Playgrounds are crucial spaces where children can develop within their formative years. Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) require additional support that caters to their sensory and social needs. A systematic literature review identified design characteristics to transform a play space into an environment where physical, social, and personal growth for children of varying abilities is encouraged. To model these recommendations, an examination of a playground was conducted with suggestions adapted to develop an accessible play environment. Results showed that there is a need for outdoor play spaces that engage children in building and maintaining relationships with peers. Providing equitable access to play allows people to come together due to a shared need for connectivity.

Background: Participation in adventure as a recreational therapy intervention is well-recognized for its benefits for people with disabilities. Advances in technology and adaptive equipment have increased accessibility to adventure-based activities for those with physical disabilities. Climbing has long been established to facilitate the psychological state of flow; however, there is little research on the experience of flow in individuals with physical disabilities and adaptive climbing, specifically. Purpose: This study investigated if flow is experienced differently between individuals with and without physical disabilities who participated in climbing programs and to determine if there was a relationship between flow and intentions in future participation in climbing. Methodology: The Flow State Scale-2 was used to assess flow and additional questions measured participation. Findings: The global flow score on the FSS-2 indicated that climbers with and without disabilities both experienced a flow-like state. Climbers without disabilities reported a significantly higher sense of control, one of the nine dimensions of flow. Implications: With a better understanding of how people with physical disabilities experience flow, practitioners can better design interventions to facilitate this experience and should know how flow can best be used to promote an active leisure lifestyle.

The Journal of Special Educational Technology (JOSET) has been a leading journal in the domain of technology application in special education since 1978 (Journal Searches, 2023; Resurchify, 2022; SCI Journal, 2023; Scopus, 2022). In this bibliometric study, we examined JOSET's growth, publication trends, contributions, and international collaborations using descriptive, intellectual, conceptual, and social structure analyses. Documents (i.e., articles, editorials, errata, letters, and notes) published in JOSET from 1996 to 2021 were retrieved from the Scopus database and analysed using Biblioshiny embedded in R studio. Co-citation and co-word analyses identified five and two clusters, respectively. The analysis of the collaboration structure in JOSET reveals a positive relationship among authors, with over 75% of publications resulting from collaboration. The results further suggest that the journal continues to keep pace with global trends and contemporary issues, which can enhance its impact and readership and drive the growth of its annual publication number.

Purpose: The purpose of the paper is to describe the development and implementation of a specialized Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) designed to enhance the knowledge and skills related to sustainability in students with Down Syndrome. This VLE serves as a means to make sustainable concepts more accessible and comprehensible to this specific student group, with the aim of promoting their engagement and understanding of sustainability, environmental awareness, recycling, and sustainable construction. The ultimate goal is to empower students with Down syndrome by providing them with a tailored educational tool that facilitates their learning in a manner that is engaging and effective. Design/methodology/approach: The approach outlines the overarching plan for creating the e-learning platform, including the technological choices and design considerations necessary to make it effective and accessible for students with Down Syndrome. It's a fundamental component of the methodology, as it sets the direction for the platform's development and aligns with the objectives of the study. And also encompass the strategy for teaching and learning sustainability aspects to students with Down syndrome. Findings: Positive Feedback from Tutors and Professionals: The feedback from tutors and professionals is generally positive, with 91.4% finding the platform to be well-organized and 88.6% considering the content adequate and understandable. This suggests that the VLE met the needs and expectations of educators and professionals involved in the learning process. Utility for Professional Practice: Approximately 80% of tutors and professionals found the platform useful for their professional practice, indicating that it has practical applications beyond student learning. This information highlights the success and potential impact of the VLE for this specific target group. Research limitations/implications: The study may not have explored the depth of sustainability concepts covered within the VLE. Future research could delve into the specifics of the content and its effectiveness in teaching complex sustainability topics. Practical implications: The incorporation of universal design principles in the VLE development could serve as a model for creating inclusive e-learning platforms. This has broader implications for improving digital accessibility in education. The positive feedback from tutors and professionals suggests the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in education. Professionals from various fields, including special education and sustainability, can work together to create effective and inclusive learning tools. Social implications: This study can contribute to the broader discussion on inclusive education and the effective use of technology to enhance learning experiences for individuals with disabilities. Originality/value: The study addresses a crucial gap in the field of sustainability education by focusing on students with Down syndrome. It highlights the importance of making sustainability education inclusive and accessible to a diverse range of learners, including those with disabilities. This originality contributes to the broader discourse on inclusive education and environmental awareness. The development of a specialized Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) for this specific target group is an original contribution. It demonstrates the potential for adapting educational technology to meet the unique needs of students with Down syndrome, potentially serving as a model for future educational tool development.

Individuals with deaf-blindness and co-occurring diagnoses, such as intellectual and developmental disabilities, may experience difficulty with independence, specifically with communication. One behavior-analytic procedure that may be useful for increasing independence and teaching communication to this population is the behavior-chain interruption strategy (BCIS). The current study examined the use of the BCIS to teach a 65-year-old deaf-blind participant with severe intellectual disability to use a SadoTech Elderly Monitoring Pager to notify others in the environment when help was needed. The researcher alternated between establishing operation (EO; help needed, items missing, or inoperable) and abolishing operation (AO; help not needed, items present, and operable) trials for three previously mastered daily living routines. The results demonstrated that following intervention, the participant used the device independently during EO trials and never used it during AO trials across behavior chains, and similar results were obtained during a treatment-extension phase. Limitations and implications for applied practice are discussed.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability to discriminate yes/no questions from statements in three groups of children--bilateral cochlear implant (CI) users, nontraditional CI users with aidable hearing preoperatively in the ear to be implanted, and controls with normal hearing. Half of the nontraditional CI users had sufficient postoperative acoustic hearing in the implanted ear to use electric-acoustic stimulation, and half used a CI alone. Method: Participants heard recorded sentences that were produced either as yes/no questions or as statements by three male and three female talkers. Three raters scored each participant response as either a question or a statement. Bilateral CI users (n = 40, 4-12 years old) and normal-hearing controls (n = 10, 4-12 years old) were tested binaurally in the free field. Nontraditional CI recipients (n = 22, 6-17 years old) were tested with direct audio input to the study ear. Results: For the bilateral CI users, performance was predicted by age but not by 125-Hz acoustic thresholds; just under half (n = 17) of the participants in this group had measurable 125-Hz thresholds in their better ear. For nontraditional CI recipients, better performance was predicted by lower 125-Hz acoustic thresholds in the test ear, and there was no association with participant age. Performance approached that of the normal-hearing controls for some participants in each group. Conclusions: Results suggest that a 125-Hz acoustic hearing supports discrimination of yes/no questions and statements in pediatric CI users. Bilateral CI users with little or no acoustic hearing at 125 Hz develop the ability to perform this task, but that ability emerges later than for children with better acoustic hearing. These results underscore the importance of preserving acoustic hearing for pediatric CI users when possible.

Purpose: Verbal working memory is poorer for children with hearing loss than for peers with normal hearing (NH), even with cochlear implantation and early intervention. Poor verbal working memory can affect academic performance, especially in higher grades, making this deficit a significant problem. This study examined the stability of verbal working memory across middle childhood, tested working memory in adolescents with NH or cochlear implants (CIs), explored whether signal enhancement can improve verbal working memory, and tested two hypotheses proposed to explain the poor verbal working memory of children with hearing loss: (a) Diminished auditory experience directly affects executive functions, including working memory; (b) degraded auditory inputs inhibit children's abilities to recover the phonological structure needed for encoding verbal material into storage. Design: Fourteen-year-olds served as subjects: 55 with NH; 52 with CIs. Immediate serial recall tasks were used to assess working memory. Stimuli consisted of nonverbal, spatial stimuli and four kinds of verbal, acoustic stimuli: nonrhyming and rhyming words, and nonrhyming words with two kinds of signal enhancement: audiovisual and indexical. Analyses examined (a) stability of verbal working memory across middle childhood, (b) differences in verbal and nonverbal working memory, (c) effects of signal enhancement on recall, (d) phonological processing abilities, and (e) source of the diminished verbal working memory in adolescents with cochlear implants. Results: Verbal working memory remained stable across middle childhood. Adolescents across groups performed similarly for nonverbal stimuli, but those with CIs displayed poorer recall accuracy for verbal stimuli; signal enhancement did not improve recall. Poor phonological sensitivity largely accounted for the group effect. Conclusions: The central executive for working memory is not affected by hearing loss or cochlear implantation. Instead, the phonological deficit faced by adolescents with CIs denigrates the representation in storage and augmenting the signal does not help.

Introduction: Audio description (AD) should satisfy the needs of people who are visually impaired; however, quality assessment in university training programs has rarely been based on feedback provided by AD users. Aiming to help students truly understand the needs of people who are visually impaired and their criteria for AD, this study adopted user-centered evaluation in an AD training program offered by a university in Hong Kong. Method: Three evaluators with visual impairment, representing the views of AD users, were invited to evaluate 29 students' film clips that included AD and discuss their evaluation criteria. Eleven students participated in focus-group interviews and were asked to comment on AD products and discuss their own evaluation criteria. The evaluation criteria of the two groups were compared qualitatively and quantitatively with the aid of the software NVivo. Results: The results showed discrepancies between the users' and the trainees' criteria as well as differences in their focuses when evaluating the AD products. The users' criteria were more numerous; however, certain criteria were perceived exclusively by the trainees. Discussion: Without sufficient knowledge of users' needs, AD trainees are inclined to provide redundant information (e.g., easily identifiable film sounds and speaker information) while neglecting some aspects of AD (e.g., the prudent use of pronouns and literary expressions), which are deemed important by the users. Implications for Practitioners: The results prompted AD instructors to integrate user feedback into AD training to improve students' understanding of how to produce AD that better meets its users' needs.

Introduction: When the United States adopted Nemeth Code within Unified English Braille (UEB) Contexts and UEB Math/Science in 2016, students who were using braille had to learn a new code for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). In late 2016, Bell and Silverman surveyed students about their initial experiences transitioning to a new braille code. However, to date there has not been additional research that includes students' perspectives regarding the long-term effect of the transition to a new braille code on their ability to learn. The purpose of this study was to learn about students' experiences in transitioning to a new braille code, whether students receive STEM braille materials in a timely manner, the technology students use in STEM, and what advice students have for teachers of students with visual impairments. Methods: In the spring of 2021, 11 middle and high school students who use braille for STEM classes participated in one of three focus groups. The data were analyzed using open-coding methods. Results: All participants had initially learned the Nemeth Braille Code for Mathematics and Science Notation and subsequently transitioned to one of the new braille codes. Students typically characterized learning a new braille code as easy. Most of the students had experienced delays in receiving braille materials, which sometimes negatively affected their ability to learn. Students reported using a variety of mainstream and assistive technologies. Discussion: Students should have consistent access to high-quality STEM materials in a timely manner in the braille code that they prefer. The students in this study articulated their preferences and were willing to advocate for themselves to overcome learning challenges in their STEM courses. Implications for Practitioners: Teachers of students with visual impairments can partner with general education STEM teachers and administrators to resolve persistent issues. Teachers can encourage students to voice their preferences and assist students in developing strategies before challenges arise.

Purpose: Postoperative rehabilitation programs for cochlear implant (CI) recipients primarily emphasize enhancing speech perception. However, effective communication in everyday social interactions necessitates consideration of diverse verbal social cues to facilitate language comprehension. Failure to discern emotional expressions may lead to maladjusted social behavior, underscoring the importance of integrating social cues perception into rehabilitation initiatives to enhance CI users' well-being. After conventional rehabilitation, CI users demonstrate varying levels of emotion perception abilities. This disparity notably impacts young CI users, whose emotion perception deficit can extend to social functioning, encompassing coping strategies and social competence, even when relying on nonauditory cues such as facial expressions. Knowing that emotion perception abilities generally decrease with age, acknowledging emotion perception impairments in aging CI users is crucial, especially since a direct correlation between quality-of-life scores and vocal emotion recognition abilities has been observed in adult CI users. After briefly reviewing the scope of CI rehabilitation programs and summarizing the mounting evidence on CI users' emotion perception deficits and their impact, we will present our recommendations for embedding emotional training as part of enriched and standardized evaluation/rehabilitation programs that can improve CI users' social integration and quality of life. Conclusions: Evaluating all aspects, including emotion perception, in CI rehabilitation programs is crucial because it ensures a comprehensive approach that enhances speech comprehension and the emotional dimension of communication, potentially improving CI users' social interaction and overall well-being. The development of emotion perception training holds promises for CI users and individuals grappling with various forms of hearing loss and sensory deficits. Ultimately, adopting such a comprehensive approach has the potential to significantly elevate the overall quality of life for a broad spectrum of patients.

Purpose: Thirty percent of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) do not develop spoken language. To provide a means of communication for this subset of the population, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems are often utilized. Low-tech options have traditionally been delivered through the in-person modality. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, changes to service delivery models have been required. This randomized controlled trial was conducted in order to assess the efficacy of low-tech AAC delivered face-to-face versus remotely on communication outcomes in nonspeaking children with ASD. Conclusions: Both participant groups demonstrated similar gains in AAC proficiency, number and type of nonspeaking acts, and number of spoken communication acts. Remote delivery of low-tech AAC treatment is a viable alternative to face-to-face instruction.

Background: Stroke profoundly affects quality of life (QOL), including loss of employment, reduced social activity, shrinking social networks and low mood. Dysgraphia (impaired writing) is a common symptom of aphasia yet is rarely targeted in rehabilitation. Recent technological advances might challenge this, since much communication is now conducted digitally through writing. The rehabilitation of writing may therefore help to address the wider consequences of stroke and aphasia. Aims: Can assistive technology (AT) training for people with dysgraphia: (1) improve written output, and are gains achieved only with AT? (2) improve reading comprehension scores, and are gains achieved only with AT? and (3) affect social participation, mood or QOL. Methods and Procedures: Design: A mixed-methods, repeated measures, small group study design was adopted (qualitative outcomes will be reported elsewhere). Participants: Recruited from community settings, for example, Stroke Association communication support groups. Inclusion criteria: over 18 years old, aphasia due to stroke, acquired dysgraphia, writing more impaired than speech, fluent English prior to stroke, access to computer and Internet. Exclusion criteria: currently receiving speech and language therapy, significant cognitive impairment, neuromuscular/motor-speech impairments/structural abnormalities, developmental dyslexia, uncorrected visual/auditory impairments. Procedures: Screening and diagnostic assessments at time T1 (first baseline). Outcome measures at T1; repeated at T2 (second baseline), T3 (end of intervention), T4 (3-month follow up). Social participation assessment and cognitive monitoring at T2, T3, T4. Intervention: Seven-ten hours individual therapy weekly and additional email support. Participants were trained to operate Dragon NaturallySpeaking (speech to text package) and ClaroRead (read writing aloud). Outcome measures were administered on pen and paper (control) and on computer, with AT enabled only at T3, T4. Outcomes and Results: Computer narrative writing was significantly improved by AT training (Friedman's X[superscript 2] (3) = 8.27, p = 0.041), indicating a compensatory effect of AT. Though reading comprehension significantly improved in the computer condition (Friedman's X[superscript 2] (3) = 21.07, p = 0.001), gains could not be attributed to the AT. Gains were achieved only when measures were administered on the keyboard, with AT enabled. Thus, a compensatory rather than remediatory effect was suggested. Social network size significantly increased; there were no significant changes in mood/QOL. Individual success rates varied. Conclusion and Implications: The customisable AT training was acceptable to participants and resulted in significantly improved narrative writing. Compensatory AT interventions are a useful adjunct to remediatory writing interventions and may particularly support functional writing.

Purpose: The present study investigates the perception of vowel nasality in French-speaking children with cochlear implants (CIs; CI group) and children with typical hearing (TH; TH group) aged 4-12 years. By investigating the vocalic nasality feature in French, the study aims to document more broadly the effects of the acoustic limitations of CI in processing segments characterized by acoustic cues that require optimal spectral resolution. The impact of various factors related to children's characteristics, such as chronological/auditory age, age of implantation, and exposure to cued speech, has been studied on performance, and the acoustic characteristics of the stimuli in perceptual tasks have also been investigated. Method: Identification and discrimination tasks involving French nasal and oral vowels were administered to two groups of children: 13 children with CIs (CI group) and 25 children with TH (TH group) divided into three age groups (4-6 years, 7-9 years, and 10-12 years). French nasal vowels were paired with their oral phonological counterpart (phonological pairing) as well as to the closest oral vowel in terms of phonetic proximity (phonetic pairing). Post hoc acoustic analyses of the stimuli were linked to the performance in perception. Results: The results indicate an effect of the auditory status on the performance in the two tasks, with the CI group performing at a lower level than the TH group. However, the scores of the children in the CI group are well above chance level, exceeding 80%. The most common errors in identification were substitutions between nasal vowels and phonetically close oral vowels as well as confusions between the phoneme /u/ and other oral vowels. Phonetic pairs showed lower discrimination performance in the CI group with great variability in the results. Age effects were observed only in TH children for nasal vowel identification, whereas in children with CIs, a positive impact of cued speech practice and early implantation was found. Differential links between performance and acoustic characteristics were found within our groups, suggesting that in children with CIs, selective use of certain acoustic features, presumed to be better transmitted by the implant, leads to better perceptual performance. Conclusions: The study's results reveal specific challenges in children with CIs when processing segments characterized by fine spectral resolution cues. However, the CI children in our study appear to effectively compensate for these difficulties by utilizing various acoustic cues assumed to be well transmitted by the implant, such as cues related to the temporal resolution of stimuli.

Purpose: This study builds upon an established effective training method to investigate the advantages of high variability phonetic identification training for enhancing lexical tone perception and production in Mandarin-speaking pediatric cochlear implant (CI) recipients, who typically face ongoing challenges in these areas. Method: Thirty-two Mandarin-speaking children with CIs were quasirandomly assigned into the training group (TG) and the control group (CG). The 16 TG participants received five sessions of high variability phonetic training (HVPT) within a period of 3 weeks. The CG participants did not receive the training. Perception and production of Mandarin tones were administered before (pretest) and immediately after (posttest) the completion of HVPT via lexical tone recognition task and picture naming task. Both groups participated in the identical pretest and posttest with the same time frame between the two test sessions. Results: TG showed significant improvement from pretest to posttest in identifying Mandarin tones for both trained and untrained speech stimuli. Moreover, perceptual learning of HVPT significantly facilitated trainees' production of T1 and T2 as rated by a cohort of 10 Mandarin-speaking adults with normal hearing, which was corroborated by acoustic analyses revealing improved fundamental frequency (F0) median for T1 and T2 production and enlarged F0 movement for T2 production. In contrast, TG children's production of T3 and T4 showed nonsignificant changes across two test sessions. Meanwhile, CG did not exhibit significant changes in either perception or production. Conclusions: The results suggest a limited and inconsistent transfer of perceptual learning to lexical tone production in children with CIs, which challenges the notion of a robust transfer and highlights the complexity of the interaction between perceptual training and production outcomes. Further research on individual differences with a longitudinal design is needed to optimize the training protocol or tailor interventions to better meet the diverse needs of learners.

Objectives: We provide a novel application of psycholinguistic theories and methods to the field of auditory training to provide preliminary data regarding which minimal pair contrasts are more difficult for listeners with typical hearing to distinguish in real-time. Design: Using eye-tracking, participants heard a word and selected the corresponding image from a display of four: the target word, two unrelated words, and a word from one of four contrast categories (i.e., voiced-initial [e.g., "peach-beach"], voiced-final [e.g., "back-bag"], manner-initial [e.g., "talk-sock"], and manner-final [e.g., "bat-bass"]). Results: Fixations were monitored to measure how strongly words compete for recognition depending on the contrast type (voicing, manner) and location (word-initial or final). Manner contrasts competed more for recognition than did voicing contrasts, and contrasts that occurred in word-final position were harder to distinguish than word-initial position. Conclusion: These results are an important initial step toward creating an evidence-based hierarchy for auditory training for individuals who use cochlear implants.

The effectiveness of education and upbringing of children with hearing loss who are placed in special and mixed groups remains an important issue. The study aims to establish mixed groups consisting of both healthy children and children with hearing loss, and subsequently evaluate and compare their cognitive and mental development across different phases of the experiment, taking into account their level of digital literacy skills. Digital literacy skills are essential for the full development of children in the digital age. Children were tested for digital literacy level, cognitive skills, emotional stability, and relationships with peers using the Battelle Developmental Inventory, as well as Temple, Dorkey, and Amen test. The findings were compared among groups and categories of children. The digital literacy level of children with implants and hearing loss by the end of the study year was slightly lower than in the control group. The use of digital technologies made it possible to improve the speech functions of children with implants and hearing loss by 1.5-2.0 times. Children without hearing loss, who were placed in groups for children with speech disorders, were divided into those who were rejected and those who were accepted. Perhaps, this might result in more severe anxiety among such children. Children from the mixed groups were more tolerant of their peers. The resulting data suggested greater effectiveness of the mixed groups compared to the traditional system of special education programs and upbringing.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who are also minimally verbal may require specialized interventions to promote the development of vocalizations. Preliminary research supports an innovative procedure called response contingent stimulus-stimulus pairing (SSP) as a potentially effective procedure to promote vocalizations. The primary aim of this study was to demonstrate the feasibility of delivering a randomized trial comparing response contingent SSP to a control condition. Secondary aims were to demonstrate the feasibility of deploying to the home environment the Digital Language Processor (DLP), a voice recorder by LENA®, and to examine preliminary efficacy of the intervention. Sixteen minimally verbal children with ASD (ages 2.0 to 3.9 years) were randomly assigned to the intervention or control condition with access to delayed treatment. Feasibility metrics were met in that 14 participants (88%) finished the study and attendance to all assessment time points and treatment sessions was over 90%. The research team conducted treatment sessions with 99% fidelity and collected 83.3% of voice recorder data. Nine of 16 caregiver satisfaction surveys were returned, and scores averaged 5.68 out of a possible 6.00 across all participants. Preliminary treatment data results showed that 8/14 participants (57%) showed significant improvement in target sounds and participants receiving the intervention were 3.5 times as likely to improve compared to control.

Colorado has a significant shortage of special education teachers, particularly within rural areas. This article will compare two grant-funded recruitment and training projects drawing connections from the current research base in training and retention. High-Leverage Practices were infused into these projects to support authentic assistive technology (AT) implementations and the use of multimodal literacy strategies with K-12 special education students. The recruitment and training grants focused on two distinct pathways for teacher preparation: alternative special education teachers and paraprofessionals. Consistent in both projects was the inclusion of intensive asynchronous online training related to AT and multimodal literacy and coursework assignments incorporating technology into their teaching and learning. The article will include project materials, timelines, training resources, illustrative case studies, and student artifacts showcasing exemplars and practical ways to apply these initiatives within teacher preparation programs.

Interprofessional education and collaborative practice (IPEC) are essential components of healthcare teams in the United States. This study aimed to explore the impact of a community-based Go Baby Go (GBG) project that used assistive technology and environmental adaptation skills to provide interprofessional education and hands-on collaboration between occupational therapy and speech-language pathology graduate students. The interprofessional collaboration (IPC) experiences provided to graduate students were centered on shared lectures and labs on role delineation, evaluation, and treatment focused on modifications through assistive technology and environmental adaptation. The culminating experience included labs with three to four students from each discipline in a team to evaluate and develop a battery-powered rideable toy car modification for a child with a disability. Students completed pre- and post-surveys followed by written reflections about the IPC experience. A paired-samples t-test was used to evaluate changes between pre- and post-survey scores. The mean score for the post-test survey scores demonstrated a statistically significant increase over the mean score for the pre-test. The themes from the qualitative analysis of student reflections included "role of each discipline," "collaboration," and "hands-on, real-life learning," indicating that community-based IPC experiences can be beneficial in promoting team collaboration, understanding role delineation, and professional scope of practice. The GBG project of modifying and fitting the battery-powered toy car can be a fun and impactful way to promote IPC and real-world evaluation and treatment opportunities for student learning.

As a result of seeing 100% of the student population, elementary music teachers host more students with disabilities than a general classroom teacher would in his or her class. Depending on the severity of students' disabilities, some require general music lesson alterations. To create the least restrictive environment for students with exceptionalities, teachers must adapt, accommodate, or modify materials, space usage, time spent instructing, and instruction modality. According to current literature, 85% of music teachers (general, band, choir, and strings) adapt goals and objectives for students with disabilities; however, only 9% of surveyed teachers felt competent in their skills to do so. This exploratory study aimed to survey regional elementary music teachers to discover their knowledge of adaptive materials, the likelihood and frequency of using them in their classrooms, what disabilities were prevalent in their classes, and if activities were adjusted.

Although more students with disabilities are attending university than ever before, many still have difficulties with the transition from high school. Transition research has extensively examined the factors and barriers that support or hinder successful transitions for students with disabilities. However, there has been little explicit focus on the "intersection" of experiences with transition and academic accommodations on the overall experience of students with disabilities at university. This study interviewed six participants with various disabilities who transitioned directly from high school to university. Thematic analysis showed that: (a) first-year students are unprepared for the bureaucratic nature of the accommodation process, but ultimately find it fair and non-stigmatizing; (b) first-year students discover that they have to play a more active role in their accommodation planning but ultimately find that this role, and the accommodations they receive, positively supports their autonomy and disability identity at university; and (c) some university instructors exhibit significantly negative attitudes towards students requiring accommodations. These findings have practice implications for disability service professionals in universities supporting the transition needs of students with disabilities.

The potential of ChatGPT is explored as an assistive technology tool within the framework of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to provide targeted support for college students with disabilities. As colleges and universities strive to promote inclusive practices, the implementation of UDL principles has gained significance. ChatGPT's interactive conversational interface aligns seamlessly with UDL, offering personalized assistance, promoting comprehension, and creating engagement opportunities among diverse learners. Numerous examples are provided, which align with both the universal design framework and the needs of learners receiving accessible and assistive services on a college campus. This paper identifies the possibilities for ChatGPT as an accommodation tool to significantly impact and improve the inclusive and equitable learning experiences of college students with disabilities.

This study investigates teacher satisfaction with available assistive technology (AT) for students with sensory impairments in their classrooms. The study group included teachers of deaf and hard of hearing (Dhh) and blind and visually impaired students in Najran region, a southern city in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The findings suggest that teachers of students with sensory impairments feel that their schools should provide them with updated AT to better serve their students. Additionally, the results indicate that satisfaction with the available AT was not impacted by the teacher's gender. This study reinforces that more AT must be provided for students with sensory impairments. In addition to increasing the availability of AT, schools should educate teachers on techniques associated with implementing AT in their classrooms. This study confirms the importance of the technology in the educational process and the success of achieving its objectives.

Education based on the Internet of Things (IoEdT) emerges as a new conceptual paradigm to define the use of wireless technology as a collaborative tool in teaching-learning processes. Based on this concept, this study explored the potential of the IoEdT as a response to the problems of social inclusion of students with disabilities. In this way, the applicability of the IoEdT as an assistive technology was examined and the challenges faced in the implementation of this tool in the socio-educational context were analyzed. Therefore, this study aims to analyze whether the use of new technologies can become a propelling subject of inclusive transformation or an obstacle to achieving educational equity. For this, an investigation will be carried out with a quantitative, descriptive, and documentary approach. The work presented, as a result, a sampling of available assistive technologies that use the internet of things in the teaching and communication of people with disabilities and the main challenges faced in the availability of this technology.

This literature review examines the use of text-to-speech (TTS) software as an accommodation for students with learning disabilities and its impact on improving reading comprehension. As the development and availability of TTS tools and assistive technologies have increased over the past decade, it is significant to explore how they are used to accommodate students at all levels of education to promote a universal design of learning. Based on a review of the current literature and utilizing self-regulated learning theory as a framework, four significant themes have emerged: (a) TTS being seen as a compensatory tool; (b) improving reading abilities and comprehension; (c) increasing student motivation and self-efficacy; and (d) the need for training for students, educators, and parents. Findings of this literature review revealed that overall, TTS software is commonly used as a compensatory tool (mainly at the postsecondary level), has assisted in students improving reading speed, fluency, and content retention, resulted in increased student self-efficacy in reading abilities and independent learning, and that there is a significant need to allocate training and technological resources to support students. As there are various directions for future research, exploring this area can contribute to schools promoting inclusive and accommodating learning environments.

Research findings on the prevalence and characteristics of behavioral problems of children with hearing loss (HL) are not consistent. The aim of this study was to compare the behavioral problems of children with HL, with typical development (TD) and with autism spectrum disorder (ASD); and to determine the factors affecting behavioral problems in the HL group. Data were collected by using two scales based on the reports of 273 teachers of children with TD, HL and ASD: Child Behavior Checklist-Teacher Report Form (CBCL-TRF) and Social Skills Rating System-Problem Behaviors (SSRS-PB). ANOVA results showed that there was no difference between children with HL and TD, children with ASD had more behavioral problems than the two groups. In the HL group, children using hearing aids exhibited more behavioral problems than children with cochlear implants. Children who had additional problems displayed more behavioral problems than those who had not. Age at onset of hearing aid use and age at implantation were found to be significant predictors of behavioral problems. The findings point to the role of early intervention in preventing behavioral problems in children with HL.

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) who work with deaf students find themselves in a unique situation as deaf children often use a different language than their SLP. Providing language therapy requires high levels of fluency in the language of the client (Hoskin et al., 2023). This language proficiency is necessary to implement interventions that meet the client's needs (ASHA, n.d.b.). However, few SLPs are native signers, most SLPs are not fluent in American Sign Language (ASL), and many SLPs prioritize the use of oral language over the use of signed language with deaf children (Sanzo, 2022). Additionally, to obtain an American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) certificate of clinical competence, an individual must have sufficient speech and hearing skills. Indeed, Cripps et al. (2016) found that SLP graduate students felt unprepared to provide language therapy to deaf students in ASL due to a lack of training in their graduate programs. This insufficient training among SLPs highlights the importance of addressing the gap in education if they are to work with deaf children (Cripps, 2019). This article examines how SLPs can work to ensure their language intervention with deaf children is effective and equitable. It also recommends SLPs should work on improving their ASL, increasing their knowledge of the Deaf community and of what it means to be a member of a marginalized group in society, and expanding their cultural

Mateo was like many students, neither fluent in English nor in American Sign Language (ASL) and significantly delayed in literacy skills. At Model Secondary School for the Deaf (MSSD), he was provided with emerging signers services to develop his expressive and receptive ASL skills. He was also provided with speech and language services by a bilingual, Spanish-speaking speech-language pathologist. This included the use of listening devices that changed text to speech (TTS) and speech to text (STT). TTS is an assistive technology in which the computer reads aloud text on the screen. STT is available on the electronic devices people use every day. People use STT when they ask Siri or Alexa to check the weather or play a song. This article presents how TTS and STT have proven to be valuable tools for Mateo and other Deaf and hard of hearing students with adequate access to spoken language.

Efforts to include people with disabilities in design education are difficult to scale, and dynamics of participation need to be carefully planned to avoid putting unnecessary burdens on users. However, given the scale of emerging AI-enhanced technologies and their potential for creating new vulnerabilities for marginalized populations, new methods for generating empathy and self-reflection in technology design students (as the future creators of such technologies) are needed. We report on a study with Information Systems graduate students where they used a participatory elicitation toolkit to reflect on two cases of end-user privacy perspectives towards AI-enhanced tools in the age of surveillance capitalism: their own when using tools to support learning, and those of older adults using AI-enhanced adaptive assistive technologies (AATs) that help with pointing and typing difficulties. In drawing on the experiences of students with intersectional identities, our exploratory study aimed to incorporate intersectional thinking in privacy elicitation and further understand its role in enabling sustainable, inclusive design practice and education. While aware of the risks to their own privacy and the role of identity and power in shaping experiences of bias, students who used the toolkit were more sanguine about risks faced by AAT users--assuming more data equates to better technology. Our tool proved valuable for eliciting reflection but not empathy.

The aim of this study, which was carried out according to the life story/narrative research design, which is one of the qualitative research methods, is to examine the life story of a mother living with a child with an additional disability. In this context, a 5-year-old child with deficiencies such as hearing loss, autism and ADHD and his mother were included in the study. The research data consists of semi-structured interviews, observations, and document analysis. The collected data were analyzed with the inductive analysis method. As a result of the analysis, four main themes and ten sub-themes were reached. It was found that the mother had problems in the diagnosis process of the child, in the use of hearing aids, placement in appropriate educational environments, familial support and social support services. Based on these problems, it is necessary to make updates in planning legal regulations and related legislation.

With the advancement of technologies, disabled students are being cared for to progress in their education through assistive technologies (AT). They ensure the inclusion of the target group to make them equal with their peers who do not suffer from disabilities. Unfortunately, there is only scarce research on this margin group in connection with technology. Therefore, the aim of the systematic review is to conduct research on the best practices, pedagogical implications, and limitations for the target group using AT. The results based on the review of empirical studies on the research topic conducted between 2013 and 2023 suggest that the best practices of AT are coming from recent years, specifically from 2017, and countries ranging from Europe to Indonesia and Thailand. Pedagogical implications suggest that the learners using AT are becoming more autonomous, independent and successful in academic achievements. Limitations within the study include the fact that AT needs to be more developed and accessible to learners along with more specialized training of specialists and teachers. Future research on the topic should be aimed at better equipment for these learners with AT.

This study focuses on the use of Google Classroom as assistive technology in inclusive classrooms. Findings were based on data collected through single-case study methodology in semi-structured formal and informal interviews with eight teachers and a focus group with six students at one junior high school in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada. This study is designed to better understand the benefits and challenges associated with the use of Google Classroom within the framework of universal design for learning. The findings showed that Google Classroom was perceived by both teachers and students as effective classroom technology in meeting the needs of each learner in the classroom.

Text-to-speech (TTS) technology is a common accommodation available for students with disabilities. Despite the ubiquitous nature of TTS, this technology has not been explored in laboratory settings for neurodiverse college students. This study explores the adaptability of laboratory accessible TTS technology (originally developed for blind/low vision (B/LV) students) for neurodiverse students. Students were asked to provide general feedback about the usability and effectiveness of the technology using Likert surveys. The students also answered open-ended questions about how the technology could be adapted to be more neurodiverse friendly. Overall, more than 50% of the students found the technology useful but had specific feedback about adaptations that could make it even more universal.

Students who are visually impaired but receive adequate support at an early stage have a greater chance of progressing in their academics and future careers. In this research article, the author identified various practice guidelines that can help students with visual impairments achieve a successful transition into the world of work. To discuss available practice guidelines for students from this population, the author conducted a narrative-integrative literature review. According to the study findings, teachers and schools have practical roles to play in assessing and administering educational programs for these students, as well as in utilizing assistive technologies. Further, the study provided guidelines for encouraging career transitions among these students, what is expected of their parents and caregivers, how to provide social and emotional support to these students, and ways to improve their access to library resources. This research contributes to advancing teachers', parents', librarians', and counsellors' knowledge about how to best assist students with visual impairments. The study concluded that ongoing training is critical for all relevant stakeholders, including school administrators, parents, and teachers of visually impaired students.

This study employed a descriptive correlational design to investigate the collaborative role of teachers' profiles, assistive technology utilization, and their impact on teaching exceptional learners in public schools. A convenience sample of 63 teachers who had experience teaching exceptional learners in self-contained and inclusive classrooms in Mandaue City, Philippines, was surveyed to understand the relationships between teachers' profiles, assistive technology utilization, and the impact on learners with exceptionalities. The findings revealed that teacher profiles, particularly educational attainment and income, influenced the perceived effectiveness of middle-to-high technology. Teachers reported that assistive technology positively impacted learners' participation, independence, and skills. Based on these insights, a profile-aligned matrix action plan is recommended to equip special education and inclusion teachers to choose and implement appropriate technologies aligned with exceptional learners' needs. With appropriate government support, the integration of teachers' competencies, technology utilization, and learners' outcomes can be optimized to improve exceptional education through a systemic, profile-aligned approach.

The increasing use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) has brought advances in interventions for people with disabilities. The aim of this study was to review the scientific literature of the last ten years regarding technologies as tools for improving the quality of life of people with disabilities. To this end, PRISMA methodology was used, performing a search in two different databases: Scopus and Web of Science (WoS), obtaining a final sample of 21 studies. To evaluate the risk of bias, the ROBIS tool was used, and the VOSviewer software was employed to carry out a keyword co-occurrence analysis. The main result to emerge was that the scientific literature is increasing, and that the most studied skills are those related to writing and reading. Most of the participants have intellectual disability or autism spectrum disorder move this sentence up. The scientific literature is still scarce; therefore, further research is necessary in this field, since the inclusion of ICT in the day-to-day, both in the teaching-learning process and in activities of daily living, offers new opportunities to people with disability.

Synthetically generated speech (SGS) has become an integral part of our oral communication in a wide variety of contexts. It can be generated instantly at a low cost and allows precise control over multiple aspects of output, all of which can be highly appealing to second language (L2) assessment developers who have traditionally relied upon human voice actors for recording audio materials. Nevertheless, SGS is not widely used in L2 assessments. One major concern in this use case lies in its potential impact on test-taker performance: Would the use of SGS (as opposed to using human voice actor recordings) change how test takers respond to an item? In this study, we investigated using SGS as stimuli for English L2 listening assessment items on test-taker performance. The data came from a pilot administration of multiple new task types and included 653 test takers' responses to two versions of the same 13 items, differing only in terms of their listening stimuli: a version using human voice actor recordings and the other version with SGS files. Multifaceted comparisons between test takers' responses across the two versions showed that the two versions elicited remarkably comparable performance. The comparability provides strong empirical evidence for the use of SGS as a viable alternative for human voice actor recordings in the immediate domain of L2 assessment as well as related domains such as learning material and research instrument development.

The purpose of this article is to present a step-by-step process for using self-monitoring to support college students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to achieve a variety of goals. Self-monitoring can be used with no technology (e.g., pencil and paper, tangible object placement) or technology-based applications (e.g., interval timers, mobile applications) in non-obtrusive and socially valid ways. College instructors, inclusive postsecondary education (IPSE) program staff, disability office support staff, and other service providers may use this article to guide in the design and implementation of a self-monitoring intervention for college students with ASD. As increasing numbers of transition-age youth with ASD are pursuing higher education, it is important to identify and disseminate a variety of interventions to enhance their college experiences, and self-monitoring is a viable intervention to consider.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate how the amount of home language use between the primary caregiver and bilingual Spanish- and English-speaking children with hearing loss who use cochlear implants (CIs) versus their bilingual age-matched peers with normal hearing (NH) can impact speech outcomes in the home language. Method: Thirty-four bilingual Spanish- and English-speaking children (17 CI users and 17 with NH) between the ages of 5;3 and 7;9 (years;months) participated in this study. Independent variables were the amount of home language use with the primary caregiver and hearing status, and dependent variables were vowels and consonants correctly produced and occurrence of selected phonological processes. The amount of home language use was ascertained from surveys, and the dependent measures were based on a single-word picture elicitation task. Bilingual children with CIs who are exposed to Spanish for more than 80% of the time via their primary caregiver performed better on Spanish segmental accuracy measures than those who are exposed to Spanish from only 20% to 50% of the time, specifically on vowels (partial [eta-squared] = 0.31) and consonants (partial [eta-squared] = 0.025). Children with NH outperformed children with CIs on all accuracy measures in Spanish. Conclusions: Preliminary results suggest the importance of language exposure through interactions with the primary caregiver for speech development in bilingual children. Future studies should investigate strategies to facilitate home language development in bilingual children with CIs, enabling them to reach their full potential.

The digital transformation of the educational landscape is an integral part of 21st-century learning, yet not all regions have capitalized on the benefits edtech brings. However, Northern Ireland's (NI's) education system presents a uniquely opportune environment for embracing edtech, acting as a veritable Goldilocks zone--where conditions appear just right for educational technology's successful deployment. This work provides a significant expansion to the range and depth of research into educational technologies in NI and important point of reference for schooling, internationally. Notably, the research reveals an urgent need for a robust teacher competence framework. This framework would focus on developing the digital skills of educators, which would, in turn, enhance their digital capital--the skills, knowledge, and attitudes toward digital technologies that enable meaningful engagement in digital activities. The findings also underscore the critical importance of a strategic vision in the application of digital technology in pedagogy.

There has been a massive shift in teaching quantitative political research since the "Journal of Political Science Education" was launched in 2004. Smartphones were an anomaly, and it was uncommon to have laptops in the classroom. Statistical calculations were sometimes done by "statisticians", i.e., professional staff who did calculations for faculty members. Today, it is rare to see students without electronics. Through that transition we experienced ubiquitous Wi-Fi and smartphones, statistical computing on personal computers, the end of the academic staff statistician, an explosion in open-source statistical software and tutorials, and an unexpected mass transition to online learning during COVID. We experienced a similar revolution in teaching statistics. Increases in computational power and data availability make quantitative and qualitative research different than 20 years ago. Computation is rarely a limiting factor, and we find ourselves spending more time on statistical assumptions, correct methods, data integrity, and replicability. We are now entering an era of assistive technology and will need to transition to teaching students how to use artificial intelligence tools to assist them with quantitative work. In this article, we consider these changes and what they mean for teaching political science in the next 20 years.

This narrative inquiry aimed to re-story the experiences of Paulina, a blind music education major, as she navigated her degree program at a large university. While scholars have begun to document the experiences of students who are blind or visually impaired in both PK-12 settings and during student teaching, no known study has explored the experience of a blind preservice student during their music education coursework. Utilizing critical disability studies as a lens, this narrative inquiry utilized the three commonplaces of temporality, sociality, and place to highlight Paulina's experience. Data included interviews, memos from all three researchers, emails and texts, conversations at a research conference, and informal conversations. Paulina's story centered around three themes: sight is mandatory here; the hope, promise, and failure of support; and the emotional toll and physical consequences. Implications from this study may inform preservice preparation programs as well as offer insights regarding combating ableism in any musical space.
