How can we be present yet not physically in person? Three bed performances in Argentina suggest such a possibility. In a country marked by the disappearance of 30,000 citizens, artists and activists have sought to make the absent present. These bed performances reveal that by mediating presence and expanding it beyond the here and now, what was thought to have disappeared, remains. This article seeks to find attitudes and judgments elite Romans made based on a person's bed. It culls written sources from a diverse range of genres to argue that elite Roman men saw beds as transformative and reflective items. Through long-lasting and frequent contact, a bed's qualities seeped into bodies and characters. Consequently, as a powerful part of the built environment, beds could strengthen or weaken soldiers as well as help or harm a person's health. Furthermore, beds' transformative power meant elite Romans thought where a man slept revealed who he was: his social status, moral fiber, and civilization. In short, beds marked a person's identity. Examining how Roman elites conceptualized beds informs us on the larger issue of the history of the body, in general, and the sense of touch, in particular. Based on the finite element theory, a joint-plane modeling method is employed to connect the corresponding nodes at the joint surface of the woodworking computer numerical control (CNC) machining center bed with a 2-node 12-degree-of-freedom unit. A spatial element model is established, which can show the state of the nodes between joint surfaces when they are stretched, compressed, or twisted; and it can help build a woodworking CNC machining center on a finite element model of bed with the characteristics of the joint surface. The simulated analysis is performed on the model and is compared with the result of simulated analysis on the bed model that ignores the characteristics of the joint surface and modal experiment. The comparison verifies the effectiveness of the modeling method based on the characteristics of the joint surface. The weak link of the machine bed structure is analyzed and optimized. The natural frequency of the bed is improved by2.55% ~ 11.3%. The displacement is reduced by a maximum of 19.4%, and dynamic performance of the bed is improved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As a service organization, hospitals are categorized into levels in terms of the service provided by health service providers. At the top of these steps are university hospitals as tertiary healthcare service providers. In this respect, although university hospitals have a small volume in the health system in terms of quantity, they have an important share in terms of the content and quality of the health service they provide. From this point of view, the activities of 10 different state university hospitals operating in different cities of Turkey were measured before and after the Covid-19 period with the Pabon Lasso Model using bed occupancy rate, the average length of stay and bed turnover rate indicators. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that there were 4 and 3 hospitals in the 3rd zone, which had the highest efficiency, in 2019 and 2021, respectively, and there were 5 and 2 hospitals in the 1st zone, which had the lowest efficiency, in 2019 and 2021, respectively. The sleep environment is considered one of the most private spaces for humans, primarily linked to a home. As the main actant of the sleep environment, a bed is usually associated with a comfortable private space: the bedroom. However, when the sleep environment is outside and visible to the public gaze, its function evolves into an urban role. This essay focuses on "beds" out of place, offering a differentiated recognition of rough sleepers. A rough sleeper's bed, as a symbolic reference to the materials placed in the public space, becomes an active part of urban life, a node where new interactions occur. Together with images of discarded mattresses left for public disposal and juxtaposed with the data based on sleep studies, this essay invokes the tension between the public and private domains of sleep. The visual images represent the discomfort of a publicly exposed bed, narrating the rough sleepers' experience: sleeping without the benefit of privacy or security. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to compare the firmness of used mattress coil springs from the areas bearing greatest body weight versus areas subjected to little compression. Weight-bearing springs (WBS) extracted from the center of the mattresses (N = 32), and non–weight-bearing springs (NWBS) extracted from the head/foot were of the same mattresses. To determine spring weakness, a 1296-g ingot was placed on the coil, and the compression distance was measured (cm). In addition, a gauge was used to measure the amount of pressure required to compress the coil springs a distance of 2 cm. Comparison between WBS and NWBS data were statistically treated using independent t tests and a 1-way analysis of variance. There were no significant group differences in weight or height in unloaded coils. However, there were significant (P <.05) differences in coil spring compression distance under load (WBS = 2.78 ± 0.34 cm; NWBS = 1.52 ± 0.39 cm) and force gauge compression (WBS = 1090.51 ± 88.42 g; NWBS = 1213.12 ± 71.38 g) between groups. This study found that WBSs were weaker when compressed than the NWBS from used mattresses, and such characteristics may not be visually apparent in a mattress when not in use. Thus, coil springs in bedding systems may eventually fail to provide the initial structural support after use. • TiC improved the absorbance of 8YSZ under the wavelength range of Nd:YAG lasers, allowing to obtain dense parts. • The design of the samples was correlated as the most important factor to the final density of the parts. • A laser processing window was identified and allowed to obtain parts up to 97 % of relative density. • A variation of hatch distance is proposed to check its impact on the final density and microstructure of the parts. This study aimed to process 8 mol.% yttrium stabilized zirconia by powder bed selective laser processing, as well known as selective laser sintering / melting. Titanium carbide was used as absorbance enhancer to a Nd:YAG laser. Titanium carbide was chosen for having the lowest weight / absorbance ratio among four additive options: silicon carbide, carbon black, graphite, and titanium carbide. Several trials were performed using 0,25 wt.% of titanium carbide as absorbance enhancer of 8 mol.% yttrium stabilized zirconia, testing different laser powers, laser speeds, laser strategies, hatch distances and designs. A window of optimized parameters was identified within the study conditions, capable of manufacturing parts with high relative density. Alongside the ongoing debate over whether the primary meaning of the Akkadian term ša rēši (lit. "he of the head") is "eunuch" or "courtier," various explanations for the origin of the term have been proposed. After reviewing the seven explanations encountered in the secondary literature, and assessing their respective strengths and weaknesses, this article makes a new proposal for the origin of the term, namely that it refers to the "head" of the king's bed. It is observed that this hypothesis is consistent: (i) with Akkadian terminology relating to parts of beds, which uses rēšu(m) to designate either a bed's top end generally or its "headboard" specifically; (ii) with the perception, visible in Babylonian ritual texts, of the bed as a place of potential danger to its occupant; and (iii) with the Akkadian literary expression mukīl rēši ("lit. keeper of the head") which, by analogy with well-attested expressions like mukīl bābi ("keeper of the gate") and mukīl appāti (lit. "keeper of the bridle"), is more likely to refer to an inanimate "head" than part of the human body. The possibility that the term ša rēš (šarri) is equivalent to the Greek term εὐνοῦχος, as argued for example by (Briant, P. 1996. Histoire de l'empire Perse. De Cyrus à Alexandre. "bed-keeper"), ša rēši would literally refer to guardianship of the king's bed. This paper reports some recent results related to active monitoring of powder bed fusion (PBF-LB) processes through analysis of layer-by-layer surface profile data. Estimation of fault probability was carried out experimentally in a Renishaw AM250 machine, by collecting Fe3Si powder bed height data, in situ, during the metal additive manufacturing of a heat exchanger section, comprised a series of conformal channels. Specifically, high-resolution powder bed surface height data from a laser profilometer was linked to post-print ground-truth labels (faulty or nominal) for each site from computed tomography (CT) scans, by training a shallow artificial neural net (ANN). The ANN demonstrated interesting capabilities for discovering correlations between surface roughness characteristics and the presence and size of faults. Strong performance was achieved with respect to several standard metrics for classifying faulty and nominal sites. These developments can potentially enable active monitoring processes to become a future component of a layer-by-layer feedback system for better control of PBF-LB processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mattress firmness is a critical factor influencing sleep quality. This study investigates the effects of time, mattress firmness, and anthropometric parameters on surface electromyographic (sEMG) activity during supine rest. Eleven participants were analyzed, and the RMS values for lower back sEMG on three mattresses were measured as 8.37 ± 0.85 μV, 8.43 ± 1.06 μV, and 7.77 ± 1.15 μV during the final five minutes of testing, showing no statistical significance. Similarly, no significant differences in electromyographic activity were observed across different time periods. Anthropometric parameters such as BMI, waist circumference (WC), and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) significantly influenced sEMG activity on firm mattresses. Higher BMI, waist circumference, and waist-to-hip ratio were negatively correlated with RMS and iEMG values on firm mattresses, suggesting that firmer mattresses are better suited for individuals with higher BMI, larger waist circumference, and a more balanced distribution of body weight between the upper and lower body. The medium-firm mattress had the lowest discomfort scores, indicating its broader adaptability. These findings provide a foundation for designing ergonomically optimized, personalized mattresses to improve sleep quality across diverse populations.

Mitochondrial diseases are rare genetic disorders often accompanied by severe sleep disorders. We present the case of a 12-year-old boy diagnosed with a severe primary mitochondrial disease, exhibiting ataxia, spasticity, progressive external ophthalmoplegia, cardiomyopathy and severely disrupted sleep, but no cognitive impairment. Interestingly, his parents reported improved sleep during night train rides. Based on this observation, we installed a rocking bed in the patient's bedroom and performed different interventions, including immersive multimodal vestibular, kinesthetic and auditory stimuli, reminiscent of the sensory experiences encountered during train rides. Over a 5-month period, we conducted four 2-week nocturnal interventions, separated by 1-week washout phases, to determine the subjectively best-perceived stimulation parameters, followed by a final 4-week intervention using the optimal parameters. We assessed sleep duration and quality using the Mini Sleep Questionnaire, monitored pulse rate changes and used videography to document nocturnal interactions between the patient and caregivers. Patient-reported outcome measures, clinical examinations and personal outcomes of specific interests were used to document daytime sleepiness, restlessness, anxiety, fatigue, cognitive performance and physical posture. In the final 4-week intervention, sleep duration increased by 25%, required caregiver interactions reduced by 75%, and caregiving time decreased by 40%. Subjective fatigue, assessed by the Checklist Individual Strength, decreased by 40%, falling below the threshold of severe fatigue. Our study suggests that rocking beds could provide a promising treatment regime for selected patients with persistent severe sleep disorders. Conventional patient monitoring in healthcare has limitations such as delayed identification of deteriorating conditions, disruptions to patient routines, and discomfort due to extensive wiring for bed-bound patients. To address these, we have recently developed an innovative IoT-based healthcare system for real-time wireless patient monitoring. This system includes a flexible epidermal patch that collects vital signs using low power electronics and transmits the data to IoT nodes in hospital beds. The nodes connect to a smart gateway that aggregates the information and interfaces with the hospital information system (HIS), facilitating the exchange of electronic health records (EHR) and enhancing access to patient vital signs for healthcare professionals. Our study validates the proposed smart bed architecture in a clinical setting, assessing its ability to meet healthcare personnel needs, patient comfort, and data transmission reliability. Technical performance assessment involves analyzing key performance indicators for communication across various interfaces, including the wearable device and the smart box, and the link between the gateway and the HIS. Also, a comparative analysis is conducted on data from our architecture and traditional hospital equipment. Usability evaluation involves questionnaires completed by patients and healthcare professionals. Prolonged sleeping postures or unusual postures can lead to the development of various ailments such as subacromial impingement syndrome, sleep paralysis in the elderly, nocturnal gastroesophageal reflux, sore development, etc Fibre Bragg Gratings (a variety of optical sensors) have gained huge popularity due to their small size, higher sensitivity and responsivity, and encapsulation flexibilities. However, in the present study, FBG Arrays (two FBGs with 10 mm space between them) are employed as they are advantageous in terms of data collection, mitigating sensor location effects, and multiplexing features. In this work, Liquid silicone encapsulated FBG arrays are placed in the head (E), shoulder (C, D), and lower half body (A, B) region for analyzing the strain patterns generated by different sleeping postures namely, Supine (P1), Left Fetus (P2), Right Fetus (P3), and Over stomach (P4). These strain patterns were analyzed in two ways, combined (averaging the data from each FBG of the array) and Individual (data from each FBG was analyzed separately). Both analyses suggested that the FBGs in the arrays responded swiftly to the strain changes that occurred due to changes in sleeping postures. 3D histograms were utilized to track the strain changes and analyze different sleeping postures. A discussion regarding closely related postures and long hour monitoring has also been included. Arrays in the lower half (A, B) and shoulder (C, D) regions proved to be pivotal in discriminating body postures. Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a leading cause of high mortality in critically ill patients in intensive care units (ICU). Prone ventilation is one of the important treatment methods for ARDS, but due to the severity of the patients' conditions, their physical weakness, and poor cooperation, it is difficult for them to adjust to the prone position on their own. This requires a large number of medical staff to adjust the patient to a prone position and implement prone ventilation for than 12 hours daily to achieve therapeutic effects. Clinical implementation often faces challenges such as a shortage of staff, patient discomfort, difficulty in changing positions prolonged time leading to bedsores, and lack of auxiliary equipment. It is particularly challenging for ARDS patients, especially those in critical condition, to adjust their on their own. Therefore, healthcare workers from the department of emergency of Yingtan 184 Hospital designed a prone and side lying double-purpose inflatable mattress for ARDS, and obtained the National Utility Model Patent of China (patent number: ZL 2023 2 1249425.7). The prone and side lying dual-purpose inflatable mattress mainly consists of a main mattress, a forehead pad, a prone position pad, and bilateral side lying position pads. The prone position pad and the lateral position pad on both sides are relatively independent, and can be inflated separately through their inflation nozzles to meet the ventilation needs of ARDS patients in prone or lateral positions, making it easy to adjust the patient's position. This mattress is reasonably designed, simple in structure, easy to operate, comfortable, and practical. It has transformation, promotion, and application value.

Sleep is a crucial aspect of geriatric assessment for hospitalized older adults, and implementing AI-driven technology for sleep monitoring can significantly enhance the rehabilitation process. Sleepsense, an AI-driven sleep-tracking device, provides real-time data and insights, enabling healthcare professionals to tailor interventions and improve sleep quality. This study explores the perspectives of an interdisciplinary hospital team on implementing Sleepsense in geriatric hospital care. Using the interpretive description approach, we conducted focus groups with physicians, nurses, care aides, and an activity worker. The Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) informed our thematic analysis to identify barriers and facilitators to implementation. Among 27 healthcare staff, predominantly female (88.89%) and Asian (74.1%) and mostly aged 30-50 years, themes emerged that Sleepsense is perceived as a timesaving and data-driven tool that enhances patient monitoring and assessment. However, barriers such as resistance to change and concerns about trusting the device for patient comfort and safety were noted, while facilitators included training and staff engagement. The CFIR framework proved useful for analyzing implementation barriers and facilitators, suggesting future research should prioritize effective strategies for interdisciplinary team support to enhance innovation adoption and patient outcomes in rehabilitation settings.

A key best practice to prevent and treat pressure injuries (PIs) is to ensure at-risk individuals are repositioned regularly. Our team designed a non-contact position detection system that predicts an individual's position in bed using data from load cells under the bed legs. The system was originally designed to predict the individual's position as left-side lying, right-side lying, or supine. Our previous work suggested that a higher precision for detecting position (classifying more than three positions) may be needed to determine whether key bony prominences on the pelvis at high risk of PIs have been off-loaded. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of categorizing participant position with higher precision using the system prediction F1 score. Data from 18 participants was collected from four load cells placed under the bed legs and a pelvis-mounted inertial measurement unit while the participants assumed 21 positions. The data was used to train classifiers to predict the participants' transverse pelvic angle using three different position bin sizes (45°, ~30°, and 15°). A leave-one-participant-out cross validation approach was used to evaluate classifier performance for each bin size. Results indicated that our prediction F1 score dropped as the position category precision was increased.

Bed-sharing is a controversial but common parenting practice with claimed benefits for emotional and behavioral development. Using data from the UK Millennium Cohort Study ( N  = 16,599), this prospective study investigated whether bed-sharing at 9 months is associated with childhood internalizing and externalizing symptom trajectories. Children were grouped by their patterns of co-developing internalizing and externalizing symptoms from 3 to 11 years of age using a parallel process latent class growth analysis. There were no associations between bed-sharing at 9 months of age and internalizing and externalizing symptom trajectories across childhood. This finding suggests that bed-sharing at 9 months has no positive or negative influence on the development of internalizing and externalizing symptoms across childhood. Clinicians should inform parents that bed-sharing during the second half of the first year is unlikely to have an impact on the later emotional and behavioral development of the children.

A recent trial showed that universal decolonization in adult intensive care units (ICUs) resulted in greater reductions in all bloodstream infections and clinical isolates of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) than either targeted decolonization or screening and isolation. Since regional health-care facilities are highly interconnected through patient-sharing, focusing on individual ICUs may miss the broader impact of decolonization. Using our Regional Healthcare Ecosystem Analyst simulation model of all health-care facilities in Orange County, California, we evaluated the impact of chlorhexidine baths and mupirocin on all ICU admissions when universal decolonization was implemented for 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% of ICU beds countywide (compared with screening and contact precautions). Direct benefits were substantial in ICUs implementing decolonization (a median 60% relative reduction in MRSA prevalence). When 100% of countywide ICU beds were decolonized, there were spillover effects in general wards, long-term acute-care facilities, and nursing homes resulting in median 8.0%, 3.0%, and 1.9% relative MRSA reductions at 1 year, respectively. MRSA prevalence decreased by a relative 3.2% countywide, with similar effects for methicillin-susceptible S. aureus. We showed that a large proportion of decolonization's benefits are missed when accounting only for ICU impact. Approximately 70% of the countywide cases of MRSA carriage averted after 1 year of universal ICU decolonization were outside the ICU.

Italy was hit harshly by the Covid-19 pandemic, registering more than 35,000 Covid-19 deaths between February and July 2020. During this first wave of the epidemic, the virus spread unequally across the country, with northern regions witnessing more cases and deaths. We investigate demographic and socio-economic factors contributing to the diverse regional impact of the virus during the first wave. Using generalized additive mixed models, we find that Covid-19 mortality at regional level is negatively associated with the degree of intergenerational co-residence, number of intensive care unit beds per capita, and delay in the outbreak of the epidemic. Conversely, we do not find strong associations for several variables highlighted in recent literature, such as population density or the share of the population who are older or have at least one chronic disease. This study contributes to studies on domestic material culture and gender. In studying object–person relations, prior scholars have given priority to materialising the ‘object’, paying less attention to the material aspects of the ‘person’. To redress this gap, we draw on recent feminist materialist and affective turns and conceptualise the object–person relation as inherently gendered, embodied and affective. We develop this conceptualisation by analysing the way in which the gendered body interacts with the bed – a domestic material object that is fruitful for a gender analysis. As a result, we offer an extended view of the gendered body that interacts with the material world: one that is biological and cultural, sleeping and waking, and has the capacity to affect and be affected. Aims: To investigate the number of bed transfers (patient transfers within the same ward) and their reasons in acute care wards of mid‐sized hospitals with multibed and private rooms. Background: Bed transfers, even when necessary, are burdensome for patients; however, the reasons for bed transfers in various types of rooms remain unclear. We classified transfer patterns based on the functions of the patients' rooms and the number of beds in each room and analysed scores. Results: Overall, 560 responses were analysed. The average number of bed transfers per day was 2.7. In total, 43% of bed transfers were conducted for patients aged over 70. The most frequent bed transfer pattern was 'transfer between patient rooms with the same number of beds', and the most frequent reason was 'patient did not need that bed'. Conclusions: Unnecessary bed transfers could be reduced by ward designs that reflect nurses' clinical judgement. Implications for nursing management: Monitoring data for the reason regarding bed transfer contributes to hospital planning and decreases unnecessary bed transfers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The bacteria that colonize humans and our built environments have the potential to influence our health. Microbial communities associated with seven families and their homes over 6 weeks were assessed, including three families that moved their home. Microbial communities differed substantially among homes, and the home microbiome was largely sourced from humans. The microbiota in each home were identifiable by family. Network analysis identified humans as the primary bacterial vector, and a Bayesian method significantly matched individuals to their dwellings. Draft genomes of potential human pathogens observed on a kitchen counter could be matched to the hands of occupants. After a house move, the microbial community in the new house rapidly converged on the microbial community of the occupants' former house, suggesting rapid colonization by the family's microbiota.

Background and Objective This study evaluated the effects of a mattress with better body pressure dispersal in comparison to a control mattress on sleep quality. Methods In this randomized crossover study, 10 healthy young men slept in an experimental sleep room on either a functional mattress made from polyurethane, with a special four-layer three-dimensional structure, or a control mattress made from solid polyester wadding, which is a mattress commercially available in Japan. Polysomnography recordings were used to characterize sleep architecture, and the length of slow wave sleep (SWS) episodes and delta power density were calculated from the electroencephalography data and subjective sleep quality was evaluated by questionnaire they answered after waking. Results There were no significant differences in sleep latency, the total duration of each sleep stages, total sleep time, or sleep efficiency. Although the difference was subtle, delta power density significantly increased with the functional mattress. There was no difference in the total duration of SWS, but there were significantly fewer SWS episodes with the functional mattress (10.3 ± 1.8) than with the control mattress (16.9 ± 1.2) and longer SWS episode duration (10.9 ± 1.7 min) with the functional mattress than with the control mattress (5.6 ± 0.5 min). Conclusions It was suggested that the functional mattress lengthened SWS episode duration, and its fragmentation was effective in evaluating the sleep quality of healthy young individuals.

Abstract Background Korea has seen a rapid increase in the use of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with the ratio of PCI to coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) the highest in the world. This study was performed to examine the factors associated with the rates of CABG and PCI. Methods The data were acquired from the National Health Insurance database in Korea in 2013. We calculated the age-sex standardized rates of CABG and PCI. We examined the factors associated with the CABG and PCI rates by performing a regression analysis. Results The rate of CABG showed a negative association with the deprivation index score, and other factors, such as the number of providers or hospital beds, did not show any significant association with the CABG rate. The rate of PCI had a strong negative association with the number of cardiothoracic surgeons and a strong positive association with the number of hospital beds. Conclusions The positive association between the PCI rate and the number of hospital beds suggests that the use of PCI may be driven by the supply of beds, and the inverse association between the PCI rate and the number of cardiothoracic surgeons indicates the overuse of PCI due to lack of the providers of CABG. Policy measures should be taken to optimize the use of revascularization procedures, the choice of which should primarily be based on the patient’s need.
