral energy distribution (SED) templates, parameterized by the black hole (BH) mass, Eddington ratio, and spin can be used to estimate their total radiated luminosity. To estimate the bolometric luminosity of AGN, we integrate the accretion disk SEDs from 1$\mu$m to 10keV. Our approach self-consistently covers any gaps in observations and does not include reprocessed emission from the torus. The accretion disk SED, and consequently the bolometric correction inferred from it, strongly depend on the BH mass, the Eddington ratio, and spin. In particular, the bolometric correction in the visible bands (5100$\,\mathring{A}$ and 3000$\,\mathring{A}$) strongly depends on BH mass, and at X-ray strongly depends on the Eddington ratio. At wavelengths closer to the peak of the accretion disk SED the dependence becomes weaker. Additionally, maximally-rotating (spin = 1) quasars require a higher bolometric correction than their non-rotating (spin = 0) counterparts at all wavelengths. The SEDs and the bolometric correction presented in this work can determine the radiative power of any sample of radio-quiet to radio-loud Type 1 AGN with observations in the range from 1$\mu$m to 10$\,$keV provided the observations are corrected for extinction.

We report timing analysis of near-infrared (NIR), X-ray, and sub-millimeter (submm) data during a three-day coordinated campaign observing Sagittarius A*. Data were collected at 4.5 micron with the Spitzer Space Telescope, 2-8 keV with the Chandra X-ray Observatory, 3-70 keV with NuSTAR, 340 GHz with ALMA, and at 2.2 micron with the GRAVITY instrument on the Very Large Telescope Interferometer. Two dates show moderate variability with no significant lags between the submm and the infrared at 99% confidence. July 18 captured a moderately bright NIR flare (F_K ~ 15 mJy) simultaneous with an X-ray flare (F ~ 0.1 cts/s) that most likely preceded bright submm flux (F ~ 5.5 Jy) by about +34 (+14 -33) minutes at 99% confidence. The uncertainty in this lag is dominated by the fact that we did not observe the peak of the submm emission. A synchrotron source cooled through adiabatic expansion can describe a rise in the submm once the synchrotron-self-Compton NIR and X-ray peaks have faded. This model predicts high GHz and THz fluxes at the time of the NIR/X-ray peak and electron densities well above those implied from average accretion rates for Sgr A*. However, the higher electron density postulated in this scenario would be in agreement with the idea that 2019 was an extraordinary epoch with a heightened accretion rate. Since the NIR and X-ray peaks can also be fit by a non-thermal synchrotron source with lower electron densities, we cannot rule out an unrelated chance coincidence of this bright submm flare with the NIR/X-ray emission., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

The COVID-19 pandemic has had high mortality rates in the elderly and frail worldwide, particularly in care homes. This is driven by the difficulty of isolating care homes from the wider community, the large population sizes within care facilities (relative to typical households), and the age/frailty of the residents. To quantify the mortality risk posed by disease, the case fatality risk (CFR) is an important tool. This quantifies the proportion of cases that result in death. Throughout the pandemic, CFR amongst care home residents in England has been monitored closely. To estimate CFR, we apply both novel and existing methods to data on deaths in care homes, collected by Public Health England and the Care Quality Commission. We compare these different methods, evaluating their relative strengths and weaknesses. Using these methods, we estimate temporal trends in the instantaneous CFR (at both daily and weekly resolutions) and the overall CFR across the whole of England, and dis-aggregated at regional level. We also investigate how the CFR varies based on age and on the type of care required, dis-aggregating by whether care homes include nursing staff and by age of residents. This work has contributed to the summary of measures used for monitoring the UK epidemic.

We investigate differences in Spitzer/IRAC 3.6 and 4.5micron photometry that depend on observing strategy. Using archival calibration data we perform an in-depth examination of the measured flux densities ("fluxes") of ten calibration stars, observed with all the possible observing strategies. We then quantify differences in the measured fluxes as a function of 1) array mode (full or subarray), 2) exposure time, and 3) dithering versus staring observations. We find that the median fluxes measured for sources observed using the full array are 1.6% and 1% lower than those observed with the subarray at [3.6] and [4.5], respectively. Additionally, we found a dependence on the exposure time such that for [3.6] observations the long frame times are measured to be lower than the short frame times by a median value of 3.4% in full array and 2.9% in subarray. For [4.5] observations the longer frame times are 0.6% and 1.5% in full and subarray respectively. These very small variations will likely only affect science users who require high-precision photometry from multiple different observing modes. We find no statistically significant difference for fluxes obtained with dithered and staring-modes. When considering all stars in the sample, the fractional well depth of the pixel is correlated with the different observed fluxes. We speculate the cause to be a small non-linearity in the pixels at the lowest well depths where deviations from linearity were previously assumed to be negligible., Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures, JATIS accepted

We report the time-resolved spectral analysis of a bright near-infrared and moderate X-ray flare of Sgr A*. We obtained light curves in the $M$-, $K$-, and $H$-bands in the mid- and near-infrared and in the $2-8~\mathrm{keV}$ and $2-70~\mathrm{keV}$ bands in the X-ray. The observed spectral slope in the near-infrared band is $\nu L_\nu\propto \nu^{0.5\pm0.2}$; the spectral slope observed in the X-ray band is $\nu L_\nu \propto \nu^{-0.7\pm0.5}$. We tested synchrotron and synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) scenarios. The observed near-infrared brightness and X-ray faintness, together with the observed spectral slopes, pose challenges for all models explored. We rule out a scenario in which the near-infrared emission is synchrotron emission and the X-ray emission is SSC. A one-zone model in which both the near-infrared and X-ray luminosity are produced by SSC and a model in which the luminosity stems from a cooled synchrotron spectrum can explain the flare. In order to describe the mean SED, both models require specific values of the maximum Lorentz factor $\gamma_{max}$, which however differ by roughly two orders of magnitude: the SSC model suggests that electrons are accelerated to $\gamma_{max}\sim 500$, while cooled synchrotron model requires acceleration up to $\gamma_{max}\sim5\times 10^{4}$. The SSC scenario requires electron densities of $10^{10}~\mathrm{cm^{-3}}$ much larger than typical ambient densities in the accretion flow, and thus require in an extraordinary accretion event. In contrast, assuming a source size of $1R_s$, the cooled synchrotron scenario can be realized with densities and magnetic fields comparable with the ambient accretion flow. For both models, the temporal evolution is regulated through the maximum acceleration factor $\gamma_{max}$, implying that sustained particle acceleration is required to explain at least a part of the temporal evolution of the flare., Comment: accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics; preview abstract shortened due to arXiv requirements

We constrain the mass distribution in nearby, star-forming galaxies with the Star Formation Reference Survey (SFRS), a galaxy sample constructed to be representative of all known combinations of star formation rate (SFR), dust temperature, and specific star formation rate (sSFR) that exist in the Local Universe. An innovative two-dimensional bulge/disk decomposition of the 2MASS/$K_{s}$-band images of the SFRS galaxies yields global luminosity and stellar mass functions, along with separate mass functions for their bulges and disks. These accurate mass functions cover the full range from dwarf galaxies to large spirals, and are representative of star-forming galaxies selected based on their infra-red luminosity, unbiased by AGN content and environment. We measure an integrated luminosity density $j$ = 1.72 $\pm$ 0.93 $\times$ 10$^{9}$ L$_{\odot}$ $h^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-3}$ and a total stellar mass density $\rho_{M}$ = 4.61 $\pm$ 2.40 $\times$ 10$^{8}$ M$_{\odot}$ $h^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-3}$. While the stellar mass of the \emph{average} star-forming galaxy is equally distributed between its sub-components, disks globally dominate the mass density budget by a ratio 4:1 with respect to bulges. In particular, our functions suggest that recent star formation happened primarily in massive systems, where they have yielded a disk stellar mass density larger than that of bulges by more than 1 dex. We present new H$\alpha$ photometry for the Star-Formation Reference Survey (SFRS), a representative sample of star-forming galaxies in the local Universe. Combining these data with the panchromatic coverage of the SFRS, we provide calibrations of H$\alpha$-based star-formation rates (SFRs) with and without correction for the contribution of [$\rm N_{^{II}}$] emission. We consider the effect of extinction corrections based on the Balmer decrement, infrared excess (IRX), and spectral energy distribution (SED) fits. We compare the SFR estimates derived from SED fits, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, hybrid indicators such as 24 $\mu$m + H$\alpha$, 8 $\mu$m + H$\alpha$, FIR + FUV, and H$\alpha$ emission for a sample of purely star-forming galaxies. We provide a new calibration for 1.4 GHz-based SFRs by comparing to the H$\alpha$ emission, and we measure a dependence of the radio-to-H$\alpha$ emission ratio based on galaxy stellar mass. Active galactic nuclei introduce biases in the calibrations of different SFR indicators but have only a minimal effect on the inferred SFR densities from galaxy surveys. New MMT/Hectospec spectroscopy centered on the galaxy cluster A2626 and covering a ${\sim} 1.8\,\text{deg}^2$ area out to $z \sim 0.46$ more than doubles the number of galaxy redshifts in this region. The spectra confirm four clusters previously identified photometrically. A2625, which was previously thought to be a close neighbor of A2626, is in fact much more distant. The new data show six substructures associated with A2626 and five more associated with A2637. There is also a highly collimated collection of galaxies and galaxy groups between A2626 and A2637 having at least three and probably four substructures. Low-frequency radio selection finds radio-bright galaxies regardless of the amount of obscuration by gas and dust. We report \chandra\ observations of a complete 178~MHz-selected, and so orientation unbiased, sample of 44 $0.5

Modern microelectronic processors have migrated towards parallel computing architectures with many-core processors. However, such expansion comes with diminishing returns exacted by the high cost of data movement between individual processors. The use of optical interconnects has burgeoned as a promising technology that can address the limits of this data transfer. While recent pushes to enhance optical communication have focused on developing wavelength-division multiplexing technology, this approach will eventually saturate the usable bandwidth, and new dimensions of data transfer will be paramount to fulfill the ever-growing need for speed. Here we demonstrate an integrated intra- and inter-chip multi-dimensional communication scheme enabled by photonic inverse design. Using inverse-designed mode-division multiplexers, we combine wavelength- and mode- multiplexing and send massively parallel data through nano-photonic waveguides and optical fibres. Crucially, as we take advantage of an orthogonal optical basis, our approach is inherently scalable to a multiplicative enhancement over the current state of the art., Comment: Fig.2-4 present new experimental results -- (i) demonstration of a broadband, low cross-talk multiplexer, (ii) a silicon photonic mode-division multiplexing with a chip-scale soliton microcomb source, and (iii) a chip-to-chip optical interconnect using a multimode-matched fibre and inverse-designed beam couplers

We describe a complete, flux-density-limited sample of galaxies at redshift $0.8 < z < 1.3$ selected at 16 micron. At the selection wavelength near 8 micron rest, the observed emission comes both from dust heated by intense star formation and from active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Fitting the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the sample galaxies to local-galaxy templates reveals that more than half the galaxies have SEDs dominated by star formation. About one sixth of the galaxy SEDs are dominated by an AGN, and nearly all the rest of the SEDs are composite. Comparison with X-ray and far-infrared observations shows that combinations of luminosities at rest-frame 4.5 and 8 micron give good measures of both AGN luminosity and star-formation rate. The sample galaxies mostly follow the established star-forming main sequence for $z=1$ galaxies, but of the galaxies more than 0.5 dex above that main sequence, more than half have AGN-type SEDs. Similarly, the most luminous AGNs tend to have higher star-formation rates than the main sequence value. Galaxies with stellar masses $>$10$^{11}$\,\Msun\ are unlikely to host an AGN. About 1% of the sample galaxies show an SED with dust emission typical of neither star formation nor an AGN., Comment: 14 pages, 5 tables, 29 figures, ApJ accepted v2 corrects author name formatting

Atmospheric turbulence generally limits free-space optical (FSO) communications, and this problem is severely exacerbated when implementing highly sensitive and spectrally efficient coherent detection. Specifically, turbulence induces power coupling from the transmitted Gaussian mode to higher-order Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) modes, resulting in a significant decrease of the power that mixes with a single-mode local oscillator (LO). Instead, we transmit a frequency-offset Gaussian pilot tone along with the data signal, such that both experience similar turbulence and modal power coupling. Subsequently, the photodetector (PD) optoelectronically mixes all corresponding pairs of the beams' modes. During mixing, a conjugate of the turbulence experienced by the pilot tone is automatically generated and compensates the turbulence experienced by the data, and nearly all orders of the same corresponding modes efficiently mix. We demonstrate a 12-Gbit/s 16-quadrature-amplitude-modulation (16-QAM) polarization-multiplexed (PolM) FSO link that exhibits resilience to emulated turbulence. Experimental results for turbulence D/r_0~5.5 show up to ~20 dB reduction in the mixing power loss over a conventional coherent receiver. Therefore, our approach automatically recovers nearly all the captured data power to enable high-performance coherent FSO systems.

Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) is the variable radio, near-infrared (NIR), and X-ray source associated with accretion onto the Galactic center black hole. We have analyzed a comprehensive submillimeter (including new observations simultaneous with NIR monitoring), NIR, and 2-8 keV dataset. Submillimeter variations tend to lag those in the NIR by $\sim$30 minutes. An approximate Bayesian computation (ABC) fit to the X-ray first-order structure function shows significantly less power at short timescales in the X-rays than in the NIR. Less X-ray variability at short timescales combined with the observed NIR-X-ray correlations means the variability can be described as the result of two strictly correlated stochastic processes, the X-ray process being the low-pass-filtered version of the NIR process. The NIR--X-ray linkage suggests a simple radiative model: a compact, self-absorbed synchrotron sphere with high-frequency cutoff close to NIR frequencies plus a synchrotron self-Compton scattering component at higher frequencies. This model, with parameters fit to the submillimeter, NIR, and X-ray structure functions, reproduces the observed flux densities at all wavelengths, the statistical properties of all light curves, and the time lags between bands. The fit also gives reasonable values for physical parameters such as magnetic flux density $B\approx13$ G, source size $L \approx2.2R_{S}$, and high-energy electron density $n_{e}\approx4\times10^{7}$ cm$^{-3}$. While information is ubiquitously generated, shared, and analyzed in a modern-day life, there is still some controversy around the ways to asses the amount and quality of information inside a noisy optical channel. A number of theoretical approaches based on, e.g., conditional Shannon entropy and Fisher information have been developed, along with some experimental validations. Some of these approaches are limited to a certain alphabet, while others tend to fall short when considering optical beams with non-trivial structure, such as Hermite-Gauss, Laguerre-Gauss and other modes with non-trivial structure. Here, we propose a new definition of classical Shannon information via the Wigner distribution function, while respecting the Heisenberg inequality. Following this definition, we calculate the amount of information in a Gaussian, Hermite-Gaussian, and Laguerre-Gaussian laser modes in juxtaposition and experimentally validate it by reconstruction of the Wigner distribution function from the intensity distribution of structured laser beams. We experimentally demonstrate the technique that allows to infer field structure of the laser beams in singular optics to assess the amount of contained information. Given the generality, this approach of defining information via analyzing the beam complexity is applicable to laser modes of any topology that can be described by 'well-behaved' functions. Classical Shannon information defined in this way is detached from a particular alphabet, i.e. communication scheme, and scales with the structural complexity of the system. Such a synergy between the Wigner distribution function encompassing the information in both real and reciprocal space, and information being a measure of disorder, can contribute into future coherent detection algorithms and remote sensing.

Tipping elements occur in various systems such as in socio-economics, ecology and the climate system. In many cases, the individual tipping elements are not independent from each other, but they interact across scales in time and space. To model systems of interacting tipping elements, we here introduce the PyCascades open source software package for studying interacting tipping elements (doi: 10.5281/zenodo.4153102). PyCascades is an object-oriented and easily extendable package written in the programming language Python. It allows for investigating under which conditions potentially dangerous cascades can emerge between interacting dynamical systems, with a focus on tipping elements. With PyCascades it is possible to use different types of tipping elements such as double-fold and Hopf types and interactions between them. PyCascades can be applied to arbitrary complex network structures and has recently been extended to stochastic dynamical systems. This paper provides an overview of the functionality of PyCascades by introducing the basic concepts and the methodology behind it. In the end, three examples are discussed, showing three different applications of the software package. First, the moisture recycling network of the Amazon rainforest is investigated. Second, a model of interacting Earth system tipping elements is discussed. And third, the PyCascades modelling framework is applied to a global trade network.

The orbital angular momentum (OAM) of photons presents a degree of freedom for enhancing the secure key rate of free-space quantum key distribution (QKD) through mode-division multiplexing (MDM). However, atmospheric turbulence can lead to substantial modal crosstalk, which is a long-standing challenge to MDM for free-space QKD. Here, we show that the digital generation of time-reversed wavefronts for multiple probe beams is an effective method for mitigating atmospheric turbulence. We experimentally characterize seven OAM modes after propagation through a 340-m outdoor free-space link and observe an average modal crosstalk as low as 13.2% by implementing real-time time reversal. The crosstalk can be further reduced to 3.4% when adopting a mode spacing $\Delta \ell$ of 2. We implement a classical MDM system as a proof-of-principle demonstration, and the bit error rate is reduced from $3.6\times 10^{-3}$ to be less than $1.3\times 10^{-7}$ through the use of time reversal. We also propose a practical and scalable scheme for high-speed, mode-multiplexed QKD through a turbulent link. The modal crosstalk can be further reduced by using faster equipment. The Mars Express (MEX) mission has been successfully operated around Mars since 2004. Among many results, MEX has provided some of the most accurate astrometric data of the two Mars moons, Phobos and Deimos. In this work we present new ephemerides of Mars' moons benefitting from all previously published astrometric data to the most recent MEX SRC data. All in all, observations from 1877 until 2018 and including spacecraft measurements from Mariner 9 to MEX were included. Assuming a homogeneous interior, we fitted Phobos' forced libration amplitude simultaneously with the Martian tidal k2/Q ratio and the initial state of the moons. Our solution of the physical libration 1.09 +/- 0.01 degrees deviates notably from the homogeneous solution. But considering the very low error bar, this may essentially suggest the necessity to consider higher order harmonics, with an improved rotation model, in the future. While most data could be successfully fitted, we found a disagreement between the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and the Mars Express astrometric data at the kilometer level probably associated with a biased phase correction. The present solution precision is expected at the level of a few hundreds of meters for Phobos and several hundreds of meters for Deimos for the coming years. Several use cases from the areas of manufacturing and process industry, require highly accurate sensor data. As sensors always have some degree of uncertainty, methods are needed to increase their reliability. The common approach is to regularly calibrate the devices to enable traceability according to national standards and Syst\`eme international (SI) units - which follows costly processes. However, sensor networks can also be represented as Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) and a single sensor can have a digital representation (Digital Twin) to use its data further on. To propagate uncertainty in a reliable way in the network, we present a system architecture to communicate measurement uncertainties in sensor networks utilizing the concept of Asset Administration Shells alongside methods from the domain of Organic Computing. The presented approach contains methods for uncertainty propagation as well as concepts from the Machine Learning domain that combine the need for an accurate uncertainty estimation. The mathematical description of the metrological uncertainty of fused or propagated values can be seen as a first step towards the development of a harmonized approach for uncertainty in distributed CPSs in the context of Industrie 4.0. In the context of the digital transformation of the industry, whole value chains get connected across various application domains; as long as economic, ecologic, or social benefits arise to do so. Under the umbrella of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), traditional Operational Technology (OT) approaches are replaced or at least augmented by Information and Communication Technology (ICT) systems to facilitate this development. To meet industrial requirements, for example, related to privacy, determinism, latency, or autonomy, established Cloud Computing mechanisms are being moved closer to data sources and actuators. Depending on the context, this distributed Cloud Computing paradigm is named Edge Computing or Fog Computing and various challenges have been subject to several publications. However, a proper reference model that describes the multi-dimensional problem space which is being spanned by this paradigm, seems still to be undefined. Such a model should provide orientation, put work in relation and support the identification of current and future research issues. This paper aims to fill this gap with a focus on industrial automation and follows analog models that have been developed for specific domains such as the Smart Grid Architecture Model (SGAM) and the Reference Architecture Model Industrie 4.0 (RAMI4.0). The proposed Reference Architecture Model Edge Computing (RAMEC) identifies 210 views on the Edge Computing paradigm in the manufacturing domain.
