Nanowire lasers hold great potential as nanoscale coherent light sources. The rapid wavelength tuning of such light sources is one of the most important parameters for practical applications. Although significant efforts have been made in the past decades, the fast and reversible lasing wavelength tuning in nanowires or structures alike remains a challenge. Here, by incorporating temperature‐dependent Varshni shift of the bandgap with ultralow thermal inertia of a free‐standing cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanowire, a fast lasing wavelength tuning in single nanowires with excellent reversibility is demonstrated. Above room temperature, a Varshni shift rate (≈0.16 nm K−1) twice larger than that at low temperature (≈ 0.085 nm K−1) is observed, and the nanowire lasing peak is tuned from 514 to 549 nm with step down to 0.075 nm K−1. Using a beam of CO2 laser pulses to instantaneously modulate the temperature of a free‐standing lasing nanowire, a reversible wavelength tuning at a rate of ≈48 000 nm s−1, which is about three orders of magnitude faster than that reported previously is achieved. The results herein suggest a very promising route to fast wavelength tuning in lasing nanowires or other nanostructures, which may lead to fast tunable nanolasers for a variety of nanophotonic applications. The nonstoichiometry of I-III-VI semiconductor nanoparticles, especially the ratio of group I to group III elements, has been utilized to control their physicochemical properties. We report the solution-phase synthesis of nonstoichiometric Ag-In-S and Ag-In-Ga-S nanoparticles and results of the investigation of their photoluminescence (PL) properties in relation to their chemical compositions. While stoichiometric AgInS 2 nanoparticles simply exhibited only a broad PL band originating from defect sites in the particles, a narrow band edge PL peak newly appeared with a decrease in the Ag fraction in the nonstoichiometric Ag-In-S nanoparticles. The relative PL intensity of this band edge emission with respect to the defect-site emission was optimal at a Ag/(Ag + In) value of ca. 0.4. The peak wavelength of the band edge emission was tunable from 610 to 500 nm by increased doping with Ga 3+ into Ag-In-S nanoparticles due to an increase of the energy gap. Furthermore, surface coating of Ga 3+ -doped Ag-In-S nanoparticles, that is, Ag-In-Ga-S nanoparticles, with a GaS x shell drastically and selectively suppressed the broad defect-site PL peak and, at the same time, led to an increase in the PL quantum yield (QY) of the band edge emission peak. The optimal PL QY was 28% for Ag-In-Ga-S@GaS x core-shell particles, with green band-edge emission at 530 nm and a full width at half-maximum of 181 meV (41 nm). The observed wavelength tunability of the band-edge PL peak will facilitate possible use of these toxic-element-free I-III-VI-based nanoparticles in a wide area of applications.

Plasmon lasers support cavity structures with sizes below that of the diffraction limit. However, most plasmon-based lasers show bidirectional lasing emission or emission with limited far-field directionality and large radiative losses. Here, we report unidirectional lasing from ultrasmooth, template-stripped two-dimensional (2D) plasmonic crystals. Optically pumped 2D plasmonic crystals (Au or Ag) surrounded by dye molecules exhibited lasing in a single emission direction and their lasing wavelength could be tuned by modulating the dielectric environment. We found that 2D plasmonic crystals were an ideal architecture to screen how nanocavity unit-cell structure, metal material, and gain media affected the lasing response. We discovered that template-stripped strong plasmonic materials with cylindrical posts were an optimal cavity design for a unidirectional laser operating at room temperature.

All-inorganic colloidal cesium lead halide perovskite quantum dots (CsPbX3 , X = Cl, Br, I) are revealed to be a new class of favorable optical-gain materials, which show -combined merits of both colloidal quantum dots and halide perovskites.
