We use data from the GAMA and GALEX surveys to demonstrate that the UV upturn, an unexpected excess of ultraviolet flux from a hot stellar component, seen in the spectra of many early-type galaxies, arises from processes internal to individual galaxies with no measurable influence from the galaxies' larger environment. We first define a clean sample of passive galaxies without a significant contribution to their UV flux from low-level star formation. We confirm that galaxies with the optical colours of red sequence galaxies often have signs of residual star formation, which, without other information, would prevent a convincing demonstration of the presence of UV upturns. However, by including (NUV$-u$) and {\it WISE} (W2-W3) colours, and FUV data where it exists, we can convincingly constrain samples to be composed of non-star-forming objects. Using such a sample, we examine GALEX photometry of low redshift GAMA galaxies in a range of low-density environments, from groups to the general field, searching for UV upturns. We find a wide range of (NUV$-r$) colours, entirely consistent with the range seen -- and attributed to the UV upturn -- in low-redshift red sequence cluster galaxies. The range of colours is independent of group multiplicity or velocity dispersion, with isolated passive galaxies just as likely to have blue UV-to-optical colours, implying significant upturn components, as those in richer groups and in the previous data on clusters. We analyse the presence of dust around galaxy group members through the reddening of background quasars. By taking into account quasar colour and their dependence on redshift and angular position, we derive mean quasar colours excess in projected regions around member galaxies and infer the associated dust mass. For disc-like galaxies perpendicular to the plane of the sky, and at group-centric distances of the order of the virial radius, thus likely to reside in the infall regions of groups, we find systematic colour excess values $e \sim 0.009 \pm 0.004$ for $g-r$ colour. Under the hypothesis of Milky Way dust properties we derive dust masses of $5.8 \pm 2.5 \cdot 10^8 M_{\odot}/h$, implying that a large fraction of dust is being stripped from galaxies in their path to groups. We also studied the photometry of member galaxies to derive a colour asymmetry relative to the group centre direction from a given galaxy. We conclude that the regions of galaxies facing the centre are bluer, consistent with the effects of gas compression and star-formation. We also combine these two procedures finding that galaxies with a small colour asymmetry show the largest amounts of dust towards the external regions compared to a control sample. We conclude that dust removal is very efficient in galaxies on infall. The fact that galaxies redder towards groups centres are associated to the strongest reddening of background quasars suggest that gas removal induced by ram pressure stripping plays a key role in galaxy evolution and dust content., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We investigate the impact of uncertainty in the metallicity-specific star formation rate over cosmic time on predictions of the rates and masses of double compact object mergers observable through gravitational waves. We find that this uncertainty can change the predicted detectable merger rate by more than an order of magnitude, comparable to contributions from uncertain physical assumptions regarding binary evolution, such as mass transfer efficiency or supernova kicks. We statistically compare the results produced by the COMPAS population synthesis suite against a catalog of gravitational-wave detections from the first two Advanced LIGO and Virgo observing runs. We find that the rate and chirp mass of observed binary black hole mergers can be well matched under our default evolutionary model with a star formation metallicity spread of $0.39$ dex around a mean metallicity $\left$ that scales with redshift $z$ as $\left=0.035 \times 10^{-0.23 z}$, assuming a star formation rate of $0.01 \times (1+z)^{2.77} / (1+((1+z)/2.9)^{4.7}) \, \rm{M}_\odot$ Mpc$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$. Intriguingly, this default model predicts that 80\% of the approximately one binary black hole merger per day that will be detectable at design sensitivity will have formed through isolated binary evolution with only dynamically stable mass transfer, i.e., without experiencing a common-envelope event., Comment: 22 pages, 17 figures. We study a suite of extremely high-resolution cosmological Feedback in Realistic Environments simulations of dwarf galaxies ($M_{\rm halo} \lesssim 10^{10}\rm \, M_{\odot }$), run to z = 0 with $30\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }$ resolution, sufficient (for the first time) to resolve the internal structure of individual supernovae remnants within the cooling radius. Every halo with $M_{\rm halo} \gtrsim 10^{8.6}\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }$ is populated by a resolved stellar galaxy, suggesting very low-mass dwarfs may be ubiquitous in the field. Our ultra-faint dwarfs (UFDs; $M_{\ast }\lt 10^{5}\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }$) have their star formation (SF) truncated early (z ≳ 2), likely by reionization, while classical dwarfs ($M_{\ast }\gt 10^{5}\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }$) continue forming stars to z < 0.5. The systems have bursty star formation histories, forming most of their stars in periods of elevated SF strongly clustered in both space and time. This allows our dwarf with M*/Mhalo > 10−4 to form a dark matter core ${\gt}200\rm \, pc$, while lower mass UFDs exhibit cusps down to ${\lesssim}100\rm \, pc$, as expected from energetic arguments. Our dwarfs with $M_{\ast }\gt 10^{4}\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }$ have half-mass radii (R1/2) in agreement with Local Group (LG) dwarfs (dynamical mass versus R1/2 and stellar rotation also resemble observations). The lowest mass UFDs are below surface brightness limits of current surveys but are potentially visible in next-generation surveys (e.g. LSST). The stellar metallicities are lower than in LG dwarfs; this may reflect pre-enrichment of the LG by the massive hosts or Pop-III stars. Consistency with lower resolution studies implies that our simulations are numerically robust (for a given physical model).

Post-starburst galaxies, identified by their unusually strong Balmer absorption lines and weaker than average emission lines, have traditionally been selected based on their central stellar populations. Here we identify 360 galaxies with post-starburst regions from the MaNGA integral field survey and classify these galaxies into three types: 31 galaxies with central post-starburst regions (CPSB), 37 galaxies with off-center ring-like post-starburst regions (RPSB) and 292 galaxies with irregular post-starburst regions (IPSB). Focussing on the CPSB and RPSB samples, and comparing their radial gradients in D$_n$4000, H$\delta_{\rm A}$ and W(H$\alpha$) to control samples, we find that while the CPSBs have suppressed star formation throughout their bulge and disk, and clear evidence of rapid decline of star formation in the central regions, the RPSBs only show clear evidence of recently rapidly suppressed star formation in their outer regions and an ongoing central starburst. The radial profiles in mass-weighted age and stellar $v/\sigma$ indicate that CPSBs and RPSBs are not simply different evolutionary stages of the same event, rather that CPSB galaxies are caused by a significant disruptive event, while RPSB galaxies are caused by disruption of gas fuelling to the outer regions. Compared to the control samples, both CPSB and RPSB galaxies show a higher fraction of interactions/mergers, misaligned gas or bars that might be the cause of the gas inflows and subsequent quenching., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures

Aims. The general consensus is that late-type galaxies undergo intense star-formation, activity while early-type galaxies are mostly inactive. We question this general rule and investigate the existence of star-forming early-type and quiescent late-type galaxies in the local Universe. By computing the physical properties of these galaxies and by using information on their structural properties as well as the density of their local environment, we seek to understand the differences from their ‘typical’ counterparts. Methods. We made use of the multi-wavelength photometric data (from the ultraviolet to the sub-millimetre), for 2209 morphologically classified galaxies in the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey. Furthermore, we separated the galaxies into subsets of star-forming and quiescent based on their dominant ionising process, making use of established criteria based on the WHα width and the [NII/Hα] ratio. Taking advantage of the spectral energy distribution fitting code CIGALE, we derived galaxy properties, such as the stellar mass, dust mass, and star-formation rate, and we also estimated the unattenuated and the dust-absorbed stellar emission, for both the young (≤200 Myr) and old (> 200 Myr) stellar populations. Results. We find that about 47% of E/S0 galaxies in our sample show ongoing star-formation activity and 8% of late-type galaxies are quiescent. The star-forming elliptical galaxies, together with the little blue spheroids, constitute a population that follows the star-forming main sequence of spiral galaxies very well. The fraction of the luminosity originating from young stars in the star-forming early-type galaxies is quite substantial (∼25%) and similar to that of the star-forming late-type galaxies. The stellar luminosity absorbed by the dust (and used to heat the dust grains) is highest in star-forming E/S0 galaxies (an average of 35%) followed by star-forming Sa-Scd galaxies (27%) with this fraction becoming significantly smaller for their quiescent analogues (6% and 16%, for E/S0 and Sa-Scd, respectively). Star-forming and quiescent E/S0 galaxies donate quite different fractions of their young stellar luminosities to heat up the dust grains (74% and 36%, respectively), while these fractions are very similar for star-forming and quiescent Sa-Scd galaxies (59% and 60%, respectively). Investigating possible differences between star-forming and quiescent galaxies, we find that the intrinsic (unattenuated) shape of the SED of the star-forming galaxies is, on average, very similar for all morphological types. Concerning their structural parameters, quiescent galaxies tend to show larger values of the r-band Sérsic index and larger effective radii (compared to star-forming galaxies). Finally, we find that star-forming galaxies preferably reside in lower density environments compared to the quiescent ones, which exhibit a higher percentage of sources being members of groups.

(Abridged) The question of how most stars in the Universe form remains open. While star formation predominantly occurs in young massive clusters, the current framework focuses on isolated star formation. One way to access the bulk of protostellar activity within star-forming clusters is to trace signposts of active star formation with emission from molecular outflows. These outflows are bright in water emission, providing a direct observational link between nearby and distant galaxies. We propose to utilize the knowledge of local star formation as seen with molecular tracers to explore the nature of star formation in the Universe. We present a large-scale statistical galactic model of emission from galactic active star-forming regions. Our model is built on observations of well-resolved nearby clusters. By simulating emission from molecular outflows, which is known to scale with mass, we create a proxy that can be used to predict the emission from clustered star formation at galactic scales. We evaluated the impact of the most important global-star formation parameters (i.e., initial stellar mass function (IMF), molecular cloud mass distribution, star formation efficiency (SFE), and free-fall time efficiency) on simulation results. We observe that for emission from the para-H2O 202 - 111 line, the IMF and molecular cloud mass distribution have a negligible impact on the emission, both locally and globally, whereas the opposite holds for the SFE and free-fall time efficiency. Moreover, this water transition proves to be a low-contrast tracer of star formation. The fine-tuning of the model and adaptation to morphologies of distant galaxies should result in realistic predictions of observed molecular emission and make the galaxy-in-a-box model a tool to analyze and better understand star formation throughout cosmological times., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 16 pages, 13 figures

The intensity mapping of the [CII] 158um line redshifted to the sub-mm window is a promising probe of the z>4 star formation and its spatial distribution into the large-scale structure. To prepare the first-generation experiments (e.g., CONCERTO), we need realistic simulations of the sub-mm extragalactic sky in spectroscopy. We present a new version of the SIDES simulation including the main sub-mm lines around 1mm (CO, [CII], [CI]). This approach successfully reproduces the observed line luminosity functions. We then use our simulation to generate CONCERTO-like cubes (125-305GHz) and forecast the power spectra of the fluctuations caused by the various astrophysical components at those frequencies. Depending on our assumptions on the relation between star formation rate and [CII] luminosity, and the star formation history, our predictions of the z~6 [CII] power spectrum vary by two orders of magnitude. This highlights how uncertain the predictions are and how important future measurements will be to improve our understanding of this early epoch. SIDES can reproduce the CO shot noise recently measured at ~100 GHz by the mmIME experiment. Finally, we compare the contribution of the different astrophysical components at various redshift to the power spectra. The continuum is by far the brightest, by a factor of 3 to 100 depending on the frequency. At 300GHz, the CO foreground power spectrum is higher than the [CII] one for our base scenario. At lower frequency, the contrast between [CII] and extragalactic foregrounds is even worse. Masking the known galaxies from deep surveys should allow to reduce the foregrounds to 20% of the [CII] power spectrum up to z~6.5. However, this masking method will not be sufficient at higher redshifts. Given the multiple energy loss mechanisms of cosmic ray electrons in galaxies, the tightness of the infrared - radio continuum correlation is surprising. We extended the analytical model of galactic disks of Vollmer et al. (2017) by including a simplified prescription for the synchrotron emissivity. The galactic gas disks of local spiral galaxies, low-z starburst galaxies, high-z main sequence starforming, and high-z starburst galaxies are treated as turbulent clumpy accretion disks. The magnetic field strength is determined by the equipartition between the turbulent kinetic and the magnetic energy densities. Our fiducial model, which neither includes galactic winds nor CR electron secondaries, reproduces the observed radio continuum SEDs of most (~70%) of the galaxies. Except for the local spiral galaxies, fast galactic winds can potentially make the conflicting models agree with observations. The observed IR - radio correlations are reproduced by the model within 2 sigma of the joint uncertainty of model and data for all datasets. The model agrees with the observed SFR - radio correlations within ~4 sigma. Energy equipartition between the CR particles and the magnetic field only approximately holds in our models of main sequence starforming galaxies. If a CR electron calorimeter is assumed, the slope of the IR - radio correlation flattens significantly. Inverse Compton (IC) losses are not dominant in the starburst galaxies because in these galaxies not only the gas density but also the turbulent velocity dispersion is higher than in normally starforming galaxies. Equipartition between the turbulent kinetic and magnetic field energy densities then leads to very high magnetic field strengths and very short synchrotron timescales. Dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) at redshift z$\geq$1 are among the most vigorously star-forming galaxies in the Universe. However, their dense ($\geq$10$^5$ cm$^{-3}$ ) gas phase - typically traced by HCN(1-0) - remains almost entirely unexplored: only two DSFGs have been detected in HCN(1-0) to date. We present results of a JVLA survey of the J=1-0 transition of HCN, HCO+, and HNC(1-0) in six strongly lensed DSFGs at z = 2.5 - 3.3, effectively doubling the number of DSFGs with deep observations of these lines. We detect HCN(1-0) emission in one source (J1202+5354, 4.4$\sigma$), with a tentative HCO+ (1-0) detection in another (J1609+6045, 3.3$\sigma$). Spectral stacking yields strict upper limits on the HCN/FIR ($\leq$3.6$\times$10$^{-4}$) and HCN/CO(1-0) ratios ($\leq$0.045). The inferred HCN/FIR ratios (a proxy for the star-formation efficiency) are consistent with those in z$\sim$0 FIR-luminous starbursts. However, the HCN/CO ratios - a proxy for the dense-gas fraction - are a factor of a few lower than suggested by the two previous DSFG detections. Our results imply that most DSFGs have low dense-gas fractions. A comparison with Krumholz & Thompson (2007) models of star-forming galaxies indicates that the bulk of gas in DSFGs is at lower densities ($\approx$10$^2$ cm$^{-3}$ ), similar to "normal" star-forming galaxies, rather than ultraluminous starbursts., Comment: Submitted to A&A 28th April 2022, accepted 19th July 2022

Giant star-forming regions (clumps) are widespread features of galaxies at z approximate to 1-4. Theory predicts that they can play a crucial role in galaxy evolution, if they survive to stellar feedback for >50 Myr. Numerical simulations show that clumps' survival depends on the stellar feedback recipes that are adopted. Up to date, observational constraints on both clumps' outflows strength and gas removal time-scale are still uncertain. In this context, we study a line-emitting galaxy at redshift z similar or equal to 3.4 lensed by the foreground galaxy cluster Abell 2895. Four compact clumps with sizes less than or similar to 280 pc and representative of the low-mass end of clumps' mass distribution (stellar masses less than or similar to 2 x 10(8) M-circle dot) dominate the galaxy morphology. The clumps are likely forming stars in a starbursting mode and have a young stellar population (similar to 10 Myr). The properties of the Lyman-alpha (Ly alpha) emission and nebular far-ultraviolet absorption lines indicate the presence of ejected material with global outflowing velocities of similar to 200-300 km s(-1). Assuming that the detected outflows are the consequence of star formation feedback, we infer an average mass loading factor (eta) for the clumps of similar to 1.8-2.4 consistent with results obtained from hydrodynamical simulations of clumpy galaxies that assume relatively strong stellar feedback. Assuming no gas inflows (semiclosed box model), the estimates of n suggest that the time-scale over which the outflows expel the molecular gas reservoir (similar or equal to 7 x 10(8 )M(circle dot)) of the four detected low-mass clumps is less than or similar to 50 Myr.

We present a study of the relationships and environmental dependencies between stellar mass, star formation rate, and gas metallicity for more than 700 galaxies in groups up to redshift 0.35 from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey. To identify the main drivers, our sample was analyzed as a function of group-centric distance, projected galaxy number density, and stellar mass. By using control samples of more than 16000 star-forming field galaxies and volume limited samples, we find that the highest enhancement in SFR (0.3 dex) occurs in galaxies with the lowest local density. In contrast to previous work, our data show small enhancements of $\sim$0.1 dex in SFR for galaxies at the highest local densities or group-centric distances. Our data indicates quenching in SFR only for massive galaxies, suggesting that stellar mass might be the main driver of quenching processes for star forming galaxies. We can discard a morphological driven quenching, since the S\'ersic index distribution for group and control galaxies are similar. The gas metallicity does not vary drastically. It increases $\sim$0.08 dex for galaxies at the highest local densities, and decreases for galaxies at the highest group-centric distances, in agreement with previous work. Altogether, the local density, rather than group-centric distance, shows the stronger impact in enhancing both, the SFR and gas metallicity. We applied the same methodology to galaxies from the IllustrisTNG simulations, and although we were able to reproduce the general observational trends, the differences between group and control samples only partially agree with the observations, Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

The Kennicutt-Schmidt law is an empirical relation between the star formation rate surface density ($\Sigma_{SFR}$) and the gas surface density ($\Sigma_{gas}$) in disc galaxies. The relation has a power-law form $\Sigma_{SFR} \propto \Sigma_{gas}^n$. Assuming that star formation results from gravitational collapse of the interstellar medium, $\Sigma_{SFR}$ can be determined by dividing $\Sigma_{gas}$ by the local free-fall time $t_{ff}$. The formulation of $t_{ff}$ yields the relation between $\Sigma_{SFR}$ and $\Sigma_{gas}$, assuming that a constant fraction ($\varepsilon_{SFE}$) of gas is converted into stars every $t_{ff}$. This is done here for the first time using Milgromian dynamics (MOND). Using linear stability analysis of a uniformly rotating thin disc, it is possible to determine the size of a collapsing perturbation within it. This lets us evaluate the sizes and masses of clouds (and their $t_{ff}$) as a function of $\Sigma_{gas}$ and the rotation curve. We analytically derive the relation $\Sigma_{SFR} \propto \Sigma_{gas}^{n}$ both in Newtonian and Milgromian dynamics, finding that $n=1.4$. The difference between the two cases is a change only to the constant pre-factor, resulting in increased $\Sigma_{SFR}$ of up to 25\% using MOND in the central regions of dwarf galaxies. Due to the enhanced role of disk self-gravity, star formation extends out to larger galactocentric radii than in Newtonian gravity, with the clouds being larger. In MOND, a nearly exact representation of the present-day main sequence of galaxies is obtained if $\epsilon_{SFE} = \text{constant} \approx 1.1\%$. We also show that empirically found correction terms to the Kennicutt-Schmidt law are included in the here presented relations. Globular clusters are considered to be likely breeding grounds for compact binary mergers. In this paper, we demonstrate how the gravitational-wave signals produced by compact object mergers can act as tracers of globular cluster formation and evolution. Globular cluster formation is a long-standing mystery in astrophysics, with multiple competing theories describing when and how globular clusters formed. The limited sensitivity of electromagnetic telescopes inhibits our ability to directly observe globular cluster formation. However, with future audio-band detectors sensitive out to redshifts of z ≈ 50 for GW150914-like signals, gravitational-wave astronomy will enable us to probe the Universe when the first globular clusters formed. We simulate a population of binary black hole mergers from theoretically motivated globular cluster formation models, and construct redshift measurements consistent with the predicted accuracy of third-generation detectors. We show that we can locate the peak time of a cluster formation epoch during reionization to within 0.05 Gyr after 1 yr of observations. The peak of a formation epoch that coincides with the Universal star formation rate can be measured to within 0.4–10.5 Gyr after 1 yr of observations, depending on the relative weighting of the model components.

Aims. We study how the upcoming Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) data from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory can be employed to constrain the physical properties of normal star-forming galaxies (main-sequence galaxies). Because the majority of the observed LSST objects will have no auxiliary data, we use simulated LSST data and existing real observations to test the reliability of estimates of the physical properties of galaxies, such as their star formation rate (SFR), stellar mass (Mstar), and dust luminosity (Ldust). We focus on normal star-forming galaxies because they form the majority of the galaxy population in the universe and are therefore more likely to be observed with the LSST. Methods. We performed a simulation of LSST observations and uncertainties of 50 385 real galaxies within the redshift range 0 z Herschel Extragalactic Legacy Project (HELP) survey. Our analysis focused on two fields, ELAIS N1 and COSMOS. To obtain the physical properties of the galaxies, we fit their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) using the Code Investigating GALaxy Emission. We simulated the LSST data by convolving the SEDs fitted by employing the multi-wavelength observations. We compared the main galaxy physical properties, such as SFR, Mstar, and Ldust obtained from the fit of the observed multi-wavelength photometry of galaxies (from the UV to the far-IR) to those obtained from the simulated LSST optical measurements alone. Results. We present the catalogue of simulated LSST observations for 23 291 main-sequence galaxies in the ELAIS N1 field and for 9093 galaxies in the COSMOS field. It is available in the HELP virtual observatory. The stellar masses estimated based on the LSST measurements agree with the full UV to far-IR SED estimates because they mainly depend on the UV and optical emission, which is well covered by LSST in the considered redshift range. Instead, we obtain a clear overestimate of the dust-related properties (SFR, Ldust, Mstar) estimated with the LSST alone. They are highly correlated with redshift. We investigate the cause of this overestimate and conclude that it is related to an overestimate of the dust attenuation in both UV and near-IR. We find that it is necessary to employ auxiliary rest-frame mid-IR observations, simulated UV observations, or the far-UV attenuation (AFUV)-Mstar relation to correct for the overestimate. We also deliver the correction formula log10(SFRLSST/SFRreal) = 0.26 ⋅ z2 − 0.94 ⋅ z + 0.87. It is based on the 32 384 MS galaxies detected with Herschel.

We present the KMOS Galaxy Evolution Survey (KGES), a K-band Multi-Object Spectrograph (KMOS) study of the H alpha and [Nii] emission from 288 K-band-selected galaxies at 1.2 less than or similar to z less than or similar to 1.8, with stellar masses in the range -11.5. In this paper, we describe the survey design, present the sample, and discuss the key properties of the KGES galaxies. We combine KGES with appropriately matched samples at lower redshifts from the KMOS Redshift One Spectroscopic Survey (KROSS) and the SAMI Galaxy Survey. Accounting for the effects of sample selection, data quality, and analysis techniques between surveys, we examine the kinematic characteristics and angular momentum content of star-forming galaxies at z approximate to 1.5, approximate to 1, and approximate to 0. We find that stellar mass, rather than redshift, most strongly correlates with the disc fraction amongst star-forming galaxies at z less than or similar to 1.5, observing only a modest increase in the prevalence of discs between z approximate to 1.5 and z approximate to 0.04 at fixed stellar mass. Furthermore, typical star-forming galaxies follow the same median relation between specific angular momentum and stellar mass, regardless of their redshift, with the normalization of the relation depending more strongly on how disc-like a galaxy's kinematics are. This suggests that massive star-forming discs form in a very similar manner across the approximate to 10Gyr encompassed by our study and that the inferred link between the angular momentum of galaxies and their haloes does not change significantly across the stellar mass and redshift ranges probed in this work.

Very little work has been done on star formation in dwarf lenticular galaxies (S0s). We present 2D spectroscopic and millimetre observations made by the Centro Astronómico Hispano Alemán (CAHA) 3.5-m optical and Institut de Radioastronomie Millimétrique (IRAM) 30-m millimetre telescopes, respectively, for a sample of four dwarf S0 galaxies with multiple star formation regions in the field environment. We find that, although most of the sources deviate from the star-forming main-sequence relation, they all follow the Kennicutt-Schmidt law. After comparing the stellar and Hα kinematics, we find that the velocity fields of both stars and ionized gas show no regular motion and the velocity dispersions of both stars and ionized gas are low in regions with high star formation, suggesting that these star-forming S0 galaxies still have significant rotation. This view can be supported by the result that most of these dwarf S0 galaxies are classified as fast rotators. The ratio of the average atomic gas mass to stellar mass ($\sim 47{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$) is much greater than that of the molecular gas mass to stellar mass ($\sim 1{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$). In addition, gas-phase metallicities in star-forming regions are lower than those of non-star-forming regions. This work investigates the fundamental mechanism(s) that drive galaxy evolution in the local Universe. By comparing two proxies of star formation sensitive to different time-scales, such as EW($\rm H\,\alpha$) and colours like g - r, one may distinguish between smooth secular evolution (ageing) and sudden changes (quenching) in the recent star formation history of galaxies. Building upon the results obtained from a former study based on 80 000 Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) single-fibre measurements, we now focus on spatially resolved (on kpc scales) galaxies, comparing with a sample of 637 nearby objects observed by the Calar Alto Legacy Integral-Field Area survey. In general, galaxies cannot be characterized in terms of a single 'evolutionary stage'. Individual regions within galaxies arrange along a relatively narrow ageing sequence, with some intrinsic scatter possibly due to their different evolutionary paths. These sequences, though, differ from one galaxy to another, although they are broadly consistent with the overall distribution found for the (central) SDSS spectra. We find evidence of recent quenching episodes (relatively blue colours and strong $\rm H\,\alpha$ absorption) in a small fraction of galaxies (most notably, low-mass ellipticals), on global scales and individual regions (particularly at high metallicity). In this work, we study the stellar mass -- stellar metallicity relation as a function of the morpho-kinematics of galaxies in {\sc{eagle}} cosmological simulations. According to our findings, at a given stellar mass ($M_\star$), stellar metallicity shows a secondary dependence on the morpho-kinematics of galaxies, which is more evident towards high masses. At the high-mass end ($M_\star \gtrsim 10^{10}~\rm{M}_\odot$), dispersion-supported systems show lower metallicities, on average. In addition, low-mass galaxies with higher rotational support are somewhat more metal-poor. More massive galaxies tend to exhibit flatter morphologies, being prolate systems less metal-enriched, on average. As the redshift $z$ increases, those aforementioned dependences of metallicity on kinematics and morphology tend to become stronger at high masses. These trends are consistent with the dependences of the stellar mass -- gas-phase metallicity relation on gas fraction, star formation rate and stellar age, and the relation of the latter quantities with galaxy morpho-kinematics. We investigate thin and thick stellar disc formation in Milky-Way-mass galaxies using twelve FIRE-2 cosmological zoom-in simulations. All simulated galaxies experience an early period of bursty star formation that transitions to a late-time steady phase of near-constant star formation. Stars formed during the late-time steady phase have more circular orbits and thin-disc-like morphology at $z=0$, whilst stars born during the bursty phase have more radial orbits and thick-disc structure. The median age of thick-disc stars at $z=0$ correlates strongly with this transition time. We also find that galaxies with an earlier transition from bursty to steady star formation have a higher thin-disc fractions at $z=0$. Three of our systems have minor mergers with LMC-size satellites during the thin-disc phase. These mergers trigger short starbursts but do not destroy the thin disc nor alter broad trends between the star formation transition time and thin/thick disc properties. If our simulations are representative of the Universe, then stellar archaeological studies of the Milky Way (or M31) provide a window into past star-formation modes in the Galaxy. Current age estimates of the Galactic thick disc would suggest that the Milky Way transitioned from bursty to steady phase $\sim$6.5 Gyr ago; prior to that time the Milky Way likely lacked a recognisable thin disc., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We present the KMOS Galaxy Evolution Survey (KGES), a $K$-band Multi-Object Spectrograph (KMOS) study of the H$\alpha$ and [NII] emission from 288 $K$ band-selected galaxies at $1.2 \lesssim z \lesssim 1.8$, with stellar masses in the range $\log_{10}(M_{*}/\rm{M}_{\odot})\approx$9-11.5. In this paper, we describe the survey design, present the sample, and discuss the key properties of the KGES galaxies. We combine KGES with appropriately matched samples at lower redshifts from the KMOS Redshift One Spectroscopic Survey (KROSS) and the SAMI Galaxy Survey. Accounting for the effects of sample selection, data quality, and analysis techniques between surveys, we examine the kinematic characteristics and angular momentum content of star-forming galaxies at $z\approx1.5$, $\approx1$ and $\approx0$. We find that stellar mass, rather than redshift, most strongly correlates with the disc fraction amongst star-forming galaxies at $z \lesssim 1.5$, observing only a modest increase in the prevalence of discs between $z\approx1.5$ and $z\approx0.04$ at fixed stellar mass. Furthermore, typical star-forming galaxies follow the same median relation between specific angular momentum and stellar mass, regardless of their redshift, with the normalisation of the relation depending more strongly on how disc-like a galaxy's kinematics are. This suggests that massive star-forming discs form in a very similar manner across the $\approx$ 10 Gyr encompassed by our study and that the inferred link between the angular momentum of galaxies and their haloes does not change significantly across the stellar mass and redshift ranges probed in this work., Comment: 24 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables. Aims. Our goal is to estimate the star formation main sequence (SFMS) and the star formation rate density (SFRD) at z = 0.017 (d . 75 Mpc) using the Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS) first data release, that probes 897.4 deg2 with twelve optical bands. Methods. We extract the Ha emission flux of 805 local galaxies from the J-PLUS filter J0660, being the continuum level estimated with the other eleven J-PLUS bands, and the dust attenuation and nitrogen contamination corrected with empirical relations. Stellar masses (M), Ha luminosities (LHa), and star formation rates (SFRs) were estimated by accounting for parameters covariances. Our sample comprises 689 blue galaxies and 67 red galaxies, classified in the (u - g) vs. (g - z) color–color diagram, plus 49 AGN. Results. The SFMS is explored at log M 8 and it is clearly defined by the blue galaxies, with the red galaxies located below them. The SFMS is described as log SFR = 0.83 log M -8.44. We find a good agreement with previous estimations of the SFMS, especially those based on integral field spectroscopy. The Ha luminosity function of the AGN-free sample is well described by a Schechter function with log L * Ha = 41.34, log f * = -2.43, and a = -1.25. Our measurements provide a lower characteristic luminosity than several previous studies in the literature. Conclusions. The derived star formation rate density at d . 75 Mpc is log SFR = -2.10 ± 0.11, with red galaxies accounting for 15% of the SFRD. We present the updated census and statistics of Lyman-$\alpha$ emitting long gamma-ray bursts host galaxies (LAE-LGRBs). We investigate the properties of a sub-sample of LAE-LGRBs and test the shell model commonly used to fit Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) emission line spectra. Among the LAE-LGRBs detected to date, we select a golden sample of four LAE-LGRBs allowing us to retrieve information on the host galaxy properties and of its interstellar medium gas. We fit their Ly$\alpha$ spectra using the shell model, and constrain its parameters with the observed values. From the comparison of the statistics and properties of LAE-LGRBs to those of LAE samples in the literature, we find evidences of Ly$\alpha$ suppression in dusty systems, and a fraction of LAE-LGRBs among the overall LGRB hosts lower than that found for Lyman-break galaxy (LBG) samples at similar redshift range. However, we find that LAE-LGRBs are representative of Ly$\alpha$ emission from the bulk of UV-selected galaxies at z~2. We find that the golden sample of LAE-LGRBs are complex systems characterized by multiple emission blobs and by signs of possible galaxy interactions. The fitting procedure fails in recovering the HI column densities (NHI) measured from the afterglow spectra, and the other properties described by the shell-model parameters in the cases with very high NHI. The afterglows of most LGRBs and LAE-LGRBs show high NHI, implying that statistically the bulk of Ly$\alpha$ photons expected to be produced by massive stars in the star-forming region hosting the GRB will be surrounded by such opaque lines of sight. We interpret our results in the context of more sophisticated models and of different dominant Ly$\alpha$ emitting regions. We also compare LAE-LGRBs to LAE Lyman continuum (LyC) leakers in the literature in terms of properties identified as possible indirect indicators of LyC leakage. arXiv:2103.03584v1, We use the SPace Infrared telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics (SPICA) project as a template to demonstrate how deep spectrophotometric surveys covering large cosmological volumes over extended fields (1–15 deg2) with a mid-IR imaging spectrometer (17–36 µm) in conjunction with deep photometry with a far-IR camera, at wavelengths which are not affected by dust extinction can answer the most crucial questions in current galaxy evolution studies. A SPICA-like mission will be able for the first time to provide an unobscured three-dimensional (3D, i.e. x, y, and redshift z) view of galaxy evolution back to an age of the universe of less than ∼ 2 Gyrs, in the mid-IR rest frame. This survey strategy will produce a full census of the Star Formation Rate (SFR) in the universe, using polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) bands and fine-structure ionic lines, reaching the characteristic knee of the galaxy luminosity function, where the bulk of the population is distributed, at any redshift up to z ∼ 3.5. Deep follow-up pointed spectroscopic observations with grating spectrometers onboard the satellite, across the full IR spectral range (17–210 µm), would simultaneously measure Black Hole Accretion Rate (BHAR), from high-ionisation fine-structure lines, and SFR, from PAH and low- to mid-ionisation lines in thousands of galaxies from solar to low metallicities, down to the knee of their luminosity functions. We use the 21 cm emission line data from the DINGO-VLA project to study the atomic hydrogen gas H\,{\textsc i} of the Universe at redshifts $z, Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We present a novel method to estimate galaxy physical properties from spectral energy distributions (SEDs), alternate to template fitting techniques and based on self-organizing maps (SOM) to learn the high-dimensional manifold of a photometric galaxy catalog. The method has been previously tested with hydrodynamical simulations in Davidzon et al. (2019) while here is applied to real data for the first time. It is crucial for its implementation to build the SOM with a high quality, panchromatic data set, which we elect to be the "COSMOS2020" galaxy catalog. After the training and calibration steps with COSMOS2020, other galaxies can be processed through SOM to obtain an estimate of their stellar mass and star formation rate (SFR). Both quantities result to be in good agreement with independent measurements derived from more extended photometric baseline, and also their combination (i.e., the SFR vs. stellar mass diagram) shows a main sequence of star forming galaxies consistent with previous studies. We discuss the advantages of this method compared to traditional SED fitting, highlighting the impact of having, instead of the usual synthetic templates, a collection of empirical SEDs built by the SOM in a "data-driven" way. Such an approach also allows, even for extremely large data sets, an efficient visual inspection to identify photometric errors or peculiar galaxy types. Considering in addition the computational speed of this new estimator, we argue that it will play a valuable role in the analysis of oncoming large-area surveys like Euclid or the Legacy Survey of Space and Time at the Vera Cooper Rubin Telescope., Comment: to appear on A&A

In the local universe, galaxies in clusters show different properties compared to more isolated systems. Understanding how this difference originates and whether it is already in place at high redshift is still a matter of debate. Thanks to uniquely deep optical spectra from the VANDELS survey, we investigate environmental effects on the stellar mass-metallicity relation (MZR) for a sample of ~1000 star-forming galaxies at 2, Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A ; 22 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables, and 1 Appendix

Aims. There exists some consensus that the stellar mass surface density (Σ⋆) and molecular gas mass surface density (Σmol) are the main quantities responsible for locally setting the star formation rate. This regulation is inferred from locally resolved scaling relations between these two quantities and the star formation rate surface density (ΣSFR), which have been extensively studied in a wide variety of works. However, the universality of these relations is debated. Here, we probe the interplay between these three quantities across different galactic environments at a spatial resolution of 150 pc. Methods. We performed a hierarchical Bayesian linear regression to find the best set of parameters C⋆, Cmol, and Cnorm that describe the star-forming plane conformed by Σ⋆, Σmol, and ΣSFR, such that logΣSFR = C⋆logΣ⋆ + CmollogΣmol + Cnorm. We also explored variations in the determined parameters across galactic environments, focusing our analysis on the C⋆ and Cmol slopes. Results. We find signs of variations in the posterior distributions of C⋆ and Cmol across different galactic environments. The dependence of ΣSFR on Σ⋆ spans a wide range of slopes, with negative and positive values, while the dependence of ΣSFR on Σmol is always positive. Bars show the most negative value of C⋆ (−0.41), which is a sign of longer depletion times, while spiral arms show the highest C⋆ among all environments (0.45). Variations in Cmol also exist, although they are more subtle than those found for C⋆. Conclusions. We conclude that systematic variations in the interplay of Σ⋆, Σmol, and ΣSFR across different galactic environments exist at a spatial resolution of 150 pc, and we interpret these variations to be produced by an additional mechanism regulating the formation of stars that is not captured by either Σ⋆ or Σmol. Studying environmental variations in single galaxies, we find that these variations correlate with changes in the star formation efficiency across environments, which could be linked to the dynamical state of the gas that prevents it from collapsing and forming stars, or to changes in the molecular gas fraction.

High-redshift dusty star-forming galaxies with very high star formation rates (500 -- 3000 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$) are key to understanding the formation of the most extreme galaxies in the early Universe. Characterising the gas reservoir of these systems can reveal the driving factor behind the high star formation. Using molecular gas tracers like high-J CO lines, neutral carbon lines and the dust continuum, we can estimate the gas density and radiation field intensity in their interstellar media. In this paper, we present high resolution ($\sim$0.4$^{\prime\prime}$) observations of CO(7-6), [CI](2-1) and dust continuum of 3 lensed galaxies from the SPT-SMG sample at $z\sim$ 3 with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. Our sources have high intrinsic star-formation rates ($>$850 M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$) and rather short depletion timescales ($, 29 pages, 26 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A. We present a new derivation of the star formation history (SFH) of the dSph galaxy Fornax in two central regions, characterised by unprecedented precision and age resolution. It reveals that star formation has proceeded in sharp bursts separated by periods of low-level or quiescent activity. The SFH was derived through colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) fitting of two extremely deep Hubble Space Telescope CMDs, sampling the centre and one core radius. The attained age resolution allowed us to single out a major star formation episode at early times, a second strong burst $4.6\pm0.4$ Gyr ago and recent intermittent episodes $\sim2-0.2$ Gyr ago. Detailed testing with mock stellar populations was used to estimate the duration of the main bursts and study the occurrence of low-level star formation between them. The SFHs in both regions show common features, with activity at the same epochs and similar age-metallicity relationship. However, clear indications of a spatial gradient were also found, with mean age increasing with radius and star formation episodes being more prolonged in the centre. While some galaxy evolution models predict bursty SFHs in dwarf galaxies and thus a secular origin of the observed SFH cannot be excluded in Fornax, other evidence points to possible mergers or interactions as the cause of its bursty SFH. In particular, we calculated the Fornax orbit relative to the closest dwarfs and the Milky Way and observed a correspondence between the main intermediate-age and young events and peri-passages of Fornax around the Milky Way, possibly indicating tidally-induced star formation., 20 pages, 12+3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS; corrected error estimation (Figure 5, Sec. 3.3), added Sec. 4.3, appendices, more references, moderate revision of text and figures

Understanding the rate at which stars form is central to studies of galaxy formation. Observationally, the star formation rates (SFRs) of galaxies are measured using the luminosity in different frequency bands, often under the assumption of a time-steady SFR in the recent past. We use star formation histories (SFHs) extracted from cosmological simulations of star-forming galaxies from the FIRE project to analyze the time-scales to which the H${\alpha}$ and far-ultraviolet (FUV) continuum SFR indicators are sensitive. In these simulations, the SFRs are highly time variable for all galaxies at high redshift, and continue to be bursty to z=0 in dwarf galaxies. When FIRE SFHs are partitioned into their bursty and time-steady phases, the best-fitting FUV time-scale fluctuates from its ~10 Myr value when the SFR is time-steady to >~100 Myr immediately following particularly extreme bursts of star formation during the bursty phase. On the other hand, the best-fitting averaging time-scale for H${\alpha}$ is generally insensitive to the SFR variability in the FIRE simulations and remains ~5 Myr at all times. These time-scales are shorter than the 100 Myr and 10 Myr time-scales sometimes assumed in the literature for FUV and H${\alpha}$, respectively, because while the FUV emission persists for stellar populations older than 100 Myr, the time-dependent luminosities are strongly dominated by younger stars. Our results confirm that the ratio of SFRs inferred using H${\alpha}$ vs. FUV can be used to probe the burstiness of star formation in galaxies., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, accepted to MNRAS

This is partly because large-scale transient surveys operate at optical wavelengths, making it challenging to detect transient sources that occur in regions susceptible to high extinction factors. Here we present the discovery and follow-up observations of two CCSNe that occurred in the luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) NGC 3256. The first, SN 2018ec, was discovered using the ESO HAWK-I/GRAAL adaptive optics seeing enhancer, and was classified as a Type Ic with a host galaxy extinction of AV = 2.1−0.1+0.3 mag. The second, AT 2018cux, was discovered during the course of follow-up observations of SN 2018ec, and is consistent with a subluminous Type IIP classification with an AV = 2.1 ± 0.4 mag of host extinction. A third CCSN, PSN J10275082−4354034 in NGC 3256, was previously reported in 2014, and we recovered the source in late-time archival Hubble Space Telescope imaging. Based on template light curve fitting, we favour a Type IIn classification for it with modest host galaxy extinction of AV = 0.3−0.3+0.4 mag. We also extend our study with follow-up data of the recent Type IIb SN 2019lqo and Type Ib SN 2020fkb that occurred in the LIRG system Arp 299 with host extinctions of AV = 2.1−0.3+0.1 and AV = 0.4−0.2+0.1 mag, respectively. Motivated by the above, we inspected, for the first time, a sample of 29 CCSNe located within a projected distance of 2.5 kpc from the host galaxy nuclei in a sample of 16 LIRGs. We find, if star formation within these galaxies is modelled assuming a global starburst episode and normal IMF, that there is evidence of a correlation between the starburst age and the CCSN subtype. We infer that the two subgroups of 14 H-poor (Type IIb/Ib/Ic/Ibn) and 15 H-rich (Type II/IIn) CCSNe have different underlying progenitor age distributions, with the H-poor progenitors being younger at 3σ significance. Massive star evolution at low metallicity is closely connected to many fields in high-redshift astrophysics, but poorly understood. The Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) is a unique laboratory to study this because of its metallicity of 0.2 Zsol, its proximity, and because it is currently forming stars. We used a spectral type catalog in combination with GAIA magnitudes to calculate temperatures and luminosities of bright SMC stars. By comparing these with literature studies, we tested the validity of our method, and using GAIA data, we estimated the completeness of stars in the catalog as a function of luminosity. This allowed us to obtain a nearly complete view of the most luminous stars in the SMC. When then compared with stellar evolution predictions. We also calculated the extinction distribution, the ionizing photon production rate, and the star formation rate. Our results imply that the SMS hosts only 30 very luminous main-sequence stars (M > 40 Msol; L > 10^5 Lsol), which are far fewer than expected from the number of stars in the luminosity range 3*10^4 < L/Lsol < 3*10^5 and from the typically quoted star formation rate in the SMC. Even more striking, we find that for masses above M > 20 Msol, stars in the first half of their hydrogen-burning phase are almost absent. This mirrors a qualitatively similar peculiarity that is known for the Milky Way and Large Magellanic Cloud. This amounts to a lack of hydrogen-burning counterparts of helium-burning stars, which is more pronounced for higher luminosities. We argue that a declining star formation rate or a steep initial mass function are unlikely to be the sole explanations for the dearth of young bright stars. Instead, many of these stars might be embedded in their birth clouds, although observational evidence for this is weak. We present deep far-infrared observations of the nearby edge-on galaxy NGC 891 obtained with the Herschel Space Observatory and the Spitzer Space Telescope. The maps confirm the detection of thermal emission from the inner circumgalactic medium (halo) and spatially resolve a dusty superbubble and a dust spur (filament). The dust temperature of the halo component is lower than that of the disc but increases across a region of diameter ≈8.0 kpc extending at least 7.7 kpc vertically from one side of the disc, a region we call a superbubble because of its association with thermal X-ray emission and a minimum in the synchrotron scale height. This outflow is breaking through the thick disc and developing into a galactic wind, which is of particular interest because NGC 891 is not considered a starburst galaxy; the star formation rate surface density, 0.03 M⊙ yr-1 kpc-2, and gas fraction, just 10 per cent in the inner disc, indicate the threshold for wind formation is lower than previous work has suggested. We conclude that the star formation surface density is sufficient for superbubble blowout into the halo, but the cosmic ray electrons may play a critical role in determining whether this outflow develops into a fountain or escapes from the gravitational potential. The high dust-to-gas ratio in the dust spur suggests the material was pulled out of NGC 891 through the collision of a minihalo with the disc of NGC 891. We conclude that NGC 891 offers an example of both feedback and satellite interactions transporting dust into the halo of a typical galaxy.

Extragalactic studies have demonstrated that there is a moderately tight (≈0.3 dex) relationship between galaxy stellar mass (M⋆) and star formation rate (SFR) that holds for star-forming galaxies at M⋆∼ 3×108–1011M⊙, i.e. the ‘star formation main sequence’. However, it has yet to be determined whether such a relationship extends to even lower mass galaxies, particularly at intermediate or higher redshifts. We present new results using observations for 714 narrow-band H α-selected galaxies with stellar masses between 106 and 1010M⊙ (average of 108.2M⊙) at z≈ 0.07–0.5. These galaxies have sensitive ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared photometric measurements and optical spectroscopy. The latter allows us to correct our H α SFRs for dust attenuation using Balmer decrements. Our study reveals that: (1) for low-SFR galaxies, our H α SFRs systematically underpredict compared to far-UV measurements, consistent with other studies; (2) at a given stellar mass (≈108M⊙), log (specificSFR) evolves asA log (1 + z) with A= 5.26±0.75, and on average, specific SFR increases with decreasing stellar mass; (3) the SFR–M⋆ relation holds for galaxies down to ∼106M⊙ (∼1.5 dex below previous studies), and over lookback times of up to 5Gyr, follows a redshift-dependent relation of log (SFR) ∝ α log (M⋆/M⊙) + β z with α= 0.60±0.01 and β= 1.86±0.07; and (4) the observed dispersion in the SFR–M⋆ relation at low stellar masses is ≈0.3 dex. Accounting for survey selection effects using simulated galaxies, we estimate that the true dispersion is ≈0.5 dex.

Using ALMA data, we have studied the HC$_3$N and continuum emission in the starburst ring (SB ring) and the circumnuclear disc (CND) of the SB/AGN composite galaxy NGC 1068. We have detected emission from vibrationally excited HC$_3$N (HC$_3$N*) only towards one star-forming region of the SB ring. Remarkably, HC$_3$N* was not detected towards the CND despite its large HC$_3$N $v=0$ column density. From LTE and non-LTE modelling of HC$_3$N*, we obtained a dust temperature of $ T_\text{dust} \sim 250$ K and a density of $n_{\text{H}_2}=6\times10^5$ cm$^{-3}$ for this star-forming region. The estimated IR luminosity of $5.8\times10^8$ L$_\odot$ is typical of proto-Super Star Clusters (proto-SSC) observed in the SB galaxy NGC 253. We use the continuum emissions at $147$ GHz and $350$ GHz, along with CO and Pa $\alpha$, to estimate the ages of other $14$ SSCs in the SB ring. We find the youngest SSCs to be associated with the region connecting the nuclear bar with the SB ring, supporting the scenario of sequential star formation. For the CND, our analysis yields $T_\text{dust} \leqslant 100$ K and $n_{\text{H}_2}\sim(3-6)\times10^5$cm$^{-3}$. The very different dust temperatures found for the CND and the proto-SSC indicates that, while the dust in the proto-SSC is being efficiently heated from the inside by the radiation from massive proto-stars, the CND is being heated externally by the AGN, which in the IR optically thin case can only heat the dust to $56$ K. Understanding the process of quenching is one of the major open questions in galaxy evolution and crucial insights may be obtained by studying quenched galaxies at high redshifts at epochs when the Universe and the galaxies were younger and simpler to model. However, establishing the degree of quiescence in high-redshift galaxies is a challenging task. One notable example is Hyde, a recently discovered galaxy at zspec = 3.709. Equally as compact (r1/2 ∼ 0.5 kpc) and massive (M* ∼ 1011 M⊙) as its quenched neighbor Jekyll, it is also extremely obscured yet only moderately luminous in the sub-millimeter. Panchromatic modeling has suggested it could be the first galaxy found in transition to quenching at z > 3, however, the data are also consistent with a broad range of star-formation activity, from fully quenched to moderate star-formation rates (SFR) in the lower scatter of the galaxy main-sequence. Here, we describe Atacama Large Millimeter Array observations of the [C II] 157 μm and [N II] 205 μm far-infrared emission lines. The [C II] emission within the half-light radius is dominated by ionized gas, while the outskirts are dominated by photo-dissociation regions or neutral gas. This suggests that the ionization in the center is not primarily powered by ongoing star formation, and is instead coming from remnant stellar populations formed in an older burst or from a moderate active galactic nucleus . Accounting for this information in the multi-wavelength modeling provides a tighter constraint on the star formation rate of SFR = 50−18+24 M⊙ yr−1 yr−1. This rules out fully quenched solutions and favors SFRs more than factor of two lower than expected for a main-sequence galaxy, confirming the nature of Hyde as a transition galaxy. These results suggest that quenching happens from inside-out and starts before the galaxy expels or consumes all its gas reservoirs. Similar observations of a sample of massive and obscured galaxies would determine whether this is an isolated case or the norm for quenching at high redshift.

Aims: The complexity of star formation at the physical scale of molecular clouds is not yet fully understood. We investigate the mechanisms regulating the formation of stars in different environments within nearby star-forming galaxies from the PHANGS sample. Methods: Integral field spectroscopic data and radio-interferometric observations of 18 galaxies were combined to explore the existence of the resolved star formation main sequence (rSFMS), resolved Kennicutt-Schmidt relation (rKS), and resolved molecular gas main sequence (rMGMS), and we derived their slope and scatter at spatial resolutions from 100 pc to 1 kpc (under various assumptions). Results: All three relations were recovered at the highest spatial resolution (100 pc). Furthermore, significant variations in these scaling relations were observed across different galactic environments. The exclusion of non-detections has a systematic impact on the inferred slope as a function of the spatial scale. Finally, the scatter of the $\Sigma_\mathrm{mol. gas + stellar}$ versus $\Sigma_\mathrm{SFR}$ correlation is smaller than that of the rSFMS, but higher than that found for the rKS. Conclusions: The rMGMS has the tightest relation at a spatial scale of 100 pc (scatter of 0.34 dex), followed by the rKS (0.41 dex) and then the rSFMS (0.51 dex). This is consistent with expectations from the timescales involved in the evolutionary cycle of molecular clouds. Surprisingly, the rKS shows the least variation across galaxies and environments, suggesting a tight link between molecular gas and subsequent star formation. The scatter of the three relations decreases at lower spatial resolutions, with the rKS being the tightest (0.27 dex) at a spatial scale of 1 kpc. Star-forming galaxies (SFGs) emit non-thermal radiation from radio to gamma-rays. We aim to investigate the main mechanisms of global CR transport and cooling in SFGs. The way they contribute in shaping the relations between non-thermal luminosities and SFR could shed light onto their nature. We develop a model to compute the CR populations of SFGs, taking into account their production, transport, and cooling. The model is parameterised only through global galaxy properties, and describes the non-thermal emission in both radio and gamma-rays. We focus on the role of diffusive and advective transport by galactic winds, either driven by turbulent or thermal instabilities. We compare model predictions to observations, for which we compile a homogeneous set of luminosities in these radio bands, and update those available in gamma-rays. Our model reproduces reasonably well the observed relations between the gamma-ray or 1.4 GHz radio luminosities and the SFR, assuming a single power-law scaling of the magnetic field with the latter with index beta=0.3, and winds blowing either at Alfvenic speeds or typical starburst wind velocities. Escape of CR is negligible for > 30 Mo/yr. A constant ionisation fraction of the interstellar medium fails to reproduce the 150 MHz radio luminosity throughout the whole SFR range. Our results reinforce the idea that galaxies with high SFR are CR calorimeters, and that the main mechanism driving proton escape is diffusion, whereas electron escape also proceeds via wind advection. They also suggest that these winds should be CR or thermally-driven at low and intermediate SFR, respectively. Our results globally support that magnetohydrodynamic turbulence is responsible for the dependence of the magnetic field strength on the SFR and that the ionisation fraction is strongly disfavoured to be constant throughout the whole SFR range., Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics (on 18/09/2021)

Relatively few X-ray sources are known that have low-mass galaxies as hosts. This is an important restriction on studies of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), hence black holes, and of X-ray binaries (XRBs) in low-mass galaxies; addressing it requires very large samples of both galaxies and X-ray sources. Here, we have matched the X-ray point sources found in the XXL-N field of the XXL survey (with an X-ray flux limit of ∼6 × 10−15 erg s−1 cm−2 in the [0.5–2] keV band) to galaxies with redshifts from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) G02 survey field (down to a magnitude limit r = 19.8) in order to search for AGNs and XRBs in GAMA galaxies, particularly those of low optical luminosity or stellar mass (fainter than Mr = −19 or $M_* \lesssim 10^{9.5}\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }$). Out of a total of 1200 low-mass galaxies in the overlap region, we find a total of 28 potential X-ray source hosts, though this includes possible background contaminants. From a combination of photometry (optical and infrared colours), positional information, and optical spectra, we deduce that most of the ≃20 X-ray sources genuinely in low-mass galaxies are high-mass X-ray binaries in star-forming galaxies. None of the matched sources in a low-mass galaxy has a BPT classification as an AGN, and even ignoring this requirement, none passes both criteria of close match between the X-ray source position and optical galaxy centre (separation ≤3 arcsec) and high [O iii] line luminosity (above 1040.3 erg s−1).

[Aims]: We study a sample of Hβ emission line sources at z ∼ 0.9 to identify the star-forming galaxies sample and characterise them in terms of line luminosity, stellar mass, star formation rate, and morphology. The final aim is to obtain the Hβ luminosity function of the star-forming galaxies at this redshift. [Methods]: We used the red tunable filter of the instrument Optical System for Imaging low Resolution Integrated Spectroscopy (OSIRIS) at Gran Telescopio de Canarias to obtain the pseudo spectra of emission line sources in the OTELO field. From these pseudo spectra, we identified the objects with Hβ emission. As the resolution of the pseudo spectra allowed us to separate Hβ from [Oâ » III], we were able to derive the Hβ flux without contamination from its adjacent line. Using data from the extended OTELO catalogue, we discriminated AGNs and studied the star formation rate, the stellar mass, and the morphology of the star-forming galaxies. [Results]: We find that our sample is located on the main sequence of star-forming galaxies. The sources are morphologically classified, mostly as disc-like galaxies (76%), and 90% of the sample are low-mass galaxies (M∗ < 1010â M⊠). The low-mass star-forming galaxies at z ∼ 0.9 that were detected by OTELO present similar properties as low-mass star-forming galaxies in the local universe, suggesting that these kinds of objects do not have a favorite epoch of formation and star formation enhancement from z ∼ 1 to now. Our sample of 40 Hβ star-forming galaxies include the faintest Hβ emitters detected so far. This allows us to constrain the faint end of the luminosity function for the Hβ line alone with a minimum luminosity of log L = 39â ergâ s-1, which is a hundred times fainter than previous surveys. The dust-corrected OSIRIS Tunable Emission Line Object survey (OTELO) Hβ luminosity function established the faint-end slope as α =-1.36 ± 0.15. We increased the scope of the analysis to the bright end by adding ancillary data from the literature, which was not dust-corrected in this case. We describe the observations of the low metallicity nearby galaxy AGC 198691 (Leoncino Dwarf) obtained with the Integral Field Unit of the instrument MEGARA at the Gran Telescopio Canarias. The observations cover the wavelength ranges 4304–5198 Å and 6098–7306 Å with a resolving power R ≈ 6000. We present 2D maps of the ionized gas, deriving the extension of the H II region and gas kinematics from the observed emission lines. We have not found any evidence of recent gas infall or loss of metals by means of outflows. This result is supported by the closed-box model predictions, consistent with the oxygen abundance found by other authors in this galaxy and points towards Leoncino being a genuine XMD galaxy. We present for the first time spatially resolved spectroscopy allowing the detailed study of a star-forming region. We use POPSTAR + CLOUDY models to simulate the emission-line spectrum. We find that the central emission-line spectrum can be explained by a single young ionizing cluster with an age of ≈ 3.5 ± 0.5 Myr and a stellar mass of ≈ 2 ×103 M⊙. However, the radial profiles of [OIII] λ 5007Å and the Balmer lines in emission demand photoionization by clusters of different ages between 3.5 and 6.5 Myr that might respond either to the evolution of a single cluster evolving along the cooling time of the nebula (≈ 3 Myr at the metallicity of Leoncino, Z≈ 0.0004) or to mass segregation of the cluster, being both scenarios consistent with the observed equivalent widths of the Balmer lines. © 2021 The Author(s) Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of Royal Astronomical Society., This work is based on observations made with the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC), installed in the Spanish Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos, on the island of La Palma. Proceedings of the International Astronomical Union, Volume 356, pp. 158-162, We tested how the AGN contribution (5%-75% of the total flux) may affect different morphological parameters commonly used in galaxy classification. We carried out all analysis at z ∼ 0 and at higher redshifts that correspond to the COSMOS field. Using a local training sample of >2000 visually classified galaxies, we carried out all measurements with and without the central source, and quantified how the contribution of a bright nuclear point source could affect different morphological parameters, such as: Abraham and Concelice-Bershady indices, Gini, Asymmetry, M20 moment of light, and Smoothness. We found that concentration indexes are less sensitive to both redshift and brightness in comparison to the other parameters. We also found that all parameters change significantly with AGN contribution. At z ∼ 0, up to a 10% of AGN contribution the morphological classification will not be significantly affect, but for ⩾ 25% of AGN contribution late-type spirals follow the range of parameters of elliptical galaxies and can therefore be misclassified early types., TGW acknowledges the support from Bule Hora University. The feedback from young stars (i.e. pre-supernova) is thought to play a crucial role in molecular cloud destruction. In this paper, we assess the feedback mechanisms acting within a sample of 5810 HII regions identified from the PHANGS-MUSE survey of 19 nearby ($ 1$, and expanding, yet there is a small sample of compact HII regions with $P_\mathrm{tot,max}/P_\mathrm{de} < 1$ ($\sim$1% of the sample). These mostly reside in galaxy centres ($R_\mathrm{gal}, Comment: 28 pages total, 16+3 figures, and 3 tables. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

It is still poorly constrained how the densest phase of the interstellar medium varies across galactic environment. A large observing time is required to recover significant emission from dense molecular gas at high spatial resolution, and to cover a large dynamic range of extragalactic disc environments. We present new NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) observations of a range of high critical density molecular tracers (HCN, HNC, HCO+) and CO isotopologues (13CO, C18O) towards the nearby (11.3 Mpc), strongly barred galaxy NGC 3627. These observations represent the current highest angular resolution (1.85"; 100 pc) map of dense gas tracers across a disc of a nearby spiral galaxy, which we use here to assess the properties of the dense molecular gas, and their variation as a function of galactocentric radius, molecular gas, and star formation. We find that the HCN(1-0)/CO(2-1) integrated intensity ratio does not correlate with the amount of recent star formation. Instead, the HCN(1-0)/CO(2-1) ratio depends on the galactic environment, with differences between the galaxy centre, bar, and bar end regions. The dense gas in the central 600 pc appears to produce stars less efficiently despite containing a higher fraction of dense molecular gas than the bar ends where the star formation is enhanced. In assessing the dynamics of the dense gas, we find the HCN(1-0) and HCO+(1-0) emission lines showing multiple components towards regions in the bar ends that correspond to previously identified features in CO emission. These features are co-spatial with peaks of Halpha emission, which highlights that the complex dynamics of this bar end region could be linked to local enhancements in the star formation., Comment: 25 pages, 12 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

We study the impact of AGN ionised outflows on star formation in high-redshift AGN hosts, by combining NIR IFS observations, mapping the H$\alpha$ emission and [OIII] outflows, with matched-resolution observations of the rest-frame FIR emission. We present high-resolution ALMA Band 7 observations of eight X-ray selected AGN at z~2 from the SUPER sample, targeting the rest-frame ~260 um continuum at ~2 kpc (0.2'') resolution. We detected 6 out of 8 targets with S/N>10 in the ALMA maps, with continuum flux densities F = 0.27-2.58 mJy and FIR half-light radii Re = 0.8-2.1 kpc. The FIR Re of our sample are comparable to other AGN and star-forming galaxies at a similar redshift from the literature. However, we find that the mean FIR size in X-ray AGN (Re = 1.16+/- 0.11 kpc) is slightly smaller than in non-AGN (Re = 1.69+/-0.13 kpc). From SED fitting, we find that the main contribution to the 260 um flux density is dust heated by star formation, with < 4% contribution from AGN-heated dust and < 1% from synchrotron emission. The majority of our sample show different morphologies for the FIR (mostly due to reprocessed stellar emission) and the ionised gas emission (H$\alpha$ and [OIII], mostly due to AGN emission). This could be due to the different locations of dust and ionised gas, the different sources of the emission (stars and AGN), or the effect of dust obscuration. We are unable to identify any residual H$\alpha$ emission, above that dominated by AGN, that could be attributed to star formation. Under the assumption that the FIR emission is a reliable tracer of obscured star formation, we find that the obscured star formation activity in these AGN host galaxies is not clearly affected by the ionised outflows. However, we cannot rule out that star formation suppression is happening on smaller spatial scales than the ones we probe with our observations (< 2 kpc) or on different timescales., Comment: 32 pages, 13 figures. We present a study of emission lines of small hydrocarbons C2H and c-C3H2, and COMs precursors H2CO and CH3OH in order to better understand the possible chemical link between the molecular abundances and UV radiation field in photodissociation regions (PDRs). We study two PDRs around extended and compact H ii regions with G ≤ 50 Habings in the S235 star-forming complex. We find the highest abundances of both hydrocarbons on the edges of molecular clumps, while c-C3H2 is also abundant in the low-density expanding PDR around compact H ii region S235 A. We see the highest methanol column density towards the positions with the UV field G ≈ 20-30 Habings and explain them by reactive desorption from the dust grains. The $N_{\rm C_2H}/N_{\rm CH_3OH}$ ratio is lower by a factor of few or the order of magnitude in comparison with the Horsehead and Orion Bar PDRs. The ratio is similar to the value observed in hot corinos in the Perseus cloud. We conclude that ion-molecular and grain surface chemical routes rule the molecular abundances in the PDRs, and the PDRs inherit molecular abundances from the previous dark stage of molecular cloud evolution in spite of massive stars already emitting in optics. © 2021 The Author(s) Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of Royal Astronomical Society.
