The pressure dependence of the residual resistivity of the doped electron-type and hole-type Kondo insulators (KIs) are calculated within the framework of the slave-boson mean-field theory and the coherent potential approximation. It is shown that as the pressure increases, the resistivity increases and decreases for the dilute doping electron-type and hole-type KIs, respectively. These results are qualitatively in agreement with the experiments.

A novel method to fractionate phage into its subtypes while fully retaining biological function is reported. Corynebacterium pekinense AS 1.299 phage samples, purified by either conventional ultracentrifugation or gel chromatography on a Superose(R) 6 Prep column (0.78 x 30 cm), were fractionated further into four fractions by anion-exchange chromatography on a Toyopearl SuperQ 650C column (0.5 x 20 cm) with a linear gradient of NaCl concentration from 0.2 to 1.0 M in 0.02 M carbonate-biocarbonate buffer, pH 10.0. Two peaks were identified to be C. pekinense AS 1.299 phages by their ability to infect the host bacteria when inoculated into the culture media, and when examined by electron microscopy. These two types of the phage were found to be morphologically the same except for the difference in the length of their non-contractile tails. Both possessed an isometric head with a diameter of 50 +/- 3 nm, while their tails were 170 +/- 10 and 210 +/- 10 nm, respectively. This simple technique provides a convenient method for phage isolation not only to its species homogeneity, but also to determine its subtype or variant homogeneity.

The effects of pressure on the doped Kondo insulators (KI) are studied in theframework of the slave-boson mean-field theory under the coherent potential approximation.A unified picture for both the electron-type KI and hole-type KI is presented. The density ofstates of the -electrons under the applied pressures and its variation with the concentrationof the Kondo holes are calculated selficonsistently. The specific heat coefficient, the zerotemperaturemagnetic susceptibility as well as the low-temperature electric resistivity of thedoped KI under various pressures are obtained. The two contrasting pressure-dependent effectsobserved in the doped KI systems can be.naturdy explained within a microscopic model.

We simulate a relaxation process of a polaron in polymer after photo excitation, and a new state is realized by means of proper excitation. The original lattice configuration of the polaron splits into two symmetrical peaks, and consequently a double-well potential is formed, where the wavefunctions of electron localized in these two wells are entangled. Thus, this process provides a method to generate the Schr?dinger cat state. According to the dynamical process of the lattice configuration, the relaxation time of splitting is about 150?fs.

Eutectic solidification is very important for exploring new materials in which the periodic multiphase structures may have a remarkable or enhanced functionality. An asymptotic solution of the solute diffusion equation with flow terms for the rod eutectic in the weak convective melt in directional solidification is obtained by using the asymptotic method, and the effect of weak convection on the rod eutectic growth is studied. The so-called weak convection is defined in this paper as the condition in which the intensity of convection flow ahead of the solid liquid interface is relatively small. The relationships between the intensity of convection flow, the growth velocity, the rod spacing and the average interface undercooling can be derived. The result shows that the weak convection has a significant effect on the rod eutectic growth in directional solidification. The average interface undercooling is related to not only the rod spacing and the growth velocity, but also the intensity of convection flow. When specifically focusing on the effect of the intensity of convection flow on the average undercooling in directional solidification, the growth velocity is kept the same. For a certain growth velocity, the average interface undercooling of the rod eutectic decreases as the intensity of convection flow increases, especially at low growth velocity. The rod spacing, which is formed by solidified melt of eutectic or near-eutectic composition, plays a very important role in determining the properties of final products. In this study, by minimizing the average interface undercooling it is found that the rod spacing is a function of growth velocity and the intensity of convection flow. It is shown that for the small growth velocity, the rod spacing increases as the intensity of convection flow increases; for the large growth velocity, the rod spacing increases very slowly as the intensity of convection flow increases. In other words, the smaller the growth velocity, the greater the effect of the weak convection flow on the rod spacing. Our analytical result is compared with the results from other models, and it is also used to calculate the practical case such as the rod spacing of the typical eutectic alloy, Al-Cu eutectic, under the condition of weak forced convection induced by the accelerated crucible rotation technique. It is shown that the rod spacing increases as the rotation rate or the radial position increases, which is consistent with the experimental results obtained by Junze et al.

Self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots covered by the 1-nm InxAl(1-x)As (x = 0.2,0.3) and 3-nm In0.2Ga0.8As combination strain-reducing layer are fabricated, whose height can take up to 30-46 nm. The luminescence emission at a long-wavelength of 1.33 mum and the energy separation between the ground and the first-excited state of 86 meV are observed at room temperature. Furthermore, comparative study proves that the energy separation can increase to 91 meV by multiple stacking.

In the framework of the weak coupling theory of superconductivity, we have proved that spin and charge fluctuations in the high-Tc superconductors can produce respectively, pair-breaking and pair-forming effects on the superconductivity resulting from the "generalized BCS mechanism". With the coupling constant for spin fluctuations larger than that for charge fluctuations, they combine to produce a temperature-dependent effective pair-breaking effect, which makes Tc decrease more rapidly than Δ(0), the superconducting gap at T = 0, and therefore, enhances the ratio 2Δ(0)/Tc. This provides a reasonable physical interpretation for the relevant experimental results.

The growth behavior of a columnar crystal in the convective undercooled melt affected by the far-field uniform flow is studied and the asymptotic solution for the interface evolution of the columnar crystal is derived by means of the asymptotic expansion method. The results obtained reveal that the far-field flow induces a significant change of the temperature around the columnar crystal and the convective flow caused by the far-field flow accelerates the growth velocity of the interface of the growing columnar crystal in the upstream direction and inhibits its growth velocity in the downstream direction. Our results are similar to the experimental data and numerical simulations.
