This paper theorizes the gendered consequences of refugee dispossession for social reproduction, focusing on Ethiopian refugees in Nairobi, Kenya. We analyze the Kenyan refugee regime as structured by colonial legacies of racialization and by neo-colonial global political economy strategies of managing 'surplus' populations. We demonstrate that refugees' ongoing experiences of interpersonal and structural violence constitutes an attack on their capacity for social reproduction and argue the 'feminization of refugee survival' is an important gendered consequence. We identify two transnational displacements that produce a new form of racialized enclosure and the alienation of refugees from the means of social reproduction. The first transnational displacement occurs due to their dispossession from support infrastructure for social reproduction in their origin country, and in the host country. A second, invisible but racialized transnational displacement is the refusal of global North countries to take on the anticipated welfare costs of refugee social reproduction. Transformative and re-generative approaches to refugee social reproduction would need to address both forms of displacement. The paper thus urges IPE scholarship to recognize that the crisis of refugee social reproduction is not only produced by global capitalist regimes, but also deeply structured by gendered, racialized, and colonial hierarchies of inequality. Two mixed peri-substituted phosphine-chlorostibines, Acenap(PiPr2)(SbPhCl) and Acenap(PiPr2)(SbCl2) (Acenap = acenaphthene-5,6-diyl) reacted cleanly with Grignard reagents or nBuLi to give the corresponding tertiary phosphine-stibines Acenap(PiPr2)(SbRR') (R, R' = Me, iPr, nBu, Ph). In addition, the Pt(II) complex of the tertiary phosphine-stibine Acenap(PiPr2)(SbPh2) as well as the Mo(0) complex of Acenap(PiPr2)(SbMePh) were synthesised and characterised. Two of the phosphine-stibines and the two metal complexes were characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The peri-substituted species act as bidentate ligands through both P and Sb atoms, forming rather short Sb-metal bonds. The tertiary phosphine-stibines display through-space J(CP) couplings between the phosphorus atom and carbon atoms bonded directly to the Sb atom of up to 40 Hz. The sequestration of the P and Sb lone pairs results in much smaller corresponding J(CP) being observed in the metal complexes. QTAIM (Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules) and EDA-NOCV (Energy Decomposition Analysis employing Naturalised Orbitals for Chemical Valence) computational techniques were used to provide additional insight into a weak n(P)→σ*(Sb-C) intramolecular bonding interaction (pnictogen bond) in the phosphine-stibines. This paper examines the growth trajectory and the current state of the Indian automobile industry, paying attention to factors that underpinned its transition from import substitution to integration into global production networks. Market-conforming policies implemented by the government of India over the past 2 decades, which marked a clear departure from protectionist policies in the past, have been instrumental in transforming the Indian automobile industry in line with ongoing structural changes in the world automobile industry. India has emerged as a significant producer of compact cars within global automobile production networks. Compact cars exported from India have become competitive in the international market because of the economies of scale of producing for a large domestic market and product adaptation to suit domestic market conditions. Interestingly, there are no significant differences in prices of compact cars sold in domestic and foreign markets. This suggests that the hypothesis of “import protection as export promotion” does not hold for Indian automobile exports.

Rapid urban growth has coincided with a substantial change in the environment, including vegetation, soil, and urban climate. The surface urban heat island (UHI) is the temperature in the lowest layers of the urban atmosphere; it is critical to the surface’s energy balance and makes it possible to determine internal climates that affect the livability of urban residents. Therefore, the surface UHI is recognized as one of the crucial global issues in the 21st century. This phenomenon affects sustainable urban planning, the health of urban residents, and the possibility of living in cities. In the context of sustainable landscapes and urban planning, more weight is given to exploring solutions for mitigating and adapting to the surface UHI effect, currently a hot topic in urban thermal environments. This study evaluated the relationship between land use/land cover (LULC) and land surface temperature (LST) formation in the temperate mountain valley city of Kathmandu, Nepal, because it is one of the megacities of South Asia, and the recent population increase has led to the rapid urbanization in the valley. Using Landsat images for 2000, 2013, and 2020, this study employed several approaches, including machine learning techniques, remote sensing (RS)-based parameter analysis, urban-rural gradient analysis, and spatial composition and pattern analysis to explore the surface UHI effect from the urban expansion and green space in the study area. The results revealed that Kathmandu’s surface UHI effect was remarkable. In 2000, the higher mean LST tended to be in the city’s core area, whereas the mean LST tended to move in the east, south, north, and west directions by 2020, which is compatible with urban expansion. Urban periphery expansion showed a continuous enlargement, and the urban core area showed a predominance of impervious surface (IS) on the basis of urban-rural gradient analysis. The city core had a lower density of green space (GS), while away from the city center, a higher density of GS predominated at the three time points, showing a lower surface UHI effect in the periphery compared to the city core area. This study reveals that landscape composition and pattern are significantly correlated with the mean LST in Kathmandu. Therefore, in discussing these findings in order to mitigate and adapt to prominent surface UHI effects, this study provides valuable information for sustainable urban planning and landscape design in mountain valley cities like Kathmandu.

While adenoviruses cause infections in a wide range of vertebrates, members of the genus Atadenovirus, Siadenovirus, and Aviadenovirus predominantly infect avian hosts. Several recent studies on avian adenoviruses have encouraged us to re-visit previously proposed adenovirus evolutionary concepts. Complete genomes and partial DNA polymerase sequences of avian adenoviruses were extracted from NCBI and analysed using various software. Genomic analyses and constructed phylogenetic trees identified the atadenovirus origin from an Australian native passerine bird in contrast to the previously established reptilian origin. In addition, we demonstrated that the theories on higher AT content in atadenoviruses are no longer accurate and cannot be considered as a species demarcation criterion for the genus Atadenovirus. Phylogenetic reconstruction further emphasised the need to reconsider siadenovirus origin, and we recommend extended studies on avian adenoviruses in wild birds to provide finer evolutionary resolution.

Background: Angioplasty for ISR remains a challenge with relatively high rates of recurrence. Although there is a plethora of data on ISR, there is relatively less data on intra-stent-CTO. In this study, we explore the long-term clinical outcomes following angioplasty to intra-stent CTO and study the differences in clinical outcomes between three treatment-arms: POBA vs. DES vs. DCB. Methods and results: We evaluated all patients who underwent PCI to intra-stent CTO between 2011 and 2017. The endpoints used were: cardiac-death, TVMI, TLR, TVR, and MACE.During the study period, 403-patients with a mean age of 69.2 years had successful PCI to intra-stent CTO. 50% were diabetic, 38% had CKD and 32% had left ventricular dysfunction. 93% of cases were stable angina. 22% (n = 88) received only POBA, 28% (n = 113) received DCB and 50% (n = 202) received DES. During the median follow-up of 48-months, cardiac-death occurred in 5.8% (n = 23), TVMI in 4% (n = 16), TLR in 45.6% (n = 182), TVR in 48.7% (n = 194) and MACE of 46%. There were no differences in the hard endpoints between the 3treatment arms. However, the TLR and overall MACE were better in DCB and DES-groups as compared to POBA (TLR: 33%vs.42%vs.49%; p = 0.06); MACE (34% vs. 45% vs. 52%; p = 0.05). Conclusion: This is the first study that has focussed on the outcomes following angioplasty to intra-stent CTOs with a very long-term follow-up. The hard endpoints were low, although the TLR rates were high. In regards to treatment strategy, the DCB and DES provide relatively better outcomes than POBA.

Limitations of checkpoint inhibitor cancer immunotherapy include induction of autoimmune syndromes and resistance of many cancers. Since CD318, a novel CD6 ligand, is associated with the aggressiveness and metastatic potential of human cancers, we tested the effect of an anti-CD6 monoclonal antibody, UMCD6, on killing of cancer cells by human lymphocytes. UMCD6 augmented killing of breast, lung, and prostate cancer cells through direct effects on both CD8+ T cells and NK cells, increasing cancer cell death and lowering cancer cell survival in vitro more robustly than monoclonal antibody checkpoint inhibitors that interrupt the programmed cell death 1 (PD-1)/PD-1 ligand 1 (PD-L1) axis. UMCD6 also augmented in vivo killing by human peripheral blood lymphocytes of a human breast cancer line xenotransplanted into immunodeficient mice. Mechanistically, UMCD6 upregulated the expression of the activating receptor NKG2D and downregulated expression of the inhibitory receptor NKG2A on both NK cells and CD8+ T cells, with concurrent increases in perforin and granzyme B production. The combined capability of an anti-CD6 monoclonal antibody to control autoimmunity through effects on CD4+ lymphocyte differentiation while enhancing killing of cancer cells through distinct effects on CD8+ and NK cells opens a potential new approach to cancer immunotherapy that would suppress rather than instigate autoimmunity.

Dynamical downscaling of General Circulation Model (GCM) data for any region has been made possible due to a set of physics options and model dynamics within the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. This study evaluated the performance of an ensemble of physics options in simulating rainfall during wet and dry seasons of Lao PDR. The model evaluation criteria focused on identifying the optimum physics options for a range of scenarios. No single combination of physics options performed well in all scenarios reflecting the importance of using different parameterizations according to the geographic location and the intended application of the results. For the dry season, none of the ensemble members performed satisfactorily for the southern region of Lao PDR, while all the ensemble members performed well for the northern and central regions. While almost all the WRF simulations overestimated the rainfall during the wet season, BMJ for cumulus physics performed better in the northern and central regions, and KF performed better in the south region. The YSU scheme performed best as the planetary boundary layer for both wet and dry seasons, while WSM5 for the wet season and Lin for the dry season gave the best model performance as the microphysics option.

Sri Lanka has experienced a variety of natural disasters that have had a disastrous impact on human wellbeing as well as economic welfare of the country. Available data shows that after 1970s, number of both intensive and extensive disasters have been increasing in the country by causing considerable impacts on human life, shelter, livelihood and the economy. The most frequently reported disaster events in Sri Lanka are bushfires, floods, extreme wind events, landslides, lightning and droughts. In general, people take rational decisions of investing in mitigation activities if they understand not only the value of physical impacts of natural disasters, but also their likely social and economic consequences. Given this background this study investigates peoples’ investment on mitigating activities for floods in Rathnapura and Matara districts in Sri Lanka. Floods and landslides are very common in these districts and prolonged duration of floods in many affected areas in the districts results in a high degree of damage to life and household assets in every year. This study uses survey data covering 350 households in those two districts who were victims of the 2017 floods. We estimated the economic cost of the damages which is on average 27 % of their annual income. It is found that economic loss of the poor is relatively higher than high income group suggesting that the poor are more severely impacted than the non-poor households in the study area. Regression results show that household income, education, size of the farm, family size and risk taking behavior serve as the key determinants of the investment on mitigating activities of floods in the study areas.

Introduction and Objectives: Enterococci have traditionally been regarded as low grade pathogens but have emerged as an increasingly important cause of nosocomial infections in the last decade. While the Enterococcus faecalis remains the predominate species in clinical infection, Enterococcus faecium isolates are increasing in proportion. This study was carried out to describe the epidemiology of invasive enterococcal infections among oncology patients at the National Cancer Institute of Sri Lanka (NCISL).Methods: 60 patients with invasive enterococcal infections, who were treated as inward patients at the National Cancer Institute of Sri Lanka from 1.7.2012 to 31.7 21013 whose samples were sent for microbiological investigation were included in this study. Speciation of the isolates was done by using a rapid manual analytic system (RapID STR panel-Oxoid). Vancomycin sensitivity was assessed in all enterococcal isolates by disc diffusion method, agar dilution screening method (CLSI guideline 2013)16 and detection of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) by using Vancomycin gradient strips. Teicoplanin MIC was assessed only in vancomycin resistant isolates using teicoplanin gradient strips. Associated factors for getting an infection with vancomycin resistant strains were assessed using a data extraction sheet.Results: The incidence of invasive enterococcal infections among oncology patients was 1.1 per 1000 admissions. The incidence of invasive enterococcal infection caused by vancomycin resistant species was 0.16 per 1000 admissions. E. faecium was the dominant species causing invasive enterococcal infections (55%). Using the gradient strip method for determination of vancomycin MIC as the gold standard, the screening agar dilution method had 100% sensitivity and specificity and the disc diffusion test had a low specificity (77.8%). Almost all the participants (96.6%) had acquired the enterococcal infection from the hospital. Vancomycin resistant infections were more common in patients who had haematological malignancies, who were treated with 3rd generation cephalosporins and cytotoxic chemotherapy drugs.Conclusions: E. faecium is the dominant species causing invasive enterococcal infections in oncology patients (55%) and phenotypically compatible with the VanA phenotype of glycopeptide resistant enterococci.

A series of phosphorus-arsenic peri-substituted acenaphthene species have been isolated and fully characterised, including single crystal X-ray diffraction. Reactions of EBr3 (E = P, As) with iPr2PAcenapLi (Acenap = acenaphthene-5,6-diyl) afforded the thermally stable peri-substitution supported donor–acceptor complexes, iPr2PAcenapEBr23 and 4. Both complexes show a strong P→E dative interaction, as observed by X-ray crystallography and 31P NMR spectroscopy. DFT calculations indicated the unusual As∙∙∙As contact (3.50 Å) observed in the solid state structure of 4 results from dispersion forces rather than metallic interactions. Incorporation of the excess AsBr3 in the crystal structure of 3 promotes the formation of the ion separated species [iPr2PAcenapAsBr]+Br− 5. A decomposition product 6 containing the rare [As6Br8]2– heterocubane dianion was isolated and characterised crystallographically. The reaction between iPr2PAcenapLi and EtAsI2 afforded tertiary arsine (BrAcenap)2AsEt 7, which was subsequently lithiated and reacted with PhPCl2 and Ph2PCl to afford cyclic PhP(Acenap)2AsEt 8 and acyclic EtAs(AcenapPPh2)2 9.

Drawing on qualitative research, the authors analysed the care support experiences of older Ethiopian refugees resettled in Australia. In-depth interviews conducted with 12 Ethiopians revealed that older Ethiopians experienced language and cultural barriers in accessing formal care services, and that they often did not view these services as entitlements they were due as citizens. Findings demonstrated a significant familial orientation to expectations around, and provision of, care support to older Ethiopians, which may be under-recognised in the Australian social work context. The authors argue that given this familial orientation and the difficulty in accessing formal care services, the reconfiguration of care relationships post-resettlement has resulted in increased reliance on adult daughters' attenuated capacity to meet the care needs of older parents, which raises serious concerns about the long-term viability and gender equity of such arrangements. Older Ethiopian refugees resettled in Australia may experience "care poverty" due to unmet needs for aged care services. Social work practice to redress this should recognise gendered cultural and linguistic barriers to services, and provide effective, culturally competent translation services. The familial orientation of elder care among Ethiopians may potentially over-burden adult daughters who are care-givers; care support policies should, therefore, aim to provide services to prevent gendered care inequalities.
