57. Wind-induced vibration experiment on solar wing

Abstract

This paper describes wind tunnel experimental results of wind-induced responses of a solar wing system, and investigates its aeroelastic instability using a scaled model. The model comprised 12 solar wing units, each supported by 2 cables. The gaps between units were set constant. Two sag ratios (i.e. sag/span length) were adopted. The wind speed was varied from 0 to 16m/s, and 18 different wind speeds were used. From the experiment, when the sag was 2%, a sudden increase in fluctuating displacement was found near a mean wind speed of 10m/s at a wind direction of 40° A sudden increase in fluctuating displacements was also found near a mean wind speed of 1m/s when the wind direction was larger than 60° When the sag increased to 5%, some differences among units in mean displacements were found and complicate vibration in fluctuating displacement at low wind speed was observed.

Abstract

A series of wind tunnel tests were conducted on 13 straight and helical tall buildings with various polygon crosssections, including triangle, square, pentagon, hexagon, octagon, dodecagon, and circular. The primary purpose of the present study is to investigate the effect of increasing number of side on aerodynamic characteristics for the straight and helical tall buildings. The results show that the overturning moment coefficients and the spectral values decrease with increasing number of side, showing the largest mean and fluctuating overturning moments for the straight triangle model, and the largest spectral values for the straight square model. And the effects of helical shape on the aerodynamic characteristics decrease with increasing the number of side, but large differences were found in the spectral values for the safety level design wind speed, hence the largest maximum displacement.

Abstract

This article focuses on variations of local wind forces along height levels of a tall building due to an adjacent tall building with various height and breadth ratios through huge wind tunnel experiments. It deals with the characteristics of local wind forces including root mean square local wind force coefficients, non-dimensional power spectra, and root coherences along height levels of a tall building with an adjacent tall building in critical locations. It is shown that increases of over 20% in interference factors (MIFMD, RIFMD, and RIFML) for maximum mean and root mean square base overturning moment coefficients in along- and across-wind directions occur when the adjacent building is close to the principal building. Higher and wider adjacent buildings can cause not only higher mean wind loads but also higher dynamic wind loads in along- and across-wind directions, but the critical locations of an adjacent building with various height and breadth ratios are somewhat different. However, most critical locations of an adjacent building for wind-induced wind loads are within the region (X/B, Y/B) = (1.5, 0–1.5). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
