We investigate the role of heterojunctions of few-layer black phosphorus (BP) with band gap inversion in governing the quantum transport behaviors. Numerical results show that in the armchair junction, electron tunneling probability occurs under approximately normal incidence with its magnitude T > 0.5. More interestingly, when different band gaps are taken into account on two sides of this junction, the maximum transmission appears away from the center of the valley, leading to the occurrence of anomalous Klein tunneling. Such a result tends to be independent of the width and height of the potential barrier. On the other hand, in the zigzag junction, electron transmission arises in a larger range of angles, and perfect electron transmission ( T = 1.0) or reflection appears under specific band gap configurations. These findings provide a new understanding for the study of Klein tunneling and anomalous Klein tunneling based on tunable band gap BP or other two-dimensional Dirac semimetals.

Bicyclic hydantoinothiolactone (1), as the key intermediate for production of (+)-biotin, has been efficiently and high-stereoselectively synthesized from the cheap starting material l-cystine via nine steps in 44% overall yield. In this new practical synthesis, there are two characteristic steps worthy of note. One step is TMSOTf-catalyzed efficient cyanation of (3 S ,7a R )-6-benzyl-5-oxo-3-phenyltetrahydro-1 H ,3 H -imidazo[1,5- c ]thiazol-7-yl acetate, the other step is DBU-catalyzed rapid isomerization of trans -isomer to cis -isomer of the bicyclic hydantoinothiolactone., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, motile, ovoid-shaped and yellow-coloured strain, designated SYSU M79828 T , was isolated from seawater collected from the South China Sea. Growth of this strain was observed at 4-37 °C (optimum, 28 °C), pH 6.0-8.0 (optimum, pH 7.0) and with 0-6% NaCl (optimum, 3.0 %, w/v). The respiratory quinone was found to be Q-10. Major fatty acid constituents were C 18 : 1  ω 7 c /C 18 : 1  ω 6 c , C 18 : 1 ω 7 c 11-methyl and C 18 : 0 (>5 % of total). The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphoglycolipid, two unidentified phospholipid, one unidentified lipid and an unidentified glycolipid. The genomic DNA G+C content was 64.5 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and core genes indicated that strain SYSU M79828 T belonged to the genus Cereibacter and had the highest sequences similarity to ' Rhodobacter xinxiangensis ' TJ48 T (98.41 %). Based on 16S rRNA gene phylogeny, physiological and chemotaxonomic characterizations, we consider that strain SYSU M79828 T represents a novel species of the genus Cereibacter , for which the name Cereibacter flavus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SYSU M79828 T (=GDMCC 1.3803 T =KCTC 92893 T ). In addition, according to the results of phylogenetic analysis and similar taxonomic characteristics, we propose that Rhodobacter alkalitolerans should be reclassified as Cereibacter alkalitolerans comb. nov.

Introduction: Mechanical neck pain (MNP) is defined as pain in the area of the neck and/or neck-shoulder provoked by body mechanics and which adversely affects physical, psychological and social function. The treatments for MNP are limited. Previous studies and clinical experience have indicated that myofascial acupuncture might be a better treatment option for MNP, but the efficacy is controversial. Therefore, our aim is to compare the efficacy of myofascial acupuncture and routine acupuncture for MNP., Methods and Analysis: The study is a multicentre, prospective randomised clinical trial. Patients will be recruited from four tertiary hospitals in China. A total of 438 participants with MNP will be randomly assigned into two groups, namely the 'Sancai-Tianbu' myofascial acupuncture group and the routine acupuncture group, at a ratio of 1:1. Each group will receive the acupuncture treatment twice a week for 21 days, totalling six sessions. The primary outcome will be the Visual Analogue Scale score. The secondary outcomes will be the Neck Disability Index, the cervical range of motion and the MOS 36-Item Short Form Health Survey. The assessments will be performed at baseline (immediately after allocation), pretreatment (5 min before every treatment), post-treatment (within 10 min after every treatment), postcourse (within 1 day after the course), and at 1, 3 and 6 months after the course. All patients will be included in the intent-to-treat analysis. Objectives: To investigate the value of CCKBR fl/fl villin-Cre mice as a mouse model of salt-sensitive hypertension (SSH)., Methods: In the first part, 2-month-old CCKBR fl/fl villin-Cre mice (CKO) and control CCKBR fl/fl mice (WT) were fed with normal diet (0.4% NaCl) or high salt diet (4% NaCl), separately for 6 weeks. In the rescue study, one week of hydrochlorothiazide or saline injection were treated with the CKO mice fed high salt diet. The blood pressure, biochemical indexes, and the expression of small intestinal sodium transporters (NHE3, NKCC1, eNaC) was detected. The organ injury markers (MMP2/MMP9) and the histopathological changes of kidneys were observed, whereas the changes of duodenal sodium absorption were detected by small intestinal perfusion in vivo., Results: The CCKBR fl/fl villin-Cre mice with high salt intake exhibited high blood pressure, increased duodenal sodium absorption and urinary sodium excretion, and with renal injury. The protein expression of NHE3, NKCC1 and eNaC were also significant increase in the intestine of CKO-HS mice. Treatment with hydrochlorothiazide remarkably attenuated the elevated blood pressure by high salt absorption in the CCKBR fl/fl villin-Cre mice, but no significant histopathological changes were observed., Conclusions: These results support a crucial role of intestinal Cckbr deficiency on SSH development and the diuretic antihypertension effect in CCKBR fl/fl villin-Cre mice. Purpose: Traditional cutoff values of urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) for predicting mortality have recently been challenged. In this study, we investigated the optimal threshold of UACR for predicting long-term cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular mortality in the general population., Methods: Data for 25,302 adults were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005-2014). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was performed to assess the predictive value of UACR for cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular mortality. A Cox regression model was established to examine the association between UACR and cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular mortality. X-tile was used to estimate the optimal cutoff of UACR., Results: The UACR had acceptable predictive value for both cardiovascular (AUC (95% CI) for 1-year, 3-year and 5-year mortality, respectively: 0.769 (0.711-0.828), 0.764 (0.722-0.805) and 0.763 (0.730-0.795)) and non-cardiovascular (AUC (95% CI) for 1-year, 3-year and 5-year mortality, respectively: 0.772 (0.681-0.764), 0.708 (0.686-0.731) and 0.708 (0.690-0.725)) mortality. The optimal cutoff values were 16 and 30 mg/g for predicting long-term cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular mortality, respectively. Both cutoffs of UACR had acceptable specificity (0.785-0.891) in predicting long-term mortality, while the new proposed cutoff (16 mg/g) had higher sensitivity. The adjusted hazard ratios of cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular mortality for the high-risk group were 2.50 (95% CI 1.96-3.18, P < 0.001) and 1.92 (95% CI 1.70-2.17, P < 0.001), respectively., Conclusions: Compared to the traditional cutoff value (30 mg/g), a UACR cutoff of 16 mg/g may be more sensitive for identifying patients at high risk for cardiovascular mortality in the general population., (© 2023. Using (1.0087±0.0044)×10^{10}  J/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring, the process Ξ^{0}n→Ξ^{-}p is studied, where the Ξ^{0} baryon is produced in the process J/ψ→Ξ^{0}Ξ[over ¯]^{0} and the neutron is a component of the ^{9}Be, ^{12}C, and ^{197}Au nuclei in the beam pipe. A clear signal is observed with a statistical significance of 7.1σ. The cross section of the reaction Ξ^{0}+^{9}Be→Ξ^{-}+p+^{8}Be is determined to be σ(Ξ^{0}+^{9}Be→Ξ^{-}+p+^{8}Be)=(22.1±5.3&#95;{stat}±4.5&#95;{sys})  mb at the Ξ^{0} momentum of 0.818  GeV/c, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. No significant H-dibaryon signal is observed in the Ξ^{-}p final state. This is the first study of hyperon-nucleon interactions in electron-positron collisions and opens up a new direction for such research.

The assessment of factors that can promote the transmission of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) across bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract is in great demand to understand the occurrence of infections related to antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) in humans. However, whether acid-resistant enteric bacteria can promote ARG transmission in gastric fluid under high-pH conditions remains unknown. This study assessed the effects of simulated gastric fluid (SGF) at different pH levels on the RP4 plasmid-mediated conjugative transfer of ARGs. Moreover, transcriptomic analysis, measurement of reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, assessment of cell membrane permeability, and real-time quantitative assessment of the expression of key genes were performed to identify the underlying mechanisms. The frequency of conjugative transfer was the highest in SGF at pH 4.5. Antidepressant consumption and certain dietary factors further negatively impacted this situation, with 5.66-fold and 4.26-fold increases in the conjugative transfer frequency being noted upon the addition of sertraline and 10% glucose, respectively, compared with that in the control group without any additives. The induction of ROS generation, the activation of cellular antioxidant systems, increases in cell membrane permeability, and the promotion of adhesive pilus formation were factors potentially contributing to the increased transfer frequency. These findings indicate that conjugative transfer could be enhanced under certain circumstances in SGF at elevated pH levels, thereby facilitating ARG transmission in the gastrointestinal tract. IMPORTANCE The low pH of gastric acid kills unwanted microorganisms, in turn affecting their inhabitation in the intestine. Hence, studies on the factors that influence antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) propagation in the gastrointestinal tract and on the underlying mechanisms are limited. In this study, we constructed a conjugative transfer model in the presence of simulated gastric fluid (SGF) and found that SGF could promote the dissemination of ARGs under high-pH conditions. Furthermore, antidepressant consumption and certain dietary factors could negatively impact this situation. Transcriptomic analysis and a reactive oxygen species assay revealed the overproduction of reactive oxygen species as a potential mechanism by which SGF could promote conjugative transfer. This finding can help provide a comprehensive understanding of the bloom of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the body and create awareness regarding the risk of ARG transmission due to certain diseases or an improper diet and the subsequent decrease in gastric acid levels., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

The great majority of microorganisms are as-yet-uncultivated, mostly found in extreme environments. High-throughput sequencing provides data-rich genomes from single-cell and metagenomic techniques, which has enabled researchers to obtain a glimpse of the unexpected genetic diversity of "microbial dark matter." However, cultivating microorganisms from extreme environments remains essential for dissecting and utilizing the functions of extremophiles. Here, we provide a straightforward protocol for efficiently isolating prokaryotic microorganisms from different extreme habitats (thermal, xeric, saline, alkaline, acidic, and cryogenic environments), which was established through previous successful work and our long-term experience in extremophile resource mining. We propose common processes for extremophile isolation at first and then summarize multiple cultivation strategies for recovering prokaryotic microorganisms from extreme environments and meanwhile provide specific isolation tips that are always overlooked but important. Furthermore, we propose the use of multi-omics-guided microbial cultivation approaches for culturing these as-yet-uncultivated microorganisms and two examples are provided to introduce how these approaches work. Objective: Adipose tissue remodeling is a dynamic process that is pathologically expedited in the obese state and is closely related to obesity-associated disease progression. This study aimed to explore the effects of human kallistatin (HKS) on adipose tissue remodeling and obesity-related metabolic disorders in mice fed with a high-fat diet (HFD)., Methods: Adenovirus-mediated HKS cDNA (Ad.HKS) and a blank adenovirus (Ad.Null) were constructed and injected into the epididymal white adipose tissue (eWAT) of 8-weeks-old male C57B/L mice. The mice were fed normal or HFD for 28 days. The body weight and circulating lipids levels were assessed. Intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test (IGTT) and insulin tolerance test (ITT) were also performed. Oil-red O staining was used to assess the extent of lipid deposition in the liver. Immunohistochemistry and HE staining were used to measure HKS expression, adipose tissue morphology, and macrophage infiltration. Western blot and qRT-PCR were used to evaluate the expression of adipose function-related factors., Results: At the end of the experiment, the expression of HKS in the serum and eWAT of the Ad.HKS group was higher than in the Ad.Null group. Furthermore, Ad.HKS mice had lower body weight and decreased serum and liver lipid levels after four weeks of HFD feeding. IGTT and ITT showed that HKS treatment maintained balanced glucose homeostasis. Additionally, inguinal white adipose tissue (iWAT) and eWAT in Ad.HKS mice had a higher number of smaller-size adipocytes and had less macrophage infiltration than Ad.Null group. HKS significantly increased the mRNA levels of adiponectin, vaspin, and eNOS. In contrast, HKS decreased RBP4 and TNFα levels in the adipose tissues. Western blot results showed that local injection of HKS significantly upregulated the protein expressions of SIRT1, p-AMPK, IRS1, p-AKT, and GLUT4 in eWAT., Conclusions: HKS injection in eWAT improves HFD-induced adipose tissue remodeling and function, thus significantly improving weight gain and dysregulation of glucose and lipid homeostasis in mice., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest The authors declare that they have no competing interests., (Copyright © 2023 Elsevier Inc. Using (10 087±44)×10^{6} J/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector, the radiative hyperon decay Σ^{+}→pγ is studied at an electron-positron collider experiment for the first time. The absolute branching fraction is measured to be (0.996±0.021&#95;{stat}±0.018&#95;{syst})×10^{-3}, which is lower than its world average value by 4.2 standard deviations. Its decay asymmetry parameter is determined to be -0.652±0.056&#95;{stat}±0.020&#95;{syst}. The branching fraction and decay asymmetry parameter are the most precise to date, and the accuracies are improved by 78% and 34%, respectively.

The high-valent cobalt-oxo species (Co(IV)=O) is being increasingly investigated for water purification because of its high redox potential, long half-life, and antiinterference properties. However, generation of Co(IV)=O is inefficient and unsustainable. Here, a cobalt-single-atom catalyst with N/O dual coordination was synthesized by O-doping engineering. The O-doped catalyst (Co-OCN) greatly activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and achieved a pollutant degradation kinetic constant of 73.12 min -1  g -2 , which was 4.9 times higher than that of Co-CN (catalyst without O-doping) and higher than those of most reported single-atom catalytic PMS systems. Co-OCN/PMS realized Co(IV)=O dominant oxidation of pollutants by increasing the steady-state concentration of Co(IV)=O (1.03 × 10 -10  M) by 5.9 times compared with Co-CN/PMS. A competitive kinetics calculation showed that the oxidation contribution of Co(IV)=O to micropollutant degradation was 97.5% during the Co-OCN/PMS process. Density functional theory calculations showed that O-doping influenced the charge density (increased the Bader charge transfer from 0.68 to 0.85 e), optimized the electron distribution of the Co center (increased the d-band center from -1.14 to -1.06 eV), enhanced the PMS adsorption energy from -2.46 to -3.03 eV, and lowered the energy barrier for generation of the key reaction intermediate (*O*H 2 O) during Co(IV)=O formation from 1.12 to 0.98 eV. The Co-OCN catalyst was fabricated on carbon felt for a flow-through device, which achieved continuous and efficient removal of micropollutants (degradation efficiency of >85% after 36 h operation). This study provides a new protocol for PMS activation and pollutant elimination through single-atom catalyst heteroatom-doping and high-valent metal-oxo formation during water purification.

Searching for working refrigerant materials is the key element in the design of magnetic cooling devices. Herein, we report on the thermodynamic and magnetocaloric parameters of an X 1 phase oxyorthosilicate, Gd 2 SiO 5 , by field-dependent static magnetization and specific heat measurements. An overall correlation strength of | J | S 2 ≈ 3.4 K is derived via the mean-field estimate, with antiferromagnetic correlations between the ferromagnetically coupled Gd-Gd layers. The magnetic entropy change -Δ S m is quite impressive, reaches 0.40 J K -1 cm -3 (58.5 J K -1 kg -1 ) at T = 2.7 K, with the largest adiabatic temperature change T ad = 23.2 K for a field change of 8.9 T. At T = 20 K, the lattice entropy S L is small enough compared to the magnetic entropy S m , S m / S L = 21.3, which warrants its potential in 2 -20 K cryocoolers with both the Stirling and Carnot cycles. Though with relatively large exchange interactions, the layered A-type spin arrangement ultimately enhances the magnetocaloric coupling, raising the possibilities of designing magnetic refrigerants with a high ratio of cooling capacity to volume.

A Gram-staining-positive, aerobic, motile, and rod-shaped strain, designated SYSU M60031 T , was isolated from a Pearl River Estuary sediment sample, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China. The isolate could grow at pH 5.0-8.0 (optimum, pH 7.0), 25-37 °C (optimum, 28 °C) and in the presence of 0-1 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0 %). The predominant respiratory menaquinone of SYSU M60031 T was MK-7. The cellular polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, one unidentified aminophospholipid, and one unidentified aminolipid. The major fatty acids (>10 % of total) were iso-C 14 : 0 , iso-C 15 : 0 , anteiso-C 15 : 0 , iso-C 16 : 0 , and C 16 : 0 . The genomic DNA G+C content was 51.2 %. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and core genes indicated that strain SYSU M60031 T belonged to the genus Ectobacillus and showed the highest sequence similarity to Ectobacillus funiculus NAF001 T (96.16%), followed by Ectobacillus antri SYSU K30001 T (95.08 %). Based on the phenotypic, genotypic, and phylogenetic data, strain SYSU M60031 T should be considered to represent a novel species of the genus Ectobacillus , for which the name Ectobacillus ponti sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the proposed novel isolate is SYSU M60031 T (=CGMCC 1.19243 T =NBRC 115614 T ).

Background: Macrophages release large numbers of proinflammatory cytokines that trigger inflammatory cascade reactions, which promote the rapid development of severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) from local to systemic inflammation. The ability of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to suppress inflammation is related to inhibition of M1 polarization of macrophages. Our previous studies revealed that caspase recruitment domain protein 9 (CARD9) was involved in SAP inflammation and activation of the CARD9-NF-κB signaling pathway plays an important proinflammatory role in SAP. At present, there is no effective treatment to control the inflammatory response in SAP. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to determine whether MSCs regulate the polarization of macrophages through the CARD9-NF-κB signaling pathway in SAP., Methods: Short hairpin RNA interference technology and coculture in vitro were used to assess the activation status of the CARD9-NF-κB signal pathway in macrophages. Furthermore, flow cytometry was used to determine the polarization state of macrophages., Results: The results showed MSCs inhibited CARD9 expression in vivo and in vitro (P < .05), alleviated inflammation induced by proinflammatory cytokines, and inhibited the phosphorylation of NF-κB in macrophages both in vivo and in vitro. Meanwhile, MSCs downregulated the CARD9-NF-κB signal pathway and inhibited M1 polarization of macrophages., Conclusion: In conclusion, MSCs regulate M1 polarization of peritoneal macrophages through the CARD9-NF-κB signaling pathway in SAP and transplantation of MSCs presents an effective treatment option for SAP., (© 2022 The Authors. There has been an important change in the clinical characteristics and immune profile of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients during the pandemic thanks to the extensive vaccination programs. Here, we highlight recent studies on COVID-19, from the clinical and immunological characteristics to the protective and risk factors for severity and mortality of COVID-19. The efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccines and potential allergic reactions after administration are also discussed. The occurrence of new variants of concerns such as Omicron BA.2, BA.4, and BA.5 and the global administration of COVID-19 vaccines have changed the clinical scenario of COVID-19. Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) may cause severe and heterogeneous disease but with a lower mortality rate. Perturbations in immunity of T cells, B cells, and mast cells, as well as autoantibodies and metabolic reprogramming may contribute to the long-term symptoms of COVID-19. There is conflicting evidence about whether atopic diseases, such as allergic asthma and rhinitis, are associated with a lower susceptibility and better outcomes of COVID-19. At the beginning of pandemic, the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) developed guidelines that provided timely information for the management of allergic diseases and preventive measures to reduce transmission in the allergic clinics. The global distribution of COVID-19 vaccines and emerging severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants with reduced pathogenic potential dramatically decreased the morbidity, severity, and mortality of COVID-19. Nevertheless, breakthrough infection remains a challenge for disease control. Hypersensitivity reactions (HSR) to COVID-19 vaccines are low compared to other vaccines, and these were addressed in EAACI statements that provided indications for the management of allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis to COVID-19 vaccines. We have gained a depth knowledge and experience in the over 2 years since the start of the pandemic, and yet a full eradication of SARS-CoV-2 is not on the horizon. Ferroptosis plays an important role in ischemia-reperfusion (I/R)-induced cardiac injury and there are many defects in current targeted delivery of miRNAs for the treatment of ferroptosis. We herein report a unique hydrogel (Gel) that can be triggered by a near-infrared-II (NIR-II) light with deep tissue penetration and biocompatible maximum permissible exposure (MPE) value for in situ treatment after I/R. The mir-196c-3p mimic (mimics) and photothermal nanoparticles (BTN) were co-encapsulated in an injectable Gel (mimics + Gel/BTN) with NIR-II light-triggered release. Using 1064 nm light irradiation, local microenvironment photothermal-triggered on-demand noninvasive controllable delivery of miRNA was achieved, aiming to inhibit I/R-induced ferroptosis. True bugs (Hemiptera, suborder Heteroptera) constitute the largest suborder of nonholometabolous insects and occupy a wide range of habitats various from terrestrial to semiaquatic to aquatic niches. The transition and occupation of these diverse habitats impose various challenges to true bugs, including access to oxygen for the aquatic species and plant defense for the terrestrial phytophagans. Although numerous studies have demonstrated that microorganisms can provide multiple benefits to terrestrial host insects, a systematic study with comprehensive higher taxa sampling that represents aquatic and semiaquatic habitats is still lacking. To explore the role of symbiotic microorganisms in true bug adaptations, 204 samples belonging to all seven infraorders of Heteroptera were investigated, representing approximately 85% of its superfamilies and almost all known habitats. The symbiotic microbial communities of these insects were analyzed based on the full-length amplicons of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene and fungal ITS region. Bacterial communities varied among hosts inhabiting terrestrial, semiaquatic, and aquatic habitats, while fungal communities were more related to the geographical distribution of the hosts. Interestingly, co-occurrence networks showed that species inhabiting similar habitats shared symbiotic microorganism association types. Moreover, functional prediction analyses showed that the symbiotic bacterial community of aquatic species displayed richer amino acid and lipid metabolism pathways, while plant-feeding true bugs benefited more from the symbiont-provided xenobiotics biodegradation pathway. These results deepened the recognition that symbiotic microorganisms were likely to help heteropterans occupy diverse ecological habitats and provided a reference framework for further studies on how microorganisms affect host insects living in various habitats. IMPORTANCE Symbiotic bacteria and fungi generally colonize insects and provide various benefits for hosts. Although numerous studies have investigated symbionts in terrestrial plant-feeding insects, explorations of symbiotic bacterial and fungal communities in aquatic and semiaquatic insects are rare. In this study, the symbiotic microorganisms of 204 aquatic, semiaquatic, and terrestrial true bugs were explored. This comprehensive taxon sampling covers ~85% of the superfamilies of true bugs and most insect habitats. Analyses of the diversity of symbionts demonstrated that the symbiotic microbial diversities of true bugs were mainly affected by host habitats. Co-occurrence networks showed that true bugs inhabiting similar habitats shared symbiotic microbial association types. These correlations between symbionts and hosts together with the functions of bacterial communities indicated that symbiotic microbial communities may help true bugs adapt to (semi)aquatic habitats.

Objective: To analyze the factors related to the need for revision surgery due to nonunion or internal fixation failure after the treatment of distal femoral fracture with lateral locking plate (LLP)., Methods: Retrospective analysis was made of the clinical data of 130 cases with distal femoral fracture treated in our hospital from March 2005 to March 2019. SPSS 17.0 software (univariate analysis and Logistic regression analysis) was used to analyze the general condition [gender, age, body mass index (BMI), comorbidities, smoking history], injury related factors (energy of injury, open or closed injury, AO/OTA classification of fracture, fracture area distribution), operation related factors (operation time, reduction quality, postoperative infection) and construct characteristics of internal fixation., Results: Twelve of 130 patients who were included in the study underwent revisional surgery, with a revision rate 9.2%. Univariate analysis showed that there were significant differences in age, BMI, AO/OTA classification, fracture area distribution, operation time, reduction quality, length of plate/fracture area, length of plate/fracture area above condylar between the two groups ( P < 0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that AO/OTA classification (A3), supracondylar involved fracture, operation time, reduction quality and the length of the plate/fracture area above the condylar were the possible related factors ( P < 0.05). Destruction of the medial support ability of the femur in comminuted type A3 fracture, supra-condylar cortex area fracture involvement, increase of the bending stress of the LLP due to poor fracture reduction quality, damage of the blood supply of fracture end due to long-time operation, and stress concentration caused by insufficient length of plate might be risk factors of revisional operation after the treatment of distal femoral fracture with LLP. For the patients who needed revision after LLP treatment, additional use of medial minimally invasive plate fixation and autologous bone transplantation, change to intramedullary nail fixation were commonly used clinical treatment strategies., Conclusion: AO/OTA classification (A3), supracondylar involved fracture, long operation time, poor reduction quality and the length of the plate/fracture area above the condylar were the possible predictive factors of the revision in distal femoral fractures treated with lateral locking plate. The appropriate application of the locking plate and operation strategy are the key to reduce the revision rate in distal femoral fractures.

Immobilizing cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) onto the electrode surface is a significant approach to performing efficient electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (ECO 2 RR). Herein, sulfylphenoxy decorated CoPc cross-linked polypyrrole is prepared by in situ polymerization on the surface of carbon cloth. The synthesized N-rich catalyst exhibits above 95 % Faradaic efficiency toward CO (FE CO ) at -0.9 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) at least for 10 h in aqueous solution and even enables direct electrolysis at low CO 2 concentrations, being potential for coupling ECO 2 RR with CO 2 capture. The electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction reaction (ECO 2 RR) is one promising method for storing intermittent clean energy in chemical bonds and producing fuels. Among various kinds of catalysts for ECO 2 RR, molecular metal complexes with well-defined structures are convenient for studies of their rational design, structure-reactivity relationships, and mechanisms. In this Review, we summarize the molecular engineering of several N-based metal complexes including Re/Mn bipyridine compounds and metal macrocycles, concluding with general modification strategies to devise novel molecular catalysts with high intrinsic activity. Through physical adsorption, covalent linking, and formation of a periodic backbone, these active molecules can be heterogenized into immobilized catalysts with more practical prospects. Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common malignant tumors worldwide. The identification of novel diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for CRC is a key research imperative. Immunohistochemical analysis has revealed high expression of centromere protein K (CENPK) in CRC. However, the role of CENPK in the progression of CRC is not well characterized., Aim: To evaluate the effects of knockdown of CENPK and overexpression of Cullin 4A (CUL4A) in RKO and HCT116 cells., Methods: Human colon cancer samples were collected and tested using a human gene expression chip. We identified CENPK as a potential oncogene for CRC based on bioinformatics analysis. In vitro experiments verified the function of this gene. We investigated the expression of CENPK in RKO and HCT116 cells using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), western blot, and flow cytometry. The effect of short hairpin RNA (shRNA) virus-infected RKO cells on tumor growth was evaluated in vivo using quantitative analysis of fluorescence imaging. To evaluate the effects of knockdown of CENPK and overexpression of CUL4A in RKO and HCT116 cells, we performed a series of in vitro experiments, using qPCR, western blot, MTT assay, and flow cytometry., Results: We demonstrated overexpression of CENPK in human colon cancer samples. CENPK was an independent risk factor in patients with CRC. The downstream genes FBX32, CUL4A, and Yes-associated protein isoform 1 were examined to evaluate the regulatory action of CENPK in RKO cells. Significantly delayed xenograft tumor emergence, slower growth rate, and lower final tumor weight and volume were observed in the CENPK short hairpin RNA virus infected group compared with the CENPK negative control group. The CENPK gene interference inhibited the proliferation of RKO cells in vitro and in vivo . The catalytic generation of H 2 in living cells provides a method for antioxidant therapy. In this study, an [FeFe]-hydrogenase mimic [Ru + Fe 2 S 2 @F127(80)] was synthesized by self-assembling polymeric pluronic F-127, catalytic [Fe 2 S 2 ] sites, and photosensitizer Ru(bpy) 3 2+ . Under blue light irradiation, hydrated protons were photochemically reduced to H 2 , which increased the local pH in living cells (HeLa cells). The generated H 2 was subsequently used as an antioxidant to decrease reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in living cells (HEK 293T, HepG2, MCF-7, and HeLa cells). Our findings revealed that the proliferation of HEK 293T cells increased by a factor of about six times, relative to that of other cells (HepG2, MCF-7, and HeLa cells). Intracellular ROS and pH levels were then monitored using fluorescent cell imaging. Our study showed that cell imaging can be used to evaluate the ability of Ru + Fe 2 S 2 @F127 to eliminate oxidative stress and prevent ROS-related diseases., (© 2022 The Authors.)

Viral waterborne diseases are widespread in cities due largely to the occurrence of enteric viruses in urban rivers, which pose a significant concern to human health. Yet, the application of rapid detection technology for enteric viruses in environmental water remains undeveloped globally. Here, multiple linear regression (MLR) modeling and artificial neural network (ANN) modeling, which used frequently measured physicochemical parameters in river water, were constructed to predict the concentration of enteric viruses including human enteroviruses (EnVs), rotaviruses (HRVs), astroviruses (AstVs), noroviruses GⅡ (HuNoVs GⅡ), and adenoviruses (HAdVs) in rivers. After training, testing, and validating, ANN models showed better performance than any MLR model for predicting the viral concentration in Jinhe River. All determined R-values for ANN models exceeded 0.89, suggesting a strong correlation between the predicted and measured outputs for target enteric viruses. Furthermore, ANN models provided a better congruence between the observed and predicted concentrations of each virus than MLR models did. Together, these findings strongly suggest that ANN modeling can provide more accurate and timely predictions of viral concentrations based on frequent (or routine) measurements of physicochemical parameters in river water, which would improve assessments of waterborne disease prevalence in cities., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier B.V. Background: Fibrotic remodeling is an essential aspect of heart failure. Human kallistatin (KS, mouse Serpina3c homologs) inhibits fibrosis after myocardial infarction (MI) but the specific underlying mechanism is unknown., Methods: A total of 40 heart failure patients (HFPs) were enrolled and their plasma KS was measured using ELISA. Serpina3c -/- and C57BL/6 mice were used to construct the MI model. TGF-β1 or a hypoxic condition was established to interfere with the functioning of cardiac fibroblasts (CFs). RNA-seq was performed to assess the effect of Serpina3c on the transcriptome., Findings: The levels of KS were used as a predictor of readmission among the HFPs. Serpina3c expression decreased in MI hearts and CFs. Serpina3c -/- led to the aggravation of MI fibrosis, and increased the proliferation of CFs. The overexpression of Serpina3c in CFs had the opposite effect. Glycolysis-related genes were significantly increased in Serpina3c -/- group by RNA-seq. Enolase (ENO1), which is a key enzyme in glycolysis, increased most significantly. Inhibition of ENO1 could antagonize the promotion of Serpina3c -/- on the proliferation of CFs. Co-IP was performed to verify the interaction between Serpina3c and Nr4a1. Serpina3c -/- inhibited the acetylation of Nr4a1 and increased the degradation of Nr4a1. Activation of Nr4a1 could negatively regulate the expression of ENO1 and inhibited the proliferation of Serpina3c -/- CFs in Serpina3c -/- MI mice., Interpretation: Serpina3c inhibits the transcriptional activation of ENO1 by regulating the acetylation of Nr4a1, thereby reducing the fibrosis after MI by inhibiting glycolysis. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the worldwide biocides application has been increased, which will eventually result in enhanced residuals in treated wastewater. At the same time, chlorine disinfection of secondary effluents and hospital wastewaters has been intensified. With respect to predicted elevated exposure in wastewater, the chlorination kinetics, transformation pathways and toxicity evolution were investigated in this study for two typical isothiazolinone biocides, methyl-isothiazolinone (MIT) and chloro-methyl-isothiazolinone (CMIT). Second-order rate constants of 0.13 M -1 ·s -1 , 1.95 × 10 5 M -1 ·s -1 and 5.14 × 10 5 M -1 ·s -1 were determined for the reaction of MIT with HOCl, Cl 2 O and Cl 2 , respectively, while reactivity of CMIT was around 1-2 orders of magnitude lower. While chlorination of isothiazolinone biocides at pH 7.1 was dominated by Cl 2 O-oxidation, acidic pH and elevated Cl - concentration favored free active chlorine (FAC) speciation into Cl 2 and increased overall isothiazolinone removal. Regardless of the dominant FAC species, the elimination of MIT and CMIT resulted in an immediate loss of acute toxicity under all experimental conditions, which was attributed to a preferential attack at the S-atom resulting in subsequent formation of sulfoxides and sulfones and eventually an S-elimination. However, chlorination of isothiazolinone biocides in secondary effluent only achieved <10% elimination at typical disinfection chlorine exposure 200 mg·L -1 ·min, but was predicted to be remarkably increased by acidizing solution to pH 5.5. Background and Aims: Acute pancreatitis (AP) is an acute inflammatory disease that can lead to death. Mir-325-3p is strongly and abnormally expressed in many diseases, necessitating exploration of its function and mechanism in AP., Methods: Blood samples from AP patients and mice were analyzed. The expression levels of miR-325-3p in AP patients and mouse were detected. Whether miR-325-3p targets RIPK3 gene was predicted by TargetScan online database and dual luciferase reporter assay. In vitro experiments verified the effect of miR-325-3p overexpression on caerulein-induced MPC83 pancreatic acinar cancer cell line. In vivo experiments verified the effect of overexpression of miR-325-3p on the disease degree of pancreatic tissues in AP mice., Results: Analysis of blood samples from AP patients and experiments in mice demonstrated that expression of miR-325-3p was significantly reduced during the process of AP in humans and mice. Predicted using the TargetScan online database and through dual luciferase reporter assay detection, miR-325-3p directly targets the RIPK3 gene. In vitro experiments revealed that overexpression of miR-325-3p reversed caerulein-induced apoptosis and necroptosis in MPC83 pancreatic acinar cancer cell line. We used Z-VAD-FMK to assess necroptosis and demonstrated that miR-325-3p targets necroptosis to reduce cell damage. In subsequent experiments in mice, we verified that overexpression of miR-325-3p reduces inflammation, edema, hemorrhage, and necrosis in acute pancreatitis. Characteristic western blot, immunohistochemistry, and transmission electron microscopy results revealed that overexpression of miR-325-3p reduces the severity of acute pancreatitis by inhibiting pancreatic necroptosis in AP mice., Conclusions: The current research results indicate that miR-325-3p directly targets RIPK3 and exerts a protective role in mouse AP. Necroptosis is still the primary mechanism of RIPK3 regulation. Objective: To investigate the analgesic mechanism of electroacupuncture (EA) in rats with chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS)., Methods: Thirty male SD rats were randomly divided into sham group, model group and EA group, with ten rats in each group. The CP/CPPS model was prepared by injecting 50 μL of complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) into the ventral lobes of the prostate tissue, and the sham group was injected with the same dose of saline. After 14 days of modeling, EA was applied to Guanyuan (CV4), Zhongji (CV3), Sanyinjiao (SP6) and Huiyang (BL35) in the EA group. After four courses, H&E staining was performed to observe the prostate tissue morphology, transcriptome sequencing (RNA-Seq) was performed for each group, and the selected signaling pathways were verified by qRT-PCR., Results: The RNA-Seq analysis results suggested that the analgesic effect of EA on CP/CPPS may be achieved by regulating prostate gene expression, which may be related to multiple biological processes and signaling pathways. qRT-PCR results showed that the vanillic acid receptor subtype 1 of the transient receptor potential (TRPV1), phospholipase C (PLC), protein kinase C (PKC), cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), and protein kinase A (PKA) were all upregulated in the model group compared to the sham group ( p < 0.01). Background: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is known to alter the biventricular shape and temporal phases of the cardiac cycle. The presence of interventricular septal (IVS) displacement has been associated with the severity of PH. There has been limited cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) data regarding the temporal parameters of the cardiac cycle in PH. This study aimed to quantify the temporal changes in the cardiac cycle derived from CMR in PH patients with and without IVS displacement and sought to understand the mechanism of cardiac dysfunction in the cardiac cycle. Methods: Patients with PH who had CMR and right heart catheterization (RHC) examinations were included retrospectively. Patients were divided into an IVS non-displacement (IVSND) group and an IVS displacement (IVSD) group according to IVS morphology, as observed on short-axis cine CMR images. Additionally, age-matched healthy volunteers were included as the health control (HC). Temporal parameters, IVS displacement, ventricular volume and functional parameters were obtained by CMR, and pulmonary hemodynamics were obtained by RHC. The risk stratification of the PH patients was also graded according to the guidelines. Results: A total of 70 subjects were included, consisting of 33 IVSD patients, 15 IVSND patients, and 22 HC patients. In the IVSND group, only the right ventricle ejection fraction (RVEF) was decreased in the ventricular function, and no temporal change in the cardiac cycle was found. A prolonged isovolumetric relaxation time (IRT) and shortened filling time (FT) in both ventricles, along with biventricular dysfunction, were detected in the IVSD group (p < 0.001). The IRT of the right ventricle (IRTRV) and FT of the right ventricle (FTRV) in the PH patients were associated with pulmonary vascular resistance, right cardiac index, and IVS curvature, and the IRTRV was also associated with the RVEF in a multivariate regression analysis. A total of 90% of the PH patients in the IVSD group were stratified into intermediate- and high-risk categories, and they showed a prolonged IRTRV and a shortened FTRV. The IRTRV was also the predictor of the major cardiovascular events. Conclusions: The temporal changes in the cardiac cycle were related to IVS displacement and mainly impacted the diastolic period of the two ventricles in the PH patients. The IRT and FT changes may provide useful pathophysiological information on the progression of PH.

New rhenium bipyridyl complexes with dipyrromethene-BF 2 chromophores (A-ReBDP-CZ, A-ReBDP 2 , ReBDP-CZ, and ReBDP 2 ) were developed for highly efficient photocatalytic carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) reduction to carbon monoxide (CO). These catalysts consisted of two moderate electron-deficient groups (dipyrromethene-BF 2 , BDP) as the visible-light-harvesting antenna as well as both electron donor (N-phenylcarbazole, CZ) and acceptor (BDP) on Re bipyridyl framework. Among ReBDP-CZ and ReBDP 2 complexes, the ReBDP 2 incorporating two electron-deficient BDP chromophores had a longer-lived photoexcited state (182.4 μs) and a twofold enhanced molar absorption coefficient (ϵ=157000 m -1  cm -1 ) compared with ReBDP-CZ. Thus, ReBDP 2 achieved the superior photocatalytic reactivity and stability with a CO turnover number (TON CO ) value as high as 1323 and quantum yield (Φ CO ) up to 55 %, which was the most excellent photocatalysis efficiency among the single-active-site Re catalysts without additional photosensitizer. Furthermore, the acetylene-bridged linker was detrimental to the photoactivity and durability of the catalyst. Objective: To explore the possible mechanism of electroacupuncture (EA) underlying improvement of chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS)., Methods: Fifty SD rats were randomly divided into control, model, sham operation, EA and sham EA groups ( n =10 rats in each group). The CPPS model was established by injecting complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA, 50 μL) into the ventral lobes of the prostate. EA (2 Hz/100 Hz) was applied to "Guanyuan"(CV4), "Zhongji"(CV3), "Sanyinjiao" (SP6) and "Huiyang"(BL35) once daily for 40 min, 5 days a week for 4 weeks, while rats in the sham EA group were treated with the same acupoints but without electrical stimulation. Mechanical pain threshold (MPT) and heat pain threshold (HPT) were measured before and after intervention. The body weight and prostate weight were measured and prostate index was calculated. Histopathological changes of prostate tissue were observed by HE staining. The levels of cycloxygenase-2 (COX-2), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and β-endorphin (β-EP) in prostate tissue were detected by ELISA., Results: Compared with the control and sham operation groups, the MPT and HPT were significantly lower ( P <0.01), and the prostate weight, prostate index, the contents of PGE2 and COX-2 were significantly increased ( P <0.01), while the content of β-EP was significantly decreased ( P <0.01) in the model group. Compared with the model group, the MPT and HPT were significantly increased ( P <0.01) after 3 and 4 courses of treatment, and the prostate weight, prostate index, the contents of PGE2 and COX-2 were significantly decreased ( P <0.01), while the content of β-EP was significantly increased ( P <0.01) in the EA group, rather than in the sham EA group ( P >0.05)., Conclusion: EA can effectively relieve pain in CPPS rats, which may be related to its functions in down-regulating COX-2 and PGE2, and up-regulating β-EP.

Drug resistance is a significant factor that hinders the success of cancer chemotherapy. The widely recognized mechanisms of drug resistance include changes to cell proliferation, cycle/apoptosis, drug metabolism/transport, DNA damage and the epithelial to mesenchymal transition. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), short non-coding RNAs with lengths of approximately 19-25 nucleotides, are related to cancer drug resistance, which is regulated by the aforementioned mechanisms. Based on the importance of miRNAs in regulating drug resistance, it is also necessary to take appropriate miRNA detection methods into consideration. To date, a number of advanced miRNA detection methods with high specificity and sensitivity have been developed, such as isothermal amplification-based methods, nanomaterial-based methods, chromatography-based methods, mass spectrometry-based methods and so on. Herein, biogenesis of miRNAs, the relationship between miRNAs and cancer drug resistance, and miRNA detection methods are introduced and discussed to facilitate the development of non-invasive diagnosis and inhibition of cancer drug resistance.

The paper summarizes the valuable experience of the famous teachers of all generations in the teaching & research room of meridians and acupoints of Beijing University of CM. The shortcomings are presented when the acupoints are explained in accordance with the flowing route of meridians in classroom teaching of Science of Meridians and Acupoints. Hence, it is proposed that the acupoint names should be interpreted specially for the acupoints distributed on the same meridians or adjacent ones. It is suggested to emphasize the correlation of each acupoint with its adjacent ones from the perspective of the cultural connotation of acupoint names, and then, the differences and similarities in their clinical indications can be analyzed. Eventually, a new approach to the classroom teaching of Science of Meridians and Acupoints may be provided to guide the excavation of traditional cultural connotation and establish the cultural self-confidence and professional identity.

Purpose: To report the clinical outcomes and evaluate the efficacy of a novel bubble ultra-wide field viewing system for vitreoretinal surgery., Design: Prospective, noncomparative, interventional case series., Participants: One hundred and fifty-one eyes of 146 consecutive patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), vitreous haemorrhage originating from retinal vein occlusion (VH-RVO), epiretinal membrane (EM), macular hole (MH) or retinal detachment (RD) who underwent vitreoretinal surgery using the bubble ultra-wide field viewing system were included., Methods: A standard phacoemulsification was performed on each patient. Core humour and mid-peripheral vitreous humour were removed using a planoconcave lens. A suitably sized bubble was infused to attach to the posterior capsule or the anterior chamber depending on the integrity of the posterior capsule. The planoconcave lens and the air bubble formed the wide-angle viewing system, through which peripheral vitrectomy was performed., Main Outcome Measures: Range of applications, field of view, model validation and complications were recorded., Results: The new ultra-wide field viewing system was successfully applied in all eyes, including 34 with PDR, 28 VH-RVO, 28 EM, 25 MH and 36 RD. Peripheral vitrectomy, local or panretinal laser photocoagulation, and removal of the peripheral proliferative membrane were successfully performed while viewing through this system. Maximum peripheral retinal area observable during the procedure was positively correlated with pupil diameter. Model analysis results showed that when the pupil diameter was 6 mm, the maximum field of view was approximately 128.1- 148.0 degrees with this system. Of 142 eyes, the main intraoperative complication was iatrogenic retinal breaks (IRBs) in 8 eyes (5.3%) and posterior capsule injury by vitreous cutter during bubble removal in 6 eyes (4.2%). The postsurgery mean best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) (0.48 ± 0.39 logMAR) was significantly improved compared with the preoperative mean BCVA (1.60 ± 1.08 logMAR, p < 0.001). No incidents of postoperative choroidal detachment, secondary glaucoma or endophthalmitis were recorded., Conclusions: For patients with lens excision or absence, vitreoretinal surgery can be successfully performed using the novel viewing system described here. Background: Cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL), caused by mutations in NOTCH3, is the most common cause of hereditary cerebral small vessel disease. Whether it will involve systemic vasculopathy such as retinal vessel remains unknown. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) is a noninvasive technique for visualising retinal blood flow. We analysed vessel density and retinal thickness in patients with CADASIL and investigated their correlations with disease severity., Methods: This prospective study enrolled 35 patients with CADASIL (59 eyes) and 35 healthy controls (54 eyes). OCT-A was used to measure the vessel density of the macular region and the thickness of retinal layers. Patients with CADASIL were divided into stroke (n = 20) and nonstroke (n = 15) subgroups and underwent cognition and gait speed evaluation. Neuroimaging markers of cortical thickness, white matter hyperintensity, lacunae, and cerebral microbleeds were examined through brain magnetic resonance imaging., Results: The OCT-A parameters, including vessel density, were comparable between the patients with CADASIL and the controls. In patients with CADASIL, vessel density in the superficial retinal plexus in the macula as was inner retinal thickness was significantly lower in the stroke than the nonstroke subgroup. Macular vessel density and inner retinal thickness were positively correlated with gait speed, while negatively correlated with number of lacunae., Conclusions: OCT-A is potentially a useful tool for evaluating disease severity, ischaemic burden, and neurodegeneration in patients with advanced CADASIL., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Background: Nitrogen is an essential macronutrient for plant growth and development. Crops with a high nitrogen input usually have high yields. However, outbreaks of brown planthoppers (Nilaparvata lugens; BPH) frequently occur on rice farms with excessive nitrogen inputs. Rice plants carrying BPH resistance genes are used for integrated pest management. Thus, the impact of nitrogen on the resistance of rice near-isogenic lines (NILs) with BPH resistance genes was investigated., Results: We tested these NILs using a standard seedbox screening test and a modified bulk seedling test under different nitrogen treatments. The amount of nitrogen applied had an impact on the resistance of some lines with BPH resistance genes. In addition, three NILs (NIL-BPH9, NIL-BPH17, and NIL-BPH32) were further examined for antibiosis and antixenosis under varying nitrogen regimes. The N. lugens nymph population growth rate, honeydew excretion, female fecundity, and nymph survival rate on the three NILs were not affected by different nitrogen treatments except the nymph survival rate on NIL-BPH9 and the nymph population growth rate on NIL-BPH17. Furthermore, in the settlement preference test, the preference of N. lugens nymphs for IR24 over NIL-BPH9 or NIL-BPH17 increased under the high-nitrogen regime, whereas the preference of N. lugens nymphs for IR24 over NIL-BPH32 was not affected by the nitrogen treatments., Conclusions: Our results indicated that the resistance of three tested NILs did not respond to different nitrogen regimes and that NIL-BPH17 exerted the most substantial inhibitory effect on N. lugens growth and development., (© 2022. The use of vacuum-UV/UV (185/254 nm) for trace organic contaminants (TOrCs) elimination during wastewater treatments has attracted much attention. Advanced oxidation processes which combine VUV/UV and additional oxidants (vacuum-UV/UV-based advanced oxidation processes, VUV/UV-AOPs) provide a promising method for eliminating recalcitrant and toxic TOrCs for wastewater reclamation. Researches in this area are increasing but the promoting effects, mechanisms, and influencing factors have not been well summarized. A comprehensive discussion of the limitations of this technique and future research directions is needed. VUV/UV-AOPs have considerable synergistic effects by increasing usage of VUV/UV photons and the oxidant, which increases radical generation. In terms of elimination kinetics, VUV/UV-AOPs outperform conventional UV-AOPs and VUV/UV processes in most cases; a 1.2-87.7-fold increase of the fluence-based kinetic constant is achieved. In terms of energy efficiency per order (EE/O) of TOrCs elimination, the EE/O of VUV/UV-AOPs only accounts for 4% of UV-AOPs and 63% of VUV/UV. However, VUV/UV-AOPs still need to be further investigated. Firstly, although VUV and UV processes have similar radical formation pathways, limited information is available on the quantum yields of photolysis and radical formation of oxidants under VUV irradiation. Secondly, optimization of VUV/UV-AOPs operating conditions, especially oxidant dosage and water-flow patterns, is needed. Thirdly, VUV/UV-AOPs are significantly inhibited by organic and inorganic matters, but the mechanisms of inhibition on VUV/UV scattering, radical quenching, and radical conversion are not well understood. Such inhibition suggests that the use of VUV/UV-AOPs would be limited to relatively clear water treatment, e.g., reverse osmosis effluent for potable water reuse and ultrapure water production. Metals that accumulate in plants may confer protection against herbivorous insects, a phenomenon known as elemental defense. However, this strategy has not been widely explored in important crops such as rice ( Oryza sativa L.), where it could help to reduce the use of chemical pesticides. Here, we investigated the potential of copper (Cu) and iron (Fe) micronutrient supplements for the protection of rice against a major insect pest, the rice leaffolder ( Cnaphalocrocis medinalis ). We found that intermediate levels of Cu (20 μM CuSO 4 ) and high concentrations of Fe (742 μM Fe) did not inhibit the growth of C. medinalis larvae but did inhibit rice root growth and reduce grain yield at the reproductive stage. In contrast, high levels of Cu (80 μM CuSO 4 ) inhibited C. medinalis larval growth and pupal development but also adversely affected rice growth at the vegetative stage. Interestingly, treatment with 10 μM CuSO 4 had no adverse effects on rice growth or yield components at the reproductive stage. These data suggest that pest management based on the application of Cu may be possible, which would be achieved by a higher effective pesticide dose to prevent or minimize its phytotoxicity effects in plants.

Background: Malnutrition is a significantly poor prognostic factor for a variety of cardiovascular diseases. However, its prevalence and prognostic value in hypertensive patients is still unclear. The present study sought to determine the prevalence and prognostic value of malnutrition in hypertensive patients in a community setting., Methods: We included 9,949 hypertensive patients from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) (2005-2014). The Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score, the Nutritional Risk Index (NRI), and the Naples Prognostic Score (NPS) were applied to assess the nutritional status of participants. A Cox regression model was established to examine the association between malnutrition and cardiovascular and all-cause mortality., Results: In all, 19.9, 3.9, and 82.9% hypertensive patients were considered to have malnutrition as evaluated by the CONUT, NRI, and NPS, respectively. Malnutrition assessed by CONUT and NRI was independently associated with cardiovascular mortality (HR [95% CI]) for mild and moderate-to-severe degree of malnutrition, respectively: 1.41 (1.04-1.91) and 5.79 (2.34-14.29) for CONUT; 2.60 (1.34-5.07) and 3.30 (1.66-6.56) for NRI (all P < 0.05), and for all-cause mortality (HR [95% CI]) for mild and moderate-to-severe degree of malnutrition, respectively: 1.48 (1.30-1.70) and 4.87 (3.40-6.98) for CONUT; 1.72 (1.24-2.39) and 2.60 (1.96-3.44) for NRI (all P < 0.01). Objective: To compare the completion time of endotracheal intubation and laryngeal mask implantation in operating room and on slope of ski resort, and to discuss the optimal method of estab-lishing artificial airway on slope of ski resort., Methods: The simulator was placed with the head under the feet on slope of ski resort. The artificial airway was established by tracheal intubation assisted by video laryngoscope (endotracheal intubation group) and laryngeal mask placement (laryngeal mask group) respectively by an anesthesiologist who wore full set of ski suits, helmets, goggles, gloves and ski boots. Each method was repeated 5 times, and the operation time of artificial airway establishment was recorded. While the simulated human was placed flat on the operating table in an operating room of a hospital, and the artificial airway was established by the same anesthesiologist using the same methods. Time was recorded and repeated for 5 times. The completion time of endotracheal intubation and laryngeal mask placement in the operating room and on the ski slope were compared., Results: The operating time of tracheal intubation in the operating room was longer than that of laryngeal mask placement [(79.8±10.4) s vs . (53.4±2.7) s, P =0.005], and the operating time of endotracheal intubation on the ski slope was longer than that of laryngeal mask placement [(209.2±32.7) s vs . (72.2±3.1) s, P =0.001]. The time of endotracheal intubation group on the slope of the ski resort was longer than that in the opera-ting room( t =-7.851, P =0.001). The time of laryngeal mask group on the slope was longer than that in the operating room ( t =-19.391, P < 0.001)., Conclusion: On ski slope, both of tracheal intubation assisted by video laryngoscope and laryngeal mask placement can quickly complete the establishment of artificial airway, but the time required is longer than that in the operating room. The time of laryngeal mask placement to establish artificial airway is shorter than that of tracheal intubation assisted video laryngoscope, which may have a certain advantage in ski rescue.

Background: Hospice nurses may devote more emotional labor during the empathy process with patients, and this empathy can be used as a form of psychological behavior of emotional labor in the hospice care model. The aim of this study was to analyze hospice nurses' empathy characteristics in the context of emotional labor theory, and explore the impact of empathy on patient care., Methods: We conducted semi-participant observations from three hospitals and multicenter in-depth interviews with n = 26 hospice nurses from eight cities. Interviews were transcribed, and directed content analysis was applied., Results: Two categories with four sub-categories were extracted from the data analysis. Category 1 described the "empathic labor" process which covers cognitive empathy (including empathic imagination, empathic consideration, and empathic perception) and affective empathy (including natural empathy, surface empathy, and deep empathy). The second category concerns the outcome of nurses' "empathic labor" which incorporates both positive and negative effects., Conclusions: The findings indicated that hospice nurses' empathy process should be understood as emotional labor. Nursing managers should pay more attention to raising the ability of deep empathy with hospice nurses, and explore more sufficient active empowerment strategies to alleviate the negative impact of empathy on nurses and to strengthen nurses' deep empathy with terminal ill patients., (© 2022. A graphene-based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) prism coupler sensor is proposed for the rapid detection of immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies. The feasibility of the proposed sensor is demonstrated by measuring the IgG concentration in phantom mouse and human serum solutions over the range of 0-250 ng/mL. The results show that the circular dichroism and principal fast axis angle of linear birefringence increase in line with increases in IgG concentration over the considered range. Moreover, the proposed device has a resolution of 5-10 ng/mL and a response time of less than three minutes. In general, the sensor provides a promising approach for IgG detection and has significant potential for rapid infectious viral disease testing applications.

Synergistic effects of ozone (O 3 ) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS, HSO 5 - ) for isothiazolinone biocides degradation was studied. The synergistic ozonation process (O 3 /PMS) increased the efficiency of methyl-isothiazolinone (MIT) and chloro-methyl-isothiazolinone (CMIT) degradation to 91.0% and 81.8%, respectively, within 90 s at pH 7.0. This is 30.6% and 62.5% higher than the corresponding ozonation efficiency, respectively. Total radical formation value (R ct, R ) for the O 3 /PMS process was 24.6 times that of ozonation alone. Calculated second-order rate constants for the reactions between isothiazolinone biocides and (k SO4 -,MIT and k SO4 -,CMIT ) were 8.15 × 10 9 and 4.49 × 10 9  M -1  s -1 , respectively. Relative contributions of O 3 , hydroxyl radical (OH) and oxidation to MIT and CMIT removal were estimated, which were 15%, 45%, and 40% for O 3 , OH and oxidation to MIT, and 1%, 67%, and 32% for O 3 , OH and oxidation to CMIT at pH 7.0, respectively. Factors influencing the O 3 /PMS process, namely the solution pH, chloride ions (Cl - ), and bicarbonate (HCO 3 - ), were evaluated. Increasing the solution pH markedly accelerated O 3 decay and OH and formation, thus weakening the relative contribution of O 3 oxidation while enhancing that of OH and . Cl - had a negligible effect on MIT and CMIT degradation. Under the dual effect of bicarbonate (HCO 3 - ) as inhibitor and promoter, low concentrations (1-2 mM) of bicarbonate weakly promoted MIT and CMIT degradation, while high concentrations (10-20 mM) induced strong inhibition. Bacterial symbionts of insects have been shown to play important roles in host fitness. However, little is known about the bacterial community of Tessaratoma papillosa which is one of the most destructive pests of the well-known fruits Litchi chinensis Sonn and Dimocarpus longan Lour in Oriental Region, especially in South-east Asia and adjacent areas. In this study, we surveyed the bacterial community diversity and dynamics of T. papillosa in all developmental stages with both culture-dependent and culture-independent methods by the third-generation sequencing technology. Five bacterial phyla were identified in seven developmental stages of T. papillosa. Proteobacteria was the dominant phylum and Pantoea was the dominant genus of T. papillosa. The results of alpha and beta diversity analyses showed that egg stage had the most complex bacterial community. Some of different developmental stages showed similarities, which were clustered into three phases: (1) egg stage, (2) early nymph stages (instars 1-3), and (3) late nymph stages (instars 4-5) and adult stage. Functional prediction indicated that the bacterial community played different roles in these three phases. Furthermore, 109 different bacterial strains were isolated and identified from various developmental stages. This study revealed the relationship between the symbiotic bacteria and the development of T. papillosa, and may thus contribute to the biological control techniques of T. papillosa in the future., (© 2021. Pre-ozonation can reduce the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) and related adverse effects during subsequent chlorination, but the change of each molecular weight (MW) fraction during each step of combined pre-ozonation and post-chlorination has not been well illustrated. In this study, it was investigated in terms of electron-donating-moieties (EDMs) and UVA 254 for a representative natural organic matter from Suwanee river (SRNOM). Pre-ozonation suppressed the post-chlorination of SRNOM through oxidation of almost all EDMs (>85%) and UVA 254 (>90%) in high MW fractions (HMW, >3.2 kDa) and moderate EDMs (43%) and UVA 254 (72%) in medium MW fractions (MMW, 1.0-3.2 kDa). Furthermore, pre-ozonation led to comparable abatements of EDMs and UVA 254 for HMW fractions, but lower abatement of EDMs than UVA 254 for MMW fractions. However, when t-BuOH was used as an • OH-quencher, pre-ozonation led to a few instances in which there were higher abatements of EDMs than UVA 254 for the MMW fraction. These findings suggested that the HMW fraction dominantly underwent ring-cleavage of phenols via O 3 - or • OH-oxidation. Differently, the MMW fraction underwent ring-cleavage of phenols and quinones-formation via O 3 -oxidation, but occasionally underwent hydroxylation and hydro-phenol formation via • OH-oxidation. Because of forehand elimination of reactive moieties (e.g. EDMs), pre-ozonation obviously inhibited the formation of representative DBPs (67%-84% inhibition), total organic chloride (51% inhibition) and cytotoxicity (31% inhibition), but may have promoted the formation of carbonyl-DBPs (trichloroacetone and chloral hydrate). When compared with UVA 254 , EDMs would better for surrogate of DBPs formation. EDM abatement surrogated the formation of total organic chlorine (TOCl) and cytotoxicity following a two-stage phase, possibly because the speciation of DBPs and transformation products varied with the abatement of EDMs., (Copyright © 2021 The Authors. Purpose: Bladder cancer treatment remains a major clinical challenge due to therapy resistance and a high recurrence rate. Profiling intratumor heterogeneity can reveal the molecular mechanism of bladder cancer recurrence., Experimental Design: Here, we performed single-cell RNA sequencing and Assay for Transposase-Accessible Chromatin using sequencing (ATAC-seq) on tumors from 13 patients with low recurrence risk, high recurrence risk, and recurrent bladder cancer., Results: Our study generated a comprehensive cancer-cell atlas consisting of 54,971 single cells and identified distinct cell subpopulations. We found that the cancer stem-cell subpopulation is enriched during bladder cancer recurrence with elevated expression of EZH2. We further defined a subpopulation-specific molecular mechanism whereby EZH2 maintains H3K27me3-mediated repression of the NCAM1 gene, thereby inactivating the cell invasive and stemness transcriptional program. Furthermore, taking advantage of this large single-cell dataset, we elucidated the spectrum of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in clinical samples and revealed distinct EMT features associated with bladder cancer subtypes. We identified that TCF7 promotes EMT in corroboration with single-cell ATAC with high-throughput sequencing (scATAC-seq) analysis. Additionally, we constructed regulatory networks specific to recurrent bladder cancer., Conclusions: Our study and analytic approaches herein provide a rich resource for the further study of cancer stem cells and EMT in the bladder cancer research field., (©2021 American Association for Cancer Research.)

Aims: This study aimed to assess the clinical characteristics and long-term survival outcome in patients with Takayasu's arteritis-associated pulmonary hypertension (TA-PH)., Methods and Results: We conducted a nationally representative cohort study of TA-PH using data from the National Rare Diseases Registry System of China. Patients with pulmonary artery involvement who fulfilled the diagnostic criteria of Takayasu's arteritis and pulmonary hypertension were included. The primary outcome was the time from diagnosis of TA-PH to the occurrence of all-cause death. Between January 2007 and January 2019, a total of 140 patients were included, with a mean age of 41.4 years at diagnosis, and a female predominance (81%). Patients with TA-PH had severely haemodynamic and functional impairments at diagnosis. Significant improvements have been found in N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and haemodynamic profiles in patients with TA-PH receiving drugs approved for pulmonary arterial hypertension. The overall 1-, 3-, and 5-year survival rates in TA-PH were 94.0%, 83.2%, and 77.2%, respectively. Predictors associated with an increased risk of all-cause death were syncope [adjusted hazard ratio (HR) 5.38 (95% confidence interval 1.77-16.34), P = 0.003], NT-proBNP level [adjusted HR 1.04 (1.03-1.06), P < 0.001], and mean right atrial pressure [adjusted HR 1.07 (1.01-1.13), P = 0.015]., Conclusion: Patients with TA-PH were predominantly female and had severely compromised haemodynamics. More than 80% of patients in our cohort survived for at least 3 years. The photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 into fuels offers the prospect for creating a new CO 2 economy. Harnessing visible light-driven CO 2 -to-CO reduction mediated by the long-lived triplet excited state of rhenium(I) tricarbonyl complexes is a challenging approach. We here develop a series of new mononuclear rhenium(I) tricarbonyl complexes (Re-1-Re-4) based on the imidazole-pyridine skeleton for photo-driven CO 2 reduction. These catalysts are featured by combining pyridyl-imidazole with the aromatic ring and different pendant organic groups onto the N1 position of 1,3-imidazole unit, which display phosphorescence under Ar-saturated solution even at ambient conditions. By contrast, {Re[9-(pyren-1-yl)-10-(pyridin-2-yl)-9H-pyreno[4,5-d]imidazole)](CO) 3 Cl} (Re-4) by introducing pyrene ring at the N1 position of pyrene-fused imidazole unit exhibits superior catalytic performance with a higher turnover number for CO (TON CO =124) and >99.9 % selectivity, primarily ascribed to the strong visible light-harvesting ability, long-lived triplet lifetimes (164.2 μs) and large reductive quenching constant. Moreover, the rhenium(I) tricarbonyl complexes derived from π-extended pyrene chromophore exhibit a long lifetime corresponding to its ligand-localized triplet state ( 3 IL) evidenced from spectroscopic investigations and DFT calculations., (© 2021 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

The microbial communities associated with insects play critical roles in many physiological functions such as digestion, nutrition, and defense. Meanwhile, with the development of sequencing technology, more and more studies begin to focus on broader biodiversity of insects and the corresponding mechanisms of insect microbial symbiosis, which need longer time collecting in the field. However, few studies have evaluated the effect of insect microbiome sample preservation approaches especially in different time durations or have assessed whether these approaches are appropriate for both next-generation sequencing (NGS) and third-generation sequencing (TGS) technologies. Here, we used Tessaratoma papillosa (Hemiptera: Tessaratomidae), an important litchi pest, as the model insect and adopted two sequencing technologies to evaluate the effect of four different preservation approaches (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), ethanol, air dried, and RNAlater). We found the samples treated by air dried method, which entomologists adopted for morphological observation and classical taxonomy, would get worse soon. RNAlater as the most expensive approaches for insect microbiome sample preservation did not suit for field works longer than 1 month. We recommended CTAB and ethanol as better preservatives in longer time field work for their effectiveness and low cost. Comparing with the full-length 16S rRNA gene sequenced by TGS, the V4 region of 16S rRNA gene sequenced by NGS has a lower resolution trait and may misestimate the composition of microbial communities. Our results provided recommendations for suitable preservation approaches applied to insect microbiome studies based on two sequencing technologies, which can help researchers properly preserve samples in field works., (© 2021.
