Abstract

The present status of the LuAl[O.sub.3]:Ce (LuAP) scintillator is reviewed and its performance compared to that of YAl[O.sub.3]:Ce (YAP). The light output of LuAP, at this stage of development, appears to be limited by two factors: insufficient Ce concentration and the presence of a parasitic absorption. Both LuAP and YAP show a dependence of light output on thickness, indicating that YAP also suffers from parasitic absorption. Measurements on undoped material offer a clue to the identity of the 'parasite'.

Abstract

© 2018 Elsevier B.V. Photoluminescence of Ce3+- and Pr3+-activated Sr2GeO4powders was measured between 17 and 600 K. For both ions strong 4fn−15dn→4fn(d-f) emission is observed at low temperatures, around 410 nm (Ce3+) and 280 nm (Pr3+). The Ce3+d-f emission quenches starting at 150 K and disappearing completely just above room temperature. Pr3+d-f luminescence shows an onset of quenching also around 150 K and disappears completely between 250 and 300 K. For Pr3+quenching of the d-f emission was connected with an increasing intensity of the3P0luminescence at first and1D2emission at even higher temperatures. Both these 4fn→4fnemissions were observed up to 600 K. Based on the similar quenching temperatures, thermally stimulated photoionization of the 5d electrons from 5d level of Ce3+or Pr3+to the conduction band is proposed as the most probable mechanism for quenching of the d-f emissions.

Abstract

Tb[sup 3+]-doped Lu[sub 2]O[sub 3] sintered ceramics were prepared in vacuum and in air. It was shown that the vacuum-sintered disks are able to store energy when irradiated with 300-nm or shorter photons. A small part of the stored energy could be recovered with 980-nm light. A much more significant amount of the stored energy could be released with red 647-nm photons. However, recovering the total stored energy could be accomplished only upon heating up to about 300 °C. Changes in absorption of the raw materials upon ultraviolet irradiation and subsequent IR (980 and 647 nm) treatments or upon heating at 300 °C are presented and discussed. A model for energy storing and recovering through the various IR irradiations or through heating is presented. At least two distinct ways of hole trapping as Tb[sup 4+] or V[sub k]-center as well as creation off and F[sup +] is suggested. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The spectroscopic measurements of Eu-doped Lu(sub 2)O(sub 3) nanocrystalline powders and the comparison of the results obtained for micronmeter-sized polycrystalline sintered specimens fabricated from nanoparticulate powder are presented. The excitation spectra reveals that the host material is able to transfer acquired energy to the Eu(sub 3+) ions and excite them, which indicates that the Lu(sub 2)O(sub 3)/Eu composition are noteworthy for high-energy ionizing radiation detection.

83. Persistent luminescence from Y3Al2Ga3O12doped with Ce3+and Cr3+after X-ray and blue light irradiation

Abstract

The persistent luminescence (PersL) dependence on the dopants and derived mechanism of trapping and de-trapping processes were investigated in Y3Al2Ga3O12(YAGG) based nanophosphor, doped with Ce3+and/or Cr3+. It is found that the presence of Cr3+ions produce electron and hole traps and capture suitable charge after X-ray irradiation. The effect of irradiation on the carriers trapping and their pathways after excitation was studied by means of thermo luminescence technique. On the other hand, for blue light irradiation the mechanism seems to be different. In the latter case, the Ce3+ions, having the position of energy levels in the conduction band, become sensitizers for the electrons and main emission centres for the PersL (de-trapping process goes through Ce3+).

99. Quantum efficiency of europium emission from nanocrystalline powders of Lu2O3:E

Abstract

hree series of nanocrystalline powders ofLu2O3:Eu with Eu concentration varying from 0.05to 13% were prepared. All specimens were obtained through combustionsynthesis using urea or glycine as the fuel. The powders of the firstseries consisted of materials with crystallites about 13 nm in size andwere prepared with urea. For the next series of powders, made withglycine, the crystallites were about 30 nm in size. The powders of thethird series differed from those of the second one in that they wereco-doped with 1% of Ca. For the series made with urea the quantumefficiency was highest for 3% of Eu and never exceeded about 30%. Forglycine-prepared specimens the highest quantum efficiency was about 90%.Without the Ca co-doping such a value could be obtained for specimensdoped with 5% of Eu, while in the series co-doped with Ca 85-90% quantumefficiency could be maintained for all concentrations in the range3-10%. A significant number of OH groups were proved to be left in thefinal product obtained with urea. The low quantum efficiency of thesepowders is attributed to this effect. The results prove that properlyprepared nanocrystalline phosphors can produce luminescence efficiently.
