Abstract To study the aerodynamic performance and wind-induced response of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) cables, CFRP cable was designed by replacing a steel cable in a tied arch bridge based on stiffness, strength and area equivalent criteria, respectively. The aerodynamic performance and wind-induced response of CFRP cable and steel cable were studied and compared by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. Based on the computational results, optimal cable replacement criterion was proposed for CFRP cable to replace steel cable. In addition, surface modification was conducted by engrooving vertical symmetric (VS), vertical asymmetric (VA) and helical symmetric (HS) V-shaped grooves to improve the aerodynamic performance and wind-induced response of CFRP cable. Results showed that CFRP cables exhibited inferior aerodynamic performance and wind-induced response in most cases. However, CFRP cable based on stiffness equivalent criterion exhibited better aerodynamic performance and wind-induced vibration properties compared to the other two cable replacement criteria, thus is regarded as the optimal substitute for steel cable. In addition, HS grooves generated symmetric disturbances and caused approximately equivalent boundary layer separation delays uniformly and continuously along the cable length, thus exhibiting better effect in decreasing the reverse flow region, the maximum negative flow velocity, the vortex shedding frequency and the wind-induced vibration amplitude of CFRP cable. Hence, the stiffness equivalent criterion combined with surface modification with HS V-shaped grooves was proposed to replace steel cable with CFRP cable. This study can provide insights into the aerodynamic performance and wind-induced response of CFRP cable and instructions for cable replacement practice.

Abstract Biomineralization is the intricate process by which living organisms orchestrate the formation of organic–inorganic composites by regulating the nucleation, orientation, growth, and assembly of inorganic minerals. As our comprehension of biomineralization principles deepens, novel strategies for fabricating inorganic materials based on these principles have emerged. Researchers can also harness biomineralization strategies to tackle challenges in both materials' science and biomedical fields, demonstrating a thriving research field. This review begins by introducing the concept of biomineralization and subsequently shifts its focus to a recently discovered chemical concept: inorganic ionic oligomers and their cross‐linking. As a novel approach for constructing inorganic materials, the inorganic ionic oligomer‐based strategy finds applications in biomimetic regeneration and repair of hard tissues, such as teeth and bones. Aside from innovative methods for material fabrication, biomineralization has emerged as an alternative method for tackling biomedical challenges by integrating materials with biological organisms, facilitating advancements in biomedical fields. Emerging material‐biological integrators play a critical role in areas like vaccine improvement, cancer therapy, universal blood transfusion, and arthritis treatment. This review highlights the profound impact of biomineralization in the development and design of high‐performance materials that go beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries, potentially promoting breakthroughs in materials science, chemical biology, biomedical, and numerous other domains.

AbstractSageretia thea (Osbeck) M.C. Johnst (1968) is an important fruit and medicinal species of Rhamnaceae family. The complete chloroplast genome (cp) of Sageretia genus was sequenced and reported for the first time in this study. The cp genome had a total length of 161,352 bp, consisting of a largesingle-copy (LSC) region of 89,802 bp, a small single-copy (SSC) region of 18,914 bp, and a pair of inverted repeat (IR) regions totaling 26,318 bp. The plastid genome contained 129 genes, including 84 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes, 8 rRNA genes. The overall GC content of the genome was found to be 37.10%. Phylogenetic analysis based on comparison with 27 chloroplast genomes revealed that S. thea is closely related to genera Rhamnus and Berchemia. The findings of this study can provide fundamental insights for the conservation, exploitation, and systematic genomic investigation of Rhamnus plants.

Abstract Cardiac microtissues provide a promising platform for disease modeling and developmental studies, which require the close monitoring of the multimodal excitation-contraction dynamics. However, no existing assessing tool can track these multimodal dynamics across the live tissue. We develop a tissue-like mesh bioelectronic system to track these multimodal dynamics. The mesh system has tissue-level softness and cell-level dimensions to enable stable embedment in the tissue. It is integrated with an array of graphene sensors, which uniquely converges both bioelectrical and biomechanical sensing functionalities in one device. The system achieves stable tracking of the excitation-contraction dynamics across the tissue and throughout the developmental process, offering comprehensive assessments for tissue maturation, drug effects, and disease modeling. It holds the promise to provide more accurate quantification of the functional, developmental, and pathophysiological states in cardiac tissues, creating an instrumental tool for improving tissue engineering and studies.

Abstract The rendering of urban 3D scenes involves a large number of models. In order to render scenes more efficiently, the main solution is to build a level of detail model (LOD). This may have the problem of building fragmentation, while relying on building a level of detail model (LOD) alone cannot meet the accuracy and fluency of large‐scale scene visualisation. Effective and reasonable data organisation has important research significance for the authors to achieve accurate and fast rendering of scenes. Therefore, the authors propose a large‐scale city model data organisation method considering building distribution to solve the above problems. This method first classifies the buildings in the scene at macro‐, meso‐ and microscales and records the classification using R‐trees. Then an adaptive quadtree is used to construct the data index of the city model. Finally, the data organisation of the large‐scale 3D city model is achieved by using the information of each node of the R‐tree as a constraint and combining with the adaptive quadtree. The results show that the method not only ensures the integrity of the user's area of interest but also can improve the efficiency of 3D scene construction.

To investigate the effects of chitosan and ε-polylysine on the cell structure and cytoprotective enzymes of Carbibacterium divergens to explore their inhibition mechanism against Carbibacterium divergens, the broth dilution method was used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of chitosan and ε-polylysine against Carbibacterium divergens. Their effects on the cellular structure of Carbibacterium divergens were then assessed by several indexes, such as growth curves, electronic conductivity, extracellular nucleic acids, extracellular proteins, and alkaline phosphatase (AKP) activity, and the microstructure of bacteria were also observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In addition, their role in oxidative stress was analyzed by detecting changes in catalase (CAT) activity and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. The results showed that the MIC of chitosan and ε-polylysine against Carbibacterium divergens was 0.1953 and 0.1563 mg/mL, respectively. The intracellular components (AKP, proteins, nucleic acids, and ions) leaked after treatment with MIC and 2MIC chitosan and ε-polylysine. Abstract Background Adenomatous polyps (APs) with inflammation are risk factors for colorectal cancer. However, the role of inflammation-related gut microbiota in promoting the progression of APs is unknown. Methods Sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene was conducted to identify characteristic bacteria in AP tissues and normal mucosa. Then, the roles of inflammation-related bacteria were clarified by Spearman correlation analysis. Furthermore, colorectal HT-29 cells, normal colon NCM460 cells, and azoxymethane-treated mice were used to investigate the effects of the characteristic bacteria on progression of APs. Results The expression levels of inflammation-related markers (diamine oxidase, d-lactate, C-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6 and interleukin-1β) were increased, whereas the expression levels of anti-inflammatory factors (interleukin-4 and interleukin-10) were significantly decreased in AP patients as compared to healthy controls. Solobacterium moorei (S. moorei) was enriched in AP tissues and fecal samples, and significantly positively correlated with serum inflammation-related markers. In vitro, S. moorei preferentially attached to HT-29 cells and stimulated cell proliferation and production of pro-inflammatory factors. In vivo, the incidence of intestinal dysplasia was significantly increased in the S. moorei group. Gavage of mice with S. moorei upregulated production of pro-inflammatory factors, suppressed proliferation of CD4+ and CD8+cells, and disrupted the integrity of the intestinal barrier, thereby accelerating progression of APs. Conclusions S. moorei accelerated the progression of AP in mice via activation of the NF-κB signaling pathway, chronic low-grade inflammation, and intestinal barrier disruption. Targeted reduction of S. moorei presents a potential strategy to prevent the progression of APs.

Experimental investigations on dynamic in-plane compressive behavior of a plain weave composite were performed using the split Hopkinson pressure bar. A quantitative criterion for calculating the constant strain rate of composites was established. Then the upper limit of strain rate, restricted by stress equilibrium and constant loading rate, was rationally estimated and confirmed by tests. Within the achievable range of 0.001/s–895/s, it was found that the strength increased first and subsequently decreased as the strain rate increased. This feature was also reflected by the turning point (579/s) of the bilinear model for strength prediction. The transition in failure mechanism, from local opening damage to completely splitting destruction, was mainly responsible for such strain rate effects. And three major failure modes were summarized under microscopic observations: fiber fracture, inter-fiber fracture, and interface delamination. Finally, by introducing a nonlinear damage variable, a simplified ZWT model was developed to characterize the dynamic mechanical response. Excellent agreement was shown between the experimental and simulated results.

Plasma membrane intrinsic proteins (PIPs) are conserved plant aquaporins that transport small molecules across the plasma membrane to trigger instant stress responses and maintain cellular homeostasis under biotic and abiotic stress. To elucidate their roles in plant immunity to pathogen attack, we characterized the expression patterns, subcellular localizations, and H2O2-transport ability of 11 OsPIPs in rice (Oryza sativa), and identified OsPIP2;6 as necessary for rice disease resistance. OsPIP2;6 resides on the plasma membrane and facilitates cytoplasmic import of the immune signaling molecule H2O2. Knockout of OsPIP2;6 increases rice susceptibility to Magnaporthe oryzae, indicating a positive function in plant immunity. OsPIP2;6 interacts with OsPIP2;2, which has been reported to increase rice resistance to pathogens via H2O2 transport. Our findings suggest that OsPIP2;6 cooperates with OsPIP2;2 as a defense signal transporter complex during plant–pathogen interaction.

Abstract Photovoltaic (PV) modules are prone to short circuits, open circuits, cracks, which can bring serious harmful effects. It is difficult to establish the corresponding PV fault models to diagnose the status of PV strings. The paper proposes a machine learning‐based stacking classifier (MLSC) for accurate fault diagnosis of PV strings. Specifically, for the operating state of PV modules, the parameter sensitivity algorithm is used to analyze the impact of characteristic factors on the characteristics of PV modules. Then based on the characteristic factors (irradiance, temperature, current, and power), MLSC is proposed to realize the accurate fault diagnosis of PV strings. This structure of MLSC is to integrate all kinds of classifiers by stacking to play the characteristics of each classifier. It combines the characteristics of various types of machine learning algorithms to improve the overall classification effect by using the advantages of each classifier. Finally, experiments reveal that MLSC improves the accuracy of PV fault diagnosis.

Most directed energy deposition (DED) implementations employ a rigid end effector to deposit material layer-by-layer, which is insufficient in cases with space constraints. To enhance the flexibility, this paper proposes a novel soft-robotic gun (SRG) based DED technology. The ideology is to replace the rigid weld gun with a tendon-driven omnidirectional-steering continuum manipulator, which a computer can numerically control. To this end, both requirements and concepts of the SRG-DED are introduced. A prototype system is designed and implemented before dedicated kinematic modelling and trajectory planning mechanisms are presented. As demonstrated by the experimental results, the developed trajectory planning algorithm improves the computational efficiency of tendon variables and enhances the consistency of trajectory tracking. The prototype system can deposit a complex path on an inclined substrate and fabricate a thin-wall component within a pipeline. The validation work confirms the feasibility and applicability of the prototype system for metal additive manufacturing applications.

ABSTRACTFritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus (FCB) is a Chinese medicine that has been used to treat lung diseases for thousands of years. This study aimed to investigate the protective effect and mechanism of four alkaloids (peimisine, ebeiedinone, imperialine and chuanbeinone) from FCB on cigarette smoke extract (CSE)-induced oxidative injury in A549 cells. The results showed that the four alkaloids could increase the levels of glutathione/oxidized glutathione (GSH/GSSG), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1), decrease the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS), thereby alleviating oxidative injury in CSE-induced A549 cells. Furthermore, after treated with four alkaloids, the mRNA expression of HO-1, NQO-1, Nrf2 and SIRT1 were increased, while MST1 and FOXO3 were decreased in CSE-induced A549 cells, which was consistent with the results of western blotting. These results suggest that the mechanism of the four alkaloids may be related to the regulation of Nrf2/Keap1 and SIRT1/FOXO3a signaling pathways.

The quality of fermented plant leaves is closely related to the interleaf microorganisms and their metabolic activities. In this experiment, a multi-omics analysis was applied to investigate the link between the structural composition of the phyllosphere microbial community and the main metabolites during the fermentation process. It was found that the whole fermentation process of cigar leaves could be divided into three stages, in which the Mid-Stage was the most active period of microbial metabolic activities and occupied an important position. Staphylococcus, Brevundimonas, Acinetobacter, Brevibacterium, Pantoea, Aspergillus, Wallemia, Meyerozyma, Sampaiozyma, Adosporium and Trichomonascus played important roles in this fermentation. Staphylococcus and Aspergillus are the microorganisms that play an important role in the fermentation process. Staphylococcus were strongly correlated with lipids and amino acids, despite its low abundance, Stenotrophomonas is importantly associated with terpene and plays a significant role throughout the process. It is worth noting that Wapper exists more characteristic fungal genera than Filler and is more rapid in fermentation progress, which implies that the details of the fermentation process should be adjusted appropriately to ensure stable quality when faced with plant leaves of different genotypes. This experiment explored the relationship between metabolites and microorganisms, and provided a theoretical basis for further optimizing the fermentation process of plant leaves and developing techniques to improve product quality. Biomarker is mostly present in the pre-fermentation phase, but the mid-fermentation phase is the most important part of the process.

IntroductionFlow, defined as a heightened state of consciousness characterized by intense concentration during an activity, is influenced primarily by the perceived challenge and the dynamic equilibrium of skills. This investigation focuses on the patterns of flow state attainment and its elicitation mechanisms within the context of piano performance among Chinese music college students.MethodsOur study establishes a framework for accessing flow, utilizing quantitative data from music ontology to gauge the level of challenge and the level of music acquisition to assess skills. Additionally, we integrate external factors such as music culture heterogeneity and demographic variables to elucidate the causes and moderating effects of flow on piano performance.ResultsThe findings reveal a positive correlation between flow and performance, with the model of challenge and skill induction partially explaining these results. Notably, melodic Shannon Entropy emerges as a potential indicator of challenge, suggesting its relevance in future studies on flow.DiscussionThis research provides multidimensional insights into the interplay between performance and flow in piano performance, guiding future investigations to explore the musical quantitative perspective more deeply.

Abstract Myocardial infarction (MI), a consequence of coronary artery occlusion, triggers the degradation of ferritin, resulting in elevated levels of free iron in the heart and thereby inducing ferroptosis. Targeting myocardial ferroptosis through the chelation of excess iron has therapeutic potential for MI treatment. However, iron chelation in post ischemic injury areas using conventional iron‐specific chelators is hindered by ineffective myocardial intracellular chelation, rapid clearance, and high systemic toxicity. A chitosan‐desferrioxamine nanosponge (CDNS) is designed by co‐crosslinking chitosan and deferoxamine through noncovalent gelation to address these challenges. This architecture facilitates direct iron chelation regardless of deferoxamine (DFO) release due to its sponge‐like porous hydrogel structure. Upon cellular internalization, CDNS can effectively chelate cellular iron and facilitate the efflux of captured iron, thereby inhibiting ferroptosis and associated oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation. In MI mouse models, myocardial injection of CDNS promotes sustainable retention and the suppression of ferroptosis in the infarcted heart. This intervention improves cardiac function and alleviates adverse cardiac remodeling post‐MI, leading to decreased oxidative stress and the promotion of angiogenesis due to ferroptosis inhibition by CDNS in the infarcted heart. This study reveals a nanosponge‐based nanomedicine targeting myocardial ferroptosis with efficient iron chelation and efflux, offering a promising MI treatment.

The rational allocation of carbon emission quotas is crucial for improving the orderly operation of carbon markets. As a major energy-consuming province in China, Jiangsu's cities must allocate allowable carbon emissions effectively to meet China's 2030 peaking target. This study aims to achieve an optimal allocation of carbon emission quotas by considering principles such as responsibility, efficiency, and equity. To accomplish this goal, we developed a three-stage progressive optimization allocation process. This process incorporates the entropy weight TOPSIS allocation model, zero-sum game-DEA model, and Gini coefficient. The initial allocation scheme revealed that cities in southern Jiangsu, which have higher economic development levels, also received higher carbon emission quotas, compromising efficiency and equity. In response, the second stage involves adjusting the allocation to optimize efficiency for each city, aligning the quotas more closely with historical levels. Finally, the third stage uses the Gini coefficient to further refine the allocation scheme, achieving a more balanced distribution that aligns responsibility, efficiency, and fairness. This research highlights the importance of a structured approach to carbon quota allocation, ensuring a balance that supports both environmental goals and equitable development.

The present paper investigates the dynamic behaviors of a bubble restricted by two parallel plates near an elliptical wall. The typical experimental phenomena of the bubble are recorded employing the high-speed photography and a theoretical Kelvin impulse model is established. The impacts of the spatial position and the curvature of the wall on the bubble collapse behaviors are quantitatively investigated through the theoretical model and verified against the experimental results. The Kelvin impulse intensity and the direction during the bubble collapse process are compared and discussed for different elliptical-shaped walls. The main conclusions include: (1) During the bubble collapse process, the phenomenon of the bubble uneven splitting is discovered. (2) At different spatial positions and wall curvatures, the bubble collapse jet angle, movement distance, and velocity are in good agreement with the theoretical Kelvin impulse predictions. (3) As the short-to-long axis ratio increases, the differences in the distributions of the Kelvin impulse intensity and the direction near the elliptical wall gradually become larger, and the range of the influence of the impulse intensity expands.

In this paper, we study the quantum security of block ciphers based on Simon’s period-finding quantum algorithm. We explored the relations between periodic functions and truncated differentials. The basic observation is that truncated differentials with a probability of 1 can be used to construct periodic functions, and two such constructions are presented with the help of a new notion called difference-annihilation matrix. This technique releases us from the tedious manual work of verifying the period of functions. Based on these new constructions, we find an 8-round quantum distinguisher for LBlock and a 9/10/11/13/15-round quantum distinguisher for SIMON-32/48/64/96/128 which are the best results as far as we know. Besides, to explore the security bounds of block cipher structures against Simon’s algorithm based quantum attacks, the unified structure, which unifies the Feistel, Lai-Massey, and most generalized Feistel structures, is studied. We estimate the exact round number of probability 1 truncated differentials that one can construct. Based on these results, one can easily check the quantum security of specific block ciphers that are special cases of unified structures, when the details of the non-linear building blocks are not considered.

Abstract Although it is known that the frequency and intensity of heatwaves are affected by the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), unknown are the ENSO modulations on the moving properties (e.g., moving distance and speed) of spatiotemporally contiguous heatwaves. Here, we investigate the relationship between ENSO and the moving patterns of contiguous heatwaves. We show that contiguous heatwaves are likely more frequent, more persistent, and longer‐traveling, but slower‐moving during El Niño than La Niña episodes. The differences in the tropical contiguous heatwaves between El Niño and La Niña are influenced by persistent high‐pressure anomalies. During the following summers, El Niño can induce anomalous atmospheric circulation characterized by an intensified subsidence over the western North Pacific and ascending motion over the tropical Indian and Pacific Oceans. These features provide favorable conditions for the occurrence and maintenance of contiguous heatwaves.

Stipa breviflora is a dominant species in the desert steppe of Northern China. Grazing is the main land use pattern of grassland, which could cause a variety of adaptive evolutionary mechanisms in plant community composition as well as individual plant growth and morphological characteristics. However, very little is known about the morphological structure and transcriptional regulation response to different grazing intensities in S. breviflora. In this study, transcriptome and anatomical analyses of S. breviflora under different grazing intensities, including no grazing, moderate grazing, and heavy grazing, were performed. The anatomical analysis results showed that epidermis cells and xylems significantly thicken with grazing intensity, suggesting that grazing results in increasing lignification. Furthermore, the components of cell walls such as lignin, cellulose, hemicellulose, and pectin were all increased dramatically and significantly under both moderate and heavy grazing. Transcriptome analysis showed that the differentially expressed genes related to different grazing intensities were also engaged in plant cell wall formation and in photosynthesis and respiration. In addition, the activities of ATP synthase and Rubisco-activating enzyme increased significantly with enhanced grazing intensity and differed significantly between moderate and heavy grazing intensities. The trends in transcriptome and plant phenotype changes are consistent. Taken together, these results indicated that S. breviflora has evolved a grazing tolerance strategy under long-term grazing conditions, influencing photosynthesis and respiration in terms of its own structure and enzyme activities in the body, to maintain normal life activities under different grazing conditions.

Abstract Precipitation exhibits a pronounced seasonal cycle, of which the phase and amplitude are closely associated with water resource management. While previous studies suggested an emerged delaying phase in the past decades, whether the amplified amplitude has emerged is controversial. Using multiple observational data sets and climate simulations, here we show that the amplification of precipitation annual cycle has emerged in most global land areas since the 1980s, especially in the tropics. These amplifications are mainly driven by anthropogenic emissions, and will be further intensified by 17.6% in the future (2081–2100) under high emission scenario (Shared Socioeconomic Pathways, SSP585), and limited to 7.2% under SSP126 scenario, relative to the historical period (1982–2014). Precipitation seasonality will be amplified by 4.2% for each 1°C of global warming, which is seen in all emission scenarios. The mitigation of lower emissions is helpful for alleviating the amplification of precipitation seasonality in a warming world.

The “gut-skin” axis has been proved and is considered as a novel therapy for the prevention of skin aging. The antioxidant efficacy of oligomannonic acid (MAOS) makes it an intriguing target for use to improve skin aging. The present study further explored whereby MAOS-mediated gut-skin axis balance prevented skin aging in mice. The data indicated the skin aging phenotypes, oxidative stress, skin mitochondrial dysfunction, and intestinal dysbiosis (especially the butyrate and HIF-1α levels decreased) in aging mice. Similarly, fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) from aging mice rebuild the aging-like phenotypes. Further, we demonstrated MAOS-mediated colonic butyrate-HIF-1α axis homeostasis promoted the entry of butyrate into the skin, upregulated mitophagy level and ultimately improving skin aging via HDAC3/PHD/HIF-1α/mitophagy loop in skin of mice. Overall, our study offered a better insights of the effectiveness of alginate oligosaccharides (AOS), promised to become a personalized targeted therapeutic agents, on gut-skin axis disorder inducing skin aging.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a chronic and progressive disease that eventually leads to heart failure (HF) and subsequent fatality if left untreated. Right ventricular (RV) function has proven prognostic values in patients with a variety of heart diseases including PAH. PAH is predominantly a right heart disease; however, given the nature of the continuous circulatory system and the presence of shared septum and pericardial constraints, the interdependence of the right and left ventricles is a factor that requires consideration. Accurate and timely assessment of ventricular function is very important in the management of patients with PAH for disease outcomes and prognosis. Non-invasive modalities such as cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) and echocardiography (two-dimensional and three-dimensional), and nuclear medicine, positron emission tomography (PET) play a crucial role in the assessment of ventricular function and disease prognosis. Each modality has its own strengths and limitations, hence this review article sheds light on (i) ventricular dysfunction in patients with PAH and RV–LV interdependence in such patients, (ii) the strengths and limitations of all available modalities and parameters for the early assessment of ventricular function, as well as their prognostic value, and (iii) lastly, the challenges faced and the potential future advancement in these modalities for accurate and early diagnosis of ventricular function in PAH.

Background Elevated white blood cell count, fibrinogen levels, and lower levels of albumin signify higher systemic inflammatory response, hypercoagulable state, and poorer nutritional status, respectively. However, a consistent conclusion could not be drawn on whether the association between inflammatory markers and cardiovascular disease was affected by the presence of chronic kidney disease (CKD). We aimed to explore the association between inflammation and adverse outcomes in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS), as well as whether this association differs due to the presence of CKD. Methods and Results This research was based on the Third China National Stroke Registry. The main adverse outcomes were poor functional outcome, stroke recurrence, and combined vascular event after 1 year. Inflammation was defined as the worst quartile of at least 2 of the aforementioned 3 markers. Finally, 8493 patients with AIS were enrolled in this study. The adjusted odds ratios/hazard ratios and 95% CIs of inflammation were 1.58 (1.34–1.86) for poor functional outcomes, 1.25 (1.06–1.47) for stroke recurrence, and 1.25 (1.06–1.46) for combined vascular event. The association between inflammation and adverse outcomes existed only in patients with AIS without CKD, although the interaction between CKD and inflammation was not statistically significant. (P for interaction >0.05). Conclusions Inflammation, which was defined as a combination of fibrinogen, white blood cell count, and albumin, was associated with all 1‐year adverse outcomes among patients with AIS. Routine assessment of these biomarkers could become a potential part of the clinical evaluation for patients with AIS, especially those without CKD, aiding clinicians in risk stratification and treatment decision‐making.

ObjectiveTo examine the survival, disease burden and their associates among pneumoconiosis patients reported in Nanjing city during 1956 – 2021 for developing targeted measures on pneumoconiosis prevention and control. MethodsThe records of 3456 confirmed pneumoconiosis patients reported in Nanjing from 1956 through 2021 were extracted from the Information Management System for Occupational Disease Prevention and Control of Jiangsu Province and face-to-face or telephone interviews were conducted among the patients in October 2022 for a follow-up survey. Life table and the Kaplan-Meier methods were used in survival analysis, and Cox proportional hazard regression model was applied to analyze influencing factors of survival time. Disease burden of pneumoconiosis was assessed comprehensively using disability adjusted life years (DALY), years of life lost (YLL), and years lost due to disability (YLD). ResultsOf the 3 333 patients with valid responses, 89.3% were male; 89.3% had stage I pneumoconiosis at the first diagnosis; and 72.1% were diagnosed as silicosis. The median survival time for all the patients up to December 31, was 30.20 (95% confidence interval [95%CI]: 29.53 – 30.86) years. The results of Cox proportional hazard regression analysis showed that aged ≥ 30 years and having stage III pneumoconiosis at the first diagnosis were risk factors of low survival; while, being female and being engaged in manufacturing industry were protective factors of survival for the patients. In terms of disease burden caused by pneumoconiosis during the follow-up period for all the patients, the person-years of total cumulative DALY, YLD, and YLL were 27 529.49, 23 440.46, and 4 089.03 and the years of per capita DALY, YLD, and YLL were 8.26, 7.03, and 2.53, respectively. Significantly declining trend over the follow-up period was observed in years period per capita DALY (χ2trend = 776.437), YLD (χ2trend = 206.153), and YLL (χ2trend = 1 040.571) (P < 0.001 for all). The highest year period-specific YLD (10 042.02 person-years) and DALY (10 619.02 person-years) were observed in 1991 – 2000 but the year period-specific YLL increased gradually over the follow-up period, with the highest of 1 956.35 person-years for the years from 2011 to 2021. ConclusionThe prevalence of pneumoconiosis among workers in Nanjing city was generally under control during 1956 – 2021 but the disease burden caused by the occupational disease still needs to be concerned, especially among groups at higher risk of the disease.

Abstract Current treatment for functional dyspepsia (FD) has limited and unsustainable efficacy. Probiotics have the sustainable potential to alleviate FD. This randomized controlled clinical trial (Chinese Clinical Trial Registry, ChiCTR2000041430) assigned 200 FD patients to receive placebo, positive-drug (rabeprazole), or Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BL-99 (BL-99; low, high doses) for 8-week. The primary outcome was the clinical response rate (CRR) of FD score after 8-week treatment. The secondary outcomes were CRR of FD score at other periods, and PDS, EPS, serum indicators, fecal microbiota and metabolites. The CRR in FD score for the BL-99_high group [45 (90.0%)] was significantly higher than that for placebo [29 (58.0%), p = 0.001], BL-99_low [37 (74.0%), p = 0.044] and positive_control [35 (70.0%), p = 0.017] groups after 8-week treatment. This effect was sustained until 2-week after treatment but disappeared 8-week after treatment. Further metagenomic and metabolomics revealed that BL-99 promoted the accumulation of SCFA-producing microbiota and the increase of SCFA levels in stool and serum, which may account for the increase of serum gastrin level. This study supports the potential use of BL-99 for the treatment of FD.

Abstract We report the development of a head-mounted photoacoustic fiberscope for cerebral imaging in a freely behaving mouse. The 4.5-gram imaging probe has a 9-µm lateral resolution and 0.2-Hz frame rate over a 1.2-mm wide area. The probe can continuously monitor cerebral oxygenation and hemodynamic responses at single-vessel resolution, showing significantly different cerebrovascular responses to external stimuli under anesthesia and in the freely moving state. For example, when subjected to high-concentration CO2 respiration, enhanced oxygenation to compensate for hypercapnia can be visualized due to cerebral regulation in the freely moving state. Comparative studies exhibit significantly weakened compensation capabilities in obese rodents. This new imaging modality can be used for investigating both normal and pathological cerebrovascular functions and shows great promise for studying cerebral activity, disorders and their treatments.

Abstract Background It is unclear whether the effects of abnormal gestational weight gain (GWG) on birth outcomes are differently in women with different maternal ages. This study aimed to investigate maternal age-specific association between GWG and adverse birth weights in Chinese women older than 30. Methods 19,854 mother-child dyads were selected from a prospective cohort study in Southwest China between 2019 and 2022. Logistic regression model was used to assess the association between GWG, which defined by the 2009 Institute of Medicine guidelines, and adverse birth weights including large- and small-for-gestational-age (LGA and SGA), stratified by maternal age (31–34 years and ≥ 35 years). Results In both maternal age groups, excessive and insufficient GWG were associated with increased odds of LGA and SGA, respectively. After women were categorized by pre-pregnancy body mass index, the associations remained significant in women aged 31–34 years, whereas for women aged ≥ 35 years, the association between excessive GWG and the risk of LGA was only significant in normal weight and overweight/obese women, and the significant effect of insufficient GWG on the risk of SGA was only observed in underweight and overweight/obese women. Moreover, among overweight/obese women, the magnitude of the association between insufficient GWG and the risk of SGA was greater in those aged ≥ 35 years (31–34 years: OR 2.08, 95% CI 1.19–3.55; ≥35 years: OR 2.65, 95% CI 1.47–4.74), while the impact of excessive GWG on the risk of LGA was more pronounced in those aged 31–34 years (31–34 years: OR 2.18, 95% CI 1.68–2.88; ≥35 years: OR 1.71, 95% CI 1.30–2.25). Conclusions The stronger associations between abnormal GWG and adverse birth weights were mainly observed in women aged 31–34 years, and more attention should be paid to this age group.

Controlling intracranial pressure, nerve cell regeneration, and microenvironment regulation are the key issues in reducing mortality and disability in acute brain injury. There is currently a lack of effective treatment methods. Hibernation has the characteristics of low temperature, low metabolism, and hibernation rhythm, as well as protective effects on the nervous, cardiovascular, and motor systems. Artificial hibernation technology is a new technology that can effectively treat acute brain injury by altering the body's metabolism, lowering the body's core temperature, and allowing the body to enter a state similar to hibernation. This review introduces artificial hibernation technology, including mild hypothermia treatment technology, central nervous system regulation technology, and artificial hibernation-inducer technology. Upon summarizing the relevant research on artificial hibernation technology in acute brain injury, the research results show that artificial hibernation technology has neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and oxidative stress-resistance effects, indicating that it has therapeutic significance in acute brain injury. Furthermore, artificial hibernation technology can alleviate the damage of ischemic stroke, traumatic brain injury, cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral infarction, and other diseases, providing new strategies for treating acute brain injury. However, artificial hibernation technology is currently in its infancy and has some complications, such as electrolyte imbalance and coagulation disorders, which limit its use. Further research is needed for its clinical application.

Right ventricular function is independently associated with poor clinical outcomes in patients with various cardiovascular diseases including pulmonary hypertension (PH). The complex geometry and mode of contractility means the right ventricle (RV) inlet and outlet are not in line; hence, 2-dimensional echocardiography fails to accurately quantify RV volumes and function in such patients. Three-dimensional echocardiography (3DE) allows for reliable and reproducible quantification of RV volumes and function by overcoming these limitations of conventional echocardiography. This review focuses on the 3DE assessment of RV function in patients with PH and discusses the following points: (1) acquiring an RV data set for 3DE imaging, including details of all available 3DE systems and software utilized in daily practice; (2) the reliability and feasibility of RV remodeling measured with 3DE with different modalities in patients with PH; and (3) the prognostic value of 3DE-derived RV function in such patients.

From September 20 to 23, 2023, the 17th National Postgraduates Symposium on Environmental and Occupational Medicine was successfully held in Baotou, Inner Mongolia. This symposium was co-sponsored by the Editorial Board of Journal of Environmental and Occupational Medicine and School of Public Health, Baotou Medical College, Inner Mongolia University of Science and Technology. Themed "Research and practice: Healing the schism", the symposium aimed to activate academic thinking, expand research perspectives, encourage innovation awareness, enhance school-to-school exchanges, and cultivate young talents, especially to promote the close integration of academic research and public health practice. Participants from more than 30 universities and research institutions submitted a total of 82 articles. The symposium also gathered about 200 authors and postgraduates from all over the country to discuss the latest progress and future development in the field of environment and occupational medicine and strive to apply the research results to public health practice.

Abstract We investigate the single transverse-spin asymmetry with a $$\sin (\phi _h-\phi _S)$$ sin ( ϕ h - ϕ S ) modulation in the charged Kaon produced and in $$\Lambda $$ Λ hyperon produced SIDIS process within the theoretical framework of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization at the next-to-leading-logarithmic order. The asymmetry is contributed by the convolution of Sivers function and the unpolarized fragmentation function $$D_1$$ D 1 for the produced hadron. The parametrization for the proton Qiu–Sterman function, which is closely related to the Sivers function, is adopted to numerically estimate the Sivers asymmetry at the kinematical region of Electron Ion Collider (EIC) and Electron Ion Collider in China (EicC). The TMD evolution of the TMD parton distribution functions are considered by employing the non-perturbative Sudakov form factor. It is found that the predicted Sivers asymmetries $$A_{UT}^{\sin (\phi _h-\phi _S)}$$ A UT sin ( ϕ h - ϕ S ) as functions of x, z and $$P_{hT}$$ P hT are sizable at the kinematical configurations of both EIC and EicC. The strange constituent of the produced charged Kaon and $$\Lambda $$ Λ hyperon in the final state can be a promising probe of the sea quark Sivers function as well as the flavor dependence in the proton target. Therefore, it is important to utilize the future EIC facilities to constrain the sea quark distribution functions as well as the validity of the generalized universality of the Sivers function.

Abstract Motivated by the recently observed $$D_{s0}(2590)$$ D s 0 ( 2590 ) state by LHCb, we investigate the mass spectrum and the strong decay properties of the charmed-strange mesons within the Godfrey–Isgur model considering the coupled-channel effects. One finds that the $$D^*K^*$$ D ∗ K ∗ contributions to the mass shifts are large for all the charmed-strange states, which is maybe due to the spin-enhancement effect. Our results support that $$D_{s0}^*(2317)$$ D s 0 ∗ ( 2317 ) and $$D_{s1}(2460)$$ D s 1 ( 2460 ) could be interpreted as the $$D_{s}(1^3P_0)$$ D s ( 1 3 P 0 ) and $$D_{s}(1^3P_1)$$ D s ( 1 3 P 1 ) states with larger DK and $$D^*K$$ D ∗ K components, respectively, although the probabilities of the DK and $$D^*K$$ D ∗ K components for $$D_{s0}^*(2317)$$ D s 0 ∗ ( 2317 ) and $$D_{s1}(2460)$$ D s 1 ( 2460 ) are smaller than other theoretical predictions, which may be due to our neglect of the direct interaction of the meson components. Meanwhile, $$D_{s1}(2700)$$ D s 1 ( 2700 ) , $$D_{s1}(2536)$$ D s 1 ( 2536 ) , $$D^*_{s2}(2573)$$ D s 2 ∗ ( 2573 ) , $$D_{s1}^*(2860)$$ D s 1 ∗ ( 2860 ) , $$D_{s3}^*(2860)$$ D s 3 ∗ ( 2860 ) , and $$D_{sJ}^*(3040)$$ D sJ ∗ ( 3040 ) could be well interpreted as the $$D_s(2^3S_1)$$ D s ( 2 3 S 1 ) , $$D_s(1^1P_1)$$ D s ( 1 1 P 1 ) , $$D_s(1^3P_2)$$ D s ( 1 3 P 2 ) , $$D_s(1^3D_1)$$ D s ( 1 3 D 1 ) , $$D_s(1^3D_3)$$ D s ( 1 3 D 3 ) , and $$D_s(2^1P_1)$$ D s ( 2 1 P 1 ) states, respectively. Although the $$D_{s0}(2590)$$ D s 0 ( 2590 ) mass is about 50 MeV less than our prediction for the $$D_{s0}(2S)$$ D s 0 ( 2 S ) state, its width is still in good agreement with the one of $$D_{s0}(2S)$$ D s 0 ( 2 S ) . Therefore, $$D_{s0}(2590)$$ D s 0 ( 2590 ) state needs to be further confirmed by the experimental measurements, and the more precise information about $$D_{s0}(2590)$$ D s 0 ( 2590 ) will shed light on its assignment of $$D_{s0}(2S)$$ D s 0 ( 2 S ) . Furthermore, we predict the masses and the strong decay properties of the charmed-strange mesons with masses around 3 GeV, which would be helpful to experimentally search for these states.

Abstract Our previous work demonstrated the tendon-derived extracellular matrix (ECM) extracts as vital niches to specifically direct mesenchymal stem cells towards tenogenic differentiation. This study aims to further define the effective ECM molecules capable of teno-lineage induction on human adipose-derived stem cells (hASCs) and test their function for tendon engineering. By detecting the teno-markers expression levels in hASCs exposed to various substrate coatings, collagen I (COL1) and fibromodulin (FMOD) were identified to be the key molecules as a combination and further employed to the modification of poly(L-lactide-co-ε-caprolactone) electrospun nanoyarns, which showed advantages in inducting seeded hASCs for teno-lineage specific differentiation. Under dynamic mechanical loading, modified scaffold seeded with hASCs formed neo-tendon in vitro at the histological level and formed better tendon tissue in vivo with mature histology and enhanced mechanical properties. Primary mechanistic investigation with RNA sequencing demonstrated that the inductive mechanism of these two molecules for hASCs tenogenic differentiation was directly correlated with positive regulation of peptidase activity, regulation of cell-substrate adhesion and regulation of cytoskeletal organization. These biological processes were potentially affected by LOC101929398/has-miR-197-3p/TENM4 ceRNA regulation axis. In summary, COL1 and FMOD in combination are the major bioactive molecules in tendon ECM for likely directing tenogenic phenotype of hASCs and certainly valuable for hASCs-based tendon engineering.

Abstract Background In the context of an aging population, the Gerontological Nursing course is becoming more and more important. Escape room games have been shown to have a positive effect on nursing education, but they have not been applied in the Gerontological Nursing course. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of adding an escape room game-based learning activity at the end of classroom teaching in a Gerontological Nursing course on nursing students’ learning attitude and game flow experience. Methods In April 2023, a total of 84 nursing students from two classes at a medical school in Northeast China were selected for the study, and the classes were divided into a test group (n = 41) and a control group (n = 43). Both groups received regular classroom teaching on “Safe Medication Care for the Elderly”, and the test group participated in an escape room game at the end of the classroom teaching. General information about the nursing students in both groups was collected prior to participation; learning attitude were measured before and after participation; and game flow experience was measured before and after participation in the test group. Data were analyzed using independent samples t-tests and paired samples t-tests. Results There was no statistically significant difference in the general information and learning attitude of nursing students between the two groups before participation. After participation, the total learning attitude score of nursing students in the test group was (73.17 ± 1.67) and that of the control group was (61.63 ± 2.66), and the difference was statistically significant (p

The traditional organic and inorganic solvents used for polysaccharide extraction generally have long extraction time, large solvent consumption, low extraction efficiency and certain pollution problems, and the exploration of new safe solvents has become a hot issue in polysaccharide extraction. As an emerging green solvent, low eutectic solvent (DES) has a variety of solvent characteristics that traditional organic solvents do not possess, and has been widely used in the field of plant polysaccharide extraction in recent years. In this paper, the composition, main properties, synthesis method and important factors affecting the properties of DES are reviewed, and the progress of the application of DES in the extraction of plant polysaccharides such as tea polysaccharides, herbal polysaccharides and peel pectin are summarized.Compared with traditional water and acid-base extraction, the extraction conditions of DES are relatively mild and the energy consumption is lower. The extracted plant polysaccharides have higher extraction rate and purity, and the biological activity and biocompleteness of polysaccharides are better. The limitations and potentials of DES in plant polysaccharide extraction are further elaborated, aiming to provide ideas and theoretical references for the research related to the extraction of plant polysaccharides by DES.

Background: Timely diagnosis and treatment of silent cerebrovascular disease (SCD) are critical for future cerebrovascular disease prevention, whereas asymptomatic specificity of SCD can lead to a lack of reasonable healthcare utilization. In China, access barriers to care for SCD patients is rarely studied. This study aimed to estimate the access barriers to care for SCD patients in rural China and explored associated factors. Methods: We constructed a demand-side questionnaire using the six-dimensional model of access barriers to care, and collected survey data in Guizhou province, China. Data from SCD patients were collected including demographics, health status, and self-perceived access barriers to care. Linear regression was used to estimate the association between access barriers to care and self-reported health status. Results: A total of 162 SCD patients were included in the analysis. Abstract Objective There are no specific magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features that distinguish pilocytic astrocytoma (PA) from adamantinomatous craniopharyngioma (ACP). In this study we compared the frequency of a novel enhancement characteristic on MRI (called the cut green pepper sign) in PA and ACP. Methods Consecutive patients with PA (n = 24) and ACP (n = 36) in the suprasellar region were included in the analysis. The cut green pepper sign was evaluated on post-contrast T1WI images independently by 2 neuroradiologists who were unaware of the pathologic diagnosis. The frequency of cut green pepper sign in PA and ACP was compared with Fisher’s exact test. Results The cut green pepper sign was identified in 50% (12/24) of patients with PA, and 5.6% (2/36) with ACP. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) of the cut green pepper sign for diagnosing PA were 50%, 94.4%, 85.7% and 73.9%, respectively. There was a statistically significant difference in the age of patients with PA with and without the cut green pepper sign (12.3 ± 9.2 years vs. 5.5 ± 4.4 years, p = 0.035). Conclusion The novel cut green pepper sign can help distinguish suprasellar PA from ACP on MRI.

Abstract Background JianPi QingRe HuaYu Methods (JQH) have been long used to treat chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) and precancerous lesions of gastric cancer (PLGC). However, whether JQH can inhibit the transformation of gastritis to gastric cancer (GC) remains unclear. Methods Herein, we first retrieved the active ingredients and targets of JQH from the TCMSP database and the targets related to the gastric inflammation-cancer transformation from public databases. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to gastric inflammation-cancer transformation were identified from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Then, we obtained the potential therapeutic targets of JQH in treating gastric inflammation-cancer transformation by intersecting drugs and disease targets. The Gene Ontology (GO), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), and protein–protein interaction (PPI) analyses of the potential therapeutic targets were conducted using R software. Next, we conducted molecular docking and in vitro experiments to validate our results. Results We obtained 214 potential therapeutic targets of JQH by intersecting drugs and disease targets. We found that the potential mechanisms of JQH in treating gastric inflammation-cancer transformation might be related to JAK-STAT, Wnt, p53 and VEGF signaling pathways. The molecular docking indicated that quercetin, as the main active ingredient of JQH, might inhibit gastric inflammation-cancer transformation by binding with specific receptors. Because radiation belt electrons can pose a potential threat to the safety of satellites orbiting in space, it is of great importance to develop a reliable model that can predict the highly dynamic variations in outer radiation belt electron fluxes. In the present study, we develop a forecast model of radiation belt electron fluxes based on the data assimilation method, in terms of Van Allen Probe measurements combined with three-dimensional radiation belt numerical simulations. Our forecast model can cover the entire outer radiation belt with a high temporal resolution (1 hour) and a spatial resolution of 0.25 L over a wide range of both electron energy (0.1–5.0 MeV) and pitch angle (5°–90°). On the basis of this model, we forecast hourly electron fluxes for the next 1, 2, and 3 days during an intense geomagnetic storm and evaluate the corresponding prediction performance. Our model can reasonably predict the storm-time evolution of radiation belt electrons with high prediction efficiency (up to ~0.8–1). The best prediction performance is found for ~0.3–3 MeV electrons at L = ~3.25–4.5, which extends to higher L and lower energies with increasing pitch angle. Our results demonstrate that the forecast model developed can be a powerful tool to predict the spatiotemporal changes in outer radiation belt electron fluxes, and the model has both scientific significance and practical implications.

Blanket is of vital importance for engineering application of the fusion reactor. Nuclear heat deposition in materials is the main heat source in blanket structure. In this paper, the three-dimensional method for thermal-hydraulics/neutronics coupling analysis is developed and applied for the full-scale module of the helium-cooled ceramic breeder tritium breeding blanket (HCCB TBB) designed for China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (CFETR). The explicit coupling scheme is used to support data transfer for coupling analysis based on cell-to-cell mapping method. The coupling algorithm is realized by the user-defined function compiled in Fluent. The three-dimensional model is established, and then the coupling analysis is performed using the paralleled Coupling Analysis of Thermal-hydraulics and Neutronics Interface Code (CATNIC). The results reveal the relatively small influence of the coupling analysis compared to the traditional method using the radial fitting function of internal heat source. However, the coupling analysis method is quite important considering the nonuniform distribution of the neutron wall loading (NWL) along the poloidal direction. Finally, the structure optimization of the blanket is carried out using the coupling method to satisfy the thermal requirement of all materials. The nonlinear effect between thermal-hydraulics and neutronics is found during the blanket structure optimization, and the tritium production performance is slightly reduced after optimization. Such an adverse effect should be thoroughly evaluated in the future work.

The high percentage of renewable energy connected to the grid requires high operational flexibility of combined heat and power (CHP) units. As two products of the CHP units, electricity and heat are coupled, making it challenging to achieve coordinated control. The thermal energy storage (TES) system can smooth out the fluctuations in heat load demand by storing or releasing heat, thus aiding in the decoupling and coordinated control of electricity and heat. In this paper, an optimized control strategy of CHP units integrated with the TES system is proposed to improve the units’ operating flexibility. First, according to the operating mechanism, the dynamic models of the CHP unit and the TES system are established. On this basis, considering the heat source steam active response based on the linear quadratic regulator and the heat-supply support of the TES system, the boiler-turbine-heating-storage coordinated control system of a CHP unit is designed. The simulation experiment is conducted in a 300 MW CHP unit. The results show that compared with the conventional control strategy, the MAE, MAPE, MSE, and RMSE indicators of the electrical power output are decreased by 45.88%, 45.28%, 71.95%, and 47.04%, respectively.

Fusarium head blight (FHB), primarily caused by Fusarium graminearum, is a devastating crop disease that leads to significant declines in wheat yield and quality worldwide. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are found to play significant functions in various biological processes, but their regulatory functions in the sexual reproduction and pathogenicity of F. graminearum have not been studied extensively. This study identified an antisense lncRNA, named lncRsn, located in the transcription initiation site region between the 5′-flanking gene FgSna and the 3′-flanking gene FgPta. A deletion mutant of lncRsn (ΔlncRsn) was constructed through homologous recombination. ΔlncRsn exhibited huge reductions in pathogen and sexual reproduction. Additionally, the deletion of lncRsn disrupted the biosynthesis of deoxynivalenol (DON) and impaired the formation of infection structures. RT-qPCR analysis reveals that lncRsn may negatively regulate the transcription of the target gene FgSna. This study found that lncRsn plays an important role in sexual and asexual reproduction, pathogenicity, virulence, osmotic stress, and cell wall integrity (CWI) in F. graminearum. Further characterization of pathogenesis-related genes and the reaction between lncRsn and protein-coding genes will aid in developing novel approaches for controlling F. graminearum diseases.

Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) offers a viable solution for fabricating large-scale metallic parts, which contain various forms of inclined thick-walled structure. Due to the variety of heat dissipation conditions at different positions, the inclined thick-walled structure is a major challenge in fabrication that may produce collapses and defects. However, there is a lack of effective sensing method for acquiring the forming appearance of individual beads in the structure. This paper proposes a novel approach for extracting individual bead profiles during the WAAM process. The approach utilizes a structured-laser sensor to capture the morphology of the surface before and after deposition, thereby enabling an accurate acquisition of the bead profile by integrating the laser stripes. Utilizing the proposed approach, the research investigated the forming mechanism of beads in inclined thick-walled components that were fabricated by various deposition parameters. The width of the overlapping area at the overhanging feature decreased as the layer number increased, while the height of the same area increased. The height of the overlapping area in each layer increased with an increase in deposition current and decreased when the deposition speed was increased. These phenomena suggest that the heat input is a major factor that influences the formation of the overhanging feature. Both the deposition current and deposition velocity influence heat input, and thereby have an effect in enhancing the geometrical accuracy of an overhanging feature. The experimental results indicate that the proposed approach facilitates morphology change investigation, providing a sufficient reference for optimizing deposition parameters.

We aimed to investigate the fluid–solid–ice coupling mechanism as structures break through ice into water. Using LS–DYNA finite element software, a numerical simulation method is established, based on the ALE flow–solid coupling method, and the penalty function contact algorithm, which describes the structure–ice–water coupling interaction. The Eulerian algorithm is used to describe the air and water domains, while the Lagrange method is applied to the wedge and ice structure. The mechanical properties of ice are characterized using the elastic–plastic failure strain model. The feasibility of simulating the entry of structures into water via the ALE method is demonstrated by comparing the experimental and simulation results of wedges entering into water. The applicability of the ice material model in simulating collision–induced breakup is verified by comparing a simulation of a rigid plate hitting a spherical head of ice, with results from the ISO standard. The effects of water during icebreaking are assessed by simulating a wedge breaking through ice into water, as well as through ice without water. Additionally, the ice breakup and motion response of the wedge under different working conditions are compared by varying the wedge mass and icebreaking speed.

Quantifying extracellular and intracellular contributions to Cr(VI) reduction is crucial for understanding bacterial Cr(VI)-reduction mechanisms. However, this contribution under different oxygen conditions remains largely unexplored. This study quantified the extracellular/intracellular contribution to aerobic and anaerobic Cr(VI) reduction using Pseudomonas sp. HGB10, an isolated Cr(VI)-reducing bacterium, as the experimental model. Interestingly, it was found that the lower anaerobic minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) does not necessarily imply a lower anaerobic Cr(VI)-reduction rate for HGB10. For the initial Cr(VI) concentration of 20 mg L−1, the maximum anaerobic Cr(VI)-reducing rate reached 100%, while the aerobic counterpart was only 75%, even though the value of the aerobic MIC (400 mg L−1) is twice that of the anaerobic (200 mg L−1). Additionally, the calculated extracellular contributions to aerobic and anaerobic Cr(VI) reduction were 10.76% and 55.71%, respectively, while the intracellular contributions were 68.29% and 40.38%. The sum of extracellular and intracellular contributions to Cr(VI) reduction (79.05% and 96.09%) under aerobic and anaerobic conditions was nearly balanced with the corresponding maximum values despite minor relative errors. These results indicated that anaerobic Cr(VI) reduction mainly occurred extracellularly rather than intracellularly, which differs from the existing result. Overall, our findings provide new insights into bacterial Cr(VI) reduction.

The consequences of climate change along with diverse food regulations and agricultural practices worldwide are complexifying the occurrence and management of chemical contaminants in food. In this context, we present an ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) approach for the simultaneous identification and quantitation of over 1100 pesticide residues, mycotoxins, and plant toxins in cereals and fruits and vegetables. Analytical conditions were optimized to maximize the scope of the targeted molecules, the reliability of compound identification, and quantification performance within a single method. The method was further transferred and validated in another laboratory to assess its ruggedness. Validation according to the SANTE 11312/2021v2 guidelines showed that 92% and 98% of the molecules fulfill the quantification criteria at the lowest validated level in the cereals and fruits and vegetables groups, respectively. Analysis of fifteen certified reference materials led to a 96% satisfactory rate of z-scores confirming method’s competitiveness. Furthermore, the occurrence of these contaminants was studied in 205 cereals and grains samples collected worldwide. The low µg/kg quantification limits make this LC-HRMS method a valuable tool to ensure compliance toward regulations and to screen for non-regulated substances for which occurrence data are crucial for an appropriate risk evaluation.

Cuticular wax mixtures cover the epidermis of land plants and shield plant tissues from abiotic and biotic stresses. Although cuticular wax-associated traits are employed to improve the production of bread wheat, regulatory mechanisms underlying wheat cuticular wax biosynthesis remain poorly understood. In this research, partially redundant transcription factors TaMYB60-1 and TaMYB60-2 were identified as positive regulators of wheat cuticular wax biosynthesis. Knock-down of wheat TaMYB60-1 and TaMYB60-2 genes by virus-induced gene silencing resulted in attenuated wax accumulation and enhanced cuticle permeability. The roles of wheat fatty acyl-ACP thioesterase genes TaFATB1 and TaFATB2 in cuticular wax biosynthesis were characterized. Silencing wheat TaFATB1 and TaFATB2 genes led to reduced wax accumulation and increased cuticle permeability, suggesting that TaFATB1 and TaFATB2 genes positively contribute to wheat cuticular wax biosynthesis. Importantly, transcription factors TaMYB60-1 and TaMYB60-2 exhibit transcriptional activation ability and could stimulate the expression of wax biosynthesis genes TaFATB1, TaFATB2, and ECERIFERUM 1 (TaCER1). These findings support that transcription factor TaMYB60 positively regulates wheat cuticular wax biosynthesis probably by activating transcription of TaFATB1, TaFATB2, and TaCER1 genes.
