Although many photothermal agents have been loaded with chemotherapeutic drugs for chemo-photothermal therapy, their applications are limited by complex synthetic protocols and long-term safety. Therefore, there is significant clinical value in the development of a simple system of biocompatible and biodegradable photothermal nanomaterials with high payloads of chemotherapeutic drugs for chemo-photothermal synergistic therapy.Materials and methods: In this study, PEG-modified polydopamine nanoparticles with mesoporous structure (MPDA-PEG) were successfully obtained by an emulsion-induced interface assembly strategy. Subsequently, paclitaxel (PTX) dissolved in acetone was loaded into the mesoporous channels of MPDA-PEG nanoparticles by solution absorption method. A PTX-loaded MPDA-PEG (MPDA-PEG-PTX) nanoplatform for combination of photothermal therapy (PTT) and chemotherapy was developed.Results: The synthesized MPDA-PEG nanoparticles had a great photothermal effect under near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation and exhibited an enhanced photothermal effect with the increase of particle size. Meanwhile, MPDA-PEG nanoparticles also had a high payload of PTX, and the PTX release could be greatly accelerated by elevated temperature from photothermal effect. In MTT cytotoxicity assay, A549 cells incubated with MPDA-PEG-PTX under NIR laser irradiation (PTT + chemotherapy group) exhibited better therapeutic effect than single chemotherapy (MPDA-PEG-PTX group) and PTT (MPDA-PEG + Laser group). The synergistic therapeutic effect of MPDA-PEG-PTX with NIR laser irradiation in vivo was further investigated under the guidance of photoacoustic imaging (PAI), tumors of nude mice treated with MPDA-PEG-PTX with NIR laser irradiation were completely eliminated with minimal side effect.Conclusion: The MPDA-PEG-PTX nanoplatform is a simple and effective platform which can completely inhibit tumor growth with minimal side effects under NIR irradiation, and it exhibits better therapeutic effect than single chemotherapy and PTT.Keywords: photothermal therapy, polydopamine, mesoporous nanoparticle, chemotherapy, paclitaxel

Abstract

Dielectric properties and microstructural evolution of A/B sites co-substituted BaBi4Ti4O15 Aurivillius-type ferroelectric are reported. The non-stoichiometric BaBi4−xTi4−xM′2xO15+δ (M′ = Cu2+, V5+) ceramics exhibits the normal dielectric permittivity (~ 102) and classical plate-like grains. As the potassium and bismuth cations are introduced, giant dielectric permittivity (~ 104) and abnormal growth of grain can be obtained in the non-stoichiometric Ba1−yMyBi3.91Ti3.91(Cu1/3V2/3)0.18O15+δ (M = K+, Bi3+) ceramics. Giant dielectric permittivity together with abnormal growth of grain are dependent significantly on the component of the ceramics. The bimodal grain size model is used to clarify the mechanism of the giant dielectric properties. These results are valuable for developing the applications of Aurivillius oxide in the high-temperature multilayer ceramic capacitor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

BaBi4Ti4−x(Cu0.5W0.5)xO15 ceramics with Cu2+ and W6+ co-substitution for the B-site Ti4+ were prepared by using the solid-state reaction process. It was desirable that piezoelectric properties of the BaBi4Ti4−x(Cu0.5W0.5)xO15 ceramics could be improved by inducing the larger lattice distortion with the oxygen vacancy defects neutralized and restrained. Results of the X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that crystal cell parameter c decreased obviously with the increase in the crystal cell parameter a. Curie temperature, resistivity, and piezoelectric properties of the BBT ceramics are improved by the copper and tungsten modification. The maximum value of piezoelectric coefficient (~ 30 pC/N) can be obtained in the BaBi4Ti4−x(Cu0.5W0.5)xO15 ceramics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

94. Stable Radical Cation-Containing Covalent Organic Frameworks Exhibiting Remarkable Structure-Enhanced Photothermal Conversion

Abstract

The production of a radical cation-containing covalent organic framework (COF) has been accomplished by sequential in situ reactions, quaternization, and one-electron reduction of the 2,2′-bipyridine-based COFs. The acid-catalyzed COF formation enables the cis configuration of 2,2′-bipyridyl moieties in the structure, of which the stability arises from the eclipsed stacking of the two-dimensional layered structure. The postfunctionalization generates cyclic alkylated diquats as the sole products from the controlled quaternization. The reduction of diquat cations on the COF skeletons results in a large number of radical cations, which delocalize and uniaxially stack on top of one another by virtue of interlayered π-electronic couplings. The absorption of the near-infrared (NIR) region exhibited by the cationic radical COF is remarkably high owing to the intercharge transfer across the π-coupling interlayers. Also, the long-range array of extended and planar frameworks in such a COF leads to the extra stability of the radical cations against external stresses. The structure-enhanced performance of the COF material is witnessed with photothermal conversion efficiencies of as high as 63.8 and 55.2% when exposed to 808 and 1064 nm lasers, respectively. Further PEG modification on such a COF allows photoacoustic imaging and photothermal therapy in vivo under NIR light illumination to be manifested.
