[Objective] Through the spatio-temporal dynamic analysis of landscape ecological pattern and habitat quality, the response of habitat quality before and after the implementation of soil and water conservation measures in PU River Basin of Shenyang City was deeply studied, aiming to provide scientific basis for soil and water conservation strategies in small river basins, so as to promote the coordinated growth f the eco-economy and the sustainable and healthy development of regional ecology. [Methods] Based on the and use data and Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of PU River Basin in 2000, 2010 and 2020, combined with he FRAGSTATS and InVEST models, land use transfer matrix, landscape pattern index, habitat quality and habitat degradation degree were used to analyze land use change and explore quality response situation. [Results] (1) During the period from 2000 to 2010, the cultivated land development activities in the PU River Basin were frequent, resulting in a significant decline in the proportion of forest, grassland and other land types; In the period from 2010 to 2020, the construction of the PU River ecological corridor will promote the change of land use, and the cultivated land area will flow to artificial surfaces, forests and grasslands. (2) During 2000 to 2020, the overall landscape pattern of the PU River Basin experienced a process of first becoming complete and then fragmentary. The landscape on both sides of the Puhe River formed a dense pattern of multiple elements, and the habitat in the northern edge of the urban center continued to fragment. From the overall analysis of the basin, the average habitat quality in 2000, 2010, and 2020 was 0.349, 0.329, and 0.354, respectively, showing a trend of first decreasing and then increasing. The mean values of habitat degradation were 0.098, 0.112, and 0.086, which were consistent with the trend in habitat quality. With the construction of the PU River Ecological Corridor, the quality of habitat will be improved significantly in 2020, and the threats to the ecosystem will be reduced. From the analysis of spatial pattern, the northeast and southwest show obvious spatial distribution characteristics. The quality of habitat in the mountainous areas of northeast China and the wetlands of southwest China is generally good, but there is a threat of habitat degradation. [Conclusion] Under the influence of soil and water conservation measures, the ecological pattern of the PU River Basin can be and the degradation of habitat can be effectively inhibited. With the development of the social economy, ecological environment damage has become increasingly serious, and how to better protect ecological security has gradually attracted people’s attention. This paper takes Hubei Province in China as the research object, using the PLUS model version 1.4 to design four development scenarios to predict land use and land cover changes (LUCC) in 2035: the natural development scenario (S1), the cultivated land protection scenario (S2), the ecological protection area restriction scenario (S3), and the ecological security pattern (ESP) restriction scenario (S4). The study evaluates the ecological effects under these four different scenarios using Conefor Sensinode 2.6 software, Fragstats v4.2.1 software, and the InVEST model. The conclusions are as follows: (1) ESP has better ecological landscape connectivity. (2) Comparing the ecological security indices of the four scenarios, they are 0.5378, 0.5288, 0.5318, and 0.5405, respectively, with the S4 scenario showing the best protection effect. (3) Comparing the habitat quality of the four scenarios, high-grade habitats degrade under S1 and S2 scenarios; homogenization occurs under S3 and S4 scenarios, but the retention rate of high-grade habitat areas is the highest under the S4 scenario. In conclusion, compared to natural progression and prioritizing cultivated land protection, implementing ecological protection policies yields better ecological effects, and a planned ESP provides more targeted policy recommendations.

Habitat quality (HQ) serves as a pivotal metric for assessing biodiversity and ecosystem health, with alterations in land use driven by human activities posing direct implications on HQ and ecological sustainability within river basins. Prior research on HQ has predominantly centered on historical land use changes, neglecting the comprehensive consideration of future land use transformations and ecological zoning strategies’ influence on HQ. Consequently, this investigation simulates potential land use shifts in the Min River Basin across various future scenarios, leveraging the integration of PLUS and InVEST models, quantitatively dissects HQ’s responsiveness to these changes and delves into the spatial differentiation dynamics underlying these responses, while also exploring the drivers behind such differentiation. Synergizing with the Human Footprint Index (HFI), the study devises a rational ecological zoning plan tailored to the region and outlines targeted control measures for each zone. The results of the study showed that: 1) the east-central part of the Min River Basin was subject to a greater degree of human interference, and the trend of interconversion between grassland, forest land, and cropland was relatively significant, with construction land mainly originating from the transfer of cropland; 2) from 2000 to 2020, average HQ scores for priority protected zones, priority recovery zones, and appropriate development zones stood at 0.9372, 0.2697, and 0.6098, respectively, accompanied by a rise in the proportion of low and moderate HQ areas to 15% and 17%; (3) DEM and Slope were the main drivers affecting HQ, and their explanatory power reached 0.519 and 0.426, respectively; (4) in comparison to a natural development scenario (ND), the planning protection scenario (PP) offers greater promise for ecological preservation and sustainable development within the Min River Basin. The research results can provide technical support for the ecological restoration of land resources and the development and protection of national land space in watershed areas.

Recently, rapid economic development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt region in China and the growing problem of regional habitat quality have seriously threatened the process of biodiversity conservation in the Yangtze River Basin. Studying the impact of changes in landscape pattern indexes on habitat quality in the Yangtze River Economic Belt can provide policy insights for biodiversity conservation in the Yangtze River Basin. However, existing studies are still lacking in exploring the effects of changing landscape pattern indices on habitat quality under future scenarios. Based on the land use data of the Yangtze River Economic Belt from 2000 to 2020, this study simulates the land use situation in 2030, and analyzes the landscape pattern indexes and habitat quality during the 30 years, to investigate the impact of landscape pattern indexes on habitat quality at global and local scales through various methods. The results show that landscape patterns were significantly affected by human activities and land use types, with the Yangtze River Economic Belt experiencing increased levels of land use and structural stabilization during the three decades (Shannon Diversity Index increased from 0.90 in 2000 to 0.94 in 2030), fragmentation of the landscape (Landscape fragmentation index increase from 0.094 in 2000 to 0.102 in 2030), and weakened connectivity (contagion index decrease from 48.213 in 2000 to 45.437 in 2030). The Habitat Quality has a large variation in spatial distribution at the county scale, with an average change in habitat quality of 1.04 % from 2000 to 2030, and an overall downward trend. There is a strong localized spatial autocorrelation between landscape pattern indices and habitat quality, with significant spatial heterogeneity and some form of variability at time scales. The results of this study help to further understand the eco-environmental problems of the Yangtze River Economic Belt, and provide theoretical references for the formulation of ecological environmental protection policies and ecological functional area planning.

Although the roles of tourism development and landscape value in the conservation of rice terraces have become increasingly important in recent years, rice terraces still face abandonment and desertification. Habitat quality (HQ) assessments evaluate the biodiversity conservation status of rice terraces; however, the spatial and temporal evolution of rice terrace HQ and influencing factors remains poorly understood. Here, a case study was performed of the Longji Terraces, Longsheng, Guangxi, China. Land use and land cover (LULC) remote sensing data for 1985–2020 (every 5 years) were obtained, and the InVEST-HQ model was used to evaluate and map the spatial and temporal evolution patterns and characteristics of HQ. A landscape pattern index and tourism indicators were combined and used to construct geographically weighted regression (GWR) models to explore the impact of tourism and landscape pattern on HQ. Our findings indicated that: (1) forests and terraces are the dominant landscape patches in Longji because they are better protected. Forest area and HQ changes exhibited temporal consistency, meaning that as forest area increased, HQ improved. (2) Longji Terraces exhibited optimum HQ overall, with a multi-year average of 0.977 and insignificant inter-annual variations. Spatially, the geographical HQ distribution was characterised by ‘low local levels, high global level.’ However, the percentage of HQ degraded areas in the final period reached 68 %, which is significantly greater than that of the improved areas (28 %). Moreover, improved areas had more spatial overlap with administrative villages that present superior tourism development. (3) HQ was significantly negatively correlated with night-time light (NTL), showed periodic changes (first negative, then positive) with Shannon’s diversity index (SHDI), was positively correlated with the contagion index (CONTAG), and showed periodic transitions (initially positive, then negative) with the mean of patch area (AREA_MN), population (POP), and patch density (PD). (4) Over time, the study area HQ showed weaker clustering and increased dispersion. In addition, the influence of tourism and landscape patterns increased from 2000 to 2020, with R2 increasing from 0.42 to 0.95. The results establish a scientific foundation for the conservation of rice terraces and sustainable use of landscape resources.

Global biodiversity is still being lost at an alarming rate. How to slow the destruction of habitats to protect biodiversity is an urgent issue. As one of the most rapidly developing and active economic regions in China, the habitat quality assessment and impact factor analysis in the Yangtze River Delta region are important for promoting socio-economic development and improving the local ecological environment. The InVEST mode and Geodetector method was used to explore the spatial and temporal variations of the habitat quality and its driving factors in the Yangtze River Delta region. The results show that the averaged habitat quality index showed a decreasing trend during 1980–2020, which accounted about 71.86 % of the Yangtze River Delta region. The habitat quality showed an overall spatial pattern of high in the south and low in the north, and the regional distribution of low habitat quality was dominated. The Moran's I values were larger than 0.8 during 1980–2020, showing a significant positive spatial correlation and a high degree of spatial clustering. The high-high clusters of habitat quality were mainly located in the southwest of the study area, while the low-low clusters were mainly located in the north. During 2025–2060, the habitat quality under the three scenarios exhibited SSP1-RCP19 > SSP2-RCP45 > SSP5-RCP85 and all showed a trend of decreasing in the north of the study area and increasing in the south. Under the two scenarios SSP1-RCP19 and SSP2-RCP45, the habitat quality generally showed an increasing trend, while under the SSP5-RCP85 scenario, it showed a decreasing trend. The slope, DEM, precipitation, construction land index and their interactions played a dominant role in the spatio-temporal variations of the habitat quality. Therefore, the slope, DEM, precipitation and construction land index should be considered when formulating habitat quality protection countermeasures.

[Objective] To optimizing the pattern of territorial space development and coordinating the pattern of production-living-ecological space is the key task and fundamental way to achieve sustainable development in the future. [Methods] Based on the land use in Yunnan Province and combined with the natural and social development factors, the MOP-PLUS coupling model was used to simulate the changes of production-living-ecological space and its effects under three scenarios of economic priority, ecological priority and collaborative development in 2030. [Results] (1) Under the three scenarios, the economic benefit increased by 40.29%, 32.10% and 34.79%, the ecological benefit decreased by 0.89%, 0 (unchanged) and 0.06%, the average habitat quality decreased by 0.78%, 0.38% and 0.43%, and the average spatial conflict intensity increased by 2.79%, decreased by 1.21% and decreased by 2.32%. (2) Living space increased and ecological space decreased in the three scenarios. Production space only increased slightly in the economic priority scenario. In all cases, living space encroached on production space, and then production space plagued ecological space. The expansion of living space showed a trend of encroaching from the center to the periphery. (3) Habitat quality decreased to some extent under different development scenarios, and spatial conflicts could be balanced by optimizing spatial layout. Compared with other scenarios, the growth of economic benefits in the collaborative development scenario was moderate, the variation range of habitat quality was relatively balanced, and the intensity of spatial conflicts decreased the most, which was in line with the multiple goals of ecological protection, economic development and social progress. [Conclusion] The simulation-effect-optimization feedback regulation mechanism formed in this paper can be combined with different scales and objectives to carry out land use change simulation and effect analysis, and provide a basis for decision-making of territorial space allocation.

This study assesses the impact of land acquisition for cooperative housing development on the land environment in Woldia town from 2004 -2024. Satellite imagery, Google Earth Pro, focus group discussions, personal observation and key informant interviews were used. The results revealed that the proportions of farmland decreased from 19.27 to 6 %, forest cover from 24.95 to 13.98 %, and bare land from 18.84 to 2.37 % for 2004–2024. The built-up increased significantly, from 11.35 to 49.62% during the specified year. The results further indicated that the quality of habitats decreased from 0.79 in 2014 to 0.63 in 2024, due to built-up areas, improper waste disposal, population growth, road expansion, and cooperative housing expansion. Strong negative correlations between habitat quality status and the number of years of habitat quality assessment, built-up areas, waste disposal, population density, roads, and cooperative housing were observed while forest cover showed a strong positive correlation. These problems can be managed through the application of zoning laws, urban planning, compact development, mixed-use development, the promotion of sustainable land use practices, the protection of critical habitats, the development and implementation of policies to increase forest cover, and increasing public awareness. The novel component of this study is the preparation of maps for habitat quality due to land acquisition for cooperative housing development, and to aid in the accomplishment of two 2030 Sustainable Development Goals: goal number 11 (making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable) and goal number 15 (protecting, restoring, and promoting the sustainable use of land ecosystems, managing forests sustainably, and stopping land degradation and biodiversity loss). The findings inform decision-makers and planners to plan and manage the land environment sustainably.

Rich resources and fragile ecosystems of estuaries are increasingly impacted by land use and land cover (LULC). However, previous studies of habitat quality (HQ) typically do not model the impact of LULC in Southeast Asian estuaries. Here, we used the Integrated Valuation of Environmental Services and Trade-offs (InVEST) model and the Patch-generating Land-Use Simulation (PLUS) model to assess and predict HQ and habitat degradation in the Johor River Estuary (JRE) from 1989 to 2047. Habitat quality contribution rate (HQCR) was used to quantify the impact of land-use changes on HQ. We analyzed the correlation and spatio-temporal changes in LULC and HQ, respectively. Our forecasts show (1) Construction land expanding more than 10 times from 1989 to 2047. (2) HQ increases slightly followed by a continuous decrease in the habitat quality index (HQI). (3) Degradation of HQI was from forests, agricultural land, residential land expansion and land reclamation. (4) Population growth, economic development, and national development policies may pose significant future threats to water, land, and marine traffic in the Johor River. Our results show that land-use changes affect HQ and future development of the JRE should integrate the impacts of natural and human factors on LULC changes.

ABSTRACTLand use/cover change is a major cause of ecological degradation. Reliable LUCC data are essential for evaluating habitat quality. The current method of surface cover classification based on the convolutional neural networks (CNNs) is usually a local spatial operation using a regular convolutional kernel, which ignores the correlation between adjacent image elements. This paper proposes a combination network with two branches, branch 1 uses the K-nearest neighbor clustering algorithm to construct superpixels and then uses the data transformation module to construct a graph attention network (GAT); branch 2 constructs the CNN using attention and residual modules to obtain the spatial and higher-order semantic information of the images. Finally, the features are fused using weighted fusion, and a classification map with less point noise and greater consistency with the real surface coverage is obtained. The classification results of this network are better than those of the other competitive methods. In addition, the urbanization of Sanya has resulted in significant habitat degradation. A good fit ([Formula: see text] in 2020 = 0.639) between habitat quality (HQ) and natural and socioeconomic factors was observed in Sanya. Natural factors are more relevant to HQ than socioeconomic factors and vary spatially.

Climate change is an increasing cause of biodiversity loss. The extinction of species is the most dramatic case, but also a large number of species will be forced to migrate due to the loss of habitat. We conducted a study on the current distribution of Warburgia salutaris (Canellaceae), one of the wild harvested medicinal plant species endangered through the effects of bark harvesting and land transformation, as well as the potential future distribution, extent of occurrence and habitat quality under climate change. For that, we used current occurrence data and uncorrelated environmental variables for the years 2040–2100, under four future Shared Socio-economic Pathways (SSPs) scenarios (SSP126, SSP245, SSP370, and SSP585) for four general climatic models (GCMs). A mobility-oriented parity was conducted to identify extrapolation risk. Future prediction indicated a considerable increase of highly suitable areas under all SSPs scenarios in almost all the GCMs in southern Mozambique compared to the current distribution. Overall, the suitable area and its habitat quality increased steadily in 80 years compared to the current situation. Hence, climate change could not be argued as a threat to W. salutaris for the studied period. In this context, actions such as reintroduction and cultivation to provide alternative sources of bark supply, could be capitalised to alleviate pressure on natural populations while allowing their recovery and the establishment of new core populations.

Recent developments in Unmanned Aircraft Vehicles (UAVs), thermal imaging, and Auto-machine learning (AutoML) have shown high potential for precise wildlife surveys but have rarely been studied for habitat assessment. Here, we propose a framework that leverages these advanced techniques to achieve cost-effective habitat quality assessment from the perspective of actual wildlife community usage. The framework exploits vision intelligence hidden in the UAV thermal images and AutoML methods to achieve cost-effective wildlife distribution mapping, and then derives wildlife use indicators to imply habitat quality variance. We conducted UAV-based thermal wildlife surveys at three wetlands in the Rainwater Basin, Nebraska. Experiments were set to examine the optimal protocols, including various flight designs (61 and 122 m), feature types, and AutoML. The results showed that UAV images collected at 61 m with a spatial resolution of 7.5 cm, combined with Faster R-CNN, returned the optimal wildlife mapping (more than 90% accuracy). Results also indicated that the vision intelligence exploited can effectively transfer the redundant AutoML adaptation cycles into a fully automatic process (with around 33 times efficiency improvement for data labeling), facilitating cost-effective AutoML adaptation. Understanding the spatial distributions of rarity and diversity is crucial for both targeted conservation efforts and elucidating the mechanisms that underpin species richness patterns. Existing studies suggest local communities with greater species richness also hold higher numbers of low abundance species. Rarity hotspots at the global scale tend to be spatially divergent from species richness hotspots and differ among many taxonomic groups, but much less work has been done to understand rarity patterns at the regional scale. Here, we used a large-scale dataset of comprehensive lichen diversity from a global biodiversity hotspot in eastern North America to explore the relationships of rarity, species richness, and elevation, while also examining the key plot characteristics that support increased rarity within the system. We found a mid-elevation slump in lichen rarity, with increased rarity at low and high elevations, contrasting with the mid-elevation hump in species richness for lichens in the same system. Additionally, important plot-level predictors of rarity changed with elevation. Rocky, open habitats hosted increased levels of rarity at low elevations, and the highest, coldest plots at the high elevations also hosted increased levels of rarity. Our results illustrate a contrast between elevational patterns and important plot characteristics for lichen rarity and species richness, suggesting a need for separate, complementary conservation efforts to protect both areas with high species richness and areas with high numbers of rare species. The impacts of urban forest fragmentation on tropical ant foraging activity are poorly understood. The Malaysian giant ant (Dinomyrmex gigas) is among the largest ant species worldwide. Colonies of this species contribute to important ecosystem processes such as predation and nutrient cycling in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia.Here, we compared the diurnal foraging activity of D. gigas workers in urban‐fragmented and contiguous forests, and investigated how this was shaped by key environmental factors such as vegetation structure and microclimate. Specifically, we sampled ground‐foraging D. gigas workers in four urban/semi‐urban forest patches and two contiguous forests in Peninsular Malaysia across the wet and dry seasons.Surprisingly, we found that some urban forest patches, irrespective of area, supported greater foraging activity of D. gigas workers than contiguous forests. These differences in foraging activity were explained by differences in multiple stand‐level variables between urban forests patches and contiguous forests. Specifically, the abundance of foraging D. gigas workers increased with number of trees with Diamater at breast height (DBH) 5–30 cm, but it decreased with relative humidity, canopy cover, number of palms, number of shrubs and trees with DBH <5 cm.Our study highlights the importance of urban forest patches, microclimate and vegetation structure for driving the diurnal foraging activity of Malaysian giant ant. Small and relatively large forest patches were of comparable importance for the maintenance of biodiversity in urban landscapes.In the absence of landscape connectivity, reforestation is the most feasible option to restore the natural habitat of D. gigas in urban forest patches and mitigate microclimatic edge effects. Nonbreeding raptors are vulnerable to many anthropogenic changes such as habitat fragmentation and increasing risk of collision (e.g., with wind turbines, powerlines, or vehicles). One aspect of habitat quality for raptors during winter has received comparably less attention: the role of colonial burrowing rodents such as prairie dogs (Cynomys spp.) as a reliable food source, and the effects of widespread reduction in prairie dog abundance and availability to nonbreeding raptors. We used a historical dataset (1998–2002) of roadside surveys for raptors and prairie dogs in the Southern and Central Great Plains, including Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas, USA, and the Mexican state of Chihuahua, to provide the most spatially and temporally expansive analysis to date of the potential role of prairie dogs in influencing presence and abundance of raptors. We assessed patterns of co-occurrence among raptors and prairie dogs and modeled the response of selected species to weather, latitude, grassland cover, and prairie dog presence and abundance at multiple spatial scales. During the study period, we detected 19 species of raptors and identified nine raptor species that co-occurred with prairie dogs more than expected by chance. We also found evidence that occurrence of prairie dogs was related to presence and/or abundance of Ferruginous Hawks (Buteo regalis), Golden Eagles (Aquila chrysaetos), Bald Eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus), and Rough-legged Hawks (B. lagopus). Our work underscores the association of prairie dogs with many wintering raptor species, especially Ferruginous Hawks and Golden Eagles, and indicates that prairie dogs may also be an important resource for Rough-legged Hawks and Bald Eagles during the nonbreeding season. The contribution of biodiversity to the global economy, human survival, and welfare has been significantly increasing. However, nature reserves have long been subject to a sequence of ecological environmental issues caused by human activities. Therefore, quantitatively assessing the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of habitat quality due to land use changes and exploring the mechanisms of potential influencing factors can provide a scientific basis for the stable and sustainable development of natural ecosystems. This study aims to analyze 18 nature reserves in Hubei Province to identify the spatiotemporal evolution of habitat quality within these reserves and to explore the influence of multifactorial dynamics from nature, humanity, and policy on this evolution. Initially, the study utilizes land use transition matrices and land use dynamic degree methods to understand the spatiotemporal characteristics of land conversion within the study area. Subsequently, it analyzes the spatiotemporal changes in habitat quality from 2000–2020 based on the InVEST model and tools like spatial autocorrelation (Moran's I) in ArcGIS. Finally, 14 potential influencing factors are selected from natural environment, socio-human, and policy regulation aspects and analyzed in the Geodetector software to understand the factors affecting the spatiotemporal evolution of habitat quality. The results show that, during the study period, the land area of 18 nature reserves in Hubei Province increased from 2000 to 2020, while the water area decreased. There were slight increases in farmland, construction land, and forest land, with significant decreases in grassland and water areas. This reveals the erosion of water bodies due to artificial lake filling during rapid urbanization, leading to a decline in overall habitat quality within the reserves and a gradual increase in spatial heterogeneity. Among the influencing factors, single-factor influences such as land use intensity and distance to county roads and slopes have a strong negative linear relationship with habitat quality, with land use intensity being the most significant human activity factor. The interaction strength among different types of influencing factors in the bivariate interaction detection results is ranked as follows: the interaction between natural geographical and socio-human factors > the interaction within socio-human factors > the interaction within natural geographical factors. This study has diverged from the past focus on the selection of a single continuous natural reserve as the empirical subject. Consequently, it allows for an integrated analysis of physical geographical dimensions such as locational topography with socio-cultural and policy elements including land use and transportation facilities, thereby facilitating a multifactorial assessment of the interactive impacts on habitat quality. The physical foundation and environmental assurance provided by the regional habitat are crucial for the survival and sustainable development of organisms. Land use change, as a significant manifestation of human activity, is a crucial factor in habitat quality. An SD-PLUS coupled model was developed to simulate land use change in the Baiyangdian(BYD) Basin using data on land use, socio-economic factors, and the climatic environment from 2000 to 2020. The InVEST model was employed to assess the habitat quality of the basin from 2000 to 2050. The findings indicated the following: Between 2020 and 2050, the predominant land use changes across the three scenarios involve the conversion of farmland to construction land and grassland to woodland. The magnitude of these changes steadily declines over time. The magnitude of change in land use for all kinds was greater under SSP5 compared to SSP1 and SSP2. The movement of habitat quality grades primarily occurred from higher grades to lower grades. In 2050, the habitat quality is projected to improve compared to 2020 under three different scenarios. Introduction: As a key indicator to evaluate biodiversity and eco-function, habitat quality shows the value of ecosystem services. The Qinghai--Tibet Plateau occupies the highest elevation in the global dimension, where the regional environment is greatly affected by multiple factors including the terrain comprehensively. Methods: In the present study, the InVEST model was employed to assess the habitat quality across varying terrain gradients. The study observed the displacement of the center of gravity of habitat quality under different topographical factors over the past 20 years to learn the trend of changes. Additionally, the Geo-detector model was enhanced to explore the contribution rate of driving factors including biodiversity in different topographic positions and overall. Results: The results found the following: (1) The habitat quality of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau was positively correlated with the terrain gradient, and the mean values of habitat quality increased with the gradual increase in terrain gradient. In the period between 2000 and 2020, mean habitat quality values within the study area exhibited a slight fluctuating trend with the spatial distribution characterized by higher values in the southeast and lower values in the northwest. (2) Among different terrain gradients, trends in the mean center's shift of habitat quality were diverse. The mean center of gradient I went north but gradient V went west. The mean center of the habitat quality in gradients II--IV showed an uncertain trend. (3) The NDVI exerted the most vital influence on the quality of habitats irrespective of different terrain gradients. Annual mean temperature, soil type, and slope occupied two to four places in each terrain. Discussion: The study indicates that in the last two decades, the habitat quality on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has gradually increased across different terrain locations. Understanding habitat quality patterns and their drivers in arid zones is of fundamental importance to the sustainability maintenance of terrestrial ecosystems, but remains elusive. Here, we applied the InVEST model to investigate the spatiotemporal patterns of habitat quality in the northern sand-prevention belt (NSPB) across five time periods (2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, 2018), coupled with the structural equation model (SEM) and boosted regression tree (BRT) model to identify their integrated driving forces. The results exhibited that habitat quality in high-level zones expanded gradually from 2000 to 2018, while the middle- and low-level zones shrank. Climate, soil, topography, and human activities were significantly correlated with habitat quality, with mean annual temperature (MAT) and human activities being key contributing factors in the high-level and low-level zones, respectively, whereas the contribution of factors varied considerably in the middle-level zones. The interactions among climate, soil, topography, and human activities jointly drive habitat quality changes. Climate intensified the positive effects of soil on habitat quality, while the topographic and human activities mainly affected habitat quality indirectly through climate and soil. It has been recognized that the timing of disturbance, in addition to its intensity and frequency, is important for the population dynamics of organisms because the impact of the disturbance depends on the life history stage at which it occurs (i.e., egg, larva, or adult). However, the effects of disturbance timing on consumer population dynamics have not been explored. This study simultaneously estimated the effects of mowing frequency and timing on the subpopulation dynamics of the endangered grassland butterfly, Plebejus argyrognomon. A two-year investigation of a metapopulation of P. argyrognomon consisting of approximately 150 habitat patches revealed that subpopulation size decreased with increasing mowing frequency, in addition to the positive effect of patch area and habitat connectivity. With the mowing frequency fixed at once per year, subpopulation size maximized when mowing occurred during the adult period in the previous generation, presumably due to reduced impact in the high-mobility adult stage. By mowing during this period, subpopulation size was maintained at several times higher than mowing during the larval period. It is suggested that disturbance timing should be incorporated into the conservation of metapopulations in human-managed landscapes. Implications for insect conservation: Reducing mowing frequency is important for the conservation of P. argyrognomon. Accurate identification of key areas for ecological restoration is an important foundation for orderly promotion of ecological restoration of territorial space. This study identified the key areas for ecological restoration in Kangbao County according to the research paradigm of "source identification -- resistance surface construction -- corridor extraction". First, ecological source sites were identified and screened based on habitat quality modeling, morphological spatial pattern analysis and landscape connectivity analysis. Then, the base resistance surface was constructed using ArcGIS software and nighttime light data. Thereafter, ecological corridors were extracted and ecological pinch points and ecological barrier points identified with the Linkage Mapper plug-in. Forty ecological source sites with a total area of 68.06 km2 were identified in Kangbao County. These sites were dominated by woodland and grassland, and the integrity of these ecological source sites still needed to be improved. The 96 ecological corridors (total length of 743.81 km) were identified, which were densely distributed in the south and east parts of the study area, and there is still much room for improvement of the habitat connectivity. Additionally, 75 ecological pinch points (total area of 31.72 km2) and 69 ecological obstacles (total area of 16.42 km2) were identified. The key areas to be restored were mainly distributed in Yan Yufang, Har Chimega, Tuchengzi, Zhangji, and Danchenghe Townships. In this paper, we use the InVEST model and five periods of land use data from 1980 to 2020 to assess the habitat quality of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in Western China, which has characteristics of a typical fragile ecosystem. We further analyse the spatial and temporal characteristics of habitat quality evolution and its relationship with land use and landscape pattern indices to explore the close relationship between regional habitat quality changes and human natural resource conservation and utilization. The research results show that the overall habitat quality of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region was stable and at a moderate level (0.57–0.60) during the 40 years from 1980 to 2020; Habitat patches (2020) with low (24.89%), high (22.45%) and very high (29.81%) quality occupy a larger proportion of the area, followed by very low (13.31%) and moderate levels (9.54%). Over the past 40 years, there have been 275 sample sites in Ningxia where habitat quality has deteriorated, 1593 sample sites where the habitat quality has remained stable, and 184 sample sites where the habitat quality has increased. From 1980 to 2020, the Mean Patch Area of landscape types in Ningxia decreased by 25.9 hm2. The Patch Density increased by 0.06 /hm2. The Largest Patch Index decreased by 15.69%. The Edge Density increased by 2.5 m/hm2. The Contagion Index decreased by 2.99%. The Area‐Weighted Mean Patch Fractal Dimension remained basically unchanged (0.01). The Landscape Shape Index showed a trend of first increasing and then decreasing, increasing by 13.94. The Area‐Weighted Mean Shape Index has been reduced by 9.45. The Shannon Diversity Index and Shannon Evenness Index both show an increasing trend, but the amplitude is relatively small, with 0.09 and 0.04, respectively. There was a significant spatial aggregation of high and low habitat quality in Ningxia, with high values usually distributed in the northern and southern areas with good natural conditions and low values distributed in areas with frequent human activities and poor natural conditions. The decrease in habitat quality in Ningxia was mainly due to the expansion of cultivated land and construction land, the increase in landscape fragmentation and the resulting decrease in connectivity. On the other hand, due to the implementation of ecological protection measures, such as the project of returning farmland to pasture and grass to forest, the quality of habitats in Ningxia increased. The conclusions of this study support the idea that the conservation of habitat quality in ecologically fragile areas should fully preserve the original natural habitats and reduce the interference of human activities to increase the habitat suitability of the landscape and the habitat connectivity between patches. At the same time, targeted ecological protection policies should be developed to restore the areas where the habitat quality has been damaged and ultimately maintain the stability of biodiversity and ecosystems in ecologically fragile areas. Meanwhile, for ecologically fragile areas with similar ecological characteristics to those of Ningxia, our research supports the idea of increasing the protection of the stability of the original habitats, increasing the proportion of ecological restoration projects, financial investment and seeking cooperation with local community managers and residents will help to improve the quality of the regional habitats and the enrichment of the biodiversity, and ultimately promote the harmonious coexistence of human beings and nature in the modernized sense of the word. Investigating habitat quality under different climate scenarios holds significant importance for sustainable land resource management and ecological conservation. In this study, considering Nanchang as a case study, a coupled patch-generating land use simulation (PLUS) and system dynamics (SD) model was employed in the simulation and prediction of land usage under shared socioeconomic pathway (SSP) and representative concentration pathway (RCP) scenarios. To assess the habitat quality in Nanchang from 2000 to 2020 and in 2030 under three diverse climate scenarios, we used the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Trade-offs (InVEST) model to analyze spatial and temporal changes. The findings indicate that the regions of forest land, cultivated land, and grassland in Nanchang City will dramatically decrease by 2030, the construction land will rapidly expand, and the fluctuations in the unutilized land and water area will be minimal. Additionally, the habitat quality declined from 2000 to 2020, and its spatial distributions changed. Zones having a high overall habitat quality were distributed in the mountains, hills, and lake areas, whereas those with relatively low quality were found in cultivated and urban areas. Under three climate scenarios, in 2030, the habitat quality index for Nanchang City will show a decreasing trend, mainly owing to areas with an index of 0.3–0.5 transitioning to <0.3. Considering each scenario, the degree of habitat degradation increased in the order SSP585>SSP245>SSP119. Biodiversity is profoundly influenced by habitat quality, and Harbin, a provincial capital situated in a cold climate zone, stands out as one of China's regions most susceptible to the repercussions of climate change. To ensure the city's continued sustainable growth, a thorough assessment of habitat quality must be conducted. This study employs a comprehensive approach integrating the InVEST model, the PLUS model, a landscape pattern analysis, geographic detector, and a geographically weighted regression model. The goal is to assess how land use and habitat quality have changed in Harbin City, investigate factors contributing to spatial heterogeneity in habitat quality, thoroughly examine evolutionary patterns under the inertial development scenario from 2030 to 2050, and propose spatial optimization strategies. There are four key findings. First, from 2000 to 2020, agricultural land and forest were Harbin City's two most prevalent land use types. The most notable transition occurred from forest to grassland, and the expansion of construction land primarily resulted from its encroachment into agricultural areas. Second, within the area of study, the landscape heterogeneity increased while simultaneously experiencing a decrease in connectivity, and the landscape had a tendency toward a more fragmented spatial distribution. Third, overall habitat quality rose between 2000 and 2020 but declined between 2030 and 2050. There was a "weak in the west and high in the east" distribution pattern in the spatial heterogeneity of habitat quality. Fourth, population density has the most impact on habitat quality, with the NDVI and GDP close behind. Conversely, precipitation and slope had comparatively smaller influences on habitat quality. Natural factors combined had a primarily favorable influence on habitat quality across the research region in terms of spatial distribution. Conversely, population density had a discernibly detrimental impact. Given these findings, this study suggests targeted strategies to optimize habitat quality. These recommendations are relevant not only for biodiversity conservation but also for the development of an ecologically sustainable community, particularly in a cold climate region. It is of great practical significance to regional ecological conservation and restoration to explore the spatiotemporal variation characteristics of habitat quality in the ecologically fragile Loess Plateau. This study firstly explored the habitat quality in the Loess Plateau during 2000-2020 with the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Trade-offs model. Then this study revealed the response characteristics of habitat quality to the fractional vegetation cover (FVC) change and human disturbance with the geographically weighted regression (GWR) model. Results showed habitat quality tended to improve in 51.16% of the study area, and area of high or very high habitat quality increased by 1.78%. Besides, FVC showed dominantly significant increase (62.42%) and high stability (69.66%) in the study area, and human disturbance increased remarkably in 18.11% of the study area but maintained the same level in 91.83% of the study area. Additionally, areas with positive correlation between habitat quality change and FVC and between habitat quality change and human disturbance change accounted for 52.56% and 37.38% of the study area, respectively, indicating FVC played dominant role in affecting the regional habitat quality variation. This research investigates the relationships between habitat quality, soil characteristics, topography and landscape metrics across soil zones and sub-basins of the Qeshlagh dam in western Iran. InVEST software was applied to determine habitat quality while soil characteristics were interpolated through the Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) method using ArcGIS software. The results revealed that the higher habitat quality throughout the Qeshlagh basin is distributed on upland including northern and eastern parts and also western strips of the basin. Dense urban land use and agricultural development were amongst the factors for declining habitat quality in central and southern parts of the study area. Statistical analysis showed that there are significant relationships of habitat quality to characteristics of soil, topography and landscape features throughout soil zones and sub-basins while the scale of sampling may impact the results. Also, it was emphasized that the habitat quality is influenced by the landscape pattern. In this regard cohesiveness of the largest landscape spot was highly influential. It is suggested that land management pathways regarding the rate and magnification of the degradation of the habitat quality should be considered and urgent conservative measures need to be applied to improve habitat quality across the basin. Context. Measuring the quality of habitats necessary for the survival of threatened species is a priority for conservation management, but traditional metrics are often too costly to implement. As a result, many practitioners rely on proxies such as habitat suitability, which are measured by relating environmental variables to species occurrence data using habitat suitability models. However, little research has examined how these proxies relate to actual measures of habitat quality, such as body condition. Aim. By testing the relationship between habitat suitability and habitat quality – as characterised by mean population fitness – the aim of this study was to improve our understanding of ways in which we can reliably map habitat of high importance for a particular species, as well as habitats where populations are most susceptible to local extinction. Methods. We used data from a large-scale monitoring program on the northern quoll (Dasyurus hallucatus), a threatened marsupial predator, which collected data on three measures of population mean fitness (measured as body mass accounting for size, tail circumference, and body mass). We correlated these measures with habitatsuitability derived from a habitatsuitability model. Key results. We found quoll mean population fitness increased with increasing habitat suitability. In addition, we found mean population fitness increased with increasing topographic ruggedness, annual rainfall, rainfall variability, and decreasing distance to water, consistent with previous studies that suggest quolls are able to persist better in habitat where resource availability (shelter, food) is higher. Conclusions. Our findings demonstrate the usefulness of habitat suitability models for predicting habitat quality for a threatened predator at a large scale, and that predictions of habitat suitability can correspond with measures of fitness. In addition, they support previous studies in highlighting the importance of topographically complex habitat for this species. Implications. These findings have important implications for identifying both source populations, where species recruitment is likely to exceed mortality, and more vulnerable populations that may require targeted conservation interventions to ensure their long-term persistence and stability. Habitat loss is an important factor in global biodiversity loss, but categorizing human-modified landscapes as fragments of natural or anthropogenic habitats may underestimate our impact on biodiversity since most natural fragments suffer from chronic anthropogenic disturbances. Here, we tested the synergistic effect between habitat loss and chronic anthropogenic disturbances on ant communities of the Caatinga, a seasonally dry tropical forest in South America. From online sources and published material, we built a data-set containing information on habitat loss and chronic anthropogenic disturbance index, as well as its vectors (i.e., human population density, infrastructure, logging, fire, and grazing), for 23 Caatinga localities containing information on ant community composition. Generalized linear models demonstrated that habitat loss interacts with chronic anthropogenic disturbance to determine total ant richness and the richness of habitat specialist ants. Furthermore, habitat loss interacts synergistically with several vectors of chronic anthropogenic disturbances to determine ant richness. In general, the effect of habitat loss is exacerbated by human population density, infrastructures, logging, and grazing. The proportion of habitat specialists in the communities did not respond to habitat loss or chronic anthropogenic vectors, suggesting that both ant groups were equally affected by habitat alterations. Although habitat amount is an important predictor of the integrity of the local biodiversity, it tends to underestimate our impact on biological communities. Ecosystem surface plays an important role in maintaining ecological balance and supporting economic development. Accurate and effective identification of ecosystem surface with different ecological uses allows for better categorization and management and contributes to the orderly restoration of ecosystems. In this study, the Human Footprint Index (HFI) is constructed by comprehensively considering the factors of biodiversity, human activity impacts, and geometric features, and combined with the multi-factor knowledge constraints such as changes in land cover. We carry out accurate and effective identification and analysis of ecosystem surfaces, using Changzhou City’s tree cover as a test area. The results show that: (1) The degree of tree cover affected by human activities in Changzhou City varies greatly, and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and elevation are the main factors affecting the level of the HFI. (2) The distribution of native ecosystem surface and artificial ecosystem surface are uneven, with more than 95% of native ecosystem surfaces distributed in the peripheral areas of the city with higher elevations and farther away from the city center. Artificial ecosystem surfaces are more likely to be found in areas with high GDP and frequent human activities, mainly in urban centers with a large proportion of buildings and along roads. (3) The overall identification accuracy of the ecosystem surface is 83.20%, which is higher in the urban center area with a large proportion of buildings and slightly lower in the area with a large proportion of agricultural production land. The results of the study provide a method for the objective, accurate and effective identification of ecosystem surface, which can improve the enthusiasm of local governments in fulfilling their ecological protection duties and contribute to the efficient achievement of the goal of ecological civilization construction.

Continued population loss in the context of urban shrinkage has led to the transformation and reconfiguration of urban land use space, which in turn has had a major impact on regional habitats and ecosystem services. To explore the status of habitat quality (HQ) in shrinking cities, based on land use data from 2010 to 2020, this study uses the InVEST model to analyze the spatiotemporal characteristics of HQ in shrinking cities. Then, we reveal the shrinkage effect of HQ in shrinking cities from the perspective of population change rate, and detect the dominant influencing factors of HQ in different types of shrinking cities with the help of geographical detector. The results show that:(1) From 2010 to 2020, the primary land use types in both shrinking and non-shrinking cities of the three northeastern provinces were forestland and cropland. However, there were significant differences in the area of construction land between the two categories of cities. (2) The HQ in both shrinking and non-shrinking cities showed a declining trend, yet the HQ index of shrinking cities was higher than that of non-shrinking cities. (3) The distribution of HQ in shrinking cities has a significant shrinkage effect, and HQ index gradually strengthens as urban shrinkage intensifies. Low-quality habitats have a strong distributional advantage in slightly shrinking cities, while severely shrinking cities tend to be dominated by high-quality habitats. (4) Population profile, economic development, industrial structure and built environment are important factors influencing the spatial heterogeneity of HQ in shrinking cities. However, the spatial determinants of HQ vary significantly among different types of shrinking cities in terms of dimensions and indicators, with two-factor interactions exerting a stronger influence than single-factor impacts. Based on the findings of this study, the government can formulate differentiated habitat protection measures, dynamically adjust, and optimize them according to the distribution characteristics of HQ grades in shrinking cities.

Under the influences of climate change and human activities, habitat quality (HQ) in inland river basins continues to decline. Studying the spatiotemporal distributions of land use and HQ can provide support for sustainable development strategies of the ecological environment in arid regions. Therefore, this study utilized the SD-PLUS model, InVEST-HQ model, and Geodetector to assess and simulate the land-use changes and HQ in the Tarim River Basin (TRB) at multiple scales (county and grid scales) and scenarios (SSP126, SSP245, and SSP585). The results indicated that (1) the Figure of Merit (FoM) values for Globeland 30, China’s 30 m annual land-cover product, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (30 m) product were 0.22, 0.12, and 0.15, respectively. A comparison of land-use datasets with different resolutions revealed that the kappa value tended to decline as the resolution decreased. (2) In 2000, 2010, and 2020, the HQ values were 0.4656, 0.4646, and 0.5143, respectively. Under the SSP126 and SSP245 scenarios, the HQ values showed an increasing trend: for the years 2030, 2040, and 2050, they were 0.4797, 0.4834, and 0.4855 and 0.4805, 0.4861, and 0.4924, respectively. Under SSP585, the HQ values first increased and then decreased, with values of 0.4791, 0.4800, and 0.4766 for 2030, 2040, and 2050, respectively. (3) Under three scenarios, areas with improved HQ were mainly located in the southern and northern high mountain regions and around urban areas, while areas with diminished HQ were primarily in the western part of the basin and central urban areas. (4) At the county scale, the spatial correlation was not significant, with Moran’s I ranging between 0.07 and 0.12, except in 2000 and 2020. At the grid scale, the spatial correlation was significant, with clear high- and low-value clustering (Moran’s I between 0.80 and 0.83). This study will assist land-use planners and policymakers in formulating sustainable development policies to promote ecological civilization in the basin.

As urbanization accelerates worldwide, understanding the impact of urban expansion on habitat quality has become increasingly critical in environmental science research. This study examines the impact of urban expansion on habitat quality in Beijing, forecasting land cover changes and ecological effects by 2030. Using CA–Markov and FLUS models, the research analyzes habitat quality from 2000 to 2030 through the InVEST model, revealing a significant urban land increase of 1316.47 km2 and a consequent habitat quality decline. Predictions for 2030 indicate varying habitat quality outcomes across three scenarios: ecological priority (0.375), natural growth (0.373), and urban development (0.359). We observed that the natural growth scenario forecasts a further decline in habitat quality, primarily due to increased low–value habitat regions. Conversely, the ecological priority scenario projects a notable improvement in habitat quality. To mitigate habitat degradation in Beijing and enhance regional habitat quality and ecological conditions, it is recommended to control urban land cover expansion, adopt effective ecological conservation policies, and systematically carry out national spatial restructuring and ecological restoration. This research provides vital decision–making support for urban planning and ecological conservation, emphasizing the need for comprehensive land cover and ecological strategies in urban development. Additionally, our findings and methodologies are applicable to other rapidly urbanizing cities worldwide. This demonstrates the broader applicability and relevance of our research, providing a framework for sustainable urban planning in diverse global contexts.

China’s national park establishment aims to achieve a balance between ecological conservation and regional development. This study adopts a production–living–ecological (PLE) space perspective to evaluate the park’s impact. By quantifying changes and employing a combination of geographic detector and coupling coordination degree analyses, this research explores the dynamics of habitat quality and PLE space within the Wuyishan region, alongside their interrelationships. The national park’s influence on the surrounding area exhibits spatial heterogeneity, evident both within and beyond park boundaries, as well as across different counties. Despite the concentration of PLE changes in the park’s vicinity, particularly in densely populated urban areas, the influence of the national park on the local area is random and primarily at a low level. Importantly, the ecological space exhibits substantial changes, mirroring improvements in habitat quality. Furthermore, the coupling coordination between habitat quality changes and PLE space changes exhibits remarkable spatial variations. The complex interrelationships among PLE space necessitate a coordinated approach to their development for effective national park management. Ultimately, this investigation provides a novel perspective for the assessment of Wuyishan National Park’s conservation effectiveness, contributing practical value for future endeavors.

Assessing the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of habitat quality, human footprint, and coupling coordination between two systems in continuous cycles and on national scales is of great significance to maintaining biodiversity and sustainable development. This study took China as an example, based on land-use data from 2000 to 2020, using the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs—Habitat Quality (InVEST-HQ) model and the human footprint framework, coupling trend analysis methods such as Theil–Sen Median Analysis, Mann–Kendall Test, and Grid Transition Matrix (GTM) Method and combining the four-quadrant model and the coupling coordination degree model (CCDM) to reveal the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of habitat quality, human footprint, and CCDM in China for 21 consecutive years and the response relationship between the two systems of habitat quality and human footprint. The results show that the land cover change area from 2000 to 2020 accounted for 4.2% of the total area. Both habitat quality and human footprints exhibit apparent spatial heterogeneity along the “Hu Line” and generally fall into two evolutionary stages: “degradation–improvement”. The proportions of degradation and improvement were 14.37% and 8.36%, respectively, and the mutation point was in the year 2013; the average human footprint increased by 16.75%, and the increased and decreased area proportions were 63.40% and 21.53%, respectively. The mutation occurred in 2014. The right side of the “Hu Line” primarily hosts areas with high values of the coordinated coupling index of human footprints and habitat quality systems. The four quadrants generally have the following characteristics: “quadrant IV on the right is dominant, quadrants II and III on the left are dominant, and quadrant I is located in the transition zone of the ‘Hu Line’”. The coupling coordination degree (CCD) and human footprints have a weak, nonlinear “inverted U-shaped” relationship. This study provides compelling evidence for the spatiotemporal evolution and coupling relationship between habitat quality and human footprint in China, provides scientific decision-making support for biodiversity protection and sustainable economic development, and maintains the bottom line of ecological security for a beautiful China.

In recent years, increasing urbanization has profoundly impacted the quality of regional habitats, presenting a severe risk to the ability of a region to develop in a high-quality manner. Therefore, the scientific assessment of the features of habitat quality (HQ) evolution over time and space and the prediction of future trends in changes in the HQ are of great significance for the formulation of effective ecological protection policies. Based on five periods of land use and land cover (LULC) data from 2000 to 2020, InVEST model was used to estimate both geographical and chronological trends in the HQ in the Tuha region, China. Spatial autocorrelation analysis methods were used to assess HQ and spatial aggregation of habitat degradation, and ecological zoning was delineated in conjunction with the Human Footprint Index (HFI). Based on the results of ecological zoning, the study predicted changes in habitat quality (HQ) in 2040 under three scenarios: natural development (ND), ecological preservation (EP), and urban development (UD) by applying the Patch-Generating Land Use Simulation (PLUS) model. The results demonstrated that (1) from 2000 to 2020, the habitat quality in the Tuha region exhibited a downward trend, with the proportion of low HQ increasing from 83.63% to 84.24%. Spatially, high habitat quality (HQ) is mainly concentrated in the Tianshan Mountains. From 2000 to 2020, the Moran index for habitat quality (HQ) decreased from 0.967 to 0.959, while the Moran index for habitat degradation declined from 0.805 to 0.780. The habitat quality (HQ) and degradation exhibit significant spatial aggregation, and the degree of degradation has increased incrementally. (2) From 2000 to 2020, human activities in the Tuha area increased continuously and were mainly concentrated in Tuha district and counties. The proportion of high Human Footprint Index (HFI) increased from 0.66% to 1.32%, while the proportion of medium HFI increased from 3.13% to 7.46%. (3) The expansion of urbanized land has exacerbated habitat degradation. The proportion of high HQ in the EP scenario is higher than that in ND and UD scenario. The results show that the ecological protection scenario is more conducive to the sustainable development of habitat quality in the Tuha region. The results can provide a scientific basis for ecological management and protection in the Tuha area.

Human activities exert a profound influence on land use and land cover, and these changes directly influence habitat quality and ecosystem functioning. In the Gansu–Qinghai contiguous region of the upper Yellow River, habitat quality has undergone substantial transformations in recent years due to the synergistic impacts of natural processes and human intervention. Therefore, evaluating the effects of land use changes on habitat quality is crucial for advancing regional sustainable development and improving the worth of ecosystem services. In response to these challenges, we devised a two-pronged approach: a land use simulation (FLUS) model and an integrated valuation of ecosystem services and trade-offs (InVEST) model, leveraging remote sensing data. This integrated methodology establishes a research framework for the evaluation and simulation of spatial and temporal variations in habitat quality. The results of the study show that, firstly, from 1980 to 2020, the habitat quality index in the Gansu–Qinghai contiguous region of the upper Yellow River decreased from 0.8528 to 0.8434. Secondly, our predictions anticipate a decrease in habitat quality, although the decline is not pronounced across all scenarios. The highest habitat quality values were projected under the EP (Ecology Priority) scenario, followed by the CLP (Cultivated Land Priority) scenario, while the BAU (Business as Usual) scenario consistently yielded the lowest values in all three scenarios. Finally, the ecological land, including forest land and grassland, consistently occupied areas characterized by high habitat quality. In contrast, Construction land consistently appeared in regions associated with low habitat quality. The implementation of conservation measures emerges as a crucial strategy, effectively limiting the expansion of construction land and promoting the augmentation of forest land and grassland cover. This approach serves to enhance overall habitat quality. These outcomes furnish a scientific foundation for the judicious formulation of future land-use policies and ecological protection measures.

The change of land use type caused by human construction activities affects the quality of regional habitat. In this study, InVEST model was used to evaluate the habitat quality of Qianping Reservoir in Henan Province, and CA-Markov model was used to simulate and predict the habitat quality in 2025 and 2035. The results show that cultivated land, forest land and grassland are the main land types in the reservoir area, accounting for about 90%. From 2000 to 2020 the arable land has been shrunk and the water area is increased by 116.94% within 20 years. The average value of habitat quality in the study area is increased from 0.550 595 in 2000 to 0.557 727 in 2015, but decreased to 0.556 880 in 2020, indicating that the habitat quality of the reservoir is on the whole increasing before the construction of the reservoir, but is decreased after the construction. The evolution trend of land use and habitat quality in the study area from 2020 to 2035 is basically consistent with that from 2000 to 2020. The reduction rate of cultivated land is decreased, the expansion rate of construction land slows down significantly and the habitat quality is still in a slightly decreasing trend on the whole. [Objective] The aims of this study are to evaluate the quality and degradation of habitats in the land border zone of Guangxi, and explore their evolutionary characteristics and aggregation effects, so as to provide reference for the construction of regional ecological civilization, the protection of the ecological environment and biodiversity, and the realization of green development. [Methods] Based on the InVest model and Moran′s I index, the habitat quality and degree of habitat degradation in the border areas of Guangxi was explored, and their spatiotemporal evolution and aggregation degree were analyzed. [Results] (1) From 2000 to 2020, the areas with a low degree of habitat quality degradation in the border areas of Guangxi mainly distributed in areas with good natural environmental conditions such as forests and grasslands, while significant habitat degradation occurred in human activity areas such as cultivated land, construction land, and river water. (2) Overall, the habitat quality score in the border areas of Guangxi was relatively high, with average habitat quality values of 0.739 2, 0.739 5 and 0.734 2 in 2000, 2010 and 2020, respectively. There were some counties and cities that occupied farmland in urban construction, resulting in a decrease in habitat quality. (3) The habitat quality in the border areas of Guangxi had significant clustering in spatial distribution. Although the area of high-high type clustering areas was significantly larger than that of low-low type clustering areas, there were low-low type clustering areas that cut the high-high type clustering areas, resulting in a decrease in the degree of concentration and fragmentation of higher habitats. [Conclusion] Land use changes in the border areas of Guangxi have a profound impact on the quality of regional habitats. [Objective] The aims of this study are to explore the distribution characteristics and spatiotemporal evolution of habitat quality patterns under land use change, and to provide decision-making reference for promoting regional ecological security and sustainable use of land resources. [Methods] Based on the land use data in 2000, 2010, and 2020, the InVEST model, spatial autocorrelation and hotspot analysis methods were used to evaluate habitat quality in southeastern Fujian, and to analyze its spatial-temporal evolution characteristics. [Results] Southeastern Fujian had a high vegetation cover of no less than 67%, but the construction land had encroached heavily on the non-construction land, mainly arable land, forest land and grassland, with an increase of 112.74%, which had intensified the degree of regional landscape fragmentation and made the landscape spatial pattern tend to be complex. The extreme and average values of habitat degradation index in southeastern Fujian increased by 23.44% and 43.94%, respectively, the intensity of degradation continued to increase, the high value area of degradation spread from southeast coast to inland, and the degradation level showed the spatial pattern of circling evolution. The overall level of habitat quality was good, and the proportion of areas above medium grade was about 63%. However, the lower grade areas in the built-up areas of cities and the higher grade areas at the junctions of cities and towns were easy to shift to the lower grade and difficult to recover, the regional habitat quality decreased gradually, with an average decrease of 5.17%. The habitat quality distribution presented the obvious spatial aggregation characteristics. The cold spots of habitat quality, which concentrated in the southeast and centered on municipal districts, gradually spread to surrounding townships. The hot spots of habitat quality, which distributed in the northwest and depend on mountains and hills, slowly extended. Townships in the cold and hot spot areas of habitat quality increased by 11 and 6, respectively, so that the regional habitat quality differences between the east and west tended to expand. Changes in land use patterns, mainly manifested by explosive expansion of construction land, brought about by economic development, industrial restructuring and population growth, were the primary causes of habitat fragmentation, degradation and quality decline in southeastern Fujian. [Conclusion] In the past 20 years, the significant land use changes in Southeastern Fujian had a negative impact on the regional habitat quality. The region should focus on controlling the scale and speed of urban spatial expansion, and do a good job in ecological governance and restoration in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
