107. Quasitoposes as elementary quotient completions

The elementary quotient completion of an elementary doctrine in the sense of Lawvere was introduced in previous work by the first and third authors. It generalises the exact completion of a category with finite products and weak equalisers. In this paper we characterise when an elementary quotient completion is a quasi-topos. We obtain as a corollary a complete characterisation of when an elementary quotient completions is an elementary topos. As a byproduct we determine also when the elementary quotient completion of a tripos is equivalent to the doctrine obtained via the tripos-to-topos construction. Our results are reminiscent of other works regarding exact completions and put those under a common scheme: in particular, Carboni and Vitale's characterisation of exact completions in terms of their projective objects, Carboni and Rosolini's characterisation of locally cartesian closed exact completions, also in the revision by Emmenegger, and Menni's characterisation of the exact completions which are elementary toposes.

108. Rebounding Cores to Build Star Cluster Multiple Populations

We present a novel approach to the riddle of star cluster multiple populations. Stars form from molecular cores. But not all cores form stars. Following their initial compression, such 'failed' cores re-expand, rather than collapsing. We propose that their formation and subsequent dispersal regulate the gas density of cluster-forming clumps and, therefore, their core and star formation rates. Clumps for which failed cores are the dominant core type experience star formation histories with peaks and troughs. In contrast, too few failed cores results in smoothly decreasing star formation rates. We identify three main parameters shaping the star formation history of a clump: the star and core formation efficiencies per free-fall time, and the time-scale on which failed cores return to the clump gas. The clump mass acts as a scaling factor. We use our model to constrain the density and mass of the Orion Nebula Cluster progenitor clump, and to caution that the star formation histories of starburst clusters may contain close-by peaks concealed by stellar age uncertainties. Our model generates a great variety of star formation histories. Intriguingly, the chromosome maps and O-Na anti-correlations of old globular clusters also present diverse morphologies. This prompts us to discuss our model in the context of globular cluster multiple stellar populations. Substructural logics naturally support a quantitative interpretation of formulas, as they are seen as consumable resources. Distances are the quantitative counterpart of equivalence relations: they measure how much two objects are similar, rather than just saying whether they are equivalent or not. Hence, they provide the natural choice for modelling equality in a substructural setting. In this paper, we develop this idea, using the categorical language of Lawvere's doctrines. We work in a minimal fragment of Linear Logic enriched by graded modalities, which are needed to write a resource sensitive substitution rule for equality, enabling its quantitative interpretation as a distance. We introduce both a deductive calculus and the notion of Lipschitz doctrine to give it a sound and complete categorical semantics. The study of 2-categorical properties of Lipschitz doctrines provides us with a universal construction, which generates examples based for instance on metric spaces and quantitative realisability. Finally, we show how to smoothly extend our results to richer substructural logics, up to full Linear Logic with quantifiers.

Despite the overall improvement in life expectancy of patients living with congenital heart disease (congenital HD), disparities in morbidity and mortality remain throughout the lifespan. Longstanding systemic inequities, disparities in the social determinants of health, and the inability to obtain quality lifelong care contribute to poorer outcomes. To work toward health equity in populations with congenital HD, we must recognize the existence and strategize the elimination of inequities in overall congenital HD morbidity and mortality, disparate health care access, and overall quality of health services in the context of varying social determinants of health, systemic inequities, and structural racism. This requires critically examining multilevel contributions that continue to facilitate health inequities in the natural history and consequences of congenital HD. In this scientific statement, we focus on population, systemic, institutional, and individual-level contributions to health inequities from prenatal to adult congenital HD care. We review opportunities and strategies for improvement in lifelong congenital HD care based on current public health and scientific evidence, surgical data, experiences from other patient populations, and recognition of implicit bias and microaggressions. Furthermore, we review directions and goals for both quantitative and qualitative research approaches to understanding and mitigating health inequities in congenital HD care. Finally, we assess ways to improve the diversity of the congenital HD workforce as well as ethical guidance on addressing social determinants of health in the context of clinical care and research.

We investigate how cosmic web environment impacts the average properties of central galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We analyse how the average specific star-formation rate, stellar age, metallicity and element abundance ratio [$\alpha$/Fe] of SDSS central galaxies depend on distance from the cosmic web nodes, walls and filaments identified by DisPerSE. In our approach we control for galaxy stellar mass and local density differentiated between field and group environment. Our results confirm the known trend whereby galaxies exhibit lower specific star-formation rates with decreasing distance to the cosmic web features. Furthermore, we show that centrals closer to either nodes, walls or filaments are on average older, metal richer and $\alpha$-enhanced compared to their equal mass counterparts at larger distances. The identified property gradients appear to have the same amplitude for central galaxies in the field as for those in groups. Our findings support a cosmic web quenching that stems from nurture effects, such as ram pressure stripping and strangulation, and/or nature effects linked to the intrinsic properties of the cosmic web., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Printed electronics rely on the deposition of conductive liquid inks, typically onto polymeric or paper substrates. Among available conductive fillers for use in electronic inks, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have high conductivity, low density, processability at low temperatures, and intrinsic mechanical flexibility. However, the electrical conductivity of printed CNT structures has been limited by CNT quality and concentration, and by the need for nonconductive modifiers to make the ink stable and extrudable. This study introduces a polymer-free, printable aqueous CNT ink, and presents the relationships between printing resolution, ink rheology, and ink-substrate interactions. A model is constructed to predict printed feature sizes on impermeable substrates based on Wenzel wetting. Printed lines have conductivity up to 10,000 S/m. The lines are flexible, with < 5% change in DC resistance after 1,000 bending cycles, and <3% change in DC resistance with a bending radius down to 1 mm. Demonstrations focus on (i) conformality, via printing CNTs onto stickers that can be applied to curved surfaces, (ii) interactivity using a CNT-based button printed onto folded paper structure, and (iii) capacitive sensing of liquid wicking into the substrate itself. Charge transport in organic semiconductors is notoriously extremely sensitive to the presence of disorder, both internal and external (i.e. related to the interactions with the dielectric layer), especially for n-type materials. Internal dynamic disorder stems from large thermal fluctuations both in intermolecular transfer integrals and (molecular) site energies in weakly interacting van der Waals solids and sources transient localization of the charge carriers. The molecular vibrations that drive transient localization typically operate at low-frequency (< a-few-hundred cm-1), which renders it difficult to assess them experimentally. Hitherto, this has prevented the identification of clear molecular design rules to control and reduce dynamic disorder. In addition, the disorder can also be external, being controlled by the gate insulator dielectric properties. Here we report on a comprehensive study of charge transport in two closely related n-type molecular organic semiconductors using a combination of temperature-dependent inelastic neutron scattering and photoelectron spectroscopy corroborated by electrical measurements, theory and simulations. Using new, homogeneous, long-slit spectroscopy in the wavelength range from ~0.35 to ~1micron, we study radial gradients of optical and near-infrared (NIR) IMF-sensitive features along the major axis of the bulge of M31, out to a galacto-centric distance of ~200'' (~800pc). Based on state-of-the-art stellar population synthesis models with varying Na abundance ratio, we fit a number of spectral indices, from different chemical species (including TiO's, Ca, and Na indices), to constrain the low-mass (<0.5M_Sun) end slope (i.e. the fraction of low-mass stars) of the stellar IMF, as a function of galacto-centric distance. Outside a radial distance of ~10'', we infer an IMF similar to a Milky-Way-like distribution, while at small galacto-centric distances, an IMF radial gradient is detected, with a mildly bottom-heavy IMF in the few inner arcsec. We are able to fit Na features (both NaD and NaI8190), without requiring extremely high Na abundance ratios. [Na/Fe] is ~0.4dex for most of the bulge, rising up to ~0.6dex in the innermost radial bins. Our results imply an overall, luminosity-weighted, IMF and mass-to-light ratio for the M31 bulge, consistent with those for a Milky-Way-like distribution, in contrast to results obtained, in general, for most massive early-type galaxies., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS, 22 pages, 16 figures

In our companion paper (Brought to Light I: Michea et al. 2021), we reveal spectacular spiral galaxy-like features in deep optical imaging of nine Virgo early-type dwarf galaxies, hidden beneath a dominating smooth stellar disk. Using a new combination of approaches, we find that bar- and spiral-like features contribute 2.2-6.4% of the total flux within 2 R$_{\rm{eff}}$. In this study, we conduct high resolution simulations of cluster harassment of passive dwarf galaxies. Following close pericenter passages of the cluster core, tidal triggering generates features in our model disks that bear a striking resemblance to the observed features. However, we find the disks must be highly rotationally supported (V$_{\rm{peak}}/\sigma_0 \sim 3$), much higher than typically observed. We propose that some early-type dwarfs may contain a few percent of their mass in a cold, thin disk which is buried in the light of a hot, diffuse disk, and only revealed when they undergo tidal triggering. The red optical colors of our sample do not indicate any recent significant star formation, and our simulations show that very plunging pericenter passages (r$_{\rm{peri}}<0.25$r$_{\rm{vir}}$) are required for tidal triggering. Thus, many cluster early-type dwarfs with less plunging orbits may host a yet undetected cold stellar disk component. We discuss possible origin scenarios and consider why similar mass star-forming galaxies in the field are significantly more thin disk dominated than in our cluster sample., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables. Dwarf early-type galaxies (ETGs) display a rich diversity in their photometric, structural, and dynamical properties. In this work, we address their structural complexity by studying with deep imaging a sample of nine dwarf ETGs from the Virgo galaxy cluster, characterized by having faint disk features, such as bars and spiral arms, which lie mostly hidden within the bright diffuse light of the galaxies. We present a new, robust method that aims to identify and extract the disk substructure embedded in these dwarf ETGs. The method consists in an iterative procedure that gradually separates a galaxy image into two components; the bright, dominant diffuse component, and the much fainter, underlying disk component. By applying it to the dwarf ETG sample, we quantify their disk substructure and find that its relative contribution to the total galaxy light ranges between 2.2 to 6.4% within two effective radii. We test the reliability of the method, and prove that it is accurate in recovering the disk substructure we introduce in mock galaxy images, even at low disk-to-total light fractions of a few percent. As a potential application of the method, we perform a Fourier analysis on the extracted disk substructures and measure the orientation, length, and strength of the bars, and the pitch angle and strength of the spiral arms. We also briefly discuss a scenario based on the numerical simulations presented in our companion paper, Brought to Light II: Smith et al. 2021, in which we investigate the origins of the substructure in such dwarf systems., Comment: 31 pages, 15 figures, 6 tables. We propose a stochastic SIR model, specified as a system of stochastic differential equations, to analyse the data of the Italian COVID-19 epidemic, taking also into account the under-detection of infected and recovered individuals in the population. We find that a correct assessment of the amount of under-detection is important to obtain reliable estimates of the critical model parameters. Moreover, a single SIR model over the whole epidemic period is unable to correctly describe the behaviour of the pandemic. Then, the adaptation of the model in every time-interval between relevant government decrees that implement contagion mitigation measures, provides short-term predictions and a continuously updated assessment of the basic reproduction number.

We explore the stellar mass density and colour profiles of 118 low redshift, massive, central galaxies, selected to have assembled 90 percent of their stellar mass 6 Gyr ago, finding evidence of the minor merger activity expected to be the driver behind the size growth of quiescent galaxies. We use imaging data in the $g, r, i, z, y$ bands from the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam survey and perform SED fitting to construct spatially well-resolved radial profiles in colour and stellar mass surface density. Our visual morphological classification reveals that $\sim 42$ percent of our sample displays tidal features, similar to previous studies, $\sim 43$ percent of the remaining sample display a diffuse stellar halo and only $\sim 14$ percent display no features, down to a limiting $\mu_{r\mathrm{-band}}$ $\sim$ 28 mag arcsec$^{-2}$. We find good agreement between the stacked colour profiles of our sample to those derived from previous studies and an expected smooth, declining stellar mass surface density profile in the central regions (< 3 R$_{\mathrm{e}}$). However, we also see a flattening of the profile ($\Sigma_* \sim 10^{7.5}$ M$_\odot$ kpc$^{-2}$) in the outskirts (up to 10 R$_{\mathrm{e}}$), which is revealed by our method of specifically targeting tidal/accretion features. We find similar levels of tidal features and behaviour in the stellar mass surface density profiles in a younger comparison sample, however a lack of diffuse haloes. We also apply stacking techniques, similar to those in previous studies, finding such procedures wash out tidal features and thereby produces smooth declining profiles. The stellar material in the outskirts contributes on average $\sim 10^{10}$ M$_\odot$ or a few percent of the total stellar mass and has similar colours to SDSS satellites of similar stellar mass., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in MNRAS Jan 2023

We study the abundance of satellite galaxies around 198 Milky Way- (MW) and M31-like hosts in TNG50, the final instalment in the IllustrisTNG suite of cosmological magnetohydrodynamical simulations. MW/M31-like analogues are defined as disky galaxies with stellar masses of Mstar = 10^10.5-11.2 Msun in relative isolation at z = 0. By defining satellites as galaxies with Mstar > 5*10^6 Msun within 300 kpc (3D) of their host, we find a remarkable level of diversity and host-to-host scatter across individual host galaxies. The median (16th - 84th percentiles) TNG50 MW/M31-like galaxy hosts a total of 5 (2-11) satellites with Mstar > 5*10^6 Msun, reaching up to Mstar ~ 10^8.5 Msun (10^7.4-9.4 Msun). The abundance of subhaloes with Mdyn > 5*10^7 Msun is larger by a factor of more than 10. The number of all satellites (subhaloes) ever accreted is larger by a factor of 4-5 (3-5) than those surviving to z = 0. Hosts with larger galaxy stellar mass, brighter K-band luminosity, larger total halo mass, and more recent halo assembly typically have a larger number of surviving satellites. The satellite abundances around TNG50 MW/M31-like galaxies are consistent with similar hosts from observational surveys (e.g. SAGA) and previous simulations (e.g. Latte). While the observed MW satellite system falls within the TNG50 scatter across all stellar masses considered, M31 is slightly more satellite-rich than our 1 sigma scatter, possibly due to volume and mass limitations. We find a handful of systems with both a Large and a Small Magellanic Cloud-like satellite. There is no missing satellites problem with TNG50., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS. Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
The neutron-proton equilibration process in 48 Ca+ 40 Ca at 35 MeV/nucleon bombarding energy has been experimentally estimated by means of the isospin transport ratio. Experimental data have been collected with a subset of the FAZIA telescope array, which permitted to determine Z and N of detected fragments. For the first time, the QP evaporative channel has been compared with the QP break-up one in a homogeneous and consistent way, pointing out to a comparable n-p equilibration which suggests close interaction time between projectile and target independently of the exit channel. Moreover, in the QP evaporative channel n-p equilibration has been compared with the prediction of the Antisymmetrized Molecular Dynamics (AMD) model coupled to the GEMINI statistical model as an afterburner, showing a larger probability of proton and neutron transfers in the simulation with respect to the experimental data.
