Abstract: SEE MOLL AND ENGEL DOI101093/AWW308 FOR A SCIENTIFIC COMMENTARY ON THIS ARTICLE: Brain regions dynamically engage and disengage with one another to execute everyday actions from movement to decision making. Pathologies such as Parkinson's disease and tremor emerge when brain regions controlling movement cannot readily decouple, compromising motor function. Here, we propose a novel stimulation strategy that selectively regulates neural synchrony through phase-specific stimulation. We demonstrate for the first time the therapeutic potential of such a stimulation strategy for the treatment of patients with pathological tremor. Symptom suppression is achieved by delivering stimulation to the ventrolateral thalamus, timed according to the patient's tremor rhythm. Sustained locking of deep brain stimulation to a particular phase of tremor afforded clinically significant tremor relief (up to 87% tremor suppression) in selected patients with essential tremor despite delivering less than half the energy of conventional high frequency stimulation. Phase-specific stimulation efficacy depended on the resonant characteristics of the underlying tremor network. Selective regulation of neural synchrony through phase-locked stimulation has the potential to both increase the efficiency of therapy and to minimize stimulation-induced side effects.

Abstract: Full-sky CMB maps from the 2015 Planck release allow us to detect departures from global isotropy on the largest scales. We present the first searches using CMB polarization for correlations induced by a non-trivial topology with a fundamental domain intersecting, or nearly intersecting, the last scattering surface (at comoving distance $\chi_{rec}$). We specialize to flat spaces with toroidal and slab topologies, finding that explicit searches for the latter are sensitive to other topologies with antipodal symmetry. These searches yield no detection of a compact topology at a scale below the diameter of the last scattering surface. The limits on the radius $R_i$ of the largest sphere inscribed in the topological domain (at log-likelihood-ratio $\Delta\ln{L}>-5$ relative to a simply-connected flat Planck best-fit model) are $R_i>0.97\chi_{rec}$ for the cubic torus and $R_i>0.56\chi_{rec}$ for the slab. The limit for the cubic torus from the matched-circles search is numerically equivalent, $R_i>0.97\chi_{rec}$ (99% CL) from polarisation data alone. We also perform a Bayesian search for a Bianchi VII$_h$ geometry. In the non-physical setting where the Bianchi cosmology is decoupled from the standard cosmology, Planck temperature data favour the inclusion of a Bianchi component. However, the cosmological parameters generating this pattern are in strong disagreement with those found from CMB anisotropy data alone. Fitting the induced polarization pattern for this model to Planck data requires an amplitude of $-0.1\pm0.04$ compared to +1 if the model were to be correct. In the physical setting where the Bianchi parameters are fit simultaneously with the standard cosmological parameters, we find no evidence for a Bianchi VII$_h$ cosmology and constrain the vorticity of such models to $(\omega/H)_0<7.6\times10^{-10}$ (95% CL). Abstract: The European Space Agency's Planck satellite, dedicated to studying the early Universe and its subsequent evolution, was launched 14~May 2009 and scanned the microwave and submillimetre sky continuously between 12~August 2009 and 23~October 2013. In February~2015, ESA and the Planck Collaboration released the second set of cosmology products based on data from the entire Planck mission, including both temperature and polarization, along with a set of scientific and technical papers and a web-based explanatory supplement. This paper gives an overview of the main characteristics of the data and the data products in the release, as well as the associated cosmological and astrophysical science results and papers. The science products include maps of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect, and diffuse foregrounds in temperature and polarization, catalogues of compact Galactic and extragalactic sources (including separate catalogues of Sunyaev-Zeldovich clusters and Galactic cold clumps), and extensive simulations of signals and noise used in assessing the performance of the analysis methods and assessment of uncertainties. The likelihood code used to assess cosmological models against the Planck data are described, as well as a CMB lensing likelihood. Scientific results include cosmological parameters deriving from CMB power spectra, gravitational lensing, and cluster counts, as well as constraints on inflation, non-Gaussianity, primordial magnetic fields, dark energy, and modified gravity., Comment: 40 pages, 24 figures

Abstract: Introduction & objectivesAdaptive deep brain stimulation (aDBS) uses feedback from brain signals to guide stimulation. A recent acute trial of unilateral aDBS showed that aDBS can lead to substantial improvements in contralateral hemibody Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) motor scores and may be superior to conventional continuous DBS in Parkinson's disease (PD). We test whether potential benefits are retained with bilateral aDBS and in the face of concurrent medication.MethodsWe applied bilateral aDBS in 4 patients with PD undergoing DBS of the subthalamic nucleus. aDBS was delivered bilaterally with independent triggering of stimulation according to the amplitude of β activity at the corresponding electrode. Mean stimulation voltage was 3.0±0.1 volts. Motor assessments consisted of double-blinded video-taped motor UPDRS scores that included both limb and axial features.ResultsUPDRS scores were 43% (p=0.04; Cohen's d=1.62) better with aDBS than without stimulation. Motor improvement with aDBS occurred despite an average time on stimulation (ToS) of only 45%. Levodopa was well tolerated during aDBS and led to further reductions in ToS.ConclusionBilateral aDBS can improve both axial and limb symptoms and can track the need for stimulation across drug states.

Abstract: Filaments of the cosmic web drive spin acquisition of disc galaxies. The point process of filament-type saddle represent best this environment and can be used to revisit the Tidal Torque Theory in the context of an anisotropic peak (saddle) background split. The constrained misalignment between the tidal tensor and the Hessian of the density field generated in the vicinity of filament saddle points simply explains the corresponding transverse and longitudinal point-reflection symmetric geometry of spin distribution. It predicts in particular an azimuthal orientation of the spins of more massive galaxies and spin alignment with the filament for less massive galaxies. 108. Intrinsic alignment of simulated galaxies in the cosmic web: implications for weak lensing surveys

Abstract: The intrinsic alignment of galaxy shapes (by means of their angular momentum) and their cross-correlation with the surrounding dark matter tidal field are investigated using the 160 000, z=1.2 synthetic galaxies extracted from the high-resolution cosmological hydrodynamical simulation Horizon-AGN. One- and two-point statistics of the spin of the stellar component are measured as a function of mass and colour. For the low-mass galaxies, this spin is locally aligned with the tidal field `filamentary' direction while, for the high-mass galaxies, it is perpendicular to both filaments and walls. The bluest galaxies of our synthetic catalog are more strongly correlated with the surrounding tidal field than the reddest galaxies, and this correlation extends up to 10 Mpc/h comoving distance. We also report a correlation of the projected ellipticities of blue, intermediate mass galaxies on a similar scale at a level of 10^(-4) which could be a concern for cosmic shear measurements. We do not report any measurable intrinsic alignments of the reddest galaxies of our sample. Abstract: Epidemiology, prevention, early management of cervical spine trauma and it's reduction are the objectives of this review paper. A PubMed and MEDLINE search between 2009 and 2019 were conducted using keywords. Case reports, experimental studies, papers other than English language and and unrelated studies were excluded. Up-to-date information on epidemiology of spine trauma, prevention, early emergency management, transportation, and closed reduction were reviewed and statements were produced to reach a consensus in 2 separate consensus meeting of World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS) Spine Committee. The statements were voted and reached a positive or negative consensus using Delphi method. Global incidence of traumatic spinal injury is higher in low- and middle-income countries. The most frequent reasons are road traffic accidents and falls. The incidence from low falls in the elderly are increasing in high-income countries due to ageing populations. Prevention needs legislative, engineering, educational, and social efforts that need common efforts of all society. Emergency care of the trauma patient, transportation, and in-hospital acute management should be planned by implementing detailed protocols to prevent further damage to the spinal cord. This review summarizes the WFNS Spine Committee recommendations on epidemiology, prevention, and early management of cervical spine injuries.

110. Motivation of medical personnel as an important element of personnel management

Abstract: Objective to analyze the structure of motivational attitudes of nurse personnel and their career orientations. Materials and methods.The study was conducted on the basis of three multidisciplinary medical organizations in St. Petersburg. Nurses were asked to complete two questionnaires, including an assessment of motivation and career orientations. The total number of questionnaires processed was 162. The average length of service of the respondents was 10.5 years. According to age, the respondents were distributed as follows: 62.0% were people aged 20-29 years, approximately equal shares were people 30-39years old (18.6%) and 40 years and older (19.4%). The study of the motivation of professional activity was carried out according to the methodology of K. Zamfir (modified by A. Rean). Also, the methodology used to diagnose the value orientations in the career was ''Career Anchors'' (the method of E. Shein in adaptation by V.A. Chiker and V.E. Vinokurov). The questionnaires contain certain points and clues, allowing one to evaluate, respectively, the nature of motivation and preferred orientations. The statistical processing of collected data was performed with the Microsoft Оffice 2016 programs: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel. Results.It was established that in the structure of motivation, 40.2% is an external positive motivation (positive incentives in the organization), 30.1% is an internal motivation (satisfaction with work and its results), 19.7% is an external negative motivation (punishment). The main value orientations in a career are as follows. In the first place the integration of lifestyles (in 73.2% of cases, this orientation scored maximum points); on the second stability of work (62.0%); in the third place ministry (52.4%). The ratio of value orientations varies somewhat among people of different ages. Conclusion.The identified features of motivation and value orientations of nurses should be taken into account both as a whole (to develop a system of motivation in the organization) and personally, taking into account the individual characteristics of each employee. The study of motivation should be carried out by psychologists of medical organizations, and the results should be transmitted to managers to form a reasonable personnel policy.

111. Application of thin layer chromatography for the analytical diagnostics of combined prochlorperazine poisonings

Abstract: The uncontrolled simultaneous application of prochlorperazine with typical phenothiazine derivatives antipsychotics and other drugs leads to fatal poisonings. Aim. To optimize TLC procedures for the screening examinations in combined poisonings with prochlorperazine and other drugs. Results and discussion. The chromatographic mobility of prochlorperazine, clorpromazine, ibuprofen, trifluoperazine and quetiapine has been studied on two types of plates (HPTLC and TLC). It has been shown that the TLC-systems used (special – for prochlorperazine, general – for screening of phenothiazine derivatives, as well as drug and narcotic substances of the basic nature recommended by the International Association of Forensic Toxicologists) rather effectively separate the substances analyzed in a thin layer of a sorbent, except for trifluoperazine. To detect the adsorption zones of substances, the Lieberman reagent giving different staining, the Dragendorff reagent and irradiation of chromatograms by UV-light (λ = 254 nm) have been proposed. The detection sensitivity is 0.5 – 1.0 μg in the sample. The validation assessment of the methods developed has been carried out by the chromatographic analysis of prochlorperazine model mixtures with each of the substances studied. Experimental part. The studies were carried out on HPTLC plates (silica gel 60G, particle size – 5 – 7 μm, substrate type – glass, Estonia) with 10 × 10 cm in size and Merck plates (silica gel 60G F254, particle size – 10 – 15 μm, substrate type – aluminum foil, Germany) with 10 × 10 cm in size. Conclusions. The TLC-conditions for screening of prochlorperazine, chlorpromazine, ibuprofen, trifluoperazin and quetiapine have been determined; they can be recommended for drugs detection in real samples of biological objects in the case of combined poisoning.

Abstract: The integrated cavity absorption meter is designed to measure the seawater absorption coefficient spectra which are necessary for studying ocean productivity and heat balance. The performed numerical simulations of a light field structure made it possible to improve the measurement technique. Its results showed that the use of the Lambertian model allows to reduce the calculation time by two orders of magnitude with an acceptable loss of accuracy for these calculations. It is shown that in the case of an integrating sphere made of fluorilon, the use of different volume scattering functions does not affect the calculation result, which is not true in the case of using a sphere with a mirror coating. The effect of an air layer between quartz and fluorilon is considered, and the applicability of the diffusion approximation is verified. Examples of field measurements of the seawater absorption coefficient and its components performed in different water areas of the World Ocean in 2020–2022 are presented.

Abstract: When someone violates a social norm, others may think that some sanction would be appropriate. We examine how the experience of emotions like anger and disgust relate to the judged appropriateness of sanctions, in a pre-registered analysis of data from a large-scale study in 56 societies. Across the world, we find that individuals who experience anger and disgust over a norm violation are more likely to endorse confrontation, ostracism and, to a smaller extent, gossip. Moreover, we find that the experience of anger is consistently the strongest predictor of judgments of confrontation, compared to other emotions. Although the link between state-based emotions and judgments may seem universal, its strength varies across countries. Aligned with theoretical predictions, this link is stronger in societies, and among individuals, that place higher value on individual autonomy. Thus, autonomy values may increase the role that emotions play in guiding judgments of social sanctions.

Abstract: ObjectivesRest tremor is a cardinal symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD), and is readily suppressed by deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN). The therapeutic effect of the latter on bradykinesia and rigidity has been associated with the suppression of exaggerated beta (13-30 Hz) band synchronization in the vicinity of the stimulating electrode, but there is no correlation between beta suppression and tremor amplitude. In the present study, we investigate whether tremor suppression is related to suppression of activities at other frequencies.Materials and methodsWe recorded hand tremor and contralateral local field potential (LFP) activity from DBS electrodes during stimulation of the STN in 15 hemispheres in 11 patients with PD. DBS was applied with increasing voltages starting at 0.5 V until tremor suppression was achieved or until 4.5 V was reached.ResultsTremor was reduced to 48.9% ± 10.9% of that without DBS once stimulation reached 2.5-3 V (t14 = -4.667, p < 0.001). There was a parallel suppression of low gamma (31-45 Hz) power to 92.5% ± 3% (t14 = -2.348, p = 0.034). This was not seen over a band containing tremor frequencies and their harmonic (4-12 Hz), or over the beta band. Moreover, low gamma power correlated with tremor severity (mean r = 0.43 ± 0.14, p = 0.008) within subjects. This was not the case for LFP power in the other two bands.ConclusionsOur findings support a relationship between low gamma oscillations and PD tremor, and reinforce the principle that the subthalamic LFP is a rich signal that may contain information about the severity of multiple different Parkinsonian features.

Abstract: The kinematic analysis of dark matter and hydrodynamical simulations suggests that the vorticity in large-scale structure is mostly confined to, and predominantly aligned with their filaments, with an excess of probability of 20 per cent to have the angle between vorticity and filaments direction lower than 60 degrees relative to random orientations. The cross sections of these filaments are typically partitioned into four quadrants with opposite vorticity sign, arising from multiple flows, originating from neighbouring walls. The spins of halos embedded within these filaments are consistently aligned with this vorticity for any halo mass, with a stronger alignment for the most massive structures up to an excess of probability of 165 per cent. On large scales, adiabatic/cooling hydrodynamical simulations display the same vorticity in the gas as in the dark matter. The global geometry of the flow within the cosmic web is therefore qualitatively consistent with a spin acquisition for smaller halos induced by this large-scale coherence, as argued in Codis et al. (2012). In effect, secondary anisotropic infall (originating from the vortex-rich filament within which these lower-mass halos form) dominates the angular momentum budget of these halos. The transition mass from alignment to orthogonality is related to the size of a given multi-flow region with a given polarity. This transition may be reconciled with the standard tidal torque theory if the latter is augmented so as to account for the larger scale anisotropic environment of walls and filaments., Comment: 17 pages, 19 figures, 3 tables. accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract: In the context of upcoming large-scale structure surveys such as Euclid, it is of prime importance to quantify the effect of peculiar velocities on geometric probes. Hence the formalism to compute in redshift space the geometrical and topological one-point statistics of mildly non-Gaussian 2D and 3D cosmic fields is developed. Leveraging the partial isotropy of the target statistics, the Gram-Charlier expansion of the joint probability distribution of the field and its derivatives is reformulated in terms of the corresponding anisotropic variables. In particular, the cosmic non-linear evolution of the Minkowski functionals, together with the statistics of extrema are investigated in turn for 3D catalogues and 2D slabs. The amplitude of the non-Gaussian redshift distortion correction is estimated for these geometric probes. In 3D, gravitational perturbation theory is implemented in redshift space to predict the cosmic evolution of all relevant Gram-Charlier coefficients. Applications to the estimation of the cosmic parameters sigma(z) and beta=f/b1 from upcoming surveys is discussed. A schematic diagram of computational studies in the framework of the acoustic design process of propeller-driven fixed-wing aircraft is proposed. A schematic diagram of the choice of a propeller-driven power plant is considered, taking into account the required acoustic characteristics.

Abstract: Planck CMB temperature maps allow detection of large-scale departures from homogeneity and isotropy. We search for topology with a fundamental domain nearly intersecting the last scattering surface (comoving distance $\chi_r$). For most topologies studied the likelihood maximized over orientation shows some preference for multi-connected models just larger than $\chi_r$. This effect is also present in simulated realizations of isotropic maps and we interpret it as the alignment of mild anisotropic correlations with chance features in a single realization; such a feature can also exist, in milder form, when the likelihood is marginalized over orientations. Thus marginalized, the limits on the radius $R_i$ of the largest sphere inscribed in a topological domain (at log-likelihood-ratio -5) are: in a flat Universe, $R_i>0.9\chi_r$ for the cubic torus (cf. $R_i>0.9\chi_r$ at 99% CL for a matched-circles search); $R_i>0.7\chi_r$ for the chimney; $R_i>0.5\chi_r$ for the slab; in a positively curved Universe, $R_i>1.0\chi_r$ for the dodecahedron; $R_i>1.0\chi_r$ for the truncated cube; $R_i>0.9\chi_r$ for the octahedron. Similar limits apply to alternate topologies. We perform a Bayesian search for an anisotropic Bianchi VII$_h$ geometry. In a non-physical setting where the Bianchi parameters are decoupled from cosmology, Planck data favour a Bianchi component with a Bayes factor of at least 1.5 units of log-evidence: a Bianchi pattern is efficient at accounting for some large-scale anomalies in Planck data. However, the cosmological parameters are in strong disagreement with those found from CMB anisotropy data alone. In the physically motivated setting where the Bianchi parameters are fitted simultaneously with standard cosmological parameters, we find no evidence for a Bianchi VII$_h$ cosmology and constrain the vorticity of such models: $(\omega/H)_0<8\times10^{-10}$ (95% CL). Abstract: The two fundamental assumptions of the standard cosmological model - that the initial fluctuations are statistically isotropic and Gaussian - are rigorously tested using maps of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy from the Planck satellite. Deviations from isotropy have been found and demonstrated to be robust against component separation algorithm, mask choice and frequency dependence. Many of these anomalies were previously observed in the WMAP data, and are now confirmed at similar levels of significance (about 3 sigma). However, we find little evidence for non-Gaussianity, with the exception of a few statistical signatures that seem to be associated with specific anomalies. In particular, we find that the quadrupole-octopole alignment is also connected to a low observed variance of the CMB signal. A power asymmetry is now found to persist to scales corresponding to about l=600, and can be described in the low-l regime by a phenomenological dipole modulation model. However, any primordial power asymmetry is strongly scale-dependent and does not extend to arbitrarily small angular scales. Finally, it is plausible that some of these features may be reflected in the angular power spectrum of the data, which shows a deficit of power on similar scales. Indeed, when the power spectra of two hemispheres defined by a preferred direction are considered separately, one shows evidence for a deficit in power, while its opposite contains oscillations between odd and even modes that may be related to the parity violation and phase correlations also detected in the data. Abstract: The ESA's Planck satellite, dedicated to studying the early Universe and its subsequent evolution, was launched 14 May 2009 and has been scanning the microwave and submillimetre sky continuously since 12 August 2009. This paper gives an overview of the mission and its performance, the processing, analysis, and characteristics of the data, the scientific results, and the science data products and papers in the release. The science products include maps of the CMB and diffuse extragalactic foregrounds, a catalogue of compact Galactic and extragalactic sources, and a list of sources detected through the SZ effect. The likelihood code used to assess cosmological models against the Planck data and a lensing likelihood are described. Scientific results include robust support for the standard six-parameter LCDM model of cosmology and improved measurements of its parameters, including a highly significant deviation from scale invariance of the primordial power spectrum. The Planck values for these parameters and others derived from them are significantly different from those previously determined. Several large-scale anomalies in the temperature distribution of the CMB, first detected by WMAP, are confirmed with higher confidence. Planck sets new limits on the number and mass of neutrinos, and has measured gravitational lensing of CMB anisotropies at greater than 25 sigma. Planck finds no evidence for non-Gaussianity in the CMB. Planck's results agree well with results from the measurements of baryon acoustic oscillations. Planck finds a lower Hubble constant than found in some more local measures. Some tension is also present between the amplitude of matter fluctuations derived from CMB data and that derived from SZ data. The Planck and WMAP power spectra are offset from each other by an average level of about 2% around the first acoustic peak.

Abstract: We study Minkowski Functionals as probes of primordial non-Gaussianity in the Cosmic Microwave Background, specifically for the estimate of the primordial `local' bi-spectrum parameter f_NL, with instrumental parameters which should be appropriate for the Planck experiment. We use a maximum likelihood approach, which we couple with various filtering methods and test thoroughly for convergence. We included the effect of inhomogeneous noise as well as astrophysical biases induced by point sources and by the contamination from the Galaxy. We find that, when Wiener filtered maps are used (rather than simply smoothed with Gaussian), the expected error on the measurement of f_NL should be as small as \Delta f_NL \simeq 10 when combining the 3 channels at 100, 143 and 217 GHz in the Planck extended mission setup. This result is fairly insensitive to the non homogeneous nature of the noise, at least for realistic hit-maps expected from Planck. We then estimate the bias induced on the measurement of f_NL by point sources in those 3 channels. With the appropriate masking of the bright sources, this bias can be reduced to a negligible level in the 100 and 143 GHz channels. It remains significant in the 217 GHz channel, but can be corrected for. The galactic foreground biases are quite important and present a complex dependence on sky coverage: making them negligible will depend strongly on the quality of the component separation methods., Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures

139. Connecting the cosmic web to the spin of dark halos: implications for galaxy formation

Abstract: We investigate the alignment of the spin of dark matter halos relative (i) to the surrounding large-scale filamentary structure, and (ii) to the tidal tensor eigenvectors using the Horizon 4pi dark matter simulation which resolves over 43 million dark matter halos at redshift zero. We detect a clear mass transition: the spin of dark matter halos above a critical mass tends to be perpendicular to the closest filament, and aligned with the intermediate axis of the tidal tensor, whereas the spin of low-mass halos is more likely to be aligned with the closest filament. Furthermore, this critical mass of 5 10^12 is redshift-dependent and scales as (1+z)^-2.5. We propose an interpretation of this signal in terms of large-scale cosmic flows. In this picture, most low-mass halos are formed through the winding of flows embedded in misaligned walls; hence they acquire a spin parallel to the axis of the resulting filaments forming at the intersection of these walls. On the other hand, more massive halos are typically the products of later mergers along such filaments, and thus they acquire a spin perpendicular to this direction when their orbital angular momentum is converted into spin. We show that this scenario is consistent with both the measured excess probabilities of alignment w.r.t. the eigen-directions of the tidal tensor, and halo merger histories. On a more qualitative level, it also seems compatible with 3D visualization of the structure of the cosmic web as traced by "smoothed" dark matter simulations or gas tracer particles. 140. Feeding compact bulges and supermassive black holes with low angular-momentum cosmic gas at high redshift

Abstract: We use cosmological hydrodynamical simulations to show that a significant fraction of the gas in high redshift rare massive halos falls nearly radially to their very centre on extremely short timescales. This process results in the formation of very compact bulges with specific angular momentum a factor 5-30$smaller than the average angular momentum of the baryons in the whole halo. Such low angular momentum originates both from segregation and effective cancellation when the gas flows to the centre of the halo along well defined cold filamentary streams. These filaments penetrate deep inside the halo and connect to the bulge from multiple rapidly changing directions. Structures falling in along the filaments (satellite galaxies) or formed by gravitational instabilities triggered by the inflow (star clusters) further reduce the angular momentum of the gas in the bulge. Finally, the fraction of gas radially falling to the centre appears to increase with the mass of the halo; we argue that this is most likely due to an enhanced cancellation of angular momentum in rarer halos which are fed by more isotropically distributed cold streams. Such an increasingly efficient funnelling of low-angular momentum gas to the centre of very massive halos at high redshift may account for the rapid pace at which the most massive supermassive black holes grow to reach observed masses around $10^9$M$_\odot$ at an epoch when the Universe is barely 1 Gyr old., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, MNRAS accepted

Abstract: The formalism to compute the geometrical and topological one-point statistics of mildly non-Gaussian 2D and 3D cosmological fields is developed. Leveraging the isotropy of the target statistics, the Gram-Charlier expansion is reformulated with rotation invariant variables. This formulation allows us to track the geometrical statistics of the cosmic field to all orders. It then allows us to connect the one point statistics of the critical sets to the growth factor through perturbation theory, which predicts the redshift evolution of higher order cumulants. In particular, the cosmic non-linear evolution of the skeleton's length, together with the statistics of extrema and Euler characteristic are investigated in turn. In 2D, the corresponding differential densities are analytic as a function of the excursion set threshold and the shape parameter. In 3D, the Euler characteristics and the field isosurface area are also analytic to all orders in the expansion. Numerical integrations are performed and simple fits are provided whenever closed form expressions are not available. These statistics are compared to estimates from N-body simulations and are shown to match well the cosmic evolution up to root mean square of the density field of ~0.2. In 3D, gravitational perturbation theory is implemented to predict the cosmic evolution of all the relevant Gram-Charlier coefficients for universes with scale invariant matter distribution. Abstract: In the context of the geometrical analysis of weakly non Gaussian CMB maps, the 2D differential extrema counts as functions of the excursion set threshold is derived from the full moments expansion of the joint probability distribution of an isotropic random field, its gradient and invariants of the Hessian. Analytic expressions for these counts are given to second order in the non Gaussian correction, while a Monte Carlo method to compute them to arbitrary order is presented. 143. Statistical Description of Synchrotron Intensity Fluctuations: Studies of Astrophysical Magnetic Turbulence

Abstract: We provide a theoretical description of synchrotron fluctuations arising from magnetic turbulence. We derive an expression that relates the correlation of synchrotron fluctuations for an arbitrary index of relativistic electrons with the correlations of squared fluctuations of magnetic field component perpendicular to the line of sight. The latter correlations we study assuming that the turbulence is axisymmetric. We obtain general relations valid for an arbitrary model of magnetic turbulence and analyse the relations for particular example of magnetic turbulence that is supported by numerical simulations. We predict that the synchrotron intensity fluctuations are anisotropic with larger correlation present along the direction of magnetic field. This anisotropy is dominated by the quadrupole component with the ratio between quadrupole and monopole parts being sensitive to the compressibility of underlying turbulence. Our work opens avenues for quantitative studies of magnetic turbulence in our galaxy and beyond using synchrotron emission. It also outlines the directions of how synchrotron foreground emission can be separated from cosmological signal, i.e. from CMB or highly redshifted HI emission. 144. Rigging dark halos: why is hierarchical galaxy formation consistent with the inside-out build-up of thin discs?

Abstract: State-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulations show that gas inflow through the virial sphere of dark matter halos is focused (i.e. has a preferred inflow direction), consistent (i.e. its orientation is steady in time) and amplified (i.e. the amplitude of its advected specific angular momentum increases with time). We explain this to be a consequence of the dynamics of the cosmic web within the neighbourhood of the halo, which produces steady, angular momentum rich, filamentary inflow of cold gas. On large scales, the dynamics within neighbouring patches drives matter out of the surrounding voids, into walls and filaments before it finally gets accreted onto virialised dark matter halos. As these walls/filaments constitute the boundaries of asymmetric voids, they acquire a net transverse motion, which explains the angular momentum rich nature of the later infall which comes from further away. 145. Superintegrability and higher order constants for classical and quantum systems

Abstract: We extend recent work by Tremblay, Turbiner, and Winternitz which analyzes an infinite family of solvable and integrable quantum systems in the plane, indexed by the positive parameter k. Key components of their analysis were to demonstrate that there are closed orbits in the corresponding classical system if k is rational, and for a number of examples there are generating quantum symmetries that are higher order differential operators than two. Indeed they conjectured that for a general class of potentials of this type, quantum constants of higher order should exist. We give credence to this conjecture by showing that for an even more general class of potentials in classical mechanics, there are higher order constants of the motion as polynomials in the momenta. Abstract: We report on two quantitative, morphological estimators of the filamentary structure of the Cosmic Web, the so-called global and local skeletons. The first, based on a global study of the matter density gradient flow, allows us to study the connectivity between a density peak and its surroundings, with direct relevance to the anisotropic accretion via cold flows on galactic halos. From the second, based on a local constraint equation involving the derivatives of the field, we can derive predictions for powerful statistics, such as the differential length and the relative saddle to extrema counts of the Cosmic web as a function of density threshold (with application to percolation of structures and connectivity), as well as a theoretical framework to study their cosmic evolution through the onset of gravity-induced non-linearities., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures; proceedings of the "Invisible Universe" 2009

Abstract: How did the universe evolve? The fine angular scale (l>1000) temperature and polarization anisotropies in the CMB are a Rosetta stone for understanding the evolution of the universe. Through detailed measurements one may address everything from the physics of the birth of the universe to the history of star formation and the process by which galaxies formed. One may in addition track the evolution of the dark energy and discover the net neutrino mass. We are at the dawn of a new era in which hundreds of square degrees of sky can be mapped with arcminute resolution and sensitivities measured in microKelvin. Acquiring these data requires the use of special purpose telescopes such as the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT), located in Chile, and the South Pole Telescope (SPT). These new telescopes are outfitted with a new generation of custom mm-wave kilo-pixel arrays. 149. Cosmological Fluctuations from Infra-Red Cascading During Inflation

Abstract: We propose a qualitatively new mechanism for generating cosmological fluctuations from inflation. The non-equilibrium excitation of interacting scalar fields often evolves into infra-red (IR) and ultra-violet (UV) cascading, resulting in an intermediate scaling regime. We observe elements of this phenomenon in a simple model with inflaton \phi and iso-inflaton \chi fields interacting during inflation via the coupling g^2 (\phi-\phi_0)^2 \chi^2. Iso-inflaton particles are created during inflation when they become instantaneously massless at \phi=\phi_0, with occupation numbers not exceeding unity. We point out that very quickly the produced \chi particles become heavy and their multiple re-scatterings off the homogeneous condensate \phi(t) generates bremschtrahlung radiation of light inflaton IR fluctuations with high occupation numbers. The subsequent evolution of these IR fluctuations is qualitatively similar to that of the usual inflationary fluctuations, but their initial amplitude is different. The IR cascading generates a bump-shaped contribution to the cosmological curvature fluctuations, which can even dominate over the usual fluctuations for g^2>0.06. The IR cascading curvature fluctuations are significantly non-gaussian and the strength and location of the bump are model-dependent, through g^2 and \phi_0. The effect from IR cascading fluctuations is significantly larger than that from the momentary slowing-down of \phi(t). With a sequence of such bursts of particle production, the superposition of the bumps can lead to a new broad band non-gaussian component of cosmological fluctuations added to the usual fluctuations. 150. Line-of-sight statistical methods for turbulent medium: VCS for emission and absorption lines

Abstract: We present an overview of the Velocity Coordinate Spectrum (VCS), a new technique for studying astrophysical turbulence that utilizes the line-of-sight statistics of Doppler-broadened spectral lines. We consider the retrieval of turbulence spectra from emission intensity observations of both high and low spatial resolution and find that the VCS allows one to study turbulence even when the emitting turbulent volume is not spatially resolved. This opens interesting prospects for using the technique for extragalactic research. VCS developed for spectral emission lines is applicable to absorption lines as well if the optical depth is used instead of intensity. VCS for absorption lines in point-source spectra benefit from effectively narrow beam and does not require dense sky coverage by sampling directions. Even strongly saturated absorption lines still carry the information about the small scale turbulence, albeit limited to the wings of a line. Combining different absorption lines one can develop tomography of the turbulence in the interstellar gas in all its complexity., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures.
