51. The rise of computational techniques in atom probe microscopy

Abstract: Much effort has been devoted to the development of computational techniques in atom probe microscopy over the past decade. There have been several drivers for this effort. Firstly, there has been effort devoted to addressing the challenges of discerning information from the increasingly large size of the data, and capturing the opportunities that this large data presents. Secondly, there has been significant new effort devoted to the simulation of atom probe data so that pristine datasets that contain microstructural features of increasing complexity can be generated in-silico , and subjected to complex data-mining algorithms. This has enabled the benchmarking of various algorithms, guided the setting of parameters for particular analyses, and exposed the effects of instrumentation parameters such as detector efficiency and aberrations in ionic flight path. The authors are especially interested in the prospects of converging atomic-scale microscopy with atomic-scale materials modelling via first principles approaches. This involves excising parts of the APM data and using these as super-cell inputs to calculations of materials properties via density functional theory. It is our opinion that this represents a major advance for materials science because it enables microscopy to advance microstructure–property relationships to the direct mapping of such relationships based on many-body interactions. As such, this approach has great potential for materials design and development. The final part of this paper focuses on how cloud-based computing represents an exciting frontier of the computational aspects of atom probe microscopy. We discuss the opportunities and the barriers for conducting new materials science through the analysis and visualisation of atom probe data via new generation tools that are cloud-based, and which are managed, curated and governed with significant user-community input and integrated with contemporary electronic laboratory notebook technology.

Abstract: Controllable doping of semiconductor nanowires is critical to realize their proposed applications, however precise and reliable characterization of dopant distributions remains challenging. In this article, we demonstrate an atomic-resolution three-dimensional elemental mapping of pristine semiconductor nanowires on growth substrates by using atom probe tomography to tackle this major challenge. This highly transferrable method is able to analyze the full diameter of a nanowire, with a depth resolution better than 0.17 nm thanks to an advanced reconstruction method exploiting the specimen's crystallography, and an enhanced chemical sensitivity of better than 8-fold increase in the signal-to-noise ratio.

Abstract: The structural, optical and magnetic properties of Ag 13 , Ag 12 Cu 1 and Cu 13 clusters have been investigated using density functional theory calculations. The global minimum of the Ag 12 Cu 1 cluster is predicted to be cuboctahedral (COh) core–shell structure with O h point group symmetry while the icosahedral (Ih) core–shell isomer has a higher HOMO–LUMO gap and higher magnetic moment. The optical absorption spectrum of the Ih Ag 12 Cu 1 has three absorption peaks at 2.17, 2.41 and 2.65 eV, compared with that the COh Ag 12 Cu 1 has one main absorption peak at 2.51 eV. The characteristics in electronic density of states (DOSs) show that Ih core–shell Ag 12 Cu 1 has ferromagnetic properties like pure Au 13 , Ag 13 nanoclusters. The sizable split between spin up and spin down DOS of d states in the inner Cu atom and sp states in the outer Ag atoms bring in large magnetic moment to Ih Ag 12 Cu 1 cluster.

Abstract: Graphene based quantum dots and antidots are two nanostructures of primary importance for their fundamental physics and technological applications, particularly in the emerging field of graphene-based nanoelectronics and nanospintronics. Herein, based on first principles density functional theory calculations, we report a comparative study on the electronic structure of these two structurally complementary entities, where the bandgap opening, edge magnetism and the role of hydrogenation are investigated. Our results show the diversity of electronic structures of various dots and antidots, whose properties are sensitive to the edge detailed geometry (including size and shape and edge type). Hydrogen passivation plays an essential roal in affecting the related properties, in particular, it leads to larger bandgap values and suppress the edge magnetism. The frontier orbital analysis is employed to rationalize and compare the complicated nature of dots and antidots. Based on the specific geometrical consideration and the total energy competition of the ground antiferromagnetic and the ferromagnetic states, some magnetic structures (the unpassivated 42-atom-antidot and 54-atom-dot) are proposed to be useful as magnetic switches.

Abstract: Here we present a study of magnetism in Co_{0.05}Ti_{0.95}O_{2-δ} anatase films grown by pulsed laser deposition under a variety of oxygen partial pressures and deposition rates. Energy-dispersive spectrometry and transmission electron microscopy analyses indicate that a high deposition rate leads to a homogeneous microstructure, while a very low rate or postannealing results in cobalt clustering. Depth resolved low-energy muon spin rotation experiments show that films grown at a low oxygen partial pressure (≈10^{-6} torr) with a uniform structure are fully magnetic, indicating intrinsic ferromagnetism. First principles calculations identify the beneficial role of low oxygen partial pressure in the realization of uniform carrier-mediated ferromagnetism. This work demonstrates that Co:TiO_{2} is an intrinsic diluted magnetic semiconductor.

Abstract: The manipulation of atomic-scale magnetization is important from both a fundamental and a practical perspective. Using first-principles density-functional-theory calculations within the hybrid functional approach, we systematically study spin-lattice coupling effects for isolated $3{d}^{4}--3{d}^{7}$ transition-metal dopants in a nonmagnetic, ferroelectric ${\mathrm{PbTiO}}_{3}$ host material. When present at the B-site, a low-spin (or intermediate-spin) to high-spin crossover induces marked ferroelectric-like distortions in the local geometry, characterized by a shift of the dopant ion with respect to the surrounding ${\mathrm{O}}_{6}$ octahedral cage. The origins of this microscopic multiferroic effect are discussed in terms of the pseudo-Jahn-Teller theory for ferroelectricity. The possibility to exploit this phenomenon to achieve strong magnetoelectric coupling, including controlled spin switching, is also investigated. These results provide a further understanding of ferroelectricity and multiferroicity in perovskite oxides, and they suggest a possible pathway to manipulate single atomic spins in semiconductor solid solutions.

Abstract: Based on density-functional theory and non-equilibrium Green's function calculations, we demonstrate that endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) are reactive to open-shell gases, and therefore have the potential application as selective open-shell gas sensors. The adsorption of eight gas species (CO, H2O, H2S, NO2, NO, SO2, O2 and NH3) on three EMFs (M@C60, M = Ca, Na and Sr) shows that the adsorption energies of the EMFs towards NO2 and NO are significantly higher than the closed-shell species. Moreover, the high selectivity appears relatively insensitive to the inserted metal atoms. The calculated current–voltage characteristics of gold-M@C60-gold structures (M = Ca, Na) show that the adsorption of NO2 leads to significant change in conductivity, suggesting a potential application as an EMF gas resistive sensing device.

Abstract: Interstitially doped Cu 3 N represents a model system to study “enclosed atoms” in a cuboctahedral environment. Based on density functional theory calculations using the generalized gradient approximation, we report a systematic study of 3d-transition metals (TM), as well as Li-, H-, and Pd-doped Cu 3 N , whose stabilities and magnetic properties are investigated. The interposition of 3d-TM atoms leads to mechanically stable yet brittle structures, with Sc, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn possessing relatively small positive (endothermic) formation energies ( 0.12 ∼ 0.54 eV / TM ) , suggesting it may be easier to realize them experimentally than other 3d-TM elements. Li-, H-, Pd-doping in Cu 3 N are exothermic, while Ti, V, Cr, Fe, and Co have higher formation energy (0.93∼1.39 eV/TM) at a doping concentration 3.7 %. The fully 3d-TM doped Cu 3 N systems exhibit a wide spectrum of magnetic properties, ranging from weak antiferromagnetic (Sc-), antiferromagnetic (Ti-, V-, Cr-) to ferromagnetic (Mn-, Fe-, Co-) and non-magnetic (Ni-, Cu-, Zn-) behaviour. In particular, Ti : Cu 3 N exhibits weak itinerant magnetic properties with a large positive magnetovolume effect. All the 3d-TM atom intercalations into cubic Cu 3 N lead to a semiconductor-to-metal transition for both 100% and 3.7% doping, with the exception of Ni : Cu 3 N exhibiting a weak metallic or narrow semiconducting behaviour depending on the doping concentration.

Abstract: We report the fabrication of single crystal kinked ZnO [001] and [100] nanowires (NWs). From the detailed morphology and microstructure analyzed by transmission electron microscopy, we discuss the growth characteristics, including nucleation and kinking, from a growth process point of view. We have discovered that the crystallographic property of the substrate surface played a critical role in determining the growth directions, which in turn determine the characteristics of single crystal kinking. A mechanism based on the unbalanced facet growth was proposed to explain the kinking of the single crystal kinked nanowires. Photoluminescence spectra confirm that the optical property of the ZnO NWs was not altered by the single crystal kinking.

Abstract: Electric fields are regarded as a promising means of graphene oxide reduction, but previous studies have only focused on pristine graphene. Here, based on first principles density functional theory calculations, we report on electric field mediated reduction of neutral and charged O and hydroxyl groups from both pristine and defective graphene sheets. The critical electric field strengths for different species are determined in facilitating a progressive and selective graphene oxide reduction. Our results demonstrate that the presence of vacancy defects significantly inhibits the effectiveness of electric fields as a means of reduction of O and OH functionals, due to the complexities that arise between the functional group and vacancy edge atoms in the presence of an applied electric field.

Abstract: Understanding the band structure evolution of (AlxGa1−x)2O3 alloys is of fundamental importance for developing Ga2O3-based power electronic devices and vacuum ultraviolet super-radiation hard detectors. Here, we report on the bandgap engineering of β-(AlxGa1−x)2O3 thin films and the identification of compositionally dependent electronic band structures by a combination of absorption spectra analyses and density functional theory calculations. Single-monoclinic β-phase (AlxGa1−x)2O3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.54) films with a preferred (−201) orientation were grown by laser molecular beam epitaxy with tunable bandgap ranging from 4.5 to 5.5 eV. The excellent fitting of absorption spectra by the relation of (αhν)1/2 ∝ (hν-E) unambiguously identifies that β-(AlxGa1−x)2O3 alloys are indirect bandgap semiconductors. Theoretical calculations predict that the indirect nature of β-(AlxGa1−x)2O3 becomes more pronounced with increased Al composition due to the increased eigenvalue energy gap between M and Г points in the valence band. The experimentally determined indirect bandgap exhibits almost a linear relationship with Al composition, which is consistent with the theoretical calculation and indicates a small bowing effect and a good miscibility. The identification and modulation of (AlxGa1−x)2O3 band structures allows rational design of ultra-wide bandgap oxide heterostructures for the applications in power electronics and solar-blind or X-ray detection.

Abstract: The microscopic mechanism of the tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) in Cr-doped GaN/AlN/GaN (0 0 0 1) trilayer junctions is studied based on density functional theory calculations. For enhanced performance, we propose δ -Cr-layer doping in GaN, close to the GaN/AlN interfaces. Depending on the doping concentration, Cr dopants produce local metallic (1 ML) or half-metallic ( 1 2 and 1 4 ML) states surrounded by the host semiconductor materials. Very thin AlN barriers are predicted to yield a low TMR effect. These results help explain existing experimental results and are expected to be valuable with regard to the practical fabrication of improved pure semiconductor spintronic devices.

Abstract: The evolution of resistivity versus temperature (�(T)) curve for different doping elements, and in the presence of various defects and clustering are explained for both diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS) and manganites. Here, we provide unambiguous evidence that the concept of ionization energy (EI), which is explicitly associated with the atomic energy levels, can be related quantitatively to transport measurements. The proposed ionization energy model is used to understand how the valence states of ions affect the evolution of �(T) curves for different doping elements. We also explain how the �(T) curves evolve in the presence of, and in the absence of defects and clustering. The model also complements the results obtained from first-principles calculations.

65. Enhanced oscillatory rectification and negative differential resistance in pentamantane diamondoid-cumulene systems

Abstract: We propose a new functionality for diamondoids in nanoelectronics. Based on the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism and density functional theory, we reveal that when attached to gold electrodes, the pentamantane-cumulene molecular junction exhibits large and oscillatory rectification and negative differential resistance (NDR) - depending on the number of carbon atoms in cumulene (Cn). When n is odd rectification is greatly enhanced where the rectification ratio can reach ∼180 and a large negative differential resistance peak current of ∼3 μA. This oscillatory behavior is well rationalised in terms of the occupancy of the carbon 2p states in Cn. Interestingly, different layers of C atoms in the pentamantane molecule have different contributions to transmission. The first and third layers of C atoms in pentamantane have a slight contribution to rectification, and the fifth and sixth layers have a stronger contribution to both rectification and NDR. Thus, our results suggest potential avenues for controlling their functions by chemically manipulating various parts of the diamondoid molecule, thus extending the applications of diamondoids in nanoscale integrated circuits.

Abstract: Based on the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism and density-functional theory, we investigate the onset of electrical rectification in a single C59N molecule in conjunction with gold electrodes. Our calculations reveal that rectification is dependent upon the anchoring of the Au atom on C59N; when the Au electrode is singly bonded to a C atom (labeled here as A), the system does not exhibit rectification, whereas when the electrode is connected to the C-C bridge site between two hexagonal rings (labeled here as B), transmission asymmetry is observed, where the rectification ratio reaches up to 2.62 at ±1 V depending on the N doping site relative to the anchoring site. Our analysis of the transmission mechanism shows that N doping of the B configuration causes rectification because more transmission channels are available for transmission in the B configuration than in the A configuration.

Abstract: Through first-principles electron transport simulations using the nonequilibrium Green’s function formalism together with density functional theory, we show that, upon H-tautomerization, a simple derivative of quinone can act as a molecular switch with high ON/OFF ratio, up to 70 at low bias voltage. This switching behavior is explained by the quantum interference effect, where the positional change of hydrogen atoms causes the energies of the transmission channels to overlap. Our results suggest that this molecule could have potential applications as an effective switching device.

Abstract: We report a new measurement of the midrapidity inclusive jet longitudinal double-spin asymmetry, A_{LL}, in polarized pp collisions at center-of-mass energy sqrt[s]=200 GeV. The STAR data place stringent constraints on polarized parton distribution functions extracted at next-to-leading order from global analyses of inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (DIS), semi-inclusive DIS, and RHIC pp data. The measured asymmetries provide evidence at the 3σ level for positive gluon polarization in the Bjorken-x region x>0.05.

Abstract: Using hybrid density functional calculations, we study the electronic and structural properties of ${\mathrm{SrZrO}}_{3}$ and ordered $\mathrm{Sr}(\mathrm{Ti},\mathrm{Zr}){\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ alloys. Calculations were performed for the ground-state orthorhombic $(Pnma)$ and high-temperature cubic $(Pm3m)$ phases of ${\mathrm{SrZrO}}_{3}$. The variation of the lattice parameters and band gaps with Ti addition was studied using ordered ${\mathrm{SrTi}}_{x}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{Zr}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ structures with $x=0$, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1. As Ti is added to ${\mathrm{SrZrO}}_{3}$, the lattice parameter is reduced and closely follows Vegard's law. On the other hand, the band gap shows a large bowing and is highly sensitive to the Ti distribution. For $x=0.5$, we find that arranging the Ti and Zr atoms into a $1\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}1\phantom{\rule{4.pt}{0ex}}{\mathrm{SrZrO}}_{3}/{\mathrm{SrTiO}}_{3}$ superlattice along the [001] direction leads to interesting properties, including a highly dispersive single band at the conduction-band minimum (CBM), which is absent in both parent compounds, and a band gap close to that of pure ${\mathrm{SrTiO}}_{3}$. These features are explained by the splitting of the lowest three conduction-band states due to the reduced symmetry of the superlattice, lowering the band originating from the in-plane Ti $3{d}_{xy}$ orbitals. The lifting of the ${t}_{2g}$ orbital degeneracy around the CBM suppresses scattering due to electron-phonon interactions. Our results demonstrate how short-period ${\mathrm{SrZrO}}_{3}/{\mathrm{SrTiO}}_{3}$ superlattices could be exploited to engineer the band structure and improve carrier mobility compared to bulk ${\mathrm{SrTiO}}_{3}$.

Abstract: The coexistence of ferroelectricity and magnetism in $AB{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ perovskite oxides is rare, a phenomenon that has become known as the ferroelectric ``${d}^{0}$ rule.'' Recently, the perovskite ${\mathrm{BiCoO}}_{3}$ has been shown experimentally to be isostructural with ${\mathrm{PbTiO}}_{3}$, while simultaneously the ${d}^{6}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}{\mathrm{Co}}^{3+}$ ion has a high-spin ground state with $C$-type antiferromagnetic ordering. It has been suggested that the hybridization of Bi $6s$ states with the O $2p$ valence band stabilizes the polar phase, however, we have recently demonstrated that ${\mathrm{Co}}^{3+}$ ions in the perovskite structure can facilitate a ferroelectric distortion via the Co $3d$--O $2p$ covalent interaction [L. Weston, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 247601 (2015)]. In this paper, using accurate hybrid density functional calculations, we investigate the atomic, electronic, and magnetic structure of ${\mathrm{BiCoO}}_{3}$ to elucidate the origin of the multiferroic state. To begin with, we perform a more general first-principles investigation of the role of $d$ electrons in affecting the tendency for perovskite materials to exhibit a ferroelectric distortion; this is achieved via a qualitative trend study in artificial cubic and tetragonal $\mathrm{La}B{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ perovskites. We choose La as the $A$ cation so as to remove the effects of Bi $6s$ hybridization. The lattice instability is identified by the softening of phonon modes in the cubic phase, as well as by the energy lowering associated with a ferroelectric distortion. For the $\mathrm{La}B{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ series, where $B$ is a ${d}^{0}--{d}^{8}$ cation from the $3d$ block, the trend study reveals that increasing the $d$ orbital occupation initially removes the tendency for a polar distortion, as expected. However, for high-spin ${d}^{5}--{d}^{7}$ and ${d}^{8}$ cations a strong ferroelectric instability is recovered. This effect is explained in terms of increased pseudo-Jahn-Teller (PJT) $p\ensuremath{-}d$ vibronic coupling. The PJT effect is described by the competition between a stabilizing force (${K}_{0}$) that favors the cubic phase, and a vibronic term that drives the ferroelectric state (${K}_{v}$). The recovery of the lattice instability for high-spin ${d}^{5}--{d}^{7}$ and ${d}^{8}$ cations is due to (i) a reduction in ${K}_{0}$ due to a significant volume increase arising from population of the $\ensuremath{\sigma}$-bonded axial $d\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}{e}_{g}$ orbitals, and (ii) an increase in the ${K}_{v}$ contribution arising from increased $p\ensuremath{-}d$ hybridization; our calculations suggest that the former mechanism is dominant. Surprisingly, we are able to show that, in some cases unpaired electron spins actually drive ferroelectricity, rather than inhibit it, which represents a shift in the understanding of how ferroelectricity and magnetism interact in perovskite oxides. It follows, that for the case of ${\mathrm{BiCoO}}_{3}$, the ${\mathrm{Co}}^{3+}$ ion plays a major role in the ferroelectric lattice instability. Importantly, the ferroelectric polarization is greatly enhanced when the ${\mathrm{Co}}^{3+}$ ion is in the high-spin state, when compared to the nonmagnetic, low-spin state, and a large coupling of the electric and magnetic polarization is present. Generally, for ${d}^{5}--{d}^{7} B$ cations in $AB{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ perovskites, an inherent and remarkably strong magnetoelectric coupling exists via the multiferroic crossover effect, whereby switching the spin state strongly affects the ferroelectric polarization and, potentially, manipulation of the polarization with an externally applied electric field could induce a spin-state transition. This novel effect is demonstrated for ${\mathrm{BiCoO}}_{3}$, for which the ground spin state is switched by reducing the internal ferroelectric polarization. These results provide a deeper insight into perovskite ferroelectrics and multiferroics.

Abstract: We present an ab initio density functional study of magnetic phase transitions in the YCo3H2 system. The augmented plane wave and local orbital method as employed in the WIEN2K code is used to predict the structure and electronic structure of this compound. Comparison is made with recent X-ray diffraction and magnetization studies. The calculations suggest that the YCo3H2 system is ferrimagnetic in character. Further, fixed spin moment calculations are used to predict and interpret magnetic phase transitions observed in externally applied magnetic fields.

Abstract: We present the results of first-principles computational studies of the dynamical properties of hexagonal ice using both the ab-initio pseudopotential method and the full-potential augmented plane-wave method. Properties obtained using both the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and the meta-GGA in density-functional theory are compared. The lattice-dynamical properties of the structures are obtained using a finite-difference evaluation of the dynamical matrix and force-constant matrix from atomic forces. Phonon dispersion is evaluated by the direct determination of the force-constant matrix in supercells derived from the primitive molecule unit cells with the assumption that force constants are zero beyond the second molecular nearest neighbors. The k-dependent phonon frequencies are then obtained from the force-constant matrix and dispersion relations, and the Brillouin-zone integrated density of states is evaluated. The importance of phonon dispersion in the various regions of the phonon spectra is then assessed and compared to existing neutron-scattering data. Abstract: Event-by-event fluctuations of the multiplicities of inclusive charged particles and photons at forward rapidity in Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV have been studied. The dominant contribution to such fluctuations is expected to come from correlated production of charged and neutral pions. We search for evidence of dynamical fluctuations of different physical origins. Observables constructed out of moments of multiplicities are used as measures of fluctuations. Mixed events and model calculations are used as base lines. Results are compared to the dynamical net-charge fluctuations measured in the same acceptance. A nonzero statistically significant signal of dynamical fluctuations is observed in excess to the model prediction when charged particles and photons are measured in the same acceptance. We find that, unlike dynamical net-charge fluctuation, charge-neutral fluctuation is not dominated by correlation owing to particle decay. Abstract: Modulation of material physical and chemical properties through selective surface engineering is currently one of the most active research fields, aimed at optimizing functional performance for applications. The activity of exposed crystal planes determines the catalytic, sensory, photocatalytic and electrochemical behavior of a material. In the research on nanomagnets, it opens up new perspectives in the fields of nanoelectronics, spintronics and quantum computation. Herein, we demonstrate controllable magnetic modulation of α-MnO2 nanowires, which displayed surface ferromagnetism or antiferromagnetism, depending on the exposed plane. First-principles density functional theory calculations confirm that both Mn- and O-terminated α-MnO2 (1 1 0) surfaces exhibit ferromagnetic ordering. The investigation of surface-controlled magnetic particles will lead to significant progress in our fundamental understanding of functional aspects of magnetism on the nanoscale, facilitating rational design of nanomagnets. Moreover, we approved that the facet engineering pave the way on designing semiconductors possessing unique properties for novel energy applications, owing to that the bandgap and the electronic transport of the semiconductor can be tailored via exposed surface modulations.

Abstract: This article adopts the method of panel data index factor analysis, to evaluate and analyze the input and output capacity of science and technology among88 national high-tech zones in China in the past six years. First of all, the author designs eight evaluation indexes on science and technology innovation ability, then, carries on six factor analysis to 88 statelevel high-tech zones between 2008 to 2013 with SPSS18.0 software, and extracts the two common factors: Input factor and output factor. Then, the author calculates their factor scores and integrated total scores with Microsoft Excel. Finally, the author calculates the integrated total score of panel data, finds out the factors which affect the development of science and technology innovation ability on high-tech zones according to the score, and provides a reference to the scientific and technological development of high-tech zones. Abstract: Based on first-principles density functional calculations we propose a novel Al vacancy induced ferromagnetism occurring at the LaAlO(3) surface of SrTiO(3)/LaAlO(3) bilayers. Magnetism at cation vacancies away from the surface is quenched due to charge compensation. Magnetic surface Al vacancies are stabilized due to the built-in electric field inside the LaAlO(3) region that raises the energy of the defect level, making charge compensation unfavorable. Surface Al vacancies prefer to form clusters and exhibit two-dimensional ferromagnetic alignment mediated by a long-range magnetic interaction. These results are discussed in light of recent experimental observations.

Abstract: We report the first measurement of charmed-hadron (D-0) production via the hadronic decay channel (D-0 -> K- + pi(+)) in Au + Au collisions at root(NN)-N-s = 200 GeV with the STAR experiment. The charm production cross section per nucleon- nucleon collision at midrapidity scales with the number of binary collisions, N-bin, from p + p to central Au + Au collisions. The D-0 meson yields in central Au + Au collisions are strongly suppressed compared to those in p + p scaled by N-bin, for transverse momenta p(T) > 3 GeV/c, demonstrating significant energy loss of charm quarks in the hot and dense medium. An enhancement at intermediate p(T) is also observed. Model calculations including strong charm-medium interactions and coalescence hadronization describe our measurements.

Abstract: A complete phase diagram and its corresponding physical properties are essential prerequisites to understand the underlying mechanism of iron-based superconductivity. For the structurally simplest 11 (FeSeTe) system, earlier attempts using bulk samples have not been able to do so due to the fabrication difficulties. Here, thin FeSe(x)Te(1-x) films with the Se content covering the full range (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) were fabricated by using pulsed laser deposition method. Crystal structure analysis shows that all films retain the tetragonal structure in room temperature. Significantly, the highest superconducting transition temperature (T(C) = 20 K) occurs in the newly discovered domain, i.e., 0.6 ≤ x ≤ 0.8. The single-phased superconducting dome for the full Se doping range is the first of its kind in iron chalcogenide superconductors. Our results present a new avenue to explore novel physics as well as to optimize superconductors.

Abstract: We report the first measurements of the moments-mean (M), variance (sigma(2)), skewness (S), and kurtosis (kappa)-of the net-charge multiplicity distributions at midrapidity in Au + Au collisions at seven energies, ranging from root s(NN) = 7.7 to 200 GeV, as a part of the Beam Energy Scan program at RHIC. The moments are related to the thermodynamic susceptibilities of net charge, and are sensitive to the location of the QCD critical point. We compare the products of the moments, sigma(2)/M, S sigma, and kappa sigma(2), with the expectations from Poisson and negative binomial distributions (NBDs). The S sigma values deviate from the Poisson baseline and are close to the NBD baseline, while the kappa sigma(2) values tend to lie between the two. Within the present uncertainties, our data do not show nonmonotonic behavior as a function of collision energy. These measurements provide a valuable tool to extract the freeze-out parameters in heavy-ion collisions by comparing with theoretical models.

Abstract: Microscopy encompasses a wide variety of forms and scales. So too does the array of simulation techniques developed that correlate to and build upon microstructural information. Nevertheless, a true nexus between microscopy and atomistic simulations is lacking. Atom probe has emerged as a potential means of achieving this goal. Atom probe generates three-dimensional atomistic images in a format almost identical to many atomistic simulations. However, this data is imperfect, preventing input into computational algorithms to predict material properties. Here we describe a methodology to overcome these limitations, based on a hybrid data format, blending atom probe and predictive Monte Carlo simulations. We create atomically complete and lattice-bound models of material specimens. This hybrid data can then be used as direct input into density functional theory simulations to calculate local energetics and elastic properties. This research demonstrates the role that atom probe combined with theoretical approaches can play in modern materials engineering.

Abstract: A first-principles investigation into the magnetic ferroelectric PbTi(1-x)Co(x)O(3) has revealed a bi-stable magnetic system with strong spin-lattice coupling. The local distortions induced by the low-spin to high-spin crossover are ferroelectric in nature, and are characterized by the displacement of the dopant ion with respect to the surrounding O(6) octahedral cage. We demonstrate how this spin-lattice effect could mediate magnetoelectric coupling and possible electric field induced spin-crossover, indicating a promising route to voltage manipulation of isolated spins in a solid-state system.

Abstract: Using hybrid density functional theory, we investigate the impact of native vacancies and hydrogen impurities on the electrical and optical properties of cubic ${\mathrm{SrZrO}}_{3}$. Oxygen vacancies (${V}_{\mathrm{O}}$) form localized states and introduce deep donor levels in the gap. The formation energy of ${V}_{\mathrm{O}}$ is low when the Fermi level is near the valence band; ${V}_{\mathrm{O}}$ will thus be a compensating center in acceptor-doped ${\mathrm{SrZrO}}_{3}$. Sr and Zr vacancies (${V}_{\mathrm{Sr}}$/${V}_{\mathrm{Zr}}$) are acceptor-type defects, and have low formations energies when the Fermi level is near the conduction band. Hole localization on oxygen dangling bonds is an important feature of these vacancies. ${V}_{\mathrm{Sr}}$ is most prevalent and can account for the luminescence peak at 3.4 eV observed in Sr-deficient ${\mathrm{SrZrO}}_{3}$. Hydrogen impurities are found to preferentially incorporate at an interstitial site (${\mathrm{H}}_{i}$), forming an O-H bond and acting as a donor. ${\mathrm{H}}_{i}$ can also be stabilized as an acceptor, sitting midway between adjacent Sr atoms; the $\ensuremath{\varepsilon}(+/\ensuremath{-})$ transition level is found at 0.44 eV below the conduction band. Hydrogen can also substitute on an oxygen site (${\mathrm{H}}_{\mathrm{O}}$), acting as a shallow donor. The formation energy of ${\mathrm{H}}_{\mathrm{O}}$ is high compared to ${\mathrm{H}}_{i}$, yet it is stable with respect to dissociation into ${\mathrm{H}}_{i}$ and ${V}_{\mathrm{O}}$.

Abstract: A study is reported of the same-and opposite-sign charge-dependent azimuthal correlations with respect to the event plane in Au+ Au collisions at root(S)(NN) = 200 GeV. The charge multiplicity asymmetries between the up/down and left/right hemispheres relative to the event plane are utilized. The contributions from statistical fluctuations and detector effects were subtracted from the (co-) variance of the observed charge multiplicity asymmetries. In the mid-to most-central collisions, the same- (opposite-) sign pairs are preferentially emitted in back-to-back (aligned on the same-side) directions. The charge separation across the event plane, measured by the difference, Delta, between the like-and unlike-sign up/down-left/right correlations, is largest near the event plane. The difference is found to be proportional to the event-by-event final-state particle ellipticity (via the observed second order harmonic nu(obs)(2)), where Delta = [ 1.3 +/- 1.4( stat)(-1.0)(+4.0)(syst)] x 10(-5) + [3.2 +/- 0.2(stat)(- 0.3)(+0.4)(syst)] x 10(-3)v(2)(obs) for 20- 40% Au + Au collisions. The implications for the proposed chiral magnetic effect are discussed.

Abstract: First-principles calculations based on the total-energy, all-electron, full-potential linear muffin-tin orbitals method within the local-density approximation have been employed to study the ground-state properties of the ternary intermetallic Ti2AlNb (O phase). The equilibrium volume, cohesive energy, formation energy, and bulk modulus are obtained. The results calculated compare well with the available experimental results. The densities of states and charge-density plots show that the bonding in Ti2AlNb is metallic in nature and has a more covalent bond than in Ti3Al. It is found that Nb atoms decrease the covalent bonding around themselves locally and increase the degree of directional bonding between Ti and Al, which may explain why Ti2AlNb (O phase) enjoys better ductility and fracture toughness than Ti3Al.

Abstract: Previous experimental results based on data (∼15×106 events) collected by the STAR detector at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider suggest event-by-event charge-separation fluctuations perpendicular to the event plane in noncentral heavy-ion collisions. Here we present the correlator previously used split into its two component parts to reveal correlations parallel and perpendicular to the event plane. The results are from a high-statistics 200-GeV Au + Au collisions data set (57×106 events) collected by the STAR experiment. We explicitly count units of charge separation from which we find clear evidence for more charge-separation fluctuations perpendicular than parallel to the event plane. We also employ a modified correlator to study the possible P-even background in same- and opposite-charge correlations, and find that the P-even background may largely be explained by momentum conservation and collective motion. © 2013 American Physical Society.

Abstract: The measurement of J/psi azimuthal anisotropy is presented as a function of transverse momentum for different centralities in Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. The measured J/psi elliptic flow is consistent with zero within errors for transverse momentum between 2 and 10 GeV/c. Our measurement suggests that J/psi particles with relatively large transverse momenta are not dominantly produced by coalescence from thermalized charm quarks, when comparing to model calculations.

Abstract: Structural stability and hydrogen adsorption capacity are two key quantities in evaluating the potential of metal-adatom decorated graphene for hydrogen storage and related devices. We have carried out extensive density functional theory calculations for the adsorption of hydrogen molecules on 12 different adatom (Ag, Au, Ca, Li, Mg, Pd, Pt, Sc, Sr, Ti, Y, and Zr) decorated graphene surfaces where the adatoms are found to be stabilized on double carbon vacancies, thus overcoming the ``clustering problem'' that occurs for adatoms on pristine graphene. Ca and Sr are predicted to bind the greatest number, namely six, of H${}_{2}$ molecules. We find an interesting correlation between the hydrogen capacity and the change of charge distribution with increasing H${}_{2}$ adsorption, where Ca, Li, Mg, Sc, Ti, Y, Sr, and Zr adatoms are partial electron donors and Ag, Au, Pd, and Pt are partial electron acceptors. The ``18-electron rule'' for predicting maximum hydrogen capacity is found not to be a reliable indicator for these systems.

Abstract: Using first-principles calculations, we investigate the band offsets, built-in electric fields, and band gaps of (0001)-oriented wurtzite ZnO/Mg${}_{0.25}$Zn${}_{0.75}$O superlattices, including the dependence on superlattice geometry and strain. Significant built-in electric fields form inside the quantum-well region that are found to be tunable over the range $0.24\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{MV}/\mathrm{cm}\ensuremath{\le}{E}_{w}\ensuremath{\le}0.63\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{MV}/\mathrm{cm}$, and potentially up to $1\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{MV}/\mathrm{cm}$ by varying the relative width of the well and barrier regions. The valence band offset at the ZnO/Mg${}_{0.25}$Zn${}_{0.75}$O interface is calculated to be 0.25--0.26 eV which, in contrast to the ``common anion rule,'' is a significant portion of the total band offset, and this is in support of recent experiment. Calculated values for the valence band offset were found to be insensitive to variations in superlattice geometry and strain. The band gap of the superlattice is determined by the competing effects of quantum confinement and the quantum-confined Stark effect, with the former being more dominant for the systems investigated. These findings will be useful in the design and optimization of ZnO/Mg${}_{x}$Zn${}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}$O superlattices for electronics and optoelectronics applications.

Abstract: We report measurements of charmed-hadron $({D}^{0},{D}^{*})$ production cross sections at midrapidity in $p+p$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV by the STAR experiment. Charmed hadrons were reconstructed via the hadronic decays ${D}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$, ${D}^{*+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{D}^{0}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ and their charge conjugates, covering the ${p}_{T}$ range of $0.6--2.0$ and $2.0--6.0\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{GeV}/c$ for ${D}^{0}$ and ${D}^{*+}$, respectively. From this analysis, the charm-pair production cross section at midrapidity is $d\ensuremath{\sigma}/dy{|}_{y=0}^{c\overline{c}}=170\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}45(\mathrm{stat}{)}_{\ensuremath{-}59}^{+38}(\mathrm{sys})\text{ }\text{ }\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{b}$. The extracted charm-pair cross section is compared to perturbative QCD calculations. The transverse momentum differential cross section is found to be consistent with the upper bound of a fixed-order next-to-leading logarithm calculation.

Abstract: Measurements of the differential cross section and the transverse single-spin asymmetry, A(N), vs x(F) for pi(0) and eta mesons are reported for 0.4 0.55, is consistent with a perturbative QCD prediction, and the eta/pi(0) cross-section ratio agrees with existing midrapidity measurements. For 0.55 < x(F) < 0.75, the average A(N) for eta is 0.210 +/- 0.056, and that for pi(0) is 0.081 +/- 0.016. The probability that these two asymmetries are equal is similar to 3%.

Abstract: In order to unravel the magnetism of Co-doped ZnO films, we have performed rigorous experiments on Co-doped ZnO grown on O-polar ZnO (0001̄) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. We find that the ZnO:Co with Co composition less than 20% is paramagnetic even at low temperatures, whereas that with Co composition of 20% shows ferromagnetism at room temperature. Although an additional n-type doping with Ga increases the magnitude of magnetization, the origin of the observed ferromagnetism is not carrier induced, as confirmed by electric-field effect measurements. Three-dimensional atom probe tomography shows that Co ions are randomly distributed, indicating that Co clustering or spinodal decomposition is not the origin of the ferromagnetism either. One possible mechanism for the ferromagnetism is hydrogen-facilitated interaction, which is supported experimentally by magnetic measurements on hydrogen-treated ZnO:Co as well as theoretically by first-principles calculation. © 2012 American Physical Society.

98. Hardness analysis of cubic metal mononitrides from first principles

Abstract: Density functional theory calculations are performed to evaluate the hardness of various cubic metal nitrides: rocksalt TiN, VN, ZrN, NbN, AlN, and SiN; zincblende AlN and BN; and diamond C for comparison. The isotropic elastic stiffness constants ${c}_{ij}$, bulk modulus $K$, shear modulus $G$, Young's modulus $E$, and isotropic Poisson's ratio $\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$ are calculated. From simulated uniaxial stress-strain curves, ideal strength values ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{\mathrm{max}}$ in the [100], [110], and [111] directions are also evaluated for all systems. In particular, rocksalt AlN is found to possess both high elastic moduli and ideal strength. These quantities are then compared for correlations with existing experimental Vicker's hardness data. The bulk modulus is found to be a poor indicator of hardness, while $E$, $G$, $1/\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$, and ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{\mathrm{max}}$ all exhibit stronger correlations. With a view to circumvent the need to run computationally expensive relaxation steps, different methodologies for approximating uniaxial stress-strain curves are introduced. Utilizing the anisotropic Poisson's ratio to approximate the relaxed transverse lattice parameters at a given axial strain is a good approximation to stress-strain curves, and the ideal strengths obtained in this way exhibit strong correlations to experimental Vicker's hardness values.

Abstract: We report measurements of the charge-separated W+(-)→e+(- )+νe(ν e) and Z/γ*→e+e- production cross sections at mid-rapidity in proton-proton collisions at √s=500 GeV. These results are based on 13.2 pb-1 of data recorded in 2009 by the STAR detector at RHIC. Production cross sections for W bosons that decay via the eν channel were measured to be σ(pp→W+X)·BR(W+→e+νe)=117.3±5.9(stat)±6.2(syst)±15.2(lumi) pb, and σ(pp→W-X)·BR(W-→e-ν e)=43.3±4.6(stat)± 3.4(syst) ±5.6(lumi) pb. For Z/γ* production, σ(pp→Z/γ*X)·BR(Z/γ*→e+e- )=7.7±2.1(stat)-0.9+0.5(syst)±1.0(lumi) pb was measured for di- lepton invariant masses me+e- between 70 and 110 GeV/c2. First measurements of the W cross section ratio, σ(pp→W+X)/σ(pp→W- X), at √s=500 GeV are also reported. Theoretical predictions, calculated using recent parton distribution functions, are found to agree with the measured cross sections.

Abstract: STAR's measurements of directed flow (v(1)) around midrapidity for pi(+/-), K-+/-, K-S(0), p, and (p) over bar in Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV are presented. A negative v(1) (y) slope is observed for most of produced particles (pi(+/-), K-+/-, K-S(0), p, and (p) over bar). In 5%-30% central collisions, a sizable difference is present between the v(1)(y) slope of protons and antiprotons, with the former being consistent with zero within errors. The v(1) excitation function is presented. Comparisons to model calculations (RQMD, UrQMD, AMPT, QGSM with parton recombination, and a hydrodynamics model with a tilted source) are made. For those models which have calculations of v(1) for both pions and protons, none of them can describe v(1()y) forpions and protons simultaneously. The hydrodynamics model with a tilted source as currently implemented cannot explain the centrality dependence of the difference between the v(1)(y) slopes of protons and antiprotons.
