Abstract Background Dourine, a venereal transmitted trypanosomosis caused by Trypanosoma equiperdum, has different clinical signs related to the reproductive and nervous system. Pathologic tissue changes associated with the disease are poorly described. The present study describes the histopathological lesions in naturally T. equiperdum-infected horses in the chronical stage of dourine. Results Four chronically dourine diseased horses underwent a post-mortem examination. They were Woo test negative, but CATT/T. evansi positive, had a low packed cell volume (PCV) and exhibited obvious clinical signs of dourine. Post-mortem examination did not reveal gross lesions in the organs assumed to be responsible for the symptomatology. On histopathology, genital organs were affected, with mononuclear cell infiltration and erosions and degeneration of seminiferous tubules and perivascular lymphoplasmacytic cuffing in the uterus. In the nervous system, mononuclear cell infiltration was located in peripheral nerves, ganglia and in the spinal cord, leading to axonal degeneration. Real-time PCR using ITS primer revealed the presence of trypanosomes in these organs and conventional PCRs using maxicircle and RoTat1.2 primers further confirmed the involvement of T. equiperdum since the DNAs from the vagina, testicle, distal spinal cord, sciatic and obturator nerves found to be positive for maxicircle and negative for RoTat 1.2. Conclusions The histopathological lesions in the spinal cord and peripheral nerves explain the incoordination of the hind legs in T. equiperdum-infected horses, whilst its presence in the genital tract exemplifies the venereal transmission.

The ligand-binding surface of the B cell receptor (BCR) is formed by encoded and non-encoded antigen complementarity determining regions (CDRs). Genetically reproducible or ‘public’ antibodies can arise when the encoded CDRs play deterministic roles in antigen recognition, notably within human broadly neutralizing antibodies against HIV and influenza virus. We sought to exploit this by engineering virus-like-particle (VLP) vaccines that harbor multivalent affinity against gene-encoded moieties of the BCR antigen binding site. As proof of concept, we deployed a library of RNA bacteriophage VLPs displaying random peptides to identify a multivalent antigen that selectively triggered germline BCRs using the human VH gene IGVH1-2*02. This VLP selectively primed IGHV1-2*02 BCRs that were present within a highly diversified germline antibody repertoire within humanized mice. Our approach thus provides methodology to generate antigens that engage specific BCR configurations of interest, in the absence of structure-based information.

Beyond their pulmonary disease, many COVID-19 patients experience a complex constellation of characteristics, including hyperinflammatory responses, autoimmune disorders, and coagulopathies. However, the pathogenesis of these aspects of COVID-19 is obscure. More than 90% of people are latently infected with the lymphotropic herpesviruses Epstein–Barr Virus (EBV) and/or Human Herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6). Some of the inflammatory features of COVID-19 resemble clinical syndromes seen during EBV and HHV-6 infection, and these latent viruses can be reactivated by inflammatory mediators. We hypothesized that EBV and HHV-6 reactivation might be a common feature of early COVID-19, particularly in patients with more inflammation. We tested for EBV and HHV-6 reactivation in 67 patients acutely hospitalized with COVID-19 using previously validated quantitative PCR assays on the plasma. In our cohort, we found that 15/67 (22.4%) patients had detectable EBV and 3/67 (4.5%) had detectable HHV-6. This frequency of activation is somewhat more than the frequency reported for some healthy cohorts, such as blood donors and other healthy control cohorts. There was no association between EBV or HHV-6 and markers indicative of more inflammatory disease. We conclude that EBV and HHV-6 activation at about day 7 of hospitalization occurred in a modest fraction of our cohort of COVID-19 patients and was not associated with high levels of inflammation. In the modest fraction of patients, EBV and HHV-6 reactivation could contribute to some features of acute disease and pre-disposition to post-acute sequelae in a subset of patients.

The knowledge of the physicochemical properties of honey from different botanical and geographical origins is important to identify the honey with better quality. Accordingly, the Amhara region of Ethiopia is producing honey of different quality for the local and export market. Thus, the study was aimed at estimating the quality and developing a chemometric model for geographical origin classification of the region’s honey based on its physicochemical parameters. A total of 47 honey samples were collected from 7 administrative zones (East Gojjam, West Gojjam, Awi, South Gondar, South Wollo, North Wollo and Wag Himera zones) of three major provinces (Gojjam, Gondar and Wollo) of the region. Eight physicochemical parameters of the honey samples were determined using internationally accepted standard methods. In view of that, the average values of the studied physicochemical parameters at each administrative zone were in the range of 16.06–18.51, 0.26–0.60, 61.45–71.41 and 2.96–4.73 g/100 g of honey for moisture content, ash content, total reducing sugar and apparent sucrose content respectively. In addition, pH (3.85–4.23), free acidity (26.39–37.80 meq/kg), electrical conductivity (33.37–63.43 μS/cm) and HMF (3.88–8.50 mg/kg) were determined in the studied samples. Based on these values the region’s honey was in a good quality that meets the national and international standard limits. In the PCA model, the first three principal components explained about 69.14% of the total variations and the LDA model had an average of 80.85% discrimination power. The LDA model was checked by cross-validation method and 100% of samples in the validation set were correctly classified by the model.

INTRODUCTION: Incidence of adverse drug reactions (ADR) associated with antiretroviral therapy (ART) was higher in developing countries. In two teaching hospital in Ethiopia: Debremarkose 23% and Yirgalem 73.2% of study participants reported at least one ADR. Since there was limited information about ADR in the study area; we aimed to determine its incidence-rate and predictors. METHODS: we conducted retrospective cohort study using medical records of HIV-infected patients enrolled on ART between 2006 and 2017 in government hospitals of Ethiopia. ADR was defined as report of at least one unwanted response to ART. We run descriptive and cox regression analysis (CRA). RESULTS: incidence-rate of ADR was 4.1 per 100 person-years (py). Hazards of ADR among patients living at rural was almost two times than at urban; [Adjusted hazard ratio (AHR): 1.94(95%(CI):1.18, 3.20)]. Stavudine (D4T)-Lamivudine(3TC)-Nevirapine(NVP) had about two times [AHR: 1.78(95%CI:1.03, 3.08)], Zidovudine (AZT)-3TC-NVP had about two times [AHR: 2.34(95%CI: 1.20, 4.57)], D4T-3TC-Efaviranze (EFV) had about three times [AHR: 2.86 (95%CI: 1.38, 5.95)] and AZT-3TC-EFV had about two times [AHR: 2.16(95%CI: 1.21,3.90)] hazards of ADR than Tenofovir(TDF) based regimens. Being WHO clinical stage III had about two times hazard of ADR [AHR: 2.46 (95%CI: 1.22, 4.95)] and IV had about four times hazard of ADR [AHR: 4.32 (95%CI: 1.88, 9.93)] than stage I. CONCLUSION: risk of ADR was higher among adult HIV-infected patients on ART living in rural, WHO clinical stage III and IV, and patients on AZT and D4T based regimen. AZT should not be given as an alternative treatment, increase access of TDF regimens.

BackgroundMaternal health services are affected by complex factors from one setting to another. Consequently, health planners should prioritize different interventions and design appropriate programs to enhance maternal health services utilization. Results of prior studies are conflicting. Furthermore, only few studies were done from antenatal to postnatal continuum of care in Ethiopia.ObjectivesThis study aimed to assess prevalence and predictors of skilled maternal health services utilization at Dale-Wonsho health and demographic surveillance site of the Hawassa University, South Ethiopia, in 2019.MethodsA community based cross sectional study was conducted from January 1-30; 2019. A total of 682 women who gave birth in the last twelve months were selected by using a two stage sampling technique. Data were collected through face to face interview. Data were entered into Epidata version 3.1. Then, they were exported and analyzed by SPSS version 22. Bi-variable logistic regression analysis was done and variables with p-value less than 0.05 were considered as candidate for multivariable logistic regression analysis. Adjusted Odds Ratios (AOR) with 95% CI were computed, and p-value less than 0.01 was computed to determine the level of significance.ResultPrevalence of antenatal care, institutional delivery and postnatal care utilizations were 69.1%, 52.1% and 32.7% respectively. Educated women (AOR = 4.72, 95%CI,2.82,7.9), household training (AOR = 8.52,95%CI = 5.5,13.1), middle wealth quantile(AOR = 0.8,95%CI,0.4-0.7), being richest wealth quantile (AOR = 0.16;95%CI = 0.06,0.41) and pregnancy plan (AOR = 3.65,95%CI,1.67-8.0) were factors positively associated with antenatal care utilization. Husband education (AOR = 4.96,95CI,3.08-8.0), and antenatal care (AOR = 5.9; 95%CI,3.87,9.1) were factors associated with institutional delivery. Maternal education (AOR = 2.5,95CI,1.4-4.4), information about postnatal care service utilization (AOR = 3.6,95CI,2.1,6.2) and women autonomy(AOR = 6.1,95CI,3.8,9.7) were positively associated with postnatal care service.ConclusionPrevalence of antenatal care, institutional delivery and postnatal care services were lower than the targeted plan. Policy makers should focus on capacity building of women both economically and academically. So, women should be more autonomous to utilize health services effectively. Moreover, awareness creation among women should be enhanced about maternal health service.

IntroductionCOVID-19 incidence is increasing and different measures have been adopted to control the spread of the pandemic in Ethiopia. Among these measures, enhancing the knowledge, positive attitudes, and proper practices of prevention measures about the disease is a basic strategy to control it. However, community compliance to control measures is largely dependent on their knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) towards COVID-19.ObjectiveTo assess the current level of KAP towards COVID-19 pandemic and predictors among the rural dwellers in Sidama regional state, Southern Ethiopia; 2020.MethodsThis community-based prospective cross-sectional study was carried out from May 1-30, 2020 on a sample of 1,278 adult populations in Sidama regional state, Southern Ethiopia. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to choice the study participants. The data were collected using a structured interviewer-administered questionnaire. We have entered data using Epi data version 3.1 and all analyses were done using SPSS version 25. KAPs scores of study participants based on their independent variables were compared using Chi-square test, t-test or one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) as required. Bi-variable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to identify factors associated with KAP. The important assumptions of the logistic regression model were checked to be satisfied. Adjusted odds ratios (AOR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated to assess the existence and strength of associations.ResultsFrom a total of 1,214 study participants, the overall attained knowledge, attitude and practice score about COVID-19 were 90%, 82.4% and 65%, respectively. Among these, 43.9%, 37.5%, and 24.4% of the study participants had demonstrated good knowledge, high attitude and proper practice, respectively. The mean knowledge scores were significantly different between sex, categories of marital status, educational levels, main occupation, and the monthly income quintiles of the study participants (pConclusionsThe majority of study participants had showed good knowledge and optimistic attitude toward COVID-19. But, the level of practice lower than that expected to maximize effective control measures. Further public education interventions and community sensitization campaigns are required for rural adult population in the Sidama regional state, Ethiopia.

Tandem conjugate addition–alkylation reaction of various amines with α-bromo-α, β-unsaturated ketones resulted in near-quantitative conversions into the corresponding aziridines when the reaction was carried out in the presence of 10 mol% of phase-transfer, PT catalysts in water. Some chiral quaternary ammonium salts derived from Cinchona alkaloids were investigated as water-stable PT catalysts. The scope and limitations of the reaction have also been investigated. The catalytic performances were significantly improved in comparison with the corresponding ordinary quaternary ammonium salt catalysts, and excellent yields (81%–96%) were obtained. Although an increase in the rate of aziridination has been accomplished, no stereoselectivity was observed. The positive values of the protocol have been confirmed.

Abstract Understanding population genetic structure and diversity of a crop is essential in designing selection strategies in plant breeding. About 2010 Ethiopian sorghum accessions were phenotyped for different traits at multiple locations. A subset of the collection, 1628 accessions, predominantly landraces, some improved varieties, and inbred lines were genotyped by sequencing. Phenotypic data revealed association of important traits with different sorghum growing agro‐climatic regions, high genetic diversity and the presence of rare natural variation in the Ethiopian sorghum germplasm. Subsequent genotypic analysis determined optimum number of sub‐populations, distinct cluster groups and ancestries of each sorghum accessions. To improve utilization of germplasm, a core subset of 387 lines were selected following posteriori grouping of genotypes based on cluster groups obtained through GBS analysis followed by stratified random sampling using quantitative traits. In order to evaluate how well this new sorghum and millet innovation lab (SMIL) collection from Ethiopia is represented within the largest world sorghum collection at United States Department of Agriculture ‐ National Plant Germplasm System (USDA‐NPGS) and the sorghum association panel (SAP), comparisons were conducted based on SNP data. The SMIL collection displayed high genetic diversity with some redundancy with the USDA‐NPGS germplasm but SAP showed clear distinction. Furthermore, genome‐environment association analysis identified candidate genes associated with adaptation to abiotic factors, that will be important for exploitation of adaptive potential to different environments. In summary, our results described the diversity and relationship of sorghum collections, representativeness of developed core and provide novel insights into candidate genes associated to abiotic stress tolerance.

Abstract Background By 2030, the Sub-Saharan African region is projected to be the epicenter of the tobacco epidemic. While smoking prevalence is currently low among women ( 94%); however, specific knowledge of associated health-risks was limited. More than 96% perceived female tobacco use as socially unacceptable. At the same time, more than 70% were able to name potential benefits of using tobacco for both personal consumption and non-personal use. Respondents reported greater experimentation with khat versus tobacco and 73% reported that their religion significantly influenced their tobacco-related attitudes. Overall, there were higher reports of exposure to anti-tobacco (70%) versus pro-tobacco (49%) messaging, in the last 30 days. Conclusions The high level of awareness of health risks associated with tobacco use and SHS exposure and the high exposure to anti-tobacco messaging are community-level strengths that can proactively be built on to prevent the projected disease burden associated with tobacco. Findings have implications for the development of contextualized gender-specific tobacco control interventions, particularly in relation to the promotion of smoke-free homes.

Abstract Background Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are typically expressed at low levels and are inherently highly variable. This is a fundamental challenge for differential expression (DE) analysis. In this study, the performance of 25 pipelines for testing DE in RNA-seq data is comprehensively evaluated, with a particular focus on lncRNAs and low-abundance mRNAs. Fifteen performance metrics are used to evaluate DE tools and normalization methods using simulations and analyses of six diverse RNA-seq datasets. Results Gene expression data are simulated using non-parametric procedures in such a way that realistic levels of expression and variability are preserved in the simulated data. Throughout the assessment, results for mRNA and lncRNA were tracked separately. All the pipelines exhibit inferior performance for lncRNAs compared to mRNAs across all simulated scenarios and benchmark RNA-seq datasets. The substandard performance of DE tools for lncRNAs applies also to low-abundance mRNAs. No single tool uniformly outperformed the others. Variability, number of samples, and fraction of DE genes markedly influenced DE tool performance. Conclusions Overall, linear modeling with empirical Bayes moderation (limma) and a non-parametric approach (SAMSeq) showed good control of the false discovery rate and reasonable sensitivity. Of note, for achieving a sensitivity of at least 50%, more than 80 samples are required when studying expression levels in realistic settings such as in clinical cancer research. About half of the methods showed a substantial excess of false discoveries, making these methods unreliable for DE analysis and jeopardizing reproducible science. The detailed results of our study can be consulted through a user-friendly web application, giving guidance on selection of the optimal DE tool (http://statapps.ugent.be/tools/AppDGE/).

BackgroundSoil-transmitted helminths (STH) remain one of the most common causes of morbidity among children in Ethiopia. Assessment of the magnitude of STH and its association with water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) and identify barriers for school-level prevention assist public health planners to prioritize promotion strategies and is a basic step for intervention. However, there is a lack of evidence on the prevalence of STH and its association with WASH and barriers for school-level prevention among schoolchildren.ObjectiveTo assess the prevalence of STH and its association with WASH and identify barriers for school level prevention in technology village of Hawassa University; 2019.MethodsAn institution-based analytical cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of 1080 schoolchildren from September 5 to October 15, 2019. A two-stage cluster and purposive sampling technique were used to draw the study participants. A pretested, structured questionnaire, observation checklist, and in-depth interview were used to collect the data. Two grams of stool samples were collected from each study participant and examined using direct wet mount and Kato-Katz technique. Data were entered into Epi Info version 7 and analyzed using SPSS version 25. Both bi-variable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were done. Qualitative data were analyzed using thematic content analysis method by Atlas-Ti software and presented in narratives.ResultsThe overall prevalence of STHs was 23.1% (95% CI = 21.4, 27.6). The identified predictors of STHs were large family size (AOR = 2.03; 95% CI = 1.53-3.99), absence of separate toilet room for male and female (AOR = 3.33; 95% CI = 1.91-5.79), toilet not easy to clean (AOR = 2.17; 95% CI = 1.44-3.33), inadequate knowledge about STHs (AOR = 2.08; 95% CI = 1.07-3.44) and children who had travelled greater than 100 meters to access toilet (AOR = 3.45; 95% CI = 2.24-8.92). These results were supported by the individual, institutional, socio-economic and cultural qualitative results.ConclusionThe STHs was moderate public health concerns. Reinforcing the existing fragile water, sanitation and hygiene programs and regular deworming of schoolchildren may support to reduce the burden of STHs. Also, increasing modern family planning methods utilization to decrease family size is recommended.

Background. Regular utilization of maternal health care services decreases maternal morbidity and mortality. However, major predictors that influence the utilization of the existing maternal health care services are complex and differ from place to place. Therefore, assessing these predictors assists health planners to prioritize promotion strategies and is a fundamental step for intervention. This study assessed the utilization and predictors of maternal health care services among women of the reproductive age in Hawassa Health and Demographic Surveillance System site, South Ethiopia, 2019. Methods. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 682 women of the reproductive age from January to February, in 2019. A two-stage stratified sampling method was utilized. Data were collected using a structured, face-to-face interviewer-administered questionnaire. The data were entered using Epi Data 3.1 and analyzed using SPSS version 20. The variables were entered into the multivariable model using the backward stepwise regression approach. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with utilization of the maternal health care. Adjusted odds ratios (AORs) with 95% confidence interval (CI) were computed to assess the presence and strength of associations. Result. The overall utilization of ANC, institutional delivery, and PNC was 69.1, 52.1, and 32.7%, respectively. The odds of utilizing ANC were 4.72 times higher for women who have a formal education (AOR: 4.72, 95% CI = 2.82–7.90) as compared to those who have no formal education. The odds of utilizing institutional delivery were 5.96 times higher for women who had ANC follow-up (AOR: 5.96; 95% CI = 3.88–9.18) as compared to those who had no ANC follow-up. Presence of information about the PNC (AOR: 3.66; 95% CI = 2.18–6.14) and autonomy of a woman to make decision on health issues (AOR: 6.13, 95% CI = 3.86–9.73) were positively associated with utilization of PNC. Conclusion. The utilization of maternal health care services is far below the national target in the study area. Maternal and paternal education status, autonomy of the woman to make decision on the health issues, wealth status, and having a plan on the current pregnancy were major predictors of the maternal health care service utilization. Providing information and training about the model household to the women about maternal health care service utilization using various methods of health education should be considered.

The eastern Africa region, Ethiopia and its surroundings, is considered as the center of origin and diversity for sorghum, and has contributed to global sorghum genetic improvement. The germplasm from this region harbors enormous genetic variation for various traits but little is known regarding the genetic architecture of most traits. Here, 1425 Ethiopian landrace accessions were phenotyped under field conditions for presence or absence of awns, panicle compactness and shape, panicle exsertion, pericarp color, glume cover, plant height and smut resistance under diverse environmental conditions in Ethiopia. In addition, F1 hybrids obtained from a subset of 1341 accessions crossed to an A1 cytoplasmic male sterile line, ATx623, were scored for fertility/sterility reactions. Subsequently, genotyping-by-sequencing generated a total of 879,407 SNPs from which 72,190 robust SNP markers were selected after stringent quality control (QC). Pairwise distance-based hierarchical clustering identified 11 distinct groups. Of the genotypes assigned to either one of the 11 sub-populations, 65% had high ancestry membership coefficient with the likelihood of more than 0.60 and the remaining 35% represented highly admixed accessions. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) identified loci and SNPs associated with aforementioned traits. GWAS based on compressed mixed linear model (CMLM) identified SNPs with significant association (FDR ≤ 0.05) to the different traits studied. The percentage of total phenotypic variation explained with significant SNPs across traits ranged from 2 to 43%. Candidate genes showing significant association with different traits were identified. The sorghum bHLH transcription factor, ABORTED MICROSPORES was identified as a strong candidate gene conditioning male fertility. Notably, sorghum CLAVATA1 receptor like kinase, known for regulation of plant growth, and the ETHYLENE RESPONSIVE TRANSCRIPTION FACTOR gene RAP2-7, known to suppress transition to flowering, were significantly associated with plant height. In addition, the YELLOW SEED1 like MYB transcription factor and TANNIN1 showed strong association with pericarp color validating previous observations. Overall, the genetic architecture of natural variation representing the complex Ethiopian sorghum germplasm was established. The study contributes to the characterization of genes and alleles controlling agronomic traits, and will serve as a source of markers for molecular breeding.

Abstract Background In Ethiopia, female smoking rates are currently low (1 %). However, because of male smoking rates (overall 7.7 % and up to 27 % depending on region), women and children’s risk of second hand smoke (SHS) exposure is a pressing concern. In order to develop effective public health interventions that prevent the uptake and exposure to smoking, thereby averting the projected increase in tobacco-induced disease, an understanding of Ethiopian women’s practices regarding tobacco is needed. The purpose of this study was to explore Ethiopian women’s tobacco use and prevalence of SHS exposure, and to identify covariates associated with SHS exposure. Methods We conducted an exploratory cross-sectional study in Southern Ethiopia between August and October 2014, and systematically sampled households in Aleta Wondo town and surrounding districts. Trained interviewers verbally administered surveys to women 18–55 years of age. Descriptive statistics and multiple logistic regression analyses were performed. Results None of the 353 participants reported current tobacco use and less than 1 % reported ever use, however, 11 % reported ever use of the stimulant leaf khat. Twenty-seven women (7.6 %) reported living with a tobacco user, however, twice that number (14.4 %) overall, and 22 % of urban participants reported that smoking occurred daily in their home. When controlling for other factors, living with a tobacco user (OR = 9.91, 95 % CI [3.32, 29.59]), allowing smoking in the home (OR = 5.67, 95 % CI [2.51, 12.79]), place of residence (OR = 2.74, 95 % CI [1.11, 6.74)]), and exposure to point-of-sale advertising within the last 30 days (OR = 2.87, 95 % CI [1.26, 6.54]) contributed significantly to a model predicting the likelihood of reporting daily occurrence of smoking/SHS in the home. Conclusions While few women reported having ever used tobacco, one in seven women in this study reported that smoking/SHS occurred daily in their homes. Therefore SHS exposure is a potential health concern for women and children in this rural community. Findings from this study provide baseline data for monitoring tobacco control policies in Ethiopia, particularly in relation to the promotion of smoke-free homes, and could be used to inform prevention program development.

Broadly neutralizing antibodies (bnAbs) isolated from HIV-infected individuals delineate vulnerable sites on the HIV envelope glycoprotein that are potential vaccine targets. A linear epitope within the N-terminal region of the HIV-1 fusion peptide (FP8) is the primary target of VRC34.01, a bnAb that neutralizes ~50% of primary HIV isolates. FP8 has attracted attention as a potential HIV vaccine target because it is a simple linear epitope. Here, platform technologies based on RNA bacteriophage virus-like particles (VLPs) were used to develop multivalent vaccines targeting the FP8 epitope. Both recombinant MS2 VLPs displaying the FP8 peptide and Qβ VLPs displaying chemically conjugated FP8 peptide induced high titers of FP8-specific antibodies in mice. Moreover, a heterologous prime-boost-boost regimen employing the two FP8-VLP vaccines and native envelope trimer was the most effective approach for eliciting HIV-1 neutralizing antibodies. Given the potent immunogenicity of VLP-based vaccines, this vaccination strategy—inspired by bnAb-guided epitope mapping, VLP bioengineering, and prime-boost immunization approaches—may be a useful strategy for eliciting bnAb responses against HIV.

Background: From Africa, our knowledge on how malnutrition and diseases influence the ability to work is limited. In a one-year population-based study, we investigated the effects of nutritional status, illness and socioeconomic factors on the activity pattern in a rural population in southern Ethiopia.Methods: From July 1991 to June 1992, 226 people (109 men and 117 women) from the Elka na Mataramofa village in the Rift Valley were examined every 3 months. Information on the occurrence of illness and measurement of nutritional status were collected every 3 months. At the same time we interviewed each person for seven consecutive days to assess the pattern of activities.Results: Men and women had a mean estimated energy expenditure (SD) of 2937 kcal (951) and 1977 (513) kcal, respectively. The mean body mass index (BMI) (SD) was 19.7 (2.3) for men and 20.0 (2.6) for women. Men showed a significant seasonal variation in estimated energy expenditure that was highest during the pre-harvest time. Women did not show such a seasonal variation. In a multivariate analysis, sex, age, state of nutrition, period prevalence and severity of diseases and seasonality influenced estimated energy expenditures.Conclusions: Both low BMI and illness are significantly associated with low estimated energy expenditure. Most likely, this represents an example of the vicious circle of malnutrition, disease and activity that affects subsistence farming communities. Background. Compared to average maternal mortality ratio of 8 per 100,000 live births in industrialized countries, Ethiopia has an estimated maternal mortality ratio of 676 per 100,000 live births. Maternal deaths can be prevented partially through increasing awareness of danger signs of obstetric complications and involving husbands (male) in birth preparedness practice. Methods. Community based cross-sectional study was done. All adult males with a wife or partner who lives in the selected kebeles were our study population. Data was collected by pretested and structured questionnaires and two-stage cluster sampling procedure was used in order to collect study samples. Data was cleaned and entered into Epi Info 7 and exported to SPSS (IBM-21) for further analysis. Ordinary and hierarchical logistic regression model were used and AOR with 95% CI were used to show factors and the effect of men’s awareness of danger sign on men’s involvement in birth preparedness practice. Results. Total numbers of men interviewed were 836 making a response rate of 98.9%. 42% of men had awareness of danger sign and 9.4% (95% CI: (7.42, 11.4) of men were involved in birth preparedness practice. Respondents who live in the rural area [(AOR: 8.41; (95% CI: (4.99, 14.2)], governments employee [(AOR: 3.75; (95% CI: (1.38, 10.2)], those who belong to the highest wealth quintile [(AOR: 3.09; (95% CI: (1.51, 6.34)], and husbands whose wives gave birth in the hospital [(AOR: 2.09; (95% CI: (1.29, 3.37)], health center [(AOR: 1.99; (95% CI: (1.21, 3.28)], and health post [(AOR: 2.2; (95% CI: 2.16 (1.06, 404)] were positively associated and those who had no role in the health development army [(AOR: 0.43; (95% CI: (0.26, 0.72)] were negatively associated with men’s awareness of danger signs of obstetric complications. Conclusion. The prevalence of men awareness of danger sign was low and male involvement in birth preparedness practice was very low. Since there is a low level of awareness (17.1%) particularly in the urban area and men act as gatekeepers to women’s health, the respective organization needs to review urban health extension program and give due emphasis to husband education in order that they are able to recognize danger signs of obstetric complications in a way to increase their involvement in birth preparedness practice.

Introduction: A widely recognized public health issue affecting people worldwide is central obesity. Numerous chronic conditions, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, and malignancies are linked to this syndrome. There is limited information about waist circumference (WC) and its related variables among urban bank workers in Ethiopia. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate waist circumference and the factors associated with it among bank workers in Northeast Ethiopia., Methods: An institution-based cross-sectional study was carried out in Dessie, Northeast Ethiopia, between 2 October 2023 and 24 October 2023. A random selection method was employed to select 363 bank workers. STATA version 17 was used for analysis after the data were imported into EpiData version 4.4.2.0. Univariate and multivariate linear regression analyzes were performed to identify factors related to waist circumference. Normality, homoscedasticity, significant outliers, and multicollinearity were assessed, and a p -value of less than 0.05, along with a 95% confidence interval, was considered statistically significant., Results: A total of 345 participants were included in the final analysis, with a 95% response rate. The overall mean ± standard deviation (SD) of the waist circumference of the employees was 81.7 ± 6.8 cm, with 82.4 ± 6.5 cm for men and 80.7 ± 7.2 cm for women. The overall prevalence of central obesity was 57.7%, with 48.2% for the men and 70.3% for the women. The overall mean ± SD of the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) was 0.90 ± 0.05, with 0.91 ± 0.04 for men and 0.89 ± 0.05 for women. The average waist circumference was significantly associated with the participants' age (0.2 cm per year (SE: 0.1)) and MET hours (0.2 cm (SE: 0.1)). The mean waist circumference was 2.7 cm (SE:0.8) higher in the married women, 4.6 cm (SE:1.9) higher in the participants with non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and 1.7 cm (SE:0.8) higher in the participants who consumed discretionary calories for 4 days/week., Conclusion: The mean waist circumference among bank employees was higher, with more than half of the participants having central obesity. Age, marital status, discretionary calorie intake, non-communicable diseases, and metabolic equivalence task hours were the significant factors of waist circumference. Background: Globally, in ~50% of epilepsy cases, the underlying cause remains unknown, despite the fact that various disease pathways may contribute to the condition. Nearly 80% of people with epilepsy live in low- and middle-income countries and the risk of premature death in people with epilepsy is up to three times higher than that for the general population. Identifying the determinants of epilepsy is important for applying evidence-based interventions to achieve a better outcome. However, this information is scarce in a country with limited resources like Ethiopia., Objective: This study aimed to assess the determinant of epilepsy among outpatients in Dawo public health institutions, from 29 February to 15 April 2023., Method: An institution-based unmatched case-control study design was used, involving 61 cases and 122 control study subjects, who were selected using a consecutive sampling technique from public health institutions in Dawo. Data were collected using a pre-tested structured questionnaire. The data were coded, entered into EpiDATA version 3.1, and exported to SPSS version 20, for further analysis. Descriptive analysis was used to determine the percentages and frequency distributions. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify the determinants of epilepsy, and a variable with p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant., Results: A total of 61 cases and 120 controls were included in the study, with an overall response rate of 98.90%. The majority of participants, 38 (62.3) of the cases and 63 (52.5) of the controls, were farmers by occupation. A family history of epilepsy (AOR = 13.71 95% CI 3.030-22.006), history of febrile seizure (AOR = 14.57 95% CI 2.930-24.522), history of head injury (AOR = 6.853 95% CI 1.780-16.402), and non-use of latrine were found to be determinants of epilepsy (AOR = 0.028 95% CI 0.008-0.040)., Conclusion and Recommendations: The current study identified a family history of epilepsy, a history of febrile seizures, head injury, and unavailability of latrines as independent predictors of epilepsy in the study area. The information that adverse febrile seizures increase the risk of epilepsy suggests that a significant proportion of epilepsy cases in Dawo district could be prevented through improved maternal, neonatal, and child care. Background and Aims: Access to eye health care, which has a substantial influence on quality of life, is crucial for preventing and treating vision impairments. The determinants of access to eye health care in Ethiopia, especially in the Gamo and Gofa Zones in southern Ethiopia, are not well known. Therefore, this study aimed to identify barriers to accessing eye health services at the community level., Methods: A community-based, exploratory descriptive qualitative study was conducted among adult women and men residing in two zones from June 2 to July 10, 2023. A purposive sampling technique was utilized to collect qualitative data. In-depth interviews and FGDs were included among the purposefully selected study participants. During the interviews and discussions, digital audio recording was carried out. The data were analysed via the inductive thematic analysis technique and direct quotations from participants' opinions. The respective themes and subthemes provided a detailed overview of the findings, and the Atlas software was used to support the analysis., Findings: Nine FGDs were conducted among 90 participants. Moreover, a total of 26 in-depth interview participants were included. The mean (±SD) age of the participants in the in-depth interviews was 32.96 ± 4.8 years. The most commonly cited barriers (1) poor awareness and misperception, financial constraints and community-based health insurance implementation gaps; (2) lack of social support; (3) lack of healthcare accessibility, shortage of basic medical equipment; (4) cultural eye care practices and (5) poor road access, rough topography, and difficulty reaching areas, which are identified as obstacles for accessing eye health services., Conclusion: This study identified pertinent barriers that hinder access to eye health care in the study area. Therefore, tailored strategies are needed to tackle the challenges. This study aimed to determine the levels of some heavy metals in the Koche River and the potential health risks. A replica of water samples was taken from 12 sampling sites purposely selected in the dry season. Heavy metal levels were determined using a flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer following the APHA (1998) procedure. Heavy metal pollution index (HPI), heavy metal evaluation index (HEI), chronic daily intake (CDI), hazard quotient (HQ), hazard index (HI), total hazard index (THI), and incremental lifetime cancer risk were calculated on the basis of the results. The heavy metals detected were Fe > Mn > Cu > Zn > Cr. The Cr, Fe, Mn, and Cu contents were above the maximum allowed limit of WHO for drinking and irrigation water at most of the sampling sites. The HPI and HEI values also surpassed the maximum limit of the study sites. The highest HPI and HEI values were found at the Yam1site. Oral ingestion represented 99.55% and 97.85% of CDI total (CDI ingestion  + CDI dermal contact) in adults and children, respectively. The mean CDI total and the noncarcinogenic risk values were found in the order of Fe > Mn > Cu > Zn > Cr in both ages. CDI, HQ, HI, and THI scores were higher in children. The HI oral and THI values were also higher than 1 in both ages except in DK 2, Sour 1, and Sour 2 sites. However, the HQ dermal level was higher than 1 only for Cr in children. The ELCR obtained also indicated a high carcinogenic risk of Cr (0.75 ± 0.44 and 1.15 ± 0.66 in adults and children, respectively). In general, most of the study sites had heavy metal pollution levels that exceeded the maximum allowed limit. Background: Blindness and poor eyesight are significant public health issues globally and specifically in Ethiopia. In Ethiopia, there is limited access to cataract surgery and refractive error treatment centers. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the role of health system support in improving access to eye care services, particularly cataract surgery and refractive error treatment services in two secondary eye care units (SECUs)., Methods: A parallel mixed-lived experience study was conducted in two SECUs. A desk review of relevant project documents and health facility activity reports was performed for quantitative data. The study was conducted from 12 December 2022 to 30 January 2023. A total of 21 in-depth interview participants were included., Results: Overall, 14 106 cataract surgeries were performed during the pilot project implementation period. Assela Teaching and Referral Hospital Eye Care Unit performed cataract surgery 20-30 times per week. Similarly, Debre Tabor Comprehensive Hospital performed cataract surgery 18-24 times per week. The refractive service of the two SECUs was planned to range from 15-30 to 60 per week, and the refractive services were increased from 50-60 per week in both eye care units., Conclusions: This project has significantly helped the existing health system achieve the 2030 global target and has improved access to eye care services in selected SECUs. Background: Proper use of emergency contraception can reduce unintended pregnancy and the risk of abortion. Despite this fact, there is a high rate of unwanted pregnancies among adolescents in Ethiopia. Therefore, determining the level of knowledge and use of Emergency contraceptives (EC) among female youth is important., Objective: To assess Knowledge and use of EC methods and their associated factors among female college students in Gondar City, Northwest Ethiopia, 2023., Methods: Institution-based cross-sectional study was employed among 814 female college students in Gondar City from April 15 to 28, 2023. A multi-stage sampling technique was applied to select the study participants. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect the data. Epi-data version 4.6 and STATA Version 16, respectively, were used for data entry and analysis. A logistic regression model was fitted to identify factors associated with the outcome variables. Statistical significance was defined at a p-value < 0.05 and a corresponding 95% confidence interval., Result: In this study, 46.2% [95% CI (42.78, 49.63%)] of the participants had adequate knowledge about EC and 26.1% [95% CI (22.82-29.74%)] of sexually active participants used EC. Muslim religion [AOR = 1.82: 95% CI (1.07, 3.09)], being single [AOR = 0.34: 95% CI (0.19, 0.63)], no discussion about reproductive health issues with their husband/partner [AOR = 0.43: 95% CI (0.27, 0.69)], year of study; second year [AOR = 1.63: 95% CI (1.03, 2.58)], third year [AOR = 1.80: 95% CI (1.11, 2.94)], and fourth-year students [AOR = 2.91: 95% CI (1.43, 5.96)] were significantly associated with knowledge about EC. While no discussion about reproductive health with their husband/partner [AOR = 0.09: 95% CI (0.04, 0.20)], monthly allowance [AOR = 3.03: 95% CI (1.54, 5.95)], perceive use emergency contraceptives as not a sin [AOR = 2.59: 95% CI (1.20, 5.60], knowledge about EC [AOR = 2.32: 95% CI (1.253, 4.29)] were associated with the use of EC., Conclusions: Participants' knowledge and of use EC in the study area was low. Religion, years of study, marital status, monthly allowance, perception and knowledge, and having discussion were associated with the use of EC. Objective: About 90% of eye health problems are preventable or curable with existing cost-effective interventions. There is limited evidence on eye healthcare utilisation (ECU) and the factors influencing it in the study area. This study aimed to determine the level of ECU and the associated factors in Southern Ethiopia., Design: A community-based, cross-sectional study was conducted in Southern Ethiopia from 1 June to 15 July 2023. Data were analysed using SPSS V.27., Setting: Two selected districts (Dita and Uba Debretsehay) in Southern Ethiopia., Participants: Permanent residents living in randomly selected kebeles., Outcome Measure: The level of ECU was the outcome measure. A binary logistic regression model was used to check the association between explanatory variables and the dependent variable. To avoid many variables and unstable estimates and to control for possible confounders in the subsequent model, only variables that reached a p value of less than 0.25 on binary analysis were used in the multivariate logistic regression analysis to identify factors independently associated with ECU., Results: 992 respondents participated in this study, with a response rate of 95.4%. The prevalence of ECU within the past 2 years was 21.6% (95% CI 19.0, 24.3). The reported barriers to ECU were lack of awareness (123, 40.6%) and lack of money (58, 19.2%). Age <30 years (adjusted OR (AOR)=2.7; 95% CI 1.5, 4.6), being male (AOR=2.2; 95% CI 1.4, 3.6), shorter travel time (AOR=2.0; 95% CI 1.3, 3.1), undergoing regular vision check-ups (AOR=5.4; 95% CI 3.47, 8.37), history of eye diseases (AOR=4.8; 95% CI 2.5, 9.1) and having trichiasis (AOR=1.5; 95% CI 1.1, 2.3) were positively associated with eye care service utilisation. Low wealth quantile (AOR=0.62; 95% CI 0.39, 0.98) and poor knowledge (AOR=0.26; 95% CI 0.16, 0.44) were negatively associated with eye care service utilisation., Conclusions: The ECU within the past 2 years was a quarter. Socioeconomic factors, disease-related factors and respondent knowledge are independently associated with ECU. Designing strategies that can improve the capacity of healthcare facilities and patient awareness is important in order to reduce barriers and improve service utilisation. Introduction: Anxiety is a commonly reported mental health disorder that significantly contributes to the global burden of disease. However, proper counseling, problem-solving strategies, and promotion of healthy lifestyle practices have a positive effect on reducing nurse anxiety, but there is limited evidence in Ethiopia, particularly in this study area. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the prevalence and identify factors affecting nurse anxiety in Northwest Ethiopia's comprehensive specialized hospitals., Methods: An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 746 study participants from April 14 to May 20, 2023. A simple random sampling technique was used. An interviewer-administered questionnaire was used. Data were entered into EpiData version 4.6.0 and exported to STATA version 17 for analysis. In binary logistic regression, variables with a p-value of less than 0.25 were considered candidates for multivariable logistic regression. An association was declared at a p-value of less than 0.05 with a 95% confidence interval., Result: In this study, the prevalence of anxiety was 33.9%. Thus, being female [adjusted odds ratios (AOR) = 1.53, 95% CI = 1.08, 2.22], working in an emergency department (AOR = 3.65, 95% CI = 1.83, 7.28), working night duty shifts (AOR = 3.12, 95% CI = 2.19, 4.46), having conflict with coworkers (AOR = 1.7, 95% CI = 1.14, 2.51), and having poor social support (AOR = 2.13, 95% CI = 1.23, 3.69) were variables significantly associated with anxiety., Conclusion: This study revealed that one-third of nurses experienced anxiety, which is a critical indicator of mental health within this population. Important factors that were found to be significantly associated with anxiety include being female, working in the emergency department, having a conflict with coworkers, having poor social support, and working night duty shifts. These findings show the need for the implementation of counseling services and the adaptation of effective coping strategies for nurses working at comprehensive specialized hospitals. Introduction: Traumatic brain injuries are a major public health concern that contributes to youth morbidity and mortality in developing nations, including Ethiopia. Despite of this, little is known about head injury in the study area. The goal of the study was to identify the incidence, risk factors and outcomes for traumatic head injury among trauma patients who visited at the Yanet Trauma and Surgery Specialized Centre., Methods: This was a 5 year an institutional-based retrospective cohort study conducted among 1,029 patients who experienced trauma and admitted at the Yanet Trauma and Surgical Specialized Centre. The research was carried out between September 01/2023 to October 15/2023. The study units were selected by using simple random sampling techniques through computer-generated random numbers. The data were collected via a checklist designed on the Kobo toolbox with a smart smartphone. The collected data were exported to a statistical package for Social Science version 27. Then, descriptive statistical analysis was conducted to determine the mean, standard deviation, and median. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression was subsequently conducted to determine the associations between head injury and the independent variables., Result: A total of 1,029 injured patients were followed for 2,302 person-days. Over all, incidence density rate of 14.03/100 person-days (323, 31.4%) [95% CI: 29.5-34%]. The third year of follow-up showed the greatest incidence compared to other years. The most common type of head injury observed during following up were brain contusion (38.1%), followed by epidural hematoma (33.1%), skull fracture (15.8%), and intracerebral hematoma (13.0%). In multivariate logistic model, rural residence [AOR = 1.6; 95% CI: 1.18-2.16], mechanism of injury namely road traffic accident [AOR = 5.5; 95% CI: 2.27-13.34], assault [AOR = 3.4; 95% CI: 1.35-8.37] and comorbidity of chronic disease [AOR = 2.2; 95% CI: 1.13-4.18] were the risk factors significantly associated with head injury., Discussions: The incidence density rate of 14.03/100 person-days. Background: Basic sanitation services and practices are crucial for the well-being and health of a community. However, little is known about the determinants of basic sanitation services in Ethiopia, particularly in the study area., Objectives: To identify the determinants of basic sanitation service coverage among households in the Shashogo district, Hadiya Zone, and Central Ethiopia in 2023., Methods: A case-control investigation was carried out in households in Shashogo District from August 8, 2023, to December 10, 2023. Ten Kebeles were chosen randomly from a total of 34 Kebeles in the district. A total of 579 households (193 cases and 386 controls) were included in the study. The data were gathered with pretested and structured questionnaires in digital form with a smartphone. The data were analyzed with SPSS. Independent t tests and regression models were used to determine predictors of basic sanitation services., Results: The mean (±SD) age of the study participants was 38.2 (±8.9) years. After controlling for confounders in the multivariate analysis, the adoption of improved latrine services among households was found to be associated with greater average monthly income (AOR = 1.841, 95% CI (1.043, 3.251)), the study respondents who had access to the necessary materials for latrine construction/upgrade were approximately 3.5 times more likely to adopt improved latrine services among households with (AOR = 3.477 (95% CI = 1.314, 9.202) than among those who lacked access to the necessary materials for latrine construction, the study respondents who had training in sanitation and hygiene (AOR = 4.744, 95% CI (2.984, 7.542)) and who had sufficient knowledge about the adoption of improved latrine services (AOR = 2.020, 95% CI (1.125, 3.628)) were found to be determinants of the adoption of improved latrine services among households., Conclusion: This study revealed that economics, knowledge, attitudes and practices, infrastructure, and culture were identified as determinants of the adoption of improved latrines in the study area. Poor sanitation significantly impacts economic, social, environmental and many other direct and indirect impacts on the well-being of citizens. Background: Low hemoglobin level is the most common public health problem during pregnancy in developing countries including Ethiopia, which is affecting both mother and fetus. However, the determinants of anemia among pregnant women are not well studied., Objective: To assess the determinates of hemoglobin among pregnant women in rural agro-pastoralist communities in the South Omo zone, Ethiopia., Method: Community-based cross-sectional study was done in rural agro-pastoralist communities. A multistage stratified sampling technique was used to select 526 pregnant women. Data were collected by using structured questionnaires. Hemoglobin level was measured by using HemoCue ® Hb301. Data were analyzed by using a statistical package for the social science version 26. Descriptive (Mean, standard deviation, frequency, range), bivariate and multivariate analysis was carried out to check the association between lower hemoglobin levels and independent variables. The output is presented in tables and figures., Result: The mean (±SD) of hemoglobin concentration was 11.8 ± 1.7. The overall prevalence of anemia was 39.9% [95% CI: 35.5, 44.4], 19.4% (95% CI: 16.0, 23.2) was mild, 19.6% (95% CI: 16.27, 2.5) was moderate and 0.9% (95% CI: 0.25, 2.25) was severe anemia. Not taking IFA (AOR = 5.7(3.3, 9.8)), severe under nutrition (AOR = 8.9(2.1, 37.3)), no fish food (AOR = 2.4(1.3, 4.5)), drinking coffee (AOR = 1.6(1.0, 2.6)), moderate food insecurity (AOR = 2.5(1.4, 4.6)), and no malaria infection (AOR = 0.6(0.4, 0.9)) were statistically significant with anemia., Conclusion: The anaemia is a public health problem in this study area. Ureteral stents play a vital role in urologic surgeries, aiding in urinary flow maintenance, obstruction alleviation and facilitating healing. However, when stents are forgotten, they can lead to encrustation, resulting in significant patient morbidity and posing challenges for urologists Stent-related complications have been shown to increase with the duration of time the stent is left in place. This report details the clinical presentation, diagnostic process, and treatment of a 68-year-old male patient had a neglected stent placed 18 years ago after extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy. He presented with severe stent encrustation, a solitary giant bladder stone, and renal stones. The patient underwent a cystolithotomy to remove the bladder stone followed by an ultrasound-guided percutaneous nephrolithotomy with pneumatic lithotripsy in a separate procedure. Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is endemic and has a substantial impact on the livestock sector in Ethiopia and other low and middle-income countries (LMICs). With a national emphasis on dairy farm intensification to boost milk production and spur economic growth, the incidence of bTB is anticipated to rise. However, Ethiopia, like other LMICs, lacks a comprehensive national bTB control strategy due to the economic and social infeasibility of traditional test-and-cull (TC) approaches. To inform the development of such a strategy, we evaluated the effectiveness and feasibility of TC and test-and-segregation (TSg) strategies for bTB control on Ethiopian dairy farms. A TC approach was used at Farm A [N = 62; comparative cervical test (CCT) > 4 mm, starting prevalence 11.3%] while TSg was implemented at Farm B (N = 45; CCT > 4 mm, prevalence 22.2%), with testing intervals of 2-4 months. Both strategies achieved a reduction in bTB prevalence to 0%, requiring seven rounds of TC over 18 months at Farm A, and five rounds of TSg over 12 months at Farm B's negative herd. The results show that adopting more sensitive thresholds [CCT > 0 mm or single cervical test (SCT) > 2 mm] during later rounds was pivotal in identifying and managing previously undetected infections, emphasizing the critical need for optimized diagnostic thresholds. Cost analysis revealed that TC was approximately twice as expensive as TSg, primarily due to testing, labor, and cow losses in TC, versus construction of new facilities and additional labor for TSg. This underscores the economic and logistical challenges of bTB management in resource-limited settings. Taken together, our study highlights an urgent need for the exploration of alternative approaches including TSg and or vaccination to mitigate within herd transmission and enable implementation of bTB control in regions where TC is not feasible., (© 2024. Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane is an organo-chlorine insecticide used for malaria and agricultural pest control, but it is the most persistent pollutant, endangering both human and environmental health. The primary aim of the research is to screen, characterize, and assess putative fungi that degrade DDT for mycoremediation. Samples of soil and wastewater were gathered from Addis Ababa, Koka, and Ziway. Fungi were isolated and purified using potato dextrose media. Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption, Ionization, and Flight Duration The technique of mass spectrometry was employed to identify fungi. It was found that the finally selected isolate, AS1, was Aspergillus niger . Based on growth factor optimization at DDT concentrations (0, 3500, and 7000 ppm), temperatures (25, 30, and 35 °C), and pH levels (4, 7, and 10), the potential DDT-tolerant fungal isolates were investigated. A Box-Behnken experimental design was used to analyze and optimize fungal biomass and sporulation. The highest biomass (0.981 ± 0.22 g) and spore count (5.60 ± 0.32 log/mL) of A. niger were found through optimization assessment, and this fungus was chosen as a potential DDT-degrader. For DDT degradation investigations by A. niger in DDT-amended liquid media, gas chromatograph-electron capture detector technology was employed. DDT and its main metabolites, DDE and DDD, were eliminated from both media to the tune of 96-99 % at initial DDT concentrations of 1750, 3500, 5250, and 7000 ppm.
