West African countries are among the larger global millet producers but have low yields mainly due to the low quality of their marginal soils. The objectives of this work were to analyze the benefits and constraints of pearl millet production, to summarize the impact of different cropping systems and fertilization modes while proposing a holistic approach for sustainable production. The major constraints on millet yields are low rates or absence of fertilizers, unsuitable cropping systems, and the proliferation of pests and diseases. Intercropping with cowpea is a widely used cropping system in addition to crop rotation, monocropping and agroforestry systems. Microdosing is the best fertilization mode for West African smallholders. It is concluded that integrated systems (breeding new cultivars, intercropping and microdosing) in tied ridges or infiltration pit practices, sustained by the implementation of innovative approaches such as the ‘Science and Technology Backyards’ from China are a promising approach for increasing pearl millet production. In addition, policies such as land protection of the farmers and subsidies of inputs from the government and the effective involvement of farmers and extension officers are necessary in sustaining millet production in West Africa.

● Virtual joint centers on N agronomy were established between UK and China. ● Key themes were improving NUE for fertilizers, utilizing livestock manures, and soil health. ● Improved management practices and technologies were identified and assessed. ● Fertilizer emissions and improved manure management are key targets for mitigation. Two virtual joint centers for nitrogen agronomy were established between the UK and China to facilitate collaborative research aimed at improving nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in agricultural production systems and reducing losses of reactive N to the environment. Major focus areas were improving fertilizer NUE, use of livestock manures, soil health, and policy development and knowledge exchange. Improvements to fertilizer NUE included attention to application rate in the context of yield potential and economic considerations and the potential of improved practices including enhanced efficiency fertilizers, plastic film mulching and cropping design. Improved utilization of livestock manures requires knowledge of the available nutrient content, appropriate manure processing technologies and integrated nutrient management practices. Soil carbon, acidification and biodiversity were considered as important aspects of soil health. Both centers identified a range of potential actions that could be taken to improve N management, and the research conducted has highlighted the importance of developing a systems-level approach to assessing improvement in the overall efficiency of N management and avoiding unintended secondary effects from individual interventions. Within this context, the management of fertilizer emissions and livestock manure at the farm and regional scales appear to be particularly important targets for mitigation.

Aim: This research aimed to explore the serum levels of solute carrier family 7 member 11 (SLC7A11) in patients with maintenance peritoneal dialysis (MPD) and its correlation with vascular calcification (VC) and clinical results. Methods: This present prospective observational cohort study enrolled 189 patients with MPD who were undergoing regular peritoneal dialysis for over 3 months in our hospital from February 2020 to July 2022. The abdominal aortic calcification score was used to assess the VC condition of MPD patients. The serum SLC7A11, interleukin (IL)‐6, IL‐1β and C‐reactive protein levels were measured by enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Demographic and clinical statistics were collected. All patients were followed up for 1 year and the overall survival time (OS) of all patients were recorded. All data used SPSS 18.0 for statistical analyses. Results: Patients with moderate/severe calcification in MPD had a longer duration of dialysis, higher serum levels of phosphate (P) and calcium (Ca) and lower serum levels of SLC7A11. Spearman's analysis revealed a negative correlation between serum SLC7A11 levels and the levels of P, Ca and IL‐1β. Additionally, we observed an association between serum SLC7A11 levels and clinical prognosis as well as the extent of VC in MPD patients. Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that dialysis duration, SLC7A11, and P were risk factors for VC in MPD patients. Conclusion: The serum SLC7A11 levels decreased remarkably in MPD patients with moderate/severe calcification. Our design stands in stark contrast to traditional open-loop models, demonstrating superior performance by achieving a remarkable reduction in compensation error—nearly 98%. PM (particulate matter) emissions from ships are the main sources of marine atmosphere pollution. Controlling the emissions of particulate matter from ships is related to the sustainable development of the shipping industry. To reduce PM emissions from marine four-stroke diesel engines, DPFs are effective. Our results show that DPF had more than 90% capturing efficiency for both the number and mass emissions of PM, and the capturing efficiency for the accumulation mode was higher than that of the nuclear mode. DPF can also significantly reduce the chemical components of PM in marine diesel exhaust gas. The removal efficiencies for OC and EC were 89.7–91.6% and 84.8–92.8%, respectively, with each particle size range showing over 80% efficiency. SO42− was the ion with the highest content, followed by NH4+, NO3−, Na+, NO2−, and Cl−, with their reduced proportions remaining consistent with the removal efficiency of particulate matter. DPF can also effectively reduce PAH content and toxicity. The use of DPF can greatly improve the impact of ship emissions on the marine atmospheric environment. The appropriate DPF with the best performance can be selected according to the exhaust parameters and particle size distributions with different characteristics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The tension between ensuring open government information and maintaining national security is a widespread problem around the world. This study focuses on the disclosure of budgetary information and its tension with vaguely defined state secrecy requirements in the Chinese context. Through a survey of three government departments that potentially involve state secrets across 36 Chinese municipalities, we find that there exists no consensus on whether to make budgetary information public, even for the same department across different jurisdictions. In addition, departments that chose disclosure vary considerably in the scope and depth of their transparency. Without having the boundaries clarified by law, disclosure by request, as a supplemental behavior to proactive disclosure, can rarely be successful.
