102. Peptide binding to cleaved CD31 dampens ischemia/reperfusion-induced intestinal injury

Abstract

Background: CD31 is a key transmembrane neutrophil immunoregulatory receptor. Mesenteric ischemia/reperfusion-induced neutrophil activation leads to a massive cleavage and shedding of the most extracellular domains of CD31 into plasma, enhancing the deleterious effect of neutrophil activation. We have evaluated the preventive therapeutic potential of an engineered synthetic octapeptide (P8RI), which restores the inhibitory intracellular signaling of cleaved CD31, in an experimental model of acute mesenteric ischemia/reperfusion. Methods: In a randomized, controlled, and experimenter-blinded preclinical study, mesenteric ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) was induced in Wistar rats by superior mesenteric artery occlusion for 30 min followed by 4 h of reperfusion. Three groups of rats were compared: I/R + saline perfusion (I/R controls group, n = 7), I/R + preventive P8RI perfusion (P8RI group, n = 7), and sham-operated rats + saline perfusion (sham group, n = 7). Results: Compared with I/R controls, P8RI perfusion significantly decreased intestinal ischemia/reperfusion injury (Chiu’s score, P = 0.01; epithelial area, P = 0.001) and bacterial translocation (plasma Escherichia coli DNA, P = 0.04) and could limit intestinal bleeding (P = 0.09). P8RI decreased neutrophil activation assessed by matrix metalloproteinase-9 release in plasma (P < 0.001) and in the intestinal wall, albeit without statistical significance (P = 0.06 and P = 0.058 for myeloperoxydase). Inhibition of CD31 cleavage from neutrophils could play a major role in the protective effects of P8RI (P < 0.0001). Conclusions: Preventive administration of P8RI, a CD31-agonist peptide, could decrease I/R-induced intestinal injury by potentially limiting neutrophil activation.

Abstract

To develop and integrate solar hybrid system into conventional air conditioning system which provides the same cooling load with considerably less electricity demand. Solar evacuated tube and DC compressor are used for compressing the refrigerant in an air conditioning system, thus effectively reducing the air conditioning electricity consumption by up to 45%. For the flow through type selected geometry of the designed evacuated U-tube collector, a three dimensional simulation and analysis of the thermal performance was done, using the solar ray-tracing model provided by the ANSYS-FLUENT software.

Abstract

Due to the significant variations in electricity generation and its demand, the power plant owners are encountered with challenges of economic operation. Among all, Compressed air energy storage (CAES) technology has proposed itself as a reliable and efficient solution to match the two sides. This paper deals with a modeled compressed air energy storage power plant which has been optimized thermodynamically through an efficient genetic algorithm code. The results of this optimized model, considered as the base case, show that the power plant is technically and financially justifiable. In order to obtain a more tangible realization, it is necessary to verify the results against the variation of key parameters. In this study, the sensitivity analysis is performed based on main parameters including plant loading and ambient condition and the resultant trends of each case are presented. This approach will help the designers to analyze the quality of their designs in different situations.

Abstract

Molecular dynamics simulation is used to study vacancy cluster formation in $��$- and $��$-$Si_3N_4$ with varying vacancy contents (0 - 25.6 at%). Vacancies are randomly created in supercells, which were subsequently heat-treated for 114 nanoseconds. The results show that both $��$ and $��$ can tolerate vacancies up to 12.8 at% and form clusters, confirming previous experimental data indicating 8 at% vacancy in $��$-$Si_3N_4$. However, 25.6 at% vacancy in $��$ results in complete amorphization, while the same amount in $��$ results in a transformation of a semi-amorphous $��$ phase to a defective $��$ phase, leading to the removal of the clusters in newly formed $��$. This clearly explains why cluster vacancies are not experimentally observed in $��$, considering that $��$-$Si_3N_4$ ceramics are produced from $��$. Abstract

Reducing our overwhelming dependence on fossil fuels requires groundbreaking innovations in increasing our efficiency in energy consumption for current technologies and moving towards renewable energy sources. Thermoelectric materials can help in achieving both goals. Moreover, because of recent advances in high-performance computing, researchers more increasingly rely on computational methods in discovering new thermoelectric materials with economically feasible performance. In this article, significant thermoelectric materials discovered through these computational methods are systematically reviewed. Furthermore, the primary computational tools that aid the design of the next-generation thermoelectric materials are introduced and discussed. 127. Unusual ferrimagnetic ground state in rhenium ferrite.

Abstract

Through comprehensive density functional calculations, we predict the stability of a rhenium-based ferrite, ReFe2O4, in a distorted spinel-based structure. In ReFe2O4, all Re and half of the Fe ions occupy the octahedral sites while the remaining Fe ions occupy the tetrahedral sites. All Re ions are predicted to be at a + 4 oxidation state with a low spin configuration (S = 3/2), while all Fe ions are predicted to be at a + 2 oxidation state with a high-spin state configuration (S = 2). Magnetically, ReFe2O4 adopts an unconventional ferrimagnetic state in which the magnetic moment of Re opposes the magnetic moments of both tetrahedral and octahedral Fe ions. The spin–orbit coupling is found to cause a slight spin canting of ~ 1.5°. The predicted magnetic ground state is unlike the magnetic alignment usually observed in ferrites, where the tetrahedral cations oppose the spin of the octahedral cations. Given that the density of states analysis predicts a half-metallic character driven by the presence of Re t2g states at the Fermi level, this compound shows promise towards potential spintronics applications. Abstract

Reducing emissions from the iron and steel industry is essential to achieve the Paris climate goals. A new system to reduce the carbon footprint of steel production is proposed in this article by coupling hydrogen direct reduction of iron ore (H-DRI) and natural gas pyrolysis on liquid metal surface inside a bubble column reactor. If grid electricity from EU is used, the emissions would be 435 kg CO2/tls without considering methane leakage from the extraction, storage and transport of natural gas. Solid carbon, produced as a by-product of natural gas decomposition, finds applications in many industrial sectors, including as a replacement for coal in coke ovens. Specific energy consumption (SEC) of the proposed system is approximately 6.3 MWh per ton of liquid steel(tls). It is higher than other competing technologies, 3.48 MWh/tls for water electrolysis based DRI, and, 4.3-4.5 MWh/tls for natural gas based DRI and blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace (BF-BOF) respectively. Utilization of large quantities of natural gas, where the carbon remains unused, is the major reason for high SEC. Preliminary analysis of the system revealed that it has the potential to compete with existing technologies to produce CO2 free steel, if renewable electricity is used. Further studies on the kinetics of the bubble column reactor, H-DRI shaft furnace, design and sizing of components, along with building of industrial prototypes are required to improve the understanding of the system performance.

147. Impact of climate change implies the northward shift in distribution of the Irano-Turanian subalpine species complex Acanthophyllum squarrosum

Abstract

In this study, we used maximum entropy modeling to predict the climate changeeffects on the distribution range of a subalpine steppe flora species complex, Acanthophyllum squarrosum (Caryophyllaceae). We used data from four different models, with two representative concentration pathways of climate scenarios in modern time, 2030, 2070 and 2080. Our results showed that A. squarrosum has a suitable habitat in ca. 1 million km² (33% of our study area) and will likely experience a northward shift, gaining new habitat in Azerbaijan, Armenia and North of Afghanistan in the near decades. Maxent model predicts A. squarrosum complex populations from southern Iran to be under treat of extinction, especially at lower altitudes regions and this prediction may concern other subalpine species found in the same region. Among the climatic variables investigated, annual mean temperature, and precipitation of warmest and coldest quarter were those that mostly affected A. squarrosum complex distribution.

149. Benchmarking of a micro gas turbine model integrated with post-combustion CO2 capture

Abstract

The deployment of post-combustion CO2 capture on large-scale gas-fired power plants is\ud currently progressing, hence the integration of the power and capture plants requires a\ud good understanding of operational requirements and limitations to support this effort. This\ud article aims to assist research in this area, by studying a micro gas turbine (MGT) integrated\ud with an amine-based post-combustion CO2 capture unit. Both processes were simulated\ud using two different software tools – IPSEpro and Aspen Hysys, and validated against\ud experimental tests. The two MGT models were benchmarked at the nominal condition, and\ud then extended to part-loads (50 and 80 kWe), prior to their integration with the capture\ud plant at flue gas CO2 concentrations between 5 and 10 mol%. Further, the performance of\ud the MGT and capture plant when gas turbine exhaust gases were recirculated was assessed.\ud Exhaust gas recirculation increases the CO2 concentration, and reduces the exhaust gas\ud flowrate and specific reboiler duty. The benchmarking of the two models revealed that the\ud IPSEpro model can be easily adapted to new MGT cycle modifications since turbine\ud temperatures and rotational speeds respond to reaching temperature limits; whilst a\ud detailed rate-based approach for the capture plant in Hysys resulted in closely aligned\ud simulation results with experimental data.\ud
