Improved energy utilisation, precision, and quality are critical in the current trend of low-carbon green manufacturing. In this study, three abrasive belts were prepared at various wear stages and characterised quantitatively. The effects of abrasive belt wear on the specific grinding energy partition were investigated by evaluating robotic belt grinding of titanium plates. A specific grinding energy model based on subdivided tangential forces of cutting and sliding was developed for investigating specific energy and energy utilisation coefficient EUC. The surface morphology and Abbott–Firestone curves of the belts were introduced to analyse the experimental findings from the perspective of the micro cutting behaviour. The specific grinding energy increased with abrasive belt wear, especially when the belt was near the end of its life. Moreover, the belt wear could lead to a predominance change of sliding and chip formation energy. The highest EUC was observed in the middle of the belt life because of its retained sharp cutting edge and uniform distribution of the grit protrusion height. Microtopography and topographic parameter maps created from aerial laser profiler (LP) survey data are increasingly being used for business purposes. Wavelet analysis maps, unlike slope gradation maps, can be used to extract topographic irregularities without being affected by slope inclinations. First, a simulated terrain was created by changing the slope and the size of steps, and the size of steps that can be represented by a wavelet analysis map and by a slope gradation map was examined. Next, we examined the size of steps that can be extracted from the wavelet analysis and the slope gradation map for a slope with an average value of approximately 40 degrees, including the source of falling rocks, by using the results of the field survey. The size of the steps that can be extracted from the wavelet analysis map is approximately 2 m, and with the slope gradation map, it is more than 4 m. Hence, the wavelet analysis map is more accurate than the slope gradation map. Therefore, the wavelet analysis map can be used to extract smaller steps than those obtained with the slope gradation map. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Habitat heterogeneity caused by topographic variations at the local scale is the environmental basis for the establishment and evolution of biodiversity and biomass patterns. The similarities and distinctions between the effects of microtopographic variables on living wood (LWD) and dead wood (CWD) remain unknown. In the present study, the response mechanisms of biomass and species diversity patterns of living wood (LWD) and coarse woody debris (CWD) to microtopographic parameters were quantified in a warm temperate secondary forest located in Dongling Mountain, China. This quantification was achieved using a generalized additive model on a completely mapped 20-hectare permanent plot. The evaluation of biomass and species diversity of woody plants was carried out by utilizing the total basal area of all individuals and the species richness within each 20 m × 20 m quadrat as a standard. The results indicate that there are notable disparities in the influence of microtopographic elements on the LWD and CWD. In the case of LWD, microtopography accounts for 22.90% of the variation in total basal area, with convexity making a greater relative contribution than elevation, slope, and aspect. Additionally, microtopography explains 46.20% of the variation in species richness, with aspect making a greater relative contribution than elevation, convexity, and slope. Nevertheless, the influence of microtopography on CWD may only account for a deviation of 10.20% in the total basal area and 4.95% in the species richness; aspect and slope have been identified as the primary drivers in this regard. The inclusion of microtopographic factors in the model resulted in a 23.10% increase in the explanatory deviations of LWD biomass and an 8.70% increase in the explanatory deviations of CWD biomass. The findings suggest that topographic considerations have a greater impact on the biomass distribution of LWD compared to that of CWD. Conversely, the biomass of CWD is more influenced by the species richness. The presence of microtopography plays a vital role in determining the spatial distribution of species and biomass at local scales, reflecting the multiple response mechanisms and growth strategies of vegetation in response to redistribution in water, soil, and light. Due to the expansion of the use of powder bed fusion metal additive technologies in the medical field, especially for the realization of dental prostheses, in this paper, the authors propose a comparative experimental study of the mechanical characteristics and the state of their microscale surfaces. The comparison was made from material considerations starting from two dental alloys commonly used to realize dental prostheses: Ni-Cr and Co-Cr, but also technologies for obtaining selective laser melting (SLM) and conventional casting. In addition, to compare the performances with the classical casting technology, for the dental prostheses obtained through SLM, the post-processing stage in which they are in a preliminary finishing and polished state was considered. Therefore, for the determination of important mechanical characteristics and the comparative study of dental prostheses, the indentation test was used, after which the hardness, penetration depths (maximum, permanent, and contact depth), contact stiffness, and contact surface were established, and for the determination of the microtopography of the surfaces, atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used, obtaining the local areal roughness parameters at the miniaturized scale—surface average roughness, root-mean-square roughness (RMS), and peak-to-peak values. Following the research carried out, several interesting conclusions were drawn, and the superiority of the SLM technology over the classic casting method for the production of dental prostheses in terms of some mechanical properties was highlighted. At the same time, the degree of finishing of dental prostheses made by SLM has a significant impact on the mechanical characteristics and especially the local roughness parameters on a miniaturized scale, and if we consider the same degree of finishing, no major differences are observed in the roughness parameters of the surfaces of the prostheses produced by different technologies. Primary succession and microtopography result in environmental changes and are important processes influencing the community assembly of soil fungi in the Arctic region. In glacier forefields that contain a series of moraine ridges, both processes contribute synchronously to fungal spatial diversity. To reveal the synergistic effects of succession and microtopography, we investigated the fungal community structure and environmental variables in the moraines of the Arklio Glacier, Ellesmere Island. The study sites were established at four locations from the top to the bottom of the ridge slope within each of the three moraine ridges of different post-glacial ages. The location-dependent community composition was equally diverse in both the initial and later stages of succession, suggesting that successional time could alter the effects of microtopography on the fungal community. Moreover, our results suggest that fungal communities at different locations follow different successional trajectories, even if they have passed through the same time lapse. Such a synergistic effect of succession and microtopography of moraines does not allow for parallel changes in fungal communities among moraines or among locations, suggesting that the moraine series contributes substantially to fungal spatial diversity in the glacier forefield. Solifluction is the displacement of mud crust on surface of fixed foundation that occurs in areas near glaciers and mountains, which is underestimated as a natural disturbance factor and its ecological role in maintaining biodiversity is ignored. This process affects the denudation of mountains less than fast processes (landslides) and geochemical transitions, but due to its extent, has a great impact on the evolution of mountain landscapes. In order to investigate the physical and chemical properties of different solifluction soils, 4 sites were selected in the Daronagar River basin, located in the north-east Iran, based on the lobe or terrace type. Then, sampling was done from different microtopography, including the riser, tread and ridge parts. Texture, organic carbon, available phosphorus and potassium, pH, electrical conductivity, equivalent calcium carbonate, saturated moisture, soil stability, and porosity were then measured. The results showed that the impact of investigated factors on soil porosity and available phosphorus was not significant. In other studied characteristics, only the simple effect of the type of the studied site was significant. The values of pH, electrical conductivity, saturated moisture, and available potassium in Sites 1 and 2 were lower compared to the other two sites and there was a significant difference. This trend was the opposite in terms of organic carbon, soil stability and equivalent calcium carbonate. The highest value of these parameters was observed in terracetype solifluctions. It seems that the impact of soil displacement in all types of solifluctions, as well as mutual relationship of some soil characteristics and their effect on each other caused the emergence of different characteristics in the investigated solifluctions. We investigated the behavior of macrophages in the defined microtopography of materials. Patterned cyclo-olefin polymer films were implanted into the femurs of seven-week-old rats. After 1 and 4 weeks, the rats were fixed with glutaraldehyde and OsO 4 , and their bones were observed with transmission electron microscopy (TEM). TEM and segmentation revealed an alternating structure in which multiple protrusions of adjacent macrophage-like cells overlapped. They were approximately 2 μm long and almost uniform in width, and were induced by the limited topography. New structures appeared between the macrophage-like cells as a result of microtopography. In the headwater catchments of the Rocky Mountains, plant productivity and its dynamics are largely dependent upon water availability, which is influenced by changing snowmelt dynamics associated with climate change. Understanding and quantifying the interactions between snow, plants and soil moisture is challenging, since these interactions are highly heterogeneous in mountainous terrain, particularly as they are influenced by microtopography within a hillslope. Recent advances in satellite remote sensing have created an opportunity for monitoring snow and plant dynamics at high spatiotemporal resolutions that can capture microtopographic effects. In this study, we investigate the relationships among topography, snowmelt, soil moisture and plant dynamics in the East River watershed, Crested Butte, Colorado, based on a time series of 3-meter resolution PlanetScope normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) images. To make use of a large volume of high-resolution time-lapse images (17 images total), we use unsupervised machine learning methods to reduce the dimensionality of the time lapse images by identifying spatial zones that have characteristic NDVI time series. We hypothesize that each zone represents a set of similar snowmelt and plant dynamics that differ from other identified zones and that these zones are associated with key topographic features, plant species and soil moisture. We compare different distance measures (Ward and complete linkage) to understand the effects of their influence on the zonation map. Results show that the identified zones are associated with particular microtopographic features; highly productive zones are associated with low slopes and high topographic wetness index, in contrast with zones of low productivity, which are associated with high slopes and low topographic wetness index. The zones also correspond to particular plant species distributions; higher forb coverage is associated with zones characterized by higher peak productivity combined with rapid senescence in low moisture conditions, while higher sagebrush coverage is associated with low productivity and similar senescence patterns between high and low moisture conditions. In addition, soil moisture probe and sensor data confirm that each zone has a unique soil moisture distribution. This cluster-based analysis can tractably analyze high-resolution time-lapse images to examine plant-soil-snow interactions, guide sampling and sensor placements and identify areas likely vulnerable to ecological change in the future.

Coastal peatlands have been frequently blocked from the sea and artificially drained for agriculture. With an increasing awareness of ecosystem functions, several of these coastal peatlands have been rewetted through dike removal, allowing seawater flooding. In this study, we investigated a recently rewetted peatland on the Baltic Sea coast with the aim to characterize the prevailing soils/sediments with respect to organic matter accumulation and the potential release of nutrients upon seawater flooding. Eighty disturbed soil samples were collected from two depths at different elevations (–0.90 to 0.97 m compared to sea level) and analyzed for soil organic matter (SOM) content and carbon:nitrogen (C:N) ratio. Additionally, nine undisturbed soil cores were collected from three distinct elevation groups and used in leaching experiments with alternating freshwater and Baltic Sea water. The results demonstrated a moderate to strong spatial dependence of surface elevation, SOM content, and C:N ratio. SOM content and C:N ratio were strongly negatively correlated with elevation, indicating that organic matter mineralization was restricted in low-lying areas. The results also showed that the soils at low elevations release more dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and ammonium (NH4+) than soils at high elevations. For soils at low elevations, higher DOC concentrations were observed when flushing with freshwater, whereas higher NH4+ concentrations were found when flushing with brackish water. Recorded NH4+ concentrations in organic-rich peat reached 14.82 ± 9.25 mg L–1, exceeding Baltic seawater (e.g., 0.03 mg L–1) by two orders of magnitude. A potential sea level rise may increase the export of NH4+ from low-lying and rewetted peat soils to the sea, impacting adjacent marine ecosystems. Overall, in coastal peatlands, geochemical processes (e.g., C and N cycling and release) are closely linked to microtopography and related patterns of organic matter content of the soil and sediments.

As a major invasive species in coastal China, Spartina alterniflora (S. alterniflora) has seriously threatened the ecological functions of coastal wetlands. Based on multisource high-precision geospatial data obtained by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), the shape and distribution of S. alterniflora patches were extracted and analysed by using object-oriented classification and the landscape pattern index in this study. Considering microtopographic variations, the trend-surface subregions were delimited. In this way, we examined the relationship between S. alterniflora distribution and expansion and the variation in microtopography and tidal hydrology in the early invasion stage. The results showed that the microtopography silted up acceleration from land to sea, and the inundation time was reduced significantly in the study area for 2020–2022. In 2020, the average area of S. alterniflora patches showed a decreasing trend from land to sea. The distribution of patches on both sides of the sea and land was relatively concentrated and dispersed in the middle. By 2022, S. alterniflora presented a rapid expansion, with the total area expanding from 8488.57 m2 to 18470.72 m2. With the variation in microtopography, the characteristics of S. alterniflora patch expansion presented regional differences: Due to the small microtopographic and tidal hydrological variations, the patches fluctuated outwards slightly (average variation distance was 0.93 m) near the dike. The patches in the seaside front area had an annular expansion, and the expansion speed positively correlated with the area of the original patch. In the central region, the small patches merged and filled to form an S. alterniflora belt, while a large number of new small patches appeared. In general, the heterogeneous environment formed by microtopographic variations was conducive to the colonization and growth of S. alterniflora, but the excessive slope could inhibit expansion. This study will provide a theoretical basis for coastal ecological management and rapid control of S. alterniflora expansion.

Polyphosphoric acid (PPA) and styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) were adopted to produce PPA-SBS-modified bio-blend bitumen, which achieved excellent mechanical performance. However, its long-range performance, such as the fatigue and thermal cracking behavior under long-term thermal oxidation, is not well understood. Therefore, a pressure aging vessel (PAV) system was applied to simulate the aging behavior of the bitumen under the action of thermal oxidation. Then, a linear amplitude sweep (LAS) test combined with a viscoelastic continuum damage (VECD) model was applied to investigate the fatigue properties of the bitumen. Moreover, a bending beam rheometer (BBR) test was conducted to evaluate the thermal cracking resistance of the bitumen before and after PAV aging. Meanwhile, an atomic force microscope (AFM) was applied to observe the microscopic topography. The results show that the original compound-modified bitumen can bear more fatigue damage than that of the control bitumen at the failure point, and it also has excellent fatigue resistance at 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10% applied strain. Moreover, the VECD model can accurately predict the fatigue life of the bitumen under different applied strains. The variation ratio of stiffness modulus for the compound-modified bitumen is below that of the control bitumen after PAV aging, so it shows a better anti-aging performance. Finally, the AFM test shows that PPA and bio-bitumen decrease the heterogeneity of the bitumen, reducing the difference between phases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

[Objective] Studying the relationship between micro-topography and erosion under vegetation pattern can provide theoretical reference for the study of slope erosion law and soil and water loss control in feldspathic sandstone area. Methods] Slopes with three planting patterns (uniform distribution, aggregation distribution, random distribution) in BaoJia watershed in feldspathic sandstone areas were selected as the research sites. Field measurements in runoff plots under the condition of natural rainfall and 3T) laser scanning technology were jointly used, to analyze the influence of the vegetation pattern of microtopography and erosion. ResultsJ After rainfall, the order of discharge and sediment yield on different vegetation patterns was bare slope>aggregate sloped random slope>uniform slope. Compared with bare slope, discharge and sediment yield on uniform slope decreased by 64% and 75%, respectively. The fitting function of runoff and sediment is 丫 = ().361 9无, R'=().9866. There were some differences in the spatial distribution of erosiondeposition on slopes with different vegetation patterns. Compared with other slopes, the soil erosion intensity of homogeneous slope was the weakest, the erosion area was the smallest (1 2.38 m2), and the sediment area was the largest (3.44 ni'). The slope topographic factors of different vegetation patterns showed the increasing trend with rainfall, and compared with bare slope, increments of the surface roughness, surface undulation, surface cleanness and micro-slope were the least, which were 5 %, 2 %, ().5% and 9 %, respectively. The correlations between surface roughness and runoff and sediment yield were ().632 and ().619, respectively. Compared with other slopes, the fitting effect of topographic factors on bare slope and sediment yield was the best. The fitting functions of runoff and sediment were expressed as X = 0. 993R A 一1. [Conclusion] The uniform distribution pattern has the best inhibition effect on soil erosion on feldspathic sandstone slope under hydraulic erosion condition, but the fitting effect is the worst. The occurrence and development of rill erosion depends on the hydraulic characteristics of water flow and underlying soil surface features. Our experiments include one-rainfall-intensity treatments (2.0 mm min−1) and various microtopographic levels based on different tillage practices with smooth slope (CK), artificial digging (AD), and ridge tillage (RT) on a 15° slope. The results indicate the following: (1) The soil roughness index values were in the order of CK < AD < RT, and the spatial variability of different tillage practices had strong autocorrelations during different rill erosive stages. The codomain values decreased with the increase in microtopography. (2) The multifractal dimension values of tillage practices in various erosive stages were in the order of RT > AD > CT. The microtopography of different tilled slopes showed strong multifractal characteristics, and the multifractal characteristics were stronger as the microrelief heterogeneity increased. For the CK slope, the generalized fractal dimension span (ΔD) ranged between 0.0019 and 0.0058. For the AD slope, ΔD was between 0.2901 and 0.5112. And, for the RT slope, ΔD was between 0.4235 and 0.7626. (3) With the evolution of rill erosion, the flow pattern on different tilled slopes changed from subcritical transition flow to supercritical transition flow. (4) Soil roughness index and ΔD had good correlations with hydrodynamic parameters. The stronger the erosive energy of runoff was, the higher the spatial heterogeneity of microtopography was. This study is expected to provide a theoretical basis for revealing the hydrodynamic mechanism of rill erosion in slope farmland.

Soil microorganisms play crucial roles in the stability of the global carbon pool, particularly in permafrost peatlands that are highly sensitive to climate change. Microtopography is a unique characteristic of peatland ecosystems, but how microtopography affects the microbial community structures and their functions in the soil is only partially known. We characterized the bacterial and fungal community compositions by amplicon sequencing and their abundances via quantitative PCR at different soil depths in three microtopographical positions (hummocks, flats, and hollows) in permafrost peatland of the Greater Xing’an Mountains in China. The results showed that the soil of hummocks displayed a higher microbial diversity compared to hollows. Microtopography exerted a strong influence on bacterial community structure, while both microtopography and soil depth greatly impacted the fungal community structure with variable effects on fungal functional guilds. Soil water content, dissolved organic carbon, total phosphorus, and total nitrogen levels of the soil mostly affected the bacterial and fungal communities. Microtopography generated variations in the soil water content, which was the main driver of the spatial distribution of microbial abundances. This information stressed that the hummock–flat–hollow microtopography of permafrost peatlands creates heterogeneity in soil physicochemical properties and hydrological conditions, thereby influencing soil microbial communities at a microhabitat scale. Our results imply that changes to the water table induced by climate warming inducing permafrost degradation will impact the composition of soil microbes in peatlands and their related biogeochemical functions, eventually providing feedback loops into the global climate system.

Chasing is one of the main decorative techniques found in metal work. The imprints left by different chasing tools are unique not only to the tool, but also to the chaser. The analysis and characterisation of toolmarks provide vast information that is valuable for the understanding of an object. Microtopography is a non-contact imaging technique that allows a metrical analysis of a surface on a microscopic scale. In this paper, metal mock-ups made using different chasing tools were scanned using microtopography, and their morphological features were used to classify the tools used for their fabrication. The mock-ups were artificially aged to replicate conditions of real archaeological metal objects. The overall classification accuracy obtained for the non-aged mock-ups was 91% for brass and 84% for copper mock-ups. After ageing, the classification accuracy was 65% for brass and 68% for copper. The change in classification accuracy before and after ageing was caused by the corrosion on the aged mock-ups. These results show that this is a promising methodology that could be applied on real chased metal objects.

The dataset presented contains microtopographies of various materials and processing methods. These microtopographies were measured using a Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope, which provides RGB-D data. This means the dataset comprises accurate height maps for each measurement and microscopic RGB images. The height maps can be used to quantify and characterize small-scale surface features such as pits and grooves, surface roughness, texture direction, and surface anisotropy. These features can significantly impact a material's properties and behavior, making them essential in many fields, such as biomaterials and tribology. Additionally, the dataset contains metadata about the specimens and the measurement conditions, such as material, surface processing method, roughness, and optical magnification. Therefore, this dataset provides an opportunity to develop and test surface classification and characterization algorithms.

Microtopography plays an important role in various ecological, hydrologic, and biogeochemical processes. However, quantifying the characteristics of microtopography represents a data-intensive challenge. Over the last decade, high-resolution or close-range remote sensing data and techniques have emerged as powerful tools to quantify microtopography. Traditional field surveys were mostly limited to transects or small plots, using limited sets of observations but with the decrease in the cost of close-range remote sensing technologies and the increase in computing performance, the microtopography even in forested environments can be assessed. The main objective of this article is to provide a systematic framework for microtopographic studies using close-range remote sensing technologies. This is achieved by reviewing the application of close-range remote sensing to capture microtopography and develop microtopographic models in natural ecosystems. Specifically, to achieve the main objectives, we focus on addressing the following questions: (1) What terrain attributes represent microtopography in natural ecosystems? (2) What spatial resolution of terrain attributes is needed to represent the microtopography? (3) What methodologies have been adopted to collect data at selected resolutions? (4) How to assess microtopography? Current research, challenges, and applicability of close-range remote sensing techniques in different terrains are analyzed with an eye to enhancing the use of these new technologies. We highlight the importance of using a high-resolution DEM (less than 1 m2 spatial resolution) to delineate microtopography. Such a high-resolution DEM can be generated using close-range remote sensing techniques. We also illustrate the need to move beyond elevation and include terrain attributes, such as slope, aspect, terrain wetness index, ruggedness, flow accumulation, and flow path, and assess their role in influencing biogeochemical processes such as greenhouse gas emissions, species distribution, and biodiversity. To assess microtopography in terms of physical characteristics, several methods can be adopted, such as threshold-based classification, mechanistically-based delineation, and machine learning-based delineation of microtopography. The microtopographic features can be analyzed based on physical characteristics such as area, volume, depth, and perimeter, or by using landscape metrics to compare the classified microtopographic features. Remote sensing techniques, when used in conjunction with field experiments/data, provide new avenues for researchers in understanding ecological functions such as biodiversity and species distribution, hydrological processes, greenhouse gas emissions, and the environmental factors that influence those parameters. This article demonstrates the application of the methods unravelling microtopographic features, specifically, sunken linear landforms indicating remains of historical trackways in forests. These are related to the 'Magna Via' route in the vicinity of the Deserted Castle and the Peťuša Castle in Central Slovakia. The microtopography validation dataset indicating sunken linear landforms was used to evaluate the data overlap of tracks identified by the global positioning and navigation system (GNSS) and a model of tracks created with the least cost path (LCP) algorithm. Microtopographic features derived from a digital relief model generated by high‐resolution Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) scans (density of 5 points/pixel) allowed us to determine the exact position (submeter total vertical and horizontal accuracy) of certain segments of the GNSS tracks and LCP overlapping the sunken linear landforms. Two conspicuous wet shifts in the peat stratigraphy of Store Mosse in southern Sweden, associated with bog‐wide changes in vegetation and degree of peat decomposition, were analysed at high resolution. The bog‐surface wetness (BSW) proxy data (organic matter bulk density, C/N ratio, plant macrofossils and testate amoebae) highlight the importance of interactions between vegetation composition, microtopography and degree of peat decomposition, and show that the bog system operated consistently during the two wet shifts (dated to c. 2700 and 1000 cal a bp) despite different internal and external conditions. A sensitive bog‐system state, associated with a degraded microtopography and well‐decomposed surface peat with low hydrological conductivity developed during sustained dry conditions, probably contributed to the large BSW amplitudes registered. Comparable bog systems are expected to operate in the same way, and regionally high sensitivity that developed in response to atmospheric circulation changes may partly explain synchronous registration of wet shifts. The wet shifts in Store Mosse were attributed to solar and volcanic forcing, respectively, and wet shifts of similar magnitude registered in other NW European bogs are likely to also have been externally forced. Northwestern Canada's discontinuous permafrost landscape is transitioning rapidly due to permafrost thaw, with the conversion of elevated, forested peat plateaus to low‐lying, treeless wetlands. Increasing hydrological connectivity leads to partial drainage of previously isolated wetlands, which subsequently develop hummock–hollow microtopography. Ultimately, the ecohydrological feedbacks associated with climate‐driven permafrost thaw have led to the expansion of treed wetlands in plateau–wetland complexes. Field research and aerial imagery analyses were conducted at the Scotty Creek Research Station, Northwest Territories, to examine the development of hummock terrain over time and the resultant impacts on the hydrological response of wetlands connected to the basin drainage network. The area of peat plateaus underlain by permafrost declined between 2010 and 2018. The total area of hummock terrain increased in the basin in the same time period, with an overall decrease in the hummock perimeter‐to‐area ratio as small individual hummocks increased in size and aggregated into larger hummock complexes occupied by re‐establishing trees. With the development and expansion of hummock terrain, the tortuosity of flowpaths draining wetlands increased. The average wetland water level recession constants following precipitation events became shorter over the 15 year period of record (2003–2017). The average time of water level rise in response to precipitation events decreased over time, as precipitation was directed quickly to runoff. As permafrost thaw reduces the cover of peat plateaus in exchange for increased wetland area, the presence of treed wetlands appears to be transitioning plateau–wetland complexes into permafrost‐free forest, facilitated by the growth of hummock terrain. Introduction: To clarify the effects of microtopography on plant growth and soil water, salt and nutrient characteristics of saline soils in mudflats within muddy coastal zones and explore suitable microtopographic modifications. Methods: Six microtopographic modification patterns, namely, S-shaped, stripe-shaped, pin-shaped, stepshaped, dense stripe-shaped and crescent-shaped patterns, were established in the coastal mudflats of the Yellow River Delta. The soil water, salt, ion, total carbon, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus contents and their ecological stoichiometric characteristics were measured and analyzed after theimplementation of different microtopographic modification patterns, with bare mudflats as the control. Results: The results showed that microtopographic modification significantly changed the soil water and salt contents and the soil total carbon, total nitrogen and total phosphorus contents. Compared with the bare ground, microtopographic transformation significantly promoted the growth of the pioneer plant Suaeda salsa, significantly increased the soil water and nutrient contents, and significantly decreased the soil salinity. The soil salinity was mainly reduced by Na+ and Cl- ions. The soil salinity and nutrient contents gradually decreased with increasing soil depth, indicating the occurrence of surface aggregation. Compared to that of the bare ground, the soil C/N was significantly lower and the N/P was significantly higher in the microtopographic treatments, and the overall performance suggested soil N limitation. The ions contained in the saline soil were dominated by Na+ and Cl-, followed by Mg2+ and SO42-, with lower contents of K+, Ca2+ and HCO3-. Among the six microtopography modification patterns, the crescent-shaped pattern best promoted vegetation restoration. This pattern was the most effective in reducing soil salinity, with a 98.53% reduction in soil salinity compared with that of bare ground, followed by the pin-shaped pattern. Compared with that in the bare ground samples, the nutrient content in the samples from the step-shaped modification increased by 23.27%; finally, the S-shaped, step-shaped and dense stripe-shaped patterns performed poorly in terms of plant restoration and soil improvement. Discussion: It is suggested that a crescent-shaped pattern should be considered first when carrying out microtopographic transformation on the beaches of the Yellow River Delta, followed by stripe-shaped and pin-shaped patterns. Western juniper (Juniperus occidentalis Hook.) woodlands have persisted for millennia in semiarid parts of the northern Great Basin, USA, providing critical habitat for plant and animal species. Historical records suggest that the establishment of western juniper is strongly associated with regional climatic variability. For example, the abundance of western juniper pollen and macrofossils measured in lake sediment cores increased rapidly in the mid-1500s, concurrent with a regional increase in winter precipitation. However, little is known about how climatic factors interact with landscape structure to control the spatial distribution of western juniper at fine scales and at lower treelines. We used tree rings to reconstruct a spatially distributed history of establishment for 421 western juniper trees across 130 ha on Horse Ridge in central Oregon. Establishment occurred between 845 and 1961 CE, but most trees established after the mid-1550s. The pronounced sixteenth century pulse of establishment represents a transition from more open wooded shrublands to persistent woodlands and coincides with an increase in cool-season moisture and generally cool summer temperatures. Ancient trees that established before this were limited to certain microsites, suggesting that local topoedaphic conditions influenced juniper woodland demography and distributions, although we could not identify consistent environmental drivers. In the future, warmer and drier growing season conditions and a potential increase in wildfire activity may broadly limit western juniper recruitment and its distribution across the region, but at finer scales landscape features that buffer climate change impacts or provide fire safe niches may serve as refugia. Treed peatlands are dominated by bryophytes, particularly Sphagnum spp., which create the characteristic hummock‐hollow microtopography. This, in turn, shapes the distribution of bryophyte communities. Disturbances can lead to a loss of this microtopographic variation, impacting the bryophyte community. Seismic lines are deforested linear disturbances (approximately 3–8 m wide) created during oil and gas exploration and very extensive in Alberta, Canada. Loss of microtopographic variation leads to slow tree recovery on seismic lines in treed peatlands. To facilitate tree establishment, mounding is being applied to restore the microtopography on seismic lines. We compared bryophyte communities on unmounded and mounded seismic lines (18 years after seismic line creation, 3 years after mounding), and in adjacent treed fens as the reference, to evaluate how recovery varies with microtopographic position (i.e., top of hummock, slope or side of the hummock, and level ground). We found that recovery on the unmounded seismic lines was underway 18 years after seismic lines were created, while mounding redisturbed the sites and thus set back recovery, at least in the short term (3 years post‐mounding). In unmounded seismic lines, Sphagnum cover was similar to that of reference treatments at all microtopographic positions. In contrast, mounded seismic lines had lower Sphagnum cover and higher cover of true mosses (sans feather mosses) than reference and unmounded treatments. Overall, these results show mounding sets back the recovery of bryophyte communities—the very organisms responsible for the microtopographic variation we are trying to establish. The effects of microtopography on erosion remain uncertain, and contradictory findings have been reported in past decades, hindering full understanding and accurate prediction of the quantity and quality of soil erosion caused by rainfall‐runoff. In this study, we applied a dynamic wave and Hairsine‐Rose model simulator on hillslopes composed of various sizes of mounds and puddles. For the tested soil particles whose settling velocity is 0.0035−300mm/s $0.0035-300\,\mathrm{m}\mathrm{m}/\mathrm{s}$ and rainfall intensity of 100mm/hr $100\,\mathrm{m}\mathrm{m}/\mathrm{h}\mathrm{r}$, we found that soil erosion quantity is significantly affected by microtopographic roughness, even under the same rainfall‐runoff conditions. In addition, we found that soil particle size can potentially determine whether there is a direct or inverse proportionality relationship between microtopographic roughness and soil erosion rate on hillslopes. That is, when the land surface layer is composed of relatively small soil particles, rough microtopographies accelerate soil erosion rates compared to smooth microtopographies. In contrast, when it is composed of large soil particles, soil erosion increases more on smooth microtopographies than on rough microtopographies, at least under the tested conditions. Finally, it was revealed that the progress of the microtopographic scale armoring process is closely related to the microtopographic roughness as well as the grain size. Thus, to appropriately consider the role of microtopography in soil erosion problems, the processes of pickup, advection, and deposition related to armoring must be physically considered. Without sufficient information on these features, low prediction accuracy is expected, not only of the quantity but also in the quality of soil erosion. In the dynamic monitoring fixed sample plot of 25 ha of coniferous broad-leaved mixed forest in the temperate zone of Northeast China, we used the data from two surveys (2013 and 2018) and microtopography data of the sample plot, and the mycorrhizal type data of tree species to explore whether the different microtopography types and single terrain factors will affect the radial growth of tree species with different mycorrhizal types on a regional scale. We studied the adaptability of tree species with different mycorrhizal types in the north end of Changbai Mountain and the south slope of Laoyeling mountain, and which provided basis for further revealing the response mechanism of tree species with different mycorrhizal types to the microtopography in this area. We found that: the tree species with different mycorrhizal types have higher radial growth rates on gentle slopes than on steep slopes. Tree species on sunny slopes have higher growth rates and survival rates than tree species of the same mycorrhizal type on shady slopes. The quantity and radial growth of AM (Arbuscular mycorrhiza) type, EcM (Ectomycorrhiza) type, and ErM (Ericoid mycorrhiza) type tree species were significantly positively correlated with different microtopography types. The quantity and radial growth of AM type tree species and EcM type tree species were significantly positively correlated with slope. The quantity of AM type tree species, EcM type tree species and the radial growth of EcM type tree species were significantly negatively correlated with slope aspect. The quantity and radial growth of ErM type tree species and radial growth of EcM type tree species the were significantly positively correlated with slope position. • The effect of stress history in gravel-bed on the temporal and spatial variations of critical shear stress is quantified. • Relations among critical shear stress, microtopography, and statistical parameters of bed topography at the different scales are explored. • An optimized critical shear stress evaluation method for bedload transport rate in gravel-bed rivers is proposed. Critical shear stress is a pivotal parameter that describes the bedload transport and riverbed stability. Recent studies indicate that different interevent periods in gravel-bed streams can lead to a realignment of riverbed structures, thereby disrupting the bedload transport. In this research, a series of flume experiments were conducted to study the effect of stress history on the critical shear stress of bedload transport in a gravel-bed channel. The results reveal the temporal-spatial variation patterns of critical shear stress. The critical shear stress has an increased trend after interevent with low flow and long duration. Conversely, a decreasing trend in critical shear stress observed after low flow and short duration conditions. After interevent durations with medium to high flow condition, no matter the duration, critical shear stress shows a decreasing trend. A significant positive correlation between the flow magnitude of the interevent period and the critical shear stress of the subsequent flood period is shown. Besides, critical shear stress has a significant spatial variation pattern on the gravel bed due to the presence of microtopography as revealed by the correlation analysis results among the spatial density of microtopography with different protrusion heights, riverbed statistical parameters, and critical shear stress. Moreover, the stress history, by adjusting the position of fine particles on the riverbed surface through different magnitudes and durations of the interevent period, affects the spatial density of the microtopography, thereby influencing the critical shear stress. The conventional bedload transport equations are deficit by only considering the riverbed slope or standard deviation of bed surface elevation. An optimization of the critical shear stress calculation method, based on parameter correlation analysis, is proposed, potentially enhancing the calculation accuracy of bedload transport in mountainous rivers. Understanding the interaction between the Antarctic biogeochemical cycle and global environmental change requires a comprehensive investigation of the ice sheet and underlying bedrock. An effective approach to investigating subglacial characteristics is through bedrock drilling, making the identification of a suitable drilling site a crucial prerequisite. In this study, data from airborne ice-penetrating radar and an Uncrewed Aerial Vehicle (UAV) remote sensing were used in combination to obtain real-time and high-resolution information about the surface, ice thickness, and subglacial conditions in a local area near Zhongshan Station, and further to identify a drilling site that is both safe and optimal for the successful acquisition of bedrock samples beneath the East Antarctic Ice Sheet. By analyzing the airborne ice-penetrating radar data from the 35th Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition (CHINARE) (2018–2019), a potential drilling site was selected based on ice thickness (≤200 m) and a dry basal condition with no channels or basal crevasses, to avoid drilling fluid leakage. UAV data confirmed stable surface topography, ice flow, and the absence of surface crevasses. The optimal site was identified as located close to the western flank of the upstream part of the Dålk Glacier. In 2019, CHINARE successfully retrieved a valuable bedrock core sample from the borehole at this location. (1) Background: Skin barrier function resides mostly in the stratum corneum, which consists of a protein component, the corneocyte (bricks), which provides a scaffold for the second component, the extracellular matrix, consisting of multilayers of lipids (mortar). These two components closely interact and this could be the basis for the differences in the biophysical properties of the skin between anatomical regions. So, the aim of this study was to compare skin microstructural properties between body sites. (2) Methods: A comparative study was conducted that included healthy individuals without previous skin diseases. Skin barrier function parameters and microtopography parameters (smoothness, roughness, desquamation, wrinkles, surface, volume, contrast, variance, homogeneity, anisotropy, total cell count, flaking index, skin surface hardness, brightness, deformability and friction) were measured on the forearm, cheek and palm. (3) Results: 44 participants were included in this study, with a mean age of 38.8 ± 15.0 years. Significant differences were found between body sites for 14 of the 15 parameters evaluated. Smoothness was higher on the forearm than on the cheek and palm (240.02 Sems vs. 348.16 vs. 408.19 Sems, p < 0.05). Hardness was higher on the palm than on the forearm and cheek (13.22 AU vs. 9.44 AU vs. 7.94 AU, p < 0.05). Moreover, we observed that sociodemographic characteristics such as age, sex, tobacco and/or alcohol use, influenced the parameters evaluated. (4) Conclusions: The differences in skin barrier function and microtopography between anatomical regions reflects the different structure of skin in each body part and could help to understand the influence of the sociodemographic characteristics on theses parameters. This information could be useful for comparison with pathological skin characteristics and for targeting new treatments.

Of particular interest in the north of Western Siberia are frozen flat-mound bogs. Being formed in a transitional climatic zone, on the southern front of the permafrost zone, these frozen peatlands may turn out to be highly reactive upon thawing and deliver high amounts of solutes to the hydrological network. A detailed study of a flat-mound bog was carried out in a key area of about 3 hectares (Purovsky district, Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug). The soil-ecological conditions of the site are described, as well as the effect of spatial heterogeneity on the composition and properties of soils. Using topographic mapping and photogrammetry, it was identified that the bog surface is characterized by distinct microtopography (mounds-hollows-thermokarst subsidence with a percentage areas ratio of 49:30:21, respectively). Small-scale variations in ecohydrological settings, microtopography, and vegetation affect the distribution of nutrients, organic carbon in soils, and DOC (dissolved organic carbon) in bog waters. The main soil types are Dystric Hemic Cryic Histosols and Dystric Hemic Histosols (Gelic) found on mounds and in subsidence, respectively. If the peat thickness decreases to 40– 60 cm, then Spodic Histic Turbic Cryosols (Albic, Arenic) and Histic Turbic Cryosols (Albic, Arenic) form. In hollows and fens, Dystric Epifibric Histosols, Spodic Histic Turbic Cryosols (Arenic), and Gleyic Histic Entic Podzols (Turbic) are the most common. The proportion of soils with frozen peat is no more than 20% of the area of the key site and permafrost lies deeper, in the underlying rocks. It was found that carbon stocks within the key area vary from 31.1 to 91.3 kg/m2. The maximum values are observed in transit subsidences/hollows between mounds, where water is discharged. Concentrations of macro-microelements in bog waters vary depending on microform types. For some elements (e.g., DOC, Fe, Al, B, Si, Ti, V, Rb, Sb, Cs, REEs (rare earth elements), Pb, Th, U), they are approximately equal or 1.5–2 higher on the mounds. The export of DOC and other elements in permafrost areas is primarily controlled by the residence time of water and movement ways along the profile. In addition to this, the physicochemical properties of peat and biomass, which are also higher on mounds, influence the distribution and accumulation of nutrients.

Warming is expected to increase the net release of carbon from peatland soils, contributing to future warming. This positive feedback may be moderated by the response of peatland vegetation to rising atmospheric [CO2] or to increased soil nutrient availability. We asked whether a gradient of whole-ecosystem warming (from + 0 °C to + 9 °C) would increase plant-available nitrogen and phosphorus in an ombrotrophic bog in northern Minnesota, USA, and whether elevated [CO2] would modify the nutrient response. We tracked changes in plant-available nutrients across space and through time and in comparison with other nutrient pools, and assessed whether nutrient warming responses were captured by a point version of the land-surface model, ELM-SPRUCE. We found that warming exponentially increased plant-available ammonium and phosphate, but that nutrient dynamics were unaffected by elevated [CO2]. The warming response increased by an order of magnitude between the first and fourth year of the experimental manipulation, perhaps because of dramatic mortality of Sphagnum mosses in the surface peat of the warmest treatments. However, neither the magnitude nor the temporal dynamics of the responses were captured by ELM-SPRUCE. Relative increases in plant-available ammonium and phosphate with warming were similar, but the response varied across raised hummocks and depressed hollows and with peat depth. Plant-available nutrient dynamics were only loosely correlated with inorganic and organic porewater nutrients, likely representing different processes. Future predictions of peatland nutrient availability under climate change scenarios must account for dynamic changes in nutrient acquisition by plants and microbes, as well as microtopography and peat depth. Periodontitis is a common inflammatory disease that in some cases can cause tooth loss. Cementum is a mineralized tissue that forms part of the insertion periodontium and serves to fix the teeth to the alveolar bone. In addition, it acts as a reservoir of different growth and differentiation factors, which regulate the biology of the teeth. Cementogenesis is a complex process that is still under investigation and involves different factors, including dentin sialophosphoprotein (DSPP). In this work we studied the role of surface microtopography in the differentiation of human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) into cementoid-like secreting cells. We cultured hDPSCs on decellularized dental scaffolds on either dentin or cementum surfaces. Cell morphology was evaluated by light and electron microscopy. We also evaluated the DSPP expression by immunohistochemistry. The hDPSCs that was cultured on surfaces with accessible dentinal tubules acquired an odontoblastic phenotype and emitted characteristic processes within the dentinal tubules. These cells synthesized the matrix components of a characteristic reticular connective tissue, with fine collagen fibers and DSPP deposits. The hDPSCs that was cultured on cementum surfaces generated a well-organized tissue consisting of layers of secretory cells and dense fibrous connective tissue with thick bundles of collagen fibers perpendicular to the scaffold surface. Intra- and intercellular deposits of DSPP were also observed. The results presented here reinforce the potential for hDPSCs to differentiate in vitro into cells that secrete a cementoid-like matrix in response to the physical stimuli related to the microtopography of contact surfaces. With the advantages of high accuracy, low cost, and flexibility, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) images are now widely used in the fields of land survey, crop monitoring, and soil property prediction. Since the distribution of soil and landscape are closely related, this study makes use of the advantages of UAV images to classify the landscape to build a landscape classification system for soil investigation. Firstly, land use, object, and topographic factor were selected as landscape factors based on soil-forming factors. Then, based on multispectral images and Digital Elevation Models (DEM) acquired by UAV, object-oriented classification of different landscape factors was carried out. Additionally, we selected 432 sample data and validation data from the field survey. Finally, the landscape factor classification results were superimposed to obtain the landscape unit applicable to the system classification. The landscape classification system oriented to the soil survey was constructed by clustering 11,897 landscape units through the rough K-mean clustering algorithm. Compared to K-mean clustering, the rough K-mean clustering was better, with a Silhouette Coefficient of 0.26247 significantly higher than that of K-mean clustering. From the classification results, it can be found that the overall classification results are somewhat fragmented, but the landscape boundaries at the small area scale are consistent with the actual situation and the fragmented small spots are less. Comparing the small number of landscape boundaries obtained from the actual survey, we can find that the landscape boundaries in the landscape classification map are generally consistent with the actual landscape boundaries. In addition, through the analysis of two soil profile data within a landscape category, we found that the identified soil type of soil formation conditions and the landscape factor type of the landscape category is approximately the same. Therefore, this landscape classification system can be effectively used for soil surveys, and this landscape classification system is important for soil surveys to carry out the selection of survey routes, the setting of profile points, and the determination of soil boundaries. Deltaic channels are significant landforms at the interface of sediment transfer from land to oceanic realms. Understanding the dynamics of these channels is urgent because delta processes are sensitive to climate change and adjustments in human activity. To obtain a better understanding of the morphological processes of large deltaic channels, this study assessed the evolution and response mechanism of the South Channel and South Passage (SCSP) in the Yangtze Estuary between 1983 to 2018 using hydrology, multibeam echo sounding and historical bathymetry datasets. Decadal changes in riverbed volume and erosion/deposition patterns in the SCSP were assessed. The results showed that the SCSP experienced substantial deposition with a total volume of 26.90 × 107 m3 during 1983–2002, but significant bed erosion with a total volume of 26.04 ×107 m3 during 2003–2010. From 2011 to 2018, the estuarine riverbeds shifted from erosive to depositional, even though the deposition was relatively marginal (0.76 ×107 m3). We inferred that the SCSP have most likely changed from a net erosion phase to a deposition stage in response to local human activities including sand mining, river regulation project, and Deep Water Channel Regulation Project). The channel aggradation will possibly continue considering sea level rise and the ongoing anthropogenic impacts. This is the first field evidence reporting that the lowermost Yangtze River is reaching an equilibrium state in terms of channel erosion and, in fact, the Yangtze River Estuary channels are beginning to aggrade. The findings have relevant implications for the management of the Yangtze River and other lowland alluvial rivers in the world as global sea level continues rising and human intervention on estuarine systems persists. The transport of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from the soils to inland waters plays an important role in the global carbon cycle. Widespread increases in DOC concentrations have been observed in surface waters over the last few decades, affecting carbon balances, ecosystem functioning and drinking water treatment. However, the primary hydrological controls on DOC mobilization are still uncertain. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of microtopography in the riparian zone for DOC export and DOM quality. DOC concentration and DOM quality in the shallow groundwater of a riparian zone and in streamflow in a forested headwater catchment was investigated using fluorescence and absorbance characteristics. We found higher DOC concentrations with a higher aromaticity in the microtopographical depressions, which were influenced by highly dynamic shallow groundwater levels, than in the flat forest soil. As a result of the frequent wet‐dry cycles in the upper soil layers, aromatic DOC accumulated in the shallow groundwater within and below the microtopographical depressions. Rising groundwater levels during precipitation events led to the connection of the microtopographical depressions to the stream, resulting in a change toward more aromatic DOC in the stream. Increasing stream DOC concentrations were accompanied by increasing concentrations of iron and aluminum, suggesting the coupled release of these metals with DOC from the riparian zone. Our results highlight the importance of the interplay between microtopography and groundwater level dynamics in the riparian zone for DOC export from headwater catchments. It accumulates in the soil and is transported to streams mainly during precipitation events. In this study, we analyzed the shallow groundwater of two differing sites in the Bavarian Forest National Park. Both sites were located close to the stream, but one was characterized by typical forest soil and one by small ponds, which were occasionally filled with water. The site with ponds showed much higher DOC concentrations and the DOC was chemically different from the other site. During a precipitation event, we observed a shift in chemical composition of stream water parameters toward the chemical characteristics found at the site with ponds. Therefore, we conclude that the ponds contribute substantially to DOC mobilization, once they fill with water and get connected to the stream. Chasing is one of the main decorative techniques found in metal work. The imprints left by different chasing tools are unique not only to the tool, but also to the chaser. The analysis and characterisation of toolmarks provide vast information that is valuable for the understanding of an object. Microtopography is a non-contact imaging technique that allows a metrical analysis of a surface on a microscopic scale. In this paper, metal mock-ups made using different chasing tools were scanned using microtopography, and their morphological features were used to classify the tools used for their fabrication. The mock-ups were artificially aged to replicate conditions of real archaeological metal objects. The overall classification accuracy obtained for the non-aged mock-ups was 91% for brass and 84% for copper mock-ups. After ageing, the classification accuracy was 65% for brass and 68% for copper. The change in classification accuracy before and after ageing was caused by the corrosion on the aged mock-ups. Marine soft sediments play crucial roles in global biogeochemical cycles and biodiversity. Yet, with organisms often hidden in the sediment, they pose challenges for effective monitoring and management. This study introduces a novel approach utilizing sediment microtopography as a proxy for ecosystem functioning and biodiversity. Combining field sampling, benthic chamber incubations, and advanced Structure-from-Motion photogrammetry techniques, we investigated the relationships between microtopographic features and various ecological parameters across diverse subtidal habitats. Our findings reveal strong associations between sediment microtopography and environmental variables, benthic fluxes, biodiversity metrics, and community functional traits, with microtopography consistently explaining more than 50% of the variance in the data. This research demonstrates the potential of sediment microtopography as a cost-effective and scalable tool for assessing soft-sediment ecosystem dynamics and informing conservation strategies. By providing insights into the links between habitat structure and ecological processes, this study advances our understanding of marine benthic ecology and opens new possibilities for habitat assessment applications worldwide., (© 2024 The Author(s). Turbine blade root are commonly processed by grinding, and the grinding process parameters determine the surface quality and fatigue performance.The effect and mechanism of grinding parameters are investigated on the surface roughness and hardness of third generation nickel-based single crystal super-alloy DD9 based on orthogonal experiment.The experimental results show that grinding surface roughness is mostly affected by the wheel speed vs, followed by the workpiece feed vw, the grinding depth ap is few effects on the grinding surface roughness.The machining hardening is appeared at the grinding surface for grinding DD9, the hardening degree is ranged from 1.9% to 13.8%, and the depths of hardening layer are between 60 and 120 μm.In order to obtain a surface with small surface roughness, uniform texture and small degree of hardening in grinding DD9 super-alloy, a grinding parameter scope is recommended as, vs∈[20 m/s,25 m/s], vw∈[12 m/min,16 m/mim], ap∈[10 μm,15 μm].

Prediction of transmission line icing is a key technology to ensure the normal operation of transmission lines in Beijing during the icing season. Aiming at Beijing area, Pearson correlation coefficient and grey system correlation degree analysis method were used to study the correlation between ice cover thickness and micrometeorological and microtopography based on historical data, and the results show that humidity, slope direction, wind direction and elevation had a higher degree of influence on ice cover thickness. The ice cover prediction model based on the extremely randomized trees model and the grey system prediction model was built by combining various environmental characteristics. The root mean square error(RMSE) of the prediction results of different models was compared, and the grey system prediction model based on the combination of humidity and wind direction was the best. The results show that, compared with the similar prediction methods, the influence of micro-topography on icing thickness prediction is considered, and the environmental factors with high correlation of icing thickness of transmission lines in Beijing are humidity, aspect, wind direction and elevation. Compared with the icing prediction models constructed by various environmental factors, the root mean square error of the grey system prediction model combining humidity and wind direction is significantly better than other combinations, which can effectively realize the icing prediction of transmission lines in Beijing. Understanding the factors affecting the growth of plantation forests can reduce the loss of economic and ecological values caused by plantation forest subhealth. Plantation forests are widely distributed in hilly areas with microtopographic features. Microtopography influences climatic factors associated with plant growth, during not only general time but also extreme events like droughts. However, little research has been conducted on the effects of microtopography on the plantation forest growth. In this paper, we selected Pinus tabulaeformis planted in a hilly site, and studied the effect of microtopography on the climate-growth relationship and drought response of a typical plantation in Northeast China using dendroecological methods. We found: 1) Between hill positions, temperature caused a climatic growth difference. Compared to the hilltop, the correlation of annual growth on the hillside with monthly temperature was more negative in July-August and less positive in January-April. 2) Between aspects, precipitation intensities caused a climatic growth difference. Compared to the sunny slope, the correlation of annual growth on the shady slope with monthly total precipitation below 10 mm/day was less positive (May-June) or more negative (March-April and July), while that with monthly total precipitation above 10 mm/day was more positive in most months.3) Drought response varied significantly based on hill position and aspect. There was no significant difference in resistance between hill positions, while recovery and resilience on the hilltop were greater than those on the hillside. Resistance, recovery, and resilience were all lower on the sunny slope than those on the shady slope. Overall, microtopography exists the effects on the growth of plantation forests, both in terms of climate-growth relationships in general climate and in response to drought when extreme events. Meanwhile, the climatic factors that caused the difference in growth of plantation forests between hill positions and aspects differed. The difference in growth between hill positions was caused by temperature, while that between aspects was caused by precipitation intensity. Drought response difference reflected the legacy effect of drought on plantation growth, which could lead to subsequent changes in climate-growth relationships. Northern peatlands are globally important long‐term sinks of carbon due to their predominantly saturated conditions. However, these ecosystems are expected to become drier with climate change, potentially leading to shrubification. As such, the response of the shrubification–evapotranspiration (ET) feedback may be of critical importance to future peatland energy, water and carbon dynamics. We examined the effect of multi‐decadal peatland water table (WT) alteration at three adjacent sites with increasing depth to WT (WET, INTermediate, and DRY). In order to better understand the WT–shrubification–ET feedback, we measured peatland vegetation composition, microtopography and ET partitioning, where ET was measured at the ecosystem, microform, and leaf level using eddy covariance (EC), chambers and porometry, respectively. Averaged across microforms and WT treatments, there was a difference in the median measured leaf resistance (rleaf) between plant functional types ranging from 213 s m−1 for erect dwarf shrubs, 325 s m−1 for graminoids/sedges, and 520 s m−1 for prostrate dwarf shrubs. Scaled based on LAI, the low rleaf of erect dwarf shrubs dominated hummocks, where sites with a higher proportion of hummocks had lower median canopy resistance (rv) of 141, 133 and 130 s m−1 at the WET, INT and DRY sites respectively. Nevertheless, ET was highest at the WET site and similar between the INT and DRY sites, with greater evaporation from the moss surface at the WET site. Porometry and EC data along with a three‐source model were used to independently assess the evaporative contribution from the moss surface, which ranged from 17% to 40%. For moderate and persistent changes in WT from land‐use or climate change, our results suggest vegetation succession is minimal, but the microtopographic development and the concomitant differences in LAI for the various plant functional types is key to understanding changes in total ET and partitioning. The island is greatly affected by the sea breeze, hence its wind field characteristics are constantly changing. Accurate understanding of its wind characteristics is the basis of wind resistance design for related construction. However, the existing mathematical models describing the characteristics of wind field are usually only suitable for inland flat terrain, which is not enough to describe the wind environment similar to island terrain. Therefore, the wind tunnel test method was used to study the wind field characteristics in a valley on Nan'ao Island. The results show that the closer to the center of the valley, the greater the variation of mean wind speed profile and turbulence intensity profile. The results show that the power spectrum of fluctuating wind speed at each measuring point under the main wind direction is in good agreement with the Von-Karman spectrum. Nocturnal spatial variation of temperature, wind, and turbulence over microtopography is generally poorly understood. Low amplitude microtopography covers much of the Earth's surface and, with very stable conditions, can produce significant spatial variations of temperature and turbulence. We examine such variations over gentle terrain that include two shallow gullies that feed into a small valley. The gullies are covered by a sub-network of seven flux stations that is embedded within a larger network that covers the valley. The measurements indicate that gullies of only 2–5-m depth and 100-m width can often lead to spatial variations of temperature of several kelvin or more. Such variations depend on ambient wind speed and direction and the near-surface stratification. We investigate the surprising importance of microscale lee turbulence occurring over the gentle microtopography with slopes of only 5%. Near-surface stratification unexpectedly tends to increase with surface elevation on the slopes. We examine the potential causes of this puzzling behaviour of the near-surface stratification. Plain farmland areas without significant topographic slope exhibit microtopographic features of different scales. Quantitative assessment of the effects of microtopography at different scales on runoff generation in typical farmland areas is of great significance for regional water resources management and flood disaster forecasting. The main objective of the study was to develop an event-based rainfall–runoff model based on the layered Green–Ampt model (LGAM) with the consideration of plot-scale microtopographic features in plain farmland areas. Our experimental field, located in Taihu Lake Basin, was classified into three types of topographic subunits (i.e., main field, rill, and ditch) according to the average elevation. To simplify the concentration process for three topographic subunits, the average concentration time method was employed. Here, various experimental scenarios were simulated, including two classical unsteady rainfall events in homogeneous soil, one ponding infiltration experiment, and two typical rainfall–runoff events in the experimental field. We found that the multilayered setting showed higher accuracy than the homogeneous setting for simulating infiltration in the ponding infiltration experiment in the field. The RMSE of simulated ponding water depth reduced from 0.166 cm to 0.035 cm and NSE rose from 0.988 to 0.999. The simulated hydrograph considering microtopography effects proved higher accuracy than that under unified topography assumption. After classifying topography, the RMSE and NSE of simulated hydrographs decreased and increased, respectively. The lower the topographic subunit, the earlier the outflow occurred. At the early stage, the runoff mostly originated from the relatively low topographic subunits. Infiltration-excess regime under saturated condition may initially dominate in the low-lying ditch under intense rainfall, with extremely high runoff coefficient. Concentration process in the plain farmland area was affected by both rainfall intensity and microtopography. The greater the rainfall intensity, the shorter the average concentration time. The concentration velocity under heavy rainfall was four times faster than that under light rainfall. The lower topographic subunit was characterized by shorter concentration pathway and average concentration time. Ditches reduced the peak flow and advanced the time to peak. This quantitative study provides new insights into effects of microtopography on runoff generation in plain farmland area as well as an effective alternative for plot-scale rainfall–runoff modeling. 【Objective】 Crust is a thin soil layer formed on soil surface when water on the soil surface recedes; continuing soil drying after that could result in cracks to develop. Crusts and cracks could significantly affect water infiltration and soil water evaporation, and the purpose of this paper is to experimentally study how crusts form and cracks subsequently develop following a rainfall on a slope. 【Method】 The experiment was conducted on a slope watered by artificial rainfall. After the rainfall stopped, we measured physical properties of the crusts, imaged the initiation and development of cracks in them at different locations on the slop. These images were processed using MATLAB to quantify their morphological characteristics as well as their relationship with soil water content. 【Result】 Based on where the crusts were formed, they can be classified into structural crusts, depositional crusts and transitional crusts, with different physical properties. The depositional crusts have the highest volumetric weight and clay content. In contrast, the structural crusts have the greatest sand particle content. The morphology of cracks developed in the crusts at different locations in the gully differed from each other significantly. For crusts where the cracks developed, their impacts on crack area ratio (RC), length density of the cracks (LC), and the average width of the crack (Wi) were ranked in the order of depositional crusts

Dynamic of sandy alpine grasslands affect the progress and reversal of desertification in source regions of the Yangtse Rivers. To understand geomorphic driving mechanism of species distribution pattern, we examined the species compositions and delineated the most important landform factors influencing species distribution of sandy alpine grassland using two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN), detrended correspondence analysis (DCA), and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). Field survey were conducted in summer of 2016 using stratified random methods in hilly sloped lands, floodplains, foothills, and valley land of study region. In total, 29 plant species grouped into 27 genera and 16 families were identified. Leymus secalinus, Elymus dahuricus and Corispermum declinatum are the dominant species of sandy alpine grassland communities in different microtopography. The present vegetation reflected xerosere character, which indicated that desertification of alpine grassland is in progress. Standard frequency distribution of species varied with different microtopography, the proportion of dominant species was generally lower than rare species, and the vegetation community was in a highly successional stage. Seven groups were distinguished through TWINSPAN, distribution of which in the DCA ordination graph showed species with similar ecotype is clustered together. The results of the CCA ordination revealed that slope and aspect are the dominant factors among microtopography determining the species distribution of sandy alpine grassland.

Orthopedic implants are widely used for the treatment of bone defects caused by injury, infection, tumor and congenital diseases. However, poor osseointegration and implant failures still occur frequently due to the lack of direct contact between the implant and the bone. In order to improve the biointegration of implants with the host bone, surface modification is of particular interest and requirement in the development of implant materials. Implant surfaces that mimic the inherent surface roughness and hydrophilicity of native bone have been shown to provide osteogenic cells with topographic cues to promote tissue regeneration and new bone formation. A growing number of studies have shown that cell attachment, proliferation and differentiation are sensitive to these implant surface microtopography. This review is to provide a summary of the latest science of surface modified bone implants, focusing on how surface microtopography modulates osteoblast differentiation in vitro and osseointegration in vivo, signaling pathways in the process and types of surface modifications. The aim is to systematically provide comprehensive reference information for better fabrication of orthopedic implants.

• Microtopography and hydrological regulation significantly alter CO 2 and CH 4 fluxes. • Hummocks emit the most CO 2 , followed by transition zones and hollows. • Water table fluctuations stimulate CO 2 and CH 4 emissions in the transition zone. • Fe(II) affects enzyme activity, causing different CO 2 and CH 4 soil emissions. • Hummocks could potentially emit CH 4 due to increased humidity. Inland urban wetlands are significant sources of CO 2 and CH 4. Wetland carbon fluxes can be influenced by management (e.g., restoration), impacting atmospheric carbon emissions. However, the regulatory mechanisms underlying the variations in CO 2 and CH 4 fluxes affected by microtopography and hydrological regulation, such as the water table, remain unclear, and field monitoring is inadequate. This study measured CO 2 and CH 4 fluxes and soil physicochemical properties across various micro-terrains in the restored Guangdong Guangzhou Haizhu Wetland in China and analyzed the direct and indirect effects of these factors on carbon flux. The results showed that the CO 2 flux was lower than most previously reported urban wetland fluxes, with means of 3.41, 2.08, and 1.04 mmol·m−2·d−1 for hummocks, transition zones, and hollows, respectively. Similarly, the CH 4 flux was lower than most previously reported fluxes in natural wetlands, with averages of 0.00027, 0.435, and 0.0087 mmol·m−2·d−1 for hummocks, transition zones, and hollows, respectively. Microtopography significantly reduced the CO 2 flux, while saturated regions such as transition zones and hollows released CH 4. Water level fluctuations primarily caused the elevated CO 2 and CH 4 emissions from transition zones compared to hollows. Redundancy analysis indicated that hydrolytic enzyme activity (73.85 %) and temperature (70.96 %) explained most of the variation in carbon flux. Path analysis revealed that microtopography influenced soil temperature, iron oxide contents, and enzyme activity via regulating the water level to affect CO 2 and CH 4 fluxes indirectly, with total variances of 69 % and 66 %, respectively. Overall, microtopography alters the patterns of CO 2 /CH 4 flux, and appropriate hydrological regulation can reduce carbon emissions. Based on the complex changes in urban hydrology, this study emphasizes that wetland restoration strategies must consider topographic structures and hydrological management to mitigate carbon emissions. • Microtopography could weaken the influence of soil-terrain factors on soil water. • Microtopography mainly affects deep layer soil water content. • Terraced microtopography improved soil water storage and temporal stability. • The most stable points of soil water usually correspond to a relatively flat middle slope area. Terraces have consistently been regarded as crucial measures for water conservation and vegetation restoration, particularly in mountainous environments. However, the hydrological effects of terraces in artificial forests have been rarely studied. In this study, detailed topography, soil properties and high-resolution (30 sites) soil water data (0–70 cm) observed from March 2015 to March 2016 were collected at hillslope scale (0.2 ha). The effects of static (soil properties and topography) and dynamic factors (precipitation) on the dynamics and variability of soil water content (SWC) were studied based on statistical methods, temporal stability and variance decomposition methods. The results showed that slope, topographic wetness index (TWI) and microtopography were the main control factors of different soil layers (shallow, middle and deep layer), which explained 37.2 %, 48.6 % and 47.3 % of the total variance of corresponding soil layers, respectively. Microtopography primarily affects deep layer soil water (40–70 cm). Level terraces show significantly higher soil water content (SWC) (30.89 ± 5.28 %) compared to gentle slopes (25.40 ± 5.33 %), steep slopes (27.05 ± 5.74 %), and scarps (19.71 ± 4.43 %) (P<0.05). Temporal stability of soil water varied across different depths, with shallow layer soil water exhibiting significantly weaker stability compared to other depths, the most representative point of different soil layers was located on relatively flat terraces. Decomposition of spatial variance revealed that the time-invariant component was the primary contributor to the total spatial variance, with a mean value over 70 %. These results highlight that microtopography could weaken the influence of soil-terrain factors on soil water, and the implementation of level terraces can enhance hillslope hydrological conditions in the Rocky Mountain area.
