Interior unsafe is an essential design paradigm advocated by the Rust community in system software development. However, there is little official guidance or few best practices regarding how to encapsulate unsafe code and achieve interior unsafe. The problem is critical because the Rust compiler is incapable of verifying the soundness of a safe function containing unsafe code. Falsely declaring an interior unsafe function as safe may undermine the fundamental memory-safety guarantee of Rust. To address this issue, this paper studies how interior unsafe is achieved in practice, aiming to identify best practices to guide Rust code design concerning unsafe code encapsulation. Specifically, we propose a novel unsafety isolation graph to model the essential usage and encapsulation of unsafe code. Based on the graph, we further propose four major isolation types and nine structural patterns to split a graph into several small self-contained subgraphs. These subgraphs can serve as useful audit units for examining the soundness of unsafe code encapsulation. We applied our approach to four real-world Rust projects. The experimental results demonstrate that our method is effective in characterizing their encapsulation code. Additionally, we identified two common issues in these projects that could complicate soundness verification or incur unsoundness issues.

Pioneering advancements in large language model-powered agents have underscored the design pattern of multi-agent collaboration, demonstrating that collective intelligence can surpass the capabilities of each individual. Inspired by the neural scaling law, which posits that increasing neurons leads to emergent abilities, this study investigates whether a similar principle applies to increasing agents in multi-agent collaboration. Technically, we propose multi-agent collaboration networks (MacNet), which utilize directed acyclic graphs to organize agents and streamline their interactive reasoning via topological ordering, with solutions derived from their dialogues. Extensive experiments show that MacNet consistently outperforms baseline models, enabling effective agent collaboration across various network topologies and supporting cooperation among more than a thousand agents. Notably, we observed a small-world collaboration phenomenon, where topologies resembling small-world properties achieved superior performance. Additionally, we identified a collaborative scaling law, indicating that normalized solution quality follows a logistic growth pattern as scaling agents, with collaborative emergence occurring much earlier than previously observed instances of neural emergence. We introduce NeuroSA, a neuromorphic architecture specifically designed to ensure asymptotic convergence to the ground state of an Ising problem using an annealing process that is governed by the physics of quantum mechanical tunneling using Fowler-Nordheim (FN). The core component of NeuroSA consists of a pair of asynchronous ON-OFF neurons, which effectively map classical simulated annealing (SA) dynamics onto a network of integrate-and-fire (IF) neurons. The threshold of each ON-OFF neuron pair is adaptively adjusted by an FN annealer which replicates the optimal escape mechanism and convergence of SA, particularly at low temperatures. To validate the effectiveness of our neuromorphic Ising machine, we systematically solved various benchmark MAX-CUT combinatorial optimization problems. Across multiple runs, NeuroSA consistently generates solutions that approach the state-of-the-art level with high accuracy (greater than 99%), and without any graph-specific hyperparameter tuning. Algebraic boundaries of convex semi-algebraic sets are closely related to polynomial optimization problems. Building upon Rainer Sinn's work, we refine the stratification of iterated singular loci to a Whitney (a) stratification, which gives a list of candidates of varieties whose dual is an irreducible component of the algebraic boundary of the dual convex body. We also present an algorithm based on Teissier's criterion to compute Whitney (a) stratifications, which employs conormal spaces and prime decomposition.

Continual Learning (CL) poses a significant challenge in Artificial Intelligence, aiming to mirror the human ability to incrementally acquire knowledge and skills. While extensive research has focused on CL within the context of classification tasks, the advent of increasingly powerful generative models necessitates the exploration of Continual Learning of Generative models (CLoG). This paper advocates for shifting the research focus from classification-based CL to CLoG. We systematically identify the unique challenges presented by CLoG compared to traditional classification-based CL. We adapt three types of existing CL methodologies, replay-based, regularization-based, and parameter-isolation-based methods to generative tasks and introduce comprehensive benchmarks for CLoG that feature great diversity and broad task coverage. Our benchmarks and results yield intriguing insights that can be valuable for developing future CLoG methods. Additionally, we will release a codebase designed to facilitate easy benchmarking and experimentation in CLoG publicly at https://github.com/linhaowei1/CLoG. We believe that shifting the research focus to CLoG will benefit the continual learning community and illuminate the path for next-generation AI-generated content (AIGC) in a lifelong learning paradigm.

We study 51 jellyfish galaxy candidates in the Fornax, Antlia, and Hydra clusters. These candidates are identified using the JClass scheme based on the visual classification of wide-field, twelve-band optical images obtained from the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey. A comprehensive astrophysical analysis of the jellyfish (JClass > 0), non-jellyfish (JClass = 0), and independently organized control samples is undertaken. We develop a semi-automated pipeline using self-supervised learning and similarity search to detect jellyfish galaxies. The proposed framework is designed to assist visual classifiers by providing more reliable JClasses for galaxies. We find that jellyfish candidates exhibit a lower Gini coefficient, higher entropy, and a lower 2D S\'ersic index as the jellyfish features in these galaxies become more pronounced. Jellyfish candidates show elevated star formation rates (including contributions from the main body and tails) by $\sim$1.75 dex, suggesting a significant increase in the SFR caused by the ram-pressure stripping phenomenon. Galaxies in the Antlia and Fornax clusters preferentially fall towards the cluster's centre, whereas only a mild preference is observed for Hydra galaxies. Our self-supervised pipeline, applied in visually challenging cases, offers two main advantages: it reduces human visual biases and scales effectively for large datasets. Overfitting in RL has become one of the main obstacles to applications in reinforcement learning(RL). Existing methods do not provide explicit semantic constrain for the feature extractor, hindering the agent from learning a unified cross-domain representation and resulting in performance degradation on unseen domains. Besides, abundant data from multiple domains are needed. To address these issues, in this work, we propose prompt-based visual alignment (PVA), a robust framework to mitigate the detrimental domain bias in the image for zero-shot policy transfer. Inspired that Visual-Language Model (VLM) can serve as a bridge to connect both text space and image space, we leverage the semantic information contained in a text sequence as an explicit constraint to train a visual aligner. Thus, the visual aligner can map images from multiple domains to a unified domain and achieve good generalization performance. To better depict semantic information, prompt tuning is applied to learn a sequence of learnable tokens. With explicit constraints of semantic information, PVA can learn unified cross-domain representation under limited access to cross-domain data and achieves great zero-shot generalization ability in unseen domains. We verify PVA on a vision-based autonomous driving task with CARLA simulator. This position paper argues for, and offers, a critical lens through which to examine the current AI frenzy in the landscape architecture profession. In it, the authors propose five archetypes or mental modes that landscape architects might inhabit when thinking about AI. Rather than limiting judgments of AI use to a single axis of acceleration, these archetypes and corresponding narratives exist along a relational spectrum and are permeable, allowing LAs to take on and switch between them according to context. We model these relationships between the archetypes and their contributions to AI advancement using a causal loop diagram (CLD), and with those interactions argue that more nuanced ways of approaching AI might also open new modes of practice in the new digital economy.

Manufacturing complexities and uncertainties have impeded the transition from material prototypes to commercial batteries, making prototype verification critical to quality assessment. A fundamental challenge involves deciphering intertwined chemical processes to characterize degradation patterns and their quantitative relationship with battery performance. Here we show that a physics-informed machine learning approach can quantify and visualize temporally resolved losses concerning thermodynamics and kinetics only using electric signals. Our method enables non-destructive degradation pattern characterization, expediting temperature-adaptable predictions of entire lifetime trajectories, rather than end-of-life points. The verification speed is 25 times faster yet maintaining 95.1% accuracy across temperatures. Such advances facilitate more sustainable management of defective prototypes before massive production, establishing a 19.76 billion USD scrap material recycling market by 2060 in China. By incorporating stepwise charge acceptance as a measure of the initial manufacturing variability of normally identical batteries, we can immediately identify long-term degradation variations. We attribute the predictive power to interpreting machine learning insights using material-agnostic featurization taxonomy for degradation pattern decoupling. Our findings offer new possibilities for dynamic system analysis, such as battery prototype degradation, demonstrating that complex pattern evolutions can be accurately predicted in a non-destructive and data-driven fashion by integrating physics-informed machine learning.

In the realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the importance of Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) is increasingly recognized, particularly as AI models become more integral to our lives. One notable single-instance XAI approach is counterfactual explanation, which aids users in comprehending a model's decisions and offers guidance on altering these decisions. Specifically in the context of image classification models, effective image counterfactual explanations can significantly enhance user understanding. This paper introduces a novel method for computing feature importance within the feature space of a black-box model. By employing information fusion techniques, our method maximizes the use of data to address feature counterfactual explanations in the feature space. Subsequently, we utilize an image generation model to transform these feature counterfactual explanations into image counterfactual explanations. Our experiments demonstrate that the counterfactual explanations generated by our method closely resemble the original images in both pixel and feature spaces. Additionally, our method outperforms established baselines, achieving impressive experimental results.

The accuracy of Generative AI is increasingly critical as Large Language Models become more widely adopted. Due to potential flaws in training data and hallucination in outputs, inaccuracy can significantly impact individuals interests by distorting perceptions and leading to decisions based on flawed information. Therefore, ensuring these models accuracy is not only a technical necessity but also a regulatory imperative. ICO call for evidence on the accuracy of Generative AI marks a timely effort in ensuring responsible Generative AI development and use. CREATe, as the Centre for Regulation of the Creative Economy based at the University of Glasgow, has conducted relevant research involving intellectual property, competition, information and technology law. We welcome the ICO call for evidence on the accuracy of Generative AI, and we are happy to highlight aspects of data protection law and AI regulation that we believe should receive attention.

Despite impressive advancements in diffusion-based video editing models in altering video attributes, there has been limited exploration into modifying motion information while preserving the original protagonist's appearance and background. In this paper, we propose MotionFollower, a lightweight score-guided diffusion model for video motion editing. To introduce conditional controls to the denoising process, MotionFollower leverages two of our proposed lightweight signal controllers, one for poses and the other for appearances, both of which consist of convolution blocks without involving heavy attention calculations. Further, we design a score guidance principle based on a two-branch architecture, including the reconstruction and editing branches, which significantly enhance the modeling capability of texture details and complicated backgrounds. Concretely, we enforce several consistency regularizers and losses during the score estimation. The resulting gradients thus inject appropriate guidance to the intermediate latents, forcing the model to preserve the original background details and protagonists' appearances without interfering with the motion modification. Experiments demonstrate the competitive motion editing ability of MotionFollower qualitatively and quantitatively. Compared with MotionEditor, the most advanced motion editing model, MotionFollower achieves an approximately 80% reduction in GPU memory while delivering superior motion editing performance and exclusively supporting large camera movements and actions., Comment: 23 pages, 18 figures. With the rapid development of machine vision technology in recent years, many researchers have begun to focus on feature compression that is better suited for machine vision tasks. The target of feature compression is deep features, which arise from convolution in the middle layer of a pre-trained convolutional neural network. However, due to the large volume of data and high level of abstraction of deep features, their application is primarily limited to machine-centric scenarios, which poses significant constraints in situations requiring human-computer interaction. This paper investigates features and textures and proposes a texture-guided feature compression strategy based on their characteristics. Specifically, the strategy comprises feature layers and texture layers. The feature layers serve the machine, including a feature selection module and a feature reconstruction network. With the assistance of texture images, they selectively compress and transmit channels relevant to visual tasks, reducing feature data while providing high-quality features for the machine. The texture layers primarily serve humans and consist of an image reconstruction network. This image reconstruction network leverages features and texture images to reconstruct preview images for humans. Our method fully exploits the characteristics of texture and features. It eliminates feature redundancy, reconstructs high-quality preview images for humans, and supports decision-making. The experimental results demonstrate excellent performance when employing our proposed method to compress the deep features.

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has spectroscopically confirmed numerous galaxies at $z > 10$. While weak rest-ultraviolet emission lines have only been seen in a handful of sources, the stronger rest-optical emission lines are highly diagnostic and accessible at mid-infrared wavelengths with the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) of JWST. We report the photometric detection of the most distant spectroscopically confirmed galaxy JADES-GS-z14-0 at $z = 14.32^{+0.08}_{-0.20}$ with MIRI at $7.7\ \mu\mathrm{m}$. The most plausible solution for the stellar population properties is that this galaxy contains half a billion solar masses in stars with a strong burst of star formation in the most recent few million years. For this model, at least one-third of the flux at $7.7\ \mu\mathrm{m}$ comes from the rest-optical emission lines $\mathrm{H}\beta$ and/or $\mathrm{[OIII]}\lambda\lambda4959,5007$. Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) devices, implemented as a probabilistic deep sequence model. Existing mechanical simulators for MCS rely on oversimplifying assumptions and are insensitive to patient-specific behavior, limiting their applicability to real-world treatment scenarios. To address these shortcomings, our model Domain Adversarial Neural Process (DANP) employs a neural process architecture, allowing it to capture the probabilistic relationship between MCS pump levels and aortic pressure measurements with uncertainty. We use domain adversarial training to combine simulation data with real-world observations, resulting in a more realistic and diverse representation of potential outcomes. Empirical results with an improvement of 19% in non-stationary trend prediction establish DANP as an effective tool for clinicians to understand and make informed decisions regarding MCS patient treatment.

Fractional quantum anomalous hall effect (FQAHE), a transport effect with fractionally quantized Hall plateau emerging under zero magnetic field, provides a radically new opportunity to engineer topological quantum electronics. By construction of topological flat band with moire engineering, intrinsic FQAHE has been observed in twisted MoTe2 system and rhombohedral pentalayer graphene/hBN moire superlattices with anomalous Hall resistivity quantization number C <= 2/3 including the gapless composite Fermi-liquid state with C = 1/2. Here we experimentally demonstrate a new system of rhombohedral hexalayer graphene (RHG)/hBN moire superlattices showing both fractional and integer quantum anomalous Hall effects when the lowest flat Chern band is fractionally and fully filled at zero magnetic field. The zero-field Hall resistance Rho_xy = h/Ce2 is quantized to values corresponding to C = 3/5, 2/3, 5/7, 3/4, 7/9 and 1 at moire filling factors v = 3/5, 2/3, 5/7, 3/4, 7/9 and 1, respectively. Particularly, the C = 3/4 FQAHE state at v = 3/4 moire filling featuring a minimum of longitudinal resistance Rho_xx and fractionally quantized Hall resistance Rho_xy = 4h/3e2, is observed for the first time under zero magnetic field. Such a state may be similar to the C = 3/4 fractional quantum hall (FQHE) state recently observed at high magnetic fields9,10 and possibly host fractional charge excitations obeying non-Abelian statistics. By tuning the electrical and magnetic fields at 0 < v < 1, we have observed a sign reversal of the Hall resistivity for v = 2/3 state, indicating a transition from quasi-electron-like excitations to quasi-hole ones. Our experiment has established RHG/hBN moire superlattices a promising platform to explore quasi-particles with fractional charge excitations and non-Abelian anyons at zero magnetic field.

Qudits hold great promise for efficient quantum computation and the simulation of high-dimensional quantum systems. Utilizing a local Hilbert space of dimension d > 2 is known to speed up certain quantum algorithms relative to their qubit counterparts given efficient local qudit control and measurement. However, the direct realization of high-dimensional rotations and projectors has proved challenging, with most experiments relying on decompositions of SU(d) operations into series of rotations between two-level subspaces of adjacent states and projective readout of a small number of states. Here we employ simultaneous multi-frequency drives to generate rotations and projections in an effective spin-7/2 system by mapping it onto the energy eigenstates of a superconducting circuit. We implement single-shot readout of the 8 states using a multi-tone dispersive readout (F_assignment = 88.3%) and exploit the strong nonlinearity in a high EJ/EC transmon to simultaneously address each transition and realize a spin displacement operator. By combining the displacement operator with a virtual SNAP gate, we realize arbitrary single-qudit unitary operations in O(d) physical pulses and extract spin displacement gate fidelities ranging from 0.997 to 0.989 for virtual spins of size j = 1 to j = 7/2. These native qudit operations could be combined with entangling operations to explore qudit-based error correction or simulations of lattice gauge theories with qudits. Our multi-frequency approach to qudit control and measurement can be readily extended to other physical platforms that realize a multi-level system coupled to a cavity and can become a building block for efficient qudit-based quantum computation and simulation.

Building open agents has always been the ultimate goal in AI research, and creative agents are the more enticing. Existing LLM agents excel at long-horizon tasks with well-defined goals (e.g., `mine diamonds' in Minecraft). However, they encounter difficulties on creative tasks with open goals and abstract criteria due to the inability to bridge the gap between them, thus lacking feedback for self-improvement in solving the task. In this work, we introduce autonomous embodied verification techniques for agents to fill the gap, laying the groundwork for creative tasks. Specifically, we propose the Luban agent target creative building tasks in Minecraft, which equips with two-level autonomous embodied verification inspired by human design practices: (1) visual verification of 3D structural speculates, which comes from agent synthesized CAD modeling programs; (2) pragmatic verification of the creation by generating and verifying environment-relevant functionality programs based on the abstract criteria. Extensive multi-dimensional human studies and Elo ratings show that the Luban completes diverse creative building tasks in our proposed benchmark and outperforms other baselines ($33\%$ to $100\%$) in both visualization and pragmatism. Additional demos on the real-world robotic arm show the creation potential of the Luban in the physical world.

Recent knowledge editing methods have primarily focused on modifying structured knowledge in large language models, heavily relying on the assumption that structured knowledge is stored as key-value pairs locally in MLP layers or specific neurons. However, this task setting overlooks the fact that a significant portion of real-world knowledge is stored in an unstructured format, characterized by long-form content, noise, and a complex yet comprehensive nature. The "knowledge locating" and "term-driven optimization" techniques conducted from the assumption used in previous methods (e.g., MEMIT) are ill-suited for unstructured knowledge. To address these challenges, we propose a novel unstructured knowledge editing method, namely UnKE, which extends previous assumptions in the layer dimension and token dimension. Firstly, in the layer dimension, we discard the "knowledge locating" step and treat first few layers as the key, which expand knowledge storage through layers to break the "knowledge stored locally" assumption. Next, we replace "term-driven optimization" with "cause-driven optimization" across all inputted tokens in the token dimension, directly optimizing the last layer of the key generator to perform editing to generate the required key vectors. By utilizing key-value pairs at the layer level, UnKE effectively represents and edits complex and comprehensive unstructured knowledge, leveraging the potential of both the MLP and attention layers. Results on newly proposed unstructure knowledge editing dataset (UnKEBench) and traditional structured datasets demonstrate that UnKE achieves remarkable performance, surpassing strong baselines.

In medical imaging, particularly in early disease detection and prognosis tasks, discerning the rationale behind an AI model's predictions is crucial for evaluating the reliability of its decisions. Conventional explanation methods face challenges in identifying discernible decisive features in medical image classifications, where discriminative features are subtle or not immediately apparent. To bridge this gap, we propose an explainable model that is equipped with both decision reasoning and feature identification capabilities. Our approach not only detects influential image patterns but also uncovers the decisive features that drive the model's final predictions. By implementing our method, we can efficiently identify and visualise class-specific features leveraged by the data-driven model, providing insights into the decision-making processes of deep learning models. We validated our model in the demanding realm of medical prognosis task, demonstrating its efficacy and potential in enhancing the reliability of AI in healthcare and in discovering new knowledge in diseases where prognostic understanding is limited.

High dynamic range (HDR) novel view synthesis (NVS) aims to create photorealistic images from novel viewpoints using HDR imaging techniques. The rendered HDR images capture a wider range of brightness levels containing more details of the scene than normal low dynamic range (LDR) images. Existing HDR NVS methods are mainly based on NeRF. They suffer from long training time and slow inference speed. In this paper, we propose a new framework, High Dynamic Range Gaussian Splatting (HDR-GS), which can efficiently render novel HDR views and reconstruct LDR images with a user input exposure time. Specifically, we design a Dual Dynamic Range (DDR) Gaussian point cloud model that uses spherical harmonics to fit HDR color and employs an MLP-based tone-mapper to render LDR color. The HDR and LDR colors are then fed into two Parallel Differentiable Rasterization (PDR) processes to reconstruct HDR and LDR views. To establish the data foundation for the research of 3D Gaussian splatting-based methods in HDR NVS, we recalibrate the camera parameters and compute the initial positions for Gaussian point clouds. Experiments demonstrate that our HDR-GS surpasses the state-of-the-art NeRF-based method by 3.84 and 1.91 dB on LDR and HDR NVS while enjoying 1000x inference speed and only requiring 6.3% training time. In-context Learning (ICL) empowers large language models (LLMs) to adapt to unseen tasks during inference by prefixing a few demonstration examples prior to test queries. Despite its versatility, ICL incurs substantial computational and memory overheads compared to zero-shot learning and is susceptible to the selection and order of demonstration examples. In this work, we introduce Implicit In-context Learning (I2CL), an innovative paradigm that addresses the challenges associated with traditional ICL by absorbing demonstration examples within the activation space. I2CL first generates a condensed vector representation, namely a context vector, from the demonstration examples. It then integrates the context vector during inference by injecting a linear combination of the context vector and query activations into the model's residual streams. Empirical evaluation on nine real-world tasks across three model architectures demonstrates that I2CL achieves few-shot performance with zero-shot cost and exhibits robustness against the variation of demonstration examples. Furthermore, I2CL facilitates a novel representation of "task-ids", enhancing task similarity detection and enabling effective transfer learning. As Virtual Reality (VR) applications grow in popularity, they have bridged distances and brought users closer together. However, with this growth, there have been increasing concerns about security and privacy, especially related to the motion data used to create immersive experiences. In this study, we highlight a significant security threat in multi-user VR applications, which are applications that allow multiple users to interact with each other in the same virtual space. Specifically, we propose a remote attack that utilizes the avatar rendering information collected from an adversary's game clients to extract user-typed secrets like credit card information, passwords, or private conversations. We do this by (1) extracting motion data from network packets, and (2) mapping motion data to keystroke entries. We conducted a user study to verify the attack's effectiveness, in which our attack successfully inferred 97.62% of the keystrokes. Besides, we performed an additional experiment to underline that our attack is practical, confirming its effectiveness even when (1) there are multiple users in a room, and (2) the attacker cannot see the victims. Moreover, we replicated our proposed attack on four applications to demonstrate the generalizability of the attack. The past neural network design has largely focused on feature representation space dimension and its capacity scaling (e.g., width, depth), but overlooked the feature interaction space scaling. Recent advancements have shown shifted focus towards element-wise multiplication to facilitate higher-dimensional feature interaction space for better information transformation. Despite this progress, multiplications predominantly capture low-order interactions, thus remaining confined to a finite-dimensional interaction space. To transcend this limitation, classic kernel methods emerge as a promising solution to engage features in an infinite-dimensional space. We introduce InfiNet, a model architecture that enables feature interaction within an infinite-dimensional space created by RBF kernel. Our experiments reveal that InfiNet achieves new state-of-the-art, owing to its capability to leverage infinite-dimensional interactions, significantly enhancing model performance.

In this work, we introduce a novel application of foundation models in the domain of nonlinear chemical process modeling. Given the challenges of obtaining accurate first-principles models for real-world chemical processes and the inefficiency of rebuilding and retraining models for new chemical processes, we pose a pivotal question: What if we could develop a single, universal neural network (i.e., foundation model) capable of rapidly adapting to modeling any new chemical process? To address this question, we propose a meta-learning-based approach using Reptile to construct the foundation model, followed by physics-informed adaptation to fine-tune it to new modeling tasks using only a few data samples. To assess the effectiveness of our methodology, we construct a foundation model for various chemical reactions in three classical generic reactors, including continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTRs), batch reactors (BRs), and plug flow reactors (PFRs). Our approach outperforms conventional methods such as data-driven learning, physics-informed learning, transfer learning, and pure meta-learning in a few-shot setting. Furthermore, our method achieves rapid adaptation to new CSTRs, BRs, and PFRs using only a few data samples from the designated tasks. The success of artificial neural networks (ANNs) hinges greatly on the judicious selection of an activation function, introducing non-linearity into network and enabling them to model sophisticated relationships in data. However, the search of activation functions has largely relied on empirical knowledge in the past, lacking theoretical guidance, which has hindered the identification of more effective activation functions. In this work, we offer a proper solution to such issue. Firstly, we theoretically demonstrate the existence of the worst activation function with boundary conditions (WAFBC) from the perspective of information entropy. Furthermore, inspired by the Taylor expansion form of information entropy functional, we propose the Entropy-based Activation Function Optimization (EAFO) methodology. EAFO methodology presents a novel perspective for designing static activation functions in deep neural networks and the potential of dynamically optimizing activation during iterative training. Utilizing EAFO methodology, we derive a novel activation function from ReLU, known as Correction Regularized ReLU (CRReLU). Experiments conducted with vision transformer and its variants on CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100 and ImageNet-1K datasets demonstrate the superiority of CRReLU over existing corrections of ReLU. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a widely-used technique in the fields of bio-medicine, chemistry, and biology for the analysis of chemicals and proteins. The signals from NMR spectroscopy often have low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) due to acquisition noise, which poses significant challenges for subsequent analysis. Recent work has explored the potential of deep learning (DL) for NMR denoising, showing significant performance gains over traditional methods such as total variation (TV) denoising. This paper shows that the performance of DL denoising for NMR can be further improved by combining data-driven training with traditional TV denoising. The proposed TVCondNet method outperforms both traditional TV and DL methods by including the TV solution as a condition during DL training. Our validation on experimentally collected NMR data shows the superior denoising performance and faster inference speed of TVCondNet compared to existing methods.

The infant brain undergoes rapid development in the first few years after birth.Compared to cross-sectional studies, longitudinal studies can depict the trajectories of infants brain development with higher accuracy, statistical power and flexibility.However, the collection of infant longitudinal magnetic resonance (MR) data suffers a notorious dropout problem, resulting in incomplete datasets with missing time points. This limitation significantly impedes subsequent neuroscience and clinical modeling. Yet, existing deep generative models are facing difficulties in missing brain image completion, due to sparse data and the nonlinear, dramatic contrast/geometric variations in the developing brain. We propose LoCI-DiffCom, a novel Longitudinal Consistency-Informed Diffusion model for infant brain image Completion,which integrates the images from preceding and subsequent time points to guide a diffusion model for generating high-fidelity missing data. Our designed LoCI module can work on highly sparse sequences, relying solely on data from two temporal points. Despite wide separation and diversity between age time points, our approach can extract individualized developmental features while ensuring context-aware consistency. Our experiments on a large infant brain MR dataset demonstrate its effectiveness with consistent performance on missing infant brain MR completion even in big gap scenarios, aiding in better delineation of early developmental trajectories.

Accurate detection of vulvovaginal candidiasis is critical for women's health, yet its sparse distribution and visually ambiguous characteristics pose significant challenges for accurate identification by pathologists and neural networks alike. Our eye-tracking data reveals that areas garnering sustained attention - yet not marked by experts after deliberation - are often aligned with false positives of neural networks. Leveraging this finding, we introduce Gaze-DETR, a pioneering method that integrates gaze data to enhance neural network precision by diminishing false positives. Gaze-DETR incorporates a universal gaze-guided warm-up protocol applicable across various detection methods and a gaze-guided rectification strategy specifically designed for DETR-based models. We propose a simple strategy for masking image patches during visual-language contrastive learning that improves the quality of the learned representations and the training speed. During each iteration of training, we randomly mask clusters of visually similar image patches, as measured by their raw pixel intensities. This provides an extra learning signal, beyond the contrastive training itself, since it forces a model to predict words for masked visual structures solely from context. It also speeds up training by reducing the amount of data used in each image. With rapid advances, generative large language models (LLMs) dominate various Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks from understanding to reasoning. Yet, language models' inherent vulnerabilities may be exacerbated due to increased accessibility and unrestricted model training on massive textual data from the Internet. A malicious adversary may publish poisoned data online and conduct backdoor attacks on the victim LLMs pre-trained on the poisoned data. Backdoored LLMs behave innocuously for normal queries and generate harmful responses when the backdoor trigger is activated. Despite significant efforts paid to LLMs' safety issues, LLMs are still struggling against backdoor attacks. As Anthropic recently revealed, existing safety training strategies, including supervised fine-tuning (SFT) and Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF), fail to revoke the backdoors once the LLM is backdoored during the pre-training stage. In this paper, we present Simulate and Eliminate (SANDE) to erase the undesired backdoored mappings for generative LLMs. We initially propose Overwrite Supervised Fine-tuning (OSFT) for effective backdoor removal when the trigger is known. Then, to handle the scenarios where the trigger patterns are unknown, we integrate OSFT into our two-stage framework, SANDE. Unlike previous works that center on the identification of backdoors, our safety-enhanced LLMs are able to behave normally even when the exact triggers are activated. We conduct comprehensive experiments to show that our proposed SANDE is effective against backdoor attacks while bringing minimal harm to LLMs' powerful capability without any additional access to unbackdoored clean models. In this report, we introduce Piccolo2, an embedding model that surpasses other models in the comprehensive evaluation over 6 tasks on CMTEB benchmark, setting a new state-of-the-art. Piccolo2 primarily leverages an efficient multi-task hybrid loss training approach, effectively harnessing textual data and labels from diverse downstream tasks. Autonomous vehicles (AVs) have begun experimental commercialization initiatives in places such as Shanghai, China, and it is a valuable research question whether people's willingness to use AVs has changed from the prior. This study explores Shanghai residents' attitudes towards AVs by applying the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), the Perceived Risk (BAR) model, and introducing perceived externalities as a new psychological variable. Through a survey in Shanghai, where AVs are operational, and structural equation modeling, it was found that perceived usefulness and ease of use positively influence willingness to use AVs, with perceived usefulness being the most significant factor. Perceived externalities have a positive impact, while perceived risk negatively affects willingness to use. Interestingly, ease of use increases perceived risk, but this is mitigated by the benefits perceived in usefulness. This research, differing significantly from previous studies, aims to guide government policy and industry strategies to enhance design, marketing, and popularization.

Braiding is a geometric concept that manifests itself in a variety of scientific contexts from biology to physics, and has been employed to classify bulk band topology in topological materials. Topological edge states can also form braiding structures, as demonstrated recently in a type of topological insulators known as M\"obius insulators, whose topological edge states form two braided bands exhibiting a M\"obius twist. While the formation of M\"obius twist is inspiring, it belongs to the simple Abelian braid group $\mathbb{B}_2$. The most fascinating features about topological braids rely on the non-Abelianness in the higher-order braid group $\mathbb{B}_N$ ($N \geq 3$), which necessitates multiple edge bands, but so far it has not been discussed. Here, based on the gauge enriched symmetry, we develop a scheme to realize non-Abelian braiding of multiple topological edge bands. We propose tight-binding models of topological insulators that are able to generate topological edge states forming non-Abelian braiding structures. Experimental demonstrations are conducted in two acoustic crystals, which carry three and four braided acoustic edge bands, respectively. The observed braiding structure can correspond to the topological winding in the complex eigenvalue space of projective translation operator, akin to the previously established point-gap winding topology in the bulk of the Hatano-Nelson model. Our work also constitutes the realization of non-Abelian braiding topology on an actual crystal platform, but not based on the "virtual" synthetic dimensions.

Over the past decade, the rapid advancement of deep learning and big data applications has been driven by vast datasets and high-performance computing systems. However, as we approach the physical limits of semiconductor fabrication in the post-Moore's Law era, questions arise about the future of these applications. In parallel, quantum computing has made significant progress with the potential to break limits. Major companies like IBM, Google, and Microsoft provide access to noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) computers. Despite the theoretical promise of Shor's and Grover's algorithms, practical implementation on current quantum devices faces challenges, such as demanding additional resources and a high number of controlled operations. To tackle these challenges and optimize the utilization of limited onboard qubits, we introduce ReSaQuS, a resource-efficient index-value searching system within a quantum-classical hybrid framework. Building on Grover's algorithm, ReSaQuS employs an automatically managed iterative search approach. This method analyzes problem size, filters fewer probable data points, and progressively reduces the dataset with decreasing qubit requirements. Implemented using Qiskit and evaluated through extensive experiments, ReSaQuS has demonstrated a substantial reduction, up to 86.36\% in cumulative qubit consumption and 72.72\% in active periods, reinforcing its potential in optimizing quantum computing application deployment.

Autonomous agents powered by large language models (LLMs) show significant potential for achieving high autonomy in various scenarios such as software development. Recent research has shown that LLM agents can leverage past experiences to reduce errors and enhance efficiency. However, the static experience paradigm, reliant on a fixed collection of past experiences acquired heuristically, lacks iterative refinement and thus hampers agents' adaptability. In this paper, we introduce the Iterative Experience Refinement framework, enabling LLM agents to refine experiences iteratively during task execution. We propose two fundamental patterns: the successive pattern, refining based on nearest experiences within a task batch, and the cumulative pattern, acquiring experiences across all previous task batches. Augmented with our heuristic experience elimination, the method prioritizes high-quality and frequently-used experiences, effectively managing the experience space and enhancing efficiency. Extensive experiments show that while the successive pattern may yield superior results, the cumulative pattern provides more stable performance. We address the multi-node failure repair challenges for MDS array codes. Presently, two primary models are employed for multi-node repairs: the centralized model where all failed nodes are restored in a singular data center, and the cooperative model where failed nodes acquire data from auxiliary nodes and collaborate amongst themselves for the repair process.This paper focuses on the cooperative model, and we provide explicit constructions of optimal MDS array codes with $d$ helper nodes under this model. The sub-packetization level of our new codes is $(d-k+h)(d-k+1)^{\lceil n/2 \rceil}$ where $h$ is the number of failed nodes, $k$ the number of information nodes and $n$ the code length. This improves upon recent constructions given by Liu \emph{et al.} (IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, Vol. 69, 2023).

IoT devices based on microcontroller units (MCU) provide ultra-low power consumption and ubiquitous computation for near-sensor deep learning models (DNN). However, the memory of MCU is usually 2-3 orders of magnitude smaller than mobile devices, which makes it challenging to map DNNs onto MCUs. Previous work separates memory management and kernel implementation for MCU and relies on coarse-grained memory management techniques such as inplace update to reduce memory consumption. In this paper, we propose to coordinate memory management and kernel optimization for DNN inference on MCUs to enable fine-grained memory management. The key idea is to virtualize the limited memory of MCU as a large memory pool. Each kernel divides the memory pool into kernel-specific segments and handles segment load and store while computing DNN layers. Memory consumption can be reduced because using the fine-grained segment-level memory control, we can overlap the memory footprint of different tensors without the need to materialize them at the same time. Following this idea, we implement \ours{} for DNN inference on MCU. Evaluation for single layers on ARM Cortex-M4 and Cortex-M7 processors shows that \ours{} can reduce from $12.0\%$ to $49.5\%$ RAM usage and from $20.6\%$ to $53.0\%$ energy consumption compared to state-of-the-art work. For full DNN evaluation, \ours{} can reduce the memory bottleneck by $61.5\%$, enabling more models to be deployed on low-end MCUs.

Deep-learning-based techniques have been widely adopted for autonomous driving software stacks for mass production in recent years, focusing primarily on perception modules, with some work extending this method to prediction modules. However, the downstream planning and control modules are still designed with hefty handcrafted rules, dominated by optimization-based methods such as quadratic programming or model predictive control. This results in a performance bottleneck for autonomous driving systems in that corner cases simply cannot be solved by enumerating hand-crafted rules. We present a deep-learning-based approach that brings prediction, decision, and planning modules together with the attempt to overcome the rule-based methods' deficiency in real-world applications of autonomous driving, especially for urban scenes. The DNN model we proposed is solely trained with 10 hours of human driver data, and it supports all mass-production ADAS features available on the market to date. This method is deployed onto a Jiyue test car with no modification to its factory-ready sensor set and compute platform. the feasibility, usability, and commercial potential are demonstrated in this article.

As an important and practical way to obtain high dynamic range (HDR) video, HDR video reconstruction from sequences with alternating exposures is still less explored, mainly due to the lack of large-scale real-world datasets. Existing methods are mostly trained on synthetic datasets, which perform poorly in real scenes. In this work, to facilitate the development of real-world HDR video reconstruction, we present Real-HDRV, a large-scale real-world benchmark dataset for HDR video reconstruction, featuring various scenes, diverse motion patterns, and high-quality labels. Specifically, our dataset contains 500 LDRs-HDRs video pairs, comprising about 28,000 LDR frames and 4,000 HDR labels, covering daytime, nighttime, indoor, and outdoor scenes. To our best knowledge, our dataset is the largest real-world HDR video reconstruction dataset. Correspondingly, we propose an end-to-end network for HDR video reconstruction, where a novel two-stage strategy is designed to perform alignment sequentially. Specifically, the first stage performs global alignment with the adaptively estimated global offsets, reducing the difficulty of subsequent alignment. The second stage implicitly performs local alignment in a coarse-to-fine manner at the feature level using the adaptive separable convolution. Extensive experiments demonstrate that: (1) models trained on our dataset can achieve better performance on real scenes than those trained on synthetic datasets; (2) our method outperforms previous state-of-the-art methods. Knowledge graphs (KGs), which store an extensive number of relational facts (head, relation, tail), serve various applications. While many downstream tasks highly rely on the expressive modeling and predictive embedding of KGs, most of the current KG representation learning methods, where each entity is embedded as a vector in the Euclidean space and each relation is embedded as a transformation, follow an entity ranking protocol. On one hand, such an embedding design cannot capture many-to-many relations. On the other hand, in many retrieval cases, the users wish to get an exact set of answers without any ranking, especially when the results are expected to be precise, e.g., which genes cause an illness. Such scenarios are commonly referred to as "set retrieval". This work presents a pioneering study on the KG set retrieval problem. We show that the set retrieval highly depends on expressive modeling of many-to-many relations, and propose a new KG embedding model SpherE to address this problem. SpherE is based on rotational embedding methods, but each entity is embedded as a sphere instead of a vector. While inheriting the high interpretability of rotational-based models, our SpherE can more expressively model one-to-many, many-to-one, and many-to-many relations. Through extensive experiments, we show that our SpherE can well address the set retrieval problem while still having a good predictive ability to infer missing facts. Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities seriously affect various aspects of human life. However, traditional methods for detecting and monitoring IUU fishing activities at sea have limitations. Although synthetic aperture radar (SAR) can complement existing vessel detection systems, extracting useful information from SAR images using traditional methods remains a challenge, especially in IUU fishing. This paper proposes a deep learning based fishing activity detection system, which is implemented on the xView3 dataset using six classical object detection models: SSD, RetinaNet, FSAF, FCOS, Faster R-CNN, and Cascade R-CNN. In addition, this work employs different enhancement techniques to improve the performance of the Faster R-CNN model. The experimental results demonstrate that training the Faster R-CNN model using the Online Hard Example Mining (OHEM) strategy increases the Avg-F1 value from 0.212 to 0.216.

With the escalating frequency of floods posing persistent threats to human life and property, satellite remote sensing has emerged as an indispensable tool for monitoring flood hazards. SpaceNet8 offers a unique opportunity to leverage cutting-edge artificial intelligence technologies to assess these hazards. A significant contribution of this research is its application of Apache Sedona, an advanced platform specifically designed for the efficient and distributed processing of large-scale geospatial data. This platform aims to enhance the efficiency of error analysis, a critical aspect of improving flood damage detection accuracy. Based on Apache Sedona, we introduce a novel approach that addresses the challenges associated with inaccuracies in flood damage detection. This approach involves the retrieval of cases from historical flood events, the adaptation of these cases to current scenarios, and the revision of the model based on clustering algorithms to refine its performance. Through the replication of both the SpaceNet8 baseline and its top-performing models, we embark on a comprehensive error analysis. This analysis reveals several main sources of inaccuracies. To address these issues, we employ data visual interpretation and histogram equalization techniques, resulting in significant improvements in model metrics. After these enhancements, our indicators show a notable improvement, with precision up by 5%, F1 score by 2.6%, and IoU by 4.5%. This work highlights the importance of advanced geospatial data processing tools, such as Apache Sedona. By improving the accuracy and efficiency of flood detection, this research contributes to safeguarding public safety and strengthening infrastructure resilience in flood-prone areas, making it a valuable addition to the field of remote sensing and disaster management.

De-aliasing is an essential procedure for eliminating the aliasing error in nonlinear simulations, such as nonlinear gyrokinetic turbulence simulations. An ideal approach to de-aliasing in the periodic dimension is Fourier truncation. Finite difference low-pass filtering applied in the non-periodic direction strongly dampens aliasing modes. At the same time, it induces numerical dissipation in the region of the physically realistic solution. It is shown analytically that the long-wave dissipation coefficient is proportional to the (Np-3) power of the wavenumber under desirable constraints satisfying the highest order accuracy, where Np is the number of filter points. Numerical results after applying the optimised low-pass filtering to the nonlinear gyrokinetic turbulence simulation suggest that the nine-point format preserves intact mesoscopic zonal structures in Tokamak plasmas, and is therefore suitable for long-time nonlinear turbulence simulations.

We study the problem of fairly allocating $m$ indivisible goods to $n$ agents, where agents may have different preferences over the goods. In the traditional setting, agents' valuations are provided as inputs to the algorithm. In this paper, we study a new comparison-based query model where the algorithm presents two bundles of goods to an agent and the agent responds by telling the algorithm which bundle she prefers. We investigate the query complexity for computing allocations with several fairness notions including proportionality up to one good (PROP1), envy-freeness up to one good (EF1), and maximin share (MMS). Our main result is an algorithm that computes an allocation satisfying both PROP1 and $\frac12$-MMS within $O(\log m)$ queries with a constant number of $n$ agents. For identical and additive valuation, we present an algorithm for computing an EF1 allocation within $O(\log m)$ queries with a constant number of $n$ agents. To complement the positive results, we show that the lower bound of the query complexity for any of the three fairness notions is $\Omega(\log m)$ even with two agents.

We consider the problem of fairly allocating a combination of divisible and indivisible goods. While fairness criteria like envy-freeness (EF) and proportionality (PROP) can always be achieved for divisible goods, only their relaxed versions, such as the ''up to one'' relaxations EF1 and PROP1, can be satisfied when the goods are indivisible. The ''up to one'' relaxations require the fairness conditions to be satisfied provided that one good can be completely eliminated or added in the comparison. In this work, we bridge the gap between the two extremes and propose ''up to a fraction'' relaxations for the allocation of mixed divisible and indivisible goods. The fraction is determined based on the proportion of indivisible goods, which we call the indivisibility ratio. The new concepts also introduce asymmetric conditions that are customized for individuals with varying indivisibility ratios. We provide both upper and lower bounds on the fractions of the modified item in order to satisfy the fairness criterion. Generalizable NeRF aims to synthesize novel views for unseen scenes. Common practices involve constructing variance-based cost volumes for geometry reconstruction and encoding 3D descriptors for decoding novel views. However, existing methods show limited generalization ability in challenging conditions due to inaccurate geometry, sub-optimal descriptors, and decoding strategies. We address these issues point by point. First, we find the variance-based cost volume exhibits failure patterns as the features of pixels corresponding to the same point can be inconsistent across different views due to occlusions or reflections. We introduce an Adaptive Cost Aggregation (ACA) approach to amplify the contribution of consistent pixel pairs and suppress inconsistent ones. Unlike previous methods that solely fuse 2D features into descriptors, our approach introduces a Spatial-View Aggregator (SVA) to incorporate 3D context into descriptors through spatial and inter-view interaction. When decoding the descriptors, we observe the two existing decoding strategies excel in different areas, which are complementary. A Consistency-Aware Fusion (CAF) strategy is proposed to leverage the advantages of both. We incorporate the above ACA, SVA, and CAF into a coarse-to-fine framework, termed Geometry-aware Reconstruction and Fusion-refined Rendering (GeFu). Motion analysis plays a critical role in various applications, from virtual reality and augmented reality to assistive visual navigation. Traditional self-driving technologies, while advanced, typically do not translate directly to pedestrian applications due to their reliance on extensive sensor arrays and non-feasible computational frameworks. This highlights a significant gap in applying these solutions to human users since human navigation introduces unique challenges, including the unpredictable nature of human movement, limited processing capabilities of portable devices, and the need for directional responsiveness due to the limited perception range of humans. In this project, we introduce an image-only method that applies motion analysis using optical flow with ego-motion compensation to predict Motor Focus-where and how humans or machines focus their movement intentions. Meanwhile, this paper addresses the camera shaking issue in handheld and body-mounted devices which can severely degrade performance and accuracy, by applying a Gaussian aggregation to stabilize the predicted motor focus area and enhance the prediction accuracy of movement direction. This also provides a robust, real-time solution that adapts to the user's immediate environment. Furthermore, in the experiments part, we show the qualitative analysis of motor focus estimation between the conventional dense optical flow-based method and the proposed method. In quantitative tests, we show the performance of the proposed method on a collected small dataset that is specialized for motor focus estimation tasks.

The recent success of large language models (LLMs) trained on static, pre-collected, general datasets has sparked numerous research directions and applications. One such direction addresses the non-trivial challenge of integrating pre-trained LLMs into dynamic data distributions, task structures, and user preferences. Pre-trained LLMs, when tailored for specific needs, often experience significant performance degradation in previous knowledge domains -- a phenomenon known as "catastrophic forgetting". While extensively studied in the continual learning (CL) community, it presents new manifestations in the realm of LLMs. In this survey, we provide a comprehensive overview of the current research progress on LLMs within the context of CL. This survey is structured into four main sections: we first describe an overview of continually learning LLMs, consisting of two directions of continuity: vertical continuity (or vertical continual learning), i.e., continual adaptation from general to specific capabilities, and horizontal continuity (or horizontal continual learning), i.e., continual adaptation across time and domains (Section 3). We then summarize three stages of learning LLMs in the context of modern CL: Continual Pre-Training (CPT), Domain-Adaptive Pre-training (DAP), and Continual Fine-Tuning (CFT) (Section 4). Then we provide an overview of evaluation protocols for continual learning with LLMs, along with the current available data sources (Section 5). Finally, we discuss intriguing questions pertaining to continual learning for LLMs (Section 6). This paper reviews the AIS 2024 Video Quality Assessment (VQA) Challenge, focused on User-Generated Content (UGC). The aim of this challenge is to gather deep learning-based methods capable of estimating the perceptual quality of UGC videos. The user-generated videos from the YouTube UGC Dataset include diverse content (sports, games, lyrics, anime, etc.), quality and resolutions. The proposed methods must process 30 FHD frames under 1 second. In the challenge, a total of 102 participants registered, and 15 submitted code and models.
