61. Linearly shifting ferromagnetic resonance response of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 thin film for body temperature sensors.

Abstract

Human body temperature not only reflects vital signs, but also affects the state of various organs through blood circulation, and even affects lifespan. Here a wireless body temperature detection scheme was presented that the temperature was extracted by investigating the out-of-plane (OP) ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) field of 10.2 nm thick La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) film using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technique. Within the range of 34–42 °C, the OP FMR field changes linearly with the increasing or decreasing temperature, and this variation comes from the linear responses of magnetization to the fluctuant temperature. Using this method, a tiny temperature change (< 0.1 °C) of organisms can be detected accurately and sensitively, which shows great potential in body temperature monitoring for humans and mammals. Abstract

Obesity is associated with an increasing tendency which is a typical metabolic syndrome resulting from metabolic disorders due to the excessive food intake, and thus leading to a citical threat to human health. Studies were proved that food reward was an important factor affecting feeding behavior and played a key role in the occurrence and development of obesity. Recent studies indicated that brain-gut peptide, leptin, insulin and gut microflora could directly or indirectly regulate appetite and stabilize body weight through dialogue between intestine and brain, which mediated a crucial role in preventing obesity. Therefore, this review highlighted the role of the dialogue between intestine and brain in food reward and expanded strategies for the prevention and treatment of obesity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

66. Insights Into the Two-Dimensional MoS 2 Grown on AlGaN(GaN) Substrates by CVD Method.

Abstract

Two-dimensional (2D) MoS2 was grown on AlGaN(GaN) substrates by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and 2D-3D MoS2-AlGaN(GaN) heterostructures were formed. The MoS2 crystal on AlGaN surface has a mixed and irregular shape including single and multiple layers, while the single layer of triangular MoS2 is basically prepared on GaN surface. Combined with theoretical first-principles analysis, it is found the adsorption of AlGaN to MoS2 is lower than that of GaN, which leads to the deposition of MoS2 molecules on AlGaN surface, forming multilayer shapes. In addition, Both the MoS2-AlGaN(GaN) heterostructures exhibit indirect band gaps and broad-band light absorption performances. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

67. The Experience of a Lifetime: Interactive Digital Experience Beyond the Screen

Abstract

Screen-based digital experience design is blooming among the local businesses in Metro Vancouver along with the increased pervasiveness of information technologies, new digital products in contemporary society. However, there are significantly fewer cases and related businesses around tangible interactive digital experience in which tangible objects and physical spaces replace the screen as the site of interaction. This thesis project aims to explore the specialties of the tangible interactive experience compared to the digital experience on the screen or in the virtual space. Additionally, the author investigates how to leverage user experience design methodologies in the process of designing an experimental interactive experience. In this practice-based exploration, the author prototyped four interactive digital experiences using different interactive technologies and tools tailored to different use case scenarios: 1. an interactive offline retail experience, 2. a “magical” and playful painting, 3. a room-scale interactive installation, and 4. an immersive meditation activity. These projects illustrate and explore the implementation of tangible interactions into digital experience design. During the development process, the author applied several user experience design methodologies in the projects – including field research, interviews, questionnaires, and design probes – to develop a workable framework designing tangible interactive experiences throughout the research project. The author aims to outline key implications of applying principles of user experience design to the field of tangible interactive environments. In the process, the author argues that tangible interactive design is indispensable in a successful and engaging digital experience, and thus worth investing in and exploring further in Vancouver’s marketplace.
