We present a family of conditional dual auto-encoders (CoDAEs) for generic and model-independent new physics searches at colliders. New physics signals, which arise from new types of particles and interactions, are considered in our study as anomalies causing deviations in data with respect to expected background events. In this work, we perform a normal-only anomaly detection, which employs only background samples, to search for manifestations of a dark version of strong force applying (variational) auto-encoders on raw detector images, which are large and highly sparse, without leveraging any physics-based pre-processing or strong assumption on the signals. The proposed CoDAE has a dual-encoder design, which is general and can learn an auxiliary yet compact latent space through spatial conditioning, showing a neat improvement over competitive physics-based baselines and related approaches, therefore also reducing the gap with fully supervised models. It is the first time an unsupervised model is shown to exhibit excellent discrimination against multiple dark shower models, illustrating the suitability of this method as an accurate, fast, model-independent algorithm to deploy, e.g. in the real-time event triggering systems of large hadron collider experiments such as ATLAS and CMS.

This paper describes the results obtained from an archaeometric study of a bronze Nuragic small boat model (Sardinia, Italy) dating from the Early Iron Age (presumably 9th–7th centuries BC). The artifact comes from an unknown location in Sardinia and is one of the objects that came to the Museum of Turin in the 19th century. This model is of particular interest as it is a unique Nuragic boat model containing a human figure among its decorations. The artifact is kept in the collection of the Royal Museum of Turin (Italy) and is a typical example of Sardinian manufacture from the Early Iron Age. This study was carried out using a combination of non-invasive techniques with energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (ED-XRF) integrated with Monte Carlo (MC) simulations and Raman spectroscopy, which allowed the characterization of the alloy of the artifact.

Objective: Although olfactory dysfunction is one of the most common presenting signs of COVID‐19 infection, little is known about which populations are most susceptible. The aim of this study is to evaluate the risk of COVID‐19‐induced chemosensory dysfunction in malnourished individuals. Methods: The N3C database was queried for adults having positive COVID‐19 test result, diagnosis of chemosensory dysfunction within 2 weeks of positive test date, and overnutrition or undernutrition (i.e., deficiency or excess of micro‐ and macronutrients) related diagnoses prior to COVID‐19 infection. Individuals previously diagnosed with chemosensory dysfunction were excluded. COVID‐19‐positive adults without olfactory dysfunction were similarly analyzed. Statistical analysis was performed using odds ratio calculations (95% confidence interval [CI]). Results: Of 3,971,536 patients with COVID‐19, 73,211 adults were identified with a diagnosis of undernutrition and 428,747 adults were identified with a diagnosis of overnutrition prior to infection. Of those with undernutrition, 264 (0.36%) individuals were identified with a diagnosis of olfactory dysfunction within 2 weeks of infection. Of those with overnutrition, 2851 (0.66%) individuals were identified with a diagnosis of olfactory dysfunction within 2 weeks of infection. The calculated odds ratio for undernutrition and olfactory dysfunction was 0.731 (p < 0.0001, 95% CI [0.0647, 0.0825]). The calculated odds ratio for overnutrition and olfactory dysfunction was 1.419 (p < 0.0001, 95% CI [1.3359, 1.5081]). Conclusion: Overnutrition may increase the risk of COVID‐19‐related olfactory dysfunction, while undernutrition may slightly protect. While reasons are unclear, baseline differences in metabolic, inflammatory, and structural biochemistry deserve closer inspection. We investigate risk factors for severe COVID-19 in persons living with HIV (PWH), including among racialized PWH, using the U.S. population-sampled National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C) data released from January 1, 2020 to October 10, 2022. We defined severe COVID-19 as hospitalized with invasive mechanical ventilation, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, discharge to hospice or death. We used machine learning methods to identify highly ranked, uncorrelated factors predicting severe COVID-19, and used multivariable logistic regression models to assess the associations of these variables with severe COVID-19 in several models, including race-stratified models. There were 3 241 627 individuals with incident COVID-19 cases and 81 549 (2.5%) with severe COVID-19, of which 17 445 incident COVID-19 and 1 020 (5.8%) severe cases were among PWH. The top highly ranked factors of severe COVID-19 were age, congestive heart failure (CHF), dementia, renal disease, sodium concentration, smoking status, and sex. Among PWH, age and sodium concentration were important predictors of COVID-19 severity, and the effect of sodium concentration was more pronounced in Hispanics (aOR 4.11 compared to aOR range: 1.47–1.88 for Black, White, and Other non-Hispanics). Dementia, CHF, and renal disease was associated with higher odds of severe COVID-19 among Black, Hispanic, and Other non-Hispanics PWH, respectively. Our findings suggest that the impact of factors, especially clinical comorbidities, predictive of severe COVID-19 among PWH varies by racialized groups, highlighting a need to account for race and comorbidity burden when assessing the risk of PWH developing severe COVID-19. Solid organ transplant recipients (SOTR) are at increased risk from COVID-19. Over time, the absolute risk of adverse outcomes after COVID-19 has decreased in both the nonimmunosuppressed/immunocompromised (non-ISC) general population, and amongst SOTR. Using the N3C, we examined the absolute risk of mortality, major adverse renal or cardiac events, and hospitalization after COVID-19 diagnosis amongst non-ISC and SOTR populations over five waves of the pandemic (Wave 1: Ancestral COVID; Wave 2: Alpha; Wave 3: Delta; Wave 4: Omicron; Wave 5: Omicron). Within each wave, we determined the relative risk of each outcome for SOTR versus the non-ISC population based on crude event rates, and then used multivariable cox proportional hazards models and logistic regression to determine the adjusted risk of each outcome based on SOT status. Throughout the pandemic, including during the Omicron wave (Wave 5), SOTR were at greater absolute risk for each outcome than non-ISC patients (p-values all <0.001). The adjusted risk of SOT status for each outcome was relatively stable over time (aHR 1.28-1.61 for mortality; aHR 1.31-1.47 for MACE; aHR 1.72-1.90 for MARCE; aHR 1.75-2.07 for AKI; and aOR 1.53-1.81 for hospitalization). Introduction: Despite their adverse environmental effects, modern agriculture relies heavily on agrochemicals to manage diseases and pests and enhance plant growth and productivity. Some of these functions could instead be fulfilled by endophytes from the plant microbiota, which have diverse activities beneficial for plant growth and health. Methods: We therefore used a microbiome-guided top-down approach to select ten bacterial strains from different taxa in the core microbiome of tomato plants in the production chain for evaluation as potential bioinoculants. High-quality genomes for each strain were obtained using Oxford Nanopore long-read and Illumina short-read sequencing, enabling the dissection of their genetic makeup to identify phyto-beneficial traits. Results: Bacterial strains included both taxa commonly used as biofertilizers and biocontrol agents (i.e. Pseudomonas and Bacillus) as well as the less studied genera Leclercia, Chryseobacterium, Glutamicibacter, and Paenarthorbacter. When inoculated in the tomato rhizosphere, these strains promoted plant growth and reduced the severity of Fusarium Crown and Root Rot and Bacterial Spot infections. Genome analysis yielded a comprehensive inventory of genes from each strain related to processes including colonization, biofertilization, phytohormones, and plant signaling. Traits directly relevant to fertilization including phosphate solubilization and acquisition of nitrogen and iron were also identified. Moreover, the strains carried several functional genes putatively involved in abiotic stress alleviation and biotic stress management, traits that indirectly foster plant health and growth. Discussion: This study employs a top-down approach to identify new plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs), offering an alternative to the conventional bottom-up strategy. This method goes beyond the traditional screening of the strains and thus can expand the range of potential bioinoculants available for market application, paving the way to the use of new still underexplored genera. Background Patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) often experience persistent symptoms, known as postacute sequelae of COVID-19 or long COVID, after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. Chronic lung disease (CLD) has been identified in small-scale studies as a potential risk factor for long COVID. Methods This large-scale retrospective cohort study using the National COVID Cohort Collaborative data evaluated the link between CLD and long COVID over 6 months after acute SARS-CoV-2 infection. We included adults (aged ≥18 years) who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 during any of 3 SARS-CoV-2 variant periods and used logistic regression to determine the association, considering a comprehensive list of potential confounding factors, including demographics, comorbidities, socioeconomic conditions, geographical influences, and medication. Results Of 1 206 021 patients, 1.2% were diagnosed with long COVID. A significant association was found between preexisting CLD and long COVID (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 1.36). Preexisting obesity and depression were also associated with increased long COVID risk (aOR, 1.32 for obesity and 1.29 for depression) as well as demographic factors including female sex (aOR, 1.09) and older age (aOR, 1.79 for age group 40–65 [vs 18–39] years and 1.56 for >65 [vs 18–39] years). Conclusions CLD is associated with higher odds of developing long COVID within 6 months after acute SARS-CoV-2 infection. There is a pervasive and comprehensive history of sexism in the pursuit of scientific truth, extending back beyond the days of 'hysteria' and continuing still. Herein, we discuss a disparity in scientific research on a disorder thought to affect less than 8% of the adult population in the USA with the number of women diagnosed with the disorder estimated to be two to three times higher than that of men. While post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is more likely to be experienced by women, we find that the overwhelming majority of published scientific literature on PTSD involves male combat veterans. For example, since March 2019, according to a widely used medical research search engine, specifically the electronic database PubMed (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/), over 1,100 articles can be found with the keywords, 'veteran and PTSD' while using the keywords, 'sexual assault and PTSD' yields a little over 100 total articles. While not all victims of sexual assault are female and not all combat veterans are male, the majority sex in each category is such that much of the research on 'veteran' was specifically carried out with male veterans and much of the work on 'sexual abuse' was carried out exclusively with females. This creates a perception that both overinflates the incidence of PTSD experienced by male combat veterans and underemphasizes the experience of PTSD in female victims of sexual assault. Differences in symptoms of PTSD do vary by war and what little research exists on PTSD after sexual assault suggests that it is likely that symptoms as well as associated comorbidities will vary depending on the cause, type, number, and age at first trauma, among other factors. This study focuses on the specific comorbidities of pain, addiction, and immune function in those who experience PTSD following war-based or sexually-based traumas. It is our hope that in reviewing the currently available research, we spotlight the need for research focused on PTSD experienced after sexual assault. Doing so has the potential to lead to better and more tailored treatments for PTSD, thus enriching outcomes for all sufferers of PTSD. Abstract Background Chronic tinnitus affects millions of people globally and constitutes the most commonly compensated disability among military service members in the United States. Existing treatment options largely surround helping patients cope with their disease as opposed to directly suppressing tinnitus perception. The current study investigated the efficacy of electrical stimulation of the cochlea on chronic disabling tinnitus. Methods In this single-arm, open-label clinical trial, 22 adult subjects with severe-range asymmetric or unilateral non-pulsatile tinnitus underwent electrical stimulation of the cochlea through use of an extra-cochlear electrode positioned on the cochlear promontory. Each subject underwent 3 stimulation treatments over 3 weeks at 7-day intervals. Tinnitus severity was determined by Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), Tinnitus Functional Index (TFI), and Tinnitus Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Inclusion criteria required subjects have no worse than moderate sensorineural hearing loss determined by pre-enrollment audiometric testing. The primary outcome was nadir post-treatment THI scores, obtained at seven timepoints following electrical stimulation, with clinically significant improvement defined as a decrease of ≥ 7. Results All 22 (100%) subjects experienced clinically significant improvement in the THI during the study period with a mean decrease in scores of − 31 (95% CI − 38 to − 25) from a baseline of 48. Twenty (91%) experienced clinically significant improvement detectable on at least two of the three tinnitus survey instruments and 17 (77%) experienced clinically significant improvement detectable on all three survey instruments (i.e., THI, TFI, and VAS). Eight (36%) subjects reported either complete (THI of 0; n = 3) or near-complete (THI 1–4; n = 5) suppression of their tinnitus following a stimulation session. Thirteen (59%) subjects reported a nadir following stimulation at or below the threshold for “no or slight handicap” on the THI (≤ 16). No adverse events were observed. Conclusions These findings establish the foundation for the development of an extra-cochlear implantable device that delivers electrical stimulation to the cochlea for the treatment of disabling tinnitus. Spinal cord injury (SCI) causes permanent paralysis below the damaged area. SCI is linked to neuronal death, demyelination, and limited ability of neuronal fibers to regenerate. Regeneration capacity is limited by the presence of many inhibitory factors in the spinal cord environment. The use of poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLG) bridges has demonstrated the ability to sustain long-term regeneration after SCI in a cervical hemisection mouse model. Critically, imaging of regenerating fibers and the myelination status of these neuronal filaments is a severe limitation to progress in SCI research. We used a transgenic mouse model that selectively expresses fluorescent reporters (eGFP) in the neuronal fibers of the spinal cord. We implanted a PLG bridge at C5 vertebra after hemisection and evaluated in live animals' neuronal fibers at the bridge interface and within the bridge 8 weeks postimplant. These in vivo observations were correlated with in situ evaluation 12 weeks postimplantation. We sectioned the spinal cords and performed fluorescent bioimaging on the sections to observe neuronal fibers going through the bridge. In parallel, to visualize myelination of regenerated axons, we exploited the characteristics of the third-harmonic generation arising from the myelin structure in these fixed sections.

Abstract The current protocols of in vitro fertilization and culture in sheep rely on paradigms established more than 25 years ago, where Metaphase II oocytes are co-incubated with capacitated spermatozoa overnight. While this approach maximizes the number of fertilized oocytes, on the other side it exposes them to high concentration of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by active and degenerating spermatozoa, and positively correlates with polyspermy. Here we set up to precisely define the time frame during which spermatozoa effectively penetrates and fertilizes the oocyte, in order to drastically reduce spermatozoa-oocyte interaction. To do that, in vitro matured sheep oocytes co-incubated with spermatozoa in IVF medium were sampled every 30 min (start of incubation time 0) to verify the presence of a fertilizing spermatozoon. Having defined the fertilization time frame (4 h, data from 105 oocytes), we next compared the standard IVF procedures overnight (about 16 h spermatozoa/oocyte exposure, group o/nIVF) with a short one (4 h, group shIVF).
