108. Homogenization of periodic hexa- and tetrachiral cellular solids

Abstract

The homogenization of auxetic cellular solids having periodic hexachiral and tetrachiral microstructure is dealt with two different techniques. The first approach is based on the representation of the cellular solid as a beam-lattice to be homogenized as a micropolar continuum. The second approach is developed to analyse periodic cells conceived as a two-dimensional domain consisting of deformable portions such as the ring, the ligaments and possibly an embedded matrix internally to these. This approach is based on a second displacement gradient computational homogenization proposed by the Authors (Bacigalupo and Gambarotta, 2010). The elastic moduli obtained by the micropolar homogenization are expressed in analytical form from which it appears explicitly their dependence on the parameter of chirality, which is the angle of inclination of the ligaments with respect to the grid of lines connecting the centers of the rings. For hexachiral cells, the solution of Liu et al., 2012, is found, showing the auxetic property of the lattice together with the elastic coupling modulus between the normal and the asymmetric strains; a property that has been confirmed here for the tetrachiral lattice. Unlike the hexagonal lattice, the classical constitutive equations of the tetragonal lattice turns out to be characterized by the coupling between the normal and shear strains through an elastic modulus that is an odd function of the parameter of chirality. Moreover, this lattice is found to exhibit a remarkable variability of the Young's modulus and of the Poisson's ratio with the direction of the applied uniaxial stress. The properties of the equivalent micropolar continuum are qualitatively detected also in the equivalent second-gradient continuum.

109. Second-order homogenization of periodic materials based on asymptotic approximation of the strain energy: formulation and validity limits

Abstract

In this paper a second-order homogenization approach for periodic material is derived from an appropriate representation of the down-scaling that correlates the microdisplacement field to the macro-displacement field and the macro-strain tensors involving unknown perturbation functions. These functions take into account of the effects of the heterogeneities and are obtained by the solution of properly defined recursive cell problems. Moreover, the perturbation functions and therefore the micro-displacement fields result to be sufficiently regular to guarantee the anti-periodicity of the traction on the periodic unit cell. A generalization of the macro-homogeneity condition is obtained through an asymptotic expansion of the mean strain energy at the micro-scale in terms of the microstructural characteristic size e; the obtained overall elastic moduli result to be not affected by the choice of periodic cell. The coupling between the macro- and microstress tensor in the periodic cell is deduced from an application of the generalised macrohomogeneity condition applied to a representative portion of the heterogeneous material (cluster of periodic cell). The correlation between the proposed asymptotic homogenization approach and the computational second-order homogenization methods is obtained through an approximation of the macrodisplacement field based on a second-order Taylor expansion. The form of the overall elastic moduli obtained through the two homogenization approaches, here proposed, is analyzed and the differences are highlighted.

Abstract

Block-lattice materials featuring periodic planar running-bond tessellation of regular rigid blocks and linear elastic homogeneous isotropic interfaces are considered. The governing equations of the discrete masonry-like Lagrangian model are properly manipulated via the novel enhanced continualization scheme, in such a way as to obtain equivalent integral type non-local continua, whose band structure turns out to be coincident with that of the corresponding discrete models. The formal Taylor series expansion of the integral kernels allows deriving homogeneous generalized micropolar higher-order continuum models, characterized by non-local constitutive and inertial terms. The enhanced continualization exhibits thermodynamic consistency in the definition of the overall non-local constitutive tensors, as well as qualitative agreement and quantitative convergent matching of the complex frequency band structure in the regime of both homogeneous and non-homogeneous Bloch waves. The theoretical findings are effectively validated by studying the dispersion relations and the spatial attenuation properties, as referred to realistic representative cases of masonry-like block-lattice micro-structures. Abstract

Depressive disorders are the most common manifestation of psychological distress in allogenic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Few studies have yet investigated the relationship between therapeutic educational interventions and outcomes in these patients with specific attention to those related to mental health. Aim of this study was to understand how much educational intervention can represent a protective factor in preventing psycho-emotional distress-related issues in this setting. A prospective observational study of a multicenter cohort was conducted. Adult patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. A pre-transplant therapeutic educational programme was offered to a cohort of adult patients undergoing allo-HSCT recruited in ten transplant centers of the GITMO network between May 2018 and January 2019. Depression, Anxiety and Stress scale was used to collect data on psycho-emotional distress at admission (T0), at the day of transplant (T1) and at discharge (T2). Descriptive data were collected and reported, and comparative analyses were done among patients who were compliant with the pre-transplant educational intervention and those who did not (for any reason). A cohort of 133 allo-HSCT patients was observed. In patients who did not receive pre-transplant educational intervention, higher levels of depression at admission (p = 0.01) and at the day of transplant (p = 0.03), higher levels of anxiety (p = 0.01 and p = 0.01 respectively) as well as higher levels of stress (p < 0.01 and p = 0.01) were observed. Problem solving and "face to face" interview were the best methods to provide education to patients. Those who received pre-transplant education through "face-to-face" interview reported significant low levels of depression during the whole hospital stay period (p < 0.01; p = 0.01; p = 0.01) and less anxiety and stress at admission (p < 0.05 and p = 0.01 respectively). Depression was more represented in female than male participants at T0 (16.5% vs 9.0%; p = 0.01), while among T0 and T2 the males had a significant higher increasing of depression than females (p = 0.03). Our study demonstrated that pretreatment therapeutic educational programs with specific learning modalities can be effective in limiting the potential risk of developing moderate-to-severe anxiety-depressive states and stress symptoms related to allo-HSCT. Further studies are needed to confirm our results and to understand whether containing psycho-emotional distress can have any relationship with medium- and long-term post-transplant complications.
