53. Technical Management of Residential Buildings—The Idea of Implementing Predictive Approach Elements for Sustainable Maintenance.

Abstract

This article presents the issue of sustainably managing of the technical maintenance of multi-family residential buildings with diverse characteristics. The results of this research conducted on entities managing real estate in a real estate market in the city of Poznan (0.5 million inhabitants) are presented along with comments, with attention drawn to the commonness of the approaches used in building maintenance management. Of particular note is the reactive approach (which, in extreme cases, turns out to be unreliable and does not guarantee the absence of restrictions in the possibility of using housing resources) and the practical lack of application of the proactive-predictive approach. The main features of the approaches used in management are presented, and selected examples are used to demonstrate the advantage of proactive approaches in the economic, social, and environmental aspects. This article presents arguments for the implementation of proactive management strategies, including predictive maintenance. Due to financial and technical limitations, our model is presented in support of the technical management of buildings with predictive elements. The model is based on case-based reasoning (CBR). An important element of the model is the knowledge acquisition system, which uses mandatory technical condition inspections resulting from the applicable law and inspection protocols created as a result. The proposed model is not as expensive as using full predictive maintenance using sensor infrastructure devices, and at the same time allows advanced reasoning and solves the practical problems of maintaining housing resources. Abstract

Studies on the diversity and catabolic functionality of fungi in Arctic soils are still scarce. This knowledge gap needs to be urgently addressed, as global warming may have unpredictable effects on cold-adapted fungal species. We isolated two yeast species of the family Filobasidiaceae: Goffeauzyma gilvescens and Naganishia albidosimilis, from soil in central Spitsbergen (Svalbard) and characterised their metabolic properties at two temperatures, 4°C and 20°C, in a laboratory test using Biolog® FF plates. The results of the Biolog® test, which followed molecular identification of the strains, confirmed that the two species differed in their functional (catabolic) characteristics. The effect of temperature was also highly significant and the metabolic characteristics of two species varied between the two temperatures tested. As expected, among other chemical guilds of substrates on Biolog® plates, carbohydrates were the most used and also the most segregating of the strains studied, especially at 20°C. However, the relative use of almost all substrate groups changed between the two temperatures for both species tested, indicating that temperature can also affect soil microorganisms indirectly by altering their metabolic pathways. As soil microorganisms form a complex trophic and non-trophic network, such changes in metabolism under increasing temperature may also alter relationships between species and between species and the environment. Abstract

Abstract Microorganisms are famous for adapting quickly to new environments. However, most evidence for rapid microbial adaptation comes from laboratory experiments or domesticated environments, and it is unclear how rates of adaptation scale from human‐influenced environments to the great diversity of wild microorganisms. We examined potential monthly‐scale selective pressures in the model forest yeast Saccharomyces paradoxus. Contrary to expectations of seasonal adaptation, the S. paradoxus population was stable over four seasons in the face of abiotic and biotic environmental changes. While the S. paradoxus population was diverse, including 41 unique genotypes among 192 sampled isolates, there was no correlation between S. paradoxus genotypes and seasonal environments. Consistent with observations from other S. paradoxus populations, the forest population was highly clonal and inbred. This lack of recombination, paired with population stability, implies that selection is not acting on the forest S. paradoxus population on a seasonal timescale. Saccharomyces paradoxus may instead have evolved generalism or phenotypic plasticity with regard to seasonal environmental changes long ago. Similarly, while the forest population included diversity among phenotypes related to intraspecific interference competition, there was no evidence for active coevolution among these phenotypes. At least ten percent of the forest S. paradoxus individuals produced “killer toxins,” which kill sensitive Saccharomyces cells, but the presence of a toxin‐producing isolate did not predict resistance to the toxin among nearby isolates. How forest yeasts acclimate to changing environments remains an open question, and future studies should investigate the physiological responses that allow microbial cells to cope with environmental fluctuations in their native habitats.

Abstract

Based on mathematical modelling, this review article describes the mechanism of expansion in the circumference of vascular cambium due to radial growth leading to increase in the tree-taink diameter, and emphasizes upon the huge difference in the rate of symplastic growth of cambial initials in two different directions, viz. radial and circumferential. On the basis of anatomical evidence regarding the role of symplastic and intrusive growths, the long-standing hypothesis that the intrusive growth contributes to the increase of cambium circumference has been falsified. It has been shown with the help of mathematical calculations as well as anatomical observations that only symplastic growth of the initial cells (in circumferential direction) is responsible for the expansion of cambial circumference. 69. Exploring the discordance between self-reported and performance-based measures of physical capability

Abstract

Levels of physical capability, an individual's ability to undertake the physical tasks of daily living, are assessed using performance-based and self-reported measures. By examining discordance between these measures, two groups can be identified; one reports poor capability yet performs to higher levels than expected (underestimators), whilst the other report higher levels of capability than expected given their poor performance (overestimators). It was hypothesised that discordant groups would have different characteristics. Data from the MRC National Survey of Health and Development were used to explore the concordance and discordance between self-reported and performance-based measures of physical capability at age 60-64. To identify two discordant groups, and distinguish these from a reference concordant group, summary scores of the selfreported and performance-based measures were produced and plotted against each other. The selection of measures used to produce the self-reported summary score was informed by analyses that explored the hierarchical order in which participants reported difficulty with the physical tasks of daily living. Multinomial logistic regression models were used to investigate the associations between discordance and factors selected a priori based on comprehensive literature reviews Sex, education, occupational class, smoking history, pain and chronic depression, were associated with discordance at age 60-64. For example, those with higher socioeconomic position, who experienced pain or chronic depression were more likely to underestimate their physical capability, whilst women and ex-smokers were less likely to overestimate their physical capability. Evidence of discordance suggests that there may be individuals in early old age who have unmet needs relating to their physical capability when assessment is based on either self-reported or performance based measures alone. Future policy should ensure these individuals are identified; factors associated with discordance can be used to identify target groups who may benefit from intervention that prevent or minimise age-related declines in physical capability.

Abstract

ABSTRACT To persist in variable environments, populations of microorganisms have to survive periods of starvation and be able to restart cell division in nutrient-rich conditions. Typically, starvation signals initiate a transition to a quiescent state in a fraction of individual cells, while the rest of the cells remain nonquiescent. It is widely believed that, while quiescent (Q) cells help the population to survive long starvation, the nonquiescent (NQ) cells are a side effect of imperfect transition. We analyzed the regrowth of starved monocultures of Q and NQ cells compared to that of mixed, heterogeneous cultures from simple and complex starvation environments. Our experiments, as well as mathematical modeling, demonstrate that Q monocultures benefit from better survival during long starvation and from a shorter lag phase after resupply of rich medium. However, when the starvation period is very short, the NQ monocultures outperform Q and mixed cultures due to their short lag phase. In addition, only NQ monocultures benefit from complex starvation environments, where nutrient recycling is possible. Our study suggests that phenotypic heterogeneity in starved populations could be a form of bet hedging that is adaptive when environmental determinants, such as the length of the starvation period, the length of the regrowth phase, and the complexity of the starvation environment, vary over time. IMPORTANCE Nongenetic cell heterogeneity is present in glucose-starved yeast populations in the form of quiescent (Q) and nonquiescent (NQ) phenotypes. There is evidence that Q cells help the population survive long starvation. However, the role of the NQ cell type is not known, and it has been speculated that the NQ phenotype is just a side effect of the imperfect transition to the Q phenotype. Here, we show that, in contrast, there are ecological scenarios in which NQ cells perform better than monocultures of Q cells or naturally occurring mixed populations containing both Q and NQ cells. NQ cells benefit when the starvation period is very short and environmental conditions allow nutrient recycling during starvation. Our experimental and mathematical modeling results suggest a novel hypothesis: the presence of both Q and NQ phenotypes within starved yeast populations may reflect a form of bet hedging where different phenotypes provide fitness advantages depending on the environmental conditions.

Abstract

Cellulose nanopaper is a material structure that possesses high mechanical performance and is widely regarded as a promising 2D reinforcement for polymer matrix composites. This work explores the use of low grammage bacterial cellulose (BC) nanopaper as reinforcement for poly(acrylated urethane) interlayer adhesive to increase the impact performance of multilayer acrylic composites. The BC nanopaper is impregnated with an acrylated urethane resin and laminated between acrylic sheets to create BC/acrylic composites consisting of one, three, and five layers of BC nanopaper‐reinforced poly(acrylated urethane) interlayer adhesive(s). Both the poly(acrylated urethane)‐filled BC nanopaper interlayer adhesive and the resulting laminated acrylic composites are optically transparent. The incorporation of BC nanopaper into the poly(acrylated urethane) interlayer adhesive improves the tensile modulus by eightfold and the single‐edge notched fracture toughness by 60% compared to neat poly(acrylated urethane). It is also found that using poly(acrylated urethane)‐filled BC nanopaper interlayer adhesive proves beneficial to the impact properties of the resulting laminated acrylic composites. In Charpy impact testing, the impact strength of the multilayer acrylic composites increases by up to 130% compared to the "gold‐standard" impact‐modified monolithic acrylic, with a BC loading of only 1.6 wt%. Abstract

We derive coupled-cluster equations for three-body Hamiltonians. The equations for the one- and two-body cluster amplitudes are presented in a factorized form that leads to an efficient numerical implementation. We employ low-momentum two- and three-nucleon interactions and calculate the binding energy of He-4. The results show that the main contribution of the three-nucleon interaction stems from its density-dependent zero-, one-, and two-body terms that result from the normal ordering of the Hamiltonian in coupled-cluster theory. Abstract

We study the ground and low-lying excited states of O-15, O-17, N-15, and F-17 using modern two-body nucleon-nucleon interactions and the suitably designed variants of the ab initio equation-of-motion coupled-cluster theory aimed at an accurate description of systems with valence particles and holes. A number of properties of O-15, O-17, N-15, and F-17, including ways the energies of ground and excited states of valence systems around O-16 change as functions of the number of nucleons, are correctly reproduced by the equation-of-motion coupled-cluster calculations. Within a harmonic oscillator basis and large effective model spaces, our results are converged for the chosen two-body Hamiltonians. Thus, all disagreements with experiment are, most likely, due to the degrees of freedom such as three-body interactions not accounted for in our effective two-body Hamiltonians. In particular, the calculated binding energies of O-15/N-15 and O-17/F-17 enable us to rationalize the discrepancy between the experimental and recently published [Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 212501 (2005)] equation-of-motion coupled-cluster excitation energies for the Jpi=3- state of O-16. The results demonstrate the feasibility of the equation-of-motion coupled-cluster methods to deal with valence systems around closed-shell nuclei and to provide precise results for systems beyond A=16.

Abstract

We report converged results for the ground and excited states and matter density of 16-O using realistic two-body nucleon-nucleon interactions and coupled-cluster methods and formalism developed in quantum chemistry. Most of the binding is obtained with the coupled-cluster singles and doubles approach. Additional binding due to three-body clusters (triples) is minimal. The coupled-cluster method with singles and doubles provides a good description of the matter density, charge radius, charge form factor, and excited states of a 1-particle-1-hole nature, but it cannot describe the first excited 0+ state. Abstract

We present several coupled-cluster calculations of ground and excited states of 4He and 16O employing methods from quantum chemistry. A comparison of coupled cluster results with the results of exact diagonalization of the hamiltonian in the same model space and other truncated shell-model calculations shows that the quantum chemistry inspired coupled cluster approximations provide an excellent description of ground and excited states of nuclei, with much less computational effort than traditional large-scale shell-model approaches. Unless truncations are made, for nuclei like 16O, full-fledged shell-model calculations with four or more major shells are not possible. However, these and even larger systems can be studied with the coupled cluster methods due to the polynomial rather than factorial scaling inherent in standard shell-model studies. Abstract

Objective To estimate the economic burden to the health service of surgical site infection following caesarean section and to identify potential savings achievable through implementation of a surveillance programme.Design Economic model to evaluate the costs and benefits of surveillance from community and hospital healthcare providers’ perspective.Setting England.Participants Women undergoing caesarean section in National Health Service hospitals.Main outcome measure Costs attributable to treatment and management of surgical site infection following caesarean section.Results The costs (2010) for a hospital carrying out 800 caesarean sections a year based on infection risk of 9.6% were estimated at £18 914 (95% CI 11 521 to 29 499) with 28% accounted for by community care (£5370). With inflation to 2019 prices, this equates to an estimated cost of £5.0 m for all caesarean sections performed annually in England 2018–2019, approximately £1866 and £93 per infection managed in hospital and community, respectively. The cost of surveillance for a hospital for one calendar quarter was estimated as £3747 (2010 costs). Modelling a decrease in risk of infection of 30%, 20% or 10% between successive surveillance periods indicated that a variable intermittent surveillance strategy achieved higher or similar net savings than continuous surveillance. Breakeven was reached sooner with the variable surveillance strategy than continuous surveillance when the baseline risk of infection was 10% or 15% and smaller loses with a baseline risk of 5%.Conclusion Surveillance of surgical site infections after caesarean section with feedback of data to surgical teams offers a potentially effective means to reduce infection risk, improve patient experience and save money for the health service.
