Bicycling is a popular activity and a healthy, environmentally friendly form of transportation. However, it is also a leading cause of sport and recreational injury in children and adolescents. Head injuries are among the most severe injuries sustained while bicycling, justifying the implementation of bicycle helmet legislation by many provinces. There is evidence that bicycle helmet legislation increases helmet use and reduces head injury risk. Evidence for unintended consequences of helmet legislation, such as reduced bicycling and greater risk-taking, is weak and conflicting. Both research evidence to date and recognition of the substantial impact of traumatic brain injuries support the recommendation for all-ages bicycle helmet legislation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Burnout, anxiety, and depression continue to affect physicians, postgraduate medical trainees, and medical students globally and in Canada particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic., Objective: The primary goal of this project is to design, implement, monitor, and evaluate a daily supportive SMS text messaging program (Wellness4MDs, Global Psychological e-Health Foundation). The program aims to reduce the prevalence and severity of burnout, anxiety, and depression symptoms among physicians, postgraduate medical trainees, and medical students in Canada., Methods: This longitudinal study represents a multistakeholder, mixed methods, multiyear implementation science project. Project evaluation will be conducted through a quantitative prospective longitudinal approach using a paired sample comparison, a naturalistic cross-sectional controlled design, and satisfaction surveys. Prevalence estimates for psychological problems would be based on baseline data from self-completed validated rating scales. Additional data will be collected at designated time points for paired comparison. Outcome measures will be assessed using standardized rating scales, including the Maslach Burnout Inventory for burnout symptoms, the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire for depression symptoms, the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale for anxiety symptoms, and the World Health Organization-Five Well-Being Index., Results: The project launched in the last quarter of 2023, and program evaluation results will become available within 36 months. The Wellness4MDs program is expected to reduce the prevalence and severity of psychological problems among physicians in Canada and achieve high subscriber satisfaction., Conclusions: The results from the Wellness4MDs project evaluation will provide key information regarding the effectiveness of daily supportive SMS text messages and links to mental health resources on these mental health parameters in Canadian physicians, postgraduate trainees, and medical students. Clinical practice should be driven by high-quality research that produces evidence to inform best practices. Generation of such evidence is often challenging, particularly for smaller specialties, such as pediatric surgery, that treat many patients with rare diseases. Multi-institutional collaboration is seen as a major strategy to address these challenges. We have recently created the Canadian Consortium for Research in Pediatric Surgery, a national consortium that includes all major pediatric surgical services across Canada. The mission of the Consortium is to improve pediatric surgical care through high-quality collaborative research. In this article, we describe the rationale and methodology for creation of the Canadian Consortium for Research in Pediatric Surgery, demonstrate its achievements to date, and share a number of foundational concepts that are integral to its success. Background: Routinely gathered injury data, such as hospitalisations, may be subject to variation from sources other than injury incidence. There is a need for an indicator that defines severe injury, which may be less vulnerable to fluctuations due to changes in care policies. The purpose of this study was to identify International Classification of Diseases-10 codes associated with severe paediatric injuries and to specify and validate a severe paediatric injury indicator., Methods: Two data sets that included the ISS and the survival risk ratio were used to produce a list of diagnoses to define severe paediatric injury. The list was sent to trauma surgeons who classified each code as severe enough or not severe enough to require care in a trauma centre. The indicator was fully specified, then validated by using a different data set to validate the codes in a real-world situation., Results: Sixty diagnoses were identified as representing severe paediatric injury. Following specification, the indicator was applied to an existing comprehensive data set of paediatric injuries. The decline in hospitalisation of paediatric injuries was significantly steeper for severe than non-severe injuries, suggesting that factors related to the decline in this trauma subset are unlikely to be related to changes in access or other components of trauma care delivery., Conclusions: This indicator can be used for the evaluation of trends in severe paediatric trauma and will help identify populations at risk.
