The present mechanistic in vitro study aimed to investigate dose-response effects of zinc and fluoride on caries lesion remineralization and subsequent protection from demineralization. Artificial caries lesions were created using a methylcellulose acid gel system. Lesions were remineralized for 2 weeks using citrate-containing artificial saliva which was supplemented with zinc (0-153 μmol/l) and fluoride (1.1 or 52.6 μmol/l) in a 7 × 2 factorial design. Lesions were also remineralized in the absence of zinc and citrate, but in the presence of fluoride. After remineralization, all lesions were demineralized for 1 day under identical conditions. Changes in mineral distribution characteristics of caries lesions after remineralization and secondary demineralization were studied using transverse microradiography. At 1.1 μmol/l fluoride, zinc exhibited detrimental effects on remineralization in a dose-response manner and mainly by preventing remineralization near the lesion surface. At 52.6 μmol/l fluoride, zinc retarded remineralization only at the highest concentration tested. Zinc enhanced overall remineralization at 3.8-15.3 μmol/l. At 76.5 and less so at 153 μmol/l, zinc showed extensive remineralization of deeper parts within the lesions at the expense of remineralization near the surface. Citrate did not interfere with remineralization at 1.1 μmol/l fluoride, but enhanced remineralization at 52.6 μmol/l fluoride. Lesions exhibiting preferential remineralization in deeper parts showed higher mineral loss after secondary demineralization, suggesting the formation of more soluble mineral phases during remineralization. Based on the phase and composition analysis of 56 batches of samples, the present paper showed that hydrozincite, just as smithsonite, should be named as the mineralogical origin of medicinal galamina. Galamina was proved to be polymineral aggregation by electron probe micro-analysis, which was constituted by various mineral particulates, such as hydrozincite, smithsonite, zinc oxide, dolomite, etc. It is hydrozincite but not smithsonite that is the current mainstream mineral of commercial galamina. Both hydrozincite and smithsonite should be calcined to turn into zinc oxide when they were used as medicine. As a provider of medical galamina, essentially the zinc oxide, hydrozincite is appropriate.

Anecdotal evidence from forensic practitioners and studies conducted under controlled conditions have indicated that the reaction between 1,2-indanedione and the amino acids present in latent fingermark deposits is highly susceptible to ambient humidity. The addition of catalytic amounts of zinc chloride to the 1,2-indanedione working solution--usually in the order of 1:25 to 1:4 molar ratio (indanedione:zinc)--significantly improves the colour and luminescence of fingermarks treated under dry conditions but appears to have a negligible effect on fingermarks treated in humid environments. The results presented in this paper confirmed that zinc(II) ions added to the 1,2-indanedione working solution act as a Lewis acid catalyst, stabilising a key intermediate during a rate-limiting hydrolysis step. Furthermore, studying the reaction using a chromatography-grade cellulose substrate method previously reported confirmed that cellulose substrates play a major role in facilitating the indanedione-amino acid reaction by acting as a surface catalyst in the early stages of the reaction and by directing the formation of the desired luminescent product (Joullié's Pink)., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. The chronic toxicity of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NP) to Folsomia candida was determined in natural soil. To unravel the contribution of particle size and free zinc to NP toxicity, non-nano ZnO and ZnCl(2) were also tested. Zinc concentrations in pore water increased with increasing soil concentrations, with Freundlich sorption constants K(f) of 61.7, 106 and 96.4 l/kg (n = 1.50, 1.34 and 0.42) for ZnO-NP, non-nano ZnO and ZnCl(2) respectively. Survival of F. candida was not affected by ZnO-NP and non-nano ZnO at concentrations up to 6400 mg Zn/kg d.w. Reproduction was dose-dependently reduced with 28-d EC50s of 1964, 1591 and 298 mg Zn/kg d.w. for ZnO-NP, non-nano ZnO and ZnCl(2), respectively. The difference in EC50s based on measured pore water concentrations was small (7.94-16.8 mg Zn/l). Objectives: To assess the retention of o-cymen-5-ol and zinc on reconstructed human gingival tissue delivered by topical applications of toothpaste formulated with 0.1%w/w o-cymen-5-ol and 0.6%w/w zinc chloride (ZnCl2)., Methods: EpiGingival tissues were treated topically for 2 minutes with either solutions or toothpaste slurries containing o-cymen-5-ol and ZnCl2. Tissues were rinsed with water between application and the effects of repeat dosing for up to 6 occasions were investigated. Tissues were blot dried, extracted and o-cymen-5-ol and zinc were measured by HPLC and atomic absorption spectroscopy, respectively., Results: Retention of o-cymen-5-ol and zinc delivered from solutions to EpiGingival tissues showed a dose response to the concentration and to the number of applications. Significantly higher concentrations of zinc were delivered to EpiGingival tissues by toothpaste compared to equivalent doses delivered from solution. Equivalent doses of o-cymen-5-ol were delivered from toothpaste and solution. No cytotoxic effects on the EpiGingival tissues, measured by MTT viability, were detected following application of test toothpaste compared to a water control., Conclusions: Reconstructed human gingival tissue proved to be an effective model for the assessment of active retention from topically applied formulations. In the biological sciences, the use of core-shell quantum dots (QDs) has gained wide usage but analytical challenges still exist for characterizing the QD structure. The application of energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to bulk materials is relatively straightforward; however, for meaningful applications of surface science techniques to multilayer nanoparticles requires novel modifications and analysis methods. To experimentally characterize the elemental composition and distribution in CdSe/CdS/ZnS QDs, we first develop a XPS signal subtraction technique capable of separating the overlapped selenium 3s (core) and sulfur 2s (shell) peaks (both peaks have binding energies near 230 eV) with higher precision than is typically reported in the nanoparticle literature. This method is valid for any nanoparticle containing selenium and sulfur. Then we apply a correction formula to the XPS data and determine that the 2 nm stoichiometric CdSe core is surrounded by 2 CdS layers and a stoichimetric ZnS monolayer. These findings and the multiapproach methodology represent a significant advancement in the detailed surface science study of multilayer nanoparticles. In agreement with recent surprising findings, the time-of-flight secondary mass spectrometry measurements suggest that the surface sites of the QDs used in this study are primarily covered with a mixture of octadecylphosphonic acid and trioctylphophine oxide.

With controlled nanometre-sized pores and surface areas of thousands of square metres per gram, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) may have an integral role in future catalysis, filtration and sensing applications. In general, for MOF-based device fabrication, well-organized or patterned MOF growth is required, and thus conventional synthetic routes are not suitable. Moreover, to expand their applicability, the introduction of additional functionality into MOFs is desirable. Here, we explore the use of nanostructured poly-hydrate zinc phosphate (α-hopeite) microparticles as nucleation seeds for MOFs that simultaneously address all these issues. Affording spatial control of nucleation and significantly accelerating MOF growth, these α-hopeite microparticles are found to act as nucleation agents both in solution and on solid surfaces. In addition, the introduction of functional nanoparticles (metallic, semiconducting, polymeric) into these nucleating seeds translates directly to the fabrication of functional MOFs suitable for molecular size-selective applications.

The long-term speciation of Zn in contaminated soils is strongly influenced by soil pH, clay, and organic matter content as well as Zn loading. In addition, the type of Zn-bearing contaminant entering the soil may influence the subsequent formation of pedogenic Zn species, but systematic studies on such effects are currently lacking. We therefore conducted a soil incubation study in which four soils, ranging from strongly acidic to calcareous, were spiked with 2000 mg/kg Zn using either ZnO (zincite) or ZnS (sphalerite) as the contamination source. The soils were incubated under aerated conditions in moist state for up to four years. The extractability and speciation of Zn were assessed after one, two, and four years using extractions with 0.01 M CaCl(2) and Zn K-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy, respectively. After four years, more than 90% of the added ZnO were dissolved in all soils, with the fastest dissolution occurring in the acidic soils. Contamination with ZnO favored the formation of Zn-bearing layered double hydroxides (LDH), even in acidic soils, and to a lesser degree Zn-phyllosilicates and adsorbed Zn species. This was explained by locally elevated pH and high Zn concentrations around dissolving ZnO particles. Except for the calcareous soil, ZnS dissolved more slowly than ZnO, reaching only 26 to 75% of the added ZnS after four years. ZnS dissolved more slowly in the two acidic soils than in the near-neutral and the calcareous soil. Also, the resulting Zn speciation was markedly different between these two pairs of soils: Whereas Zn bound to hydroxy-interlayered clay minerals (HIM) and octahedrally coordinated Zn sorption complexes prevailed in the two acidic soils, Zn speciation in the neutral and the calcareous soil was dominated by Zn-LDH and tetrahedrally coordinated inner-sphere Zn complexes. Our results show that the type of Zn-bearing contaminant phase can have a significant influence on the formation of pedogenic Zn species in soils. Important factors include the rate of Zn release from the contaminant phases and effects of the contaminant phase on bulk soil properties and on local chemical conditions around weathering contaminant particles.

The relative transparency of Daphnia magna (daphnia) and the unique optical properties of quantum dots (QDs) were paired to study the accumulation potential and surface coating effects on uptake of amphiphilic polymer coated CdSe/ZnS QDs. Fluorescence confocal laser scanning microscopy was used to visualize and spectrally distinguish QDs from competing autofluorescent signals arising from the daphnia themselves and their food sources. QDs were found to accumulate within the digestive tracts of daphnia, as well as, in some cases, adhere to the carapace, antennae, and thoracic appendages. After 48 h of gut clearance with and without feeding, QD fluorescence signal was still apparent in the digestive tracts of daphnia, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) measurements confirmed that 36-53% of the initial uptake was retained. As surface charge and pegylation can influence the uptake of nanoparticles, uptake of QDs coated with two different amphililic polymers and their polyethylene glycol (PEG) coated counterparts was also examined. Fluorescence microscopy and ICP-MS measurements revealed differences in uptake after 24 h of exposure which were attributed to particle surface coating and stability.

A risk assessment report (RAR) on zinc and zinc compounds has recently been prepared in the framework of the European Union (EU) Council Regulation 793/93/EEC on Existing Chemicals. The EU Scientific Committee on Human and Environmental Risks (SCHER) has, however, expressed some fundamental, science-based concerns about the approach followed and the conclusions. The main objective of the present study was to assess the potential environmental risks associated with current use patterns of Zn in nine EU river basins in Germany, France and Belgium, thereby using more advanced methodologies which are largely in line with the recommendations made by SCHER. This included (i) avoiding working with measured Zn concentrations from monitoring stations that were potentially influenced by point sources and/or historical contamination, (ii) the full bioavailability normalization of all chronic ecotoxicity data to river basin specific physico-chemistry using biotic ligand models (BLM), prior to deriving predicted no effect concentrations (PNEC) with the species sensitivity distribution (SSD) approach, and (iii) the use of a probabilistic framework for risk characterization. Further, a total risk approach instead of an added risk approach was used, and the PNEC was equated to the HC5-50 without an additional assessment factor. Based on monitoring data we estimated predicted environmental concentrations (PEC) for the different EU river basins between 1.3 and 14.6 microg dissolved Zn/L. PNEC values varied between 22.1 and 46.1 microg dissolved Zn/L. This resulted in deterministic risk characterization ratios (RCR) that were below 1 in all river basins, suggesting that there is no deterministic regional risk associated with current use patterns of Zn in these river basins. With the probabilistic approach we identified rather limited risks, i.e., between <0.4 and 18.3%. When the EU RAR approach was applied to the same monitoring datasets, deterministic risks were found in different river basins. A detailed analysis showed that this different deterministic conclusion of risk is mainly due to the fact that the EU RAR (i) uses an additional assessment factor of 2 to derive the PNEC and (ii) uses a more conservative approach for implementing bioavailability (BioF approach). We argue that the larger conservatism in the EU RAR mainly originates from decisions made to deal in a pragmatic way with (i) uncertainty related to the across-species extrapolation of BLMs and (ii) the relatively high sensitivity of some multi-species toxicity studies.

Citrate complexes of Mn and Fe, and potentially those of Cu and Zn, are considered as important low molecular mass species in human serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). For example, Mn is supposed to enter the brain under excess exposure as Mn-citrate leading to neurotoxic effects. Mn-citrate has been characterised in human CSF using chromatography and electrophoresis online with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, but not yet with molecular mass spectrometry. Therefore, this study explores the potential of electrospray ionisation (ESI) with selected reaction monitoring (SRM) for the detection of metal-citrate complexes, in particular Mn-citrate. The collision-induced dissociation of precursor ions with various metal:citrate stoichiometries was studied for Mn-citrate, Fe-citrate, Cu-citrate and Zn-citrate. High selectivity was achieved for Mn(II)-citrate even in respect to Fe(III)-citrate which forms isobaric precursor ions. The limit of detection for Mn-citrate was estimated to be around 250 microg L(-1) (referring to the total Mn content in the standard) using flow injection. The sensitivity was sufficient for the determination of Mn-citrate in standard solutions and in an extract of an Mn-citrate-containing supplement. An improved ESI source design is expected to reduce the limits of detection significantly. Cationic multifluorescent quantum dot liposomes (QD-Ls) have been prepared with both hydrophobic and hydrophilic CdSe/ZnS quantum dots by reverse phase evaporation. QD incorporation was confirmed by fluorescence and confocal microscopy. Incorporation did not affect QD photoactivity or damage bilayer or liposome structure. Cell uptake was examined in human hepatocellular carcinoma cells (HuH-7) using cationic and zwitterionic QD-Ls. Cationic QD-Ls were stable in vitro and exhibited high uptake, while zwitterionic QD-Ls aggregated and exhibited low uptake. Given that liposomes are established and versatile platforms for creating cell-targeting therapeutic agents, multifluorescent QD-Ls may offer advanced techniques for imaging hydrophobic and hydrophilic domains simultaneously. If coupled with an encapsulated drug, QD-Ls could be multifunctional and provide imaging, detection, and drug delivery in a single assembly.

An efficiency of (44+/-2)% is achieved for samples placed directly on a 5 in diameter ZnS scintillator plate, placed on top of a 5 in photomultiplier in a light-tight pot. Background count rate is as low as (9+/-3)h(-1), equivalent to (5+/-2)mBq on 95 cm(2) for a second scintillator face to face or for a high-purity copper disk. Results are displayed continuously and printed on-line. An automatic repetition of measurements permits a measurement of activity as a function of time. From such a function radionuclides such as radon and its decay products may be distinguished from other radionuclides by their half-life in a technically simpler way than by their energy.

This study reports an investigation of the effect of the anode surface area on the performance of a single chamber microbial fuel cell (SCMFC) based biosensor for measuring the organic content of wastewater. A packed bed of graphite granules was used as the anode. The surface area of the anode was changed by altering the granule bed thickness (0.3 cm and 1 cm). The anode surface area was found to play a role in the dynamic response of the system. For a granule bed thickness of 1 cm and with an external resistance of 500 Omega, the response time (defined as the time required to achieve 95% of the steady-state current) was reduced by approximately 65% in comparison to a SCMFC biosensor with a carbon cloth anode.

A normal mode analysis was made for zinc caprate with using the Wilson GF matrix method. Based on the analysis and infrared spectra, structural transition behavior of zinc caprate was discussed.

We investigated the influence of acclimation on results of in situ bioassays with cutthroat trout in metal-contaminated streams. Cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki) were held for 21 days (1) in live containers at a reference or "clean" site having dissolved metals near detection limits (0.01 microg/L cadmium [Cd] and 2.8 microg/L zinc [Zn]; hardness 32 mg/L as CaCO(3)) and (2) at a site in a mining-impacted watershed having moderately increased metals (0.07 microg/L Cd and 38 to 40 microg/L Zn; hardness 50 mg/L as CaCO(3)). The 96-hour survival of each treatment group was then tested in situ at five sites from September 5 to 9, 2002, and each group exhibited a range of metal concentrations (0.44 to 39 microg/L arsenic [As], 0.01 to 2.2 microg/L Cd, and 0.49 to 856 microg/L Zn). Survival was 100% at three sites for both treatments. However, a higher percentage of metal-acclimated fish survived at the site with the second highest concentrations of Cd and Zn (0.90 and 238 microg/L, respectively) compared with fish acclimated at the reference site (100% vs. 55%, respectively). Survival was 65% for acclimated fish and 0% for metal-naïve fish at the site with the largest metal concentrations (2.2 microg/L Cd and 856 microg/L Zn). Water collected from the site with the largest concentrations of dissolved metals (on October 30, 2002) was used in a laboratory serial dilution to determine 96-hour LC(50) values. The 96-hour LC(50) estimates of naïve fish during the in situ and laboratory experiments were similar (0.60 mug Cd/L and 226 microg Zn/L for in situ and 0.64 microg Cd/L and 201 microg Zn/L for laboratory serial dilutions). However, mortality of naïve cutthroat trout tested under laboratory conditions was more rapid in dilutions of 100%, 75%, and 38% site water than in situ experiments.

The applicability of spectrochemical analysis of minute amounts of powder samples was investigated using an ultraviolet Nd-YAG laser (355 nm) and low-pressure ambient air. A large variety of chemical powder samples of different composition were employed in the experiment. These included a mixture of copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate, zinc sulfide, and chromium(III) sulfate n-hydrate powders, baby powder, cosmetic powders, gold films, zinc supplement tablet, and muds and soils from different areas. The powder samples were prepared by pulverizing the original samples to an average size of around 30 microm in order to trap them in the tiny micro holes created on the surface of the quartz subtarget. It was demonstrated that in all cases studied, good quality spectra were obtained with low background, free from undesirable contamination by the subtarget elements and featuring ppm sensitivity. A further measurement revealed a linear calibration curve with zero intercept. These results clearly show the potential application of this technique for practical qualitative and quantitative spectrochemical analysis of powder samples in various fields of study and investigation.

A biosensor system for detection of pathogens was developed by using CdSe/ZnS core/shell dendron nanocrystals with high efficiency and stability as fluorescence labels and a flowing chamber with a microporous immunofilter. The antibody-immobilized immunofilter captured the targeted pathogens, Escherichia coli O157:H7 as an example for bacteria and hepatitis B being a model system for viruses. The CdSe/ZnS core/shell dendron nanocrystals were conjugated with the corresponding antibodies and then passed through the microporous membrane where they attached to the membrane-antigen-antibody. The efficient and stable photoluminescence (PL) of the CdSe/ZnS nanocrystals on the formed "sandwich" structure complexes (membrane-antigen-antibody conjugated with the nanocrystals) was used as the detection means. The effects of the pore size of the membranes, buffer pH, and assay time on the detection of E. coli O157:H7 were investigated and optimized. The detectable level of this new system was as low as 2.3 CFU/mL for E. coli O157:H7 and 5 ng/mL for hepatitis B surface Ag (HBsAg). The assay time was shortened to 30 min without any enrichment and incubation.

Metal concentration of plants growing on contaminated soils among other factors may depend on changes in the hydrological regime of the soil. Foliar and stem metal concentrations in Salix cinerea (grey sallow) were measured in 2 consecutive growing seasons on a submerged sediment-derived soil that underwent gradual terrestrialisation. Foliar and stem cutting concentrations for Cd, Zn and Mn increased on plots that were submerged during the first year, but emerged in the second year of monitoring. The litter layer was sampled under the shrubs of a plot with a recent abrupt change in hydrological regime and on the reference plot. It was separated in three size fractions through sieving. Analysis of the litter fractions suggested that Cd and Zn concentrations remained constant during fragmentation. However, Cr, Cu, Ni and Pb concentrations increased, which was attributed to adhesion of mineral soil particles on the fine fraction. After correction for the metal content in the mineral fraction, an increase in Cd, Mn and Cu concentration during fragmentation of the organic part of the litter layer was observed for the polluted plot. Net litter layer decomposition rate was low, which may indicate low colonisation by the decomposing community. Terrestrialisation resulted in higher Cd, Mn and Zn uptake by willows. The deviant litter layer metal concentrations for Cd, Zn and Mn and low decomposition rate must be further monitored. Feasibility of measures aiming at re-establishing wetland conditions for the dredged sediment landfill must be considered.

We examined zinc (Zn) metabolism in rats given diets containing excess calcium (Ca). Rats were given phytate-free diet containing 5 g Ca/kg (control), 12.5 g Ca/kg, or 25 g Ca/kg for 4 wk in Experiment 1. The dietary treatment did not affect Zn concentration in the plasma, testis, kidney, spleen and liver; however, Zn concentration in the femur and its cortex was significantly higher in rats given diet containing 25 g Ca/kg than in other rats. Rats were given phytate-free diet containing 5 g Ca /kg or 25 g Ca /kg for 4 wk in Experiment 2. After 12-h food deprivation, rats were given a diet extrinsically labeled by 67Zn with dysprosium as a fecal marker for 4 h. Feces were collected from 1 d before administration of the labeled diet to 5 d after administration. Excess Ca did not affect the true absorption of Zn and its endogenous excretion but increased femoral Zn. These results suggest that excess Ca improves Zn bioavailability without affecting Zn absorption when diets do not contain phytate.

Purpose: Current commercial guided bone regeneration membranes are susceptible to bacterial colonization, leading to premature membrane degradation. The purpose of this research is to modify current resorbable guided bone regeneration membranes with antibacterial property by mineralizing with zinc phosphate., Materials: Resolut Adapt LT (Gore-Tex; W.L. Gore & Associates, Inc., Flagstaff, AZ), composed of copolymer PGA/TMC, and BioMend Extend (Zimmer Dental, Carlsbad, CA), composed of bovine type 1 collagen, were used. The membranes were mineralized with zinc phosphate. The mineralized membranes were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, inductive coupled plasma, and thermogravimetry. Antibacterial property of zinc phosphate mineralized and nonmineralized membranes were determined using Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans standard strain ATCC 29522., Results: Scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive system, and Fourier transform infrared identified zinc phosphate in the zinc phosphate mineralized membranes. Zinc phosphate mineralized membranes showed significant reduction in bacterial colony, forming units compared to nonmineralized membranes., Conclusion: Results of this study suggest that the use of zinc phosphate mineralized membranes can inhibit oral bacterial colonization and prevent inflammation due to membrane exposure. This antibacterial property may help achieve the optimal goal of guided bone regeneration.

The purpose of this paper reported the zinc species in the highly contaminated soils from metallurgical area around Erh-Jen River in the southern of Taiwan. FTIR and XPS were used to investigate the zinc species in the contaminated soils. Through a FTIR analysis, appreciable of zinc bound by organic matter was found and their bonding structure consisted of antisymmetric and symmetric stretchings, Zn-HSsym and Zn-HSasym. With XPS analysis, the Angstrom scale depth scan was surveyed for investigation the zinc speciation. No signal of zinc was detected in the depth of 900A for the larger particle contaminated soils whereas the detectable signal of zinc was determined in the XPS experiment. With further regression and fitting results, the major zinc species presented in the surface of larger and fine particle contaminated soils consisted of reductive and oxidative zinc species. In the deeper depth of contaminated soils, an inverse spinel zinc ferrite was found in the case of larger particle soil. No inverse spinel zinc ferrite was detected in the case of fine particle soil and could be attributed to the relatively small particle size.

A novel synthesis method is presented for the preparation of eco-friendly, doped semiconductor nanocrystals encapsulated within oxide-shells, both formed sequentially from a single-source solid-precursor. Highly luminescent ZnS nanoparticles, in situ doped with Cu(+)-Al3+ pairs and encapsulated with ZnO shells are prepared by the thermal decomposition of a solid-precursor compound, zinc sulfato-thiourea-oxyhydroxide, showing layered crystal structure. The precursor compound is prepared by an aqueous wet-chemical reaction involving necessary chemical reagents required for the precipitation, doping and inorganic surface capping of the nanoparticles. The elemental analysis (C, H, N, S, O, Zn), quantitative estimation of different chemical groups (SO4(2-) and NH4(-)) and infrared studies suggested that the precursor compound is formed by the intercalation of thiourea, and/or its derivatives thiocarbamate (CSNH2(-)), dithiocarbamate (CS2NH2(-)), etc., and ammonia into the gallery space of zinc-sulfato-oxyhydroxide corbel where the Zn(II) ions are both in the octahedral as well as tetrahedral coordination in the ratio 3 : 2 and the dopant ions are incorporated within octahedral voids. The powder X-ray diffraction of precursor compound shows high intensity basal reflection corresponding to the large lattice-plane spacing of d = 11.23 angstroms and the Rietveld analysis suggested orthorhombic structure with a = 9.71 angstroms, b = 12.48 angstroms, c = 26.43 angstroms, and beta = 90 degrees. Transmission electron microscopy studies show the presence of micrometer sized acicular monocrystallites with prismatic platy morphology. Controlled thermolysis of the solid-precursor at 70-110 degrees C leads to the collapse of layered structure due to the hydrolysis of interlayer thiourea molecules or its derivatives and the S2- ions liberated thereby reacts with the tetrahedral Zn(II) atoms leading to the precipitation of ZnS nanoparticles at the gallery space. During this process, the dopant ions situated at octahedral voids gets incorporated into the nano-ZnS lattice and results in bright photoluminescence. On further heat treatment above 1100 degrees C, the corbel zinc-oxyhydroxide sheets undergo dehydroxylation to form ZnO which eventually encapsulates the ZnS nanoparticles at the gallery leading to significant enhancement in the luminescence quantum efficiency, up to approximately 22%. The emission color of thus formed nano-ZnS/micro-ZnO composites could be tuned over wide spectral ranges from 480 to 618 nm and the spectral changes are attributed to a number of factors including lattice defects, Cu(+)-Al3+ dopant-pairs and iso-electronic oxygen in nano-ZnS and oxygen-vacancy or -interstitial centers in non-stoichiometric ZnO.

HPLC methods were developed and validated for potential extractables [zinc dithiocarbamate, 2,6-di-tert-butyl-para-cresol (BHT), octylated diphenylamine antioxidant, sulfur, pentylphenol, and tetrakis(methylene(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyhydro cinnamate))methane] from commercial elastomeric stoppers in a complex surfactant matrix. These stoppers were proposed to be part of the container-closure system for experimental formulations containing the surfactant, polyoxyethylated Castor oil (USP/NF) (POE Castor oil) and ethanol. The presence of POE Castor oil in the formulation posed unique challenges to the development and validation of the HPLC methods. POE Castor oil, also known as Cremophor, is a viscous and complex solubilizing agent with a number of uncharacterized fractions. Hence the goal was to identify HPLC conditions that would be suitable for the separation, detection, and quantitation of the potential stopper extractables in the presence of such a complex drug product matrix. A number of experiments were performed to evaluate the effects of different columns, mobile phase composition, injection volume, and gradient profile on the separation and detection of the potential stopper extractables. The quantitation limits of these stopper extractables are between 1 and 10 ppm. The methods demonstrate good linearity, acceptable accuracy, and precision.

The aim of the paper was to assess the minerals contents in daily food rations of low physically active women. The data on minerals intake were collected using 24-hour recall and diet history questionnaire. The intake of Ca, Fe, K, Zn and Mg was very low; Ca--47.9% of recommended level, Fe--65% of recommended level, K, Zn and Mg from 55% to 68% of recommended level. The study showed unsatisfactory low consumption of milk and dairy products, cereal products, vegetables and fruits, which are rich source of minerals.

We demonstrate the determination of Young's modulus of nanowires or nanotubes via a new approach, that is, force-deflection spectroscopy (FDS). An atomic force microscope is used to measure force versus deflection (F-D) curves of nanofilaments that bridge a trench patterned in a Si substrate. The FD data are then fit to the Euler-Bernoulli equation to determine Young's modulus. Our approach provides a generic platform from which to study the mechanical and piezoelectric properties of a variety of materials at the nanoscale level. Young's modulus measurements on ZnS (wurtzite) nanowires are presented to demonstrate this technique. We find that the Young's modulus for rectangular cross section ZnS nanobelts is 52 +/- 7.0 GPa, about 30% smaller than that reported for the bulk.

The effect of the consecutive annual additions of pig slurry at rates of 0 (control), 90 and 150 m3 ha(-1) yr(-1) after a 7-year period on the Cu(II) and Zn(II) binding behavior of soil HAs was investigated in a field experiment. A fluorescence titration method and a single site model were used for determining metal ion complexing capacities and stability constants of metal ion complexes of HAs isolated from pig slurry and unamended and amended soils. With respect to control soil HA, pig-slurry HA featured much smaller Cu(II) and Zn(II) binding capacities and stability constants. Pig-slurry application to soil decreased Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexing capacities and binding affinities of soil HA. These effects increased with increasing the rate per year of PS application to soil, and are expected to have a large impact on bioavailability, mobilization, and transport of Cu(II) and Zn(II) ions in pig slurry-amended soils.

There are two mass diffusion processes regarding the vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) growth of nanostructures: one is inside the catalyst droplet toward the liquid-solid interface; the other is along the side surface planes of the growing nanostructures. In this letter, microscale, modulated mass diffusion scenarios are exhibited through the synthesis of two types of ZnS nanostructures in an Au-catalyzed VLS process: periodically twinned nanowires originated from periodical fluctuation between diffusion rate inside the catalytic droplet and the growth rate on the liquid-solid interface; the formation of asymmetrically polytypic nanobelts is related to one certain side surface bounded by high surface-energy plane, which serves as a preferential diffusion direction of reactant adatoms. The results may have important impact on the understanding of the physical and chemical process of the VLS mechanism. These longitudinally and latitudinally tunable crystalline structures enrich the family of one-dimensional nano-building blocks, and may find potential applications in nanotechnology.

Nanocrystals in the size range 12-21 nm of a model binary ionic material in the wurtzite (B4) structure were constructed with morphologies which minimize the surface energy. These were then embedded in a pressurization medium, consisting of a binary Lennard-Jones-type fluid and progressively pressurized in "constant pressure" molecular dynamics simulation runs. Phase transitions to the rocksalt (B1) phase were confirmed by examining calculated powder diffraction patterns, which show the same changes in features as seen for experimental systems. By directly observing the atomic trajectories throughout the duration of the transition the local mechanism has been identified. The transition proceeds via a trigonal bipyramidal intermediate, denoted as the h-MgO structure. It is initiated by a single nucleation event at a [1120]B4 surface with subsequent growth of the B1 region throughout the remainder of the nanocrystal. The consequences of this mechanism for the particle shape of the product phase are detailed and contrasted with those previously found for initially zincblende (B3) structured nanoparticles, using the same interaction potential. The observed transition pressures are elevated relative to the thermodynamically predicted pressure for the bulk, but there is no observable system size effect on the transition pressure across the size range of nanocrystals investigated.

Nanometer-sized L-cysteine-capped ZnS particles as a fluorescence probe were synthesized, and the effect of proteins on the fluorescence intensity has been investigated. With deltalambda = 190 nm, the maximum and constant synchronous fluorescence enhancement was produced at 268.0 nm and pH 5.12 in the presence of proteins. A highly sensitive synchronous fluorescence method for the rapid determination of proteins was developed. Under optimum conditions, the calibration curve was linear over the range 0.05-6.0 microg x mL(-1) for human serum albumin (HSA), and 0.05-8.0 microg x mL(-1) for gamma-globulin (gamma-G), respectively. The relative standard deviations of seven measurements were 1.90% for 1.0 microg x mL(-1) HSA, and 1.65% for 1.0 microg mL(-1) gamma-G.

Objective: Zinc deficiency is a problem world-wide. Zinc and insulin are intimately related, and a reduced zinc intake may affect glucose metabolism. The present study investigates how subclinical zinc deficiency in rats affects glucose metabolism and zinc distribution in the pancreas., Methods: Glucose metabolism was evaluated by blood-glucose, serum insulin, homeostasis model assessment (HOMA), and intraperitoneal glucose tolerance tests. Immersion zinc-sulphide autometallography (iZnSAMG) was used to describe zinc ion distribution., Results: After 4 weeks on a zinc deficient diet (<10 ppm), the zinc deficient rats had a slightly impaired glucose metabolism characterized by significantly increased blood-glucose levels. No differences in serum insulin, insulin resistance, beta-cell function were observed. The zinc deficient rats had significantly decreased serum zinc without any clinical signs of zinc deficiency. Zinc ion staining intensity of the islets of Langerhans was unaffected by the zinc deficiency. In contrast, the acinar cells in the exocrine pancreas appeared depleted of iZnSAMG grains in the zinc deficient rats when compared with their controls. Though statistically non-significant, a reduction in total zinc of the pancreas was found., Conclusions: The present findings suggest that the endocrine pancreas is able to compensate for the subclinical zinc deficiency as it maintains an adequate zinc ion level in the secretory vesicles for insulin storage. The exocrine pancreas lacks this ability; it exhibits decreased levels of zinc ion staining as a consequence of 4 weeks of reduced zinc intake.

Electroconvulsive seizures (ECS), one of the most effective treatments of depression, induce mossy fiber sprouting (when assayed by means of synaptic zinc method), and this indicates an increase in the synaptic zinc level in the hippocampus following such therapy. The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of acute and chronic zinc hydroaspartate administration on the synaptic and total zinc level in the rat hippocampus. We used two methods of zinc determination: (1) zinc-selenium method, which images the pool of synaptic zinc, and (2) flame atomic absorption spectrometry, which assays the total concentration of zinc. Our results indicate that chronic (14 x 65 mg/kg), but not acute, zinc hydroaspartate administration intraperitoneally (i.p.) increases the pool of synaptic zinc in the majority of rat hippocampal layers (by 72-190%), except for the stratum moleculare and stratum radiatum CA, and perforant path DG. On the other hand, no changes were found in total hippocampal zinc level, measured by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. These data suggest that chronic zinc treatment increases the pool of synaptic zinc in the hippocampus, and this effect is similar to that observed following chronic ECS treatment. The measurement of zinc concentration in the whole hippocampus by the flame atomic absorption spectrometry method is not sensitive enough to detect such subtle alteration.

Combined small-angle and high energy wide-angle X-ray scattering measurements of nanoparticle size and structure permit interior strain and disorder to be observed directly in the real-space pair distribution function (PDF). PDF analysis showed that samples of ZnS nanoparticles with similar mean diameters (3.2-3.6 nm) but synthesized and treated with different low-temperature procedures possess a dramatic range of interior disorder. We used Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy to detect the surface species and the nature of surface chemical interactions. Our results suggest that there is a direct correlation between the strength of surface-ligand interactions and interior crystallinity.

The environmental risk assessment of metals in the soil compartment is based mainly on tests performed in Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) artificial soil, but ecologically, the use of natural soils would be more relevant. In this contribution, the reproduction and growth of three standard species (an earthworm, a collembolan, and a dicotyledonous plant, respectively) was evaluated in nine natural soils (covering a wide range of pH values, organic matter content, texture, and so on) and in OECD artificial soil. Afterward, the effects of the model chemical zinc nitrate were assessed in all soils that were identified as being suitable for these species. The test results indicate that the toxicity of zinc nitrate can be higher by a factor of approximately four compared to artificial soil for invertebrates (earthworms and collembolans), whereas plants are only slightly more sensitive in some natural soils than in artificial soil. When comparing the different endpoints, it could be confirmed that the median effective concentration (EC50) is the most robust compared to the highly uncertain 10% effective concentration. Decreasing toxicity of zinc nitrate to collembolans was significantly correlated with an increase in soil pH but not with cation exchange capacity (CEC) or organic carbon (OC) content. No significant correlation was found between the toxicity of zinc nitrate to earthworms or plants and soil pH, CEC, or OC content. Possible consequences of the results are discussed, such as the testing of natural soils in addition to the OECD artificial soil or the inclusion of an additional safety factor to use the EC50 in current risk assessment schemes focusing on no-observed-effect concentrations.

Zinc is an essential trace element in the central nervous system and is located in three distinct pools: free zinc, vesicular zinc and protein-bound zinc. Zinc may serve as an endogenous neuromodulator and has been associated with neuropathologies. This study was undertaken to determine whether levels of vesicular zinc in neuronal terminals would decrease in response to the dopaminergic neurotoxin 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium ion (MPP+). Adult male C-57 black mice were injected with MPP+ (0.72 mg/kg) into their right lateral ventricle. All animals were killed at 1, 2, 24 h and 7 days after MPP+ or saline administration. The brains were stained for zinc sulfides and the density of zinc-positive terminal fields was evaluated after MPP+ administration. The relative optical density analysis of zinc-positive terminal fields showed significant decreases in the striatum at 1, 2 and 24 h (24, 18 and 14%, respectively, versus control) and ventricular epithelium (1, 2, 24 h and 7 days). The hippocampus showed increase in the stratum oriens and stratum radiatum at different times. MPP+ administration reduced dopamine levels at 24h and 7 days (36 and 40%, respectively, versus control) as a result of the neurotoxic action of MPP+. The decrease of zinc-positive neuronal terminal fields in the striatum after MPP+ administration is most likely due to a neuronal release of vesicular zinc in response to its dopaminergic neurotoxicity.

The recombination luminescence is in nature a bimolecular process but, the decay rule may be changing from that of mono-molecular to bimolecular rule, i.e., from exponential to hyperbolic rule, depending on the behavior of conduction electrons. This behavior is represented by relative rate of recombination with ionized centers to that of capture by traps. This relative rate depends partly on the intrinsic parameters of the specified materials, and partly on the concentration of conduction electrons supplied by traps. Each point of the TL curve is related to the material parameters and the release of electrons from traps. The ratio of relative rate of recombination to that of capture gamma(epsilon) = sigma0(n0)/sigma(nu - n) involves the parameter epsilon. They are inseparable and must be determined at the same time. In the present report, starting from the same sample ZnS:Cu, Co which has only one peak in its TL(i. e., only one kind of luminescent center and only one kind of traps), and the experimental value of sigma/sigma0 = 0.005, the authors use thermo-luminescence kinetics models and some mathematic tools to exactly estimate the ratio sigma0(n0)/sigma(nu) and the trap depth epsilon simultaneously from the glow curve. The authors found that sigma0(n0)/sigma(nu) = -2.6 and epsilon = 0.86 eV.

There is an ongoing interest on the photoluminescence (PL) and related properties of doped nano ZnS since there is a large change in their PL properties with particle size reduction. Such PL properties are theoretically predicted to be much enhanced with ZnS particle sizes below the Bohr radius, i.e., in ZnS for particle sizes less than 5 nm or so. We start this discussion by first suggesting some nanoparticle formation mechanisms. The type of capping mechanism used dictates the temporal PL stability under different ambient conditions and other post-processing device requirements. We then describe results on PL of our different doped nanocrystalline ZnS and compare our interpretation of results with those available in literature. We have used 3-D plots featuring the effect of different excitation wavelengths on the PL emission profile and its intensity variation on nanocrystalline ZnS doped with different ions. Reported results and our own data suggests that the nanoparticle formation leads to drastic change in PL emission peaks-such that they are often greatly different from those of similar bulk samples. These features are seen in cases where PL is due to electron recombination from dopant and codopant sites, e.g., during Cu and Ag doping. Such results are explained due to greatly modified band structure with nanoparticle formation and bandgap enhancement where dopant and codopant levels have also greatly changed. However, in nanocrystalline samples where the PL mechanism is due to intraion transitions of dopants (e.g., in Mn doping), the luminescence properties remain similar to those of the bulk--this is because as long as the host material and its related crystal field is the same, such electron transition levels remain similar.

Efficient green emission from ZnMgS:Mn2+ nanoparticles prepared by co-doping Mg2+ and Mn2+ ions into ZnS lattices has been observed. The synthesis is carried out in aqueous solution, followed by a post-annealing process, thus showing the features of less complexity, low cost, and easy incorporation of dopants. In comparison with the emission of ZnS:Mn2+ nanoparticles, which is located generally around 590 nm, the photoluminescence of ZnMgS:Mn2+ nanoparticles is blue-shifted by 14 nm in wavelength, leading to the enhanced green emission. The X-ray diffraction, electron spin resonance, and pressure dependent photoluminescence measurements suggest that the change of the crystal field caused by Mg2+ ionic doping and the lower symmetry in the nanoparticles may account for the blue-shift of the photoluminescence. The ZnMgS:Mn2+ nanoparticles with 1% Mn2+ doping exhibit the strongest luminescence, which could potentially meet the requirements for the construction of green light emitting diodes.

Visually striking nanoflowers composed of ZnS:Mn2+ nanoparticles are prepared and characterized. The configurations of these fractal structures are very sensitive to both the pH values of the particle solutions from which they are precipitated and the substrates on which they are deposited. At pH 2.2, the fractal structures resemble trees without leaves; at pH 7.7, they are tree-like with four arms and at pH 11.0 they resemble trees with six arms. High resolution transmission microscopy reveals that the nanoflowers are composed of ZnS:Mn2+ nanoparticles of 2-5 nm in size. X-ray photoelectron spectral data indicate that the sample compositions of nitrogen, chlorine, and sulfur vary gradually with pH values of the solutions. These changes may have an impact on both the fractal configuration and the luminescence properties. The emission spectra of the particle solutions at pH values of 2.2 and 11.0 are similar with the emission maximum at 475 nm. As the pH value approaches 7.7, the emission spectral maximum shifts to longer wavelengths. At a pH value of 7.7, the emission peak wavelength is the reddest, 520 nm. The emission peak of the nanoflowers at a pH value of 9.3 is 510 nm, while the emission spectrum of the nanoflowers at 5.2 has two peaks at 500 nm and 440 nm, respectively. These blue-green emissions are attributed to defects and are the dominant luminescence from the nanoflowers. The emission from Mn2+ dopant is only observed in the delayed spectra of the fractal solid samples.

Inorganic-organic hybrid nanostructures doped with magnetic ions have been synthesized via substitution of Zn by Co or Fe in the ZnSe(L)0.5 systems under solvothermal conditions. These dilute magnetic semiconductors (DMS), Zn(1-x)MxSe(L)0.5 (M = Co, Fe; L = ethylenediamine or en, 1,3-propanediamine or pda; 0 < x < 1), are composed of perfectly ordered Zn(1-x)MxSe semiconductor monolayers interconnected by organic diamine molecules. The large blue shifts in their optical absorption edges (approximately 1.1-1.5 eV) compared to the bulk ZnSe are a direct result of a very strong quantum confinement effect (QCE). Magnetic studies show that there exist antiferromagnetic interactions between the Co or Fe centers in the structures and the interaction is enhanced as the doping concentration increases. The introduction of Fe or Co to hybrid inorganic-organic semiconductors provides a promising route to generate materials that combine the advantageous features of inorganic, organic, and magnetic functionalities in a single structure.

Recent studies on the speciation of Zn in contaminated soils confirmed the formation of Zn-layered double hydroxide (LDH) and Zn-phyllosilicate phases. However, no information on the kinetics of the formation of those phases under field conditions is currently available. In the present study, the transformation of Zn in a field soil artificially contaminated with ZnO containing filter dust from a brass foundry was monitored during 4 years using extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. Soil sections were studied by micro-X-ray fluorescence (micro-XRF) and micro-EXAFS spectroscopy. EXAFS spectra were analyzed by principal component analysis (PCA) and linear combination fitting (LCF). The results show that ZnO dissolved within 9 months and that half of the total Zn reprecipitated. The precipitate was mainly of the Zn-LDH type (>75%). Only a minor fraction (<25%) may be of Zn-phyllosilicate type. The remaining Zn was adsorbed to soil organic and inorganic particles. No significant changes in Zn speciation occurred from 9 to 47 months after the contamination. Thermodynamic calculations show that both Zn-LDH and Zn-phyllosilicate may form in the presence of ZnO but that the formation of Zn-phyllosilicate would be thermodynamically favored. Thus, the dominance of Zn-LDH found by spectroscopy suggests that the formation of the Zn precipitates was not solely controlled bythermodynamics but also contained a kinetic component. The rate-limiting step could be the supply of Al and Si from soil minerals to the Zn-rich solutions around dissolving ZnO grains.

Energy transfer dynamics in Mn2+-doped ZnSe nanoparticles have been studied by monitoring the photoluminescence using time-integrated and time-resolved spectroscopic techniques. Upon Mn2+ doping, static photoluminescence (PL) spectra show that the bandedge excitonic state is quenched and the characteristic Mn2+ emission appears at 584 nm. Picosecond PL kinetics and femtosecond transient absorption studies have both found that the Mn2+ doping substantially shortens the average lifetimes of the bandedge excitonic state as well as shallow trap states. The energy transfer from ZnSe to Mn2+ likely follows two mechanisms, one mediated through trap states and another without.

We investigate the magnetic properties of two typical II-VI semiconducting nanocrystals, namely, ZnS and ZnO, doped with various concentrations of a transition metal ion, Mn. A wide range of dopant concentrations was explored without changing the size of the nanocrystal, thereby allowing us to study the concentration dependence of various properties independent of any size variation of the host. However, only small doping concentrations could be realized in each case. All the studies were thus carried out with ZnS and ZnO nanocrystals with their respective average sizes fixed at about 1.6 and 4.7 nm. We show that the magnetic properties of such doped systems, remaining paramagnetic down to the lowest temperature (<3 K), can provide important and accurate information concerning the dopant level in such samples.

ZnS: Mn2+ nanocrystals embedded in Pyrex glasses were spectrally studied using EPR and photoluminescence techniques. Photoluminescence (PL) and excitation (PLE) spectra revealed that manganese impurities can be classified as two types of luminescent centers, i.e., occupying substitutional sites (Mn2+)sub or interstitial sites (Mn2+)int. Three types of manganese sites of (Mn2+)sub, (Mn2+)int, and Mn clusters were identified by the EPR spectra. An increase of the g1 factor and hyperfine structure (HFS) constant with decreasing sizes of nanocrystals was observed. The increase was attributed to a hybridization of the s-p state of ZnS and the d state of manganese ions enhanced by quantum confinement effects or surface states.

Nanoengineered fluorescent response is reported from semiconductor core-shell (CdSe/ZnS) quantum dots in proximity to the surface plasmon polariton field of periodic Ag nanoparticle arrays. Tuning the surface plasmon polariton resonance to the quantum dot exciton emission band results in an enhancement of up to approximately 50-fold in the overall fluorescence efficiency, in a design where each Ag nanoparticle is interconnected by a continuous Ag thin film. Propagating modes of surface plasmon resonances have a direct impact on the fluorescence enhancement.

Appropriate addition of CuO/V2O5 and the reduction of the granularity of the raw materials particle decrease the sintering temperature of NiZn ferrite from 1200 degrees C to 930 degrees C. Furthermore, the magnetic properties of the NiZn ferrite prepared at low temperature of 930 degrees C is superior to that of the NiZn ferrite prepared by sintering at high temperature of 1200 degrees C because the microstructure of the NiZn ferrite sintered at 930 degrees C is more uniform and compact than that of the NiZn ferrite sintered at 1200 degrees C. The high permeability of 1700 and relative loss coefficient tandelta/mu(i) of 9.0x10(-6) at 100 kHz was achieved in the (Ni0.17Zn0.63Cu0.20)Fe1.915O4 ferrite.

A convenient route for the synthesis of high-quality overcoated II-VI quantum dots (QDs) is reported in this paper. Simple salts, such as Cd(Ac)2 and Zn(Ac)2 were used to replace organometallics, whose disadvantage is obvious. Size-tunable core/shell structured QDs (CdSe/ZnS, CdSe/CdS, etc.) were synthesized. They were of narrow size distribution and had good monodispersivity and photoluminescence (PL) properties. The spectrum was symmetrical and sharp-pointed (with the full width at half-maximum (fwhm) of about 20-30 nm). The quantum yield (QY) was improved to 60-80% from 20-30% for bare QDs and remained stable at least for 6 months. The primary overcoated QDs were modified with biomacromolecules by a direct mechanical rubbing strategy, which is very simple and fast. The results obtained by UV-vis, PL, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and fluorescence microscopy imaging showed that the modified QDs were of good fluorescent and monodisperse characteristics. They are likely to be used further for biological labels.

Based on indirect determination of glutamic acid by flame atomic absorption spectrometry with ZnS and the complexing action mechanism, the determination of stability constant of glutamate zinc was studied. Under the selected condition of pH 9.0, the stability constant of glutamate zinc is between 3.3 x 10(20) and 1.4 x 10(21), the average value is betaw = 1.03 x 10(21), and log betaw = 21.013.

The crystal structures of the three Zn(II) complexes, [Zn(bpy)(o-AB)2] (1) (bpy=2,2'-bipyridine, o-AB=o-aminobenzoic acid=Vitamin L), [Zn(bpy)(m-AB)Cl]2 (2) (m-AB=m-aminobenzoic acid), [Zn(bpy)(p-AB)Cl]*p-AB*H2O (3) (p-AB=p-aminobenzoic acid=Vitamin H'), have been determined and the basic coordination geometries and architectures organized by hydrogen-bonds and pi-pi interactions also characterized. The substitute amine group at ortho-, meta-, and para-position of AB plays an important role to produce completely different coordination motif of these complexes, further, in all complexes, aromatic amines are not coordinated to Zn(II) atom. While two different types of coordination modes of the carboxylate O atoms are present in these complexes: one mode consists of the usual Zn-O bond lengths (2.009(2)-2.251(2) A) in complex 1, 2 and 3; another consists of a very long Zn-O bond lengths (2.422(2) A) in complex 1. Each of the complexes has the characteristic UV absorption bands around 250-310 nm region, and the intense fluorescence band at near 325 nm.

A core-shell structured composite, SiO2 coated ZnMnFe2O4 spinel ferrite nanoparticles (average diameter of approximately 80 nm), was prepared by hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) in the presence of ZnMnFe2O4 nanoparticles (average diameter of approximately 10 nm) synthesized by a hydrothermal method. The obtained samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The magnetic measurements were carried out on a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and the measurement results indicate that the core-shell samples possess better magnetic properties at room temperature, compared with paramagnetic colloids with a magnetic core by a coprecipitation method. These core-shell nanospherical particles with self-assembly under additional magnetic fields could have potential application in biomedical systems.
