108. Uptake of metallic nanoparticles containing essential (Cu, Zn and Fe) and non-essential (Ag, Ce and Ti) elements by crops: A meta-analysis.

Abstract

The specific properties of nanoparticles can induce toxic or promoting effects on plant growth. We performed a meta-analysis of 173 studies to evaluate the uptake and accumulation of metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) by crops. Studies on the main cereal/vegetable crops (wheat, tomato, bean, maize, rice and cucumber) and Ag, Zn, Ce, Fe, Cu and Ti containing MNPs were mostly found; 63% of the studies used MNPs with size <30 nm, and root application accounted for 84% of all studies. Under root exposure, metal concentrations were reduced by up to 2 orders of magnitude from root through shoot to leaf. Moreover, the uptake preference of MNPs or dissolved metals was element-specific and varied among tissues. Plants accumulated generally higher concentrations of the three essential elements (Cu, Zn and Fe) than of the non-essential ones (Ag, Ce and Ti). Also, foliar application was more efficient than root exposure. Metal concentrations in shoots increased with decreasing particle size for non-essential elements, but showed a variable increase for essential elements as size decreased. Besides, the uptake of MNPs increased with more negative zeta potential (especially for Cu and Zn). Overall, the plant essential elements (Cu, Zn and Fe) were preferred taken up as MNPs, while for non-essential elements (Ag and Ce) uptake as dissolved metals was more common. We conclude that for plant nanofertilizers, foliar application of essential elements as small MNPs might be more efficient for crop uptake than the uptake of dissolved metals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background and Aims: Root restricting layers often hinder crops from accessing the large reservoir of bioavailable mineral nutrients situated in subsoil. This study aims to explore changes in the mean nutrient uptake depth of cereal crops when removing root restricting layers through subsoil management. Methods: Subsoil management was performed by deep loosening, cultivation of lucerne as deep-rooting pre-crop, and their combination with compost incorporation. Management effects were evaluated by means of shoot biomass and element concentrations in shoots and soil compartments. The mean nutrient uptake depth was fingerprinted by graphically matching the 87Sr/86Sr ratios in shoots with the 87Sr/86Sr ratios in the exchangeable fraction in soil. Nutrient uplift from depth to topsoil was inferred from element concentrations in the exchangeable fraction in soil. Results: Shoot biomass remained constant in management and control plots. The mean nutrient uptake depth changed with subsoil management in the order: deep loosening < control < deep loosening with compost incorporation. The latter coincided with a reallocation of compost-derived Na and hence resulted in increased levels of bioavailable Na below the depth of compost incorporation, which may have led to an improved water use efficiency of the crops. Thus, Na relocation triggered the deepening of the mean uptake depth of water and nutrients. Moreover, nutrient uplift from depth to topsoil was evident 21 months after subsoiling. Conclusion: Subsoil management by deep loosening with compost incorporation provides a sustainable use of soil resources because otherwise unused deep geogenic-derived nutrient reservoirs were additionally involved in crop nutrition. 133. Are magnesium stable isotopes a valuable geochemical tool in agronomy?

Abstract

A sustainable use of soil resources is urgently required to cope with the increasing demand for agricultural products. Advanced soil cultivation methods like subsoiling were suggested but analytical tools to measure changes in the nutrient use efficiency of crops are still missing. Here we tested the applicability of Mg stable isotopes as novel evaluation tool in agronomy and validated our results with the nutrient uptake depth proxy 87Sr/86Sr. First, we conceptually demonstrated under which conditions changes in the Mg isotope composition (δ26Mg) of crops and the bioavailable fraction of Mg could be resolved from analytical uncertainty, when simulating subsoiling on soils with distinct Mg supply. Shifts in δ26Mg values are only detectable if i) the crop uptake-related Mg isotope fractionation factor is high, ii) a high Mg uptake flux of crops faces a low Mg supply in soil, and iii) subsoiling causes a considerable deepening of the nutrient uptake depth. Second, we tested our concept on field trials, where deep loosening with and without compost incorporation was conducted. Although 87Sr/86Sr indicates a deepening of the nutrient uptake depth after subsoiling with compost, shifts in d26Mg values of crops and the exchangeable fraction were mostly unresolvable from the analytical uncertainty. Yet, systematic shifts in δ26Mg values among crops cultivated on and beside a melioration strip were found and attributed to the uplift of isotopically distinct compost-derived Mg. Still, Mg stable isotopes represent a valuable tool towards nutrient use efficiency measures on soils with low Mg supply, unless agricultural lime is applied.

134. Atacama Desert soils as potential habitat for life at the extreme dry limit

Abstract

In the soils of the Atacama Desert its evolutionary history is buried and thus memorized. This is because of the extreme and prolonged dryness, which enabled the preservation of organic residues of life. Until now it is not known if and how life has survived under such conditions. Therefore, we aimed at quantifying and identifying different sources and hotspots of organic matter (OM) along four west-east directed transects, spanning the Atacama Desert from north to south and selected soil profiles which were dug to 0.6-3.4 m depth. Soil organic carbon (SOC) concentrations were determined by temperature-dependent differentiation; n-alkane and PAH signatures, as markers for plant residues and atmospheric, external inputs of OM, respectively, were detected using gas-chromatographic separation and mass-sensitive detection; potential hotspots of OM accumulation were identified by soil moisture content, electric conductivity and microbial community structure. We found that with increasing aridity SOC stocks decreased from 53±53 to 4±1 t ha-1 in the topsoil. In the subsoil, SOC concentrations peaked between 40 and 150 cm depth, also in hyper-arid regions, adding 74.0-94.3% of subsoil SOC to the topsoil SOC stock. Biomarker analyses revealed that OM was partly derived by plant growth, some came by atmospheric transport and that there exist habitats of life at greater soil depth. Now further studies are needed to investigate how much of this OM is derived from the atmosphere or was built in-situ and what keeps the deep biosphere alive and who is colonizing it.

136. Measuring fallout plutonium activities in soils to trace the fate of soil organic matter in arable land, Republic of South Africa

Abstract

The Free State Province comprises one of the major agricultural regions in the Republic of South Africa. Here, the loss of soil organic matter (SOM) from arable land bears the risk to pose a serious threat to regional crop production yields. For agricultural land located within the Free State Province, previous studies have found a strong relationship between (decreasing) SOM contents and the total time period soils were subject to cropping practices. While wind erosion and mineralisation processes have been identified to be the dominant factors causing this pattern, their individual contribution to SOM loss remained difficult to quantify. Datasets obtained from monitoring stations measuring soil redistribution by wind rarely cover timespans exceeding a few years of observation. To overcome this problem, we measure fallout 239+240Pu inventories in topsoils sampled from agricultural plots with different cropping histories. Plutonium inventories are frequently quantified to infer fluvial soil redistribution patterns and rates during the Anthropocene, but their application to investigate wind erosion is still at an early stage of development. The approach we follow allows us to identify strong correlations between SOM loss and decreasing radionuclide inventories during the second half of the 20th century. Furthermore, cropped soils lost about 50% of their initial 239+240Pu, indicating that the decrease of SOM contents over time is predominantly caused by wind erosion. Our results, which are in good agreement with 137Cs data, underscore the necessity to tackle unsustainable cropping practices in the Republic of South Africa and in comparable settings on Earth.

Abstract

Plant root traits play a crucial role in resource acquisition and crop performance when soil nutrient availability is low. However, the respective trait responses are complex, particularly at the field scale, and poorly understood due to difficulties in root phenotyping monitoring, inaccurate sampling, and environmental conditions. Here, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of 50 field studies to identify the effects of nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), or potassium (K) deficiencies on the root systems of common crops. Root length and biomass were generally reduced, while root length per shoot biomass was enhanced under N and P deficiency. Root length decreased by 9% under N deficiency and by 14% under P deficiency, while root biomass was reduced by 7% in N-deficient and by 25% in Pdeficient soils. Root length per shoot biomass increased by 33% in N deficient and 51% in P deficient soils. The root-to-shoot ratio was often enhanced (44%) under N-poor conditions, but no consistent response of the root-to-shoot ratio to Pdeficiency was found. Only a few K-deficiency studies suited our approach and, in those cases, no differences inmorphological traitswere reported. We encountered the following drawbacks when performing this analysis: limited number of root traits investigated at field scale, differences in the timing and severity of nutrient deficiencies, missing data (e.g., soil nutrient status and time of stress), and the impact of other conditions in the field. Nevertheless, our analysis indicates that, in general, nutrient deficiencies increased the root-length-to-shoot-biomass ratios of crops, with impacts decreasing in the order deficient P > deficient N > deficient K. Our review resolved inconsistencies that were often found in the individual field experiments, and led to a better understanding of the physiological mechanisms underlying root plasticity in fields with low nutrient availability.
