101. Systematic Review of the Job Demands and Resources of Academic Staff within Higher Education Institutions

Abstract

The Higher Education sector has been through an array of changes, such as globalisation, massification, lack of job security, decolonisation and a number of technological advancements. These changes have impacted academic workload and have increased work pressure with resultant effects on family and work life balance. A review of the existing literature indicates a lack of clarity when it comes to the job demands and job resources inherent to the academic occupation. In order to determine the job demands and job resources of academics, a systematic review of empirical literature is warranted. This paper systematically reviewed empirical research published from 2014 to 2019 investigating job demands and resources based on the job demands-resources model in the higher education environment. Six articles were identified that met the criteria for inclusion. Thus, a list of quantitative, qualitative and organisational job demands as well as organisational and personal resources specific to the academic environment were identified. This will allow Higher Education Institutions to provide targeted development of job resources and mitigation of job demands for their academic employees and enable the development of specific interventions. more...

Abstract

BackgroundKnown risk alleles for epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) account for approximately 40% of the heritability for EOC. Copy number variants (CNVs) have not been investigated as EOC risk alleles in a large population cohort.MethodsSingle nucleotide polymorphism array data from 13 071 EOC cases and 17 306 controls of White European ancestry were used to identify CNVs associated with EOC risk using a rare admixture maximum likelihood test for gene burden and a by-probe ratio test. We performed enrichment analysis of CNVs at known EOC risk loci and functional biofeatures in ovarian cancer-related cell types.ResultsWe identified statistically significant risk associations with CNVs at known EOC risk genes; BRCA1 (PEOC = 1.60E-21; OREOC = 8.24), RAD51C (Phigh-grade serous ovarian cancer [HGSOC] = 5.5E-4; odds ratio [OR]HGSOC = 5.74 del), and BRCA2 (PHGSOC = 7.0E-4; ORHGSOC = 3.31 deletion). 103. Laser-Induced Graphitisation of Diamond Under 30 fs Laser Pulse Irradiation

Abstract

The degree of laser-induced graphitisation from a sp3-bonded to a sp2-bonded carbon fraction in a single crystal chemical vapour deposited (CVD) diamond under a varying fluence of an ultrashort pulsed laser (30 fs, 800 nm, 1 kHz) irradiation has been studied. The tetrahedral CVD sp3-phase was found to transition to primarily an sp2-aromatic crystalline graphitic fraction below the critical fluence of 3.9 J/cm2, above which predominantly an amorphous carbon was formed. A fractional increase of fluence from 3.3 J/cm2 to 3.9 J/cm2 (~ 20 %) resulted in a substantial (~ three-fold) increased depth of the sp2-graphitised areas owing to the non-linear interactions associated with an fs-laser irradiation. Additionally, formation of C=O carbonyl group was observed below the critical threshold fluence; the C=O cleavage occurred gradually with the increase of irradiation fluence of 30 fs laser light. Abstract

Motion tracking systems based on optical sensors typically often suffer from issues, such as poor lighting conditions, occlusion, limited coverage, and may raise privacy concerns. More recently, radio frequency (RF)-based approaches using commercial WiFi devices have emerged which offer low-cost ubiquitous sensing whilst preserving privacy. However, the output of an RF sensing system, such as Range-Doppler spectrograms, cannot represent human motion intuitively and usually requires further processing. In this study, MDPose, a novel framework for human skeletal motion reconstruction based on WiFi micro-Doppler signatures, is proposed. It provides an effective solution to track human activities by reconstructing a skeleton model with 17 key points, which can assist with the interpretation of conventional RF sensing outputs in a more understandable way. Specifically, MDPose has various incremental stages to gradually address a series of challenges: First, a denoising algorithm is implemented to remove any unwanted noise that may affect the feature extraction and enhance weak Doppler signatures. Secondly, the convolutional neural network (CNN)-recurrent neural network (RNN) architecture is applied to learn temporal-spatial dependency from clean micro-Doppler signatures and restore key points' velocity information. Finally, a pose optimising mechanism is employed to estimate the initial state of the skeleton and to limit the increase of error. We have conducted comprehensive tests in a variety of environments using numerous subjects with a single receiver radar system to demonstrate the performance of MDPose, and report 29.4mm mean absolute error over all key points positions, which outperforms state-of-the-art RF-based pose estimation systems. more...

Abstract

Haemorrhagic pleural effusion can be a challenging diagnosis that requires a thorough investigation and sometimes a multidisciplinary team of physicians to reach the underlying aetiology. Causes can include pulmonary malignancy, pulmonary infections, connective tissue diseases, asbestos associated, intra-abdominal conditions such as pancreatitis and ovarian tumours, cardiovascular disorders such as ruptured aneurysms and pulmonary infarction, as well as other miscellaneous causes. One such cause is endometriosis in the thoracic cavity. Endometriosis is a chronic illness associated with the occurrence of endometrial tissue outside the endometrium. Insertion of endometrial tissue in the thoracic cavity is rare, with only a few cases described. This case report gives detail of a 30-year-old nulligravida suspected of having thoracic endometriosis following a history of catamenial dyspnoea and associated pleural effusion. The diagnosis was confirmed through the histopathological study of tissue obtained via thoracoscopic surgery. Excision of the endometrial tissue was done, and the patient then continued medical treatment with progestins and gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists. Following therapy, the index patient was asymptomatic. A multidisciplinary approach is often needed in the diagnosis and management of thoracic endometriosis, involving both medical and surgical specialities. Minimally invasive surgery is the gold standard of diagnosis, allowing for direct visualisation of implants and nodules and should be followed by medical treatment to reduce the risk of recurrence. 117. Measuring the Consolidation of DNS and Web Hosting Providers

Abstract

Despite the Internet's continued growth, it increasingly depends on a small set of service providers to support Domain Name System (DNS) and web content hosting. This trend poses many potential threats including susceptibility to outages, failures, and potential censorship by providers. This paper aims to quantify consolidation in terms of popular domains' reliance on a small set of organizations for both DNS and web hosting. We highlight the extent to which a set of relatively few platforms host the authoritative name servers and web content for the top million websites. Our results show that both DNS and web hosting are concentrated, with Cloudflare and Amazon hosting over $30\%$ of the domains for both services. With the addition of Akamai, Fastly, and Google, these five organizations host $60\%$ of index pages in the Tranco top 10K, as well as the majority of external page resources. These trends are consistent across six different global vantage points, indicating that consolidation is happening globally and popular organizations can influence users' online experience across the world. more...

Abstract

This paper presents a comprehensive dataset intended to evaluate passive Human Activity Recognition (HAR) and localization techniques with measurements obtained from synchronized Radio-Frequency (RF) devices and vision-based sensors. The dataset consists of RF data including Channel State Information (CSI) extracted from a WiFi Network Interface Card (NIC), Passive WiFi Radar (PWR) built upon a Software Defined Radio (SDR) platform, and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) signals acquired via commercial off-the-shelf hardware. It also consists of vision/Infra-red based data acquired from Kinect sensors. Approximately 8 hours of annotated measurements are provided, which are collected across two rooms from 6 participants performing 6 daily activities. This dataset can be exploited to advance WiFi and vision-based HAR, for example, using pattern recognition, skeletal representation, deep learning algorithms or other novel approaches to accurately recognize human activities. The Coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has impacted educational practices in all sectors. This study focuses on the teaching style preferences and online teaching practices of optometry teachers during the COVID-19 pandemic.Patients and Methods: The study used a case study research design and a self-administered online questionnaire and follow-up semi-structured interview for data collection. The Grasha-Riechmann teaching style inventory was used to explore the teaching style preferences (Expert, Formal Authority, Demonstrator, Facilitator and Delegator). Quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic content analysis respectively.Results: The optometry teachers were aged between 29 and 51 years (median = 45 years) and had between 3 and 25 years of teaching experience (median = 5 years). All teachers scored high in the Expert teaching style and most had scores categorized as high for the Delegator, Facilitator and Formal Authority teaching styles. The teachers reported that the initial adaptation to online teaching was difficult and challenging as they were not prepared for the rapid transition to online learning. They used various resources and materials but felt that student participation and engagement was lower in online teaching. Teachers noted that more time was needed to prepare materials for online teaching than for face-to-face teaching.Conclusion: Optometry teachers adopted a multidimensional approach preferring the different teaching styles to varying degrees. Abstract

Currently, there are no internationally accepted consensus guidelines for pathologic evaluation of posttherapy pancreatectomy specimens. The Neoadjuvant Therapy Working Group of Pancreatobiliary Pathology Society was formed in 2018 to review grossing protocols, literature, and major issues and to develop recommendations for pathologic evaluation of posttherapy pancreatectomy specimens. The working group generated the following recommendations: (1) Systematic and standardized grossing and sampling protocols should be adopted for pancreatectomy specimens for treated pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). (2) Consecutive mapping sections along the largest gross tumor dimension are recommended to validate tumor size by histology as required by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) cancer protocol. (3) Tumor size of treated PDACs should be measured microscopically as the largest dimension of tumor outer limits that is bound by viable tumor cells, including intervening stroma. (4) The MD Anderson grading system for tumor response has a better correlation with prognosis and better interobserver concordance among pathologists than does the CAP system. (5) A case should not be classified as a complete response unless the entire pancreas, peripancreatic tissues, ampulla of Vater, common bile duct, and duodenum adjacent to the pancreas are submitted for microscopic examination. (6) Future studies on tumor response of lymph node metastases, molecular and/or immunohistochemical markers, as well as application of artificial intelligence in grading tumor response of treated PDAC are needed. In summary, systematic, standardized pathologic evaluation, accurate tumor size measurement, and reproducible tumor response grading to neoadjuvant therapy are needed for optimal patient care. Abstract

Tuberculosis is a respiratory disease that is treatable with antibiotics. An increasing prevalence of resistance means that to ensure a good treatment outcome it is desirable to test the susceptibility of each infection to different antibiotics. Conventionally, this is done by culturing a clinical sample and then exposing aliquots to a panel of antibiotics, each being present at a pre-determined concentration, thereby determining if the sample isresistant or susceptible to each sample. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of a drug is the lowestconcentration that inhibits growth and is a more useful quantity but requires each sample to be tested at a range ofconcentrations for each drug. Using 96-well broth micro dilution plates with each well containing a lyophilised pre-determined amount of an antibiotic is a convenient and cost-effective way to measure the MICs of several drugs at once for a clinical sample. Although accurate, this is still an expensive and slow process that requires highly-skilled and experienced laboratory scientists. Here we show that, through the BashTheBug project hosted on the Zooniverse citizen science platform, a crowd of volunteers can reproducibly and accurately determine the MICs for 13 drugs and that simply taking the median or mode of 11-17 independent classifications is sufficient. There is therefore a potential role for crowds to support (but not supplant) the role of experts in antibiotic susceptibility testing. more...

Abstract

BackgroundMolecular diagnostics are considered the most promising route to achieving rapid, universal drug susceptibility testing for Mycobacterium tuberculosiscomplex (MTBC). We aimed to generate a WHO endorsed catalogue of mutations to serve as a global standard for interpreting molecular information for drug resistance prediction.MethodsA candidate gene approach was used to identify mutations as associated with resistance, or consistent with susceptibility, for 13 WHO endorsed anti-tuberculosis drugs. 38,215 MTBC isolates with paired whole-genome sequencing and phenotypic drug susceptibility testing data were amassed from 45 countries. For each mutation, a contingency table of binary phenotypes and presence or absence of the mutation computed positive predictive value, and Fisher's exact tests generated odds ratios and Benjamini-Hochberg corrected p-values. Mutations were graded as Associated with Resistance if present in at least 5 isolates, if the odds ratio was >1 with a statistically significant corrected p-value, and if the lower bound of the 95% confidence interval on the positive predictive value for phenotypic resistance was >25%. A series of expert rules were applied for final confidence grading of each mutation.Findings15,667 associations were computed for 13,211 unique mutations linked to one or more drugs. 1,149/15,667 (7·3%) mutations were classified as associated with phenotypic resistance and 107/15,667 (0·7%) were deemed consistent with susceptibility. For rifampicin, isoniazid, ethambutol, fluoroquinolones, and streptomycin, the mutations' pooled sensitivity was >80%. Specificity was over 95% for all drugs except ethionamide (91·4%), moxifloxacin (91·6%) and ethambutol (93·3%). Only two resistance mutations were classified for bedaquiline, delamanid, clofazimine, and linezolid as prevalence of phenotypic resistance was low for these drugs.InterpretationThis first WHO endorsed catalogue of molecular targets for MTBC drug susceptibility testing provides a global standard for resistance interpretation. Abstract

We present a joint experimental-theoretical study on the effect of the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of a few-cycle pulse on the atomic excitation process. We focus on the excitation rates of argon as a function of CEP in the intensity range from 50-300 TW/cm$^2$, which covers the transition between the multiphoton and tunneling regimes. Through numerical simulations based on solving the time-dependent Schr\"{o}dinger equation (TDSE), we show that the resulting bound-state population is highly sensitive to both the intensity and the CEP. Because the intensity varies over the interaction region, the CEP effect is considerably reduced in the experiment. Nevertheless, the data clearly agree with the theoretical prediction, and the results encourage the use of precisely tailored laser fields to coherently control the strong-field excitation process. Abstract

We investigate the influence of relativistic nondipole effects on the photoelectron spectra of argon, particularly in the low kinetic energy region (0 eV - 5 eV). In our experiment, we use intense linearly polarised 800 nm laser pulse to ionise Ar from a jet and we record photoelectron energy and momentum distributions using a reaction microscope (REMI). Our measurements show that nondipole effect can cause an energy-dependent asymmetry along the laser propagation direction in the photoelectron energy and momentum spectra. Model simulation based on time-dependent Dirac equation (TDDE) can reproduce our measurement results. The electron trajectory analysis based on classical model reveals that the photoelectron which obtains negative momentum shift along laser propagation direction is caused by the interplay between the Lorenz force induced radiation pressure during its free propagation in continuum and re-scattering by Coulomb potential of the parent ion when it is driven back by the laser field., Comment: 11 pages, 15 Figures more...

Abstract

This work presents an application of Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system for monitoring human activities directly related to healthcare. Real-time monitoring of humans can assist professionals in providing healthy living enabling technologies to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of people of all age groups. To enhance the human activity recognition performance of the ISAC system, we propose to use synthetic data generated through our human micro-Doppler simulator, SimHumalator to augment our limited measurement data. We generate a more realistic micro-Doppler signature dataset using a style-transfer neural network. The proposed network extracts environmental effects such as noise, multipath, and occlusions effects directly from the measurement data and transfers these features to our clean simulated signatures. This results in more realistic-looking signatures qualitatively and quantitatively. We use these enhanced signatures to augment our measurement data and observe an improvement in the classification performance by 5% compared to no augmentation case. Further, we benchmark the data augmentation performance of the style transferred signatures with three other synthetic datasets -- clean simulated spectrograms (no environmental effects), simulated data with added AWGN noise, and simulated data with GAN generated noise. Abstract

Micro-Doppler signatures contain considerable information about target dynamics. However, the radar sensing systems are easily affected by noisy surroundings, resulting in uninterpretable motion patterns on the micro-Doppler spectrogram. Meanwhile, radar returns often suffer from multipath, clutter and interference. These issues lead to difficulty in, for example motion feature extraction, activity classification using micro Doppler signatures ($\mu$-DS), etc. In this paper, we propose a latent feature-wise mapping strategy, called Feature Mapping Network (FMNet), to transform measured spectrograms so that they more closely resemble the output from a simulation under the same conditions. Based on measured spectrogram and the matched simulated data, our framework contains three parts: an Encoder which is used to extract latent representations/features, a Decoder outputs reconstructed spectrogram according to the latent features, and a Discriminator minimizes the distance of latent features of measured and simulated data. We demonstrate the FMNet with six activities data and two experimental scenarios, and final results show strong enhanced patterns and can keep actual motion information to the greatest extent. On the other hand, we also propose a novel idea which trains a classifier with only simulated data and predicts new measured samples after cleaning them up with the FMNet.
