- Abstract
The oilseed crops Crambe abyssinica and Camelina sativa produce oils rich in erucic acid and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), respectively. After pressing the oil, a seed cake remains as a protein-rich by-product. Edible insects may convert this seed press cake and the defatted seed meal produced from it into insect biomass suitable for animal feed. Black soldier fly larvae (BSF, Hermetia illucens) can grow on a wide range of organic waste types, but may be hindered by excess protein or the plant toxins characteristic for these two oilseed crops, i.e. glucosinolates and their breakdown products. We tested the effects of 25, 50 and 100% oilseed by-product inclusion in the diet on survival, development, biomass production and fatty acid composition of BSF larvae. Larval performance on diets with up to 50% camelina by-product or 25% crambe by-product was similar to performance on control diet (chicken feed), and decreased with higher inclusion percentages. Larval fatty acid profiles differed significantly among diets, with larvae fed press cake more distinct from control than larvae fed seed meal. Larvae fed camelina press cake had more α-linolenic acid, whereas larvae fed crambe contained most oleic acid. The n-6:n-3 PUFA ratio decreased with increasing proportion of by-product, especially on camelina diets. Lauric acid content was highest in larvae fed 100% camelina meal or 50% crambe meal. These results indicate that BSF larvae can be successfully grown on diets with camelina or crambe oilseed by-products, and that the resulting larval n-6:n-3 PUFA ratio is favourable for animal feed. However, the fate of glucosinolates and their derivatives remains to be determined, to guarantee chemical safety of camelinaor crambe-fed BSF larvae for animal feed.

- Abstract
Trees that we see every day stay firm in the same place for several years. They are the symbol of nature and one of the most important living beings which are a bridge between the past, the present and the future. According to Andres [1], the monumental trees differ from others of their species regarding their unusual size, their age, or their unusual shape, which means that they are of special natural, historical, cultural, or scenic interest. Characteristics such as their height, trunk diameter, crown shape, or their having witnessed historical events or appearing in myths and legends make these trees of public interest and therefore protected by law. The veteran trees are also different from other trees with their ages, unusual size, unusual shape etc. They can be seen as a candidate for monumental trees. Istanbul, the biggest metropolitan city of Turkey, is particularly rich in monumental and veteran trees. In the study of IMM, the monumental trees and veteran trees of Istanbul city have been identificated and their locations have been stated. According to this study the monumental and veteran plane trees in the urban areas of the city are of special interest while they are of scenic value (throughout the history?!) but also have unwanted features like being nontolerant to arid conditions and also to various diseases [2]. Firstly, in this study the spatial distributions of the two monumental and veteran plane species (Platanus acerifolia, Platanus orientalis) in Istanbul have been revealed. Secondly, these 2518 taxa have been evaluated by the permeability of their existing place, in order to improve protection strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Background: Obesity is the main obstacle for metabolic control in patients with type 2 diabetes. Turkey has the highest prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes in Europe. The effect of obesity on the metabolic control, and the macro-and microvascular complications of patients are not apparent. Objectives: This nationwide survey aimed to investigate the prevalence of overweight and obesity among patients with type 2 diabetes and to search for the impact of obesity on the metabolic control of these patients. We also investigated the independent associates of obesity in patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods: We consecutively enrolled patients who were under follow-up for at least 1 year in 69 tertiary healthcare units in 37 cities. The demographic, anthropometric, and clinical data including medications were recorded. Patients were excluded if they were pregnant, younger than 18 years, had decompensated liver disease, psychiatric disorders interfering with cognition or compliance, had bariatric surgery, or were undergoing renal replacement therapy. Results: Only 10% of patients with type 2 diabetes (n = 4,648) had normal body mass indexes (BMI), while the others were affected by overweight (31%) or obesity (59%). Women had a significantly higher prevalence of obesity (53.4 vs. 40%) and severe obesity (16.6 vs. 3.3%). Significant associations were present between high BMI levels and lower education levels, intake of insulin, antihypertensives and statins, poor metabolic control, or the presence of microvascular complications. Age, gender, level of education, smoking, and physical inactivity were the independent associates of obesity in patients with type 2 diabetes. Conclusion: The TEMD Obesity Study shows that obesity is a major determinant of the poor metabolic control in patients with type 2 diabetes. These results underline the importance of prevention and management of obesity to improve health care in patients with type 2 diabetes. Also, the results point out the independent sociodemographic and clinical associates of obesity, which should be the prior targets to overcome, in the national fight with obesity. BACKGROUND: In a randomized, controlled trial that compared liraglutide, a glucagon-like peptide 1 analogue, with placebo in patients with type 2 diabetes and high cardiovascular risk who were receiving usual care, we found that liraglutide resulted in lower risks of the primary end point (nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, or death from cardiovascular causes) and death. However, the long-term effects of liraglutide on renal outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes are unknown. METHODS: We report the prespecified secondary renal outcomes of that randomized, controlled trial in which patients were assigned to receive liraglutide or placebo. The secondary renal outcome was a composite of new-onset persistent macroalbuminuria, persistent doubling of the serum creatinine level, end-stage renal disease, or death due to renal disease. The risk of renal outcomes was determined with the use of time-to-event analyses with an intention-to-treat approach. Changes in the estimated glomerular filtration rate and albuminuria were also analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 9340 patients underwent randomization, and the median follow-up of the patients was 3.84 years. The renal outcome occurred in fewer participants in the liraglutide group than in the placebo group (268 of 4668 patients vs. 337 of 4672; hazard ratio, 0.78; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.67 to 0.92; P=0.003). This result was driven primarily by the new onset of persistent macroalbuminuria, which occurred in fewer participants in the liraglutide group than in the placebo group (161 vs. 215 patients; hazard ratio, 0.74; 95% CI, 0.60 to 0.91; P=0.004). The rates of renal adverse events were similar in the liraglutide group and the placebo group (15.1 events and 16.5 events per 1000 patient-years), including the rate of acute kidney injury (7.1 and 6.2 events per 1000 patient-years, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: This prespecified secondary analysis shows that, when added to usual care, liraglutide resulted in lower rates of the development and progression of diabetic kidney disease than placebo. Aims: Turkey has the highest prevalence of diabetes in Europe. It is therefore essential to know the overall cardiovascular risk and reveal the predictors of metabolic control in Turkish adults with diabetes mellitus. Methods: A nationwide, multicenter survey consecutively enrolled patients who were under follow up for at least a year. Optimal control was defined as HbA1c < 7%, home arterial blood pressure (ABP) < 135/85 mmHg, or LDL-C < 100 mg/dL. Achieving all parameters indicated triple metabolic control. Results: HbA1c levels of patients (n = 5211) were 8.6 ± 1.9% (71 ± 22 mmol/mol) and 7.7 ± 1.7% (61 ± 19 mmol/mol), in Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, respectively. Glycemic control was achieved in 15.3% and 40.2%, and triple metabolic control was achieved in 5.5% and 10.1%, respectively. Only 1.5% of patients met all the criteria of being non-obese, non-smoker, exercising, and under triple metabolic control. Low education level was a significant predictor of poor glycemic control in both groups. Conclusions: Few patients with Type 2, and even fewer with Type 1 diabetes have optimal metabolic control in Turkey. TEMD study will provide evidence-based information to policy makers to focus more on the quality and sustainability of diabetes care in order to reduce the national burden of the disease. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) is an uncommon thyroid tumor that usually behaves aggressively. After resection, serological surveillance for calcitonin and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is used to prompt a radiographic search for metastatic disease. We report a case of a 65-year-old woman who presented with a large liver metastasis 37 years after she underwent thyroidectomy for organ-confined MTC. Her clinical course over that time showed a smoldering pattern in which she was symptom free until presentation even though her serum calcitonin and CEA concentrations were elevated for 17 years, and a small equivocal radiographic lesion in the liver was detected 10 years prior to presentation. Cytopathology from an ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration of the hepatic lesion was diagnostic for metastatic MTC. This case highlights the ability for smoldering residual MTC to suddenly transform to aggressive biological behavior after a long period of clinical remission. Diagn. International audience; In this study, we demonstrated the suitability of direct injection mass spectrometry headspace analysis for rapid non-invasive quality control of semi-finished dairy ingredients, such as skim milk powder (SMP), whole milk powder (WMP), whey powder (WP) and anhydrous milk fat (AMF), which are widely used as ingredients in the food industry. In this work, for the first time, we applied proton transfer reaction-mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) with a time-of-flight (ToF) analyzer for the rapid and non-invasive analysis of volatile compounds in different samples of SMP, WMP, WP and AMF. We selected different dairy ingredients in various concrete situations (e.g. same producer and different expiration times, different producers and same days of storage, different producers) based on their sensory evaluation. PTR-ToF-MS allowed the separation and characterization of different samples based on the volatile organic compound (VOC) profiles. Statistically significant differences in VOC content were generally coherent with differences in sensory evaluation, particularly for SMP, WMP and WP. The good separation of SMP samples from WMP samples suggested the possible application of PTR-ToF-MS to detect possible cases of adulteration of dairy ingredients for the food industry. Our findings demonstrate the efficient and rapid differentiation of dairy ingredients on the basis of the released VOCs via PTR-ToF-MS analysis and suggest this method as a versatile tool (1) for the facilitation/optimization of the selection of dairy ingredients in the food industry and (2) and for the prompt innovation in the production of dairy ingredients

Intraductal tubulopapillary neoplasm (ITPN) is a rare primary pancreatic neoplasm accounting for less than 1% of all pancreatic exocrine neoplasms and 3% of intraductal neoplasms of the pancreas. Data on this entity are still limited. Here, we report a case of ITPN with cytopathologic and histopathologic findings. A 41-year-old woman with a 2.2 cm cyst in the head of the pancreas for five years was referred to our institution. The endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration produced cytospins were moderately cellular with a few fragments of markedly atypical epithelium. The neoplastic cells displayed high-grade nuclear atypia with enlarged, eccentric nuclei, anisonucleosis and prominent nucleoli, irregular nuclear membranes, high nucleus to cytoplasmic (N/C) ratios, and a moderate amount of cytoplasm with no intracytoplasmic mucin. Histologically, the lesion was found to be an ITPN with focal high-grade dysplasia. No invasive carcinoma was identified. The neoplastic cells exhibited luminal immunolabeling for MUC-1, but were negative for MUC-2, trypsin, chymotrypsin, and P53. Approximately 5% of the neoplastic cells showed Ki-67 immunoreactivity. ITPN of pancreas may be a source of markedly atypical epithelial cells in pancreatic cystic aspiration. Clinical and radiographic findings, molecular mutational analysis, in combination with cytological features are essential to differentiate it from other disease entities.

Objective: To determine if focal ‘nuclear atypia’ or ‘microfollicular architecture’ portends a higher risk of malignancy than other subcategories of atypia of undetermined significance (AUS) in thyroid fine-needle aspirations (FNAs). Study Design: The frequencies of The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology (TBSRTC) categories were calculated from 3,956 thyroid FNAs interpreted over a 26-month period at The Johns Hopkins Hospital after adoption of TBSRTC. TBSRTC criteria were applied strictly. The risk of malignancy, specifically for AUS subcategories, was analyzed by cyto-histo correlation. Results: Of the 133 cases diagnosed as AUS, 32% were found to have stageable carcinoma (not incidental microcarcinoma) on resection. When the subset of AUS with ‘nuclear atypia’ (AUS-N) was separated from other AUS cases, 48% (30/62) of them had stageable carcinoma on resection; of the AUS subset with ‘microfollicular architecture’ (AUS-F), 27% (8/30) were malignant on resection. The ‘suspicious for papillary thyroid carcinoma’ (SPTC) group maintained a higher risk of malignancy versus AUS-N (relative risk, RR 1.57; 95% CI 1.23–1.81). Conclusion: The subcategory of ‘nuclear atypia’ within AUS indicates a higher risk of malignancy than other subcategories of AUS but has a lower risk of malignancy than SPTC does. Thus, it is an important distinction with potential clinical implications.

Optics - Abstract
In this work, a new memristor-based low-pass filter topology is suggested. Memristor-based filters are nonlinear circuits and many of them cannot be solved analytically. To find an approximate analytical solution of the filter equations, MacLaurin series is used for the first time. Time and frequency domain behavior of the filter are obtained. Also, the frequency domain gain and total harmonic distortion characteristics of the filter are given. Results obtained by the small signal model have been compared with the dynamic model results. It is shown that the small signal model is able to predict the filter behavior very well.

BACKGROUND Pineal gland lesions are rare, with only a few cytologic descriptions occurring in the literature, according to the authors' knowledge. The current article describes the cytopathologic characteristics of 20 such lesions with discussion of differential diagnoses. METHODS Cytologic material was obtained either by fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) under stearotactic radiologic guidance or by touch imprinting (TI) at the time of frozen sectioning. The 20 specimens include pineoblastoma (five specimens), pineocytoma (four specimens), astrocytoma (three specimens), germ cell tumor (three specimens), meningioma (one specimen), epidermoid cyst (three specimens), and pineal cyst (one specimen). Smears were stained with Diff-Quik and with Papanicolaou and hematoxylin and eosin stains. In selected specimens, immunoperoxidase (IPOX) stains were performed on cell block sections using synaptophysin, neuron-specific enolase, placental alkaline phosphatase, glial fibrillary acidic protein, leukocyte common antigen, cytokeratins, and human chorionic gonadotropin antibodies. RESULTS Several cytomorphologic characteristics unique to each lesional category with occasional overlapping features were observed. The unique features included the following: small, hyperchromatic, round to oval cells with frequent rosetting (pineocytoma), with a few specimens in addition showing hypercellularity, crowding, mitoses, and necrosis (pineoblastoma); pleomorphic round cells in a fibrillary background (astrocytoma); large polygonal cells with prominent nucleoli and clear cytoplasm (germ cell tumor); spindled fibroblastic cells (meningioma); anucleate squames and mature squamous cells (epidermoid cyst); and small uniform polygonal cells (pineal cyst). When necessary, IPOX studies supported the morphologic diagnoses. CONCLUSIONS FNAB and TI cytology were found to provide a rapid and reliable diagnosis of pineal lesions. This is particularly important when dealing with minute amounts of tissue material. Both techniques appeared to provide equally good cytomorphology on smears. IPOX studies played an important complementary role in difficult cases when performed on cell blocks. Cancer (Cancer Cytopathol) 2005. © 2005 American Cancer Society.

We report the case of a suspicious parotid mass in which molecular determination of loss of heterozygosity (LOH) of chromosome arms 1p and 19q in combination with cytologic and immunohistochemical analysis defined the tumor to be metastatic oligodendroglioma. The patient was a 41-year-old woman who developed a World Health Organization grade II oligodendroglioma in her right frontal lobe at age 32, for which no adjuvant chemo- or radiotherapy was administered. Five years following this diagnosis, radiological assessment revealed a 10-centimeter mass in the tumor bed, suspicious for a recurrence. Resection of this lesion revealed an anaplastic oligodendroglioma (grade III) and adjuvant radiotherapy was given. Eleven months after this surgery the patient presented with a 5.5-cm subcutaneous, non-mobile, non-tender mass in the region of the right parotid gland. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) yielded highly cellular material, morphologically and immunohistochemically suspicious for oligodendroglioma. Molecular analysis of microsatellite loci residing on chromosome arms 1p and 19q was performed using DNA extracted from the patient's recurrent brain oliogdendroglioma and the FNA specimen. This analysis revealed evidence of LOH at all eight of the microsatellite loci tested. The combination of cytologic and molecular findings defined the extracranial tumor to be metastatic oligodendroglioma.

Although cancers metastatic to the thyroid are frequently mentioned in autopsy studies, such a finding is quite rare in routine clinical practice. Metastatic non-small-cell carcinomas to the thyroid may present a diagnostic dilemma, particularly when they share morphological similarities with primary thyroid tumors. Herein, we report a case of metastatic bronchioloalveolar carcinoma that presented as an isolated left thyroid nodule in a 68-year-old woman. The aspirates were cellular and showed numerous papillary-like tissue fragments, elongated nuclei with prominent nuclear grooves, frequent mitoses, and psammoma bodies. The latter features raised the possibility of papillary thyroid carcinoma. However, also seen were three-dimensional tumor nests and acinar-forming fragments. Immunostains (positive for cytokeratin-7 and carcinoembryonic antigen and negative for cytokeratin-20 and thyroglobulin) confirmed the metastatic nature of the carcinoma. In a patient with known primary neoplasm, the differential diagnosis of a thyroid nodule should always include a metastatic lesion along with primary neoplasia.

Objective To analyze the differential diagnosis when keratinized squamous cells are found in a brain aspirate. Study design Twenty cases of brain aspirates with keratinized squamous cells were retrieved (1982-2001). Diagnoses included craniopharyngioma (CP) (n = 11), metastatic squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) (n = 5), epidermoid cyst (EC) (n = 3) and Rathke cleft cyst (RCC) (n = 1). Aspirates were obtained under stereotactic radiologic (CT) guidance. Smears were stained with Diff-Quik or Papanicolaou stain, and cell block sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Radiologic and histopathologic correlation with subsequent resection specimens was performed in selected cases. Results CP showed cellular smears with numerous keratinized squamous cells in a background of degenerated cellular and keratinaceous debris. Also noted were clusters of anucleate squamous cells, multinucleated giant cells, histiocytes, calcified debris and characteristic fragments of basaloid epithelial cells. Metastatic SCC showed single cells and tissue fragments of markedly atypical and focally keratinized cells with enlarged, hyperchromatic nuclei; prominent pleomorphism in a background of necrotic cellular debris and acute inflammatory exudate. EC showed numerous isolated keratinized squamous cells often with prominent keratohyaline granules and occasional parakeratotic cells in a relatively clean background. RCC showed single cells and aggregates of benign-appearing squamous cells admixed with numerous anucleate squames and hemosiderin-laden macrophages. Glandular-type epithelium was present only rarely. Conclusion Squamous cell-containing lesions in the brain present a spectrum of pathologic entities. Although they all display the common morphologic denominator of keratinizing squamous cells, subtle cytomorphologic differences exist in these lesions, permitting an accurate cytopathologic diagnosis. Clinicardiologic features and anatomic location of the tumor in the brain are additionally helpful.

Stereotactic brain fine-needle aspiration (FNA) is a valuable diagnostic modality for evaluating space-occupying central nervous system disorders. Colloid cyst (CC) is a rare nonneoplastic lesion thought to arise from misplaced endodermal tissue in the anterosuperior portion of the third ventricle. This study summarizes cytomorphologic features of CC on FNA along with clinical, radiologic, and histopathologic correlation. Ten cases of CC of the third ventricle diagnosed on FNA were retrospectively reviewed for a period of 12 yr (1989–2000). Material was obtained under stereotactic radiologic guidance. Smears were stained with Diff-Quik and Papanicolaou stains and cell block sections with hematoxylin and eosin. The aspirates showed a characteristic sticky and viscous quality on gross examination. Smears showed abundant, amorphous, proteinaceous material with staining qualities similar to colloid aspirated from thyroid. This included a purplish, filmlike coating of the slide with occasional “cracking” artifact; thick, globular, eosinophilic fragments; and granular, ropelike, and somewhat viscous, mucinous material. Pathognomonic radiating hyphae-like structures were not seen. The cellular components varied from isolated cuboidal/columnar cells to large tissue fragments of glandular-type epithelium with focal ciliated border. Goblet cells were frequently identifiable, as were fragments of collagenous cyst wall. Stereotactic FNA of the CC of the third ventricle is an accurate and cost-effective diagnostic modality. Cytomorphology coupled with the radiologic features is sufficiently unique for the diagnosis of this rare pathologic entity. Diagn. Cytopathol. 2002;27:27–31. © 2002 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
